NCAAB Game of the Day: Duke at North Carolina betting preview and odds
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No. 8 Duke Blue Devils at No. 22 North Carolina Tar Heels (+1.5, 166)

Eighth-ranked Duke and host North Carolina are both searching for answers after some recent uneven play as they meet for the 246th time Thursday night in another ACC showdown. Duke dropped two of its last three, including a shocking 81-77 defeat at St. John’s last Saturday, while the 22nd-ranked Tar Heels ended a three-game losing streak Saturday by beating last-place Pittsburgh.

The Blue Devils averaged 15.3 turnovers over the last three contests and have struggled defensively much of the season while allowing 72.4 points per game (ninth in the ACC). “Those are the two areas that we have to get better at,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski told reporters. “And if we’re not, then we’re just going to be a good team. … I don’t think it’s really complicated. That doesn’t mean it’s easy to do.” North Carolina had suffered through a three-game losing streak for the first time in four years with losses to Virginia Tech, North Carolina State and Clemson, but shot 51.4 percent from the field in the convincing win over Pitt. “We had three great spurts where people were diving on the floor and doing those kind of things,” Tar Heels coach Roy Williams told reporters, “and that was sensational.”

            • Tobacco Road warriors: Visitors the best bet when Duke meets North Carolina
              Jason Logan

Cameron Indoor Stadium and Dean E. Smith Center are two of the most hallowed and notorious home courts in college basketball. Oddsmakers take extra care when setting the spreads for the host teams in Durham and Chapel Hill, giving them a bit more respect than the standard 3-point home-court edge.

But when it comes to Duke versus North Carolina, head-to-head, those home courts don’t mean squat. Going back to the 1997-98 college hoops schedule, home teams in the Tobacco Road Rivalry are just 12-25-1 ATS (19-19 SU), with the visitor covering 67.5 percent of the time.

No. 8 Duke visits Tobacco Road rival No. 22 North Carolina in Chapel Hill Thursday, with the opening spread set as a pick’em. The Blue Devils are 5-1-1 ATS in their last seven trips to the Dean E. Smith Center, and pushed as 7-point road pups last season.

If you're in the market for a online sportsbook, check out in-depth reviews of the best books and sign-up bonuses at OddsShark.com.

The underdog, most often the road team, in this long-standing ACC war has been the smart play whenever Duke and UNC collide. In their previous 45 meetings, the team getting the points is 25-19-1 ATS (12-33 SU) – covering at a 56.8 percent clip – and when those spreads reach six points or higher, the underdog improves to 15-8-1 ATS (4-20 SU), a 65 percent ATS winner.

That tally includes seven meetings in the ACC tournament. When you trim those postseason clashes (neutral sites) from the record and just look at meetings inside Cameron and the Smith Center, Tobacco Road pups of +6 or bigger are 13-4 ATS – cashing in at an impressive 76 percent rate.

While the pointspread favorite has ended up winning 33 of those previous 45 meetings between Duke and UNC, its margin of victory is just more than a single point, with faves outscoring dogs by an average score of 78.59-77.53 per game.

As for betting Tobacco Road totals, the Over and Under have paid out fairly evenly since 1997-98. In their previous 45 matchups, Duke and North Carolina have produced a 21-22-2 O/U count. Duke, which ranks No. 1 is scoring (89.6 ppg) has played Over the total in 15 of 21 games this season. North Carolina is scoring 82.8 points per contest and owns a 14-9 Over/Under mark.

UNC-Duke betting total for Thursday's meeting among highest in rivalry history
              Ashton Grewal

A Las Vegas oddsmaker predicted the Over/Under betting line for Thursday’s matchup between North Carolina and Duke would be as high as 171 while another shop guessed it would open at 161.5. The number opened at 166 offshore overnight Wednesday.

If the total climbs as high as 171 it would be the highest total for any Tobacco Road rivalry game and if it sticks to 166 it’ll be the third highest according to the database which goes back as far as the 1997-98. The average total is 155 and the average points scored per game is 154 in the last 47 meetings between the two ACC rivals. The Over/Under record is 22-23-1 over that same 20-year period.

The Duke Blue Devils lead the country in scoring at 89.6 points per game and they give up 72.4 points per game. Duke’s scoring average is the highest in college basketball since the 2008-2009 campaign. The Blue Devils are one of the best Over teams in the country with the Under cashing in just six of their 21 lined games this season.

Freshman phenom Marvin Bagley III, who’s averaging better than 21 points per game and shooting almost 60 percent from the field, is the centerpiece of the Duke offense. The high-low game the Blue Devils play with Bagley and frontcourt partner Wendell Carter Jr. will be difficult to stop for UNC. Bagley and Carter’s length makes the Tar Heels’ forward line look undersized.

The North Carolina Tar Heels’ offensive philosophy under Roy Williams is to run, run and then run some more. They’ve averaging better than 80 points per game for the ninth time in 15 years since Williams returned to Chapel Hill.

Will Williams rethink the Tar Heels’ approach going against an offensive juggernaut like Duke or will he double down and instruct his players to increase the pace and make the Blue Devil big men run until their legs fail?

North Carolina is the defending national champion but the team doesn’t possess the same type of dominant big man like it had with Kennedy Meeks. Starting pivot Luke Maye can mix it up in the paint but can also stretch the floor with his shooting out to the arc. Two years ago, 61 percent of the Heels’ points were coming off 2-points. This season that number has dropped to 52.8 percent.

Center Garrison Brooks was removed from the starting lineup early in ACC play and replaced with wing Cameron Johnson. Williams could revert back to Brooks to deal with Duke’s interior length and keep Bagley and Carter off the offensive glass.

The game tips off at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN and the Over is 5-2-1 in the last eight meetings between the two sides.

                **Duke at North Carolina**

-- College basketball’s premier rivalry will be renewed tonight when North Carolina takes on Duke at the Dean Dome in Chapel Hill on ESPN at 8:00 p.m. Eastern. These schools are separated by eight miles and according to a report from ESPN last night, only two points (in Duke’s favor) separate these teams in the last 100 meetings, This ESPN feature also noted how since a 1977 encounter that started this 100-game stretch, these schools have beaten each other 50 times apiece. They have had 18 games decided by one possession, with Duke prevailing 10 times. Since 1981, both schools have had 57 players drafted (for 114 total). From Jeff Capel’s half-court shot at the buzzer to force a multiple-overtime game at Cameron Indoor Stadium, to the elbow to Tyler Hansbrough’s face that broke ‘Psycho T’s’ nose and nearly instigated a melee and to Austin Rivers’s unforgettable buzzer-beating 3-ball to win in Chapel Hill, this rivalry always demonstrates the passion, intensity and vitriol you love to see in sports. Rarely are fans left disappointed after watching these enemies compete against each other.

-- As of early this morning, most books had Duke (19-4 straight up, 13-8 against the spread) installed as a 1.5-point favorite with a total of 166.

-- Duke owns a 4-3 record both SU and ATS in seven road assignments. Mike Krzyzewski’s club took its first ACC loss of the season at N.C. State on Jan. 6, only to respond with five consecutive wins. Since then, however, the Blue Devils have dropped two of their past three games, including Saturday’s 81-77 loss to St. John’s at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

-- The loss to the Johnnies came as 10.5-point favorites. Chris Mullin’s squad had lost its first 11 Big East games before shocking Duke. Then on Wednesday night in Philadelphia, St. John’s pulled another stunner by beating top-ranked Villanova. This unexpected development makes Duke’s loss look a little better. The Blue Devils led the Red Storm 39-32 at intermission, only to get outscored 49-38 in the final 20 minutes. Gary Trent Jr. scored 22 points in the losing effort thanks to five 3-pointers on seven attempts. Marvin Bagley III finished with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Wendell Carter Jr. had 14 points, 15 boards and four blocked shots. Grayson Allen, the storied program’s senior leader, played all 40 minutes but scored just seven points and had more turnovers (three) than assists (two).

-- Duke is ranked ninth in the latest Associated Press Top 25 and No. 7 in the RPI. The Blue Devils have posted a 5-1 record against the RPI Top 50 and an 8-4 mark versus the Top 100. They have neutral-court wins over Michigan State, Texas and Florida, in addition to home wins over FSU, South Dakota and Notre Dame. The only road win of substance for Duke is an 83-75 victory at Miami on Jan. 15.

-- Allen has been held to single-digit scoring totals in five of Duke’s last nine games. For the season, he is averaging 14.5 points, 4.4 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game.

-- Bagley, the freshman center, is leading the ACC in scoring (21.4 PPG) and rebounding (11.2 RPG). The future lottery pick is fifth in the conference in field-goal percentage (59.9%). Carter (14.4 PPG, 9.6 RPG) is averaging team-bests in FG percentage (61.3%) and blocks (2.1 BPG), while Trent is scoring at a 15.0 PPG clip and hitting 3’s at a 44.8 percent rate. Trevon Duval (11.3 PPG) has dished out a team-high 6.0 assists per game.

-- North Carolina (17-7 SU, 12-10 ATS) has produced a 10-2 SU record and an 8-3 ATS ledger in 12 home games. UNC lost at home to N.C. State by a 95-91 count in overtime on Jan. 27 as a 12.5-point ‘chalk.’ The Tar Heels also lost in Chapel Hill to Wofford (79-75) when they were laying 25 points on Dec. 20. This is their first game as home underdogs this season, assuming the line holds until tip.

-- Roy Williams’s team snapped a three-game losing streak both SU and ATS in Saturday’s 96-65 win over cellar-dwelling Pittsburgh as a 23.5-point home ‘chalk.’ Luke Maye was the catalyst with a game-high 26 points, burying 9-of-15 field-goal attempts and 3-of-5 launches from 3-point land. The junior forward pulled down eight rebounds, made three steals and handed out five assists compared to just one turnover. Kenny Williams also hit 3-of-5 from downtown in a 15-point effort, while Cameron Johnson finished with 14 points, two steals and four assists without a turnover. Joel Berry contributed 12 points on 4-of-8 attempts from long distance. The senior point guard also had six rebounds and six assists without a turnover.
                >
-- Maye paces UNC in scoring (18.3 PPG), rebounding (10.3 RPG), FG percentage (51.6%) and blocked shots (1.2 BPG). Berry is scoring at a 17.3 PPG clip, but he’s only making 38.9 percent of his FGAs. Johnson (12.8 PPG) and Williams (11.1 PPG) are also averaging in double figures.

-- North Carolina is No. 21 in this week’s AP poll and No. 12 in the RPI. Williams’s bunch has a 5-4 record against the RPI Top 50 and an 8-6 ledger versus the Top 100. The Tar Heels have neutral-court triumphs over Arkansas and Ohio State, in addition to road wins at Tennessee, at Stanford, at Notre Dame and at Davidson. Finally, they have beaten Michigan, Clemson and Boston College at home.

-- The ‘over’ is 14-9 overall for UNC after cashing in each of its past three games and five its last six. The ‘over’ is an incredible 10-1 in the Tar Heels’ 11 lined home contests.

-- The ‘over’ is 15-6 overall for Duke, 5-2 in its road contests.

-- The ‘over’ is 5-2-1 in the past eight head-to-head meetings between these schools. The road team has compiled a 19-7-1 spread record in the past 27 UNC-Duke showdowns.

-- These bitter adversaries have split the last four encounters, but Duke won two of three meetings last year while going 2-0-1 ATS. Both teams held serve with each other on their home courts last season, but the Blue Devils won 93-83 as four-point ‘dogs at the ACC Tournament. Allen scored 18 points, nailing 5-of-6 treys, in the victory at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

                **UCLA at Arizona**

-- As of early this morning, most spots had Arizona (19-5 SU, 8-14-2 ATS) installed as a nine-point ‘chalk’ with a total of 158.

-- Arizona is alone atop the Pac-12 standings with its 9-2 record in conference action. The Bruins are in a fourth-place tie with their 7-4 mark in league play.

-- Sean Miller’s team is unbeaten at home in 12 games, but it has limped to a 3-7 spread record. UA is mired in an abysmal 0-5-1 ATS slide in its past six home outings.

-- Arizona saw its seven-game winning streak snapped in this past Saturday’s 78-75 loss at Washington as a seven-point road favorite. The 153 combined points jumped ‘over’ the 146-point tally. After trailing the entire game, the Wildcats took their first lead around the five-minute mark and held a three-point edge with less than two minutes remaining. However, the Huskies finished the game on an 8-2 run to close out the upset victory.

-- In the loss at UW, Dusan Ristic scored team-high 21 points and snagged 10 rebounds for Arizona. Allonzo Trier added 20 points and three assists without a turnover, while DeAndre Ayton finished with 19 points, 12 boards and three rejections.

-- Arizona is ranked 13th in the AP poll this week and 14th in the RPI. UA is 3-2 versus the RPI Top 50 and 8-5 against the Top 100. The Wildcats have home wins over the likes of Alabama, Arizona State, UConn, Oregon, Colorado and Utah, in addition to a neutral-court victory over Texas A&M. They own road scalps at Utah and at Stanford.

-- Trier (19.9 PPG) is a helluva shooter, as evidenced by his 53.8, 41.4 and 85.4 percentages on attempts from the field, 3-point land and the charity stripe, respectively. Ayton (19.7 PPG, 10.8 RPG) averages a double-double while making 62.8 percent of his FGAs and producing a team-best 44 blocked shots.

-- UCLA (16-7 SU, 11-12 ATS) has lost outright in four of five road assignments, going 2-3 versus the number. The Bruins are 3-3 ATS with a pair of outright wins in six games as underdogs. They’re in just their third spot as road ‘dogs, posting a 1-1 spread record in the two previous instances. UCLA covered as a 4.5-point ‘dog in a 94-91 loss at Oregon and took a gut-wrenching 78-69 overtime loss at Michigan when its backers were left with a major Bad Beat catching seven points. The game in Ann Arbor as a seven-point puppy is UCLA’s richest prior spot as a ‘dog.

-- Steve Alford’s bunch has responded to a three-game losing streak, including a pair of losses to the Oregon schools, by winning three in a row. UCLA has covered the number in back-to-back outings, including Saturday’s 82-79 triumph over USC as a one-point home favorite. Aaron Holiday led the way with 23 points, nine assists and six rebounds. The junior guard played all 40 minutes, hitting 7-of-10 attempts from the floor and 5-of-7 from long distance. Thomas Welsh produced 21 points and eight rebounds, while Kris Wilkes contributed 13 points and five boards.

-- UCLA is No. 58 in the RPI, going 3-3 against the Top 50 and 5-6 versus the Top 100. Other than an 83-75 win over Kentucky in New Orleans, Alford’s bunch lacks a signature win away from home. The Bruins have quality home victories over Washington, USC, Utah and Stanford. They have a bad loss at Oregon State and L’s at Stanford and Oregon aren’t helping their cause, either. UCLA was a part of Joe Lunardi’s First Four Out in his latest edition of ‘Bracketology’ at ESPN.com, so tonight’s shot at a huge road win is obviously crucial.

-- Holiday leads the Bruins in scoring (19.2 PPG), assists (5.4 APG) and steals (1.4 SPG). Welsh (13.0 PPG) paces UCLA in rebounding (10.3 RPG) and FG percentage (48.3%), while Wilkes is averaging 13.8 points and 5.3 RPG.

-- The ‘over’ is 14-9-2 overall for the Wildcats, 6-5 in their home games. They’ve seen the ‘over’ hit in four consecutive contests.

-- The ‘over’ is 13-10 overall for UCLA, 4-1 in its five road tilts.

-- ESPN will have the broadcast at 10:00 p.m. Eastern.

                **B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- While Villanova was falling to St. John’s as a 16-point home favorite, Virginia rallied from a 32-22 intermission deficit to capture a 59-55 win at FSU as a three-point road favorite. The ‘under’ improved to 16-5 overall for UVA when the 114 combined points dropped ‘under’ the 131.5-point total.

-- Purdue is no longer unbeaten in Big Ten play and the longest winning streak in school history is over. Hell, the Boilermakers aren’t even in first place in the league anymore after Keita Bates-Diop’s putback bucket with 2.8 seconds remaining lifted the Buckeyes to a 64-63 victory as 10-point underdogs. Purdue’s Isaac Haas caught a length-of-the-floor pass coming out of a timeout and had a great look at about a 10-foot jumper for the win, but it was off the mark. Bates-Diop paced the winners with 18 points, 11 rebounds and three assists without a turnover. Carsen Edwards had a game-high 28 points in the losing effort.

-- In Wednesday’s late-night action, the Mountain West Conference race got more interesting when UNLV went up to Reno and handed Nevada its second loss in league action. The Runnin’ Rebels beat the Wolf Pack 86-78 as eight-point road underdogs. The ‘under’ is on a 4-2 run for UNLV after the 164 combined points slithered ‘under’ the 165.5-point total. The reason that’s significant is that the ‘over’ went 15-2-1 in the Rebels’ first 18 games. Jovan Mooring scored a game-high 31 points against Nevada thanks to 6-of-12 marksmanship form 3-point range. With the Nevada loss, it falls into second place in the MWC standings, one-half game back of Boise State. The Broncos rallied from six down in the final minute to win at New Mexico two nights ago. Leon Rice’s club is 10-2 in conference play, while the Wolf Pack is 9-2 and one-half game behind.

-- Florida stopped the bleeding of a three-game losing streak in SEC play by pushing past LSU 73-64 last night as a nine-point home favorite. Jalen Hudson scored 18 points, grabbed nine rebounds, had two assists, two steals and one block. Keith Stone added 15 points and Egor Koulechov finished with 12 points and four boards. UF’s defense limited LSU star guard Tremont Waters to nine points, seven rebounds and six assists, but he has seven turnovers, made only 3-of-15 FGAs and 1-of-9 from 3-point territory.

-- Mark Fox’s hot seat in Athens is reaching boiling temperatures after Georgia was run out of Memorial Gymnasium last night. Vanderbilt collected an 81-66 win over UGA as a four-point home ‘chalk’ behind 19 points apiece from Riley LaChance and Saben Lee. The ‘under’ had been on a 10-1 run for the Bulldogs with the lone ‘over’ emerging only because their home loss to Arkansas went to a second overtime, but last night’s 147 combined points flew ‘over’ the 132.5-point tally. Since starting the year with an atrocious 1-14 spread record, the Commodores are 5-1 ATS in their past six games with the only non-cover coming in a 12-point loss at Auburn as 11.5-point puppies.

-- Speaking of Auburn, Mustapha Heron’s potential buzzer-beating trey was off in last night’s 81-80 home loss to Texas A&M. Duane Wilson’s go-ahead FT with 3.5 ticks left broke the tie for A&M. The Aggies have suddenly won three in a row to right the ship in College Station.

-- Maryland hooked up its backers as a 4.5 or five-point ‘dog in last night’s 74-70 loss at Penn State. However, Mark Turgeon’s squad saw its NCAA Tournament at-large hopes take a major hit. The Terrapins were a part of Lunardi’s Next Four Out going into the PSU game.

-- The biggest bubble winner last night was probably Marquette, which was a part of Lunardi’s First Four Out before prevailing 88-85 at Seton Hall as a six-point underdog. Markus Howard dropped 32 points on the Pirates, draining 9-of-13 FGAs, 4-of-6 launches from distance and 10-of-10 from the FT line.

-- Clemson was favored by 18.5 points for tonight’s home game vs. Pitt early this morning. The Tigers are a remarkable 12-0 SU and 8-1 ATS at home this season. The Panthers are winless in seven road assignments, but Kevin Stallings’s squad has managed a 4-3 spread record.

-- James Madison has cancelled its next two games (Thursday vs. UNC-Wilmington and Saturday at Elon) due to concerns over suspected cases of the mumps impacting the Dukes. The fear is that James Madison players could spread the virus to their opponents’ players.

-- SMU’s Shake Milton is ‘out’ indefinitely with a hand injury. This is a huge blow to the Mustangs, who are No. 70 in the RPI going into Thursday’s crucial game at Houston. Milton is averaging 18.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.4 steals per game. SMU was an eight-point underdog early this a.m. The Mustangs have limped to a 1-5 record both SU and ATS in six road outings, while the Cougars are 10-0 SU and 5-1 ATS at home.

-- Charlotte’s Andrien White is ‘questionable’ for tonight’s game against La. Tech due to a concussion. White is averaging 14.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game.

-- UC Santa Barbara has suspended Jalen Canty indefinitely. Canty was averaging 12.9 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.0 blocked shots per game.

-- Tulane guard Melvin Frazier is ‘questionable’ (chest) Thursday against Tulsa. Frazier is averaging 16.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.4 steals per game.

-- Illinois State’s Keyshawn Evans will miss the next 1-3 weeks with a knee injury. Evans is averaging 15.6 points, 3.4 assists and 2.8 rebounds per game. Also, forward Milik Yarbrough (disciplinary) is ‘questionable’ for Thursday’s game against Southern Illinois. Yabrough is averaging 16.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.7 blocked shots per game.

-- Montana leads the Big Sky with its 11-0 record in league play. The Grizzlies, who are 15-5-1 ATS, are perfect at home with a 9-0 SU record and a 6-0 ATS mark. They host Portland St. tonight as eight-point home favorites. The Vikings are 7-4 both SU and ATS in 11 road outings, but they might be without their leading scorer tonight. Deontae North (21.1 PPG, 4.9 RPG) has missed the last three games due to a suspension and is listed as ‘questionable.’

-- Last Calls! Washington State at Oregon State (Pac-12 Network, 10:30 p.m. Eastern), USC at Arizona State (ESPN2, 11:00 p.m.) and Santa Clara at BYU (ESPNU, 11:00 p.m.). The Beavers are nine-point favorites vs. WSU, the Sun Devils are 3.5-point home ‘chalk’ to the Trojans and the Cougars are favored by 16.5 points vs. Santa Clara.

-- Washington State is 0-7 both SU and ATS on the road this year. Ernie Kent is almost certainly looking at a pink slip at the end of this season.

                  Last night's ATS Records
                  NBA: 4-1-1 | NCAA BB: 9-14-1

Wednesday was one we’ll all have no trouble storing away in the memory bank. There are always going to be rough nights, so an ugly college hoops performance isn’t what I’m referring to. For the third time in the last calendar year, three Top 10 teams lost at home on the same night, something that hadn’t happened since 1977 before it happened last season on Feb. 4. Mix in a historic regular-season NBA game that has to rank among the most entertaining over the past few years since it featured a league-record 40 3-pointers made and Feb. 7 is going to be hard to top as far as being the wildest night of 2018. Pelicans-Pacers got canceled because of a roof leak. The upset bug was biting all night long, even catching Hawai’i at home against a UC-Riverside team that hadn’t won a Big West game all season. An intense few hours on a night where lines were razor sharp and made it feel like March. Hopefully far better results will be in store in a month’s time, because I got lit up in college for the first time this month and was too often on the receiving end of bad breaks given all the wild twists. Four college losses came by one point or fewer. The lone NBA loss, which came on my guarantee to snap a seven-game winning streak, was cemented on a rare LeBron James’ buzzer-beater that’s going to be pretty unforgettable given the Cavs’ dire state. It was an incredible night, both riveting and frustrating. Of the three Top 10 teams that were beat outright, I was only on Texas A&M against Auburn. The NBA lock is now 17-for-24 (70.8%) since Jan. 11. Here's Wednesday's recap, complete with some of the highlights (and lowlights):

                  THURSDAY'S FREE SELECTION

                  The pick: Oregon -5
The Ducks have slipped back to 5-5 in Pac-12 play in a season where the conference is undeniably down, so Dana Altman's team badly needs to get on track over the next three weeks. Look for an increased sense of urgency to fuel Oregon here since its a big swing game considering it will be favored against Washington State this weekend and then can make significant closing statements in a four-game stretch against the league's top teams, USC, UCLA, Arizona State and Arizona. The Ducks can still rescue their season. It just has to start tonight against the sizzling Huskies, who have pulled off four straight league wins, three of them upsets. Look for Elijah Brown and Payton Pritchard to have big games and lay the points, riding Oregon.

                  WEDNESDAY'S FREE SELECTION

                  The pick: Villanova -16.5

Wildcats head coach Jay Wright will certainly have an easier time getting his top-ranked team's attention thanks to Duke's weekend assist. The Blue Devils managed to lose to St. John's 81-77 at Madison Square Garden, looking they couldn't be bothered to defend for an entire afternoon. The Red Storm are still 0-11 in the Big East but now carry a target on their back as a team that beat one of the nation's most talented teams. A 'Nova squad that surrendered 37 points to Shamorie Ponds in their Jan. 13 78-71 win at the Garden knows exactly what it could have on their hands at home if they allow him to find a rhythm, so I'd expect a focused effort to prevent this from being even remotely close. Lay the points and ride Villanova.

Result: Our three-game freebie win streak ended with a spectacular failure, as Villanova got beat at home 79-75. I didn't expect Eric Paschall to sit, but there's no excuse for this loss. They settled for too many jumpers when the shot, reliable all season, stopped falling for a change. St. John's outright win paid +1500 if you chose to ignore my opinion, since I'd have given the Red Storm absolutely no shot to pull this off. It was St. John's first win over a top-ranked foe since 1985, back when Chris Mullin was playing. Now he's coaching, suddenly doing so remarkably well.

                  WEDNESDAY'S LOCK

                  The pick: Minnesota -2.5

The Cavs took their struggles to a new low in last night's crippling defeat at the hands of the Magic in Orlando. Blowing a 16-point lead to a team down its two most talented players shows both no heart or cohesion, so with Jimmy Butler leading the Timberwolves into town as one of the few athletes capable of locking down LeBron James while making him work on defense, this is a great situation to pile on and ride Minnesota-2.5, guaranteed. For the in-game parlay, back the over.

Result: James and Butler were brilliant, delivering down the stretch in a fantastic duel. LeBron prevented his Cavs from losing another game by turning in an epic performance (37 points, 10 rebounds, 15 assists), making 3-pointers to answer Minnesota makes in regulation and then blocking Butler's game-winning shot attempt on its last possession of OT. He then caught a pass he should've had no access to since he should've been double-teamed, wheeled and drilled a game-winning fadeaway to close a 140-138 win. The over obviously came in, but the Timberwolves not coming through stung.

                  LOCK THAT DIDN'T CLICK

The pick: Virginia Tech/N.C. State OVER 161
Kevin Keatts has finally gotten the Wolfpack to turn the corner as they take a three-game winning streak into Blacksburg. Currently fourth in the ACC, NC State is just one game up on Virginia Tech, which is sitting in the ninth spot at 5-5 in a tightly-packed race. Both teams will be comfortable playing at a fast pace since the visitors will be able to do damage around the rim and the Hokies should use their speed to excel at home. Ride the over for Wednesday's college hoops guaranteed winner in what should be a high-scoring affair where both teams top the 80-point mark.

Result: This one hurt, coming on the heels of the OT loss in Cleveland. It looked great when the Wolfpack closed to within 61-55 with just under 12 minutes still left, but the rally hit a wall after that. Keatts opted not to foul late in the game, pressing but then pulling back and defending once the Hokies broke it. Virginia Tech won 85-75, taking us to the brink by shooting 63.5 percent from the field. We fell short due to N.C. State's lulls and 10-for-30 3-point shooting. Had State made just one more, chicken dinner would've been served.

                  TOTAL RECALL

The pick: Kansas State/Texas UNDER 133.5
The expectation here is that Bruce Weber will take his chances with his experienced guards in a low-possession game where they will be able to break pressure but then must be wary of rushing down and wasting possessions. Mo Bamba's presence should limit second chances and slow the tempo down considerably in this Big 12 clash. Ride the under.

Result: While this one went as expected, I consider this my most fortunate win on a night where games consistently fell just short. If there hadn't been a lack of foul calls in the second half of Kansas State's 67-64 win in this Big 12 bubble battle, we'd have hit the bonus early and seen a much higher score. It also helped that the teams combined to shoot 6-for-23 in the second half, combining for just 10 fast-break points.

                  CARDIAC ATTACK

The pick: Penn State -4.5/OVER 140
The Terps go out on the road looking to try and improve on a 1-6 road record after beating Wisconsin over the weekend, but they haven't won consecutive games in Big Ten play. With Michael Cekovsky still expected to be out with his heel issue, Maryland is down another rim protector and have no safety net if Bruno Fernando gets into foul trouble. The Nittany Lions have put together four straight strong efforts and have an elite scorer in Tony Carr capable of sealing a win down the stretch. Lay the points with Penn State and ride the over for the in-game parlay.

Result: This early start set the tone for a disappointing night. The Nittany Lions had this parlay looking great for most of the second half, going up double-digits with eight minutes left. They struggled against pressure, got Mike Watkins the ball as an outlet in their press break and suffered the consequences since he's their worst free-throw shooter. Still, after the Terps missed their final shot attempt, Watkins wound up with the rebound and could've delivered the cover by making just one of two free-throws. He missed both. Penn State won 74-70

                  SWING AND A MISS

                  The pick: Purdue -10
Chris Holtmann is back in Indiana coaching a game for the first time since leaving Butler, and the Boilermakers aren't going to make it an enjoyable experience. This group of Buckeyes didn't have to play in West Lafayette last season and has yet to play an excellent team in a true road game. Ohio State's depth issues should be glaring tonight, especially with Kam Williams suspended. Lay the points and ride Purdue to roll here.

Result: Holtmann added to his national Coach of the year resume by keeping his team together despite Purdue racing out to a 14-point lead with just over 10 minutes left. Given the atmosphere at Mackey, which Holtmann later called the best he'd ever coached in, it was surreal to see the Boilermakers fade like they did. Keita Bates-Diop continued his dream season and the Buckeyes found a way to outrebound a massive Purdue team in its house, winning the game on a Bates-Diop putback with 2.8 left. At that point, the cover had long been blown and a short-handed group that I expected would wilt had already proven me wrong. Freshmen Kaleb Wesson and Musa Jallow made huge shots. Ohio State ended Purdue's 19-game winning streak, closing its run at home at 21 to take control of the Big Ten race.

                  PROOF OF CLAIRVOYANCE

                  The pick: Texas A&M +6.5
The Aggies have fared tremendously against teams that want to press them, beating West Virginia and Arkansas at home. It will be tougher to fare well on the road, but they beat Auburn by 19 points last season and have guards Duane Wilson and Armon Gilder available to help settle everyone down and handle the atmosphere and constant hassling. Rebounding should be a major factor in what should be a tight, exciting game. Take the points with Texas A&M.

Result: The Aggies played with the desperation I expected they would carry into this one and imposed their will in the paint, utilizing that edge in rebounding to pull off a huge upset despite blowing a 17-point lead. A&M guards Wilson and Gilder came up huge, with the former drawing a foul with 3.5 seconds left and making a game-winning free-throw for an 81-80 win to hand Auburn its first home loss of the season in 13 outings.

                    — Arizona State 80, USC 78— Trojans’ last three losses are by total of six points.

                    — North Carolina 82, Duke 78— Duke scored 49 points in first half, 29 in second.

                    — UCLA 82, Arizona 74— Bruins made 11-24 behind the arc; this is only their 2nd road win.

                    — Tennessee State 64, Belmont 56— Pretty big upset in the OVC.

                    — Tulsa 91, Tulane 89 OT— Tulsa was 29-40 on foul line; they were down 10 at the half.

                    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random thoughts from the desert……

                    13) One of things that I like about is Las Vegas is sitting in the sportsbook, watching games, and thinking…….last night, I was thinking about how this website can improve.

Came up with couple of ideas, one of which will start in April— I think you’ll enjoy it, and one will take place next fall— some people might not like this one as much, but hopefully it’ll make this site a better one to read and one you can profit more from reading.

                    12) Cleveland Cavaliers made three trades Thursday; they dealt six players, acquired four, and hopefully improved their team.

                    11) Someone on ESPN Thursday afternoon casually mentioned that “Isaiah Thomas might come off the bench for the Lakers.” Not long after, a message appeared on ESPN’s crawl that Thomas’ agent had texted someone at ESPN, saying “Thomas WILL NOT COME OFF THE BENCH for the Lakers.” Apparently someone is really sensitive about what he hears on TV.

                    10) I’ve spent 17 years of my life involved with basketball teams- I did a lot with analytics and numbers to help the head coach make decisions.

If I ever got back into this, one of things I’d change is making sure a player who assisted on a 3-point shot would get credit for 1.5 assists— would have to make a new category, but you get my point. Passing for a foul shot or 3-point basket needs to be recognized, not just 2-point baskets.

                    9) Upsets of the Night:
                    UL-Monroe (+12) 66, Georgia Southern 64
                    North Texas (+10) 67, UAB 60
                    UCLA (+9) 82, Arizona 74
                    Monmouth (+8.5) 72, Iona 50
                    Tennessee State (+7.5) 64, Belmont 56
                    Wisconsin (+5.5) 78, Illinois 69

                    8) One of the new and not necessarily better features of the Westgate sportsbook is an increased interest in hockey- they had the volume up on the hometown Golden Knights’ game Thursday night, instead of UCLA-Arizona, with Pasch/Walton on the mike. No bueno.

                    7) Question of the Day: What would you do if you were worth $10 billion? I was watching a movie on TV last week about the guy who founded Facebook- he has to be pretty damn rich now, right? He is 33 years old and is worth $73 billion, 73 freakin’ billion dollars.

What does he do every day that keeps him interested? Having a sick amount of money is great, but you have to have something that makes you jump out of bed in the morning. I wonder how the really rich people stay motivated? What makes them get up in the morning?

                    6) Dodger pitcher Ross Stripling went to seven weddings this offseason, including his own; five of the seven were guys on the Dodgers getting married.

                    5) Manhattan College is in the Bronx, not Manhattan; Long Island University is in Brooklyn, not on Long Island.

                    4) Toronto Raptors’ guard Kyle Lowry gave $1M to his alma mater Villanova, so they can re-do the locker room facilities in their fieldhouse.

Seems like a lot of cash, but Lowry has struck gold in the NBA- he has a 3-year, $90M contract, so giving away $1M of it ain’t such a big deal, but its a big deal to Villanova— it is the largest gift they’ve ever gotten from a former athlete.

                    3) Portland Trailblazers hired former referee Don Vaden, to serve as a consultant who offers advice on league rules, background on referee personalities and tendencies, and knowledge on how to avoid or draw fouls. Good idea.

                    2) 49ers gave QB Jimmy Garoppolo a 5-year, $137.5M contract, which is a lot of cabbage for a guy with seven NFL starts— he did win all seven of them.

1— Why do college basketball teams have timeouts on the court while NBA teams have them on the bench, where they’re supposed to be?

                              **Davidson at Rhode Island**

-- Rhode Island (19-3 straight up, 12-7 against the spread) is flying solo atop the Atlantic-10 standings with its perfect 11-0 record. URI enjoys a three-game lead over second-place Davidson, which is 8-3 in league play. As of Thursday evening, most Vegas books had the Rams installed as seven-point home favorites.

-- Danny Hurley’s team is No. 5 in the RPI Rankings and 18th in the latest edition of the Associated Press Top 25. URI is 3-3 versus the RPI Top 50 and 4-3 against the Top 100. The Rams have home wins over Providence, St. Bonaventure and Charleston, in addition to a neutral-court victory over Seton Hall. Their three defeats have come at Alabama (68-64), at Nevada (88-81) and vs. Virginia on a neutral court (70-55).

-- Rhode Island is unbeaten in 12 home games with a 7-3 spread record.

-- Hurley’s team hasn’t played since last Friday’s 81-68 win at VCU as a 5.5-point road ‘chalk.’ E.C Matthews led the way with 18 points and five rebounds, while Jared Terrell finished with 16 points, four boards and three assists without a turnover.

-- Terrell is averaging a team-best 18.0 points per game while knocking down 42.2 percent of his 3-balls and 86.7 percent of his free throws. Matthews is scoring at a 14.0 PPG clip.

-- Davidson (13-9 SU, 11-9 ATS) has won three in a row both SU and ATS, including Tuesday’s 91-62 win over St. Joseph’s as a 10.5-point home favorite. Peyton Aldridge scored 32 points, grabbed nine rebounds, blocked one shot and dished out four assists without committing a turnover. Kellan Grady added 15 points on 6-of-7 field-goal attempts and 3-of-4 makes from 3-point range. KiShawn Pritchett was also in double figures with 12 points and nine assists without a turnover. Pritchett knocked down 4-of-6 launches from long distance.

-- Going back further, Davidson has won eight of its past 10 games while posting a 7-2-1 spread record. The two defeats during this span came by three combined points, as the Wildcats lost 65-64 at Dayton before dropping a 66-63 decision to Richmond as 11-point home ‘chalk.’

-- Davidson is No. 128 in the RPI with a 1-4 record against both the Top 50 and 100. We should note that three of the Wildcats’ losses have come by five combined points.

-- Aldridge is third in the A-10 in scoring with his 20.2 points-per-game average. The senior forward is averaging 6.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game.

-- Bob McKillop’s team has compiled a 4-6 SU record and a 4-5-1 ATS mark in 10 true road assignments.

-- The ‘under’ is 12-9 overall for the Wildcats, 6-4 in their road outings, but they’ve seen the ‘over’ hit in three consecutive contests.

-- The ‘over’ is 11-9-1 overall for URI, but the ‘under’ is 6-4 in its home games.

                              -- Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

                              **Minnesota at Indiana**

-- Time could be running out on Richard Pitino as the men’s head basketball coach at Minnesota. The Gophers have lost six games in a row and nine of their past 10, going 2-8 ATS during this stretch. The 35-year-old son of Rick Pitino is in his fifth season at the helm. He has taken Minnesota to only one NCAA Tournament appearance, although he did win the NIT in his initial campaign. Pitino has an 89-73 overall record. His team needs to get hot immediately starting Friday night at Assembly Hall in Bloomington.

-- Most books had Indiana (13-12 SU, 14-11 ATS) listed as a seven-point favorite Thursday night.

-- Archie Miller’s first IU team is 10-5 both SU and ATS in 15 home games.

-- Indiana is No. 110 in the RPI, going winless in eight games against Top-50 opponents. The Hoosiers are 4-8 versus the Top 100, posting wins at home over Penn St., Northwestern and Maryland, in addition to a neutral-court scalp of Notre Dame.

-- Indiana snapped a four-game losing streak in Monday’s 65-43 win at Rutgers as a two-point road favorite. The spread cover improved IU’s ATS record to 10-3 in its past 13 games. Juwan Morgan was the catalyst for the Hoosiers, producing 24 points, eight rebounds, two blocks, one steal and two assists without a turnover. Morgan knocked down 10-of-14 FGAs and 3-of-4 from downtown. Robert Johnson added 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field.

-- Morgan leads the Hoosiers in scoring (16.8 points per game), rebounding (7.3 RPG), field-goal percentage (59.1%) and blocked shots (1.3 BPG).

-- Minnesota (14-12 SU, 10-15 ATS) has limped to a 2-6 SU record and a 3-5 ATS ledger in eight road assignments this year.

-- Minnesota is No. 123 in the RPI with its 2-5 record against the Top 50 and 3-10 mark versus the Top 100.

-- Reggie Lynch remains on suspension and hasn’t played since Jan. 3. He was averaging 10.1 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.1 blocked shots per game. Amir Coffey (14.0 PPG, 4.1 RPG & 3.3 APG) has missed three consecutive contests and is ‘questionable’ at IU due to a shoulder injury. Dupree McBrayer (9.5 PPG, 2.5 APG & 2.3 RPG) is also ‘questionable’ after leaving the Nebraska game with a lower-leg injury.

-- Minnesota returned home Tuesday after dropping a 76-73 decision at Michigan in overtime last weekend. The Gophers raced out to a 7-0 lead vs. Nebraska to force Tim Miles to call a timeout. Before long, though, the Cornhuskers had a 15-point lead and it wasn’t even halftime yet. Pitino’s bunch would rally to make it interesting, but Miles’s team improved to 13-1 ATS in its last 14 games by collecting a 91-85 triumph as a 3.5-point road underdog. In the losing effort for Minnesota, Jordan Murphy contributed 22 points, 13 rebounds, one block and four assists compared to just one turnover. Nate Mason dropped 34 points on the Cornhuskers, draining 7-of-9 from deep, and he also had six assists and only one turnover. Isaiah Washington finished with 10 points, four rebounds and eight assists without a turnover.

-- Murphy paces the Gophers in scoring (17.7 PPG), rebounding (11.7 RPG) and FG percentage (53.5%). Mason (16.4 PPG) is burying 41.4 percent of his 3-balls and has an excellent 109/34 assist-to-turnover ratio.

-- Indiana has won four of the last five head-to-head meetings, going 3-2 ATS in the process. When these teams met at The Barn on Jan. 6, IU captured a 75-71 win as an eight-point road underdog. The 146 combined points fell ‘under’ the 149.5-point total. Johnson dropped 28 points on the Gophers, making 3-of-7 attempts from 3-point land. Johnson also had seven rebounds, seven assists and a pair of steals. Morgan and Justin Smith added 20 points apiece, while Morgan snapped 12 rebounds and blocked four shots. Nate Mason scored a team-best 22 points and dished out nine assists compared to only one turnover in the losing effort. Jordan Murphy finished with 18 points and 10 boards for the Gophers, who also got 18 points out of McBrayer.

-- The underdog is 21-7 ATS in the past 28 meetings of this Big Ten rivalry.

-- The ‘under’ is 7-0-1 in Indiana’s past eight games to improve to 15-9-1 overall, 8-7 in its home tilts.

-- The ‘over’ is 14-11 for the Gophers, 5-3 in their road contests. They’ve seen the ‘over’ cash in four straight games.

-- Fox Sports 1 will provide the telecast at 7:30 p.m. Eastern.

                                NBA: 5-2 | NCAA BB: 13-21

Thursday's action wasn't as exciting as Wednesday's but continued my slide in college as a tough two days filled with backdoor covers or falling just shy on a total continued. The pros was much kinder once again, although my two losses came by a half-point, which is never pleasant. If Jusuf Nurkic had just made his second free-throw in the closing stages of Portland's 109-103 OT win over Charlotte, it would've been a much happier evening. Atlanta hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer in my guarantee loss that liked it plus 1.5 in Orlando, but that only pulled it within a bucket. The Hawks had their chances and lost to the depleted Magic, so it was a wager I don't regret. The same can't be said for a lot of what went down in college, where there were a number of whiffs in addition to a few maddening bad beats. The NBA lock is now 17-for-25 (68%) since Jan. 11. Here's Thursday's recap, complete with some of the highlights (and lowlights):

                                FRIDAY'S FREE SELECTION

                                The pick: Minnesota -7

Jimmy Butler is back in town playing the best basketball of his career, and since LeBron James got the last word in Wednesday's classic OT game in Cleveland, I don't think a hangover ensues for the Timberwolves. The Bulls have a lot of moving parts keeping them from gaining a rhythm, from Zach LaVine still working his way back to Kris Dunn barely out of concussion protocol and still not playing. Lauri Markkanen returns from paternity leave, so the expectation here is that the Timberwolves will be able to put this game away. Ride Minnesota and lay the points.

Result: We got back on track to make it 4-for-5 on freebies after laying a million points with Villanova and watching them get dropped outright by St. John's. The Ducks restored order by stifling Washington 65-40. This was certainly a fun one to be on because there was never any doubt this was coming in over the final 10 minutes of action. This line went from -5 to -8 at one point, but Oregon covered the line shift comfortably.

                                THURSDAY'S BIG PAYDAY

The pick: South Dakota -9, South Dakota/IPFW OVER 154

The Mastodons have won consecutive games in Fort Wayne by a double-digits, but they're a team that hasn't fared well on the road since their up-tempo style doesn't travel as well, particularly against teams capable of filling it up themselves. The first meeting between these teams featured the Coyotes winning by 10 in Indiana on Jan. 11, but this return game should be higher-scoring, though likely with a different result. Ride South Dakota -9 and back the over for the in-game parlay.

Result: The Coyotes got up 21-3 and never trailed, pulling off a wire-to-wire act after scoring the first 11 points. Their second-half lead never dipped below double-digits, so we were never in danger of losing the cover and the over came in late since IPFW fought to lose 86-69. The teams combined for 87 second-half points to deliver on the total portion of the in-game parlay.

                                LOCK THAT DIDN'T CLICK

                                The pick: Arizona -9

This is a golden opportunity for the Wildcats to show that the next 6 weeks will be different than the first few months of the season. UCLA has the look of a 10 seed that's going to struggle to make the NCAA Tournament this season, while U of A can challenge for a spot on the top rung if they can get themselves straight. Expect that to begin with a strong effort here. Lay the points and ride Arizona, guaranteed.

Result: The Wildcats thought they could get by on talent alone, failing to play a lick of defense and putting multiple reasons why this has been perhaps Sean Miller's most trying year on full display. Despite the presence of a Top-5 lock in 7-footer DeAndre Ayton, the Wildcats are soft and inexcusably bad on defense. They lost focus late in the first half, allowing UCLA guard Jaylen Hands to hit three straight 3-pointers to help put this game away. At home, that they weren't good enough to put themselves in position to rescue this result speaks volumes about how much underachieving @APlayersProgram is currently doing in Tucson.

                                TOTAL RECALL

                                The pick: Gonzaga/Pacific OVER 145

Damon Stoudamire has Pacific playing a lot better than they have since moving from the Big West to the West Coast Conference, but I don't see them scaring the Zags like San Diego did Saint Mary's. Expect the Tigers to be proficient enough offensively to score with Gonzaga, in part because they won't be able to stop them. Take the over here.

Result: While I could whine about how Tra Holder's game-winner for ASU against USC prevented OT and left us a basket short on the over, I'll confess to whiffing on this one. Gonzaga spotted the danger of getting into a track meet with the Tigers and played deliberately, working clock and often kicking it back out to reset after obtaining second chances. They failed to cover, too, and came nowhere near our prediction as the Bulldogs pulled out a 71-61 win.

                                CARDIAC ATTACK

                                The pick: Middle Tennessee -19.5

The Owls haven't played many teams better than the Blue Raiders squad that they're visiting tonight. Texas Tech, Georgia State and UNLV each beat depleted Rice by over 20 points, and you should expect this second of three straight road games to feature a total disconnect. Lay the points and ride Middle Tennessee.

Result: This beat was horrible. Middle Tennessee rolled to a 17-point lead and knocked down 15 3-pointers, two of which came on the first possessions of the second half, putting it up 23 points and en route to the wildly lopsided result I expected. Although Rice hung around, the Blue Raiders went up 28 points with 4:37 left and got a 3-pointer from walk-on Chase Miller that set the building off in putting them up 23 with 1:21 remaining. Although the Owls hit a pair of free-throws with 32 seconds left, so long as MTSU milked the shot clock, this would wrap right there. Instead, the Blue Raiders wanted to get Miller one last look, and he took the shot with enough time for Rice to rebound, get down the court and put in a Najja Hunter layup at the buzzer. Final score: 94-75.

                                SWING AND A MISS

                                The pick: Duke +1.5/OVER 167

Losing to St. John's should be a major wake-up call for a Blue Devils squad that simply doesn't defend like they should. If going up against a rival in their house can't get them amped up after an unforgiveable loss in Madison Square Garden, Mike Krzyzewski has major issues on his hands. The Tar Heels will struggle to stop them and are overly reliant on Joel Berry. Ride Duke and the over for the in-game parlay.

Result: Maybe Mike Kryzezewski and Sean Miller can have conference call therapy, since they appear to be in the same boat in fielding incredibly talented teams that can't be bothered to defend. Joel Berry and Kenny Williams had great games, Grayson Allen struggled and the Blue Devils squandered a first-half lead after scoring 50 points over the first 20 minutes. They were held to 28 in the second half in part because they failed to gather defensive rebounds, allowing the Tar Heels multiple second-chance opportunities that made the Blue Devils work to do the one thing that doesn't come easily. The under coming in was a slap in the face as UNC prevailed 82-78.

                                PROOF OF CLAIRVOYANCE

                                The pick: UC-Santa Barbara +1.5

In a strange development given that that the winner in this battle of 7-2 Big West teams takes over sole possession of the conference lead, the top forwards for both teams will be sidelined. Chima Moneke and Jalen Canty each got suspended, but between those substractions, the visiting Gauchos have to like that trade off considering what a great rebounder/defender Moneke is. I don't see UC-Davis surviving his absence. Take the points and ride UC-Santa Barbara.

Result: This went as expected, since the Aggies couldn't defend without Moneke and got blitzed at home by the Gauchos. UCSB scored 49 first-half points and shot 56 percent from the floor. Nevada transfer Leland King had 19 points and 15 boards to help fill in for Canty. The Gauchos shot 11-for-20 from 3-point range an put the game away at the light.
