Top 10 Tangle

North Carolina hosts Louisville in Chapel Hill in a battle of Top 10 clubs. It's the first meeting between the Atlantic Coast Conference heavyweights this season. UNC was tripped up 71-65 at KFC Yum! Center last season, and the Tar Heels have knocked off the Cardinals just once in three tries since Louisville joined the ACC. UNC is also 0-3 ATS in their past three regular season meetings against Louisville.

The Cardinals have won six of their past seven games overall, but they're 1-3 ATS over their past four outings and 1-7-1 ATS in their past nine as a road underdog. They have been money on the road, however, going 4-1-1 ATS in their past six trips away from the banks of the Ohio River. Total bettors have also made plenty of money off of Louisville, as the 'over' is a perfect 5-0 in their past five outings, and 9-2 over their past 11 games overall. The 'over' is also 5-2 in Louisville's past seven road outings.

The Tar Heels have rebounded nicely after their loss Feb. 9 in the 'Battle of the Blues', routing both North Carolina State and Virginia each by 24 points. While UNC is just 2-4 ATS in their past six outings, they're 7-2 ATS in their past nine games at the Dean Dome, and 19-7 ATS in their 26 overall at home. They're also 19-7 ATS in their past 26 as a home favorite. While the over is what Louisville has been all about lately, the 'under' is 5-1-1 in UNC's past seven overall and 4-0 in their past four as a home favorite.

Champagne Super 'Nova

Defending national champ Villanova will welcome Butler in their penultimate home game of the regular season. These two sides met in Indianapolis back on Jan. 4, and it was the Bulldogs handing the Wildcats their first loss of the year, 66-58. You know revenge will be on the mind of 'Nova in this one

The Wildcats have won all 13 of their games on the home floor this season, but they're 0-4 ATS over their past four outings in Philadelphia. They are also just 2-6 ATS in their past eight league games and 2-8 ATS in their past nine as a favorite. Villanova has also covered just twice in their past seven against teams with an overall winning mark. On the flip side, Butler is 5-1-1 ATS in their past seven as an underdog, and 18-7-1 ATS in their past 26 against teams with a winning overall record.

The 'under' has been the prevailing theme for both sides lately, going 4-1-1 in Butler's past six against teams with a winning overall record. The under is also 4-1 in their past five road outings. For 'Nova, the under is 14-4 in their past 18 overall, 12-4 in their past 16 league games and 3-1-1 in their past five against teams with a winning overall mark. The under is also 4-1-1 in the past six meetings between these sides.

Big Ten Two-fer

A pair of 20-plus win teams hook up in College Park when Minnesota battles Maryland at the Xfinity Center. The Golden Gophers are 4-1 ATS in their past five games overall, and 4-1 ATS in their past five against teams with a winning overall record. However, they're just 11-27 ATS in their past 38 as a road underdog and 17-35-1 ATS in their past 53 overall on the road The Terrapins are 3-0-1 ATS in their past four at home, and 12-3-1 ATS in their past 16 overall. They're also 12-3-3 ATS in their past 18 against teams with a winning straight up mark.

Rutgers hosts Michigan, looking to play spoiler to the Wolverines and their flickering postseason chances. Michigan is favored by eight points and can ill-afford a misstep against an inferior opponent. While Michigan is 4-1 ATS in their past five as a favorite, they're just 1-4 ATS in their past five on the road when favored. They're also a dismal 2-6 ATS in their past eight overall on the road. Rutgers is just 18-41 ATS in their past 59 conference games, and 2-8 ATS in their past 10 games against teams with a winning percentage greater than .600.

To Summit Up

North Dakota State travels to Oral Roberts looking for their 19th victory of the season, while ORU looks to avoid it's 22nd loss in 30 tries. Based on the records, it might be a bit of a surprise that NDSU is favored by just a bucket. However, the Bison are just 17-36 ATS in their past 53 road games, and 1-4 ATS in their past five as a road favorite. They're also a dismal 4-9 ATS in their past 13 against teams with a winning percentage under .400. ORU has really struggled, though, going 1-7 ATS in their past eight overall, and 1-6-1 ATS in their past eight as an underdog. The favorite is 8-3 ATS in the past 11 in this series, although the Bison are just 1-4 ATS in their past five trips to Oral Roberts

Southern Charms

Wofford has struggled with a 14-15 SU record this season, but they have been decent against the number. They'll take on a terrible Virginia Military Institute side which has already lost 20 games overall. Wofford is 10-2 ATS in their past 12 road games, and 17-5 ATS in their past 22 overall. They're also 10-4 ATS in their past 14 SoCon games. The Keydets are a dismal 4-9-1 ATS in their past 14 as an underog and 1-5-1 ATS in their past seven against teams with a straight up losing mark.

A pair of 20-plus win clubs hook up when Furman meets East Tennessee State. The Bucs have won 22 games and are playing like the days when they had Keith 'Mister' Jennings running the show. The Paladins of Furman have covered nine of their past 11, and four of their past five on the road. They're also 7-2 ATS in their past nine as underdogs. ETSU is 11-5 ATS in their past 16 as home favorites, but just 1-4 ATS in their past five at home against teams with a winning road mark and 1-4 ATS in their past five overall as a favorite.

VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) Kelan Martin scored 22 points and fueled a stunning second-half rally to lead No. 22 Butler past No. 2 Villanova 74-66 on Wednesday night, snapping the Wildcats' on-campus home winning streak at 48 games.

Kamar Baldwin added 15 points for the Bulldogs (22-6, 11-5 Big East), who have handed the defending national champion Wildcats two of their three losses this season.

Jalen Brunson scored 24 points and Josh Hart had 18 for Villanova (26-3, 13-3), which came into the game having already clinched at least a share of their fourth straight Big East regular-season championship.

The game marked the first time Hart and fellow seniors Kris Jenkins and Darryl Reynolds lost a game at the Pavilion in their four-year careers.

No. 3 KANSAS 87, TCU 68

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - Frank Mason III scored 20 points, Carlton Bragg provided a big lift off the bench and Kansas pulled away in the second half and clinched a share of its 13th consecutive Big 12 championship.

Devonte Graham added 17 points and seven assists, and Bragg and Josh Jackson scored 15 points apiece, as the Jayhawks (25-3, 13-2) cruised to their NCAA-leading 60th conference title.

Their streak dating to coach Bill Self's second season in Lawrence matches the Division I record of 13 straight league titles UCLA set in the 1960s and `70s.

Kansas can clinch the outright title with a victory at Texas on Saturday.

Alex Robinson had 15 points for the Horned Frogs (17-11, 6-9), who have lost four straight and still have never won in Allen Fieldhouse.

No. 6 OREGON 68, CALIFORNIA 65

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Dillon Brooks hit a 3-pointer with 0.2 seconds to play to cap a comeback from 16 points down and Oregon kept its hopes alive for a Pac-12 title.

The Ducks (25-4, 14-2) trailed by 16 points early in the second half and were down 10 with just over 4 minutes left before rallying for the win that moved them a half-game behind Arizona for first place in the conference. Oregon holds the tiebreaker.

Brooks led the Ducks with 22 points and Chris Boucher added 18.

Jabari Bird scored 20 points to lead the way for the Golden Bears (18-9, 9-6), whose hopes for an NCAA Tournament berth were dealt a big blow with this loss.

No. 8 NORTH CAROLINA 74, No. 7 LOUISVILLE 63

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Justin Jackson scored 21 points and North Carolina pulled away after halftime.

Kennedy Meeks added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Tar Heels (24-5, 12-3), who strengthened their hold on first place in the league.

The Tar Heels took over with a 13-3 second-half run to break a 40-all tie and led by 17 points late.

Donovan Mitchell scored 21 points for the Cardinals (22-6, 10-5), who didn't shoot well after halftime and struggled to make much of anything outside the paint.

Louisville made just 5 of 20 3-point attempts and 4 of 13 free throws.

SYRACUSE 78, No. 10 DUKE 75

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - John Gillon hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer for Syracuse.

With just 7.5 seconds left on the clock after a Duke miss, Gillon drove to the top of the key and banked in a desperation shot to send the huge crowd into a frenzy as they stormed the court.

Syracuse (17-12, 9-7 Atlantic Coast Conference) had lost three straight and needed another signature victory to go with its two top-10 wins to bolster its resume for a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Duke (22-6, 10-5 ACC) had won seven straight and entered the game tied for second in the ACC with Louisville.

Gillon finished with 26 points and Tyus Battle had 18 for Syracuse in a game that featured 11 ties, half of them in the closing minutes.

Luke Kennard led Duke with 23 points and Jayson Tatum had 19 points and 13 rebounds.

PROVIDENCE 68, No. 23 CREIGHTON 66

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Kyron Cartwright made a 3-pointer with 2.2 seconds left to give Providence the victory.

Cartwright's shot from the right wing was the Friars' first field goal in more than 5 minutes and gave them their first lead since the opening 4 minutes of the second half.

Khyri Thomas's 3-point try ahead of the buzzer for Creighton bounced off the rim.

Emmitt Holt scored all 18 of his points in the second half for the Friars (17-11, 7-8 Big East), who won their third straight.

Marcus Foster had 18 points and Justin Patton added 17 for the Bluejays (22-6, 9-6).

MINNESOTA 89, No. 24 MARYLAND 75

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Dupree McBrayer scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half and Minnesota won its sixth straight victory.

The Golden Gophers (21-7, 9-6 Big Ten) are undefeated since losing to Maryland (22-6, 10-5) on Jan. 28. It was Minnesota's third consecutive road win, its longest run in the conference since 1989-90.

Down 53-50, the Gophers got 12 points from McBrayer in a 20-7 run that broke open a game that had gone back and forth to that point.

Nate Mason scored 17 points and Akeem Springs added 16 for Minnesota, which committed only six turnovers - two after halftime.

Maryland standout guard Melo Trimble went 4 for 12 from the field and the Terrapins went 7 for 27 beyond the arc in losing for the fourth time in six games. Backup center Ivan Bender scored a career-high 15 points for Maryland and Trimble and Anthony Cowan each had 11.

Preview: Tigers (18-9) at Bearcats (24-3)

CINCINNATI -- Mick Cronin feels fortunate to have avoided the significant injuries that have befallen some college basketball teams this season. Cronin's team is fully healthy and if that remains the case, the No. 15 Bearcats could be poised for a deep tournament run.

"You look around the country, there have been a lot of bad injuries," said Cronin, who picked up his 300th career win versus Tulsa on Saturday. "If you want to make a run ... you need to be healthy and have some breaks go your way. It is important to keep guys fresh, physically and mentally, for March."

On Thursday night, the long-standing rivalry between Cincinnati and Memphis is renewed at Fifth Third Arena as the Bearcats and Tigers meet for the 74th time in a series which spans 39 years and four conferences.

The Bearcats lead the series 40-33, including a 22-10 mark at Fifth Third Arena. The home team has won the past five meetings.

Cincinnati (24-3, 13-1 American Athletic) is looking to extend its home winning streak to 25 games. A victory also would give the Bearcats their best start during Cronin's tenure.

Cincinnati has been ranked nationally for 13 straight weeks.

Memphis (18-9, 8-6) and first-year coach Tubby Smith have had a week off since losing at Connecticut, the Tigers' third defeat in the past four games.

To this point, a relatively minor knee injury to freshman center Nysier Brooks the only significant injury to date. Brooks missed only three games.

The Tigers are led by 6-foot-9 sophomore forward Dedric Lawson, who leads the AAC with 10.1 rebounds and ranks second in the league with an average of 19.5 points.

The big news out of Memphis this week, however, is that Lawson will forgo his junior year and declare for the NBA draft, as reported by radio host Jason Smith on Memphis' ESPN 92.9 FM.

For now, the Tigers are leaning heavily on Lawson, who ranks sixth in the nation with 17 double-doubles.

"He's a really skilled offensive player," Cronin said. "He knows how to get his defender off balance and get fouled. At 19 years old, he's a pretty skilled offensive player."

Memphis ranks second in the AAC in steals, third in scoring and third in assists.

"They're athletic. They're long. They're fast," said Cronin. "They can convert bad offense into layups at the other end. They have very talented offensive players. They pose some problems."

For the second straight season, Bearcats junior forward Gary Clark is hitting his stride at just the right time. Clark is averaging 11.7 points and 10.8 rebounds in February. Last season, he averaged 13.1 points and 10 rebounds in February. He has six combined double-doubles over the past two Februarys.

Another key to Cincinnati's success is the steady play of senior point guard Troy Caupain, who needs two assists to pass Cashmere Wright for third place on the school's all-time list. Caupain is one reason why the Bearcats rank third in the country in assists-to-turnover ratio.

"He does an excellent job running our team," said Cronin. "Then the intangibles of being a senior, wanting to have a great year. We have a lot of great things ahead of us, and he knows that."

Preview: Bruins (24-3) at Sun Devils (13-15)

TEMPE, Ariz. -- No. 5 UCLA has stubbed its toe at Arizona State twice in the last four seasons, including a two-point loss almost two years ago to the day of Thursday's visit by the Bruins.

If the Bruins want to ensure a meaningful match against No. 4 Arizona on Saturday, they cannot slip up again.

Guard Lonzo Ball and the Bruins (24-3, 11-3 Pac-12) have won five games in a row and need to keep winning to have a realistic shot at their first conference regular-season title since 2013. Arizona (25-3, 14-1) and No. 6 Oregon (24-4, 13-2) are first and second in the Pac-12.

Right now, Arizona State (13-15, 6-9) is the Bruins' only concern. The Sun Devils have won three of their last five since a one-point loss at Oregon.

UCLA, which won its first 13 games before losing to Oregon, posted a three-point victory over the Ducks in the return match on Feb. 10. Its current streak includes a 41-point victory at Washington and a 32-point win over rival USC on Saturday, which included a 26-point performance by Bryce Alford and endorsements from two proud papas.

"I like it when he snarls," said UCLA coach Steve Alford, after seeing his son's facial expression when he was knocked to the floor on a drive. "I wish he would snarl in warmups. When he gets that, he goes to another level toughness-wise."

Ball, a freshman point guard considered to be one of the top players in the NBA draft if he leaves school, had 15 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. He leads NCAA Division I with an average of 7.6 assists per game, and with 206 assists is on pace to break former Oregon State guard Gary Payton's conference freshman record of 229.

"I'm going to tell you right now, he's better than Stephen Curry to me," Ball's father, LaVar, told the Pac-12 network in an interview during the game. "Put Steph Curry on UCLA's team right now and put my boy on Golden State and watch what happens."

Senior Alford had five 3-pointers against USC in avenging a January loss and has 301 career threes, the most among active Power-6 conference players and seventh in Pac-12 history.

Freshman forward T.J. Leaf, another projected first-round draft pick if he leaves school, leads UCLA in scoring (16.7 per game) and rebounding (8.7) while shooting 62.8 percent from the field.

The Bruins average 92.3 points and are shooting 53.5 percent from the field, both tops in the NCAA.

Arizona State, which starts four guards, combats its lack of size with perimeter scoring. Guard Torian Graham is second in the Pac-12 in scoring at 18.5 points while Tra Holder (17.2) is fourth and Shannon Evans II (15.8) is 10th.

The Sun Devils are averaging 9.8 3-pointers, and with 273 threes are threatening the school record of 288 set in 2009. They were outscored 21-2 in the final 10 minutes of an 86-71 loss at Washington State on Saturday.

"I don't know if we ran out of steam as the game progressed," Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley said. "We felt great about our first half ... but we couldn't sustain it in the second half."

Preview: Badgers (22-5) at Buckeyes (15-13)

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- There's good news for No. 16 Wisconsin going into Thursday night's Big Ten game against Ohio State.

The health of Bronson Koenig.

The senior point guard is expected to be back in the starting lineup when the Badgers (22-5, 11-3 Big Ten) visit Value City Arena for the first of two road games that could go a long way in deciding whether they win a Big Ten regular-season title.

Wisconsin travels to Michigan State on Sunday and then ends the regular season next week at home against Iowa and Minnesota.

Koenig sat out a loss to Michigan last week with a left calf injury before returning on Sunday and came off the bench to help Wisconsin pick up a critical 71-60 win over No. 23 Maryland.

After Tuesday's practice, he said the leg wasn't sore after playing 31 minutes against the Terrapins.

"I didn't know how minutes I had played until I looked at the stat sheet after the game," Koenig said, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "I was kind of surprised and surprised at how good I felt."

Koenig, averaging 13.3 points per game, has struggled to recapture his shooting touch while playing through the injury. He made only 1 of 4 3-point shots against Maryland and finished with nine points. But he has made some clutch baskets for Wisconsin during the second half of the Big Ten schedule and needs three 3-pointers to tie the school career record of 232 set by Ben Brust.

"I feel like if I just keep doing what I'm doing and not forcing anything and letting the game come to me, I feel like it is close to starting to fall consistently," Koenig told the Journal-Sentinel.

In Wisconsin's 89-66 win over Ohio State on Jan. 12 in Madison, Koenig led all scorers with 21 points and hit 5 of 7 shots from 3-point range. The Badgers torched the Buckeyes with 55 percent 3-point shooting and scored 28 second-chance points off 21 offensive rebounds.

Sophomore forward Ethan Happ has emerged as a driving force for Wisconsin this season. He is leading the team in scoring at 14.7 points per game and in rebounding at 6.0. Senior forward Nigel Hayes, an Ohio native, is right behind at 13.6 points per game. The two combined for 41 points against Maryland on Sunday.

Wisconsin needs a win to keep pace atop the Big Ten standings with Purdue (23-5, 12-3). The Badgers trail the Boilermakers, who won in overtime at Penn State on Tuesday night, by a half-game. So, there's an urgency there to follow the victory over Maryland with success on the road, where they are 8-4 this season.

Ohio State, meanwhile, just wants to win a game. The Buckeyes (15-13, 5-10) blew a five-point lead in the final 30 seconds and lost at home to Nebraska on Saturday.

That loss guaranteed Ohio State will finish below .500 in the conference. None of Thad Matta's teams have ended a season with a losing overall record in his coaching career, but that remains a distinct possibility unless the Buckeyes close out strong.

Consistency and lack of leadership has proved to be a problem on the floor. Jae'Sean Tate is the leading scorer at 14.0 points per game and Marc Loving is averaging 12.6, but Loving managed just five points in the first matchup with Wisconsin this season.

Ending a three-game losing streak won't be easy against the Badgers. One thing is certain, though. Matta will set an Ohio State record when he coaches in his 457th game, breaking a tie with Harold Olsen.

"I've said this, you never get too high, you never get too low," Matta said. "Am I a little bit lower than normal? Yeah, I probably am. There's some things I know this team can do, and there's a level I think we can play at. Somehow, some way, we have to get them to believe they can do that."

Preview: Trojans (21-6) at Wildcats (25-3)

No. 4 Arizona has a huge matchup looming against No. 5 UCLA on Saturday, but the Wildcats can't look that far ahead.

Arizona (25-3, 14-1 Pac-12) will look to maintain its conference lead when it hosts USC (21-6, 8-6) on Thursday night at 10 p.m. ET in Tucson.

Looking ahead, the game against the Bruins will be only the seventh matchup of top-5 teams in league history.

Arizona coach Sean Miller said Monday he expects his team to be at full strength. Starting point guard Kadeem Allen missed two games last week because of a dislocated pinky finger on his right hand. Starting center Dusan Ristic missed a game-and-a-half because of a grade-1 sprained ankle.

"We expect both guys to be able to play Thursday and, in some ways, we expect both guys to be fully functional as well," Miller said.

Arizona entered Wednesday night's games with a one-game lead on Oregon in the Pac-12 race. USC is in fifth, considered to be safely into the NCAA Tournament at the moment.

The Trojans have lost two consecutive games, but their 21-6 start is still the team's best since the 1992 season. The game against Arizona concludes a three-game Pac-12 gauntlet, with USC having lost 80-71 at home to then-No. 7 Oregon and 102-70 at UCLA, which was ranked sixth.

"We were right there halfway through the second half," USC coach Andy Enfield said. "Our defense was not as exceptional as the first time we played them."

Enfield also noted that the Trojans shot less than 40 percent from the field in the recent losses to the Ducks and Bruins, and they made just 37.3 percent in a 73-66 home loss to Arizona on Jan. 19.

USC didn't have power forward Bennie Boatwright because of injury in that game, but Arizona played without guard Allonzo Trier, who missed the first 19 games because of an NCAA suspension.

Trier is averaging 13.9 points in nine games. Boatwright is averaging 17.4 points in the five games since returning from a knee injury. At 6-foot-10, he's a dangerous 3-point shooter.

"He's one of our conference's overall toughest matchups," Miller said.

So, too, is Arizona power forward Lauri Markkanen, who picked up his second Pac-12 Player of the Week honor and some national awards for his performance in a sweep of the Washington road trip. The 7-foot freshman from Finland averaged 22.5 points and 12 rebounds in two games, grabbing a total of 13 offensive boards and scoring closer to the basket.

That has been an emphasis, despite his 45.7 percent accuracy from 3-point range.

"He didn't need to just make a bunch of 3-point shots to have a big offensive night," Miller said. "That is something we are working on to continue to establish."

Markkanen averages a team-high 15.7 points. Trier, wing Rawle Alkins (11.3 points per game), Ristic (11.2) and guard Kobi Simmons (10.8) are also double-digit scorers.

USC has six players averaging at least 9.0 points per game, led by center Chimezie Metu (14.2), Boatwright (14.1) and guard Elijah Stewart (13.4). Guard Jordan McLaughlin averages 12.7 points and 5.1 assists.

USC, though, is just 13 of 49 from 3-point range in its two-game skid.

"We have three of the top seven teams here back-to-back in a week-and-half stretch," Enfield said. "And if you're shooting 20-some percent from the 3-point line, you making it really hard on yourself."

Preview: Bulldogs (28-0) at Toreros (12-16)

Gonzaga enters Thursday night's game at San Diego as the top-ranked team in the nation with a 28-0 record while the struggling Toreros are just elated to be coming off a double-overtime win at Santa Clara on Saturday.

After losing 79-43 to Gonzaga (16-0 in the West Coast Conference) last month in Spokane, Wash., San Diego (12-16, 5-11) is looking for any confidence boost it can get. The game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion (capacity 5,100) is sold out, only the 15th time that has happened since the arena opened in the 2000-01 season.

"When you play a team like (Gonzaga), you have to be clicking on all cylinders and you have to execute the game plan to a 'T' and you have to make shots," San Diego coach Lamont Smith said. "We didn't do any of (that) and they took it to us (in Spokane). Hopefully we learned and hopefully we can get better and turn the page."

The gritty win at Santa Clara could at least help the Toreros' psyche. Sophomore guard Tyler Williams connected on a 17-foot jumper from the right elbow to give San Diego the victory. It snapped a five-game losing streak and also avenged San Diego's home loss to the Broncos by two points.

"We've been close in these types of games this season and it was great to get the win," Smith said. "We just stayed the course and kept to our game plan."

The game plan will be put to the ultimate test against Gonzaga, which dominated San Diego with its size advantage on the frontcourt.

Gonzaga outscored San Diego 50-16 in points in the paint in the previous matchup. The Toreros also had 15 turnovers that led to 19 points for the Bulldogs.

Johnathan Williams had 13 points and 12 rebounds and Nigel Williams-Goss led the Bulldogs with 25 points on 11-of-15 shooting.

The victory on Jan. 26 put Gonzaga atop the rankings because No. 1 Villanova and No. 2 Kansas lost that same day. The Bulldogs have taken care of business since that day to maintain the loftiest ranking.

The Bulldogs are beating opponents by an average of 23.7 points, tops in the nation. They are winning WCC games by 26.3 points. Gonzaga has won 21 straight games by double digits.

'We haven't taken a night off,' Gonzaga coach Mark Few said. 'That stands out.'

The Bulldogs are faced with that kind of challenge again in the WCC with San Diego entering the game with a losing record.

Gonzaga has used its defense, interior size with Williams, 7-foot-1 Przemek Karnowsky and 7-footer Przemek Karnowski and high-quality guard play from Williams-Goss to overcome any letdowns.

San Diego counters with a starting lineup that has no player taller than 6-7. Brett Bailey (a Spokane native who is averaging 15.9 points a game), Olin Carter III (15.2) and Cameron Neubauer (11.0) are the top three scorers for the Toreros. There aren't many scoring resources behind that trio.

In WCC games, the Toreros are only averaging 59.9 points a game. Gonzaga, by contrast, is averaging 86.

Preview: Gaels (24-3) at Waves (9-19)

Saint Mary's will try to add to its impressive win total when the 20th-ranked Gaels visit Pepperdine in a West Coast Conference game Thursday night at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, Calif.

Saint Mary's (24-3, 14-2 WCC) has won two in a row and nine of its last 10 games, the only blemish during that stretch being a 74-64 loss to top-ranked Gonzaga on Feb. 11. The Gaels, who will conclude the regular season at home against Santa Clara on Saturday, are two games behind Gonzaga in the WCC.

Pepperdine (9-19, 5-11) is tied with San Diego for seventh in the WCC. The Waves have lost their last two games after winning three in a row. The Waves are tied for seventh in the WCC.

Saint Mary's is coming off a 70-57 victory over BYU on Saturday. The Gaels shot 47.2 percent from the field and made 10 of 26 from 3-point range while holding the Cougars to 39.7-percent shooting and 4-of-14 shooting from beyond the arc.

"It's always tough to win up here," Saint Mary's coach Randy Bennett said. "BYU has a good team. We didn't turn the ball over and we shot it well and we were able to get some separation, which made it tough on them and we seemed to wear them out after that. We did a good job defensively on their guards."

Calvin Hermanson posted 17 points and six rebounds in the win over BYU. Evan Fitzner added 15 points and six rebounds. The two big men combined for seven of the team's 10 3-point goals. Their contributions were key on a night when standout Jock Landale was held to seven points and four rebounds due to foul trouble.

"Fitzner and Hermanson played well tonight and made the shots we needed," Bennett said. "... We are a little different team with Fitzner out there and the way he spaces the floor. Dane Pineau can play the five, but, overall, we just play differently with Fitzner. It's nice to have a Plan A and Plan B. Tonight, Landale got in foul trouble, so we had to play the other way, and, fortunately, Fitzner played well."

Pepperdine is coming off an 82-61 loss to rival Loyola Marymount on Saturday. Lamond Murray Jr. scored 18 points and passed Pepperdine legend Doug Christie for 17th place on the Waves' all-time scoring list. Nolan Taylor had a career-high 17 points.

The Waves had only eight scholarship players available for the game. Starters Chris Reyes (foot), Amadi Udenyi (Achilles) and Kameron Edwards (jaw) all missed the game.

Saint Mary's rolled to an 85-65 victory over Pepperdine when the teams met last month. Joe Rahon scored 22 points, Hermanson had 19 and Landale recorded a double-double, posting 15 points and 10 rebounds. Murray had 29 points for Pepperdine.

The Gaels shot a sizzling 56.9 percent from the field and made 7 of 18 from 3-point range in that contest. The Waves shot 45.8 percent and made 7 of 19 from long distance, but they were out-rebounded 38-22.
