    • TOP 25 REWIND: Get ready for changes at the top of AP poll
      December 10, 2017

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Duke kept winning through a packed-full schedule in the opening month to become the unanimous No. 1 in the AP Top 25 .

Now that the Blue Devils have lost - along with No. 2 Kansas falling twice - don't expect the same level of agreement on who should be atop Monday's new poll.

The Blue Devils (11-1) lost at Boston College on Saturday in their Atlantic Coast Conference opener, three days after the Jayhawks lost to Washington in Kansas City, Missouri. That was part of a week that saw half of the top 10 lose at least once, including No. 5 Florida, No. 7 Texas A&M and No. 9 Notre Dame.

Duke had managed to win several close calls to start the season, but the Blue Devils couldn't repeat it against the Eagles. It was a reminder that despite all the talent - most notably Marvin Bagley III at the helm of a top-flight recruiting class - Duke needs to improve defensively and doesn't have a lot of depth as of now.

''We told them the truth when they won their first 11 games, too,'' coach Mike Krzyzewski said, `that we were behind a few games and came back . that we're still learning. This is a very young basketball team that just happened to win and be tough in 11 games.''

      KANSAS' WEEK

The Jayhawks, meanwhile, struggled to hit from outside against Washington's zone (5 of 20 from 3-point range) and allowed the Huskies to shoot 48 percent in Wednesday's 74-65 loss - which left Jayhawks senior Devonte Graham to say simply: ''We really just didn't have it tonight.''

Things didn't get any better Sunday, with No. 16 Arizona State pulling away from the Jayhawks in the second half to win 95-85 at Allen Fieldhouse.

      SUN DEVILS SHINE

Speaking of Arizona State, maybe it's time to start paying closer attention to what Bobby Hurley's unbeaten bunch is doing. The Sun Devils (9-0) are off to their best start since the 1974-75 season and have a second big win to go with one against now-No. 13 Xavier on Nov. 24.

      NEW NO. 1?

So after all the trouble at the top, who will rise to the No. 1 spot? No. 3 Michigan State and No. 4 Villanova each have a case.

The Spartans (9-1) suffered their only loss against Duke in the Champions Classic, but have since won the PK80 Invitational in a performance that included a dominant lockdown of reigning national champion North Carolina. Michigan State beat Rutgers and Southern Utah in the past week.

The Wildcats (10-0) earned an impressive win against No. 12 Gonzaga on Tuesday in New York, but they had to fight to the final minute Sunday to close out a La Salle team that entered at 5-5.

      TRIPPED UP TWICE

Florida, No. 14 Minnesota and No. 22 Nevada each lost two games to set themselves up for a fall, though the Gators' stumbles were particularly glaring since both came at home.

Playing for the first time since blowing a 17-point second-half lead in a loss to Duke in the PK80, Florida (6-3) lost by 17 to Florida State on Monday. Two days later, the Gators led for all of 93 seconds in a 65-59 loss to Loyola Chicago. Florida salvaged a win Saturday against No. 17 Cincinnati in the Never Forget Tribute Classic in Newark, New Jersey, to avoid a four-game skid.

The Gophers (8-3) lost at Nebraska in Big Ten play, then lost at Arkansas . The Wolf Pack (8-2) lost at Texas Tech in overtime and to No. 20 TCU in the Hall of Fame Basketball Classic in Los Angeles.

      START OF A COMEBACK?

Arizona's 0-3 showing at the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas made the Wildcats the first team in three decades to go from No. 2 in the AP Top 25 to unranked in a week. But Arizona has won four straight games, including Tuesday's win against Texas A&M followed by Saturday's home win against Alabama .

The Wildcats also got some good news with the season debut of sophomore Rawle Alkins after a preseason foot injury.

              • Villanova jumps to No. 1 in AP Top 25
                December 11, 2017

Villanova's unbeaten start now includes a No. 1 ranking in the AP Top 25 , while Arizona State is making a rapid rise into the top 10 under third-year coach Bobby Hurley.

After a tumultuous week in which unanimous No. 1 Duke and No. 2 Kansas lost, the Wildcats (10-0) earned 41 of 65 first-place votes to hop over Michigan State and reach the top for the third straight season.

Villanova and Michigan State were the favorites to take over at the top after the Blue Devils' weekend loss at Boston College, though there was far less certainty for voters about who was now the nation's top team. The Spartans (9-1) earned 19 first-place votes to climb from third to second, while the other five first-place votes went to the Sun Devils - who leapt 11 spots to No. 5 after Sunday's win at Kansas .

Arizona State (9-0) is off to its best start since the 1974-75 season. Now the Sun Devils - who also have a win against Xavier this season - have their highest ranking since reaching third during the 1980-81 season.

Wichita State climbed three spots to No. 3, followed by Duke and Arizona State. Unbeaten Miami climbed four spots to No. 6, followed by North Carolina, Kentucky, Texas A&M and Xavier to round out the top 10.

Villanova helped itself with an impressive win against No. 12 Gonzaga last week in New York, though the Wildcats had to fight to the final minute Sunday to close out a La Salle team that entered at 5-5.

Villanova reached No. 1 for the first time in February 2016 and stayed there for three polls before going on to win the national championship. The Wildcats held the No. 1 spot three different times last season, including in the final poll entering the NCAA Tournament.

''We've been through the cycle now,'' coach Jay Wright said in an interview with the AP. ''We've been through where you're No. 1 for the first time. That's something you have to learn to deal with. And then you lose it. And you learn how to deal with that. Then you go through it again with a new group.

''I think we've got the experience now to understand that it's a great honor but a lot of responsibility comes with it.''

                KANSAS' FALL

The Jayhawks (7-2) slid 11 spots to No. 13 after two losses last week, the first coming against Washington in Kansas City, Missouri, before losing to the Sun Devils in Allen Fieldhouse.

                SHUFFLE UP

Only two teams - No. 8 Kentucky and No. 12 Gonzaga - stayed in the same spot. Thirteen teams rose in the poll, while four of the seven teams that fell slid at least eight spots.

                TOP RISERS

Arizona State's leap was the biggest, though No. 11 West Virginia (9-1) moved up seven spots after beating then-No. 15 Virginia. No. 14 TCU (10-0) climbed six spots after a win against a then-ranked Nevada team.

Miami, UNC, No. 15 Seton Hall, No. 17 Purdue and No. 20 Tennessee all climbed four spots.

                LONGEST SLIDES

While Kansas' losses stood out, No. 22 Florida had the biggest fall of the week.

The Gators (6-3) slid 17 spots after home losses to Florida State and to Loyola Chicago - a game in which they led for all of 93 seconds. Florida salvaged a win against Cincinnati in the Never Forget Tribute Classic in Newark, New Jersey, to avoid a four-game skid.

No. 18 Notre Dame (8-2) fell nine spots after an upset loss to Ball State, while the No. 25 Bearcats (7-2) slid eight spots.

                NEWCOMERS

There were three newcomers to this week's poll, though one is more of a welcome back.

The list included No. 19 Florida State (9-0) and No. 24 Texas Tech (7-1), while Arizona returned to the rankings at No. 23.

Arizona's 0-3 showing at the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas made the Wildcats the first team in three decades to go from No. 2 in the AP Top 25 to unranked in a week. But four straight wins have the preseason Final Four favorite back in the poll.

                SLIDING OUT

Minnesota (No. 14 last week), Nevada (No. 22) and Southern California (No. 25) all fell out of the poll.

                • Top 25 Betting Recap
                  December 11, 2017

Each week until March Madness we'll take a look at how the Top 25 fared from college basketball, but straight up and against the number, while also taking a look at their upcoming schedule.

It was a rough week for Kansas (7-2 SU, 4-3 ATS), as they suffered back-to-back losses to Pac-12 Conference squads. They suffered a 74-65 setback against Washington (7-3 SU, 4-5 ATS) on a neutral court and then they were dumped by 10 points against ascending Arizona State (9-0 SU, 8-1 ATS). The Jayhawks will look to get back on track with a trip to Nebraska. Meanwhile, the Sun Devils covered their eighth consecutive game since failing to cover in their opener against Idaho State. In that non-cover back on Nov. 10, they were 20.5 favorites and won 94-74, so the Sun Devils have been on fire. Total players are big fans of the Sun Devils, too, with the 'over' going 6-2-1 so far.

It was an equally trying week for Florida (6-3 SU, 5-4 ATS) as they kicked off the week with a 17-point loss against rival Florida State (9-0 SU, 7-0 ATS), which was a bad loss because of the margin. It got worse, as they suffered a shocking 65-59 setback against Loyola-Chicago (10-1 SU, 5-2 ATS). While the Ramblers are having a solid season with 10 wins in 11 tries, they're a Horizon League squad which hasn't really been tested. The Gators at least salvaged the week with a good win against Cincinnati (7-2 SU, 3-4 ATS), a side having their own issues of late.

The Bearcats started off their season with a 7-0 SU/3-2 ATS record through the first seven outings, but they suffered a setback at Xavier (9-1 SU, 9-1 ATS) in their Queen City rivalry game and they were dumped by six points at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. on Saturday. The Bearcats are in a tailspin, failing to cover in three in a row. Total bettors have been a big fan of UC, however, as the 'under' has connected in five of their past six outings.

Duke (11-1 SU, 7-3 ATS) had been sailing along as the unanimous No. 1 team in the nation. They thumped a non-conference opponent by 57 points on Tuesday night at home, but now they're not even unbeaten in the ACC. Boston College (7-3 SU, 2-3 ATS) pulled off the huge upset on Saturday in Chestnut Hill, winning 89-84 as 15-point underdogs, hitting +900 on the moneyline. While they suffered the loss, the 'over' still came through. That's 10 games with a total - and 10 'over' results for the Blue Devils so far this season.

It wasn't a good week for the Big Ten's Minnesota (8-3 SU, 6-4 ATS), as they suffered a pair of setbacks to unranked opponents, including a 78-68 loss on the road against Nebraska (7-4 SU, 6-5 ATS) in their second conference tilt. While the Golden Gophers are in a bit of a swoon, they continue to pile up big offensive totals. The 'over' has now connected in eiught of their 10 games with a total. They'll put that number to the test in a non-conerence tilt against Drake (5-4 SU, 4-2-1 ATS), a team which has allowed at least 74 points in seven of their past eight outings, with the 'over' going 5-1 in their past six contests.

Texas Christian (10-0 SU, 6-4 ATS) has covered a season-high three straight games after pushing aside a good Nevada (8-2 SU, 8-2 ATS) side on Saturday. The Horned Frogs will have the week off before hitting the hardwood on Monday, Dec. 18 against Texas Southern (0-8 SU, 1-0 ATS). As such, you expect to see the Horned Frogs hanging around the Top 25 for a while before they're first real test of the season Dec. 30 against Kansas (7-1 SU, 2-6 ATS), and then Jan. 2 on the road at Baylor (7-2 SU, 2-2 ATS).

                          **Mississippi State at Cincinnati**

-- Mississippi State (8-0 straight up, 1-3 against the spread) is the only remaining SEC team with an unbeaten record. Ben Howland’s team takes that unblemished ledger into the Queen City to take on Cincinnati tonight. As of early this morning, most betting shops had Cincinnati (7-2 SU, 3-4 ATS) installed as an 11-point favorite. One offshore had the total at 139 points.

-- Mississippi State is playing its first true road game and is an underdog for the first time. MSU is ranked 21st in the nation in scoring defense, limiting oppoents to a 61.9 points-per-game average. The Bulldogs are 17th in the country in field-goal percentage defense (37.5%).

-- Mississippi State is No. 29 in the RPI Rankings, posting three victories over RPI Top-100 foes. The Bulldogs have wins over Dayton (61-59), Stephen F. Austin (80-75) and North Dakota State (83-59).

-- Cincinnati is undefeated in four home games with a 1-1 spread record. The Bearcats won their first seven games before dropping back-to-back contests. They’ll be looking to avoid a three-game slide tonight after Saturday’s 66-60 loss to Florida at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. The 126 combined points easily stayed ‘under’ the 147-point tally. Cane Broome scored a team-best 15 points in the losing effort. Jacob Evans finished with 13 points, six rebounds and two seals, but he committed five turnovers, made only 4-of-13 shots from the field and didn’t have any assists. Gary Clark contributed nine points and 13 boards.

-- Cincinnati is ranked 25th in the Associated Press’s national rankings, but it is just No. 111 in the RPI. Mick Cronin’s squad is 1-1 against the RPI Top 50 and 2-2 versus the Top 100. The Bearcats beat Wyoming (78-53) and Buffalo (73-67) in the Cayman Islands Classic. They lost at Xavier (89-76) and vs. UF.

-- Clark is averaging team-highs in scoring (13.2 PPG) and rebounding (8.6 RPG). Evans (13.1 PPG) paces the Bearcats in assists (3.6 APG) and blocked shots (1.4 BPG). Broome (10.4 PPG) is shooting at a 40.9 percent clip from 3-point land and has a team-best 1.3 steals per game.

-- MSU sophomore guard Tyson Carter is averaging a team-best 14.0 PPG. He is shooting at a 37.5 percent clip from 3-point land, 49.4 percent from the field and 88.9 percent from the free-throw line. Quinndary Weatherspoon (13.2 PPG) is averaging team-highs in steals (1.4 SPG) and assists (3.6 APG). Nick Weatherspoon, the true freshman who is Quinndary’s younger brother, is averaging 10.9 PPG and has a 23/10 assists-to-turnovers ratio. True freshman center Abdul Ado (7.3 PPG, 5.9 RPG) has a team-high 17 rejections.

-- UC owns a 3-2 spread record in five games as a double-digit favorite.

-- UC is ranked 20th in the nation in scoring defense (61.8 PPG) and 11th in FG percentage ‘D’ (36.8%).

-- The ‘under’ is 5-2 overall for the Bearcats, 1-1 in their home outings.

-- The ‘under’ is 3-1 overall for the Bulldogs.

-- These schools haven’t met since MSU visited U.S. Bank Arena in 2008 when the Bearcats captured a 75-63 win as five-point home ‘chalk.’ Bets on the total (138) resulted in a push.

                          -- Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

                          **Michigan at Texas**

-- As of early this morning, most spots had Texas listed as a six-point home favorite. One offshore shop had the total at 128 points.

-- Michigan (8-3 SU, 5-5 ATS) is winless both SU and ATS in a pair of road assignments. John Beilein’s team lost 86-71 at North Carolina as a nine-point underdog on Nov. 29, in addition to dropping a 71-62 decision at Ohio State last Tuesday.

-- Michigan bounced back from the loss at Ohio State to capture a 78-69 overtime win Saturday over UCLA. The Wolverines took the cash as seven-point home favorites, hooking up their backers with a super-fortunate spread cover. Charles Matthews, a transfer from Kentucky who sat out last season, scored 20 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Moritz Wagner dropped 23 points on the Bruins thanks to 10-of-16 shooting from the field. The junior forward knocked down 3-of-5 launches from long distance. Zavier Simpson added 15 points and four steals, hitting 6-of-9 attempts from the field in 24 minutes of playing time from off the bench.

-- Wagner is averaging team-highs in scoring (16.1 PPG), rebounding (8.0 RPG) and field-goal percentage (56.0%). Matthews (14.6 PPG, 4.8 RPG) has made 55.2 percent of his shots from the field, while senior guard Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahim (9.6 PPG) has a stellar 39/6 assists-to-turnover ratio.

-- Michigan is No. 70 in the RPI, but it has lost both games it’s played against Top-100 competition. The Wolverines’ best wins have come over Central Michigan (72-65) and UCLA at home, in addition to their 68-60 triumph over VCU at the Maui Classic. Beilein’s bunch took another loss in Maui when it went down against LSU (77-75).

-- Texas (6-2 SU, 1-3 ATS) is unbeaten in four non-lined home games to date. The Longhorns are 55th in the RPI, going 2-1 versus the Top 50 and 2-2 against the Top 100. They have taken their two defeats vs Duke (85-78) and Gonzaga (76-71) at the PK80 Classic in Portland over the Thanksgiving holidays.

-- Texas beat Butler 61-48 in Portland and has also defeated Lipscomb (#42 RPT) in Austin by an 80-57 count. The Longhorns are off this past Tuesday’s 71-67 win at VCU as 6.5-point road favorites. Andrew Jones led the winners with 19 points on 4-of-6 shooting from downtown. Dylan Osetkowski finished with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Mohamed Bamba finished with 13 points, 13 boards and four blocked shots. Eric Davis Jr. was also in double figures with 11 points.

-- Jones paces Texas in scoring (15.2 PPG) and is shooting at a 44.4 percent clip from 3-point land. Osetkowski (14.0 PPG, 7.9 RPG) is a transfer from Tulane who sat out last season. He and Bamba are forces in the paint. Bamba, a true freshman who was ranked by many publications as the No. 2 player in the nation coming out of high school, has not disappointed. He is averaging 10.7 points, 10.1 rebounds and 4.0 blocked shots per game. Bamba is ranked third in the nation in rejections. Kerwin Roach (11.1) is also scoring in double figures.

-- Shaka Smart’s squad is 35th in the country in scoring defense (63.8 PPG), 22nd in FG percentage ‘D’ (37.8%) and 18th at defending the 3-point line (28.2%).

-- The ‘under’ is 6-3 overall for the Wolverines, 1-1 in their road contests.

-- Totals have been an overall wash (2-2) for UT.

-- ESPN2 will have the telecast at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (AP) - Jacob Evans III had 24 points and eight rebounds as Cincinnati recovered from back-to-back losses and handed Mississippi State its first defeat.
