Game of the Night: Pelicans at Warriors – 10:35 PM EST

Eight games into the season, Golden State (7-1 SU, 4-4 ATS) continues to look like the team that has won three of the past four NBA championships. During this current five-game winning streak, the Warriors have won four of those contest by 20 points or more, while dropping 149 points on the Bulls in Monday’s blowout at the United Center.

Klay Thompson broke the NBA record for most three-pointers made in a game with 14, while putting up 52 points in the win. Perhaps more impressive than Thompson’s shooting barrage was Golden State putting up 92 points in the first half, while picking up a cover as a double-digit favorite for the fourth straight time.

The Pelicans (4-2 SU, 4-2 ATS) jumped out to an impressive 4-0 start, but are coming off back-to-back losses to the Jazz and Nuggets. It’s no coincidence that those defeats were suffered with star Anthony Davis sidelined due to an elbow injury, as his status is in question for tonight’s contest at Oracle Arena. Davis is averaging 27.3 points per game and 13.3 rebounds per game, but replacing the former Kentucky standout is a difficult task. In Monday’s loss at Denver, the Pelicans managed a cover as 9 ½-point underdogs, while fellow UK Wildcat Julius Randle posted a team-high 24 points.

The Warriors knocked out the Pelicans in five games of the opening round of the playoffs last season, but New Orleans managed a pair of covers at Oracle Arena as double-digit underdogs. New Orleans won at Golden State in its final regular season matchup this past April, 126-120 as six-point ‘dogs, as Davis led the Pelicans with 34 points and 12 rebounds.

    Same Record, Different Expectations

Both the Lakers and Mavericks own identical 2-5 records. If we turned the clock back one year ago, this wouldn’t be a surprise for these two Western Conference foes. However, Los Angeles has stumbled out of the gate in LeBron James’ first season in Purple and Gold, as the Lakers return home following consecutive road losses at San Antonio and Minnesota. In Monday’s defeat to the Wolves, James scored 29 points, but Minnesota knocked down 14 three-pointers.

The Mavericks are winless away from American Airlines Center this season at 0-4, but picked up a cover as seven-point ‘dogs in Monday’s overtime defeat at San Antonio. Dallas is riding a three-game OVER streak, but have lost four straight since picking up back-to-back home wins over Minnesota and Chicago. Rookie Luka Doncic has been impressive for Dallas through seven games by averaging 20.4 ppg, while scoring a season-high 31 points against the Spurs.

This will be by far the weakest opponent the Lakers have faced at Staples Center this season, as L.A. has already lost to Houston and San Antonio, while handing Denver its only loss. The Lakers captured three of four matchups from the Mavs last season, including a pair of wins at Staples by double-digits.

    Bull Crap

That’s exactly what Chicago (2-5 SU, 3-4 ATS) looked like on Monday night in a 149-124 rout at the hands of Golden State. It would have been worse if the Warriors didn’t call off the dogs after scoring 125 points through three quarters, as Chicago suffered its first ATS loss at the United Center this season. The Bulls welcome in another tough Western opponent tonight as Denver makes its lone trip to the Windy City this season.

The Nuggets (5-1 SU, 4-2 ATS) have played a home-heavy schedule so far by posting a 4-0 mark at the Pepsi Center, but failed to cash as nine-point favorites in Monday’s 116-111 victory over the Pelicans. The backcourt duo of Gary Harris and Jamal Murray scored 23 points apiece, while the Nuggets moved to 3-1 to the UNDER at home this season. In fact, this is the first game played east of Denver this season for the Nuggets, whose first two road games were against the L.A. teams. The Nuggets have won five straight meetings with the Bulls, including two straight blowouts at the United Center.

    Perfect Sound

The Jazz (4-2 SU, 4-2 ATS) have yet to win a game at home this season, but are riding a 4-0 record away from Salt Lake City. Utah tries to finish off its four-game road trip without a blemish as the Jazz face the Wolves at Target Center. The first three wins were impressive as Utah knocked off Houston, New Orleans, and Dallas, while shooting 52% from the floor in Sunday’s nine-point victory over the Mavericks.

Minnesota (3-4 SU, 3-4 ATS) has not won back-to-back games yet this season, coming off Monday’s 124-120 triumph over the Lakers as a short ‘dog. Jimmy Butler is still on the trade block for Minnesota, but the forward scored 32 points, while knocking down 6-of-7 three-point attempts. These two Northwest division foes split four meetings last season, as each team won one matchup at home and one on the road.

    Slowing Down

The Pistons (4-2 SU, 2-4 ATS) rolled out to a fast 4-0 start with only one win against a quality team, edging the 76ers in overtime. Detroit fell back to Earth following back-to-back losses to Boston, but the Pistons hung around in Tuesday’s 108-105 setback at TD Garden as 8 ½-point underdogs. Blake Griffin rebounded from a seven-point performance last Saturday against the Celtics to score 24 points last night and pull down 15 boards.

Detroit heads to Brooklyn with no rest to square off with a Nets’ (2-5 SU, 4-3 ATS) squad that is riding a three-game skid since routing Cleveland last Wednesday. Brooklyn is sitting in the favorite role for the second time this season as the Nets look to avenge an opening night loss at Detroit, 103-100 as six-point underdogs. The Nets haven’t had much luck against the Pistons at home, dropping a pair of contests last season at Barclays Center by 34 and 12 points.

      • Rose scores career-high 50 points, Timberwolves beat Jazz
        October 31, 2018
        By The Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Derrick Rose scored a career-high 50 points, turning back the clock to his prime years and lifting the Minnesota Timberwolves over the Utah Jazz 128-125 on Wednesday night.

Rose was in tears after the game as he walked off the court serenaded by chants of ''MVP! MVP!'' from the home crowd. The 30-year-old point guard has been derailed by injuries since he was the 2011 NBA MVP.

He had 34 points in the second half and 15 in a tightly contested fourth quarter as the Wolves held off the Jazz. His basket down low with 30 seconds remaining put Minnesota up for good, and he made two free throws with 13.8 seconds left to preserve a three-point lead.

Rudy Gobert missed a tying attempt in the final minute for Utah, and the Timberwolves grabbed the rebound to ensure Rose's big night wasn't wasted.

Making his first start of the season, Rose scored 19 points in the third quarter as the Timberwolves took a five-point lead into the fourth. Karl-Anthony Towns added nine of his 28 points in the period.

Donovan Mitchell scored 26 points, and Gobert added 22 for Utah.

        PACERS 107, KNICKS 101

NEW YORK (AP) - Domantas Sabonis matched his career high with 30 points, Victor Oladipo scored 11 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter and Indiana beat New York.

Indiana trailed 97-94 with 3:08 left before Oladipo got hot. Sabonis hit two free throws, and then Oladipo picked off Tim Hardaway Jr.'s lazy dribble and threw down a breakaway dunk for a 98-97 lead. Indiana scored the next five points, capped by Oladipo's 3-pointer with 1:23 left, to make it 103-97.

Hardaway led the Knicks with 37 points, and Noah Vonleh had 14 points and 10 rebounds. New York has lost six of seven since winning on opening night.

Alonzo Trier's basket cut New York's deficit to 103-101 with 44 seconds left, but Thaddeus Young found Oladipo open in front of the Knicks bench for a 3-pointer.

        NETS 120, PISTONS 119, OT

NEW YORK (AP) - Spencer Dinwiddie made a 3-pointer with 7.1 seconds left in overtime and finished with 25 points to help Brooklyn beat Detroit.

Joe Harris added 23 points, Caris LeVert and Jarrett Allen had 19 each, and Jared Dudley finished with 11. The Nets snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 3-5.

Blake Griffin led Detroit with 25 points, Andre Drummond had 24 points and 23 rebounds, and Reggie Jackson scored 21 points. After Dinwiddie's late 3-poiter, Griffin missed a fadeaway. The Pistons have dropped three straight to fall to 4-3.

        NUGGETS 108, BULLS 107, OT

CHICAGO (AP) - Paul Millsap's putback with 0.1 seconds left in overtime lifted Denver past Chicago.

Denver inbounded with 3.5 seconds remaining. Nikola Jokic missed, but Millsap grabbed the rebound and converted a layup off the glass. Nuggets improved to 6-1.

Jokic had 22 points and 12 rebounds. Zach LaVine scored 28 points for Chicago, and Wendell Carter Jr. added a career-high 25.

            **************************

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

            13) Packers traded RB Ty Montgomery to Houston Tuesday, less than 48 hours after he fumbled a kickoff that cost the Packers a chance to rally in the last 2:00 of a 29-27 loss in LA.

Green Bay coaches apparently told Montgomery NOT to run the ball out of the end zone, but he was annoyed because he hadn’t played as much as he thought he should earlier in the game, so he took matters into his own hands, but then the ball was knocked out of his hands.

            Now Montgomery plays for Houston.

            12) If you like basketball and you haven’t seen ESPN’s historical basketball series that runs on Tuesday nights, you should— lot of great history.

Interviews, clips with the guys we’ve been watching on TV for decades— good stuff.

            11) One of the clips was an exhibition game between a bunch of college all-stars and some NBA all-stars in Phoenix. Michael Jordan/Patrick Ewing were on the college team; one of the other players on the college team was Leon Wood from Cal State-Fullerton, who wound up playing parts of seven years in the NBA— for the last 22 years, Wood has been an NBA referee.

            10) My all-time starting five for NBA players:
            C- Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
            F- Bill Russell
            F- Lebron James
            G- Michael Jordan
            G- Magic Johnson

Coming up with a second team could start a lot of arguments……..

            9) So far in the NFL this season, an average of 48.2 points/game have been scored, teams have thrown for an average of 252.5 yards/game and averaged 5.7 yards per pay, all-time highs thru eight games for any season ever.

Despite all that, over is 60-60-1 in NFL games this season.

            8) NFL suspended Seattle LB Mychal Hendricks until Week 14 for off-field issues that revolve around insider trading in the stock market.

            7) Big 14 Conference hasn’t won a national title in basketball since Michigan State in 2000.

            6) Big Sky Conference was the most improved basketball conference in the country LY; their RPI jumped from 28th to 17th. Lot of good, experienced teams; can they maintain their ranking this winter?

            5) Iona released one of its basketball players who got into a scuffle with an assistant coach and sent the coach to the hospital- the kid averaged 11 points, five rebounds a game LY, so it’ll be a pretty big loss for the Gaels.

            4) Milwaukee Brewers had a terrific season, but they’ve already lost three coaches since the season ended; their pitching coach, hitting coach and bullpen coach have all either quit or been fired, which seems odd for a team that did so well this season.

            3) This from football expert Warren Sharp: Cleveland Browns are +11 in turnover ratio with a 2-5-1 record; since 2006, there have been 38 teams whose turnover ratio was +8 or better after eight games- none of the 38 teams had a losing record.

Since 1975, 71 teams had a +11 or better turnover ratio thru eight games; none of the 71 teams had a losing record.

            2) With Hue Jackson getting fired, this is the 4th year in a row that the team drafting the first QB in the NFL Draft fired its coach during that year or just after the season.

            2015: Lovie Smith/Jameis Winston
            2016: Jeff Fisher/Jared Goff
            2017: John Fox/Mitch Trubisky
            2018: Hue Jackson/Baker Mayfield

            1) RIP to the great Willie McCovey, who passed away Monday at age 80. McCovey hit 521 home runs homers in his Hall of Fame career- he led the NL in homers in 1968 and 1969.

            RIP, sir.

                        November 1, 2018
                        By Chris David

                        (Straight Up, Against the Spread)

Game of the Night (TNT, 8:05 p.m. ET)

Milwaukee (7-0 SU, 5-2 ATS) at Boston (5-2 SU, 3-4 ATS)

Thursday’s top NBA matchup between the Bucks and Celtics will be a rematch of last year’s Eastern Conference first round playoff series. Boston defeated Milwaukee in seven games as the home team held serve in every contest, which included a 112-96 win by the Celtics in Game 7.

Fast forward six months and Milwaukee has had an incredible start to its 2018-19 campaign and it lays claim to the last unbeaten team in the NBA. Six of its seven victories have come by double digits, which includes a 124-109 win over Toronto on Tuesday.

After starting the season 2-2, the Celtics have ripped off three straight wins and they’re doing so with defense. Boston is allowing 97.6 points per game, ranked first in the league and the only team to hold anybody under the century mark. Make a note that Milwaukee (104.1 PPG) isn’t far behind defensively.

The largest improvement thus far for the Bucks is their offense, which is averaging 120 PPG and that’s a huge increase from the 106.1 PPG production last season. Boston (102.4 PPG) hasn’t shot the ball well all season but their last two efforts (109, 108) in wins over Detroit were the highest marks this season.

VegasInsider.com NBA expert Tony Mejia weighed in on the showdown from TD Garden tonight.

Mejia said, “Giannis Antetokounmpo clearing concussion protocol means we get to see where the Bucks sit in the East pecking order immediately, especially if Jaylen Brown is able to participate for Boston. The addition of Brook Lopez and Ersan Ilyasova allows Greek Freak to concentrate on attacking the paint since both bigs spread the floor so well and drag opposing frontcourt defenders out to the perimeter. In this case, Al Horford and Aron Baynes will be affected.”

“It’s a short sample size, but it should be pointed out that the Magic upset the Celtics in Boston with Nikola Vucevic shooting 11-for-18 and showing off a great touch from the outside, while the other centers they’ve played – Joel Embiid, Jonas Valanciunas, Steven Adams and Andre Drummond are all traditional back-to-the-basket types.”

“Look for this to work to Milwaukee’s benefit and don’t be surprised if this total winds up being the Celtics’ largest of the season to date, besting the 219 that was set for their visit to OKC on Oct. 25.”

The total opened at 215 and while Boston has been a great ‘under’ lean (5-2) the Bucks have watched the ‘over’ go 5-2.

                        Home/Away Tendencies

Charlotte (4-4 SU, 6-2 ATS) has turned a profit for bettors this season, especially at home (2-1 SU, 3-0 ATS). The Hornets opened as slight home favorites over Oklahoma City (2-4 SU, 2-4 ATS) tonight and the Thunder are winless (0-2 SU, 1-1 ATS) on the road. I expect the public to lean to the visitor in this matchup but backing OKC on the road has been a poor investment dating back to last season and the Thunder remain the worst 3-point shooting team (27.5%) in the league.

After eight games, the book is out on Philadelphia (4-4 SU, 4-4 ATS) and its numbers have been solid at home (4-0) and poor on the road (0-4). The Clippers (4-3 SU, 4-3 ATS) visit tonight as underdogs and their only win on the road (1-2) came against the James Harden-less Rockets. Along with strong home numbers, the 76ers could be identified as bullies. Four wins against the Bulls, Magic, Hornets and Hawks certainly doesn’t make noise while the losses came to the three best teams in the East (Celtics, Bucks, Raptors) and a formidable Pistons squad. I think it’s fair to say that Los Angeles is ranked in between those groups and that’s why this line is Philadelphia (-5) isn’t as high.

                        Five Straight?

After starting the season with a 1-3 record, Sacramento (5-3 SU, 6-2 ATS) has ripped off four straight wins and they’ll go for its fifth in a row Thursday when it meets Atlanta (2-5 SU, 2-5 ATS) on the road. As you often hear in our industry, the Kings go from hunter to hunted as they opened as short road favorites (-2) over the Hawks. This is the first time this season that Sacramento is listed in the favorite role and doing so on the road is a tad surprising but the Hawks certainly deserve that treatment. Atlanta has only played two games int its new digs (State Farm Arena) and a 1-1 record could easily be 0-2 if Dallas didn’t collapse (111-104) to the Hawks in the opener on Oct. 24.

The stat that catches my eye with Sacramento comes from its offense, which is ranked third in field goal percentage (49.8%) and fourth in 3-point field goal percentage (40%). I doubt the Kings can maintain that pace but they’re super athletic and they’ve got a bunch of young guys that can finish at the rim. Knowing the Hawks aren’t as deep as Sacramento, I would lean to the visitor in this spot but the wake-up call is coming. The Kings finish up their four-game road trip at Milwaukee on Sunday in a game that is scheduled in the afternoon (3:30 p.m. ET).

If you’re not sold on the Hawks or Kings, you’re looking at a total of 231 and that’s the highest number on the board. It makes sense based on the defensive numbers for both the Kings (116.8 PPG) and Hawks (116.9 PPG). Last season, the pair split their two meetings with the home team posting a double-digit victory in each contest.

                        Zero Days Rest

Denver (6-1 SU, 4-3 ATS) survived a scare at Chicago last night and escaped with a 108-107 win but never came close to covering as an eight-point road favorite. For the second straight night, the Nuggets will be laying points on the road when they visit Cleveland. The Nuggets have gone 1-0 both SU and ATS on no rest this season but they played that game at home, which was a 100-98 win over Golden State on Oct. 21.

The Cavaliers (1-6 SU, 4-3 ATS) just won their first game of the season on Tuesday, a 136-114 blowout win over Atlanta as 4 ½-point home favorites. Prior to that win, Cleveland was 0-3 both SU and ATS at Quicken Loans Arena and all of the losses came by double digits.

New Orleans (4-3 SU, 4-3 ATS) did as much as it could but still dropped a 131-121 decision at Golden State on Wednesday as a nine-point underdog. Tonight, the club will visit the Moda Center to face Portland (5-2 SU, 5-2 ATS). The Pelicans have only faced a back-to-back spot once this season and they got blitzed 132-111 at home by the Jazz on Oct. 27. All-Star Anthony Davis sat out that game and his absence was obviously felt.

If you’ve read my “ITP” columns before, you’ve probably heard me talk about fading teams in their first game back after a road trip of three or more games. It hasn’t clicked this season but something to keep an eye on and Portland faces the angle tonight after finishing its four-game road trip with a 3-1 record.

In case you forgot, the Pelicans embarrassed the Trail Blazers in the first round of the playoffs last season with a 4-0 sweep. There was no answer for Davis or Jrue Holiday and while some may play the revenge factor, sometimes you have to play the matchup. Including the outcome of that series, New Orleans has won eight of the last 10 and that includes a 4-1 record at Portland.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Joel Embiid had 41 points and 13 rebounds, helping the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Los Angeles Clippers 122-113 on Thursday night.

It was Embiid's sixth game already this season with at least 30 points and 10 rebounds.

Ben Simmons added 14 points and 11 assists, bouncing back nicely from one of his worst games as a pro. Markelle Fultz provided a spark late in the third quarter and finished with 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists while helping Philadelphia improve to 5-0 at home.

Lou Williams scored 26 points for the Clippers, and Danilo Gallinari had 25. Tobias Harris finished with 24 points.

                            CELTICS 117, BUCKS 113

BOSTON (AP) - Kyrie Irving scored 28 points, making six of Boston's franchise-record 24 3-pointers, and the Celtics beat Milwaukee, knocking off the last unbeaten team in the NBA.

Gordon Hayward added a season-high 18 points, Al Horford also had 18 and Marcus Morris 17 points.

Giannis Antetokounmpo returned to the lineup after missing one game while in the NBA's concussion protocol and led Milwaukee with 33 points and 11 rebounds.

                            KINGS 146, HAWKS 115

ATLANTA (AP) - De'Aaron Fox set career highs with 31 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds for his first career triple-double, and Sacramento beat Atlanta for its fifth straight victory.

Buddy Hield scored 27 points and Nemanja Bjelica had 19. The Kings' winning streak includes four straight against Eastern Conference teams, including the last three on the road.

Jeremy Lin scored 23 points for the Hawks. They have lost four straight.

                            THUNDER 111, HORNETS 107

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Russell Westbrook had 29 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds and Oklahoma City overcame a 19-point third-quarter deficit to beat Charlotte.

Alex Abrines had 25 points on five 3-pointers to help the Thunder win their third straight.

Malik Monk and Kemba Walker each had 21 points for the Hornets. They were 11 of 41 from 3-point range.

                            NUGGETS 110, CAVALIERS 91

CLEVELAND (AP) - Juancho Hernangomez scored 23 points, Paul Millsap added 16 and Denver rolled past Cleveland Cavaliers 110-91 on Thursday night.

The Nuggets won their third straight to improve to 7-1. On Wednesday night in Chicago, they beat the Bulls 108-107 in overtime on Millsap's putback with 0.1 seconds left.

Jordan Clarkson led Cleveland with 17 points. The Cavaliers dropped to 1-7. They have split two games under ''acting'' coach Larry Drew.

                            TRAIL BLAZERS 132, PELICANS 119

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Damian Lillard scored 26 points to help Portland beat New Orleans in the first meeting between the teams since the Pelicans swept the Trail Blazers in the first round of last season's playoffs.

Jusuf Nurkic added 20 points and nine rebounds for the Blazers, who made 18 3-pointers in their third straight win.

New Orleans dropped its fourth consecutive game. The Pelicans were the sixth seed last season when they upset the third-seeded Blazers in the playoffs.

Julius Randle scored 29 points, but Pelicans star Anthony Davis was sidelined by a right elbow sprain. Davis had returned from the injury Wednesday night against Golden State, when he collected 17 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists in a 131-121 loss to the Warriors.
