  • Sweet 16 lines hit the board following wild March Madness opening weekend

"Wisconsin is a dangerous team, and the wiseguys know that this is a team that can beat anyone because of its system."

Sunday night was a spectacular way to cap the avalanche of college hoops that the first four days of the NCAA Tournament provides. A buzzer-beating cover by Southern California, though Baylor moved on. Then another USC – South Carolina – knocked off perennial power Duke outright. Now we’re down to the Sweet 16, and Patrick Everson takes a look at a few of the opening lines, with insights from Scott Cooley of offshore sportsbook Bookmaker.eu.

No. 4 Purdue Boilermakers vs. No. 1 Kansas Jayhawks (-4)

Kansas had little trouble through the first two rounds in the Midwest Region, rumbling to blowout wins and covers in both games. The Jayhawks (30-4 SU, 13-18-1 ATS) boatraced No. 16 seed UC Davis 100-62 as a 22.5-point favorite Friday, then rolled No. 9 Michigan State 90-70 as a 7.5-point chalk Sunday.

Purdue (27-7 SU, 19-10-2 ATS) also won and covered twice to reach the Sweet 16. The Boilermakers dropped No. 13 seed Vermont 80-70 laying 8.5 points Thursday, then held off a huge rally by No. 5 Iowa State to win 80-76 giving 1 point Saturday.

“The public is going to jump all over Kansas, as they’ll see this is a low number,” Cooley said of the 9:35 p.m. ET Thursday matchup. “But we don’t want to give the Boilermakers too much value, since they’ve been very strong through the first two legs of the tourney.”

Late Sunday night, action indeed took the line to Kansas -4.5 at Bookmaker.eu.

No. 11 Xavier Musketeers vs. No. 2 Arizona Wildcats (-7.5)

Xavier is riding high as the only double-digit seed to survive the first weekend. The Musketeers (23-13 SU, 17-18 ATS) stopped No. 6 seed Maryland 76-65 as a 2-point underdog Thursday, then steamrolled No. 3 seed Florida State 91-66 as a 7-point pup Saturday.

Meanwhile, Arizona is right where everyone expected it would be in the West Region, playing in this Thursday contest at 10 p.m. ET. The Wildcats (32-4 SU, 19-14-3 ATS) cruised past No. 15 North Dakota 100-82 on last Thursday, pushing as an 18-point favorite, then fended off St. Mary’s 69-60 giving 4.5 points Saturday.

“Early smart money has come in on the underdog, so we’ve already dropped a half-point, but that’s not an indicator it will continue to plummet,” Cooley said of lowering Arizona a tick to -7. “Xavier has been impressive, but bettors haven’t respected their conference during the Big Dance thus far.”

No. 8 Wisconsin Badgers vs. No. 4 Florida Gators (-1.5)

Wisconsin wasn’t expected to make it through the first weekend in the East Region. As the No. 8 seed, that had to come at big expense to somebody – in this case, overall No. 1 seed and defending national champion Villanova. The Badgers (27-9 SU, 17-16 ATS) dispatched No. 9 Virginia Tech 84-74 as a 6-point fave Thursday, then shocked ‘Nova 65-62 as a 5.5-point ‘dog Saturday.

Florida (26-8 SU, 19-13 ATS) entered the NCAA Tournament off back-to-back losses to Vanderbilt – once on the road to end the regular season, then in the quarterfinals of the SEC tournament. But the Gators ironed out the kinks by Thursday, beating No. 13 East Tennessee State 80-65 as a 10-point chalk. Florida followed with a stifling 65-39 victory over No. 5 Virginia giving 2 points.

“We’re giving the under-appreciated Badgers a bunch of respect here, and again, the squares will likely look toward Florida,” Cooley said. “But Wisconsin is a dangerous team, and the wiseguys know that this is a team that can beat anyone because of its system. This number could climb initially, but I don’t think we’ll see it any higher come tipoff.”

            • Tuesday’s six-pack

Odds on who will get the most saves this season (William Hill Sports):

              4-1— Kenley Jansen

              9-2— Zach Britton

              7-1— Mark Melancon, Aroldis Chapman

              8-1— Edwin Diaz

              10-1— Jeurys Familia

              12-1— Craig Kimbrel, Wade Davis

              ***********************

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……..

              13) You don’t read enough uplifting stories these days; saw one on Twitter Sunday night on how former Indiana coach Tom Crean is a terrific guy, doing random acts of kindness around the Bloomington area throughout his seven years coaching the Hoosiers.

Crean is being mentioned for the LSU job; he got Marquette to the Final Four when he had Dwyane Wade. The man can coach; am guessing he’ll have a new job soon, but being selfish, would actually be curious to hear him on TV for a season.

              12) In 1980, Duke’s basketball coach quit to go to South Carolina, in part because the Duke AD didn’t have the coaches’ parking lot paved, even though the coach requested it after he made the Final Four in ’78. When the coach left, Duke hired a young coach named Krzyzewski to replace him, so Duke fans shouldn’t be too annoyed the Blue Devils lost to Carolina Sunday.

If the Gamecocks hadn’t hired Bill Foster away from Duke 37 years ago, maybe the Coach K era never would’ve happened.

              11) Counting all four postseason tournaments, ACC teams are 5-15 against the spread. All this “Which conference is best/worst?” arguments are cyclical, it changes from year to year.

              10) Last three times Arkansas made the NCAA tournament, they were eliminated by North Carolina, in 2008, 2015, 2017.

              9) Ominous stats for UCLA (South), Oregon (Midwest), who are playing in regional semifinals this week: since ’06, Pac-12 teams are 10-6 in West Region semis/finals, but 1-11 in other region’s semis/finals. Arizona is still playing in the West region.

              8) Hey, they found Tom Brady’s Super Bowl jersey; now I can sleep better.

              7) Since 2010, Wisconsin/Kentucky (six each) have most Sweet 16 appearances.

              6) Greg Maddux faced 20,421 hitters in his career; of those, only 310 times did he have a 3-0 count. Of the 310 3-0 counts, 177 of them were intentional walks.

              5) NFL is considering shortening overtime to 10:00 instead of 15:00. They should eliminate it altogether in preseason games.

              4) QB Josh McCown gets $6M for one year from the Jets, where he’ll have a chance to start.

              3) LIU went 20-12 this season, 13-5 in the NEC, but they fired their coach Monday. Must be an interesting backstory there. Guy went 46-42 in five years in the NEC, making the NCAA’s in his first year. Doesn’t seem like a record that merited a dismissal.

              2) Philadelphia 76ers’ studio show is unique; former St Joe’s coach Jim Lynam is an analyst, and so is his daughter Dei Lynam. I’m old enough to remember when St Joe’s won a tournament game way back when and his daughter ran on the court and hugged him- she was a kid back then.

1— Our thoughts/prayers go out to former NFL WR Dwight Clark, who announced he has ALS and is fighting that crippling disease. One thing, though…….

My mother passed away in 2004; she had Alzheimer’s, dementia and arthritis in her knees, but she never played one down of football. Football isn’t responsible for everything.

              • Extra college basketball games

Oakland plays fast, Richmond plays little like Princeton; good contrast of styles. Oakland won 10 of its last 11 games; they were down 19 at half at Clemson in last game, but won 74-69- they scored 24 points in first half, 50 in second. Grizzlies are 9-3 outside Horizon League. Spiders won six of last seven games; they’re 7-6 outside A-14. Richmond won last game at Alabama; they shot 61% inside arc.

TCU is 12-1 outside Big X this season, with only loss by 15 at SMU; Horned Frogs won three of last four games- they survived 19 turnovers in 66-59 home win over Fresno State Wednesday. Frogs lost their last four road games; their last road win was Feb 1 at K-State. Iowa won five of its last six games; they’re 9-5 outside Big 14, beating Iowa State by 14 in only Big X game.

Georgia Tech won seven of its last eight home games, with only loss to NC State; Jackets are 9-4 outside ACC- they’re 5-7 in last 12 games overall. Belmont won 19 of last 21 games; they won at Georgia last game, making 14-31 on arc- they’re 7-4 outside OVC, and won nine of last ten road games overall. Belmont shoots 62% inside arc for season, best in country- their win at Georgia was their first win in five top 100 games this season.

                • West Virginia guards getting it done
                  March 20, 2017

Just in time, West Virginia's Bob Huggins is getting the most out of his top three guards.

Jevon Carter, Daxter Miles Jr. and Tarik Phillip were terrific on offense in a win over Notre Dame on Saturday that propelled the Mountaineers into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

The trio combined for 54 of West Virginia's 83 points against the Fighting Irish, going 17 of 29 from the floor, including 7 of 10 3-pointers.

They'll take the fourth-seeded Mountaineers (28-8) into the regional semifinals on Thursday against top-seeded Gonzaga (34-1) in San Jose, California.

''Everybody's just stepping up for us as the right time,'' Carter said.

It hadn't been that way for parts of the season.

Carter has overcome some cold shooting to emerge as the team's leading scorer. He's been in double figures in 11 of his last 12 games, reaching 24 points three times, including against Notre Dame.

Miles missed the first three games with an illness. The low point came in December when he was ejected after elbowing Virginia's Isaiah Wilkins in the face. He scored in single digits in two-thirds of the regular-season games and spent several as a backup late in the season.

Phillip went through a 2-for-21 shooting stretch over three games in late February.

All three had struggles in the Big 12 tournament, when West Virginia lost to Iowa State in the championship game.

A week later, they found a rhythm together.

''They put an enormous amount of time in,'' Huggins said. ''They're in the practice facility 12 months out of the year. It's great when you don't have to kind of tell people to go in there. You can see it.

''Tarik came in not a very good shooter. He's a pretty good shooter now. J.C. came in and was not real consistent. He's pretty consistent now. They deserve a lot of credit. They want to get better and they want to win.''

Carter, Miles and Phillip have helped make up for the departure of the Mountaineers' top two scorers from last season, when West Virginia lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Stephen F. Austin.

Now West Virginia heads to the West Coast, which doesn't seem to faze the Mountaineers considering their Big 12 road trips often consist of 1,000-mile trips or longer one way.

''I would think they learned a lot from a year ago,'' Huggins said. ''Our practices have been better. Our focus has been better. They've played in big games in really hard environments and played well. That part of it I don't think bothers them.''

West Virginia's 28 wins are the second-most under Huggins to the 2010 team that went to the Final Four.

''I'm just tired of everybody doubting us,'' Carter said. ''We just go out there and prove people wrong. It just feels good.''

                  • ACC flameout reshapes the Sweet 16
                    March 20, 2017

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) The Atlantic Coast Conference's strong regular season only stood to set up a first-weekend flameout in the NCAA Tournament.

The league had a record nine bids, but North Carolina is the only one alive in the Sweet 16. And the South Region's No. 1 seed was fortunate to survive a second-round game against Arkansas to get there.

Still, top seeds Gonzaga, Kansas and UNC headline a regional round featuring 12 of the top 16 seeds, two more than last season.

The rest of the top conferences fared much better than the ACC. The Pac-12 is 8-1 and the Southeastern Conference is 7-2 so far, joining the Big 12 (8-3) and Big Ten (8-4) with three Sweet 16 teams each.

Here's a look at the updated Final Four paths for the top remaining teams in each region:

                    ---

                    SOUTH

This is the only bracket with the top four seeds still alive, so the Tar Heels' path looks the same as it did on Selection Sunday.

UNC (29-7) needed a game-closing 12-0 run to rally past the eighth-seeded Razorbacks. Now the Tar Heels meets fourth-seeded Butler (25-8), which beat No. 1 seed Villanova twice this season.

That game is the undercard to Friday's matchup of second-seeded Kentucky (31-5) and third-seeded UCLA (31-4) in Memphis, Tennessee. The Wildcats survived a tough fight with Wichita State, while the Bruins beat Cincinnati to set up a rematch of a December game won by the Bruins.

''I don't know if all the other regions went chalk, but it's 1, 2, 3, 4 in the South,'' Bruins coach Steve Alford said. ''So that South Region and bracket is going to be a lot of fun.''

                    ---

                    WEST

This is the only other region to have its No. 1 and No. 2 seeds both make the Sweet 16.

Top-seeded Gonzaga (34-1) faces fourth-seeded West Virginia (28-8) on Thursday in San Jose, California; No. 2 seed Arizona (32-4) meets 11-seed Xavier (23-13) - the lowest-seeded team still in the field after its rout of 3-seed Florida State.

If seeds hold, that would set up a rematch of a December game won by the Bulldogs 69-62. But Arizona didn't have Allonzo Trier, who was suspended for the first 19 games for performance-enhancing drugs.

The matchup would still offer a Final Four breakthrough chance for Gonzaga's Mark Few or Arizona's Sean Miller, two coaches yet to get there despite a combined five Elite Eight appearances.

''I know this (team) certainly is right there, should be considered with any that's ever played'' at Gonzaga, Few said. ''There's probably two or three of them that should be in that mix. Ultimately we're going to have to accomplish that Final Four to kind of put it to rest and all that.''

                    ---

                    MIDWEST

The Midwest also had three of its top four seeds reach the Sweet 16. But it's the bottom half of the bracket commanding the most attention with 7-seed Michigan, possibly the hottest team in the field.

The Wolverines (26-11) had a scary moment before the Big Ten Tournament when the plane set to carry them to Washington slid off a runway during an aborted takeoff. They played the first game in practice jerseys but ended up winning the title, and now have beaten Oklahoma State and 2-seed Louisville for their first NCAA wins since 2014.

Michigan made 16 3-pointers against the Cowboys and has made 33 of 52 shots (63.4 percent) after halftime in those two wins.

''That's been our identity in the last month and a half, finding different ways to win,'' leading scorer Derrick Walton Jr. said. ''Whether it's the 3-ball or not, it's finding multiple different ways to win and taking what the game gives us.''

Michigan faces No. 3 seed Oregon (31-5) in Kansas City, Missouri, on Thursday. The Jayhawks (30-4) get fourth-seeded Purdue (27-7), the Big Ten regular-season champion.

                    ---

                    EAST

Welcome to the lone topsy-turvy bracket after losses by No. 1 overall seed Villanova and No. 2 seed Duke.

Now third-seeded Baylor (27-7) is the highest remaining seed entering a matchup with seventh-seeded South Carolina (24-10), which is in the Sweet 16 for the first time in the current tournament format after hanging 65 second-half points on the preseason No. 1-ranked Blue Devils in Sunday's 88-81 upset .

The other half of Friday's bracket in New York features fourth-seeded Florida (26-8) against No. 8 seed Wisconsin (27-9), which upset the reigning champion Wildcats on Saturday. The Badgers are in the Sweet 16 for the sixth time in seven years behind Bronson Koenig and Nigel Hayes - two holdovers from a run to the national-title game in 2015.

''You have all types of your ranking systems, statistic, analytics guys that they put,'' Hayes said. ''The thing is with all those algorithms, they can't calculate heart, will to win, toughness, desire. They can't put that into a formula to come out with a percentage chance to win, and that's the things that we have.''

                    • Duke looks to who stays, who leaves
                      March 20, 2017

Duke is facing its annual list of offseason questions - who stays, who goes - much earlier than anyone expected.

The Blue Devils started the season as a favorite to win its sixth national title but instead failed to make it out of the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament.

''Your mood is definitely down,'' guard Luke Kennard said. ''You're ashamed of another loss and the season being over. There's definitely, definitely a quiet atmosphere.''

The second-seeded Blue Devils (28-9) lost to the seventh-seeded Gamecocks 88-81 , bringing an abrupt end to season that will be remembered for a relentless string of distractions and sideshows.

So now, Duke shifts into offseason mode, waiting to find out what its roster will look like in the fall.

Freshman Jayson Tatum is a likely one-and-done player, and Harry Giles could be one, too. Kennard could investigate his NBA options as well, after a sophomore season in which he averaged a team-best 19.5 points. Maybe guard Grayson Allen also turns pro after his distraction-filled junior year.

''I'll start getting time to think about it, I guess,'' Allen said. ''There hasn't been any time for that or any of those thoughts in my head.''

What will linger for Duke fans are those memorable hiccups during the season, before South Carolina out-toughed the top-ranked team in the preseason and sent the Blue Devils to their earliest NCAA exit since their first-round loss to Mercer in 2014.

                      - Three key freshmen missed time at the beginning of the season with injuries. Giles, who had a third knee surgery in three years, was slowed all season and never reached the level of play that was expected of the nation's No. 1 recruit.

                      - Allen received an indefinite suspension in December that ultimately lasted one game after he was caught tripping an opponent for the third time in a calendar year, then had every move the rest of the year critiqued on social media.

                      - Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski left the team for a month to have back surgery , handing the team over to assistant Jeff Capel , and near the end of his sabbatical deployed one of his oldest motivational tactics by briefly prohibiting his players from wearing Duke gear.

Despite all those interruptions, as Krzyzewski referred to them, the Blue Devils became the first team to win the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament with four wins in four days . And when they were asked about this season being defined by its unfulfilled potential, they pointed to that accomplishment as evidence to the contrary.

''I don't know if I can say that, just because I think we were hitting our stride to end the year,'' Allen said. ''That's the only thing you can ask of a team.''

Indeed, that echoed a telling comment made by Krzyzewski as the Blue Devils began practice in October after Giles' knee surgery. The coach pointed out that the goal was to have Duke at its best in March because ''the (national) championship is not going to be won in October and November'' and because that was a legitimate goal, ''We're going to try to conduct our season appropriately.''

They seemed to be on track, but after being derailed by the Gamecocks the focus is on next season.

                      • Boeheim looks ahead without assistant beside him
                        March 20, 2017

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim heads into an offseason like no other in the past two decades - without assistant Mike Hopkins.

Coming off a down year (19-15, 10-8 Atlantic Coast Conference) and without his top assistant to lend extra stability, Boeheim faces a challenging road ahead. Hopkins, who was in line to succeed his Hall of Fame mentor after next season, was hired Sunday as head coach at Washington.

''It'll be difficult,'' Boeheim said. ''I've known Mike since he was 16 years old. I would have liked Mike to take over here, but he's happy. That's what's important.''

Syracuse loses two key performers in fifth-year transfers Andrew White, the team's top scorer (18.5), and point guard John Gillon. Also departing are forward Tyler Roberson, who was relegated to a minor role during the season because of his inconsistent play, and center Dajuan Coleman, who played in only 17 games in the final year of his injury-plagued career.

Up in the air is the future of star forward Tyler Lydon, who was recruited by Hopkins and was very close to him. Although posts on social media indicated that Lydon had signed with an agent, Boeheim said Monday afternoon that he had not been notified.

The season, which began with the Orange ranked in The AP Top 25, came to an abrupt end on Saturday in an 85-80 loss at home to Ole Miss in the second round of the NIT. Syracuse was the top seed, which likely meant just one more victory during the season would have landed the Orange in the NCAA Tournament.

''It's a season where we did some great things,'' said Boeheim, who agreed to a contract extension on Sunday after Hopkins' departure was announced. ''We had some great moments.''

Those moments included wins at home over Florida State, Virginia and Duke when all three were ranked in the top 10 of the AP poll.

There also were too many forgettable moments - a 33-point home loss to St. John's, the worst setback in the Carrier Dome under Boeheim, and a 15-point loss at Boston College to start the Atlantic Coast Conference portion of the schedule.

Both losses were mirror images of what happened against Ole Miss (15 of 32 makes from 3-point range) and others in a season that ended with five nonconference losses and the most losses in Boeheim's 41-year career - too many enemy long balls swishing the net.

''It's just a microcosm of our season,'' Boeheim said. ''You have to guard the shooters. We haven't done that all year. We never stopped the other team's best shooter.''

The 6-foot-9 Lydon emerged as a bona fide star as a freshman in 2015-16 with a strong perimeter game and shot-blocking ability inside while playing center and both forward positions. He added 20 pounds of muscle in the offseason and averaged 13.2 points and a team-best 8.6 rebounds per game this past season.

In his two years in Orange, Lydon also made nearly 40 percent of his 3-point attempts. If he doesn't return, those are big shoes to fill.

Syracuse has received commitments from 6-3 point guard Howard Washington and 6-8 forward Oshae Brissett, who both play at Athlete Institute in Ontario, Canada, and from 6-9 power forward Bourama Sidibe of St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, New Jersey.

The Orange had a solid recruiting class last year that included guard Tyus Battle, 6-10 forward Taurean Thompson, and 6-8 forward Matthew Moyer. Battle emerged as a star as a freshman and Thompson displayed a silky offensive touch that bodes well for the future, while Moyer redshirted. Add point guard Frank Howard, whom Boeheim called his best outside defender, and 7-2 center Paschal Chukwu (he underwent eye surgery in December and did not play again) and the Orange has a decent nucleus.

Boeheim said he planned to add another assistant to fill the void left by Hopkins' departure. At least there will be continuity at head coach.

Five NCAA tournament betting trends to follow into the Sweet 16

The Midwest Region of the NCAA tournament bracket has produced an 11-0-1 Over/Under mark so far in the Big Dance, averaging 155 points per game.

The final whistle has blown on the opening weekend of the NCAA tournament and it’s only a four-day break until the action starts up again. Before looking to the Sweet 16 matchups, here’s a quick recap of the biggest betting storylines from the past weekend:

                            ACC set to cold

The Atlantic Coast Conference is to college basketball what the Southeastern Conference is to college football. That’s why it surprised no one the tournament committee placed more teams from the ACC (nine) than any other conference in the Big Dance.

Those nine teams went a collective 99-14 straight up and 52-38-1 against the spread in non-conference games this season (some of those games did not have odds). Those same teams went 7-8 SU and 2-13 ATS in the opening rounds of the tournament.

The North Carolina Tar Heels are the only team from the ACC remaining in the tournament and they needed a 12-0 run in the final four minutes to finish off Arkansas Sunday.

The Heels are co-favorites with Kansas to win the tournament (+450) but will have to beat Butler and the winner of Kentucky-UCLA just to make it to the Final Four.

                            Over the top

Many books and sports betting reporters detailed how Vegas and online books enjoyed a winning weekend from the betting public. One thing the books would like a do-over on are the totals for the opening rounds.

The Over went 23-9 in the Round of 64 thanks in large part to the results in the Midwest Region. The Over went 11-0-1 in Kansas’ region with an average of 155 points scored per game.

The four teams remaining in the Midwest are shooting a collective 42 percent from 3-point land and 51.8 percent from the field during the tournament. Oddsmakers set the Purdue-Kansas total at 156.5 the highest Over/Under number for the Boilermakers this season.

The Big 12 has also been a boon for Over bettors, with all 10 of the NCAA games involving Big 12 members going Over the total. Kansas, Baylor and West Virginia remain in the Big Dance with totals of 156.5, 137.5, and 148.5 respectively for their regional semifinal games.

                            Talk the chalk

The opening week of the NCAA tournament is known for some sizable pointspreads when top seeds take on those in the No. 13, No. 14 and No. 15 category. Double-digits favorites stumbled out of the block on the opening Thursday but righted the ship Friday, but the big betting chalk is just 6-9 ATS heading into the Sweet 16. Now that we're down to the tournament elite, bettors won't likely see another double-digit spread the rest of March.

They will, however, see plenty of slim spreads - like the lines bouncing around pick'em for matchups such as Michigan vs. Oregon and UCLA vs. Kentucky. Florida is also a small favorite against Wisconsin, current giving the Badgers two points. Favorites of 2.5 points or less are 9-4 SU and 8-5 ATS so far in the Big Dance, covering 61.5 percent of the time.

                            Bad beats

Tom Petty said even the losers get lucky sometimes. Southern Cal and Oklahoma State backers must know what the front man from the Heartbreakers was talking about.

Both teams were on the fortuitous end of late-game garbage points. Oklahoma State trailed Michigan by four points with 3.7 seconds left to play. Oklahoma State guard Jawun Evans brought the ball up and launched a shot from at least four feet behind the 3-point arc.

The ball splashed through the net as time expired. Michigan players raised their arms in triumph while UM backers reached for their handkerchiefs.

Southern Cal was the comeback king in the first two rounds of the tournament and it looked like the Trojans were going to pull off another come-from-behind win against the 5.5-point favored Baylor Bears. The Trojans grabbed their first second-half lead when Chimezie Metu finished at the rim to make the score 65-63 with 6:13 left to play.

Baylor went on a 19-9 run and carried a 6-point lead into the final seconds. De’Anthony Melton missed an off-balance leaner from deep but the ball bounced softly to Metu. The big man used one hand and volleyed in an uncontested put-back. The buzzer-beating changed the score from 82-76 to 82-78, meaning the Bears failed to cover the 5.5-point spread.

But, for every bad beat there’s an amazing win. Let's hope you were on the positive - and profitable - side of these decisions.

                            Update on Outstanding Player

Duke wasn’t just the pre-tourney favorite to win the national championship. The team also boasted three of the Top 15 players with the shortest odds to win the Most Outstanding Player Award.

Duke’s ousting also means Luke Kennard (+800), Grayson Allen (+1200) and Jayson Tatum (+1600) are all no longer in contention for the honor.

The only other players to drop out who had odds before the tournament are Villanova’s Josh Hart (+1000), Louisville’s Donovan Mitchell (+2200), FSU’s Dwayne Bacon (+4000), Notre Dame’s Bonzi Colson (+6600), SMU’s Semi Ojeyele (+6600), Virginia’s London Perrantes (+6600) and Oklahoma State’s Jawan Evans (+20,000).

Here are the latest MOP prop odds (from Sportsbook.ag):

                            Frank Mason III (Kansas) +750

NCAA Sweet 16 Returnees: Swimming With The Sharks

With the 2017 NCAA Tournament entering the SWEET 16 round, let's take a different perspective in analyzing the teams that have arrived.

This one pertains specifically to teams that are returning to the SWEET 16 for the 2nd straight year.

Do these experienced teams perform with aplomb or do they bomb? It all depends on the situation.

                              Let's take a peek.

                              ALL HANDS ON DECK

Unlike the last two years when half a dozen teams each returned to round of 32 this season, only five make a return visit this season. They include Gonzaga, Kansas, North Carolina, Oregon and Wisconsin.

According to our database, since 1992, teams making a right-back appearance in the SWEET 16 are 80-51 SU but only 58-70-3 ATS in this round of the tourney.

The cut-line, however, is often times the situation surrounding the game.

                              Check out the examples below.

                              NOT QUITE A 10

Looking at it from a varied perspective, SWEET 16 returnees seem to struggle when arriving off a win of less than 10 points, going just 33-27 SU and 23-35-2 ATS.

This year finds four of the five returnees, Gonzaga, North Carolina, Oregon and Wisconsin coming up short in the gene pool.

And making matters worse, if any of these sweet tomatoes sport a high profile public-loving win percentage of .790 or greater on the season they fall to 11-22-1 ATS.

Not particularly good news for the Zags, the Tar Heels, or the Ducks.

                              HOT DIGGETY DOG

One of the major roles Sweet 16 Returnees will respond to, however, is when they are cast into an underdog position.

Simply put, Sweet 16 Returnees cast into a Rodney Dangerfield lack of respect role of an underdog of 8 or less points are 16-11-1 ATS. That alone pulls Oregon and Wisconsin off the hook outlined above when they take on Michigan and Florida, respectively.

Better yet, if they are taking facing a sub .830 opponent in this role they win 62% of the time on the scoreboard, going 8-5 SU and 9-3-1 ATS.

                              Go Ducks!

                              SEEDY DEVELOPMENT

As expected, #1 and #2 seeds fare the best in Sweet 16 games as returnees, going 58-17 SU combined. To the spread, however, they are just 37-37-1 ATS, including 12-16-1 ATS as favorites of 6 or fewer points (read: Gonzaga and Kansas).

Meanwhile, the same Sweet 16 Returnee No. 1 and No. 2 seeds that are favored by 6 or fewer points are just 2-8-1 ATS in these games when taking on .800 or greater foes. Once again, this is not good news for the Zags or the Jayhawks.

Make no mistake, when it comes to handicapping teams in the SWEET 16, the winners will likely be the better-qualified teams that have 'been there-and-done that.'

Or those who know how to keep a ship afloat, if you know what I mean...

                                March 21, 2017

The 2017 NCAA Tournament field has been dwindled down from 68 schools to 16 who are still dreaming of cutting the nets down in Phoenix.

Kansas, one of the three No. 1 seeds that advanced to their respective region semifinals, is listed as a 4/1 favorite to win the national title at Sportsbook.ag.

North Carolina has the second-shortest odds (+450, risk $100 to win $450).

However, UNC is the only ACC school with life. In a year the league earned nine NCAA bids and was mentioned by many as the best conference in college basketball history, it endured a disastrous first weekend.

Xavier beat FSU by 25 points in Orlando without its best player in uniform. Florida destroyed Virginia, limiting the Wahoos to just 39 points in a 26-point pimpslap. Michigan clipped Louisville, while West Virginia beat Notre Dame by 12.

Michigan trounced Miami by 20. Wisconsin took out Virginia Tech by double digits.

Surely Duke, fresh off its four-day run to win the ACC Tournament last weekend in Brooklyn, would be able to hang on to a seven-point halftime lead over South Carolina late Sunday night? Right?

Wrong. South Carolina dropped 65 points on Duke in the second half as UNC fans roared their approval inside Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, S.C. The Gamecocks are in the Sweet 16 for the first time in their program’s history after winning an 88-81 decision as seven-point underdogs. They hooked up money-line backers with a big +280 return.

When Frank Martin was hired away from Kansas State by (‘the other’) USC, I felt it was a home-run hire (and still do). However, I have been surprised it’s taken Martin this long to get to the NCAA Tournament. But the patience has paid off in Year 5 of the Martin’s Era in Columbia. It was his seniors – Sindarius Thornwell and Duane Notice – who were the difference against the Blue Devils, who committed a season-high 18 turnovers.

Thornwell bullied his way to 24 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Notice made 6-of-8 shots from the field, including 2-of-4 from downtown, on his way to a 17-point effort. Notice also had four rebounds and three steals. Chris Silva dominated the paint, producing 17 points, 10 boards and two blocked shots.

North Carolina nearly met the same fate as Duke hours earlier at the same venue. UNC had allowed a 17-point first-half lead get away to Arkansas, which was hunting its first Sweet 16 appearance since Nolan Richardson’s iconic tenure in Fayetteville.

The Razorbacks led 65-60 with less than three minutes remaining, but the Tar Heels closed the game on a 12-0 run to sneak into the Sweet 16 for the 35th time. Gamblers who were holding +800 money-line tickets on the Hogs were left immensely disappointed.

Wisconsin sent the defending champs out of the bracket. Like I said in my Bracket Analysis column on Selection Sunday, Jay Wright had to be miffed with a team like the Badgers being seeded eighth, especially since Villanova was the Tournament’s No. 1 overall seed. Minnesota was a No. 5 seed even though Wisconsin’s veteran-laden squad beat it twice, including a 66-49 spanking in Madison.

Greg Gard’s team captured a 65-62 win over Villanova thanks to multiple defensive stops in the final minute. The Badgers advance to the Madison Square Garden in New York City, where they’ll face Florida in a 4/8 matchup in Friday’s late game. The winner of Wisconsin-UF will get the winner of South Carolina vs. Baylor.

Most spots have the Gators favored by 1.5 or two points. Mike White’s first NCAA Tournament appearance has consisted of a pair of wins by double-digit margins. UF broke open a one-point halftime lead in the second half to put it on East Tennessee State, 80-65.

As previously noted, UVA went down next at the hands of Florida. UF is in the East Region semifinals despite the shooting woes of leading scorer KeVaughn Allen, who went 3-of-21 of the field and 1-for-13 from 3-point range in the first weekend. To his credit, though, he had five assists without a turnover and three steals.

Let’s also note that Allen liked MSG back in November when he dropped 21 points on Duke in a losing effort. Allen drained 8-of-12 shots, including 3-of-5 from long distance.

The other region semifinal in NYC will feature Baylor against South Carolina. Most spots have the Bears favored by 3.5 with the total in the 135-136 range.

(Quick Thought: If you took a look at any of my Tip Sheets for last week, you saw how I pointed out teams to which the ‘Fresh Legs Theory’ applied. This notion refers to teams who lose in the first game of their conference tournament, and therefore don’t extend energy galore the week beforehand. Three of the four teams in NYC (UF, S-Carolina and Baylor), in addition to Kansas, Butler and Purdue, all had ‘Fresh Legs.’ Rhode Island, a team that had to really to exert itself the prior week, ran out of gas in the Round of 32.)

Kentucky gives the SEC three teams in the Sweet 16. John Calipari’s team swatted away two straight Wichita State shots at winning time to survive with a 65-62 win, although the Shockers took the cash as 4.5-point underdogs.

UK will take on UCLA in a rematch of an early December game at Rupp Arena, where the Bruins won 97-92 as double-digit underdogs. These teams will meet in Memphis, where the Bruins were eliminated from the South Region semifinals by Florida three years ago.

As Steve Alford takes his team to the Sweet 16, Indiana’s interest in bringing back one of its most legendary players to IU will engulf the national headlines. Alford’s son Bryce is a senior, while freshmen Lonzo Ball and T.J. Leaf are guaranteed to be one-and-doners. Alford led IU to the school’s last national title in 1987 and was a four-time All Big Ten selection.

IU fired Tom Crean last week after nine up-and-down seasons. Alford is a Midwest guy from New Castle, Indiana, who has spent more than a decade in New Mexico and UCLA. He was on the hot seat coming into this year, while he was never really appreciated at UNM or Iowa. Like Roy Williams at Kansas being courted (again) by UNC in 2003 when the Jayhawks eventually lost in the finals to ‘Melo, McNamara and the ‘Cuse, this story won’t go away as long as the Bruins have a pulse.

The West Region semifinals will be contested in San Jose, where top-seeded Gonzaga will collide with West Virginia. The other matchup will be Arizona versus Xavier. The Wildcats pulled away from Saint Mary’s in the second half and covered as 4.5-point ‘chalk.’ Along with Gonzaga’s Mark Few, UA’s Sean Miller are looking to get their first Final Fours.

Gonzaga allowed an 18-point halftime lead to get trimmed to five late in the second half. In fact, Northwestern should have been given bucket from a goaltend that would’ve cut the deficit to three. The officials inexplicably failed to make the call, prompting Chris Collins to garner a technical foul. Instead of a three-point deficit with momentum galore on Northwestern’s side, the ‘Zags converted both free throws, extending their lead to seven and turning the mojo back their way.

Gonzaga would finish the deal to advance, but the Wildcats covered the spread as double-digit ‘dogs.

WVU hit all five of its 3-point launches in the second half to pull away for an 83-71 win over Notre Dame, denying the Fighting Irish a shot at getting to a third consecutive Elite Eight. The Mountaineers are three-point underdogs to Gonzaga, while ‘Zona is favored by 7.5 points against the Musketeers.

Purdue stopped Vermont, the team that brought the nation’s longest winning streak into the Tourney, in the Round of 64. Then the Boilermakers, who are in their first Sweet 16 in seven years, lost a 19-point lead to red-hot Iowa St, only to recover at crunch time and win an 80-76 decision as one-point ‘chalk.’

Matt Painter’s team will square off against top-seeded Kansas in the Midwest Region. KU got 14 of Josh Jackson’s 23 points in the second half to break open a tight game against Michigan State and win 90-70 in a misleading final score. The Jayhawks took the cash as eight-point favorites. KU will have a decided advantage over Purdue because it will be playing in Kansas City at the Sprint Center for the fifth time this year. Most spots have the Boilermakers installed as five-point underdogs.

The other game in KC will be Oregon vs. Michigan. The Wolverines are short favorites after dusting Oklahoma St and Louisville. Moritz Wagner scored 26 points against the Cardinals, while Derrick Walton tallied 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists without a turnover.

Let’s shift back to Memphis, where the UCLA-UK winner will get the survivor of UNC-Butler. Yes, the Bulldogs are in yet another Sweet 16 after sending Middle Tennessee home. The Tar Heels are favored by 7.5 points.

The rest of the future odds (remember, we noted KU and UNC at 4/1 and +450 earlier) look like this: Gonzaga (5/1), Arizona (+550), UCLA (7/1), UF (12/1), UK (12/1), Baylor (15/1), Oregon (15/1), Wisconsin (15/1), Michigan (18/1), WVU (18/1), Purdue (20/1), Butler (50/1), South Carolina (50/1) and Xavier (100/1).

-- LSU has hired Will Wade away from VCU. My first reaction: I like it. Wade has taken the Rams to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances since taking over for Shaka Smart. VCU advanced to the Round of 32 last year and gave Oklahoma, a team that went to the Final Four, fits for 40 minutes. With that said, we’ll point out the LSU’s AD Joe Alleva paid big bucks to a search firm to do his job for him in terms of this coaching search.

-- Hat Tip to Nick Duncan, the heavy-set Aussie who saw his outstanding collegiate career end at Illinois on Monday night in the second round of the NIT. Duncan can play on my team any day. He was the heart and soul of Boise State’s teams over the last four years, two of which lost in the First Four of the NCAA Tournament. Duncan drained 3’s, lots of ‘em for a big man. He dove for loose balls and took charges like it was his job – because it was. Duncan set vicious screens and rarely missed a box out. The Broncos will miss him.

-- UT-Arlington is in the NIT quarterfinals after easily handling BYU (in Provo!) and staying undefeated at home with last night’s win over Akron. The Mavericks, who are playing without their second-leading scorer, get to stay at home and host Cal State Bakersfield on Wednesday night for the right to go to MSG in NYC next week.
