            • Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

              — Duke and North Carolina have met only once in last 12 ACC tournaments. Duke won 75-58 in 2011 tournament final.

              — Heat 120, Cavaliers 92— Cleveland is 0-8 vs spread on road if they played night before.

              — South Dakota 78, Western Illinois 69 OT— Top seed in Summit League dodges a bullet.

              — Justin Thomas leads the PGA event in Mexico; he had a hole-in-one on 13th hole.

              — Penn 75, Harvard 72— Quakers qualify for Ivy tourney, which is next week on their home court, the Palestra.

              — IUPUI 76, North Dakota State 57- -#7 seed upsets #2 seed in Summit League

              **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a basketball Saturday…..

              13) North Carolina 90, Duke 83— ESPN should add a UNC alum (Brad Daugherty?) to its booth for this game, to even things up a little. I mean, Mike Krzyzewski’s son-in-law calls games for ESPNU. This is a huge rivalry- a little balance would be good.

              12) Kansas 90, Oklahoma State 85— High-level game. Jayhawks had lost previous three visits to Stillwater. Bill Self is an Oklahoma State alum.

              11) Missouri Valley tournament gets the Illinois State-Wichita State final they wanted; would think both teams get into the NCAA’s. These two teams are so much better than the other eight teams in the league. Final should be an excellent game.

              10) Kentucky 71, Texas A&M 63— Wildcats fell behind 25-6, 19-4 in last two games, not a great habit now that it is March.

              9) Charleston 67, James Madison 62— CAA officials breathe a sigh of relief as host team averts an upset, which would’ve killed attendance for the semis and maybe the finals. This tournament has always been held in Richmond or Baltimore, more central locations for the schools.

Odd thing: with 0:08 left in this game and Cougars up a point, one of the refs got a bloody nose, which delayed the game for a few minutes.

              8) Wake Forest 89, Virginia Tech 84— Danny Manning’s Deacons making a case to get in the Field of 68- this is a quality win.

              7) Villanova 81, Georgetown 55— From what you read, not lot of fun to be around the Hoyas’ program these days.

              6) Cal-Irvine 79, Cal-Davis 49— Anteaters avenge earlier loss when Cal-Davis was 35-46 on foul line. Anteaters led this by 18 at the half- they win regular season title and #1 seed at Big West tourney in Anaheim next week.

              5) Tennessee 59, Alabama 54— Vols were down 36-22 at half, won for only second time in their last seven games. Alabama can start selling tickets for the NIT.

              4) St Francis PA 71, Wagner 70— Kid on St Francis hit a really tough 3-pointer that spun around rim couple times before it dropped in at the buzzer. Shooter had man right in his face. Red Flash got the ball at the other end of the court with 0:07.3 left- big road win for them in NEC tourney.

              3) Nevada 85, Colorado State 72— Wolf Pack win Mountain West regular season title and #1 seed in Las Vegas next week. Only one team from this league is getting into NCAA’s, so the next time these teams meet could be a lot more important.

              2) Upsets of the Day: Youngstown State (+12.5) 81, Oakland 80— Cameron Morse scored 34 as the Penguins advance to the Horizon semi-finals. Youngstown’s winning hoop was as bad a defensive play as you’ll ever see- Oakland left a guy all by himself under the basket.

Florida International (+11) 68, UAB 56— Blazers are fading late in year.
              Cal-Santa Barbara (+10) 57, Cal Poly 44
Seton Hall (+8.5) 70, Butler 64— Quality road win for the Pirates.
Milwaukee (+8.5) 43, Valparaiso 41— Valpo’s best player didn’t play; Crusaders are out.

1— Jacksonville State 66, Tenn-Martin 55— JSU coach Harper has won four national titles at lower levels; he also won two C-USA tourneys at Western Kentucky. The guy can coach, and now he has his Gamecocks in March Madness for the first time.

                      • Sunday's Big 10 Tips
                        March 4, 2017

The final Sunday of the regular season in men’s college basketball features a number of great matchups, especially in the Big Ten where teams continue to jockey for position ahead of next week’s conference tournament.

Kicking off the action, the No. 16 Purdue Boilermakers will close things out against Northwestern after previously clinching the Big Ten regular season title. Later in the day, Minnesota will go on the road to square off against No. 22 Wisconsin and Sunday night’s featured matchup pits Michigan against the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

No. 16 Purdue Boilermakers at Northwestern Wildcats (CBS, 4:30 p.m. ET)

                        Opening Odds: Purdue -3 ½, Total 139

                        Betting Matchup

Purdue forged its way to the top of the Big Ten standings with a straight-up 7-1 run in its last eight games while going 4-2-2 against the spread during this same span. The total went OVER 150 points in this past Tuesday’s 86-75 victory against Indiana as an 11-point home favorite and it has gone OVER in three of its last four games. Sophomore forward Caleb Swanigan led the way against the Hoosiers with 21 points and he remains the Boilermakers’ (24-6 SU, 16-9-2 ATS) top scorer this season with 18.6 points per game.

The Wildcats need a win on Sunday and some help to move into one of the top four spots in the conference standings after stumbling down the stretch with a SU 3-5 record in their last eight games. They did cover as two-point home underdogs in Wednesday’s 67-65 victory against Michigan (21-9 SU) to improve to 18-10 ATS this season. Northwestern is averaging 71.6 PPG; however it has failed to score more than 70 points in its last nine contests. It is ranked 32nd in the nation at the other end of the court with a points-allowed average of 64.7 points.

                        Betting Trends

-- The Boilermakers are 1-3-1 ATS in their last five road games and the total has gone OVER in six of their last eight games played on a Sunday.

-- The Wildcats have gone 16-7 ATS in their last 23 games following a SU win and the total has stayed UNDER in six of their last eight home games.

-- Head-to-head in this conference tilt, Purdue has won four of the last six meetings SU including an 80-59 rout on Feb. 1 as a 9 ½-point home favorite. The total stayed UNDER 140 ½ points in that game and it has stayed UNDER in five of the last six meetings.

Minnesota Golden Gophers at No. 22 Wisconsin Badgers (BTN, 6:30 p.m. ET)

                        Opening Odds: Wisconsin -6 ½, Total 132 ½

                        Betting Matchup

Minnesota comes into this matchup tied with the Badgers for second place in the conference standings at 11-6 SU, but it lost the first meeting this season in overtime 78-76 on Jan. 21 as a 4 ½-point home underdog. The Golden Gophers (23-7 SU, 18-10 ATS) are closing things out on a strong note with an eight-game winning streak while going 7-1 ATS. The total has gone OVER in their last seven games. In Thursday’s 88-73 romp against Nebraska as a 7 ½-point home favorite, Minnesota’s leading scorer Nate Mason scored a game-high 25 points. The junior guard is averaging 15.4 PPG this season.

The Badgers have just one SU win in their last six games and they are a costly 1-7 ATS in their last eight outings. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a push in four of their last six games. Wisconsin is now 22-8 SU on the year with a 12-15 record ATS. It comes into this season finale with an 8-5 record ATS on its home court. Wisconsin remains one of the top teams in the nation on defense with a points-allowed average of 62.0, but it has given up more than this in five of its last seven games including 83 points in a recent loss to Ohio State and 84 points in a 10-point setback against Michigan State last Sunday.

                        Betting Trends

Michigan Wolverines at Nebraska Cornhuskers (BTN, 8:00 p.m. ET)

                        Opening Odds Michigan -4 ½, Total 139

                        Betting Matchup

Michigan’s recent loss to Northwestern dropped its record to 1-3 ATS in its last four games as part of an overall record of 11-16 ATS. The loss dropped the Wolverines (19-11) to 9-8 SU in conference play and the total has gone OVER in five of their last seven games. Senior guard Derrick Walton Jr. has led the team in both points (14.4) and assists (4.1) this season. His 15 points in Wednesday’s loss was eighth time in his last 10 games that he eclipsed his scoring average. As a team, the Wolverines are averaging 74.0 PPG.

With just two SU victories in the Cornhuskers’ last eight games, they are well down the list in the Big Ten at 6-11 and 12-17 SU on the year. They have failed to cover in five of those eight games and the total has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in five of their last seven outings. Nebraska’s top scorer this season has been senior guard Tai Webster with 17.5 PPG and he also leads the team in assists (4.0). He was held to 11 points in Thursday’s loss to Minnesota after going just 4-for13 from the field.

                        • Preview: Golden Gophers (23-7) at Badgers (22-8)
                          Date: March 05, 2017 6:00 PM EDT

Senior forward Nigel Hayes and other seniors for No. 22 Wisconsin will mark their final regular-season game when the Badgers host Minnesota on Sunday.

There will be family introductions, career highlight videos and Senior Day festivities to honor Hayes, senior forward Vitto Brown, senior guard Bronson Koenig and senior guard Zak Showalter before and after the game at the Kohl Center.

But the Badgers (22-8, 11-6 in the Big Ten Conference) won't be in much of a mood to celebrate, considering their recent freefall. Wisconsin, which squandered a nine-point lead to fall 59-57 to Iowa on Thursday, has lost five of its last six games.

The Badgers had difficulty making key baskets and free throws, and inbounding the ball in the Hawkeyes' full-court press in the closing minutes against Iowa.

Iowa freshman Jordan Bohnannon hit a 3-pointer with 9.7 seconds left to lift the Hawkeyes to victory.

Hayes said there are many factors that have led to the team's problems. Finishing and competing for 40 minutes are two of the issues. The Badgers couldn't capitalize late with inbounding the ball against Iowa's press and Hayes took the blame for one of those inbound possessions.

"We come out and play well in spurts," Hayes said. "We're too spurty, if that's a word, of a team. We have our moments where we're really good.

"We'll give you a good five minutes and then we'll forget what we're doing for the next five, and then we'll let a team come back or extend a lead. We've got to focus on putting together a full game and, of course, that starts with your senior leaders."

There still are important stakes on the line for the Badgers and Gophers.

If Wisconsin beats Minnesota, it will claim the No. 2 seed and get a double bye in the Big Ten tournament, which begins on Wednesday at the Verizon Center in Washington D.C.

A number of scenarios are in play with a loss for the Badgers, who could fall to the No. 6 seed.

Minnesota coach Richard Pitino said Wisconsin is a formidable opponent, despite its struggles.

"They didn't get a rebound and Jordan Bohannon hits a 3-pointer," Pitino said about the Badgers. "If they would've rebounded the ball, they win the game. It's not necessarily as complex as everyone makes it out to be. When we went through our five-game losing streak and then we started winning, it was like a made free throw here or a loose ball there. So it's just a fine line.

"They're still a very, very good team; terrific talent, well-coached and experienced. There are a lot of things going in (their) favor. I've got a lot of respect for them."

Pitino said sophomore forward Jordan Murphy and senior graduate student transfer Akeem Springs have improved during the Gophers' winning streak.

Murphy is averaging 11.3 points per game and a team-leading 8.8 rebounds per game. Springs has been dealing with a back issue of late, but averaged 9.9 points during the regular season, and scored 16 points against Wisconsin in the first meeting between the teams.

Meanwhile, the Gophers (23-7, 11-6) have won eight straight games. Minnesota's most recent victory was an 88-73 home victory on Thursday over Nebraska.

One interesting note about Minnesota's schedule is that the team has played five overtime games this season. The Gophers have posted a 3-2 record in extra session meetings, but suffered a 78-76 overtime setback to Wisconsin on Jan. 21. Sophomore forward Ethan Happ scored a career-high 28 points to boost the Badgers.

If Minnesota beats Wisconsin -- something the team hasn't done in Madison since 2009 -- the Gophers have a chance at the No. 2 tournament seed. That will occur if Maryland wins on Saturday against Michigan State.

The Gophers ascend since they own the tiebreaker over the Terrapins. A loss at Wisconsin could drop Minnesota to a No. 4 or No. 5 seed, depending on the outcome of other games.

Wisconsin will claim its 19th consecutive NCAA tournament berth and pundits are plotting the seeds, likely moving the team down in brackets.

Last season, the seventh-seeded Badgers -- competing in the East Regional -- were ousted by Notre Dame in the Sweet 16. Wisconsin reached the Final Four in 2014 and 2015, and lost the NCAA championship game to Duke in 2015.

Pitino, who was hired at Minnesota in April 2013, led the Gophers to the 2014 NIT championship. The Gophers are seeking the program's first NCAA tournament berth since 2013.

                          • Preview: Bearcats (26-4) at Huskies (14-15)
                            Date: March 05, 2017 12:00 PM EDT

According to the regular-season preseason poll in the American Athletic Conference, the top teams at the end of the season figured to be Cincinnati and Connecticut. They were expected to be locked in a tight battle for first place right now -- in early March.

With that in mind, it seemed proper that the Bearcats and Huskies were scheduled to meet on the final day of the regular season at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn. This down-and-dirty defensive rivalry has endured from the previous Big East Conference alignment and the stage was set for a game with huge postseason implications.

                            Not so much now.

The No. 18 Bearcats will still visit Connecticut on Sunday (noon ET, CBS) but the anticipation for this finale went flying out the window in late November and December when the Huskies opened the season with shocking losses to Wagner and Northeastern, followed by a rash of injuries that destroyed UConn's playing rotation.

Cincinnati (26-4, 15-2 American) is locked into the No, 2 seed for the AAC Championship tournament scheduled to begin Thursday at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. No. 14 SMU capped a 15-1 conference record and clinched the top seed with a win against Memphis at Moody Coliseum.

Led by Kyle Washington, Jacob Evans, Gary Clark and Troy Caupain, the Bearcats lead the conference in scoring margin with a plus-14.3 and continue to boast a defense that rattles opponents with 7.7 steals per game.

Since losing at SMU on Feb. 12, the Bearcats have won four of five, falling at Central Florida on Feb. 26. Cincinnati bounced back with a 65-47 win at home against Houston on Thursday to complete its fourth undefeated season at Fifth Third Arena, which opened in 1989.

The Bearcats have always been built on toughness and they outrebounded Houston 40-24 while forcing the Cougars into 13 turnovers.

"Defensively we were as good as we've been in a long, long time," Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin said.

Cronin created more headlines this week with comments that criticized the NCAA Tournament committee for being "financially driven" and seeding the field based on "trying to sell tickets."

"It's a business," Cronin said. "If it wasn't a business we'd be able to have a bus trip in the conference we played in."

Just one week ago, Connecticut (14-15, 9-8) still had a chance to be the No. 3 seed in the AAC tournament on its second home court in Hartford. But losses to SMU and East Carolina have changed the outlook.

The Huskies can wrap up the No. 5 seed and a first-round bye by beating Cincinnati, but they would need to win three straight for the tournament title to ensure an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. That seems to be their only path.

It will be Senior Day for Connecticut's Rodney Purvis, Amida Brimah and Kentan Facey. Leading scorer Jalen Adams (ankle), Purvis (finger), Christian Vital (concussion) and Vance Jackson (undisclosed illness) all have issues.

The Huskies haven't finished with a regular-season record below .500 since 1987 -- Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun's first season at the school.

"All the losses are disappointing to me," coach Kevin Ollie said after the East Carolina loss. "Bad decisions. We've got to be better basketball players. Bad decisions, lackadaisical passes, we got on the break where we had advantages and ended up not even getting a shot, a turnover. We've just got to be better."

                            • Preview: Shockers (29-4) at Redbirds (27-5)
                              Date: March 05, 2017 2:00 PM EDT

ST. LOUIS -- No. 21 Wichita State and Illinois State sure looked the part of NCAA Tournament teams Saturday in double-figure victories during the semifinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.

But with the Selection Committee veering away from mid-majors with shiny records in favor of Power 5 Conference teams with double-figure losses because of RPI and schedule strength, there's a sense that the loser of Sunday's championship game at Scottrade Center will have to sweat out the next week to find out if a bid is offered.

That could add an air of desperation to the season's third matchup between the Shockers (29-4) and Redbirds (27-5), who tied for the MVC regular season title at 17-1, each beating the other at home. But MVC Player of the Year Paris Lee isn't thinking about the ramifications either way.

"We really don't listen to it," he said. "We hear about it, but we don't listen to it whether we're in or not. Our next goal is just to make sure we try our hardest to win the next game."

Illinois State certainly looked dialed in for most of its 63-50 victory over Southern Illinois. It led by as many as 31 points early in the second half and coasted to the finish line, even though coach Dan Muller had to insert a pair of starters in the last 2 1/2 minutes when the Salukis hacked the deficit down to 14.

But the Redbirds were never in any trouble after canning 13 3-pointers and limiting Southern Illinois to 32.2 percent field goal shooting.

"I knew we were ready," Muller said. "Clearly, when you make shots, you look better. I thought our rim protection was good in the first half. I thought our bench was great again, and I did like the look we've had. We've had that look other nights."

One of those nights wasn't Feb. 4 in Wichita, where the Shockers took Illinois State behind the woodshed for an 86-45 beating. They shot nearly 57 percent from the field, held the Redbirds to 33.3 percent accuracy from the floor and forced 19 turnovers.

Illinois State was almost as impressive in its 76-62 verdict over Wichita State on Jan. 14 in Normal, Ill., canning 54.2 percent from the field and limiting the Shockers to their second-fewest points in a game.

"I have no idea," Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall said when asked if he had a feel for Sunday's game. "It's two good teams going at it. I can only game-plan for my team. It should be two heavyweights going at it, and hopefully we made more plays than they do and shoot the ball well."

The Shockers absorbed a game-opening 12-2 run from Missouri State in Saturday's second semifinal and went on to a 78-63 victory behind 21 points from Shaquille Morris, who offered a consistent post threat lately by scoring in double figures during eight of the last 10 games.

For his part, Morris doesn't care who lines up across from him Sunday.

"It's just about winning," he said. "Three years playing and not making it to the championship game (the first two years). We haven't officially cut down nets, so that's what it's all about to me."

                              • Preview: Boilermakers (24-6) at Wildcats (21-9)
                                Date: March 05, 2017 4:30 PM EDT

No. 16 Purdue has nothing more to prove as it enters Sunday's Big Ten regular season finale at Northwestern.

The Boilermakers (24-6, 13-4) are Big Ten regular season champions and clinched the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament, which opens later this week at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.

Meanwhile the host Wildcats (21-9, 10-7) would like to improve their status heading into the league tourney.

This Northwestern team, now the winningest in school history, eyes a third win over a ranked team while improving their Big Ten seed and getting some favorable looks from an NCAA tournament committee likely to pick the Wildcats for the postseason field for the very first time.

Sunday's finale tips off a 4 p.m. EDT at Welsh-Ryan Arena, which will shut down after the game for a major renovation expected to take more than a year.

The Northwestern campus is still abuzz after Nathan Taphorn launched a full-court pass to Dererk Pardon who scored as time expired for a 67-65 victory on Wednesday over Michigan.

"I thought it was long, thought it was going out of bounds at first," Pardon told reporters. "When I caught it, I was like, 'the rim is right there.' We've never practiced that."

The Boilermakers come in with seven wins in their last eight games, with an 82-70 loss at Michigan the only blemish. They have three losses in eight Big Ten road games.

Purdue averages 80.7 points per game and is fourth in defense, allowing an average 66.7 points.

The Boilermakers feature five players averaging in double figures led by Caleb Swanigan's Big Ten-leading 18.6 points and 12.5 rebounds per game. Swanigan seeks to be the first conference player to claim the individual title in both categories in the same season since Ohio State's Evan Turner in 2009-10.

Purdue has been in the Top 25 all season, topping off at No. 14 in the Feb. 20 rankings.

Northwestern's win over Michigan broke a skid of three losses in its last four games and gave the Wildcats a school record 21st victory.

The Big Ten tourney opens Wednesday with the championship game set for next Sunday.
