No. 8 Georgia vs. No. 9 Tennessee (SECN, 1:00 p.m. ET)

Georgia has a slim shot at making the NCAA Tournament at 18-13, as the Bulldogs need a solid run in the SEC Tournament. The first test for UGA is Tennessee, as the Volunteers lost five of their final seven games of the regular season. Tennessee snapped a three-game skid by overcoming a 16-point deficit to shock Alabama in the regular season finale, 59-54 as 2 ½-point favorites. In spite of losing their season finale at Arkansas, Georgia posted a 9-2 ATS record as an underdog in SEC play, but put together a 1-6 ATS mark as a conference favorite. Tennessee looks to avenge a 76-75 home loss to Georgia as 4 ½-point favorites in mid-February, as the Bulldogs have won three straight meetings with the Volunteers.

No. 5 Alabama vs. No. 12 Mississippi State (SECN, 3:30 p.m. ET)

Mississippi State picked up consecutive wins for the first time in nearly two months after knocking out LSU on Wednesday, 79-52 in the opening round of the SEC tournament. The Bulldogs face Alabama, looking to beat the Crimson Tide for the first time in three tries this season after losing the first two meetings by 10 and 9 points. The Tide jumped out to an impressive 6-2 record to begin SEC play, but Alabama put together a choppy finish by losing six of its final 10 games. Alabama’s defense has played well down the stretch by allowing 60 points or less in five of the past six contests, resulting in five UNDERS.

    No. 7 Vanderbilt vs. No. 10 Texas A&M (SECN, 7:00 p.m. ET)

Vanderbilt began SEC play at 3-5, but the Commodores won seven of their final 10 conference games to own a 10-8 league record. The Commodores pulled off a sweep of Florida, while covering their final six contests. Vandy faces an underachieving Texas A&M squad as the Aggies finished at 8-10 inside the conference following a 13-5 record last season. The Aggies won three of their final five games, but the season was capped off by a 71-63 defeat to regular season league champion Kentucky. Vandy pulled off the season sweep of A&M, including a 14-point rout as 4 ½-point underdogs at College Station in late January.

No. 6 Mississippi vs. No. 14 Missouri (SECN, 9:30 p.m. ET)

Missouri wasn’t ready to end its tumultuous season as the Tigers erased a late six-point deficit in overtime to stun Auburn, 86-83 as seven-point underdogs. The Tigers look for consecutive wins for the first time since December as they face Mississippi, a team Mizzou hung with twice in close losses. The latest matchup came in Oxford in late February as Ole Miss edged Missouri, 80-77 as 11-point home favorites. The Rebels won seven of their final 10 games, although all three of those losses came away from Oxford. Mississippi has lost in each of its last SEC tournament openers, while facing Mizzou in this tournament for the first time since a 64-62 victory in 2013.

      No. 8 Arizona State

      No. 1 Oregon vs. No. 8 Arizona State (Pac-12, 3:00 p.m. ET)

The Ducks likely didn't mind watching Michael Humphrey knock down the late jumper that sent Stanford into OT against Arizona State, capping a substantial comeback after it trailed all afternoon. The Sun Devils overcame the collapse and imposed their will in the extra five minutes, finishing with a 98-88 win thanks to a 17-point OT. They ended up nearly becoming the second team to get to the century mark in a Pac-12 Tournament, finishing with the third-highest total in the event's history. They torched the Cardinal in three wins this season, but must now deal with an Oregon defense that has the league's best. After watching ASU's execution, the Ducks shouldn't be caught looking ahead. If they do, they're guilty of short memories, since a flat effort nearly resulted in the end of their now 42-game home-winning streak on Feb. 3 in a 71-70 win over the Sun Devils. Sure, they were guilty of looking ahead to an Arizona game where they clobbered the 'Cats, but Arizona State would've prevailed if Dillon Brooks hadn't come to the rescue with 12 straight points down the stretch, erasing a deficit with 1:32 remaining. ASU could be dangerous to Oregon's hopes of earning a No. 1 seed if Obinna Oleka follows up Wednesday's career game (27 points, 13 rebounds) with a big night. He was just 2-for-11 in Eugene and wrestled with foul trouble. Totals on ASU's games have been set at over 150 points in 15 of the last 17. The over has prevailed in the last four Ducks games.

      No. 4 Utah

      No. 5 California
      Overall: 20-11 SU, 13-18 ATS
      Totals: 14-17 O/U

      No. 4 Utah vs. No. 5 California (Pac-12, 5:30 p.m. ET)

Even though the Utes are the higher-seeded team here, the Bears are higher up on the bubble totem pole. Neither resume currently looks good enough to get in, so both need to survive this and find a way into the Pac-12 final to have a chance at an at-large. Besides breaking out of a run where it lost five of six contests, Cal didn't do a lot to help its case by struggling with last-place Oregon State. Its' 67-62 win came woefully short of covering the 14-point spread, continuing an unispiring run. The Utes did close the season on a three-game winning streak, which included a 74-44 conquest of Cal in Salt Lake City on Saturday. Even if there weren't bubble implications, you would think the Bears would be interested in this rematch simply for personal pride. The win was Utah's largest over the Bears since 1940 thanks to a 34-10 first-half run caused by Cal's complacency in settling for jumpers and not defending. The Bears were held to season lows in every offensive category you can think of and then went out and scored 46 in a loss at Buffalo. Cal's Ivan Rabb will again have to deal with Kyle Kuzma and David Collette, who held him to 0-for-3 shooting in the loss. Rabb, a 6-foot-11 potential lottery pick, recorded his seventh double-double over the last 10 games against the Beavers, while scoring wing Jabari Bird, who shot 2-for-7 against the Utes, led the way with 20 points. Maybe they'll have a pulse this time. These schools met in last year's semis in a game that the Utes pulled out in OT behind current Toronto Raptors lottery pick Jakob Poeltl. The under has prevailed in five of Cal's last eight, but a streak of three straight was snapped on Wednesday. The under is 5-2 in Utah's last seven.

      No. 2 Arizona

      No. 7 Colorado
      Overall: 19-13 SU, 11-19-1 ATS
      Totals: 13-18 O/U

      No. 2 Arizona vs No. 7 Colorado (Pac-12, 9:00 p.m. ET)

When these schools met in last year's quarters, this was the 4-5 game, so it's evident what directions these programs have headed in. Arizona is playing to try and get on the national 1-seed line in the NCAAs. The Buffs barely got here, putting the inconsistency that has been on display all season right back out there in case anyone had missed it. They trailed Washington State by as many as 19 points before rallying in the second half and pulling away behind seniors Derrick White and Xavier Johnson, who combined for 45 points. White will definitely test the Arizona guards, looking to make up for a 3-for-7 night in the only meeting against the 'Cats this season back on Jan. 8. Coming off a 35-point night at ASU, the Pac-12's second-leading scorer was shut down by Kadeem Allen, who scored 18 points, hit all three of his 3-point shots and didn't commit a turnover in outplaying one of the Pac-12's best. Allen is among the league's top defenders, but typically not as efficient a ballhandler or shooter. He missed a couple of games with a dislocated pinky but has since returned for his full workload. Allonzo Trier was still ineligible when these teams squared off, but has since been reinstated and is playing his best ball of the season, averaging 23.3 points over his last four games. He'll be a major factor alongside special 7-foot freshman Lauri Markkanen, who helped supply the offense for the 82-73 win by shooting 5-for-6 on 3-pointers. Suspended Buffs freshman guard Bryce Peters remained sidelined in the first game of this tournament. The under has connected in five of the last six Arizona games.

      No. 3 UCLA
      Overall: 28-3 SU, 16-15 ATS

      No. 6 USC
      Overall: 24-8 SU, 15-16 ATS
      Totals: 15-15-1 O/U

No. 3 UCLA vs. No. 6 USC (ESPN, 11:30 p.m. ET)

When these neighbors last squared off, the Bruins blew off some steam. UCLA hung a 102-70 rout on the Trojans at Pauley Pavilion, piling on down the stretch with alley-oops, Showtime-style. Lonzo Ball was on the business end of the exclamation points in a win that ended a four-game losing streak against Southern Cal. Included in that run came last year's Pac-12 Tournament first round game where the Trojans exhibited little sympathy in a 95-71 win. Times sure have changed. Behind freshmen Ball and T.J. Leaf, the Bruins haven become one of the nation's top teams and undeniably the most prolific on the offensive side of the ball, where they average 91.3 points per game. The Trojans did already catch them once, beating UCLA at its own game by hitting 14 3-pointers in a 84-76 home upset that remains the bright spot on their at-large resume. Ball committed seven turnovers, while Leaf and senior Bryce Alford combined to shoot 5-for-17. This would be an immense win for the Trojans, and not just because it would wrap up an NCAA bid. Eliminating Ball from what will be his lone Pac-12 Tournament in a year where the Bruins have taken over the city and dwarfed the strides USC has made under Andy Enfield would eternally give them scoreboard, so there's that. Jordan McLaughlin, a sophomore who was USC's big fish when he arrived on campus, must have a strong performance if the Trojans are to notch this upset. It picked up a third straight under in the first round, but the over is 6-1 in USC's last seven games not played against the Huskies. UCLA has seen the under connect in seven of its last eight, with the lone outlier coming thanks to surpassing the century mark against USC.

      • Bubble Watch: Tough day for ACC bubble teams
        March 9, 2017

NEW YORK (AP) Jim Boeheim usually says what's on his mind and it doesn't matter if the topic is his team's chances at making the NCAA Tournament's field of 68.

Syracuse lost to Miami 62-57 on Wednesday in the second round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. It was a win that would have improved the Orange's resume. It was a loss that may mean no NCAA Tournament.

''It's up to them. My opinion doesn't matter,'' Boeheim said, referring to the tournament selection committee. ''Every coach in the country that's on the bubble thinks his team should get in.''

What will hurt Syracuse is its lack of road wins and an RPI of 75 but the Orange did go 6-7 against the top 50. Last year, the Orange had an RPI in the 70s and they were invited and went all the way to the Final Four.

The ACC Tournament saw two other bubble teams lose a game that would have pretty much locked up an at-large bid.

Clemson lost to Duke 79-72 and Wake Forest lost to Virginia Tech 99-90.

Clemson won an opening-round game to bolster its record but the Tigers really needed a win over a team like Duke. They have an RPI of 63 and were winless in seven games against the top 25.

''We won six (ACC) games. We probably needed to win eight or 10,'' Clemson coach Brad Brownell said. ''That's obviously why today's game was so important for our team. If we could have got today's game, then I think we have a better chance, and then maybe one more.''

Wake Forest made a late-season surge with a win over Louisville and another at Virginia Tech. The Demon Deacons still have an RPI of 31 but do they have enough impressive wins, only going 1-7 against the top 25?

''I think some losses early in the season kind of like hurt us a little bit, but I think down the line during ACC play we picked up a few big wins, especially against -- upsetting at Louisville and now Virginia Tech,'' guard Brandon Childress said. ''Being 9-9 in ACC play, I think that helped us out a lot. Hopefully, we get in. If not, we've still got to be ready to play no matter if it's NIT or in the NCAA Tournament.''

In the Pac-12, California helped itself with an opening-round 67-62 win over Oregon State. The Golden Bears have an RPI of 55 but they are 0-6 against the top 25.

In the Big East, Xavier beat DePaul 75-64 in the opening round, a win that keeps the Musketeers alive and sends them to face Butler, a win that would certainly impress the committee. Xavier had a late-season six-game losing streak that followed the loss to a knee injury of point guard Edmond Sumner.

        • Top-seeded Purdue will play motivated foe in B10 tournament
          March 9, 2017

A look at things to watch in the Big Ten before the conference tournament semifinals Saturday

          GAME OF THE WEEK:
Regular-season champion Purdue will play its Big Ten Tournament opener on Friday against a very motivated opponent, be it Michigan or Illinois. The Wolverines and Illini, the Nos. 8 and 9 seeds, play on Thursday after splitting their regular-season games. Michigan (20-11) has closed strongly and should be safely in the NCAA Tournament field. If the Wolverines can beat Illinois, they'll be able to improve their NCAA seeding by knocking off a Boilermakers team they beat 82-70 on Feb. 25. The Illini (18-13), if they get past Michigan, would help their chances of sneaking into the NCAA Tournament if they avenge a 23-point loss to the Boilermakers in January.

LOOKING AHEAD: Ohio State coach Thad Matta and Penn State's Patrick Chambers got statements of support from their athletic directors earlier this week. Nebraska's Tim Miles did as well, right after the Cornhuskers' 76-67 overtime loss to the Nittany Lions on Wednesday. Athletic director Shawn Eichorst tweeted that he looked forward to next season under Miles' leadership and that the future is bright. That leaves two coaches with uncertain futures. Indiana's Tom Crean, the 2016 conference coach of the year after leading his team to the regular-season title, is getting static after the Hoosiers dropped to a tie for 10th place. Illinois' John Groce appeared to have saved his job with a late run in which the Illini won five of six. That was before a road loss to last-place Rutgers on Saturday, and now it might take an NCAA bid to bring him back.

          INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Six schools have won the Big Ten Tournament. Michigan State has claimed a conference-best five tournament titles. Ohio State has won four, Wisconsin three, Illinois and Iowa two apiece and Purdue one. ... Conference player of the year Caleb Swanigan of Purdue needs one double-double to tie Jerry Lucas (three times) and Brad Sellers for the Big Ten's single-season record (26). ... Wisconsin won at least 12 Big Ten games for the eighth consecutive season, the longest active streak in the conference.

          PLAYER TO WATCH:
Michigan has won nine of its last 14 games, and senior guard Derrick Walton Jr. is a big reason. He's averaged 17.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.4 assists over that stretch, with five straight games with 20-plus points and four double-doubles.

          ON THE WOMEN'S SIDE:
Maryland (30-2) won the Big Ten Tournament for the third straight year is probably is looking at being a No. 2 seed for the NCAA Tournament. Four or five other teams also are in position for NCAA bids. Ohio State (27-5) knocked off Maryland in the regular season and was the top seed in the conference tournament. Michigan State (21-11) won four of its last five regular-season games and made it to the Big Ten semifinals, where it gave Maryland a competitive game. Purdue (22-12) helped itself by reaching the conference championship game. Michigan (22-9) has lost four of its last five and is on the bubble.

                      • Top 25 roundup: TCU stuns No. 1 Kansas
                        March 9, 2017

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Freshman guard Desmond Bane scored a team-high 16 points as unranked TCU stunned No. 1 Kansas 85-82 Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament at Sprint Center.

With the scored tied 82-82, Bane was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 2.5 seconds remaining by the Jayhawks' Svi Mykhailiuk. Bane made all three free throws for the decisive points.

The win enhanced TCU's chances of landing an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament, although the Horned Frogs may need to win the conference tournament to get in. They face Iowa State in the semifinals.

The stunner marked just the second time in Big 12 tournament history the Jayhawks were ousted in their first tournament game. An eight-game win streak they used to close Big 12 play and capture the league title by four games was snapped.

Senior guard Frank Mason, the Big 12 player of the year, scored 29 points to pace Kansas. The Jayhawks, however, missed freshman guard Josh Jackson, who served a one-game disciplinary suspension. Sophomore guard Devonte' Graham missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer.

                        No. 2 Villanova 108, St. John's 67

NEW YORK -- Donte DiVincenzo made 5 of 6 3-point shots and scored a career-high 25 points, and Kris Jenkins added 24 as the top-seeded Wildcats had little problem advancing to the semifinals of the Big East tournament at Madison Square Garden.

Villanova advanced to face fifth-seeded Seton Hall in the semifinals on Friday.

Bashir Ahmed and Marcus LoVett led St. John's (14-19) with 12 points apiece. The Red Storm haven't moved to the semifinals since 2000.

                        No. 5 Oregon 80, Arizona State 57

LAS VEGAS -- Pac-12 player of the year Dillon Brooks scored 22 points and guard Tyler Dorsey had 21 as the Ducks pulled away from the Sun Devils in the second half in a Pac-12 tournament quarterfinal at T-Mobile Arena.

Other than guard Torian Graham, Arizona State went cold from the field. Graham scored 32 points, hitting 11 of 24 shots from the field, including 7 of 16 from 3-point range. The rest of the team made only three shots after halftime.

                        No. 6 North Carolina 78, Miami 53

NEW YORK -- Isaiah Hicks led four players in double figures with 19 points as the top-seeded Tar Heels cruised in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament at the Barclays Center. The sixth-ranked Tar Heels (27-6) advanced to the semifinals on Friday, where they will meet Duke.

North Carolina won for the seventh time in its last nine games and avenged a 77-62 loss to Miami in the regular season. Justin Jackson, the ACC Player of the Year, scored 12 points, Joel Berry II added 11 points with five assists.

Bruce Brown, one of Miami's four true freshmen, led the Hurricanes (21-11) with 21 points.

                        No. 14 Duke 81, No. 10 Louisville 77

NEW YORK -- The fifth-seeded Blue Devils knocked off the fourth-seeded Cardinals in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament to earn a shot at North Carolina in Friday's semifinals.

Duke (25-8) trailed by as many as 12 in the second half before turning to Jayson Tatum and Luke Kennard, who scored 25 and 24 points, respectively. Kennard knocked down two huge 3-pointers late in the game, including one with 4:50 to play to give the Blue Devils a 73-70 advantage.

Louisville (24-8) struggled down the stretch and didn't make a shot for the final 3:43 of the game. Deng Adel led the Cardinals with 21 points while Quentin Snider added 15.

                        No. 11 West Virginia 63, Texas 53

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Mountaineers overcame a sluggish offensive night to defeat the Longhorns in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament. West Virginia will face either No. 9 Baylor or Kansas State in the semis.

The 63 points was the fourth-lowest point total of the season for West Virginia (25-7). Texas (11-21) finished 15 points below its season average.

Jevon Carter led West Virginia with 21 points. Texas got 13 points from Andrew Jones.

No. 16 Florida State 74, Virginia Tech 68

NEW YORK -- The Seminoles dominated the smaller Hokies in the low post during a win in the ACC tournament quarterfinals.

Second-seeded Florida State (25-7) moves into the semifinals, where it will face the Notre Dame-Virginia winner. Dwayne Bacon led the Seminoles with 17 points. Jonathan Isaac had 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Seth LeDay led Virginia Tech (22-10) with 22 points and nine rebounds off the bench.

                        Xavier 62, No. 18 Butler 57

NEW YORK -- Trevon Bluiett drained a 17-foot step-back jumper to cap a 23-point performance and provide the Musketeers with a crucial victory over the Bulldogs in the Big East tournament quarterfinals.

Bluiett's basket with 16.5 seconds left snapped a 57-57 tie to fuel a victory that might lift the Musketeers off the NCAA Tournament bubble. Xavier (21-12) has won three straight games following a six-game losing streak. The Musketeers will face either Providence or Creighton on Friday in the semifinals.

Malcolm Bernard contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds for Xavier. Sean O'Mara added 10 points for the Musketeers, who overcame 17 turnovers. Kelan Martin scored 15 points for the second-seeded Bulldogs (23-8).

No. 23 Iowa State 92, Oklahoma State 83

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Monte Morris had 21 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists to lead the Cyclones to a second-round win in the Big 12 tournament.

It was the second time in three games that he was one notch away from a triple-double, finishing a rebound short in the Cyclone's home finale, also against Oklahoma State.

The Cyclones (21-10) shot 7 of 8 from 3-point range in the second half and 12 of 24 for the game. They will face TCU next.

Jawun Evans scored 29 points for the Cowboys (20-12).

                              • Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

                                — QB Mike Glennon gets $15M a year from the Bears; he has a 5-13 record as a starter with the Bucs, before Jameis Winston got there. That means Chicago will release Jay Cutler.

                                — Texans traded QB Brock Osweiler and two draft picks to Cleveland for a 4th-round pick, saving Houston $7M on the 2017 salary cap. Now the Texans need another QB.

                                — Kirk Cousins requested a trade from the Redskins. who appear to be dysfunctional. Interweb said owner Daniel Snyder turned down Cousins’ request.

                                — Eagles signed WR’s Alshon Jeffrey, Torrey Smith to help young QB Carson Wentz.

                                — Former Eagle/Redskin WR DeSean Jackson signed with the Buccaneers.

                                — Browns gave Kenny Britt $32M for four years; I have to laugh. Grabbing WR’s the Rams don’t want is no way to build a ballclub

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Wrapping up the best hoop day of the year…….

Thursday of Champ Week is the best college basketball day of the year. Here is my brief recap: my apologies for any typos, I’m too tired to proofread this.

                                13) Duke 81, Louisville 77— Cardinals were 15-26 on foul line, 4-21 on arc. Strong matchup for the quarterfinals; now Blue Devils play North Carolina tomorrow night- this is only second meeting for those rivals in last 13 ACC tournaments (Duke won last one).

                                12) TCU 85, Kansas 82— Jayhawks’ star Josh Jackson was suspended for this game, now the Horned Frogs move on to the Big 12 semifinals for the first time. Moral of the story; No matter what she did to tick you off, don’t back your vehicle into her car, at least not during the season.

                                11) Iowa State 92, Oklahoma State 83— Cowboys lost last three games, two to ISU and one to Kansas, but still, three losses are three losses. OSU was 0-3 against the Cyclones this season; they’ll be happy to play teams from outside the Big X next week.

                                10) Michigan 75, Illinois 55— Wolverines couldn’t wear their uniforms, because everything that was on their airplane Wednesday was held by the FAA due to the investigation into what caused the accident with the airplane. So, Michigan wore their practice gear- they also flew in from Detroit Thursday morning and went right from the airport to the arena.

                                9) Northwestern 83, Rutgers 61— I’m confused as to how good the Wildcats actually are; they’re going to be in the Field of 68, so I need to figure it out soon. Will they relax and play better once they hear their name called on Selection Sunday?

Wildcats had a 31-0 run in this game. Don’t see many of those.

                                8) San Diego State 87, Boise State 68— Aztecs looked 98% disinterested Wednesday in their OT win against UNLV; they looked like a different set of people in this game. They play in the Mountain West semifinals tonite against Colorado State. Should be a good ballgame.

                                7) Xavier 62, Butler 57— Bulldogs are now 0-4 in Big East tournament; long trip from Indy to New York City. Big win for the Musketeers, who have now won three games in a row.

Big East semifinals: Villanova-Seton Hall and Xavier-Creighton.

                                6) Texas-El Paso 86, Rice 76— Miners wore Texas Western throwback jerseys in this game. A few years ago, they made the movie Glory Road about the Miners’ 1966 NCAA title.

                                5) Marshall 64, Old Dominion 63— Mike D’Antoni’s brother Dan coaches the Thundering Herd; they like to run, just like his brother’s Houston Rockets, but ODU kept this game in the low 60’s before Marshall pulled it out with a free throw with 0:03 left.

                                4) Kansas State 70, Baylor 64— Wildcats et to 20-12, which could be bad news for mid-major bubble teams like Illinois State. Wildcats won two out of three games from Baylor, which is 5-6 in its last 11 games after a 20-1 start.

Big X semifinals: Iowa State-TCU and West Virginia-Kansas State.

                                3) Big West semifinals: Cal-Davis plays Cal State Fullerton, then Cal-Irvine plays Long Beach State. Irvine is the best of the four teams but they’re a very young team.

                                2) Fresno State 65, New Mexico 60— Last year, Bulldogs won their last five regular season games, then won the Mountain West tournament. This season Fresno won its last five regular season games and is now in the MW semis tonight. Rodney Terry is doing good work in Fresno.

1— Duke-Carolina and Arizona-UCLA highlight the great card of games Friday night.
