  • Mystics look to keep rolling vs. slumping Liberty

WASHINGTON -- The Washington Mystics go for their fourth straight win when they host the New York Liberty on Thursday night.

The last time the teams met, the Mystics upset the Liberty in a single-elimination, second-round playoff matchup 82-68 in September and the teams have traveled in opposite directions this season.

Washington (9-5) sits atop the Eastern Conference while the Liberty (4-9) have lost three straight and are having problems finding the basket. New York has failed to hit the 70-point mark three times this season, including in their past two contests.

The Liberty nearly rallied back from an early deficit against the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday, trailing 30-16 after one quarter, but they could not complete the comeback, falling 83-69 at home. Tina Charles led the Liberty with 12 points and Bria Hartley and Shavonte Zellous added 11 each.

"We spotted them a good amount in the first quarter," New York coach Katie Smith said. "The third quarter we could not get any buckets. We had 11 points in the quarter. Scoring points right now is hard for us and we need to find a way to put points on the board."

With a layup in the first quarter, Charles scored the 5,014th point of her career, surpassing Taj McWilliams-Franklin to move into 18th on the WNBA all-time scoring list on a night she took just 12 shots and made four.

"She needs to touch the ball a little more and be a facilitator," Smith said. "At times, we feel the need to allow her to touch the basketball to suck the defense in. I will take her attacking the basket, going in there and getting fouled. We still have to play through her a good bit while still be aggressive at every other position."

The Mystics also fell behind by double digits in the first quarter Tuesday night, trailing the visiting Connecticut Sun by 10. Washington's stepped up its defense and defeated the Sun 92-80 to take over sole possession of first place and improve to 2-1 against Connecticut.

Washington trailed by three at halftime but went on a 16-point run midway through the third quarter.

"It's amazing when you play really good defense what kind of things can happen," Mystics coach Mike Thibault told the Washington Post.

Elena Delle Donne led all scorers with 25 points and LaToya Sanders had a career-high 18 points and eight rebounds.

"We're trying to be a championship team, so when we play other good teams, we can't just get blown out by 30 when we know we have the talent and 12 healthy players now to compete with anybody in this league," Sanders told the Post.

The Liberty have been victimized by the 3-pointer of late, allowing 20 makes from deep at a 51 percent clip over the past two games. That does not bode well against a Washington team that leads the WNBA in 3-point shooting percentage (36.6 percent).

    Sparks-Storm Preview

A Los Angeles-Seattle matchup would generally create some buzz around the WNBA.

Thursday night's game at Key Arena is no different, but for different reasons.

A headline Wednesday on WNBA.com read: "Sparks & Storm Quotes About ESPN The Magazine's BODY Issue."

Longtime Storm point guard Sue Bird is on the cover with girlfriend Megan Rapinoe, the U.S. national team soccer star. Seattle forward Breanna Stewart is featured inside.

"It's been great, I would say 99.9 percent positive," Bird told The Seattle Times. "There are some people -- mostly on Twitter, so I try not to read a lot of the comments -- who don't like naked bodies.

"But I don't view it that way at all. I think it's a celebration of people who are athletes who part of their job is to take care of themselves and lead a healthy lifestyle. And we all look different. It's a celebration of that. That's how I see it."

While Bird and Stewart have received positive reviews, Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike said she heard from several critics last year after appearing in the Body Issue.

"I got mixed reviews because I come from a very conservative culture being Nigerian," Ogwumike told WNBA.com. "I had a lot of conference calls with family members."

    As for Thursday's game ...

The last time the teams met June 7, the Storm won 88-63 for their first victory at Los Angeles since 2015.

That loss sparked Los Angeles, which won its next five games to move to the top of the WNBA standings.

That streak was snapped Friday, when the Sparks suffered another lopsided defeat -- 101-72 at Dallas.

The Sparks responded with an 87-73 home victory over Dallas on Tuesday night as Candace Parker scored 29 points.

The Sparks (11-3) hope Tuesday's win starts another positive run. The Sparks played Tuesday without Ogwumike, the 2016 league MVP, because of a back injury. Ogwumike is averaging 16.2 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.

"Nneka is irreplaceable," Parker said. "We just try to do the best we can by committee."

The Sparks also had to overcome coach Brian Agler's ejection early in the third quarter. Agler is in his 15th season as a head coach, including 2008-14 with the Storm.

"He was fighting for the team and felt that we weren't getting some of the calls that were obvious in our opinion," said Sparks assistant coach Bobbie Kelsey, who took over for the rest of the game. "That's what we're here for, to support the coach and what the team needs."

The Storm (10-5) are coming off a 91-79 loss Tuesday at defending WNBA champion Minnesota despite 27 points from Stewart, the league leader with 22.3 points per game.

Delle Donne's 3-pointer lifts Mystics over Liberty, 80-77
        June 28, 2018

WASHINGTON (AP) Elena Delle Donne hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Washington Mystics an 80-77 victory over the New York Liberty on Thursday night.

After LaToya Sanders hit two free throws to give Washington (10-5) a 77-75 lead with 17.1 seconds to play, Tina Charles banked in a short turn-around jumper to tie it about 10 seconds later. Kristi Toliver's 3-point attempt was blocked by Sugar Rodgers as time appeared to expire, but 0.6 seconds were put on the clock after video review, and Tierra Ruffin-Pratt found Delle Donne with the inbound pass for the winner.

Delle Donne led Washington with 22 points, Shatori Kimbrough-Walker had 12, and Toliver 10. The Mystics have won four in a row.

Epiphanny Prince led New York (4-10) with a season-high 21 points, including four 3-pointers. Charles finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists, and Kia Vaughn had 16 points. The Liberty have lost four straight.

            • Mercury continue season-long road trip in Indiana

The Phoenix Mercury are back on track after a two-game losing streak and will try to carry that momentum with them as they head into Friday's battle against the Indiana Fever at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis.

The Mercury (11-5) are in the midst of a season-long four-game road trip and a stretch of eight games away from home in a nine-game span. Phoenix ended its mini-skid on Tuesday with an 83-69 victory at New York that gave them nine wins in their past 11 outings.

Diana Taurasi scored 27 points in the win over the Liberty, making her first seven 3-point attempts, while DeWanna Bonner hit for 18 points and Sancho Lyttle and Brittney Griner scored 12 apiece for the Mercury.

Phoenix made 14 of 23 3-pointers in the game with Taurasi finishing 7 of 11 from beyond the arc.

"We had to get back to the things we do well, which is communication, and a lot of focus and intent -- when we play like that we are tough," Taurasi said. "We know what we have to do, and we understand the keys to us playing well. We are a veteran team."

Friday's game is the season's first meeting between the Fever and the Mercury. Indiana owns a 21-14 edge in the overall series between the two teams and an 11-7 advantage in games played in Indianapolis. The Fever have won five of the past eight meetings overall while Phoenix won two of the three contests last season.

Indiana heads home after losing its fourth straight game -- and its 14th in 15 outings -- in a 101-89 setback at Connecticut on Tuesday. The Sun beat the Fever for the second time in three nights and completed a three-game sweep of Indiana in 2018.

"We're not going to outscore a lot of people," Fever coach Pokey Chatman said after the loss. "But we need to have a little more pride in our effort, and we need to start with more intensity. We have to focus, and we have to fight. It's OK when you fight to come back, but we have to fight for 40 (minutes)."

Indiana's rookie duo of Victoria Vivians and Kelsey Mitchell provided 40 of the Fever's 89 points. Vivians poured in career highs of 25 points and five 3-pointers, and Mitchell added 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Candice Dupree pitched in 14 points for Indiana.

Vivians and Mitchell combined for eight 3-pointers, matching the most by any rookie duo in the WNBA since 2009, and equaling their own feat of June 16 versus Atlanta.

Dupree has reached double-figure scoring in 10 of the 13 games she's played this year, returning last week after a two-game bout nursing a sore left knee.

This will be the first time since they were married in fall 2016 that former teammates Dupree and Bonner square off against each other on opposing teams. It will also be the first time Bonner and her half-sister Erica McCall will take the floor together as professionals on opposing teams.

              • Liberty want to break losing cycle against Sky

After the New York Liberty suffered a 14-point loss to the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday, Tina Charles expressed concern about the dire state of things.

"Oh, I'm very concerned," Charles told reporters after an 83-69 loss to the Mercury. "Me being moody is just because of that, because I know that we're better than that. I'm just tired of losing."

While Charles is getting fed up, the Liberty keep losing. They'll attempt to break a four-game losing streak Friday night when they host the Chicago Sky at the Westchester Civic Center in White Plains, N.Y.

Charles scored 12 points Tuesday when the Liberty trailed by 13 in the opening minutes. On Thursday, some things were better such as Charles scoring 18 points while New York shot 50 percent from the field.

However, the result was an 80-77 loss in Washington when Elena Delle Donne beat the buzzer with a three-pointer, dropping the Liberty to 1-6 in their last seven games.

When Delle Donne's shot swished through, the Liberty dropped to 4-10, matching the worst start in team history. The Liberty also began 2006 and 2014 with 10 losses in 14 games.

If there is something positive about this it is that others helped Charles offensively. Epiphanny Prince led the Liberty with 21 points and Kia Vaughn added 16, but ultimately New York did not do enough and allowed at least 80 points for the 10th time this season.

Things are going better for Chicago. The Sky are 5-9 but have improved offensively in winning consecutive games for the second time this season.

Chicago averaged 72 points during a six-game losing streak but is averaging 95 in its last two games.

After halting the skid with a 97-88 home win over Phoenix on Sunday, Chicago followed it by shooting 49 percent in a 93-80 home win over the Atlanta Dream on Wednesday.

Rookie Diamond DeShields scored 23 points and has topped double digits eight times and reached 20 points three times.

"We've won two in a row after a tough loss," DeShields said. "I think it's a turning point for us as a unit as well. We've got some momentum moving into New York and we are confident in ourselves right now. We are playing really well, so yeah you could call it a turning point."

Besides DeShields, Allie Quigley also is rolling in the last three games. She scored 22 on Wednesday and has topped 20 points in the last games.

Perhaps more impressive than the offense was the defensive effort on Angel McCoughtry, who averages 17.6 points. The Sky held her scoreless in the first half and to six points overall on 1-of-11 shooting.

Chicago took the first meeting withthe Liberty 80-76 at home on May 20. While Charles scored 19 points for New York, the Sky made her go 8 of 20 from the floor.

Another difference from the first meeting was DeShields being held to seven points and New York playing without Prince and Vaughn because of injuries.

"We've already beat New York once and so to play them two more times, we have to make sure we secure tiebreakers -- against every team," Chicago coach and general manager Amber Stocks said. "Getting one more (win) if not two, a sweep against New York is vital."

                • Lynx go for sixth straight win vs. Dream

The Minnesota Lynx are finally playing like, well, the Minnesota Lynx.

Minnesota has put together a five-game win streak after a 3-6 start during which the Lynx looked nothing like that team that had won four WNBA titles since 2011.

Next up for the Lynx are the Atlanta Dream on Friday night at the Target Center in Minneapolis.

The Lynx (8-6) are coming off an 88-73 win over Las Vegas on Tuesday. Minnesota, during its streak, has beaten Phoenix to end the Mercury's run of eight wins in a row and handed the 10-4 Seattle Storm its only loss in the past five games.

"I knew how far we were from being ourselves and how it was so fixable," Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve told the Pioneer Press. "Did I know we were going to go on a five-game winning streak? No, (but) I knew we'd find our way. This group is too competitive to continue the way it was."

The Minnesota veterans have stepped up during the run.

Lynx stars Maya Moore and Sylvia Fowles, the league's reigning MVP, have silenced the voices of those who wondered if this team was too old.

Moore erupted for a season-high 32 points in Minnesota's 91-79 win over the Storm on Tuesday at Target Center. Fowles added 28 and 17 rebounds for her 11th double-double of 2018, tops in the league.

"It was one of those games where they were having problems as far as not having a lot of size, height-wise, and different players were guarding me throughout the game," Moore told the Pioneer Press. "(I was) just trying to stay active, trying to move and capitalize on any mistake the defense made or any moment of them not making it hard (to score)."

Atlanta (7-7) enters Friday's contest, the second of three straight road games for the Dream, off a 93-80 loss at Chicago despite 19 points from former Minnesota point guard Renee Montgomery.

This will be the second meeting this season between the two teams. The Dream ended a nine-game losing streak against Minnesota with a 76-74 win in Atlanta on May 29.

"They're so talented -- their starters," first-year Dream coach Nicki Collen told the Star Tribune after the win. "You've got to get to their bench, and then when they bring their starters back, you've got to get to their legs. If there was anything I kept preaching, even on every rebound, it was 'run, run!'"

The Dream might be a little road-weary.

Atlanta's matchup on Sunday with the Fever in Indiana will be its eighth road contest in 10 games. The Dream will have traveled more than 9,200 miles during that stretch.

                  • Aces' progress will be tested against Sparks

In back-to-back games, Dallas lost to Los Angeles on Tuesday and beat Las Vegas on Wednesday. The games mirrored each other, albeit with a different outcome.

The Sparks defeated the Wings 87-83 as Dallas collapsed late after holding an eight-point lead for much of the game. The next night, the Aces had a chance for the home win but were outscored 10-2 in the final minutes and lost 97-91.

On Friday, the Wings' two opponents clash on the Las Vegas Strip when the Aces play host to the Sparks, the team with WNBA's best record. The Sparks (11-4) are coming off an 81-72 loss in Seattle on Thursday despite 27 points from Candace Parker.

The Sparks sit atop the standings, and the Aces (5-11) have shown tremendous improvement since last season, when they won only eight games as the San Antonio Stars.

The main reason things are looking up for the Aces is No. 1 overall draft pick A'ja Wilson, who has acclimated easily to the pro game. Wilson is averaging 20.2 points per game -- third best in the league -- and 8.9 rebounds.

Wilson has found a running mate in veteran Kayla McBride, who is averaging 18.7 points per game after scoring a career-high 38 points in the loss to the Wings. Wilson had 22 points and 15 boards in the game, but it's the little things that are costing the Aces.

"We played hard enough to win," coach Bill Laimbeer told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "I think we're a little frustrated by the fact that we can't get over the hump. But at the same time, it's our fault because we're doing the little things wrong.

"We're not making the right plays at the right times."

And against a blueblood like Los Angeles, that spells trouble for the Aces. Just ask the Wings, who couldn't close out the Sparks earlier in the week even though Los Angeles' Nneka Ogwumike sat out and coach Brian Agler got tossed after picking up his second technical.

Parker, back all the way from offseason back injury, led the comeback on the offensive end. Parker compiled a season-high 29 points to go along with seven assists and five rebounds against Dallas. Chelsea Gray poured in a season-high 23 points.

The performances by Parker and Gray did not go unnoticed.

"They just took over offensively," Sparks center Jantel Lavender, who got the start in place of Ogwumike, said. "Most people have a really hard time dealing with them, especially when Candace is being aggressive in the tunnel. I think that she knew that she had to step up."

Parker heaped praise on Gray, whose turnaround jumper in the lane put the Sparks up 84-81 late.

"Chelsea's a great closer. We ... trust her to make the best decision, and she came off and hit that little medium-range jump shot that's hard to contest," Parker said. "She's done that for us a number of times."

But defense is what made the difference, and continues to keep the Sparks as an elite team.

Los Angeles forced three turnovers to start the fourth quarter. The Sparks forced a total of 17 for the game.

In addition, Los Angeles held the Wings to under 40 percent shooting from the field.

The Sparks and Aces are on opposite ends when it comes to defense as Los Angeles is the stingiest team, allowing only 75.5 points per game. The Aces allow 85.8 points per game, second worst in the league.

Surprisingly, the teams are nearly tied in defensive field-goal percentage with the Sparks allowing opponents to shoot 43.7 percent and the Aces allowing 43.8 percent shooting.

Lavender might start again Friday, because Ogwumike's status for the game is uncertain with a back injury that kept her out of Thursday's loss.

The two teams won't have to wait long for a rematch. The Aces travel to Los Angeles for a Sunday afternoon game at Staples Center.

                            Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind……

                            13) Jimmy Garoppolo’s salary cap hit this season is $37M, highest in NFL; next-highest cap hit is Lions’ QB Matthew Stafford, at $26.5M. Tom Brady’s? $22M.

                            12) Dak Prescott’s cap hit is the lowest among QB’s, at $725,848.

                            11) Back in 1985, the highest-paid baseball player was Mike Schmidt ($2,130,000); these days, the Red Sox have a utility guy named Brock Holt who makes $2,225,000.

                            10) Boston acquired OF/DH Steve Pearce from the Blue Jays, giving Toronto a Class A shortstop in exchange. Pearce is 5-15 with two HR’s vs Masahiro Tanaka, 8-27 vs CC Sabathia.

He batted cleanup in his Boston debut and went 2-3 with a double.

                            9) Nolan Arenado has homered 10 times in the first inning this year, most in MLB.

                            8) From 2013-15, Michigan State’s football team was +46 in turnovers; they went 36-5 in those three years.

Last two years, Spartans are -2 in turnovers, going 13-12.

                            7) Maryland Terrapins have an offensive line with 105 returning starts, so they’ll have a lot of experience, but the Terps are on their fourth OL coach in four years. Kids have heard a lot of different voices in their careers.

                            6) Marlins 8, Mets 2— Miami is 27-29 when JT Realmuto starts, 6-21 when he does not.

                            5) Bryce Harper is a free agent after the season; coming into Friday’s game, he is batting .188 in June, with 6 RBI in 95 PA. He is hitting .220 for the season, after hitting .319 LY. Unless he has a big second half of the season, it is going to be an interesting (and expensive??) winter for Harper and his agent.

Harper homered in the Nationals’ rout of Philly Friday night, knocking in three runs.

                            4) Tim Tebow made it to the AA Eastern League All-Star Game; 30-year old Tebow is batting .261 with five homers, 30 RBI. Not a lot of 30-year olds in the Eastern League.

                            3) Las Vegas Summer League starts next Friday; Miami Heat’s team might have a small home court edge, with three former UNLV Rebels on their roster. Derrick Jones Jr, Ike Nwamu and Rashad Vaughn will all suit up for the Heat next month.

Indiana Pacers have three UCLA guys on their team; Bryce Alford, Aaron Holiday and PJ Leaf.

                            2) Arizona Diamondbacks went 18-7 in April, 8-19 in May and are 19-7 in June.

stats.com points out that Arizona joins the 1893 Pirates, 1956 White Sox as the only teams ever to go 10+ games over .500, 10+ games under .500 and 10+ games over .500 in three straight months.

                            1) All this stuff going on with Justice Kennedy, his son the banker and the current state of affairs in Washington DC, probably has people who write movie scripts relaxing in their offices, sipping cool drinks while taking notes off of CNN, with their feet up on their desks. These movies and their sequels will write themselves.
