      February 21, 2017

WACO, Texas (AP) Johnathan Motley had 21 points with 16 rebounds and No. 9 Baylor ended a two-game slide with a 60-54 victory over Oklahoma on Tuesday night to remain in a tie for second place in the Big 12.

Baylor almost blew all of a 15-point lead in the second half, and held on even after not making a field goal in the last 6 minutes

Oklahoma used a 21-8 run to get within 49-47 on Jamuni McNeace's jumper with 9:21 left. But Manu Lecomte then hit consecutive 3-pointers for the Bears, though those were more than 2 minutes apart and their last field goals.

The Bears (23-5, 10-5) stayed even with No. 12 West Virginia and Iowa State in the conference standings with three games left in the regular season.

Kameron McGusty had 13 points to lead the Sooners (9-18, 3-12).

      ---

      No. 11 KENTUCKY 72, MISSOURI 62

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Bam Adebayo's fourth double-double of the season helped Kentucky avoid a late-season upset, as the freshman scored 22 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds.

Terrence Phillips led Missouri with a career-high 22 points, shooting 4 for 8 from 3-point range while the rest of the Tigers shot a combined 0 for 14.

Neither team led by more than two possessions in a low-scoring first half. Missouri (7-20, 2-13 Southeastern Conference) took a 28-24 lead with 4:27 remaining in the half following a 7-0 run. John Calipari called a time out after a layup by Jordan Barnett capped the Tigers' run, and the Wildcats held a 31-30 halftime lead despite shooting 1 for 8 from the field to close the half. Barnett finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.

Kentucky (23-5, 13-2) dominated the glass in the second half, outrebounding the Tigers 26-12 led by Adebayo, who had 10 second-half rebounds.

      ---

      No. 13 FLORIDA 81, SOUTH CAROLINA 66

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - KeVaughn Allen scored 26 points for Florida.

Devin Robinson added 14 points for Florida, which won its ninth consecutive game and locked up one of the top four seeds in the Southeastern Conference Tournament. Chris Chiozza and Kasey Hill chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively.

South Carolina (20-8, 10-5 SEC) dropped its third in a row and fourth in five games.

The Gators (23-5, 13-2) looked much more comfortable in their second game without center John Egbunu, who is out for the season with a torn ligament in his left knee. Sophomore Kevarrius Hayes finished with seven points, six rebounds and three steals.

Sindarius Thornwell led the Gamecocks with 23 points and 10 rebounds.

      ---

No. 14 PURDUE 74, PENN ST. 70, OT

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Ryan Cline scored six of his 11 points in overtime to lift Purdue.

Cline hit consecutive 3-pointers to secure his team's sixth straight win in a game the Boilermakers led for just 9:16.

Vincent Edwards added 14 points, Isaac Haas chipped in 13 and Dakota Mathias scored 12 for the Boilermakers (23-5, 12-3 Big Ten).

Tony Carr scored 21 points, Lamar Stevens added 18 and Mike Watkins finished with 11 for Penn State (14-14, 6-9).

      ---

      No. 25 WICHITA ST. 109, EVANSVILLE 83

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - Shaq Morris had 18 points, Connor Frankamp and Markis McDuffie added 13 apiece for Wichita State in its return to the Top 25.

Landry Shamet added 12 points and Darral Willis Jr. had 11 for the Shockers (26-4, 16-1 Missouri Valley), who finally elbowed their way into the poll this week for the sixth straight season.

The nation's No. 2 team in scoring margin and one of the best defensive teams in the country hasn't lost since Jan. 14.

Jaylon Brown had 25 points to lead Evansville (14-16, 5-12), which has dropped nine straight to Wichita State.

      • Wednesday’s six-pack

Westgate’s odds to win the Masters in April:

        13-2— Jordan Spieth

        8-1— Dustin Johnson

12-1— Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, Hideki Matsuyama

        15-1— Justin Rose

        25-1— Bubba Watson

        100-1— Eldrick Woods

        **************************

        Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings……..

        13) Big change for the Lakers Tuesday; they fired GM Mitch Kupchak after 17 years, they removed co-owner Jim Buss from the front office and they fired publicist John Black, who has been with the Lakers for 27 years. Co-owner Jeanie Buss actually fired her brother and still has to work with him as a co-owner. Christmas should be fun for them in upcoming years.

According to the Interweb, Kupchak hadn’t talked with Jeanie Buss since November 1.

Magic Johnson now runs this dysfunctional show; he went 5-11 as the Lakers’ coach at the end of the 1994 season. Being a great player and being a coach/administrator are different skills.

        12) Agent Rob Pelinka is expected to be named the next GM of the Lakers; he was a sub on the Fab Five Michigan teams with Jalen Rose and Chris Webber. He was also Kobe Bryant’s agent, which makes him familiar with the inner workings of the Lakers organization.

Pelinka’s current NBA clients include James Harden, Eric Gordon and Andre Iguodala.

        11) Longtime major league umpires Bob Davidson, John Hirschbeck, Jim Joyce and Tim Welke have all retired. Hirschbeck retiring is bad news for pitchers. Davidson retiring is bad news for people who enjoy balks being called.

        10) There are four sets of brothers coaching D-I basketball this year:

        Scott/Bryce Drew, Baylor/Vanderbilt
        Sean/Archie Miller, Arizona/Dayton
        Bob/Danny Hurley, Arizona State/Rhode Island
        James/Joe Jones, Yale/Boston U

        9) Catcher Matt Wieters signed a 2-year deal with the Nationals Tuesday.

        8) In basketball, individual plus-minus is the score of the game while that person is in the game. For instance, if I start a game and leave with our team up 20-12, I get a +8 for that segment.

You look at the Denver Nuggets, and Nikola Jokic is +134 in 47% of the team’s minutes. Jameer Nelson is next-best for Denver, at +38 in 53% of the Nuggets’ minutes. Jokic is a valuable guy.

Turning to the 76ers, Joel Embiid is +68 in 30% of the Sixers’ minutes; Jahlil Okafor is -272, in 32% of the team’s minutes. That helps explain why Philly might trade Okafor.

        7) Northern Iowa won the Missouri Valley tournament in three of the last seven years; the other four years, they lost their first tournament game. All or nothing.

        6) Speaking of the MVC, Wichita State is an amazing 52-19 vs spread in its last 71 regular season conference games- thats against the spread!!! The last three years, Shockers are only 3-4 against the spread in conference tournament games, losing to Illinois St., Northern Iowa last two years in the semifinals of Arch Madness.

        5) NBA types who work college games on TV often promote the idea of teams calling a timeout and being able to move the ball up to the front court, the way NBA teams can.

To me, this is an artificial way of creating drama at the end of games. The NBA obviously has the best players in the world, but that doesn’t mean it also has the best rules.

        4) I’m constantly amazed at how much coverage the NFL gets on TV; even now, with the draft two months away, ESPN has a daily show on NFL stuff. There really isn’t that much to talk about until the Combine.

Football never ends: Colorado Buffaloes’ spring practice starts today.

        3) I’m not fond of basketball teams practicing on game days, college or pro. I can see having a walk-thru to go over scoring reports, but having actual scrimmages on game days is a waste of energy and it leads to more injuries (in my opinion) and decreased energy in games.

        2) The Interweb is fabulous; on Twitter, someone posted a 4-page letter a woman sent to her ex, in which she apologized for whatever caused their relationship to end.

The letter was hand-printed, single-spaced and it was four full pages. It appeared to have taken a long time to write and a lot of effort went into it.

The guy’s response? He took a red pen and graded the letter: for grammar, punctuation and usage, making comments in the margin. Then he sent the letter back to her with a grade: D-

I’m thinking the odds of a reconciliation are not good.

1— Seems strange that the ACC tournament is in Brooklyn this year; its like if they held the Big Sky tourney in Los Angeles or if the SEC tournament was in Denver. Makes no sense.

          • Preview: Horned Frogs (17-10) at Jayhawks (24-3)
            Date: February 22, 2017 7:00 PM EDT

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- With another victory, Kansas can clinch a share of the Big 12 basketball title and run its string of consecutive conference championships to 13.

The mark would tie a Division I record UCLA set from 1967-79. Unlike the Bruins, who employed three coaches during their run, the Jayhawks' Big 12 dominance has been orchestrated solely by Bill Self.

And as their coach, Self is not obsessed with records as much as he is the future.

Tight outcomes have been prevalent for the No. 3 Jayhawks (24-3), who at 12-2 in Big 12 play can hold a three-game lead in the conference chase by beating TCU (17-10, 6-8) on Wednesday in Allen Fieldhouse.

"You feel like a cat with nine lives," said Self, "and you know those lives will eventually run out."

Each of the Jayhawks' last seven games was decided by single digits and they won six of them. Kansas is 10-2 on the season in such games, 8-1 against league rivals. It has won eight games it trailed by at least nine points and stands 8-1 when trailing at halftime.

"We've had some miraculous wins, but I do think it speaks volumes on our guys' mental toughness," Self said. "I'm not sure it does physical toughness as much, but mental toughness, I know it does."

One concern for Self is how much fortitude the Jayhawks can summon.

His bench is thin, causing starters to play extended stretches. Senior guard Frank Mason III, the Big 12's leading scorer with a 20.3-point average, also averages the most minutes (35.8) of any league regular. Junior guard Devonte' Graham ranks third (34.9).

Defensive heroics lifted Kansas in its last two wins, both against Big 12 contenders.

In an overtime victory over West Virginia, the Jayhawks used a press to instigate a frantic rally from 14 points down in the final three minutes of regulation. At Baylor, the Jayhawks slowed Bears forward Johnathan Motley with solid defense that led to second-half run-outs and authoritative dunks by Kansas freshman guard Josh Jackson.

"We haven't shot the ball well for a while, and that's one of the strengths of our team," Self said. "If we can keep guarding like we've been guarding and start shooting the ball, I think we can get a lot better fast."

TCU has been streaky of late. The Horned Frogs lost four straight to close out January, then won three in a row, but are now riding a three-game skid.

The Horned Frogs opened Big 12 play by playing Kansas tough before falling 86-80 at home behind a career-high 28 points from Vladimir Brodziansky.

The 6-11 junior forward leads TCU with a 13.8-point average and ranks second in the Big 12 with a 58.8 shooting percentage. Junior forward Kenrich Williams ranks second in the league in rebounds (9.0) and junior guard Alex Robinson third in assists (5.8).

TCU has never finished higher than ninth since joining the Big 12 in 2012-13. In Jamie Dixon's first year as coach, however, the Frogs are in consideration for an NCAA Tournament berth while attempting to hold their own in a deep league.

"When you go top to bottom, you look at the 10 teams, it's pretty remarkable," said Dixon, who came to TCU from Pittsburgh, where he guided the Panthers to NCAA berths in 11 of his 13 seasons.

"We're playing against the best teams in the country. I don't know that a conference has had a bottom team (Oklahoma) that was in the Final Four the year before. It's a good thing to be a part of, but you've got to step up and get better. We're not satisfied."

History will not be on their side at Kansas. TCU has never won in Allen Fieldhouse, has dropped 20 straight against ranked opponents and 39 straight on the road against ranked opponents. Two of the Horned Frogs' three all-time Big 12 road wins have come this season.

            • Preview: Blue Devils (22-5) at Orange (16-12)
              Date: February 22, 2017 7:00 PM EDT

The Duke Blue Devils and Syracuse Orange will make Division I men's college basketball history Wednesday night when two coaches with 1,000 career wins face each other for the first time.

No. 10 Duke (22-5, 10-4 ACC) will carry a seven-game winning streak into the Carrier Dome against Syracuse (16-12, 8-7) in first game of an ESPN doubleheader featuring four Hall of Fame coaches: Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, Syracuse's Jim Boeheim, North Carolina's Roy Williams and Louisville's Rick Pitino.

Krzyzewski is the leader with 1,065 wins. Boeheim is No. 2 with 1,001 wins and an asterisk -- that total includes 101 wins vacated by the NCAA because the Orange violated NCAA rules from 2004-07 and 2010-12.

Still, most of the college basketball world outside of the NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis credits Boeheim with 1,0001 wins, making him and Krzyzewski the only coaches in Division I history with more than 1,000.

Krzyzewski recently turned 71 and Boeheim, 72, is expected to retire after next season, so next year's Duke-Syracuse game or games will likely be the last time we'll see this kind of matchup for a long time.

Williams (806) and Pitino (765) are next on the wins list among active coaches, and they're still a long way from 1,000.

What makes the matchup even more intriguing is that Krzyzewski and Boeheim are close friends. When USA Basketball tabbed Krzyzewski to coach its team after a bronze-medal finish in the 2004 Olympics, Krzyzewski named Boeheim as one of his assistants and they won gold in 2008, 2012 and 2016.

Krzyzewski called to congratulate Boeheim after he posted his 1,000th win on Feb. 4 against Virginia. Under NCAA rules, Syracuse and Boeheim could not acknowledge the milestone victory, but Boeheim shed some light on his personal feelings by saying, "I know how many wins I've had and I'm very proud of it."

"We love seeing coach happy because he works so hard, he cares so much, (and) just to see his work pay off means a lot to me and for me to be able to help him (win his 1,000th game) and be just a little part of it is huge," Syracuse fifth-year senior transfer point guard John Gillon said.

Wednesday's game is also huge for a Syracuse team that's reeling with three consecutive losses that have put the Orange squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble. Since they have played far better at home than on the road (14-3 at the Dome, 2-9 on road or neutral courts), Duke represents Syracuse's last best chance to notch a quality win for its tournament resume.

Syracuse lost 71-65 at Georgia Tech on Sunday night after a controversial moving screen call against Tyler Roberson with 15 seconds remaining robbed the Orange of a chance to tie the score or go ahead.

"We knew it was a big game for us," freshman guard Tyus Battle told syracuse.com after the game. "Now every game from here on out is a big game for us. We'll be ready for the next few. We're back at home against Duke. They're a really good team. That would be a really big win for us."

Duke is perhaps the hottest team in college basketball. The Blue Devils have won seven consecutive games and are 5-0 since Krzyzewski returned after sitting out most of January following back surgery. Duke has overcome several obstacles this season -- injuries to key players, Krzyzewski's absence, and the ongoing scrutiny of guard Grayson Allen's on-court conduct -- to pull within one game of North Carolina (11-4) in the ACC standings.

Duke defeated No. 8 North Carolina 86-78 on Feb. 9 at Cameron Indoor Stadium, and the rivals will meet again March 4 at the Dean Smith Center in the game that could decide the conference regular-season champion.

Duke won its seventh consecutive game Saturday, when ACC Player of the Year candidate Luke Kennard scored 23 points and freshman forward Jayson Tatum added 19 in a 99-94 win over Wake Forest at Cameron.

While Duke is winning, it's not dominating. None of the seven wins were decided by more than 10 points, and the Blue Devils' average margin of victory in that span is 6.4 points.

"We're trying to teach them how hard it is to win," Krzyzewski said. "It's easy to lose. It's hard to win, because it's not just about, 'I want to, I'm prepared, I have a good attitude.' You have to keep an edge."

That shouldn't be a problem Wednesday. Syracuse is expecting a crowd of about 30,000. The two previous Duke-Syracuse games at the Carrier Dome sold out and set the NCAA on-campus record with crowds of 35,446

              • Preview: Golden Gophers (20-7) at Terrapins (22-5)
                Date: February 22, 2017 8:30 PM EDT

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- A regular-season title in the Big Ten Conference may be out of the question now, but No. 24 Maryland is still playing for postseason seeding in the NCAA Tournament.

Minnesota, meanwhile, may be playing for its postseason lives.

Maryland (22-5, 10-4 Big Ten) will host the Golden Gophers (20-7, 8-6) on Wednesday in a key late-season conference battle.

The Terrapins lost 71-60 on Sunday at then-No. 14 Wisconsin, which left the Badgers in a tie for first with Purdue at 11-3 in the conference.

"We couldn't get a stop. When we did get a stop, they got an offensive rebound and we fouled. We just couldn't get a stop," Maryland freshman guard Kevin Huerter told reporters.

The Gophers entered play Monday tied for fifth in the conference with Michigan State at 8-6. Minnesota is coming off an 83-78 overtime win Sunday against Michigan.

"We're becoming a tough basketball team right in front of everybody's eyes," Golden Gophers head coach Richard Pitino told reporters after the game.

Minnesota improved to 3-2 in overtime conference games this season.

The Gophers are led in scoring by junior guard Nate Mason (15.0 points per game, team-high 144 assists), freshman guard Amir Coffey (12.3 points), sophomore forward Jordan Murphy (10.7) and sophomore guard Dupree McBrayer (10.4).

Minnesota is scoring 75.4 points and giving up 68.6 while shooting 43 percent from the field and allowing opponents to make 40 percent of their shots.

The Gophers had a 44-31 edge in rebounds in the Sunday win.

"Rebounding wins in this league," McBrayer told reporters. "We've tried to stay focused on that."

The Terps are led by junior point guard Melo Trimble, who is averaging 17.6 points and has 95 assists.

Freshman forward Justin Jackson is averaging 10.8 points and 6.2 rebounds. He had 28 points and 10 rebounds in an 85-78 win at Minnesota on Jan. 28.

Maryland freshman guard Anthony Cowan is averaging 10.4 points and has a team-high 101 assists, while Huerter is averaging 8.9 points.

Maryland is scoring 74.9 points per contest and allowing 66.9. The Terps are shooting 37 percent from 3-point range while opponents are making 32 percent from long distance.

Trimble did not play the last 4:32 at Wisconsin on Sunday.

"He was tried. He was carrying us," head coach Mark Turgeon said. "He missed two free throws that he never misses. He was tired. If we would've made a little run, I would've put him back in. But we have four more games in 10 days."

"Coach took me out. I thought I was going to get a breather but I winded up not going back in," Trimble said. "The game was pretty much pushed out to the point where there was no point for me to go back in."

Trimble was named the conference player of the week on Monday after he averaged 29.5 points in two games against Northwestern and Wisconsin.

He has scored at least 10 points in a game 25 times this season and has done so 16 games in a row. Trimble had 32 points at Wisconsin and is just the 11th Maryland player to reach 30 points in a game three times in his career. He is now 10th in school history with 30 games of at least 20 points.

                • Preview: Friars (16-11) at Bluejays (22-5)
                  Date: February 22, 2017 9:00 PM EDT

OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton and Providence hope to add a little shine to their postseason resumes in Wednesday's Big East Conference basketball rematch.

For the No. 23 Bluejays, it's about securing the No. 2 seed in the Big East tournament and the highest possible seed for the NCAA tourney.

Providence is trying to bounce off the NCAA bubble and into the tournament, whether it's for a first-round game in Dayton or when the tournament begins in earnest March 16.

"It's obviously a big game for Providence as they try to get themselves on the right side of the bubble for the NCAA tournament," Creighton coach Greg McDermott said. "It's also a big game for us because we want to end the season on a little bit of a run."

The Friars (16-11, 6-8 Big East) put themselves back in the discussion with victories over Butler and Xavier that have moved them to 67th in the latest RPI. A road victory over Creighton (22-5, 9-5) makes that RPI number shrink even further.

"It's another opportunity for us to play a ranked team on the road," Friars coach Ed Cooley told the Providence Journal. "We're trying to do everything we can to get one win at a time because we feel we've given away many in the past."

When the Friars first played Creighton on Jan. 7 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center, that win wasn't one of those Providence gave away. The Bluejays were at full strength and en route to the highest ranking in school history (No. 7) later that month after that 78-64 victory.

"We were at full strength and playing well," McDermott said. "They were struggling at that point. (Kyron) Cartwright didn't play in the second half due to injury, so they're a totally different basketball team right now."

McDermott said Cartwright and Rodney Bullock are playing at a high level, and that has helped the Friars get the two big home wins over Butler and Xavier. Combine that with a team that traditionally plays defense, and McDermott knows the Bluejays are in for a battle.

"Some of their secondary pieces that weren't a big part of their offense before are now," McDermott said. "Defensively, Ed's teams have always done a good job. They've had eight days to get ready, so I'm sure we're going to see some things we haven't seen before."

There's also no peeking ahead to Creighton's Saturday showdown at No. 2 Villanova. A question about that possibility Wednesday was dismissed by McDermott as quickly as it was asked.

"No, no, no, not at all," McDermott said. "I think they understand how important each game is with these last four, both positioning ourselves for the Big East tournament seed and also for a postseason seed.

"It's that time of year when every one's important. I think the second seed in the Big East tournament is going to be huge."

Despite the 14-point loss last month, Friars forward Emmitt Holt is convinced things just might turn out differently this time against the Bluejays and Providence's final three foes -- Marquette, DePaul and St. John's.

"I feel like all these games are winnable," Holt told the Providence Journal. "We finish out strong, win 'em all, we'll be back in this tournament."

Creighton senior guard Isaiah Zierden said there's no chance the Bluejays will take this game lightly

"We've had a tough time playing them ever since we (joined) the Big East," Zierden said. "We did a decent job out there. They're doing a lot better in transition than they were earlier in the conference season, so we have to make sure we're doing a better job of transition defense."

                  • Preview: Bulldogs (21-6) at Wildcats (26-2)
                    Date: February 22, 2017 9:00 PM EDT

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Second-ranked Villanova can clinch the Big East regular season outright championship with a victory over No. 22 Butler Wednesday night at The Pavilion.

The Wildcats improved to 26-2 overall and 13-2 in the league after blitzing Seton Hall on the road 92-70 last Saturday. Jalen Brunson had 22 points and a career-best 10 assists while Kris Jenkins also scored 22 points as Villanova shot a sizzling 67.3 percent from the field, a season high.

Butler (21-6, 10-5) will be a formidable opponent on the Wildcats' home floor, where Villanova has won a program-record 48 in a row. The Bulldogs defeated Villanova 66-58 on Jan. 4 at Hinkle Fieldhouse, snapping a school record 20-game win streak.

The home winning streak at The Pavilion began in February 2013, the game after losing 55-52 to Providence.

"We made shots," Villanova coach Jay Wright told reporters after the 22-point win at Seton Hall. "When you make shots you're going to win most games. We made some tough shots -- it wasn't their defense. We haven't shot the ball that well in a while. I think that was a big difference in the game. That was one of our best offensive performances we've had this season."

Villanova won without senior forward Darryl Reynolds, who has been out the last three games with a rib injury. It's unclear if he'll be available against Butler as Villanova looks to extend a seven-game winning streak.

That's what made the road victory more impressive. The Wildcats essentially used a six-man rotation along with deep reserve Dylan Painter, who managed to contribute two points and one rebound in 13 minutes.

Brunson, a sophomore point guard, was a steadying influence on his way to a double-double, the first of his career.

"Jalen just controlled the game," Wright said. "When he sees that we need scoring from that position, he does that. When he sees we need to get organized, he does it. That's the beauty of a great point guard. Some guys can score but aren't as good at running an offense. Or they are good at getting other people shots but not as good at scoring themselves. Jalen does both."

Butler has already posted its 11th 20-win season in the last 12 years.

In the last matchup against Villanova, Kethan Savage and Andrew Chrabascz paced four Bulldogs in double figures with 13 points each.

On Sunday, Butler defeated St. John's 82-66 for its second straight win. The balanced Bulldogs were led by Nate Fowler with 15 points and Tyler Lewis with 10 points, eight assists and zero turnovers.

Butler put together consecutive victories for the first time in nearly a month.

"All around us, people said the sky was falling and we were still practicing well," Butler coach Chris Holtmann told reporters after the win against St. John's. "That's a credit to them."

The Bulldogs have registered five wins over ranked teams this season and now has a rare chance to sweep the defending national champions.

                    • Preview: Ducks (24-4) at Golden Bears (18-8)
                      Date: February 22, 2017 9:00 PM EDT

Wednesday's game in Berkeley, Calif., between No. 6 Oregon and California is critical for both teams, but for different reasons.

The Ducks (24-4, 13-2 Pac-12) still hope to capture a second straight regular-season Pac-12 title, while the Bears (18-8, 9-5) need a big win to ensure their inclusion in the NCAA tournament.

Oregon needs some help to earn a share of the conference crown. The Ducks are in second place, one game behind Arizona, which is 14-1 and hosts UCLA and USC this week.

"I wish we had it in our control, but we don't," Oregon coach Dana Altman told the Eugene Register-Guard. "We have to get some help. Arizona is a very tough club, but we have to take care of our own business. We have three left and there are a lot of ifs, but we don't have control, which is a disappointment."

All three of Oregon's remaining regular-season games (California, Stanford and Oregon State) are on the road, and that is an issue for the Ducks, who finished 17-0 at home but are just 4-3 in true road games.

The Ducks handled Cal 86-63 in their first meeting on Jan. 19, but that game was in Eugene, Ore. The Bears are 14-2 at home this season, losing only to Virginia by four points and to Arizona by five.

"We have to take care of our business and hope something good happens," Altman said. "If it doesn't, we'll try to go win the conference tournament title, but we'd like to be involved down the stretch here."

What has helped Oregon recently is the play of Dillon Brooks. He is averaging 15.4 points per game, tops on the team, but over the past six games he has averaged 21.3 points while making 22 of 38 3-pointers (57.9 percent).

Brooks scored 23 points in the Ducks' 101-73 thrashing of Colorado on Saturday in Oregon's final home game.

He played only 13 minutes in the first game against Cal before leaving with a lower-leg injury, so he should be a bigger factor Wednesday.

Likewise, Cal should expect to get more from its star, Ivan Rabb, who had just four points on 2-of-10 shooting along with six rebounds in the earlier meeting with the Ducks.

Rabb is averaging 14.8 points and a conference-leading 10.7 rebounds per game, and the Bears need production from Rabb to enhance their chances of landing an NCAA tournament berth for the second straight year.

Those postseason hopes were dealt a blow on Saturday when Cal lost on the road to a Stanford team that was 4-9 in the conference and had lost five of its previous six games.

ESPN's Joe Lunardi still has the Bears in his projected NCAA tournament field as a No. 10 seed as of Monday, but losing to Stanford pushed the Bears onto the bubble.

That was not on the mind of Cal coach Cuonzo Martin immediately following the loss, though.

"It concerns me because we lost, but outside of that I'm not concerned with the other parts," Martin said. "It concerned me because we lost the game, and we had 20 turnovers, and we didn't play well. Our bigs, Kameron (Rooks) and Kingsley (Okoroh), didn't play well against (Stanford forward) Reid Travis. Those are the things that concern me. You can't have 20 turnovers, especially against a team that's not pressing you. You've got to take care of the ball."

Asked to explain the 20 turnovers, Martin said, "I wish I could. This is college basketball; (you've) got to take care of the ball."

Jabari Bird was the Bears' high scorer in that game with 23 points, but his play didn't thrill Martin either.

"I thought he was OK," Martin said. "I've never been consumed with how many points a guy scores; it's the whole floor game. I didn't think he had a great game. He scored 23 points, but I didn't think he had a great floor game with six turnovers."

The Bears need a quality win to put on their resume, and a victory over Oregon would provide that. Cal has beaten the Ducks five of the past six times they met at Cal's Haas Pavilion, and that includes last season's 83-63 victory over an Oregon team that would wind up with a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

To beat Oregon again, Cal must rely on its strengths -- defense and rebounding.

The Bears rank first in the Pac-12 in both scoring defense, yielding 62.7 points per game, and field-goal percentage defense, allowing opponents to shoot 39.0 percent. The Ducks' 86 points and 58 percent shooting in the earlier meeting are both season highs for a Cal opponent.

The Bears are second in the conference in rebounding margin at plus-7.3.

"Cal and Stanford are some of the top rebounding teams, so it is big for us to focus on that now," Ducks guard Dylan Ennis said, according to the Register-Guard. "Especially on the road where we don't have our crowd to cheer for us."

                      • Preview: Cardinals (22-5) at Tar Heels (23-5)
                        Date: February 22, 2017 9:00 PM EDT

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina didn't have much of a problem going at a slower pace at times in its last game.

The No. 8 Tar Heels will encounter an opponent Wednesday night more willing to operate at a brisker clip when No. 7 Louisville visits the Smith Center for a game with first-place implications in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

"It's always a fun team to play against because they have a fun style of play," Louisville coach Pitino said of the Tar Heels. "It's always an uptempo game and I know my guys like to play that way."

North Carolina coach Roy Williams said it will require shifting gears, but that's something the Tar Heels should enjoy.

"It will be a much different game than what it was against Virginia," Williams said. "Up and down and they like to press. It's a vastly different type of game we're going to play."

North Carolina (23-5, 11-3 ACC), which is involved in a stretch of a late-season showdowns, holds a one-game lead on Louisville (22-5, 10-4) and Duke, which will be wrapping up its contest at Syracuse at about the time of tip-off in Chapel Hill.

Even with the 65-41 romp past Virginia on Saturday night, North Carolina ranks fifth nationally in scoring with 86.9 points per game.

"It's kind of weird because we're used to scoring in the 80s and 90s," Tar Heels guard Joel Berry said. "It just felt different, but if we have to win a game like that, we have to win it like that. If we have to play at someone else's pace, we're going to do our best to beat them."

Under Williams, the Tar Heels are 10-2 at the Smith Center in Top 10 matchups, though this is the first such matchup against an ACC opponent since a game with Duke five years ago.

Louisville often encourages a faster tempo by playing a full-court defense, something that might feed into North Carolina's preferences. Yet the Cardinals haven't reached the level defensively that Pitino would like to see on a regular basis.

"We're getting better in some stages, but we're nowhere near where we were four years ago," Pitino said.

The coach's view on the subject was certainly impacted by the Cardinals' 94-90 victory Saturday against Virginia Tech, marking the first time an opponent had scored more than 80 points on his team this season.

Pitino said North Carolina junior swingman Justin Jackson has become one of the premier players in the college game based on his production.

Jackson has led the Tar Heels in scoring 15 times this season, reaching the 20-point mark in 14 games. He's seventh in the ACC in scoring, averaging 18.6 points per game.

Guard Donovan Mitchell, at 15.6 per game, is Louisville's top scorer.

Louisville and North Carolina have split four meetings since the Cardinals joined the ACC, though this is only the second time they'll play in Chapel Hill as league members.

This marks the second-to-last home game for North Carolina, with visits to Pittsburgh and Virginia before another game that could directly impact the top of the standings when Duke shows up for the regular-season finale.
