Tatum helps Celtics hold off Knicks
      October 20, 2018
      By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Jayson Tatum had 24 points and 14 rebounds, and the Boston Celtics withstood his careless foul with 1.9 seconds left to beat the New York Knicks 103-101 on Saturday night.

Tatum had just given the Celtics a three-point lead with two free throws with 7.9 seconds left and the Knicks called their final timeout. They had trouble getting the ball inbounded from the sideline, and Knicks guard Trey Burke had to race into the backcourt to retrieve it as the clocked ran down. He pulled up for a 3-pointer from well beyond the arc and Tatum jumped to contest it, fouling Burke for three free throws that could have tied it.

But he missed the first and the Knicks couldn't grab the rebound when he intentionally missed the third.

Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 24 points for the Knicks, who lost rookie Kevin Knox to a sprained left ankle in the first quarter. Enes Kanter had 17 points and 15 rebounds before fouling out of their second two-point loss in two nights.

      ROCKETS 124, LAKERS 115

LOS ANGELES (AP) - LeBron James scored 24 points for the Lakers in his wild home debut, which included three players getting ejected for fighting late in the fourth quarter.

Houston's Chris Paul and the Lakers' Brandon Ingram and Rajon Rondo were tossed with 4:13 to play after a prolonged series of confrontations that put an ugly end on a celebratory night for Lakers fans eager to welcome James to the West Coast.

The game was close until Ingram was called for a foul while trying to defend an aggressive drive by James Harden, who finished with 36 points.

When the action cooled, Harden hit a key 3-pointer to propel the Rockets to their first win of the season.

James also had five rebounds and five assists. JaVale McGee had 16 points and six rebounds in his own Lakers home debut, while Rondo had 13 points and 10 assists before getting thrown out.

Paul had 28 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds before getting tossed.

      76ERS 116, MAGIC 115

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - JJ Redick hit a 3-pointer with 17 seconds left to lift the 76ers over the Magic.

Redick had his best game since moving to Philadelphia's bench at the start of the season, scoring 31 points on 10-of-20 shooting, including eight 3-pointers.

Aaron Gordon had a chance to tie it with 10 seconds remaining but missed his second free throw, and a desperation heave by Terrance Ross missed the net entirely.

Joel Embiid had 32 points and 10 rebounds for the 76ers, including 19 points by halftime. He did it with an outside game in the first half but was more of a force down low after intermission.

      RAPTORS 117, WIZARDS 113

WASHINGTON (AP) - Taking over with Kawhi Leonard getting a night off, Kyle Lowry delivered 28 points and 12 assists Saturday night to help the Raptors improve to 3-0 with a victory over the Wizards.

The Raptors rested Leonard on the second half of a back-to-back and third game in four days to open the season.

Washington finished the game without ejected coach Scott Brooks. Bradley Beal scored 32 points, going 6 for 11 on 3s, and John Wall added 25 points and six assists for the Wizards, who are 0-2, with both games at home.

Beal broke Washington's franchise record for most 3-pointers in a career, surpassing Gilbert Arenas' previous mark of 868 by making his 869th with a little more than 4+ minutes left in the game.

      PACERS 132, NETS 112

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Victor Oladipo had 25 points and seven rebounds to lead the Pacers to a victory over the Nets.

Kyle O'Quinn came off the bench and scored 14 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter. Bojan Bogdanovic and Tyreke Evans each scored 15 points for the Pacers (2-1), who bounced back following a 118-101 loss at Milwaukee on Friday, the first night of a back-to-back.

Joe Harris and Caris LeVert each scored 19 points for the Nets (1-2), who have lost seven straight at Indiana.

      HORNETS 113, HEAT 112

MIAMI (AP) - Kemba Walker scored 39 points, including the game-winning free throw with a half-second left, and the Hornets spoiled Dwyane Wade's final home opener by topping the Heat.

The Hornets led by 26 points midway through the third quarter, then wasted it all before Walker saved them on a night when he eclipsed the career 10,000-point mark.

Wade scored to tie the game with 12.3 seconds left, setting up the final play. Walker drove on Miami's Rodney McGruder, wound up on the ground and referee Scott Wall called a blocking foul - one the Heat argued to no avail. Walker made the first, missed the second and time expired before anyone could contain the rebound.

Wade led the Heat with 21 points. Goran Dragic scored 20, McGruder finished with 19 and Hassan Whiteside grabbed 15 rebounds for Miami.

      PISTONS 118, BULLS 116

CHICAGO (AP) - Blake Griffin had 33 points and 12 rebounds, Ish Smith scored all 15 of his points in the second half, including the game-winning basket, and the Pistons beat the Bulls.

Griffin was 12 for 23 from the field, including 5 of 7 on 3-pointers, as Detroit won its second straight to start the season.

Zach LaVine had 33 points on 12-of-22 shooting for Chicago, which dropped its second consecutive game. The Bulls played without starters Kris Dunn (excused absence) and Lauri Markkanen (sprained right elbow), and reserve Denzel Valentine (left ankle).

With the score tied at 116, Smith drove through the defense for a layup with 5.4 seconds left.

      MAVERICKS 140, TIMBERWOLVES 136

DALLAS (AP) - Luka Doncic scored 26 points in the teenager's home debut, Dennis Smith Jr. converted a tiebreaking three-point play with six seconds left and the Mavericks beat the Timberwolves in a wild offensive game.

DeAndre Jordan had 22 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks for the Mavericks in his first game in front of the fans who used to boo him unmercifully after the Texas native backed out on a pledge to join Dallas in free agency three years ago.

The Timberwolves didn't seem to miss Jimmy Butler much after letting the disgruntled guard stay home to rest on the second night of their first back-to-back this season. Minnesota matched the most points Dallas has given up a first quarter while going up 46-37.

Karl-Anthony Towns scored 31 points, including an off-balance 3-pointer that helped get the Timberwolves close in the final minute.

      NUGGETS 119, SUNS 91

DENVER (AP) - Nikola Jokic scored 35 points, posted a triple-double and didn't miss a field goal in leading Denver.

Jokic, who had 10 assists and 10 rebounds, joined Wilt Chamberlain as the only players in NBA history to post a triple-double with 30 or more points without missing a field goal. Chamberlain did it twice, in 1966 and `67.

Jokic made all 11 of his shots from the floor and missed just one of 11 free throws.

Jamal Murray added 26 points for the Nuggets, who are off to their first 2-0 start since 2011-12 and will go for their first 3-0 start since 2009-10 when they host the two-time defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors on Sunday night.

Devin Booker's 25 points led the Suns.

      TRAIL BLAZERS 121, SPURS 108

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Damian Lillard had 29 points and CJ McCollum added 24 as Portland opened the season with a pair of home wins.

Jusuf Nurkic added 12 points for the Blazers, who led the Spurs by as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter after a close first half.

DeMar DeRozan had 28 points and nine rebounds in a second strong performance after coming to the Spurs in an offseason trade.

Portland's season has started on a somber note following the death of owner Paul Allen. The enigmatic co-founder of Microsoft died Monday in Seattle from complications of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He was 65.

          Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Top 6 picks in Week 7 of Westgate SuperBook NFL handicapping contest (3,123 entries)

          1) Vikings, -3 (1,192)

          2) Patriots, -3 (966)

          3) Chiefs, -6 (886)

          4) Lions, -2.5 (841)

          5) Ravens, -3.5 (837)

          6) Buccaneers, -3 (743)

          Season record: 15-19-2

          **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

          13) Purdue 49, Ohio State 20— Boilermakers led this game 14-3 at halftime; Ohio State threw 73 passes, ran ball only 25 times in an ugly loss.

Ohio State threw 73 passes? Woody Hayes must be turning over in his grave.

Chances are there is lot going on behind the scenes in Columbus:
          — Urban Meyer didn’t coach the first three games (suspended) this season.
          — Star DE Joey Rosa bolted school this week to get ready for the NFL Draft
          — Buckeyes have a freshman QB from Las Vegas sitting on the bench who is more of a runner; could it be they’re going to use him in packages, to balance out their offense?

          12) Michigan 21, Michigan State 7— Spartans ran 51 plays in this game, for only 94 yards- they were 0-12 on third down, completed only 7-28 passes, ran ball 23 times for 15 yards. Just total domination by Michigan’s defense.

In their last two games, Michigan opponents completed 14-48 passes.

There was a 65-minute lightning delay in the first quarter; don’t think it had an effect on the outcome.

          11) Washington State 34, Oregon 20— ESPN’s Game Day was in Pullman Saturday morning; the crowd was estimated at “over 40,000 people” and the show started before the sun came out in the western time zone. These are the glory days for Wazzu football, and they had Drew Bledsoe play there in the 90’s.

Mike Leach makes $2.95M a year; he went 84-43 at Texas Tech, is 43-39 at Washington State; ain’t easy to win at the big-time level in Lubbock and/or Pullman. Wazzu was 9-40 the four years before Leach arrived— keep that in mind.

          10) LSU 19, Mississippi State 3— Bayou Bengals have a kicker named Cole Tracy who is a grad transfer from Assumption, a small school in Worcester, MA. He may be the only person in the history of man to transfer from Assumption to LSU, especially to play football.

          9) Old Dominion 37, Western Kentucky 34— You won’t see a stranger end to a game.

Hilltoppers scored a TD run to go ahead 34-27 with 1:37 left.

Old Dominion came back and tied the game 34-34 on a TD pass with 0:10 left.

WKU missed a long FG at the gun, but the Monarchs had 12 men on the field, so Hilltoppers got another try to win the game.

WKU misses the next kick short; Old Dominion runs the ball all the way back to the Hilltopper 15-yard line, and there is a facemark penalty on the play against WKU, so they get to kick the game-winning FG.

Damn, thats a brutal way to lose.

          8) Marshall 31, Florida Atlantic 7— Yardage was about even here, but Owls were -5 in turnovers; Marshall’s first three TD drives were only 43-27-13 yards.

You go minus-5 in turnovers, you’re going to lose.

          7) Upsets of the Week:
          — Purdue (+13.5) 49, Ohio State 20— Fun night in West Lafayette, ya think?
          — Virginia (+7) 28, Duke 14
          — SMU (+7) 27, Tulane 23
          — Old Dominion (+5) 37, Western Kentucky 34

          6) Syracuse 40, North Carolina 37 OT— Orangemen tied game on a 42-yard TD pass with 1:39 left in regulation, then won the game in OT to improve their record to 5-2. UNC is 1-5, losing its last two games by three points each.

          5) Army 31, Miami OH 30 OT— Miami scored TD in OT to make scored 31-30, then went for two points and the win instead of the tying PAT- they didn’t get it, so they lose.

Not a fan of going for two there, especially since Miami was playing a service academy, so chances are Miami has a better kicker than Army.

Akron 24, Kent State 23 OT— Golden Flashes did same damn thing, and they lost, too.

          4) Penn State 33, Indiana 28— Hoosiers passed up an easy FG with about 2:00 left in first half, but got ball back, then screwed up their clock management and never got a FG attempt off. They will be sick thinking about the chances they squandered in this game.

Indiana had 32 first downs; they outgained Penn State 554-417. But they lost, turning ball over three times and going 9-21 on third down.

          3) Alabama 58, Tennessee 21— Why are Alabama games always on TV? They’re boring as hell; Alabama is so much better than everyone else, their games suck to watch. Total yardage in the first quarter of this game was 217-6.

Crimson Tide’s first TD came 4:02 into the game; that was the longest Alabama has gone all season before scoring their first TD of a game.

That Alabama-Citadel game on November 17 should be awesome.

          2) Houston 49, Navy 36— Middies led this game 24-21 at halftime; didn’t even cover the 12.5-point spread. This is Navy’s worst team maybe since a 2-10 team in 2002.

          1) Dodgers-Red Sox World Series; the TV moguls have to be pleased.

Young has 35 points, Hawks rout Cavs 133-111
                October 21, 2018
                By The Associated Press

DENVER (AP) Gary Harris scored 28 points, Juancho Hernangomez blocked a tying layup just before the buzzer and the Denver Nuggets beat the Golden State Warriors 100-98 on Sunday night.

Trailing by 13 points in the fourth quarter, the Warriors rallied and had a chance to tie it in the waning seconds. Stephen Curry drove down the lane and passed to big man Damian Jones, who had his shot blocked from behind by Hernangomez.

The Nuggets improved to 3-0 despite missing 18 free throws, including six in the final quarter.

Nikola Jokic had 23 points, 11 rebounds and six assist in his bid for a triple-double on a second straight night.

The 3-0 start is Denver's best since the 2009-10 squad led by Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups began 5-0. This victory was driven by defense. Denver was sluggish in the second game of a back-to-back but turned up the defensive intensity. The Nuggets forced 18 turnovers.

No surprise, Curry hit three straight 3-pointers in a 1:11 span to lead the comeback. He finished with 30 points and had six 3-pointers to move him past Paul Pierce for sixth place on the NBA's career list.

Draymond Green had a chance to tie the game at 99-all with 9.6 seconds remaining, but his second free throw rolled out. Jamal Murray made one of two free throws on the other end to make it 100-98 and set the stage for Hernangomez.

                HAWKS 133, CAVALIERS 111

CLEVELAND (AP) - Trae Young had 35 points with 11 assists - the best line for a first-year player since Steph Curry in 2010 - and Atlanta dropped Cleveland to 0-3 as it re-adjusts to life without LeBron James.

The No. 5 overall pick, Young is the first rookie to reach at least 35 points and 10 assists since Steph Curry in 2010. Young made six of Atlanta's 22 3-pointers while overshadowing Cleveland rookie guard Collin Sexton. Young missed four of his first five shots, but finished 13 of 23 from the field.

Kent Bazemore added 23 points for Atlanta.

Kevin Love had 16 points and 17 rebounds for Cleveland.

                CLIPPERS 115, ROCKETS 112

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Montrezl Harrell led a fourth-quarter charge by the Clippers' reserves with 17 points, and Los Angeles defeated Houston.

Harrell and the bench helped the Clippers erase a four-point deficit late in the third, with Luc Mbah a Moute's 3-pointer giving them the lead for good.

Tobias Harris led the Clippers with 23 points. Danilo Gallinari added 20 and Harrell had 10 rebounds.

The Rockets were without Chris Paul against his old team. He began serving a two-game suspension for his involvement in an on-court fight against the Lakers on Saturday.

James Harden had 31 points and 14 assists for the Rockets. He scored nine straight points to draw Houston within three with 29 seconds left. But his potential tying 3-pointer was short on the left side as time expired.

                KINGS 131, THUNDER 120

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Iman Shumpert scored 26 points and Sacramento beat Oklahoma City to spoil Russell Westbrook's season debut.

Westbrook missed the preseason and the first two regular-season games after having a procedure to deal with inflammation in his right knee. He had 32 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists in 35 minutes after averaging a triple-double the past two seasons,

De'Aaron Fox added 22 points for the Kings. Paul George scored 29 points for the Thunder.

NBA ATS Picks - Magic vs. Celtics

The Boston Celtics are favored at home on Monday night, as they host the Orlando Magic on NBA TV. The Magic come into this game at 1-2 and off a crushing 116-115 loss to Philadelphia on Saturday, while the Celtics are 2-1 and coming off a 103-101 win at New York. The Celtics have owned the Magic when the games have been played in Boston, going 27-11-1 ATS in the last 39 meetings.

Let’s look at Monday’s game and NBA picks.

                            Orlando Magic vs. Boston Celtics
Date and Time: Monday, October 22, 2016, 7:30 p.m. ET
                            Location: TD Garden, Boston, MA
Opening NBA BetDSI Odds: Celtics -12, O/U 210.5
Magic vs. Celtics TV Coverage: NBA TV

This is not a great spot for Orlando, as they will be playing their third game in four days. The only good news is that the Magic did have Sunday off. Orlando is coming off a very tough loss on Saturday, as they had a chance to beat Philadelphia on the road but lost 116-115. Orlando got great games from Evan Fournier and Nikola Vucevic. Fornier had 31 points, while Vucevic, picked up his second career triple-double with 27 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists.

Orlando head coach Steve Clifford said that his team made too many mistakes. ``We played better and should have won the game, but we made two huge – huge – defensive game plan mistakes late that we had defended the whole game. You can’t make those mistakes and win on the road against a good team.”

Vucevic said to the media that the team can’t be satisfied with just coming close. “We can be proud of the way that we fought, but we can’t be satisfied with that because the goal isn’t to play hard and have a close loss.”

The Celtics got a tough win on Saturday against the Knicks at MSG, as Jayson Tatum scored 24 points including the game winner. Tatum did end up fouling Tre Burke on a three-pointer, but Burke missed his first free throw and the Celtics got the rebound on his third try that was intentionally missed. The Celtics gave Gordon Hayward the night off against the Knicks, but he is expected to be in the lineup on Monday.

                            Matchup to Watch

Keep an eye on the matchup in the backcourt. The Magic simply have to win with Evan Fournier and D.J. Augustin going against Jaylen Brown and Kyrie Irving because Orlando is not going to win down low. The Celtics have Tatum, Hayward and Horford down low, so the Magic have to win the matchup of the guards.

                            Key Stats

The Magic are 11-27-1 ATS in the last 39 meetings in Boston. The Magic are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight up loss. The Magic are 13-6-1 ATS in their last 20 road games. The Magic are 8-18-1 ATS in their last 27 vs. the Atlantic. The Celtics are 20-7 ATS in their last 27 home games. The Celtics are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 vs. the Southeast.

Looking at the total, the Under is 4-1 in Orlando’s last 5 overall. The Under is 10-3 in Orlando’s last 13 games playing with one day of rest. The Under is 8-3 in Orlando’s last 11 road games. The Under is 5-0 in the Celtics last 5 home games.

                            Magic vs. Celtics Free Picks

The Magic might be okay early in this game, but I think as the game progresses they could struggle, as this is their third game in four days. The Celtics are very tough to beat at home and they will have Hayward fully rested for this one. I also expect Irving to start playing better, as this will be his fourth game of the season. The trends are also overwhelmingly in favor of the Celtics, as they have dominated Orlando in Boston. I will lay the points and take the Celtics in this contest. I also think the under is worth a look, as both teams rank near the bottom of the league in points per game.

Magic vs. Celtics Score Prediction: Celtics 110, Magic 95

NBA Preview - San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers are shorthanded early in the season due to the fallout of the brawl with the Rockets last week. Point guard Rajon Rondo and power forward Brandon Ingram both threw punches in an altercation with Chris Paul and each have been suspended multiple games. They are both expected to miss this week’s game against the San Antonio Spurs.

The Lakers are 0-2 on the season but they have had a pair of tough games against the Trail Blazers and the Rockets. Los Angeles will be favored to win this game against the Spurs but it’s going to be tougher without 40 percent of the starting lineup. However, Lonzo Ball played well last time out and he should move in to the starting lineup for Rondo. The Lakers also have LeBron James still, of course, to Los Angeles seems to have a solid shot at winning this matchup in NBA wagering.

This NBA basketball game between the San Antonio Spurs and Los Angeles Lakers will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California at 10:30 p.m ET on Monday, October 22nd, 2018. The game will be nationally televised on NBA TV.

We'll have NBA basketball odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2018 NBA season.

                            Odds Analysis

There is no spread yet but the Lakers are expected to be the slight favorite. They are the home team and have the best player on the court. The Spurs were a perennial contender for years but the trade of Kawhi Leonard in the offseason puts into question this team’s ceiling. San Antonio is 1-1 on the year and would love to pull out this win.

This is a game with live betting opportunities, which allows for bettors to make wagers when the action is in progress. It is a great way to take advantage of any trends in the game.

                            Player to Watch

Lonzo Ball -- The former No. 2 overall pick was relegated to the bench by the signing of Rondo, but now he’s back in a prime spot. He played well last time out against the Rockets, finishing with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists. Ball shot well from the field, hitting 5-of-10 from the field, including 4-of-8 from three-point range.

Ball’s biggest issue is his outside shooting, so if he has improved and can hit out there regularly, it would be a big help.

                            Key Stat

28.0. -- That’s the number of points per game DeMar DeRozan has averaged in the first two games with his new team, the Spurs. DeRozan was acquired from the Raptors this offseason in exchange for Leonard. Even though San Antonio didn’t want to make the deal, it was a decent return considering Leonard wanted out.

DeRozan has added 6.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds per contest early on. He is shooting 48.8 percent from the field and 25 percent from three-point range. If the Spurs are to make a deep playoff run this year, they will need to be able to keep up with the high-scoring teams. They lack a bunch of playmakers so DeRozan will need to take a lead role.

This will be an important game for him against the Lakers as DeRozan aims to put up big numbers once again.

                            Free NBA ATS Picks

The Lakers have to deal with some adversity early on with the suspensions of Rondo and Ingram. It hurts the team’s talent as well as its depth. The Spurs are a solid team but the Lakers still have the home court and LeBron. Los Angeles will have some ups and downs early on but this is a game it should win even short-handed.

Keep an eye on the spread as this one could be a down-to-the-wire finish. The scoring total will be interesting. The Spurs are usually lower-scoring but have been in shootouts thus far, and the Lakers have been in high-scoring games as well in NBA live betting.

NBA ATS Pick: Los Angeles Lakers 109, San Antonio Spurs 105

NBA Games to Watch - Week 2

We are still in the very early stages of the new NBA season, but it has already become clear that there are going to be some changes this season. The Cleveland Cavaliers are, as expected winless without LeBron, although the same can be said for the Lakers, the team he moved to.

The Toronto Raptors look like the class of the East in the early going, while the Denver Nuggets are the surprise leaders at the top of the West after 3 games. All of this may well change in the coming months, but it sure has been fun to see the NBA back in business.

Let’s look ahead to the next few days to pick out the best games on the NBA schedule this week with all odds, picks and predictions sponsored by YouWager.eu.

Monday - San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Lakers

The Spurs are no longer the dominant team that they were over the past decade or so, but they are still a team that should be fighting for a playoff spot this season in the Western Conference. They are currently sitting at 1-1 in the early going and start this week with a trip to LA to face a Lakers team still looking for their first win in the LeBron James era. It was always asking too much for James to come in and turn this team around overnight, so fans are going to need to put a cap on their expectations until this team gels. I think the Lakers might still be winless at the end of this one.

Wednesday - Philadelphia 76ers at Milwaukee Bucks

While all the talk in the Eastern Conference has been about the Raptors and the Celtics, the 76ers and Bucks are a pair of teams with more than enough talent to do a little damage. The Bucks are 2-0 to start the season, while the 76ers have rebounded nicely after getting pounded by the Boston Celtics in their season opener. These two split their 4-game regular season series last year, with the home team coming away with the win in each of those games. If that trend holds, look for the Bucks to get the win.

Thursday - Boston Celtics at Oklahoma City Thunder

The Boston Celtics are among the favorites to win the Eastern Conference this season and they certainly made a big statement early on with a huge win over the Philadelphia 76ers. They split their next two games, though, and are now sitting at 2-1 on the season. Just before we hit the weekend, the Celtics will be on the road to face a Thunder team coming into this week with an 0-3 record. OKC were forced to start the season without the services of Russell Westbrook, but the big man is now back, so look for their fortunes to change. The Celtics won both meetings last season and I like them again here.

Friday - Los Angeles Clippers at Houston Rockets

It was a down year for the Clippers last season, but they have quickly shown that they are ready and willing to compete this year, going 2-1 to start the season, courtesy of back to back wins to close out the opening week of the season. Things have not gone as smoothly for the Rockets, as they are 1-2 and sitting below the playoff line. They had a chippy night versus the Lakers, with a minor scuffle leading to suspensions for some of the players involved. The Rockets will launch sooner than later, starting with a win here.

                                NBA investigating Lakers-Rockets
                                October 21, 2018
                                By The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) Lakers teammates Brandon Ingram and Rajon Rondo and Chris Paul of the Rockets were suspended without pay Sunday for an on-court fight, with Paul taking the heaviest financial hit.

Ingram was suspended four games, Rondo will sit out three games and Paul two games. The NBA handed down the punishments a day after the incident in the fourth quarter at Staples Center.

The penalty was costliest to Paul, who has the highest salary of the trio and was fined a total of $491,782. Paul is president of the NBA Players' Association. He began serving his suspension Sunday night and wasn't at the arena when the Rockets lost to the Clippers 115-112. Rondo will be docked a total of $186,207, while Ingram's total is $158,816.

Houston coach Mike D'Antoni disagreed with the severity of Paul's penalty.

''It's just not equitable,'' he said. ''If you wanted to suspend him one (game) I get it, just to make a statement. Then you're talking monetarily, he's paying three times more than the other guys are paying for missing games? That doesn't seem to be right.''

Ingram and Rondo will start their suspensions Monday night when the Lakers host the San Antonio Spurs.

The league said Ingram was suspended for aggressively escalating the altercation and throwing a punch in the direction of Paul, confronting referee Jason Phillips in a hostile manner, and instigating the overall incident by shoving Rockets guard James Harden.

''It is what it is,'' Harden said. ''I don't know how to decide how many games.''

Eric Gordon, who started in place of Paul against the Clippers, defended his teammate, saying, ''If somebody is attacking you, you got to somewhat protect yourself.''

Rondo was suspended for instigating a physical altercation with Paul, and spitting and throwing multiple punches at the Rockets star. Paul was suspended for poking at and making contact Rondo's face and throwing multiple punches at him.

''What is he supposed to do? Just stand there and get spit on and then take a punch in the face and say, `Well, that's OK,''' said D'Antoni, who called Rondo's spitting ''pretty disgusting.''

''In the heat of the moment when somebody does that, that's tough, that's really tough,'' D'Antoni said.

The Rockets led 109-108 with 4:13 remaining when Ingram fouled Harden and then shoved him and confronted Phillips after getting a technical foul.

Ingram, Paul and Rondo were all ejected. Houston won 124-115, spoiling the Lakers' home debut for LeBron James.

''We don't want this to happen again,'' said NBA executive vice president Kiki VanDeWeghe, who handed down the penalties. ''(We are) sending a clear message that this is not acceptable behavior and you cannot do this. So in this particular instance, the multiple-game suspensions are pretty severe both to their teams and financially to the players.''

The suspension to Ingram is the longest for an on-court incident since April 2012, when Metta World Peace of the Lakers received seven games. World Peace elbowed Harden, who was then playing for Oklahoma City, in a game also at Staples Center to earn that penalty, the irony being Harden is the one who Ingram fouled to start Saturday's fracas.

There have been longer suspensions in recent years, but none for an on-court altercation than what Ingram got.

''We have so few of these and we're very lucky in that regard,'' VanDeWeghe said. ''This game is played with a lot of passion and it's an aggressive game and obviously there is contact in the game. Our players play with a lot of respect for each other and for everybody else.''

With Paul and Rondo, that hasn't always the case.

They have a history of raising the ire of the other, going back to at least 2009 during a Boston-New Orleans game. Rondo was with the Celtics and Paul with the Hornets when players from both sides had to get between the two point guards as tempers seemed to flare after a game where they got tangled up in the second quarter.

VanDeWeghe clearly indicated that Rondo did not acknowledge spitting on Paul.

''Rajon has his own view of what happened,'' VanDeWeghe said. ''I think that we had a clear view that, however you want to interpret it, that there was a spitting in Chris Paul's direction. I think I'm going to leave it at that.''
