  • Mystics ease past Sparks 96-64 to reach semifinals

WASHINGTON (AP) Elena Delle Donne had 19 points and 12 rebounds to help the Washington Mystics rout the Los Angeles Sparks 96-64 on Thursday night in the second round of the WNBA playoffs.

Los Angeles and Minnesota - the past three WNBA champions - have both been eliminated from the postseason.

Washington (23-12) will open a best-of-five series against Atlanta on Sunday, aiming for its first WNBA Finals appearance.

LaToya Sanders and Ariel Atkins each scored 14 points for No. 3 seed Washington. The Mystics had 28 assists on 37 field goals, leading to six players in double-figure scoring.

Delle Donne made a baseline jumper to close a 15-2 run for a 21-13 lead and the Mystics extended it to 27-16 at the end of the first quarter. It was 50-29 at halftime and 75-46 entering the fourth.

It was a tough travel stretch for Los Angeles to end the year. The Sparks closed the regular season at Connecticut, hosted defending champion Minnesota two nights later and returned to the East Coast in a four-day stretch.

Candace Parker scored 16 points for Los Angeles (19-16). Nneka Ogwumike and Chelsea Gray - part of the Sparks' top-three scorers - combined for 0-of-9 shooting in the first half.

The game was played at George Washington University's Charles E. Smith Center because the Mystics' regular home, Capital One Arena, is undergoing renovations.

Griner, Taurasi help Mercury beat Sun 96-86
    By By DOUG FEINBERG

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) Diana Taurasi has made a career of playing her best on the biggest stage.

The Phoenix star improved to 13-0 in playoff deciding games, scoring 27 points in the Mercury's 96-86 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Thursday in the second round of the WNBA playoffs.

''If I had the answer I'd gladly tell you,'' Taurasi said. ''A lot of it is luck. A lot of it is having great teammates. You don't do it alone in this sport. We relish these moments where it's up to you if you want to keep playing.''

Brittney Griner also had 27 points, most in the second half, and keyed a 15-5 run to close the game with four points and a key block.

''(Dewanna Bonner) came to me in the locker room at halftime and told me to stop being passive,'' Griner said. ''It kind of hit me. I started being more aggressive. Encouraging me and getting on me to go a little harder.''

The Mercury will face Seattle in the conference semifinals, starting Sunday.

''Seattle is the No. 1 team in the league. Breanna Stewart has had a fantastic season,'' Phoenix coach Sandy Brondello said. ''They have a really strong five and good bench that can come in. We haven't played Seattle with the lineup we have. We know it's a five-game series. We'll focus on that first game.''

Stephanie Talbot hit a 3-pointer to tie it at 94 with 4:19 left. Griner then scored four points and had a key block on Courtney Williams to give the Mercury a 92-86 lead with 1:11 left.

The game was a rematch of last season's second round contest that the Mercury won 88-83. In that game the Mercury didn't have Bonner, who was out for the season while she gave birth to twins. On Thursday night she played nearly the entire game and finished with 23 points and 18 rebounds.

Courtney Williams led the Sun with 27 points, including a four-point play in the fourth quarter.

''To come up short against the same team again is frustrating for everybody,'' Williams said. ''We got to watch more film and get better and come back a stronger team.''

        Quote of the Day

“You’re not as bad as you think.”

        ***********************

Sunday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

        13) ESPN’s Sunday night game this week is New York-Baltimore, because ESPN is obsessed with New York and the Red Sox. There is no other way to explain it.

Putting the pathetic (37-93) Orioles on national TV in late August during the heat of the pennant race is gross stupidity. Meanwhile, Cardinals-Rockies is an important series in the NL Wild Card race, but no chance ESPN ever puts Colorado on national TV, and for that, they’re idiots.

        12) Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pirates 7-6 in 15 innings Friday night, in a strange game where the Brewers scored four times in the first inning, blew a 9th-inning lead, then scored three times to win the game after Pittsburgh grabbed a 6-4 lead in the 15th.

Milwaukee never scored from the 2nd to 14th inning; they were down 6-4 in the 15th, had two on and two out with pitcher Jordan Lyles, a career .123 hitter up- he drew a walk, and two hits later, the Brewers had an emotional win.

        11) Why did the Cubs trade for Daniel Murphy? Murphy has the best batting average of any regular player ever at Wrigley Field, over .400.

        10) One of my all-time favorite TV shows was Magnum, PI; for better or worse, I can still recite stuff from episodes I first saw 35 years ago.

CBS is re-making Magnum PI this fall; not sure how I feel about that.

        9) Detroit Lions tried a 62-yard FG just before the half in Tampa Friday; Adam Humphries caught the ball nine yards deep in the end zone and ran it back 109 yards for a TD, lot like the Alabama-Auburn game a few years ago.

Not a lot of real fast, athletic guys blocking for field goals, so Detroit’s tackling was suspect.

        8) Lions were down 27-6 in third quarter of this (meaningless) game, but rallied to win 33-30, scoring a TD with 0:30 left for the win, after an 80-yard punt return for a TD brought them back to within 30-26 with 4:53 left. Meaningless, but very entertaining.

        7) New Orleans Saints faked a punt in the first quarter of their game with the Chargers Saturday, then went for 2 points after their first TD. Thats what preseason games are for, to try stuff. In two weeks, everyone will get real conservative and we’ll know the regular season is here.

        6) I wouldn’t hate it if the NFL put in a rule that said any kickoff that went thru the uprights would be worth one point, kind of like a rouge in the CFL. Would make kickoffs more exciting.

        5) Pretty big change to basketball recruiting next spring/summer; there will be only two weekends of games (one in April, one in July) where college coaches can go to the games.

        4) Hall of Fame pitcher Bert Blyleven, who made his living with a great curveball, says kids shouldn’t throw a curve until they’re 13 or 14 years old.

        3) Happy 72nd birthday to the great Rollie Fingers, who saved 341 games during his Hall of Fame career. In his five busiest seasons, Fingers AVERAGED five outs an appearance, which means he would come in with one out in the 8th inning and finish the game.

        Anybody doing that these days?

        2) RIP to Senator John McCain, who passed away Saturday after a bout with brain cancer. He had a lot of what we need more of today; character, guts and the knowledge that even though we often disagree on things, we’re all Americans and our opinions need to be tolerated.

        RIP, sir.

        1) This tweet is from Steve Schmidt, who ran Sen McCain’s Presidential campaign in 2008:

“John McCain belongs to the ages. He perfectly loved this country and served it with valor, courage and integrity for 60 years. He was a patriot and a hero and America will never see a political leader like him again. He was the greatest man I’ve ever known. Godspeed John McCain”

        • Mystics-Dream matchup features playoff teams on a roll

Two of the hottest teams in the WNBA during the second half of the season -- the second-seeded Atlanta Dream and third-seeded Washington Mystics -- will square off in a best-of-five semifinal playoff series beginning Sunday afternoon in Atlanta.

Game 2 is set for Tuesday night in Atlanta. Games 3 and 4 (if necessary) are in Washington on Friday and Sept. 2. If the series goes five games, it will conclude Sept. 4 in Atlanta.

This series was in the making for the past month as both teams played lights out.

Atlanta was the best team in the WNBA during the second half of the season, going 15-2 in its final 17 games while forging a franchise-record eight-game winning streak.

That streak, however, was snapped by Washington as the Mystics closed out the regular season by capturing eight of their final nine games. Throw in Washington's second-round blowout win over Los Angeles and the Mystics enter the semifinals having just one loss in their last 10 games.

"It's going to be tough. Washington is a great offensive team," Atlanta guard Renee Montgomery said. "They have people who can go off for 30 on any given night. When you have explosive players like that, you really have to be on your toes."

Neither team has won an WNBA title. Atlanta has three finals appearances but has yet to win a game in the championship series, and Washington is the only active franchise in the WNBA that has never appeared in the finals.

The Dream eliminated the Mystics in the first round on their way to the finals in 2010 and 2013. Atlanta leads the all-time postseason series between the teams 4-1.

Atlanta also won this year's regular-season series, taking two of three from Washington.

All the games were played during a three-week stretch in July and with all-star guard Angel McCoughtry in the Atlanta lineup before her season-ending knee injury in early August.

The Dream closed out the regular-season by winning their final three games and holding on to the No. 2 seed, giving them a double-bye into the semifinals. They've been out of action since beating Las Vegas 93-78 last Sunday.

"Our consistency at the defensive end gave us chances to win games," Atlanta coach Nicki Collen said. "When we found our offensive flow, we truly became fun to watch."

The Mystics had to secure a playoff win to get to the semifinals, and they did so, rolling past Los Angeles 96-64 on Thursday in the single-elimination quarterfinals.

Washington had six players score in double figures - the entire starting lineup plus Tianna Hawkins off the bench - and set franchise records for points (96), assists (28) and margin of victory (32) in a playoff game.

"We know what we're supposed to do to play against them," Mystics coach Mike Thibault said of the Dream. "We played them twice late in the season, lost a close one and won (the other), and our team has a good feel for what we're up against.

"When you're on the road to start a series, you actually can put more pressure on the home team. They know if you come in and steal one of the first two games, let alone maybe both, the pressure has been put on them. That's kind of a nice position to be in right now for a team like ours."

          • Storylines abundant as Storm host Mercury in semifinals

There will be plenty of storylines when the Phoenix Mercury and Seattle Storm meet in the WNBA semifinals.

So many that the best-of-five series, which starts Sunday in Seattle, is fit for the finals.

There's Phoenix's Diana Taurasi, the league's career scoring leader, against Seattle's Sue Bird, the league's career assists leader. The two were teammates at UConn, overseas and with Team USA and are good friends.

There's Storm forward Breanna Stewart, the Associated Press Player of the Year, against two-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year Brittney Griner.

And Mercury forward DeWanna Bonner, who is averaging a league-high 29.0 points in the playoffs, against Seattle guard Jewell Loyd, who scored 29 in each of the Storm's two victories in Phoenix this season.

Finally, don't forget that Phoenix coach Sandy Brondello was an assistant under Storm coach Dan Hughes a decade ago in San Antonio, with Hughes giving Brondello her first head-coaching opportunity.

"The playoffs, especially where we're at now is all about matchups, and it's a grind because you're talking about a series as opposed to a one-and-done situation," Bird told The Seattle Times. "But there's no secrets in this league. The teams and players know each other pretty well."

            How well?

The teams met each other in their only two preseason games, then opened the regular season with a home-and-home series, each winning on the other's home court.

Seattle took the rubber game of the regular-season series 102-91 on July 31 in Phoenix.

"Seattle is the No. 1 team in the league. Breanna Stewart has had a fantastic season," Brondello told reporters. "They have a really strong five and good bench that can come in. We haven't played Seattle with the lineup we have. We know it's a five-game series. We'll focus on that first game."

While the top-seeded Storm (26-8) got a bye into the semifinals, the fifth-seeded Mercury (22-14) beat Dallas 101-83 at home in the opening round and then traveled to Connecticut, defeating the Sun 96-86 as the trio of Taurasi, Griner and Bonner combined for 77 points, a league playoff record.

"We've faced a lot of big challenges, played in what I think were playoff-type games to get us ready for this moment," Storm coach Dan Hughes told The Times. "What I'm anxious to see is us taking the things we've learned about ourselves and just moving forward.

"It's not as if anything necessarily changes. We continue doing the same things. We have a veteran group here and they know how to focus on what's important."

The WNBA playoffs field has been cut in half from eight to four and the semifinals will begin today.

In the first two rounds, the favorites have dominated the postseason with a 3-1 record and the lone outlier was Phoenix, who upset Connecticut in the second round on Sunday. Three of the four outcomes were decided by double digits and total bettors have watched the ‘over’ go 3-1 as well.

The Mercury will now face top overall seed Seattle as an underdog. The winner of that matchup will face Atlanta or Washington in the Finals and despite owning homecourt advantage, the oddsmakers have the Dream as underdogs to the Mystics in their latest future numbers.

                Seattle Storm 6/5

-- Considering 2017 was a down season for the franchise, the Dream didn’t get as much respect from the books early. They club was listed as an underdog 19 times and they posted an eye-opening 14-5 ATS mark.

-- Seattle has gone 0-2 in its last two trips to the postseason, losing each of its elimination games. Last season, the Storm dropped a 79-69 decision at Phoenix.

                      • Delle Donne, Mystics hold off Dream to win opener
                        By By GEORGE HENRY

ATLANTA (AP) The Washington Mystics decided to keep Elena Delle Donne in the post and see how the Atlanta Dream would adjust.

It worked so well that the Mystics might just stay with the same approach all series.

''My teammates have trust in me in those situations to attack and try to make the right read,'' Delle Donne said. ''I was flowing today, so they kind of just ran the offense through me. I just had to make reads or attack.''

Delle Donne had 32 points and 13 rebounds, Ariel Atkins added 15 points and the Mystics beat the Dream 87-84 in the first game of a best-of-five WNBA semifinal on Sunday.

The Mystics hit all 20 of their free-throw attempts.

Elizabeth Williams finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds for Atlanta, which never led. Alex Bentley's 3 pulled the Dream within three points midway through the fourth quarter, and Tiffany Hayes scored six straight points to make it a three-point game in the closing minute.

But Hayes missed an ensuing layup, and Jessica Breland couldn't hit a straightaway 3 on Atlanta's last possession before time expired.

''It wasn't pretty,'' Mystics guard Natasha Cloud said after scoring 13 points with a game-high six assists. ''It was an ugly game, but we came out with a win.''

Hayes, the Dream's season scoring leader, had 17 points but was mostly a non-factor until she was able to hit some layups in transition in the fourth quarter.

In a matchup of two of the league's hottest teams, Delle Donne was too much for Atlanta, using her size and agility to win matchups inside for layups, bank shots and forced turnovers.

She was at her best in the third after the Dream cut the lead to eight. Jessica Breland blocked her midrange jumper, but Delle Donne pulled the ball back, dribbled and pivoted to bank in a layup that made it 62-52.

''If someone else is flowing, we kind of run the offense through them,'' she said. ''That's the way our team is - unselfish, and it's why we're successful.''

The Dream had won 15 of 17, but it won't get any easier the rest of the way with Angel McCoughtry, their longtime star guard, out for the season with a knee injury sustained earlier this month.

Washington, which has won 10 of 11, got consecutive 3s by Atkins and Cloud to open the third and take its biggest lead at 15, but Atlanta stayed close and trailed by four when Monique Billings converted a three-point play in the closing seconds of the period.

Bentley's layup in the first minute of the fourth cut the lead to one, but Delle Donne answered with a layup. When Bentley hit a 3 that made it 74-71, Delle Donne followed a few minutes later with a 3 that put the Mystics up 81-71.

''I think Breland and Monique Billings did a good job on her one-on-one,'' Dream coach Nicki Collen said. ''I think what we've got to do a better job of taking the arc away from them on Tuesday night.''

                        FARTHER TO GO

Washington is trying to advance past the semifinals for the first time in its 21 seasons, but they're back for the second straight year after getting swept in 2017 by eventual champion Minnesota.

The Dream have ended three seasons in the finals but were swept each time.

                        LITTLE TOO LATE

Hayes banked in a fastbreak jumper and hit the ensuing free throw to pull Atlanta within three with 58.9 seconds to go, but her contributions were few in the first three quarters.

She was 6 for 15 from the field and hit just one of five attempts beyond the arc.

                        STAR TIME

Delle Donne, who finished third in the league's MVP voting, was 10 for 22 from the field, hit all 10 of her free-throw attempts and grabbed seven offensive boards.

SEATTLE (AP) On the day Breanna Stewart became the newly minted WNBA MVP, a key part of her supporting cast came through with a couple of big shots the Seattle Storm needed in the closing minutes.

Stewart scored 19 of her 28 points in the first half, Jewell Loyd added 23 - including Seattle's final seven points - and the Storm held on to beat the Phoenix Mercury 91-87 on Sunday in Game 1 of their WNBA semifinal series.

Stewart was the star for the first 20 minutes, but it was Loyd that hit the shots Seattle needed to hold off Phoenix's fourth-quarter rally.

''Anyone can score, anyone can get it going and tonight you had a glimpse of everyone stepping up and getting it going for us,'' Loyd said.

After posting the best record in the league during the regular season, Seattle got a week of rest before opening the semifinals at home. For the most part there was no rust from the long layoff, but Phoenix made the final minutes uncomfortable after cutting a 16-point deficit to two.

Loyd came up with a pair of clutch baskets, including a 15-footer with 1 minute left to beat the shot clock and pushed Seattle's lead to four. It came on a second-chance opportunity after Stewart chased down an offensive rebound that led to Loyd's key shot.

''We didn't stop. We didn't freeze when things got tight,'' Stewart said. ''Playing Phoenix you always know they're in the game no matter what, whether it's a two-point game or a 10-point game they have an opportunity to come back and win. We made some hustle plays that gave us multiple possessions.''

DeWanna Bonner led Phoenix with 27 points and 13 rebounds, and Diana Taurasi added 25 points. But the third of Phoenix's big three stars, Brittney Griner, was held to 13 points and battled foul trouble throughout.

Phoenix opened the playoff with a win at home over Dallas before traveling cross country to knock out Connecticut, and taking another cross country trip to Seattle to open the semifinals. If there was any fatigue, Phoenix didn't show it in the fourth quarter, outscoring Seattle 20-12 and making for a tense final minute.

''We just showed a lot of fight and poise, which we probably didn't see much of that throughout that game like we needed, starting with me,'' Taurasi said.

Natasha Howard added 20 points and Sue Bird had 10 points and 10 assists for Seattle. The Storm finished with 13 3-pointers, 10 in the first half.

Seattle led by 70-54 after Stewart's sixth 3-pointer midway through the third quarter, but Phoenix had a fourth-quarter surge waiting. Stewart scored on the low block with 4:57 left to push Seattle's lead back to 10. Phoenix responded with a 13-5 surge led by Taurasi. She followed up a deep 3-pointer with a pass to a cutting Bonner for a basket. Stewart missed twice near the basket on Seattle's next possession and Griner's second-chance basket with 1:40 remaining pulled the Mercury within 89-87.

Alysha Clark missed an open 3 for Seattle, but Stewart's offensive rebound led to Loyd's 15-footer that barely beat the shot clock to push Seattle's lead to four.

                          TIP-INS

Taurasi became the WNBA's all-time leader in playoff scoring, passing Tamika Catchings. Taurasi needed just eight points entering the game. ... Seattle improved to 11-0 this season when Loyd scores 20 or more points. ... Hall of Famer Bill Russell continued to make the rounds of Seattle basketball this summer sitting courtside for Game 1. A week ago, Russell showed up at the popular Seattle summer pro-am league run by NBA veteran Jamal Crawford. Russell visited the Phoenix locker room after the game and received a hug from Taurasi.

                          TURNOVER TROUBLE

Phoenix committed 16 turnovers Seattle was able to turn into 22 points. Phoenix had just eight and 10 turnovers in each of its first two playoff games.

                          AWARD SEASON

Along with Stewart becoming the second Seattle player to be named MVP, Howard was named the league's most improved player and Bird received the 2018 Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award. It's the third time in her career Bird has received the sportsmanship award. Howard received 29 of 39 first-place votes, becoming the first Seattle player to receive the most improved honor.

                              Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

                              13) There are two NFL handicapping contests at the Westgate in Las Vegas; in one you put up $1,500, pick five NFL games a week, and lot of people get prizes (30? 50?). First prize last year was right around $1M- they wound up with 2,748 entries, so $4,122,000 was in the pot.

This year, 1,768 people have signed up so far, with 13 days to go for more people to enter.

The second contest is winner-take-all, with a $5,000 entry fee. Last year, 94 people entered, so first prize was $470,000. This year, 64 people have entered, as of Saturday.

                              12) Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas also a contest, one where you pick seven games a week, but they can be college games, too. Entry fee is $1,000, and top 20 finishers get paid.

                              11) If you like to bet on sports, you should listen to SportsXradio, which is on 10-12 pm every weeknight here in the east. It is on radio station 720am in Las Vegas, or you can listen on sportsxradio.com. Shows are archived if you can’t listen to them live.

Why do I say this? They have a guy named Joe Lisi on Friday nights who knows a ton about college football- he pegged 17-point underdog Hawai’i as a SU winner at Colorado State. Host Ken Thomson is as sharp about sports as anyone in the country.

                              10) Nebraska will be starting a true freshman QB in Scott Frost’s first season coaching the Cornhuskers; Adrian Martinez was supposed to go to Tennessee, but when Butch Jones was told to take a hike, Martinez went elsewhere.

Martinez had an operation on his throwing shoulder and missed his senior year of high school ball; will be interesting to see him play next week.

                              9) Bad news for my A’s; Sean Manaea (shoulder) goes on the DL. All five members of the A’s starting rotation from the start of the season are now either hurt, or coming back from injury.

Oakland is 45-16 since June 16, but the Manaea injury is a problem.

                              8) Seattle Seahawks’ rookie punter Michael Dickson is getting rave reviews this summer; he has great hang time on his punts and stuck a couple of them inside the Minnesota 10-yard line in this weekend’s game. Dickson is an Australian who played college football at Texas.

                              7) Pirates’ pitcher Chris Archer wore neon green baseball shoes when he pitched in Milwaukee Sunday; kind of like Baylor’s basketball uniforms- very bright. Wonder if it distracted hitters at all.

                              6) They drew 3,000 fans in downtown Las Vegas for a Raiders watch party when the Silver and Black played in Green Bay last week; it’ll be fascinating to see how the Raiders’ move to the desert works out.

                              5) Toronto 1B Kendrys Morales has homered in seven straight games; the record is eight, held by many, including Dale Long, who wound up doing weekend sports on Channel 10 here in Albany.

                              4) Michigan Wolverines’ WR Tarik Black probably broke his foot Saturday at practice and is expected to miss an extended amount of time; he is an important part of their offense. Black also missed ten games last year with a foot injury.

                              3) Albany Great Danes’ basketball team has six international students; they have players from four different countries. No players from New York City, only 148 miles down the road.

                              2) Weird seeing Matt Holliday playing for Colorado again; when we started our fantasy baseball league (a keeper league) in 2005, the first three players I drafted were Holliday, Adam Dunn and Brandon Webb.

Holliday was totally awesome in ’07, knocked in 150 runs; in ’09, Colorado traded him to the A’s, who held on to him for half the season before dealing him to St Louis, in a horrific pair of trades that set the A’s back at least a couple years. Wish he had stayed in Colorado.

                              1) Odd thing: Holliday’s dad was at one time the baseball coach at Oklahoma State, but he got fired. When Holliday was on the A’s, Brett Anderson was his teammate; Anderson’s father was the guy who replaced Tom Holliday at OSU. Had to be at least a little awkward.

Then in 2012, when Frank Anderson left Oklahoma State, Holliday’s brother Josh replaced him, and remains the Cowboys’ baseball coach to this day.
