Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

    13) Los Angeles Lakers signed Rajan Rondo, JaVale McGee, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Lance Stephenson this week; people are really excited about the Lakers again.

Oh yeah, Lebron James took $153.5M from LA to play for the next four years.

Golden State signed big man DeMarcus Cousins, who is coming off an achilles injury, and may not be ready to start the regular season.

    12) David Price has started twice against New York this season: he’s pitched total of 4.1 innings, faced 27 batters, 12 of whom scored. NY won the two games, 10-7, 11-1.

    11) Orioles went 6-20 in June; 6-5 against the National League, 0-15 vs AL teams. Oy.

    10) Toronto CF Kevin Pillar made one of the best catches ever over the weekend, robbing Nick Castellanos of a home run, climbing the CF wall— just a tremendous play.

    9) Big 14 vs Pac-12 in football last year: 5-2 SU, 7-0 vs spread; only losses were Nebraska (+13) losing 42-35 at Oregon, Rutgers (+28) losing at home to Washington, 30-14.

Since 2013, Big 14 teams are 22-10-1 vs spread when playing Pac-12 teams.

    8) James Franklin is the new starting QB for the Toronto Argonauts, replacing the injured Ricky Ray, who is probably done for the season.

    7) Celtics drafted Robert Williams from Texas A&M, who was said to have maturity issues. First, he overslept and missed his conference call with the Boston media. Then he missed his flight and didn’t get to the Celtics’ first summer league practice. No bueno.

    6) Cubs scored 10+ runs in four consecutive games for first time since they did it in five straight games…….in 1930.

    5) Julius Randle gets $18M for two years from the New Orleans Pelicans. NBA Summer League starts this week, with the Las Vegas Summer League starting Friday.

Seth Curry gets $2.75M for this season from the Trailblazers, with a player option for a second season in Portland.

    4) From Shane Bacon: “Ernie Els changes to a new golf ball after every birdie so he always carries 18 balls in his bag in case he birdies every hole.”

    3) Houston Astros signed 14 international free agents Monday, including eight players from the Dominican Republic, five from Venezuela and one from Cuba.

Some teams do way better than others with international signings; Astros are good at it. They employ tutors to help the new players with their English; has to be hard living in a new country, where you don’t know the language.

    2) I’m typing this at 7:40 pm; in his first 11 minutes as a pro in the Utah Summer League, Trae Young was 0-8 from the floor, 2-4 on foul line. His first two 3-pointers were air balls.

July has to be rude awakening for lot of these kids who leave college (too) early and now are competing against grown men, with millions of dollars at stake.

8:45: Young wound up going 4-20 from the floor, 1-11 on the arc, scoring 16 points in a 103-88 loss to Memphis.

    1) This, from pitching great Jim Kaat:

“Another big change in the strategy of today’s game evident in Nats/RedSox game..Cy Young award pitchers would never be asked to walk the #8 hitter in the 2nd inning..they would go after the #8 hitter so they’d have the pitcher leading. off. They’re Cy Young award winners!”

    • WNBA Betting Recap - 6/25-7/1
      July 2, 2018

League Betting Notes (Monday, June 25 through Sunday, July 1)

-- Favorites went 15-4 straight up (SU)
-- Favorites went 12-7 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home teams went 10-9 SU
-- Road teams went 12-7 ATS
      -- The 'over' went 12-7

      Team Betting Notes

-- It wasn't a very good week if you were backing Atlanta (8-8), as they were on the winning side just once in three road outings. However, they have managed to cover two in a row, and three of their past four outings, and the 'over' has hit in three consecutive contests, and five of the past six overall.

-- Chicago (6-10) has enjoyed a bit of a resurgence lately, rattling off three wins and covers in a row before losing the second end of a home-and-home with New York (5-11) over the weekend. The Sky has been the limit, as far as scoring is concerned. They are averaging 96.8 points per game (PPG) across the past four. They need to score, as they have yielded at least 88 points in 10 of their past 12, including five of the past six. As you'd expect, the 'over' is a perfect 5-0 over the their past five.

-- As far as the Liberty is concerned, their win against the Sky on Sunday snapped a five-game losing skid. They're still just 3-9 SU and 3-7 ATS across the past 10.

-- Connecticut (9-7) shot out to a 5-0 SU/4-1 ATS start, and 7-1 SU/5-3 ATS opening. However, they have been in a major tailspin since the middle of June, winning just twice in the past eight while also going 2-6 ATS during the span. The road has been especially unkind, as they're 2-6 SU and 1-7 ATS over the past eight away from home.

-- Dallas (7-8) has dropped two in a row at home, and they're just a hard team to figure. They haven't won or lost more than two games in a row this season. They have at least been decent against the number, going 5-2 ATS over the past seven. The 'over' is also 5-1 in the past six, and 8-3 across their past 11, so money can be made on the Wings.

-- Indiana (1-16) continues to find the wins hard to come by and now they're starting to fail to cover, too. As recently as June 22, they were 1-12 SU, but a respectable 7-6 ATS overall. However, they have failed to cover in a season-high four in a row and there are no signs of a turnaround. The 'over' has hit in three in a row for the Fever, as the defense has gone south, allowing 94.3 PPG.

-- Las Vegas (6-12) split a home-and-home with Los Angeles (12-5) over the weekend, and they have been a tough out lately. After a 1-7 SU/4-3-1 ATS start, the Aces are flying. They're a solid 5-5 SU/ATS across the past 10, and have a 4-2-1 ATS mark across their past seven away from the desert.

-- The Sparks exacted revenge on the Aces on Sunday in L.A., winning 87-71 to snap a season-high two-game skid and 0-3 ATS slide. They have rattled off six wins in a row at home since a loss to Seattle (12-5) on June 7.

-- Minnesota (10-6) got off to a very un-Lynx-like start, stumbling out of the chute for a 3-6 SU/1-8 ATS record through their first nine. They have been flawless since, winning seven in a row, while going a respectable 4-3 ATS. Defense has been key in their turnaround, as they allowed 76 or more points in eight of their first nine. They have given up 74 or fewer points in five of the past seven.

-- Another usual contender, Phoenix (13-5), started out slowly by their standards. They have righted the ship, winning 11 of their past 13 while going 10-3 ATS during the impressive span. Total bettors have found their defense to be appealing, as the 'under' is 8-4 across the past 12.

      • Storm surge toward top of standings could contine vs. Liberty

Based on what unfolded in the first half, the race to the top in Western Conference could a race to the finish.

Four teams are separated by two games and one of those teams is the Seattle Storm, who last won the Western Conference in 2010 when they went unbeaten en route to a WNBA title.

The Storm (12-5) are three wins from matching last season's win total and begin their second half by visiting the struggling New York Liberty on Tuesday night at the Westchester Civic Center in White Plains, N.Y.

Seattle is tied for second with the Los Angeles Sparks and a half-game behind the Phoenix Mercury. The Minnesota Lynx are two games back and on a seven-game winning streak heading into their home game against the Indiana Fever.

Of the four teams vying for the top spot, the Storm may face the toughest road, playing 11 of their remaining 17 games outside of Seattle, where they are 4-2. By comparison, the Mercury have played 11 road games already.

"I'm happy we're 12-5," Storm guard Sue Bird told the Seattle Times. "It's better than being 5-12 without a doubt, especially when we've had so many home games. But on the flip side, we're going to be on the road a lot and anything can happen on the road."

The Storm are 4-1 in their last five games after an 84-70 home win over the Connecticut Sun on Sunday night. Breanna Stewart, who is the league's top scorer at 21.9 points per game, was held to 11 points, but the Storm had enough.

Six players reached double figures as Natasha Howard scored 13 points. Bird added 11 points and nine assists, and the veteran point guard provided Sunday's highlight with a no-look pass over her head, resulting in a fast-break layup to Howard in the third quarter.

"That's a good day that you can get six in double figures, nobody plays 30 minutes and get 42 points in the paint, and defensively I thought we were solid," Seattle coach Dan Hughes said after his team allowed Connecticut to shoot 37.5 percent. "Now, off to New York."

New York would love to be 12-5 but instead will head into their final game of the first half with a disappointing 5-11 record. It is the Liberty's worst mark through 16 games since 2014 and their second worst 16-game start in team history.

The Liberty are 3-9 in their last 12 games but halted a five-game losing streak with a 97-94 overtime victory at Chicago on Sunday.

Tina Charles scored 28 points, including the go-ahead putback with 15.9 seconds left in overtime. She has scored at least 20 points in consecutive games for the first time since doing so in four straight games from May 29 to June 7.

After ending their longest streak since 2014, the Liberty are hoping to get it going at their relocated home court. Playing about 30 miles north of Madison Square Garden, the Liberty are 3-5 at the smaller venue and 3-6 at home overall.

"I'm just tired of losing," Charles told reporters last week after a double-digit loss to Phoenix. "You don't want to get used to it, definitely when you have a really good team."

The Liberty are hoping to reverse things as Epiphanny Prince gets more into the flow with increased playing time after missing most of the first month with a concussion. Though she was held to eight points Sunday, she played a season-high 30 minutes and produced back-to-back 21-point showings last week.

"We know we're a good ballclub," Prince told reporters last week. "None of us like to lose. At the same time, we're still optimistic we can turn this thing around."

New York is 12-4 in the last 16 regular-season meetings with Seattle since 2010.

        • Lynx could leave win-starved Fever quivering

The Indiana Fever's nightmare season doesn't figure to get any better when they travel to take on the WNBA's hottest team.

The Fever will be at the Target Center in Minneapolis on Tuesday to take on the Minnesota Lynx, winners of seven straight games after a curiously slow start to 2018.

Rookie forward Victoria Vivians, who scored a career-high 27 points in Indiana's latest setback, told the Indianapolis Star that her team is unified despite their frustrations.

"The best thing we can do is stick together," Vivians said after the Fever's 87-83 Sunday loss to Atlanta dropped Indiana to 1-16. "We depend on each other for everything. I feel like the best thing we can do is put our heads all in together and just be together through the whole process."

Against the Dream, the Fever rallied from 17 down but fell short despite Vivians' big night. She also had seven rebounds and three assists.

"She's kind of ice water like that," Indiana coach Pokey Chatman said of Vivians' calm exterior. "You can mistake it for 'she doesn't care,' and it's just that she's stoic."

The defending champion Lynx's slow start seems to be comfortably in the rearview mirror.

Minnesota (10-6), led by Maya Moore's 26 points, held off the Dallas Wings for a 76-72 road victory on Sunday to extend its win streak.

The win in Arlington, Texas, came on the heels of an 85-74 victory over Atlanta on Friday as Moore poured in 24 points.

"I think we're just all on the same page and making sure we're helping each other," Sylvia Fowles, who had 13 points and 15 rebounds, told the (St. Paul, Minn.) Pioneer Press.

Moore, who has scored 20 or more points in each of the Lynx's seven straight wins, was named Western Conference Player of the Week on Monday. She averaged 27.3 points per game during the streak and led Minnesota in scoring in each of the past six games.

Despite the streak and a 1-16 opponent, the Lynx will be wary of a trap game: Minnesota hosts its rival, the Los Angeles Sparks, on Thursday.

" ... Right now, this team is in a good place," Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve told the (Minneapolis) Star Tribune. "So that's not a big concern of mine because of the start we got off to this season. But there is no margin of error."

The Sparks handed the Lynx two of their six early season losses.

          • Sparks aiming for revenge vs. Sun

With their backs to the wall, the Los Angeles Sparks sent a message to the rest of the league on Sunday.

By defeating the Las Vegas Aces 87-71, Candace Parker and company showed that while they might have flaws, the Sparks remain a championship-caliber team.

The Sparks forced 21 turnovers and shot 73.5 percent in the first half as Los Angeles avenged Friday's loss.

The 12-5 Sparks get a chance to avenge another early-season loss when they play host to Connecticut on Tuesday at Staples Center.

In their five losses, the Sparks put up a couple of stinkers, having been blown out by 25 and 29 points. In their losses, they've been outscored by more than 17 points per loss.

But the Sparks have shown that when healthy, the only blowouts are coming with Los Angeles on the winning side.

Early in the season, Connecticut (9-7) was playing at a high level as the Sun won seven of their first eight games. Included in that streak was a 102-94 win over the Sparks.

Every Connecticut starter scored in double figures in that game, which saw Chiney Ogwumike finally get the best of her sister, Nneka. Chiney Ogwumike led the Sun with 18 points.

For the season, Chiney Ogwumike (15.2 points) leads five Sun players who average double figures. She's second on the team (behind Alyssa Thomas' 9.9 boards) at 8.0 rebounds per game.

But after that early success, came the condensed schedule and now the Sun have to be happy to turn the calendar to a new month having lost six of their past eight to close out June.

They're coming off an 84-70 loss to Seattle on Sunday.

"We're in the midseason point and we have a lot of different players playing big minutes for us and we're still trying to figure out the pieces to the puzzle," Chiney Ogwumike said. "Some days it's going to be easier, some days it's going to be harder, but nonetheless these challenges are going to make us better."

Two immediate challenges facing the Sun are stopping Parker and Nneka Ogwumike and not succumbing to the Sparks all-out pressure that often fuels the offense.

On Sunday, Nneka Ogwumike returned after missing three games. Los Angeles is now 12-2 when both Parker and Ogwumike play.

For one, Sparks coach Brian Agler was more than happy to have Ogwumike back in the lineup.

"Her energy and competitiveness really helps out," he said. "She's a great communicator. She'll communicate on the floor if she's playing and communicate when she's on the bench. Always really positive when it comes to Nneka."

As usual, Ogwumike deferred praise to her teammates and their defensive intensity.

"It starts with the ball," she said. "(Odyssey Sims, Riquna Williams, and Alana Beard) do a really great job of slowing the ball down to get us back on defense. I think we did a poor job of transition defense last game, so starting with the ball we were able to get our hands on a lot of deflections."

Los Angeles' defense will be tested by the league's highest scoring team. The Sun average 87.8 points per game. The Sparks are averaging nearly eight points less at 79.7.

The Sun also lead the league in rebounding at 37.3 per game while the Sparks are on the opposite end pulling down a league low 30.2 per game.

The schedule has not been kind to Connecticut, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

"We knew how difficult the road schedule was and we've played the least amount of home games in the league, but we're rewarded at the back end playing 11 of 15 (at home)," Sun head coach Curt Miller said. "We're 5-1 at home so if we can just stay above water, we knew it was back loaded so we have to keep grinding before we get home."

            • Cambage may miss Wings' meeting with Sky

The Dallas Wings host the Chicago Sky on Tuesday with the uncertainty of the playing status of star center Liz Cambage.

Cambage twice exited Sunday's 76-72 loss at home to the Minnesota Lynx.

She first left the game in the first quarter when Sylvia Fowles' hand accidentally struck her on the face. She later returned in the quarter to reach the 1,000-point mark in her career.

She took another hit late in the second quarter and suffered concussion-like symptoms. She did not return in the second half and is questionable to play against the Sky (6-10).

The Wings (7-8) still managed to rally from a 15-point deficit in the second half without Cambage. They took a 72-70 lead with 2:12 left on an Allisha Gray layup before Maya Moore scored the last six points for Minnesota.

They fell into the 15-point hole in the third quarter looking listless after halftime without Cambage. That's when Dallas coach Fred Williams called timeout and "let them have it," he said.

"Getting that energy, sometimes you have to snap that out of them, say a few words that you can't repeat publicly. It helps to wake people up," Williams said.

Dallas improved its defensive intensity while guard Skylar Diggins-Smith engineered the offensive execution with 16 points and seven assists.

Glory Johnson, who replaced Cambage in the second half, played respectably on defense and on the boards against Fowles, finishing with eight rebounds and three blocked shots.

"Glo definitely was a spark with Liz going down," Gray said. "Glo just came in and does what she does and was a big boost for us off the bench."

Chicago had its three-game winning streak snapped with a 97-94 overtime loss at home against the New York Liberty on Sunday.

The Sky have scored 90 points in four consecutive games. They had significant individual performances by Courtney Vandersloot (20 points, six rebounds and five assists), Allie Quigley (28 points including 5-of-10 shooting from 3-point range) and Stefanie Dolson (first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds).

Chicago had lost nine out of 10 games before winning three straight games.

"It's difficult," Sky coach Amber Stocks said after the loss to the Liberty. "We're all competitive, we're all here and focused on one thing, and that's winning games.

"It's difficult emotionally, these guys are out here busting it, laying it all out on the line -- emotionally, physically, and mentally."

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Natalie Achonwa had 17 points and nine rebounds to help the Indiana Fever beat the Minnesota Lynx 71-59 on Tuesday night.

The Fever (2-16) won their first regular-season game at the Target Center since 2011.

Achonwa shot 7 of 10 from the field and tied her career-high with three blocks. Rookie Victoria Vivians had 13 points - her fifth consecutive game scoring in double figures - and Cappie Pondexter added a season-high 12 points for Indiana.

Pondexter, who was signed by Indiana on Sunday, converted a 3-point play to spark an 8-0 run that gave the Fever a 59-51 lead when Achonwa hit a jumper with 5:53 to play. Maya Moore hit a 3-pointer about a minute later to pull the Lynx within four but Vivians answered with a deep 3 as the shot clock expired as Indiana scored 10 of the final 12 points.

Rebekkah Brunson, the only Minnesota player to score in double figures, had 13 points. The Lynx (10-7), who shot just 32.8 percent from the field, had their seven-game win streak snapped.

                        WINGS 108, SKY 85

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Liz Cambage scored a career-high 37 points and Skylar Diggins-Smith had 18 of her 20 points in the decisive third quarter to help the Wings beat the Sky.

It was the Wings' second-highest scoring output in franchise history.

Cambage shot 16 of 20 from the field and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Dallas (8-8) led 51-49 at the break before Cambage and Diggins-Smith combined for 28 of the Wings' 32 third-quarter points. Cambage scored six and Diggins-Smith added five during an 11-2 run to open the second half that gave Dallas a 62-51 lead. Diggins-Smith made a layup, hit a 3-pointer and then assisted on a layup by Cambage that made it 83-66 late in the third and Chicago trailed by at least nine the rest of the way.

Diamond DeShields, the third pick in the 2018 WNBA Draft, led the Sky (6-11) with 20 points, Allie Quigley scored 18 and Alaina Coates added a career-high 10 points. Coates, selected No. 2 overall in 2017, missed all of last season while recovering from ankle surgery.

Chicago's Jamierra Faulkner left the game with an injury late in the fourth quarter.

                        STORM 77, LIBERTY 62

NEW YORK (AP) - Breanna Stewart and Jewell Loyd scored 21 points apiece to help the Storm beat the Liberty.

Stewart made 9 of 12 from the field, grabbed eight rebounds and had three steals. Natasha Howard added 13 points and Sue Bird had 11 assists for Seattle. The Storm (13-5) moved into a tie with Phoenix atop the WNBA standings.

Stewart made back-to-back baskets to spark a 14-0 run that gave Seattle an 11-point lead when Bird hit two free throws with 32.1 seconds left in the first half. Epiphanny Prince answered with two foul shots, but Loyd's putback of an airball by Howard at the buzzer made it 39-28 at the break and the Liberty trailed by double figures the rest of the way.

Bria Hartley led New York with 16 points. The Liberty (5-12) have lost six of their last seven games.

The Storm had 25 assists on 30 field goals.
