  • Monday's Tip Sheet
    David Schwab

As the college basketball regular season continues to grind to a close in anticipation of this year’s conference tournaments, there are a trio of games on Monday night in both the ACC and the Big 12 that could have a big impact on the final standings.

Getting things started as part of ESPN’s Big Monday, the No. 2 Virginia Cavaliers will be on the road against Syracuse. Later that night in Lubbock, No. 11 Texas Tech will play host to the Texas Longhorns in the first Big 12 clash. As a bonus betting game in that same conference, No. 16 Kanas State will be on the road against TCU.

No. 2 Virginia Cavaliers at Syracuse Orange (ESPN , 7:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Virginia -7, Total 121

    Betting Matchup

The Cavaliers head into the final week of the regular season tied with North Carolina for the lead in the ACC at a straight-up 14-2. They started their current six-game winning streak with a eight-point win against the Tar Heels on Feb. 11 as one-point road underdogs. Virginia (26-2 SU, 21-7 ATS) is 5-1 against the spread during this same span with the total staying UNDER in four of the six games. By holding Pittsburgh to just 49 points in Saturday’s 24-point win at home, the Cavaliers’ points-allowed average stands at 54.1.

With Saturday’s 79-54 romp over Wake Forest as a 7 ½-point road favorite, Syracuse moved to 10-6 SU in ACC play as part of a 19-10 record overall. The Orange have covered the closing spread in four of their last six games with the total staying UNDER in five of those contests. They have a 4-2 record ATS in their last six home games. Junior guard Tyrus Battle scored 21 points against Pitt on Saturday and the defense did the rest to secure the win. He leads the team in scoring with 17.7 points per game.
    Betting Trends

-- The Cavaliers have gone 18-7-1 in their last 26 games played on Monday. The total has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in four of their last five games against a team with a SU winning record.

-- The Orange are 1-4 ATS in their last five games following a SU win with the total staying UNDER in four of their last five home games.

-- The underdog has covered the closing spread in four of the last five meetings with the total staying UNDER or ending as a PUSH in the last four meetings in Syracuse.

Texas Longhorns at No. 11 Texas Tech Red Raiders (ESPN, 9:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Texas Tech -8, Total 131 ½

    Betting Matchup

Texas moved to 5-4 SU in its last nine games with Saturday’s 86-69 upset against Iowa State as a slight one-point home underdog. The Longhorns have gone 8-1 ATS during this same span with the total going OVER in five of their last seven games. They are an even 8-8 SU in Big 12 play as part of an overall record of 16-13. Texas is 6-3 ATS this season on the road. Back on Jan. 12, it lost to Texas Tech at home 68-62 as a 1 ½-point favorite. Jase Febres put up a career-high 26 points in Saturday’s win with the Longhorns’ leading scorer Kerwin Roach II out of the lineup due to an ongoing suspension.

The Red Raiders are tied with Kansas State for the lead in the Big 12 at 12-4. They have won their last seven games SU while going 6-1 ATS with Saturday’s 81-66 victory against TCU as four-point road favorites. The total has gone OVER in Texas Tech’s las four outings. It is 24-5 SU (13-15-1 ATS) overall with a SU six-game winning streak on its home court. Sophomore guard Jarrett Culver is averaging a team-high 17.9 PPG and he has exceeded that average in four of his last five games.

    Betting Trends

-- The Longhorns are a perfect 4-0 ATS in their last four road games and the total has gone OVER in their last four games coming off an ATS win.

-- The Red Raiders have a 4-1 record ATS in their last five home games with the total going OVER in four of those games.

-- The road team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings and the total has gone OVER in the last three games between the two.

No. 16 Kansas State Wildcats at TCU Horned Frogs (ESPN2, 9:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Kansas State -1, Total 131 ½

    Betting Matchup

Kansas State (22-7 SU, 16-13 ATS) remains in contention for the Big 12 regular season title with Saturday’s 66-60 victory at home against Baylor. The Wildcats failed to cover as 6 ½-point home favorites to slip to 2-3 ATS over their last five games. The total stayed UNDER 127 points in that win and it has stayed UNDER in three of their last four contests. Dean Wade had the hot hand against Baylor with 20 points with senior guard Barry Brown Jr. adding 10 points to the winning cause. Brown leads the Wildcats in scoring with 15.1 PPG, but he has only scored a combined 24 points in his last three starts.

The Horned Frogs only have one win (SU and ATS) in their last six games after coming up well short in Saturday’s loss to Texas Tech. They are 6-10 SU in conference play with a 5-11 record ATS. The total has gone OVER in seven of TCU’s last 10 games overall and it is 1-4 ATS in its last five games at home. Coming into this game, it is 18-11 SU overall with a 14-15 record ATS. The Horned Frogs are averaging 75.5 PPG, but they are giving up an average of 70.9 points on defense. Last week, they gave up 104 points in an overtime loss to West Virginia.

    Betting Trends

-- The Wildcats have covered in eight of their last 11 games following a SU win. The total has stayed UNDER in four of their last five Monday games.

-- The Horned Frogs are 1-5 ATS in their last six games coming off a SU loss and the total has gone OVER in seven of their last 10 games played on Monday.

-- Kansas State won the first meeting this season 65-55 as a four-point home favorite to improve to 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings. The total has stayed UNDER in the last four matchups.

    • Top 25 Betting Recap
      Joe Williams

We're winding down the regular season, and the pressure isn't too much for some teams, while a few other Top 25 teams have been wilting in a big way. One of those previously highly-ranked teams that are in freefall is Nevada (26-3 SU, 16-11-1 ATS) was humming right along until Feb. 20 at San Diego State (19-10 SU, 16-12 ATS). They lost that game by eight, and lost again this past week against Utah State (24-6 SU, 16-13 ATS) in Logan over the weekend. The Wolf Pack are suddenly looking mortal away from home, and they have failed to cover each of the past four. A lack of defense is particularly concerning, as they have yielded 77.0 points per game (PPG) over the past two, more than 10 points over their season average (66.7 PPG). They have a rematch with the Aztecs coming up this week, and probably could use a big win before heading into the postseason.

Maryland (21-9 SU, 15-14-1 ATS) has dropped two in a row, and three of the past five. A pair of losses to Michigan (26-4 SU, 17-13 ATS) is no embarrassment, but a 17-point loss at Penn State (12-17 SU, 13-14-2 ATS) certainly isn't going to wow the NCAA Tournament committee when it's time to dole out seedings. The Terps are just 5-6 SU in their past 11 games overall, and 2-5 SU/ATS in the past seven games either on the road or on a neutral-site court. Also in the Big Ten, Wisconsin (20-9 SU, 14-14-1 ATS) has been a .500 team over the past six outings, and they're 0-5-1 ATS during the span. They'll meet the equally disappointing Hawkeyes of Iowa (21-8 SU, 12-17 ATS), who have suddenly forgotten how to cover a spread. The Hawkeyes are 1-3 SU over the past four outings, and they have failed to cover six straight and eight of the past 10 contests.

Marquette (23-6 SU, 18-11 ATS) is feeling the pressure of March, falling to a mediocre Creighton (16-13 SU, 14-14 ATS) side for their second consecutive loss and non-cover. The Golden Eagles are crumbling, going just 4-3 SU and 3-4 ATS across the past seven outings, too. The only thing that has been consistent for Marquette has been the 'under', hitting in six of the past eight contests.

Cincinnati (25-4 SU, 12-17 ATS) has won five in a row since a 65-58 loss at Houston (27-2 SU, 19-9-1 ATS) on Feb. 10. The Bearcats failed to cover in that game, however, and that touched off an 0-6 ATS skid heading into the new week. The 'under' has connected in four in a row for Cincy, however, and the under is 6-1 across the past seven. Houston lost to UCF (25-4 SU, 12-17 ATS), as the Golden Knights have squeezed into the picture for a potential at-large NCAA Tournament bid. The Cougars had no answers for 7-foot-6 Tacko Fall, and the Knights will now set their sights on Cincinnati this week.

One team not struggling straight-up or against the number is Wofford (26-4 SU, 16-11 ATS) of the SoCon, as they have wrapped up the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, and could have done enough in the regular season to nail down an at-large bid even if they stumble next week and fail to lock down an automatic bid. The Terriers went 18-0 on conference play, and they have covered eight of their past nine outings. The only losses for the Terriers came against North Carolina (24-5 SU, 17-10-2 ATS) in the season opener Nov. 6, at Oklahoma (18-11 SU, 18-8-3 ATS) on Nov. 18, at Kansas (22-7 SU, 13-16 ATS) on Dec. 4 and at Mississippi State (21-8 SU, 15-14 ATS) on Dec. 19. That loss to the Bulldogs was their last setback. They also have resume-building wins at South Carolina (14-15 SU, 12-16 ATS), as well as a pair of wins by an average of 29.5 points vs. UNC Greensboro (26-5 SU, 13-15-1 ATS), a team ranked 33rd in RPI, as well as a sweep against Wofford (24-6 SU, 11-16 ATS), a SoCon team which previously appeared in the Top 25.

      • Tournament Time
        Jim Feist

My head is spinning, and I’m loving it!

It’s time for six weeks of madness….

Many times, over the last four or five decades this has been a very profitable time.

Let’s break it down. There are four post season tournaments. The CBI, CIT, NIT and of course the granddaddy of them all the NCAA Men's Tournament.

Before we get to all of that, the madness begins with the Conference Tournaments. This is where teams that play the teams involved have played each other, for the most part for the last six to eight weeks. By having that mix, we get to analyze different aspects to handicapping than we will in the season ending tournaments mentioned above.

Those aspects of handicapping are mostly focused on history and familiarity. When teams play each over often, players get to know each other and get to learn each other’s strengths and weaknesses. In turn, us handicappers get to use that information in our analysis.

The first element of handicapping I use is to make my own line, and believe me that is much easier to do, when teams that play each other have been playing in very similar power rating ranges, which is what happens when they have been playing similar opponents in their own conference.

Revenge is a tool that is used often by cappers. It can be a very effective tool but can be overused. Some cappers have used it effectively, but they are the cappers that use it selectively. Just because team A beat team B by 20 pts does not mean team B will be able to turn the tables in the next meeting. Sometimes one team is just too good for the other and unless the superior team doesn’t show up, the weaker team will not be able to turn the tables.

Style matters. Pace matters. There are so many things to be aware but too much info can lead to paralysis by analysis. Therefore putting together a strong database throughout the season gives you a solid foundation.

Here it is late February/early March and the madness, so to speak has already begun. In the last few weeks, we have seen the potential No. 1 NBA draft choice, Zion Williamson of Duke go down with injury. We have also seen an increasing number on underdogs not only cover but also win outright, over high-ranking opponents. Yes, the Madness has already begun and I Love It.

What has already begun as well is the annual debate over, who’s in and who’s out. Unfortunately, the committee will never get this right, wherein they will satisfy everyone. No one can ever satisfy everyone.

Let’s begin with a look at the Conference Tournaments and move on from there.

        ACC:
This is one of the very top conferences. Clearly Duke is the team to beat. If they are absent Zion, they still have enough weapons to be very dangerous. North Carolina and Virginia also stand out, but this is a very strong conference, so there are a few others that could catch fire. I believe the strongest outsider team is Florida State. My Conference Pick is Duke if Zion plays and North Carolina if he does not.

        American Athletic:
Don’t sleep on these teams. Both Houston, who is having a remarkable season, and Cincinnati are very capable to move on and do some damage if they get in the Big Dance. Central Florida with their 7’6” center is also very capable. I don’t see all three in the Big Dance, but it could happen. My Conference Pick is Houston

        Atlantic 10:
No one in this league looks to be able to go to the next level but one may. The winner of their tournament has a shot to get in. Davidson, Dayton or Virginia Commonwealth are the top dogs to consider. My Conference Pick is Virginia Commonwealth.

        Big 12:
This Conference is very tight. When a conference is this tight top to bottom, upsets are very likely to happen. Kansas State and Texas Tech look the best to me with just about everyone else having a shot, except for West Virginia and Oklahoma State. Multiple teams will make the Big Dance. My Conference Pick is Texas Tech

        Big East:
The best team in this Conference right now is Marquette. Defending National Champion Villanova is still a force but while Marquette is getting better Villanova is declining. This is a very balanced league with several dangerous clubs, with St John’s having shown signs they can beat anyone on a given day. My Conference Pick is Marquette

        Big Ten:
Top teams are Michigan State, Michigan and Purdue. A few others, Maryland and Wisconsin, follow closely and can upset the top group on any given day. My Conference Pick Michigan State.

        Big West:
I’m sure this conference tournament will be very competitive. The talent level is very thin, but Cal-Irvine and Cal State Fullerton should come out on top. My Conference Pick is Cal-Irvine.

        Colonial:
Like all the Conference Tourneys, the players want to win, and this will be no exception. Hofstra has played well all season as has College of Charleston and Northeastern. My Conference Pick is Hofstra.

        Conference USA:
Another small conference that will bring lots of excitement. This should be exciting but tough to handicap before it starts. This is where watching as many games as possible during tournament play will bring dividends. You could throw a blanket over about five teams to win this one. My conference Pick Old Dominion.

        Horizon:
Northern Kentucky and Wright State have the advantage here, but upsets can happen here with teams like Oakland and Illinois Chicago lurking. My conference Pick Wright State.

        MAC:
Buffalo is the clear choice here but could falter if they don’t come prepared. There are several speed bumps that could cause trouble from the other 11 teams in this group. Look out for Toledo and Bowling Green. My conference Pick Buffalo.

        Missouri Valley:
Remember last year’s Tournament darling? That was Loyola Chicago and the magic that Sister Jean brought to the event. That was exciting and really brought a lot of fans back for more. This year Loyola will need a little more help as they are not quite the same group. There are a few teams that could derail Loyola, especially Drake, who has been a bettor’s gold mine this year. Northern Iowa and Southern Illinois are close as well. Should be a battle for the title. My Conference Pick Northern Iowa.

        Mountain West:
As with all of these conferences, there are multiple land mines for the leaders to get past. Nevada is the clear choice here, but San Diego State, Fresno State and Utah State all have the talent to upset the Wolfpack. Nevada has the better talent by far. My conference pick is Nevada.

        PAC-12:
What a disappointment this conference has been this year. Usually we get better quality out of the PAC-12. Washington stands out but a few others can surprise. There should only be one team going to the Big Dance from here. Arizona State, Colorado and Oregon are worth mentioning but my conference pick is Washington.

        SEC:
Like the ACC and Big 10, this league is loaded. Kentucky, LSU and Florida stand out to me. Others could easily be in the mix. Tennessee was for a time ranked #1 but their weak non-conference slate did not toughen them up enough. It will be a tough battle for the title and several teams will make the Big Dance, but my conference pick is Kentucky.

        Sun Belt:
Texas State is a hard team to prepare for, but these teams do know each other well. Georgia State also plays a tough brand of ball and Georgia Southern is very good. Not many hoop fans know about these clubs but beware, if they get to the Big Show, they can knock someone off. My conference pick is Texas State.

        West Coast:
It’s all Gonzaga as it usually is for this conference. The lack of big game experience could derail the Zags as it has in the past. Be that as it may, the Zags are one of the very best teams in the nation. My conference pick is Gonzaga.

The following Conferences I will just mention who I pick.

        Big Sky:
        Montana

        MAAC:
        Quinnipiac

        Ohio Valley:
        Belmont

        Southern:
        NC Greensboro

        Summit:
        South Dakota State

                • Tuesday’s 6-pack

                  — Virginia 79, Syracuse 53— Cavaliers went into a dome, made 18-25 on the arc. Wow.

                  — NJIT 83, Florida Gulf Coast 78— Minor upset in Atlantic Sun tourney.

                  — Heat 114, Hawks 113— Dwyane Wade scored 23 points off the bench.

                  — Spurs 104, Nuggets 103— San Antonio leads #9 seed Sacramento by three games.

                  — Grad transfer QB Nick Starkel jumps from Texas A&M to Arkansas.

                  — Looks like Rams, Cowboys are playing a preseason game in Hawai’i this summer.

                  Quote of the Day
“To a degree, he’s hurt the game. And what I mean by that is I go into these high school gyms, I watch these kids and the first thing they do is run to the three-point line. You are not Steph Curry.”
ESPN’s Mark Jackson, back in 2015.

                  Tuesday’s quiz
Where did Tony Bennett coach before moving to Virginia?

                  Monday’s quiz
There no World Series because the baseball players were on strike in 1994.

                  Sunday’s quiz
Patrick Ewing played with the Knicks for 15 years; he finished his career with the Orlando Magic.

                  ************************************************** ***************

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

                  13) Stephen Zimmerman is 6-foot-11 and 22 years old; he plays an average of 19.8 mpg for the Knicks’ G-League team and scores 8.2 ppg. He’s played in 85 G-League games over three years.

Here’s the thing; Mr Zimmerman was the 41st player taken in the 2016 NBA Draft; if he had stayed in college, he would be a senior at UNLV right now. Would he be better off had he stayed in school? I don’t know the answer to this question, but he is playing only 19.8 mpg now, it doesn’t seem like he is that close to getting a call back to the NBA.

You stay in college, you work harder on your game in practices, plus you can get a college degree that could prove useful if the basketball thing doesn’t work out.

                  12) I look at his free throw percentage and it has been right around 62% for all three of his years in the G-League, so in three years as a pro, he hasn’t improved that part of his game. He is grabbing 8.9 rebounds a game, so that number has improved, but he’s also played for three teams in three years. If the lowly Knicks don’t bring him up, then what?

Kids have to decide between staying in college and practicing more, as opposed to going pro, getting paid and playing more games while practicing less, but it is a cruel world out there, and if you’re not ready, teams move on pretty quickly. Hopefully Zimmerman will keep improving and find his way back to the NBA.

                  11) Was pretty sad listening to a 2:16 clip of NBA commish Adam Silver talking about so many NBA players being genuinely unhappy, because they’re isolated in the world.

Sounds like your basic first-world problem, but if you’re in your 20’s and banking a 7 or 8-figure income and you ain’t happy, I’m not sure how you fix that. I’m approaching 60 years old and am a retired government employee, but I’m pretty damn happy despite not being rich.

Maybe part of the solution for future kids is that staying in college longer would give you friendships that could propel you into adulthood with a support system, I’m not really sure, but I am pretty adamant that more kids would be better off staying in school longer, to grow up more.

                  10) Paul Goldschmidt doesn’t look right wearing a Cardinals’ uniform.

                  9) Sounds like Nick Foles is headed to the Jacksonville Jaguars next season.

                  8) ESPN found an excellent new basketball analyst when it hired former NBA player Caron Butler, who is at ease behind the mike- he is fun to listen to.

                  7) ESPN.com ran an article that is highly critical of Phoenix Suns’ owner Robert Sarver. Since the departure of coach Mike D’Antoni from the Suns in 2008, Phoenix has had four general managers and seven head coaches, not exactly a blueprint for success.

                  6) An 85-year old guy in Texas ran a mile this weekend in 7 minutes, 47 seconds. At age 85.

Seriously, if I drive 10 miles in my car, I’m looking for the drive-thru window at a Wendy’s. Running is no longer an option, not that it ever was. Kudos to this gentleman, who ran college track for Texas before I was born, back in the 50’s.

                  5) In the AAF over the weekend, on its first drive of the game, San Antonio ran 21 plays for 78 yards on a drive that took 9:34, but they kicked a FG, didn’t score a TD. Not sure I’ve ever seen that before, a 21-play drive, and for it not to end in a TD or a turnover, thats weird, especially since it was a 38-yard FG, they weren’t even that close to the goal line.

                  4) Announced attendance at the four AAF games this past weekend:
                  — San Diego @ Memphis: 13,621
                  — Orlando @ Salt Lake City: 9,302 (was snowing there)
                  — San Antonio @ Birmingham: 6,539
                  — Atlanta @ Arizona: 8,865

No idea what their attendance goals are, or if these numbers are good or bad, but they get 90,000 in Tuscaloosa for Alabama’s spring game. 6,539 in Birmingham can’t be good.

                  3) Generally speaking, an agent’s take is 3% of the athlete’s salary, so Scott Boras’ take from the Bryce Harper bonanza figures to be $9.9M.

                  2) Phillies, by the way, sold 200,000 game tickets the day they announced the Harper signing.

                  1) The ruckus after the Nevada-Utah State game Saturday apparently was related to students storming the court after the game ended. Court storming needs to be stopped, before something really bad happens, with a player slugging someone or a huge brawl breaking out.

                            Big Spread, Strong Trend

The Blue Devils have been nearly automatic when facing a gigantic point spread – but not in the way you might think. Duke hosts Wake Forest in its final regular-season home game of the year, and will hope to put on a rousing show for the local fans before traveling to North Carolina to face the Tar Heels on Saturday. While the Blue Devils (-26.5) have gone a decent 9-6 ATS in their past 15 games as favorites of 25 points or more, there's an even stronger trend at work in those games, with Duke finishing below the total seven straight times and 12 of the past 14 when giving away at least 25 points.

                            Take the Tigers/Total Tandem

Teams that fare well on the road are the ones to truly be reckoned with at this time of the year – and road warriors don't come much more fierce than the LSU Tigers, who travel to Florida for a Wednesday night encounter with the Gators. Not only are the Tigers a sizzling 8-1 SU on the road this season, they're 7-2 ATS – and that's not the only trend bettors should consider in this one. LSU is 7-2 ATS and 6-3 O/U in its previous nine games overall, with the win/Over combo connecting four times in that span. Bettors should take a long look at the win/Over vs. a Gators side that is just 9-5 SU and 3-11 ATS at home.

                            Golden Opportunity

Marquette would love nothing more than to strengthen their record heading into the postseason – and they're in good position to do that as the Golden Eagles take on the host Seton Hall Pirates on Wednesday night. The Golden Eagles have been a tough opponent away from Fiserv Forum, having gone 6-1 ATS in their previous seven road games; that's part of a longer stretch of cover success that has seen them go 14-6 ATS in their past 20. And this series has seen the road team dominate against the spread, boasting a 19-5-1 ATS mark over the previous 25 encounters.

                            Their Name is Rio (Grande)

There are plenty of big-name schools among the top cover options in the country – Virginia, Michigan State and Oklahoma among them. But a handful of smaller programs have also made their mark as terrific ATS plays – and few stand out more than Texas Rio Grande Valley, who enter Thursday's home date with California Baptist with a scintillating 21-8-1 ATS mark that ranks third best in all of Division I. The Vaqueros have been particularly strong of late, going 9-2 ATS in their previous 11 lined games; they covered by a half-point in an 81-74 victory the last time they met California Baptist back on Jan. 5.

                            Mid-Major to Watch: Belmont Bruins (25-4 ATS, 18-9-1 ATS, 16-12 O/U)

Few teams have been as pleasant a surprise as the Bruins, who open the Ohio Valley Conference tournament Wednesday as the top-seeded team. The Bruins take on Southeast Missouri State in the opening round, and aren't expected to have much trouble after beating the Redhawks by a combined 44 points in their two regular-season meetings while covering in both. And given how potent the Belmont offense is, it's safe to say they have much bigger aspirations.

Few teams can hope to keep up with Belmont, which averages 88.3 points per game – behind only Gonzaga among Division I programs. And a trio of stars are responsible for the bulk of the scoring, with Dylan Windler (21.1 ppg), Kevin McClain (16.2) and Nick Muszynski (15.0) leading the way. It doesn't hurt, either, that five of the Bruins' top six options in terms of minutes played are shooting better than 37 percent from 3-point range, with three also shooting above 50 percent from the field.

                            Betting Trends

Late-season dedication to defense has resulted in even more Under conversions, with more than 53 percent of all games falling below the total over the previous seven days. That falls right in line with totals trends over the previous 30 days (52.5 percent), while the season trend sees the Under finishing with a dominant 52.0-percent edge.

Oddsmakers will be cracking open the bubbly before long, having kept bettors from gaining any discernible season-long edge when it comes to spreads. Favorites are at 50.03 percent for the season, while road teams have an ever-so-slight 50.17-percent advantage ATS. And road faves and home underdogs are split right down the middle (649-649-24).

Congratulations are in order for the Loyola-Maryland Greyhounds, who enter Tuesday with a Division I-high 21 Over conversions – an incredible feat considering the league has trended toward the Under. The Greyhounds are one of only three teams with 20 or more Overs to date, a list that includes VMI (20-7 O/U) and Purdue Fort Wayne (20-8 O/U).

                            • Kentucky at Ole Miss
                              Brian Edwards

Kentucky (24-5 straight up, 16-13 against the spread) will be in bounce-back mode tonight when it invades Oxford to take on an Ole Miss team that can bolster in its resume with a notable win over the Wildcats, who were listed as 5.5-point road favorites early this morning. The total for ‘over/under’ wagers was 140.5 points, only to drop all the way down to 138 in only about an hour this a.m. The Rebels were +190 on the money line (risk $100 to win $190).

John Calipari’s team owns a 7-2 SU record and a 6-3 ATS mark in nine road assignments this season. On the flip side, Ole Miss (19-10 SU, 21-8 ATS) is 11-4 SU and 10-5 ATS at home.

After getting trounced 71-52 on Saturday afternoon at Tennessee, UK is 13-3 in SEC play and one game back of the league’s co-leaders, LSU and UT, who are both 14-2 in conference action. Since the Wildcats split with the Volunteers and lost their only head-to-head meeting with the Tigers, they need to sweep their last two games at Ole Miss and vs. Florida. Also, the Wildcats need LSU to lose Wednesday at Florida and at home vs. Vandy this weekend. UT hosts Mississippi St. tonight (more on this game below in Bonus Nuggets) and closes Saturday at Auburn.

The chances of those three scenarios coming through are slim, especially considering how the Commodores remain winless in SEC play. Therefore, there’s a good chance that UK will be a No. 3 seed at the SEC Tournament in Nashville next week (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing). What’s more important (or costly depending on your mind set) is that a potential showdown with UT in Nashville could determine a No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament (unless that potential meeting comes in the SEC semifinals and the winner falls in the finals).

In Joe Lunardi’s latest edition of ‘Bracketology’ filed this morning to ESPN.com, Kentucky is still on the one line in the Midwest Region facing Sam Houston St. in its NCAA opener in Columbus. OH., for the right to square off against the Texas-UCF survivor of an 8/9 matchup. Kermit Davis’s squad was listed as a No. 10 seed set to take on seventh-seeded Cincinnati in Columbia, S.C., with the winner advancing to most likely face second-seeded North Carolina. In other words, Ole Miss will be in precarious position going into Nashville for the SEC Tournament if it loses to UK tonight and takes another defeat in Saturday’s regular-season finale at Missouri.

Kentucky jumped out to a 6-0 lead at UT on Saturday, but it was all Vols the rest of the way. UT led 37-24 at halftime and the ‘Cats never got closer that 13 in the second half. P.J. Washington was UK’s only double-figure scorer with 13 points thanks to 9-of-13 shooting at the free-throw line. He was only 2-of-6 from the field and had twice as many turnovers (four) as assists (two). Nick Richards had eight points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots, but Tyler Herro was 1-of-11 on FGAs, 0-for-5 on launches from 3-point land and committed five turnovers.

Tennessee had a 15/5 assist-to-turnover ratio, but UK had 11 assists compared to 16 turnovers. The ‘Cats got to the FT line more often, making 19-of-29 FTAs compared to 9-of-14 for UT, and held a 37-34 rebounding advantage. But terrible shooting (31.8% from the field and 26.3 percent from downtown) and too many turnovers were way too much to recover from.

Although UK has struggled to 2-4 spread record in its past six outings, it has still won 17 of its last 20 games while compiling a 13-7 ATS mark. UK is No. 5 in the NCAA’s new NET metrics and No. 9 at KenPom.com. The Wildcats are 9-3 against K-Pom Top-50 opponents and 14-5 against the Top 100. They have Top-30 scalps at Louisville, at Florida, at Auburn and at Mississippi St. in addition to a neutral-court triumph over UNC. The ‘Cats have home victories over Auburn, MSU, Kansas and UT.

Washington has emerged as a first-team All-SEC candidate as a sophomore. He is averaging 14.9 points and 7.7 rebounds per game, in addition to draining 43.5 percent of his treys and blocking 33 shots. Herro (13.9 PPG) is hitting 36.7 percent of his 3-balls and 93.4 percent of his FTAs. Keldon Johnson averages 13.4 points and 5.8 RPG.

Ole Miss has the nation’s third-best ATS record. The Rebels have lost back-to-back games, but they’ve covered the number in both defeats that were by four combined points. They dropped a 73-71 decision to Tennessee last Wednesday as 4.5-point home underdogs before losing 74-73 at Arkansas as 2.5-point ‘dogs on a day in which the Razorbacks celebrated the 25th anniversary of their 1994 national-title team led by Scotty Thurman, Corey Beck, Clint McDaniel, Al Dillard (best range in college hoops history) and Corliss ‘Big Nasty’ Williamson.

In the loss to the Hogs at Bud Walton Arena on Saturday, Arkansas snapped a six-game losing streak thanks to Jalen Harris’s game-winning layup with 5.9 seconds remaining. Ole Miss had led by eight several different times in the first half, but the game would feature 21 lead changes. Breein Tyree, who paced the Rebels with a team-best 20 points, buried a 3-pointer to put his team up 73-70 with 1:07 left.

Bruce Stevens, Devontae Shuler and Terence Davis scored 12 points apiece for Ole Miss in the losing effort. Shuler had six rebounds and four assists, while Davis pulled down five boards and handed out three helpers. The Rebels have lost three of their past four games, sneaking in a 72-71 non-covering win over Georgia as 10-point home ‘chalk.’

Ole Miss is ranked No. 37 in the NET metrics and No. 44 at K-Pom. Davis’s squad has a 4-6 record against K-Pom Top-50 foes and a 7-10 mark versus the Top 100. The Rebels’ best wins are a season sweep of Auburn, at Mississippi St. and a neutral-court scalp of Baylor. The only bad loss is at South Carolina (K-Pom #94).

Tyree averages a team-high 18.3 PPG thanks to 40.3 percent shooting from 3-point territory and an 83.2 percent rate of marksmanship from the charity stripe. Davis (15.5 PPG) paces the Rebels in assists (3.4 APG) and rebounding (5.7 RPG), while Shuler (9.8 PPG) has 89 assists and 52 steals.

Ole Miss has been a home underdog three times, going 2-1 ATS with one outright win over Auburn.

Kentucky has won nine consecutive games in this rivalry while going 6-3 ATS. The ‘Cats have covered in three straight wins that have come by margins of 18, 23 and 22 points. The ‘over’ is on a 6-2 roll in the past eight head-to-head encounters.

UK senior power forward Reid Travis, a grad transfer from Stanford, has missed three straight games with a knee injury and is ‘questionable’ tonight. Travis averages 11.3 points and 6.9 RPG.

The ‘under’ is 18-11 overall for the Rebels, 9-6 in their home games. They’ve watched the ‘under’ connect in four consecutive games and seven of their past eight.

The ‘under’ has cashed in four straight UK games and is on an 8-1 run to improve to 19-10 overall and 6-3 in its road contests.

Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

                              **B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- As of this morning, most spots had Tennessee listed as an eight-point home favorite vs. Mississippi State. The Bulldogs, who are 21-8 SU and 15-14 ATS, have posted a 5-4 record both SU and ATS in nine road assignments. They’ve lost by more than five points only once all season in a 76-55 defeat at Kentucky, but that was a three-point game with 12 minutes left. UT is unbeaten in 17 home games with a 7-8-1 spread ledger. The Volunteers fall into a bit of flat spot after trouncing UK at home on Saturday afternoon. This game will tip at 9:00 p.m. Eastern on the SEC Network.

-- Speaking of potential letdown scenarios, Utah State (24-6 SU, 16-13 ATS) is off a monster home win over Nevada that provided an enormous boost to its profile that more than likely ensures the Aggies of an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament if they can avoid a bad loss moving forward. However, a defeat at Colorado State tonight could put Craig Smith’s team back in danger in terms of its at-large hopes (Lunardi currently has Utah St. as a No 11 seed facing sixth-seeded Villanova in Salt Lake City). This non-televised tilt in Ft. Collins will come off the board at 9:00 p.m. Eastern. Utah St. was favored by eight points at most books this morning and the total was 144.5. The Aggies are 8-4 SU and 5-7 ATS on the road, while CSU is 8-7 SU and 6-8 ATS at home.

-- Alabama, a team that’s right there with Utah State as a No. 11 seed in Lunardi’s latest projection with a first-round with No. 6 Nevada, plays host to Auburn tonight as a 2.5-point home underdog that’s +125 to win outright. Bruce Pearl’s squad is an abysmal 3-6 SU and 2-7 ATS in nine road assignments this year. The Tigers are slated as a seventh seed by Lunardi that would face North Carolina St., with the survivor most likely getting No. 2 Michigan in a Round-of-32 showdown. The SEC Network will provide television coverage at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

-- ICYMI last week: South Carolina’s A.J. Lawson is ‘out’ indefinitely with an ankle injury. Lawson was averaging 13.9 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.0 APG for the Gamecocks, who are 3-8 SU and 5-6 ATS on the road going into tonight’s game at Texas A&M. The Aggies were favored by 4.5 points with a total of 142 this morning. Frank Martin’s club has lost three games in a row both SU and ATS, while the Aggies are 6-2 both SU and ATS in their past eight games. This game will tip at 7:00 p.m. Eastern on the SEC Network.

-- Duke star Zion Williamson (knee) is ‘doubtful’ for tonight’s home game vs. Wake Forest on ESPN at 7:00 p.m. Eastern. The Blue Devils are 26-point ‘chalk.’

                                Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings……

                                13) Last year, five NFL teams drafted a QB in the first round; four of those teams traded up to get their guy, which leads me to believe that there will be trading near the top of the draft again this year, especially if Arizona doesn’t draft Kyler Murray with the #1 pick.

If Arizona doesn’t take Murray, you have to think they’re trading the #1 pick, because there has to be SOMEONE out there who is enamored with Murray, and Arizona could net a couple extra picks to replenish other parts of their team.

                                12) Good move by Major League Baseball; looks like starting next year, rosters will increase to 26 players per team, while September rosters will be capped at 28, instead of 40, the way it is now. Now if they can just get the DH in both leagues as soon as possible.

                                11) Minnesota 73, Purdue 69— Carsen Edwards was 7-31 in this game, 3-15 on the arc- he had one assist. Purdue only took 68 shots; rest of the team was 17-37. Big win for Golden Gophers’ NCAA hopes.

If you go 7-31, do you have to soak your arm after the game?

                                10) Kentucky 80, Ole Miss 76— Rebels lost four of their last five games.

                                9) Duke 71, Wake Forest 70— Blue Devils were favored by 26.5 points; this score will have seeding repercussions if Zion Williamson doesn’t come back.

                                8) Florida State 73, Virginia Tech 64 OT— Hokies tied game on 3-pointer with 0:13 left, but FSU won/covered in OT. Bad beat for Tech backers. Seminoles clinch a double-bye in ACC tourney.

                                7) Oklahoma 81, Kansas 68— Jayhawks lost six of their last eight road games, and for first time in over a decade, they won’t win/share Big X regular season title.

                                6) Auburn 66, Alabama 60— Tigers trailed this game by 13, rallied for a win, but they haven’t been playing very well.

                                5) Bronx pitching ace Luis Severino was scratched from his spring training start with shoulder issue, and may not be ready for Opening Day.

Twins’ 3B Miguel Sano has undergone two debridement procedures on his lower right Achilles since injured the heel during a team celebration in winter league back in January. His foot is in a boot and Sano isn’t likely to play ball for the Twins until May.

                                4) Texas Rangers’ OF Nomar Mazara is the son of a high-ranking official in the Dominican Navy. He played against the Dodgers Sunday; LA broadcaster Nomar Garciaparra said that both his dad and Mazara’s dad are named Ramon, and Nomar, obviously, is Ramon spelled backwards.

                                3) Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney took batting practice with the St Louis Cardinals over the weekend; in the clips I saw, he was making a lot of contact.

                                2) New England Patriots had to replace five assistant coaches from last year, after five of last year’s assistants moved on to other NFL jobs. Lot of turnover for a winning team, as Tom Brady continues to make people he works with wealthier.

                                1) Santa Anita racetrack in southern California suspended racing indefinitely after the 21st horse death there since the winter meet began December 26.
