  • Mystics seek road sweep to open series with Dream
    The Associated Press

The Washington Mystics got what they wanted with their Game 1 victory over the Atlanta Dream on Sunday when they flipped the home-court advantage in their favor in the best-of-five WNBA semifinal series.

Now the Mystics are in the hunt for another road win as the two hottest teams in the league square off in Game 2 of the series on Tuesday in Atlanta.

Games 3 and 4 (if necessary) will be played Friday and Sunday in Washington, respectively. If the series goes five games, the deciding game will be back in Atlanta on Sept. 4.

Washington captured the opening game of the series 87-84 by riding the considerable coattails of All-Star forward Elena Delle Donne, who racked up 32 points and 13 rebounds. But it was ultimately the defense that produced the victory, especially in the final seconds when Atlanta had a chance to tie after trailing by nine points with less than two minutes to play.

On the final possession, the Dream worked to get the ball to guard Alex Bentley for a 3-pointer, but stingy defense by Mystics rookie guard Ariel Atkins forced Bentley to pass to post player Jessica Breland, who hadn't taken a 3-pointer this season, and she missed.

"Our team did a really good job of looking each other in the eye like, 'we need to get stops right now,' " Atkins said of the final possession. "We buckled down on defense, and it's something that we've grown to be able to do this season."

Atkins scored 15 points for Washington, Natasha Cloud added 13 and Tianna Hawkins had 11 off the bench. The Mystics got 76 of their 87 points from starters.

Bentley led the Dream with 19 points off the bench. Tiffany Hayes, Atlanta's erstwhile star forward, had a woeful shooting game in the first three quarters but surged at the end, scoring 11 of her team's final 13 points to finish with 17. Elizabeth Williams added 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Dream.

"My teammates stepped up real nice -- they kept us in the game," Hayes said. "In the fourth quarter, everything started falling, finally, for me. Next time, I have to start faster, and we can't give them as many 3s, because that was the biggest difference in the game."

That and free-throw shooting. The Mystics were 11 of 26 from behind the arc and 20 of 20 from the foul line.

"What we've got to do is do a better job taking the arc away from them," Dream coach Nicki Collen said after the loss. "We know that 35 percent of their shots are 3s, and we talked about making them go two-by-two-by-two.

"I'm not sure you won't see in some ways see a more energized team on Tuesday night as we battle back out of a hole."

The Dream, who forced more turnovers than any other team in the WNBA this season, lost the turnover battle with the Mystics in Game 1, forcing just four and committing eight.

It's hard to imagine Washington producing a better overall performance than it did in Game 1. The Mystics have now won 11 of their past 12 games, including two in the playoffs.

"You have the feeling that the series could look like this the whole way," Washington coach Mike Thibault said. "You have two highly intense defensive teams; the scoring was big early, but then it turned into a defensive battle down the stretch. We're going to need to shoot the ball better going forward."

    • Taurasi-led Mercury get another shot at Storm
      The Associated Press

Diana Taurasi has always been known for her competitive nature.

But that reputation might have worked against her Sunday as her Phoenix Mercury lost 91-87 in the opener of their best-of-5 WNBA semifinals series against the host Seattle Storm. Game 2 is Tuesday night at KeyArena.

After the buzzer sounded at the end of the first half, Taurasi marched toward referee Kurt Walker and was assessed a technical foul, her league-leading ninth of the season.

Seattle's Breanna Stewart, who before the game received the league's MVP award, began the second half by making the technical foul shot, sparking a 13-2 run that gave the Storm a 67-52 lead.

"I was going to go talk to my teammate and apparently they thought I was going to go and kill someone," Taurasi said. "They acted like I had a gun in my back pocket."

Taurasi, who had 25 points and passed Tamika Catchings as the league's all-time playoff scoring leader, helped the Mercury pull within two points with 1:40 remaining but they didn't score again.

"Those two minutes, that was like a track meet. We were our own worst enemy," Mercury coach Sandy Brondello said of the start of the second half. "You know, sometimes emotions get up. Some of the foul calls we just weren't happy about. But it is what it is.

"We have to try and stop the runs that Seattle does. That's the big thing for us. We did, but it took us a while. ... If we want to beat Seattle, we know we need to be better."

Taurasi, who committed six of Phoenix's 16 turnovers, agreed.

"That was a crucial moment in the game," Taurasi said of the Storm's run to start the second half. "It could have easily gotten away from us. This Seattle team is tough; they have so many weapons. They can separate at any minute. I think we showed a lot of fight and poise. We didn't see as much of that throughout the game as we would have liked, starting with me."

The Mercury will also need more from center Brittney Griner, who had only 13 points and four rebounds Sunday while battling foul trouble.

"I think Brittney played a little too fast," Brondello said. "This is something she can control. For some reason she was playing fast and even though a guard was coming, it just disrupted her."

Stewart scored a game-high 28 points for the Storm and Jewell Loyd added 23, including seven in the fourth quarter.

"We didn't stop. We didn't freeze when things got tight," Stewart said. "Playing Phoenix, you always know they're in the game no matter what, whether it's a two-point game or a 10-point game they have an opportunity to come back and win."

              • Dream beats Mystics 78-75, Delle Donne down with knee injury

                By By PAUL NEWBERRY

ATLANTA (AP) Elena Delle Donne was having another huge game, and the Washington Mystics were on the verge of taking command of this WNBA semifinal series.

Then, one of the league's biggest stars crumpled to the court with what looked like a serious knee injury.

Her teammates could hardly bear to look as she writhed in pain.

Just like that, the playoffs took a gut-wrenching turn.

Alex Bentley came off the bench to score 21 points and the Atlanta Dream evened the series at one game apiece with a 78-75 victory Tuesday night. But this contest will be remembered for what happened with just over 3 minutes remaining and the Mystics clinging to a 70-68 lead.

Delle Donne stumbled on a drive to the basket and collapsed to the court, clutching her left knee . The entire Mystics team raced to her side at the opposite end of the court, some turning away in dismay when they saw her anguish. She had to be helped to the locker room, unable to put any weight on her knee.

Washington coach Mike Thibault said he wasn't sure about the seriousness of the injury, but a pained expression at the postgame news conference revealed his concern.

''It's an emotional time,'' he said. ''We don't know what Elena's status is going to be. Obviously, she's a huge factor in what we do.''

Indeed, Delle Donne turned in a dominating performance: 27 points, 14 rebounds, six assists, two blocks and a steal, giving the Mystics a chance to take control of the best-of-five series with their second straight road win .

Instead, it's all tied up as the teams head to Washington for Game 3 on Friday night.

Delle Donne is hopeful she'll be able to play.

''I'm walking,'' she said in comments provided by Washington's media relations staff. ''The swelling isn't terrible, so I'll go home and see our doctors and see what they say.''

If it turns out to be serious, the series will be deprived of its two biggest stars. The Dream already was missing its longtime leader, Angel McCoughtry, who went down late in the season with a knee injury and cheered on her teammates from the bench.

Dream coach Nicki Collen is expecting Delle Donne to play unless she hears otherwise.

''I wouldn't count her out. She seemed to be walking around just fine after the game,'' Collen said.

                If Delle Donne can't return?

''It does change the game plan, of course,'' Collen replied. ''You'd be taking one of the best five players in the world out of the equation. But we'll prepare like she's going to play.''

After Delle Donne's injury, Washington struggled to create offensive chances down the stretch. A traveling call gave the ball to Atlanta, which went ahead for good, 76-74, on Elizabeth Williams layup off an inbounds pass. Ariel Atkins missed a 3-pointer, Washington turned it over again and Kristi Toliver's long 3 at the buzzer bounced off the rim, allowing the Dream to hold on.

Bentley provided a spark for the Dream, especially after Brittney Sykes went to the bench with four fouls early in the third quarter and the Mystics pushed out to a 10-point lead, the biggest for either team. Bentley hit 8 of 14 shots, one of them on a flailing drive that really got the small home crowd fired up.

                BENTLEY'S MIXED BAG

While certainly a big reason for Atlanta's victory, Bentley was kicking herself after the game for turning it over five times.

The Dream had 16 turnovers in all.

''Honestly, I was not happy with my decision-making down the stretch,'' she said. ''I definitely have to do a better job with my assist-to-turnover ratio and shot selection. But my team and my coaching staff put me in great positions to score and be aggressive.''

                TIP-INS

The Mystics trailed almost the entire opening half, finally claiming their first lead on Delle Donne's pull-up jumper with 2:54 left in the second quarter. Washington went to the break with a 36-34 lead. ... Tiffany Hayes scored 17 points for the Dream, while Williams and Jessica Breland added 10 apiece. ... Toliver finished with 16 points but went only 1 of 5 from 3-point range. The Mystics finished 6 of 20 beyond the arc. ... Delle Donne was basically a one-woman team on the boards for the Mystics, grabbing more than half of their 26 rebounds. The Dream finished with a commanding 44-26 rebounding edge, led by Breland (14) and Williams (11).

MAKE ROOM IN THE TROPHY CASE

Collen picked up another coach of the year award.

The WNBA recognized her as its top coach for 2018, adding to the honor she picked up last week from The Associated Press after leading the Dream to a franchise-record 23 wins during the regular season.

Collen wasn't the only member of Atlanta's leadership team to be honored Tuesday. First-year general manager Chris Sienko was selected as the WNBA's executive of the year.

Collen is the second Dream coach to receive the league's coach of the year award. Marynell Meadors claimed the honor in 2009.

                • Stewart, Bird Push Storm Past Mercury In OT, 91-87
                  The Associated Press

SEATTLE (AP) — Sue Bird scored 19 points, including the go-ahead basket with 1:03 left in overtime and two clinching free throws with 2.1 seconds left, to help the Seattle Storm recover from blowing a 17-point fourth quarter lead and beat the Phoenix Mercury 91-87 in the second game of the WNBA semifinals Tuesday night.

Seattle now has a 2-0 lead in the best-of-5 series, having won Sunday's first game by an identical score. Breanna Stewart led Seattle with 27 points, getting 14 of those in the third quarter to help the Storm build a 19-point advantage. But Phoenix, which was still down by 17 at 73-56 with six minutes left, went on a 23-6 run to end regulation, tying it on an incredible 3-pointer from the left corner by Diana Taurasi with 3.7 seconds left. It was her third trey in the final 1:36 of the fourth quarter. Taurasi finished with 28 points. Stewart had a chance at the game-winner for Seattle in regulation, but her turnaround shot from the right of the hoop bounced off the rim.

The Mercury went up 85-81 with 3:21 left in overtime, and was still up 87-85 as the clock ticked inside the two-minute mark. Jewell Loyd hit one of her two free throws with 1:31 left, cutting it to 87-86. Bird then drove for a lay-in and an 88-87 lead at the 1:03 mark. Phoenix had two shots before Alysha Clark secured the rebound for Seattle with 28 seconds left. Bird missed a lay-up try, but the Storm twice won jump balls in the final seconds and went to the line on both. Loyd hit one with 6.1 seconds left, then Bird drained her two at 2.1. Brittney Griner had a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out with 3:53 left in overtime.

                  DECISIVE FROM DOWNTOWN

During the regular season, the Storm and Mercury were two of the better-shooting teams from 3-point range. Until the fourth quarter on Tuesday, it had been all Settle from downtown, as the Storm was 7 of 16 from downtown, while Phoenix had missed all 14 of its attempts. But Phoenix then drained five in a row - three straight by Taurasi in the final 1:36 of regulation to help force overtime, then one by Bonner and one more by Taurasi in the first 1:39 to help provide an 85-81 lead. The Storm wound up at 7 of 19; the Mercury hit 5 of 19.

It’s been been an experience. It’s taken me a while to get used to it, but it’s fun to be put in environments with greatness.”

                      Monday’s quiz
Buck Showalter has managed four teams: Arizona, New York, Texas, Baltimore.

                      Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

                      13) If you care about such things, Minnesota’s Mike Zimmer is 43-21 against the spread as an NFL head coach. Hue Jackson is 17-30-1; he coached the Raiders for one year, before coaching Cleveland the last two seasons.

                      12) Someone at SouthPoint Casino in Las Vegas wagered $20,000 on the Houston Texans to win the AFC title at 10-1 odds; so if the Texans make the Super Bowl, that person banks $200,000.

                      11) Dodgers had their fantasy football draft this week; Clayton Kershaw took Lions’ QB Matthew Stafford in the 8th round. When Stafford was playing HS football in Texas, his center was….Clayton Kershaw.

                      10) If he hits all his incentives, Odell Beckham will make $19M a year from the Giants; there are 52 guys in the NBA making $19M a year. Seriously. 52.

                      9) Highest-paid major league managers:
$6M a year: Mike Scioscia, Joe Maddon, Bruce Bochy
$4M a year: Terry Francona, Buck Showalter

Showalter is the only one of those five guys who hasn’t won a World Series; he has a 9-14 career record in playoff games.

                      8) Lowest-paid major league managers:
$700,000 a year: Jim Riggleman, Mike Shildt, both interim managers (Shildt got the full-time job Tuesday, so he’ll be getting a big raise)
$800,000 a year: Alex Cora, Scott Servais, Brian Snitker

                      7) Chris Davis plays first base for Baltimore; he hit 47 homers in 2015, 38 in ’16, but is hitting .167 this year, with a .246 on-base %age.

Davis is making $23M a year, now thru 2023. To make matters worse, from 2023-37, he gets an additional $42M in deferred payments. Yikes.

                      6) Not only does Nebraska have a true freshman starting at QB this season, his two backups are walk-ons, one is another true freshman, the other a transfer from Scottsdale CC.

                      5) Feast or Famine: Washington Nationals have scored double digit runs in nine games this year; they’ve been shut out 13 times.

                      4) University of Albany’s freshman class has students from 23 different states and 21 countries. They have a basketball player from Fullerton, CA; if you live near Disneyland, why in the name of Jim Cantore are you spending four years in upstate New York?

                      3) St Louis Cardinals named interim manager Mike Shildt their full-time skipper; Cardinals are 26-12 since Shildt took over as manager on July 15.

                      2) Chicago Cubs are 14-1 at home in games where the winning run scored from the 7th inning on; they’re 11-10 on the road in games like that.

                      1) Dwayne Wade’s son will be a junior in high school this fall; he picked up his first scholarship offer last week; Nebraska offered him a full ride to play for the Cornhuskers.

                      • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

From Warren Buffett; the smartest people he knows:

                        1) Don’t get easily offended

                        2) Read more than they talk

                        3) Enjoy intelligent discourse

                        4) Quickly admit when they’re wrong

                        5) Comfortable changing their opinion

                        6) Surround themselves w/ intelligence

                        7) Seek to understand every perspective on a topic

                        **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

                        13) Darius Bazely was a top-10 basketball prospect in the 2018 high school class, but he decided to skip college and play in the G-League; now he has decided not to play in the G-League either and will use the year to train and prepare himself to be a pro. How?

I’m not sure who is advising this young man; disappearing for a year and not competing at all isn’t going to help him. Apparently “his group” as he calls it, isn’t happy because Bazely would be subject to the G-League draft and couldn’t choose where he wanted to play this season.

                        12) Why don’t the Philadelphia 76ers have a GM yet?

                        11) Manu Ginobili retired; he played 16 years in the NBA, all for the Spurs, scoring 14,043 points and winning four NBA titles. One of the NBA’s best-ever international players.

                        10) New Jersey Giants signed Odell Beckham to a 5-year, $90M contract; $41M of it is guaranteed, $65M of it guaranteed for injury.

                        9) South Carolina Gamecocks are fully replacing their football field less than a week before the season opener after hosting a Jay-Z/Beyonce concert last week.

Crews trucked in sod from Sugar Hill, GA after the old field had to be removed following the concert last week.

Carolina is home the next three Saturdays, against Coastal Carolina, then Georgia, Marshall.

                        8) Not only is true freshman JT Daniels the starting QB at USC, he is a kid who graduated high school a year early, so he is REALLY young. Daniels, the 2017 Gatorade National High School Player of the Year, went Mater Dei High School in LA.

But, in this age of “If I ain’t startin’, then I’ll be departin’”, they worked their butts off to recruit Daniels, and they want to keep him a Trojan. Plus, the three candidates Daniels beat out for the starting job are also all freshmen or sophomores- how many of them will transfer?

                        7) Rice 31, Prairie View 28— Huge sigh of relief from Houston after the Owls rallied from a 28-19 4th-quarter deficit to escape the horror of losing to a I-AA team.

                        6) Everyone seems to like Players’ Weekend in baseball; didn’t hear one bad word about it, other than sometimes the nicknames on the jerseys don’t always help identify who I’m watching.

I wouldn’t mind if MLB let the players wear whatever shoes they want, whenever.

Washington’s Adam Eaton had four hits Sunday using a red bat that was very colorful, he was told he couldn’t use it Monday, because Players’ Weekend was over. Oy.

                        5) Serious question: Do rookie head coaches in the NFL try harder in preseason games than experienced coaches? They have to get into the routine of what happens during a game, so maybe they gameplan more than guys who are just trying to pare their roster down and get ready for Opening Day.

I’m going to have to research that one for next summer.

                        4) Miami Marlins are averaging 10,054 fans per game, less than half what they said they averaged last year; rumor has it last year’s numbers were exaggerated to help sell the team.

Toronto’s attendance is down 10,442 fans per game; Detroit, Kansas City are both down over 6,000 fans a game. When your team has zero chance to make the playoffs, people don’t go to the games.

                        3) Atlanta Braves just finished stretch of 22 games in 20 days with a 13-9 record; teams are not allowed to play more than 20 days in a row- thats in the collective bargaining agreement.

                        2) The hurricane relief fund JJ Watt started in Houston last year wound up raising $41.6M; all of that money has been given out. Good for him.

                        1) I’m guessing this is a good time financially for people who sell metal detectors; with all the public shootings, metal detectors are going to be everywhere pretty soon.

                              1) A final word on betting college football, from Alex Kolodziej, betting writer for The Score:

“…….however, a warning: More teams mean more opportunities, and more opportunities mean increased betting volume. And I’ll be the first to say that when Week 1 of college football arrives and there are 40 more games to choose from than the opening week of the NFL, there will be a raging impulse to take every nugget from your Phil Steele magazine and apply them.

Do not listen to that impulse. Be selective. Or be broke.”
