  • Preview: Eagles (3-7) at Wildcats (11-0)
    Date: December 21, 2016 6:30 PM EDT

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- The reigning top-ranked Villanova Wildcats look to extend their winning streak to 18 games when they host American University on Wednesday night at The Pavilion.

The Wildcats won all six games in last year's NCAA Tournament en route to the program's second national championship in addition to the 11 victories thus far in 2016-17.

Villanova (11-0), which will also be in search of its 44th straight victory at its on-campus arena on the Main Line, captured its fourth consecutive Big 5 title with a 78-57 win over Temple on Dec. 13.

Villanova was ranked No. 1 for three weeks last February, so this isn't completely new.

"It's the hardest thing you have to face, it really is," Wildcats head coach Jay Wright said. "Thank god we went through it last year, and it was hard. When I say hard, it's a challenge and I'll take that challenge any day of the year.

"It is difficult and again, having Josh (Hart), Kris (Jenkins), Darryl (Reynolds), it takes the players to do it. The coach can only say it so much, these guys get their teammates prepared. They have much more impact on the team, even than I do and I don't know if you can come from what we did last year without doing it with our seniors.

"Without our guys, I'm not sure if we could do it. It wasn't easy."

Hart, a preseason National Player of the Year candidate, has been sensational in the month of December, averaging 25.0 points, 7.6 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game.

In Hart's last two games, he scored 37 points against then 23rd-ranked Notre Dame and 26 against the Owls with 18 coming in the second half. Hart has knocked down 20 of 33 shots in those last two games.

"We all believed Josh would develop into this kind of leader," Wright said. "But we thought it would take him a little longer. He had Arch (Ryan Arcidiacono) and Daniel (Ochefu) ahead of him for three years and is just a fun-loving guy. What he was doing when we were down was just bringing everybody together.

"In watching the La Salle tape, I lost count of how many times he grabbed (teammates) to encourage them, rub their head. He's just been an incredible leader."

American has struggled to a 3-7 start with a young team but it has won back-to-back games over Youngstown State and Maryland-Eastern Shore.

Freshman guard Sa'eed Nelson, a two-time Patriot League Rookie of the Week, scored 16 points in the Eagles' 61-58 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Monday.

"He's got a really good feel for the game," American head coach Mike Brennan told AU Hoop Talk. "He rarely makes bad decisions and has been a beast offensively and defensively."

Sophomore guard Delante Jones (12.2 ppg) and freshman forward Mark Gasperini (12.0 ppg) also average in double figures for the Eagles.

This will be the second game in American's history against a No. 1 team. On Dec. 12, 1984, American fell 86-64 against top-ranked Georgetown.

The Eagles are 2-59 all-time against Top 25 opponents in their history. The two wins came against No. 17 La Salle (68-62) on Feb. 24, 1971, and No. 5 Georgetown (62-61) on Dec. 15, 1982.

    • Preview: Wildcats (10-1) at Cardinals (10-1)
      Date: December 21, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Wednesday night's showdown between No. 6 Kentucky and No. 10 Louisville is sure to produce fireworks.

Admiring the Wildcats' up-tempo style, Louisville coach Rick Pitino said his Cardinals will play "ping-pong" with Kentucky Wednesday night at 7 p.m. ET in Louisville's KFC Yum! Center.

"We don't have the athletes that Kentucky has to play at that kind of pace," Pitino said Monday night. "We have athletes. We have enough athletes to play our style. Our front-court doesn't run as fast as their front-court does, but our wings can run, so we will do a lot of running. That's what the fans want to see so let's go play a ping-pong match."

If Louisville (10-1) tries to match Kentucky's speed it could be an advantage for the Wildcats (10-1). The average Kentucky offensive possession lasts just 13.8 seconds and they average 95.2 points per game.

"We have nobody as fast as (De'Aaron) Fox. We have nobody as fast as (Malik) Monk," Pitino said. "... We play fast, but not that fast."

That doesn't mean the Wildcats are in for an easy time. Coach John Calipari views the game as a mighty treacherous contest.

"Playing a top 10 team on the road on their court, where are we on December 21?" Calipari asked. "Love to win it, but let's really learn about where are we right now.

"Here's what I said to them and I'll say it this game: You do not have to be perfect, you do not even have to be great, but you gotta play. Because this team plays hard, they're competitive, they're physical, they're not afraid to bang. If you don't play you have no chance of winning."

Kentucky owns a 34-15 edge in the series, including an 8-1 mark since coach Calipari took over the program. But Calipari contends none of that matters when rival reunite.

"I don't think any of the past games have any bearing on this game," Calipari said. "When I'm coaching against a guy that has won some games against me, I'm not worried about the past. I'm just saying, 'How do we win this game?' I would say he's thinking the same way.

"I'm happy when it's over. Just get it done," Calipari said. "Everybody makes it life or death and it's not life or death ... it's worse than that. Just play the game, let's see what happens and let's go. We've got our league to deal with, he's got his league to deal with, let's just move on."

The Cardinals only average 78.5 points per game and have not allowed more than 71 points to any team this season.

The pace of Wednesday night's matchup is a chess game both Hall-of-Fame coaches will be monitoring closely.

"I'm not playing zone," Calipari said at his pregame press conference. The he looked into the camera and dead-panned, "I might in this game, Rick."

Pitino said he didn't have a "favorite moment" in the series, but he's learning to put the game in better perspective.

Pitino said Kentucky will be the most-talented team the Cardinals will face this season.

"Nobody has the athletes and the talent that Kentucky has," Pitino said. "They have great talent. That doesn't mean you can't beat them, but you just have to know what you are going up against. ... It is going to be a great basketball game."

The Wildcats won their first seven games, including a 69-48 drubbing of Michigan State, before losing to 97-92 to No. 2 UCLA on Dec. 3. Since then, Kentucky reeled off three more wins including Saturday's impressive 103-100 win over No. 8 North Carolina.

Kentucky is led by guards Monk (21.9 points per game) and De'Aaron Fox (15.9), both freshmen, and sophomore Isaiah Briscoe (15.9). The Wildcats also get 12.6 points and 7.9 rebounds per game from freshman center Bam Adebayo.

Monk is coming off a 47-point effort in Kentucky's 103-100 victory over No. 7 North Carolina in Las Vegas.

Louisville started the season with five straight wins including a 62-52 win over Wichita State before falling 66-63 to No. 4 Baylor in the Battle 4 Atlantis final on Nov. 25. The Cardinals rebounded with a 71-64 win over No. 15 Purdue and have since won four straight games.

With four players scoring between 9.5 and 11.7 points per game, the Cardinals are a very balanced attack. Sophomore guard Donovan Mitchell leads the way at 11.7 per game with junior point guard Quentin Snider (11.0) the only other Cardinal in double-figures. Louisville's defense is rated No. 1 in the nation by Ken Pomeroy and the Cardinals only allowing 59.4 points per game.

"We are going up against a team that is extremely well-coached, a tough team and we're playing them in a place where they just don't lose," Calipari said. "It is going to be very tough."

      • Preview: Panthers (5-5) at Tar Heels (10-2)
        Date: December 21, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina played one of the classics of the early part of the season in a showdown with Kentucky.

Now the No. 8 Tar Heels want to take that experience and turn it into victories.

The next chance for that comes Wednesday night at the Smith Center, where Northern Iowa will be the visiting team.

This will be the first game for the Tar Heels since a 103-100 loss to Kentucky on Saturday in Las Vegas.

"We were right there with one of the best teams in the country," North Carolina swingman Justin Jackson said.

North Carolina (10-2) has two games remaining before beginning Atlantic Coast Conference play, and with a full roster presumably available it could be a good opportunity to build on some of the things they picked up in the Kentucky game.

"I think that game showed us (we can be one of the best teams)," guard Joel Berry said after returning from a two-game absence because of an ankle injury.

North Carolina's offense was clicking to the tune of shooting 53 percent from the field, yet it was the only the fourth time under coach Roy Williams in 184 games of shooting 50 percent or better that the Tar Heels lost.

Still, Williams likes that pace and the scoring.

"We're going to run," Williams said. "We've got to run. We've got to get our big guys to run."

Last season, Northern Iowa won against then-No. 1 North Carolina 71-67 in the only previous meeting between the teams. That was scheduled as a homecoming game in Cedar Falls, Iowa, for then-senior guard Marcus Paige, who then missed the game with the Tar Heels because of an injury.

Northern Iowa (5-5) is coming off a 69-46 loss to Iowa on Saturday.

"There were some things we can take from that game and I think will help us against North Carolina," Panthers coach Ben Jacobson said. "North Carolina pushes the ball ... North Carolina is bigger and even a better rebounding team than Iowa is."

Jacobson said preparing the defense is of utmost importance, but that he's concerned about the team's offense.

In Northern Iowa's five losses, it shot less than 38 percent. In three of the losses, the Panthers failed to score more than 50 points.

"Now we've just got to find a little bit of rhythm to our offense," Jacobson said. "That's a group effort, honing in on a couple of things that we think will give guys direction, give them some confidence. We'll keep poking around to try to find the right stuff."

The Panthers have registered 17 victories against ranked Division I opponents and 14 of those have come since Jacobson joined the coaching staff in the 2001-02 season. Jacobson served as an assistant from 2001-06 before taking over as head coach.

Senior Jeremy Morgan, the preseason Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, leads the Panthers in scoring (17.7), rebounding (7.5), assists (3.3), blocked shots (1.6), steals (2.7), 3-pointers made (28 and free throws made (41). He needs 35 points to reach the 1,000-point mark in his career.

        • Preview: Tigers (8-2) at Gamecocks (9-1)
          Date: December 21, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

PJ Dozier doesn't need to be briefed on the significance when South Carolina and Clemson square off on the basketball court.

The Gamecocks' sophomore grew up in Columbia and his father, Perry, and uncle, Terry, both played at South Carolina in the late 1980s.

So Dozier is well-versed in what is at stake when the 22nd ranked Gamecocks (9-1) host Clemson on Wednesday.

"I definitely understand the importance of winning that game," Dozier said at a press conference. "The next game is always the most important game we play.

"We know that it is a game that we have to win, not only for us for our record but for the fans as well."

The Tigers (8-2) bring a six-game winning streak into the contest after notching a 67-54 win at Alabama on Saturday in their first true road contest of the season.

Clemson's chances of defeating South Carolina may depend on well it defends the red-hot Dozier.

The 6-foot-6 guard will be looking to reach 20 points for the fifth consecutive game. He scored a career-best 23 as the Gamecocks posted a 77-66 road win over South Florida on Saturday.

"PJ continues to develop into a real, real good basketball player," South Carolina coach Frank Martin said at a press conference.

Dozier's run has been timely as leading scorer Sindarius Thornwell (18.7 average) has missed the past three games due to a suspension for violating team rules. Thornwell will again sit out Wednesday and isn't expected to be reinstated until early January.

Meanwhile, Dozier is averaging 21 points over the past four games while doing more than picking up the slack. The spurt has raised his season average to 14.5.

Dozier also is making superb contributions on the defensive end while helping South Carolina limit opponents to 57.7 points and 34.6 percent shooting from the field. He leads the SEC with 24 steals and has recorded three or more on five occasions.

Clemson features a solid player of its own in senior forward Jaron Blossomgame, who is averaging 17.6 points per game.

Blossomgame ranks 18th in school history with 1,325 points, and needs 17 points to pass Larry Nance (1977-81), the school legend who went on to be a three-time NBA All-Star.

Martin has gotten a close look at Blossomgame during his tenure and said is it tough to deal with his tenacity.

"What makes him a matchup problem is that he is a very aggressive player," Martin said. "There are some guys who are multitalented who are unaggressive that are easy to deal with. He's just very aggressive and goes after that ball. And when the ball is in his hands, he goes after the rim and those guys are hard to deal with."

The Tigers aren't a one-man gang as four other players are also scoring in double digits.

Junior guard Gabe DeVoe and senior guard Avry Holmes are both averaging 11.2 points and share the team lead of 21 3-pointers. Junior forward Donte Grantham averages 10.8 points and sophomore point guard Shelton Mitchell is at 10.7 after impressing coach Brad Brownell with a career-high 18 points versus Alabama.

"He played with great poise," said Brownell, "the mark of a good point guard."

Senior center Sidy Djitte also is a solid contributor and is averaging 8.7 points and a team-best 10.0 rebounds.

The Tigers are limiting opponents to 32.3 percent shooting from 3-point range and that could pose troubles for South Carolina guard Duane Notice.

Notice, who averages 11.1 points, is a streaky shooter. The senior went 1 of 18 from the field in a three-half stretch against Seton Hall and South Florida -- including 1 of 11 from 3-point range -- before going 4-for-4 from 3-point range in the second half against South Florida to help the Gamecocks notch the comeback victory.

"I had the confidence and the green light to keep shooting because of the work that I put in," Notice said at a press conference. "I always tell myself I just need one to go in. I feel like once one goes in, I will make every shot after that."

South Carolina has won the past two meetings and four of the past six.

Brownell is hoping the momentum of the Alabama win will carry over.

"It was big. That's what you got to do in road games," Brownell said. "Make big shots, you know the home team's going to make a run or two."

          • Preview: Coyotes (9-5) at Bulldogs (11-0)
            Date: December 21, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

No. 7 Gonzaga will look to equal its best start in school history, a 12-0 record in 1944, when the Bulldogs host South Dakota on Wednesday night.

The 11-0 start for Mark Few's team is already the best since the program joined the NCAA for the 1958-59 season, topping the 9-0 mark of 2012-13.

Tennessee coach Rick Barnes, whose team lost to Gonzaga 86-76 in Nashville, Tenn., on Sunday said the Bulldogs have a shot at running the table in the regular season.

"I think he's got as good a team as he's ever had," Barnes said of Few. "I think he's going to become an even bigger story in college basketball because if you look ahead, he's always done tremendous things with his team in the league and he could be the first time in a long time that you've got a team capable of being undefeated heading into postseason play."

No. 19 Saint Mary's and traditionally tough opponent BYU in the West Coast Conference might have a say in that, but for now, Few is concentrating on ending the nonconference portion of the schedule feeling good about his team.

Entering the Tennessee game on Sunday, Gonzaga hadn't played since beating Akron Dec. 10. The Bulldogs but looked strong as they scored the first eight points and never trailed. They led 27-6 on a jumper by forward Zach Collins with 12:06 left, 43-29 at halftime and 64-48 midway through the second half.

"I thought they did good, especially the way we started the first half," Few said. "Usually when you come out of finals like this, you're a little bit concerned about losing rhythm. We had some pretty good rhythm going into finals. Gave them several days off, I was a little bit worried about that. They responded."

South Dakota (9-5) of the Summit League is that last nonconference obstacle. The Coyotes are off to their best start since joining Division I for the 2008-09 campaign. They have lost in true road games to Nebraska and Portland, but they were competitive in each.

The Coyotes lost 73-61 in Lincoln, Neb., after cutting a 26-4 deficit to two points in the second half. They were defeated 85-82 at Portland last Friday on a last-second 3-point shot.

Two days after that setback, South Dakota regrouped to defeat Montana State 80-68 in Bozeman, Mont., scoring 20 unanswered points as part of a 25-3 run. Former Air Force guard Matt Mooney, a sophomore, scored a career-high 28 points and junior guard Trey Dickerson, formerly of Iowa, added a career-high 14 points.

The victory snapped a five-game losing streak away from South Dakota. The Coyotes are finishing a stretch of three road games in six days.

"Shout out to our whole squad," Dickerson said. "Happy to get on a (winning) streak now. Gonzaga next. Love my squad. Great way to bounce back on the road (rallying to beat Montana State)."

Mooney (14.7 points a game) leads four Coyotes who are averaging in double digits.

Gonzaga will have a decided size advantage with South Dakota starting nobody taller than 6-foot-7. The Bulldogs will counter with 7-1, 300-pound center Przemek Karnowski, who averages 12.2 points and a team-high 6.5 rebounds per game.

The Bulldogs also have 6-9 power forward Johnathan Williams (shooting 57.7 percent from the field), Collins, a 7-foot reserve center (leads the WCC by shooting 69.2 percent) and 6-10 reserve power forward Killian Tillie (4.0 rebounds per game).

            • Preview: Cavaliers (9-1) at Golden Bears (9-2)
              Date: December 21, 2016 10:00 PM EDT

For college basketball fans that value the importance of defense, Wednesday night's matchup between No. 12 Virginia and California at Berkeley, Calif., will be one that isn't to be missed.

Almost a year ago to the date, Virginia edged California 63-62 in overtime in Charlottesville, Va.

The Cavaliers travel to the West Coast for an important non-conference game with the Golden Bears before starting their ACC schedule with one of the best defenses in the country -- and maybe one of head coach Tony Bennett's best since he's arrived at Virginia.

Four of Virginia's 10 opponents have been held to 40 points or fewer, and if you include the Cavaliers' win over Iowa, five have been held to 41 or fewer. Bennet's squad leads the country in scoring defense at just under 47 points per game allowed.

California enters the game with a 9-2 record but will face by far its toughest opponent. The Golden Bears also boast a stout defense, surrendering just under 60 points per game, and have not allowed more than 65 points in any of their nine wins.

Three players are averaging in double figures scoring for California. Sophomore standout Ivan Rabb will get his second and final shot at a win over Virginia after California dropped a heartbreaker at John Paul Jones Arena last season. Rabb is averaging 15 points and nine rebounds per game and will be a handful inside for the Cavaliers.

Rabb scored just nine points in the meeting last season but did pull down a team-high 12 rebounds. Fellow frontcourt mate Jabari Bird is averaging just under 16 points per game and six rebounds per game.

Virginia has maintained its balanced offensive approach and put four players in double figures in Saturday's win over Robert Morris. Sophomore Jack Salt scored a career-high 10 points in the win and will get the chance to play in front of his family for the first time in the Golden State.

"I've got eight family members that are going to be out there, so I'm pretty excited," the New Zealand native said. "I haven't seen them for a while. I'll get to stay with them in California for a few days, which will be nice. I haven't seen them for maybe eight months, so I am really looking forward to seeing my family."

Senior guard London Perrantes will also get the chance to play in front of some family members. The 6-foot-2 point guard, a Los Angeles native, scored 10 points and dished out six assists in the Cavaliers' win last season.

"I am glad we are going to Cal for London (Perrantes)'s sake, Jack (Salt)'s family will be there as well," Bennett said. "I think the competition will step up from here on out and we will have to be ready."

              • Preview: Broncos (3-7) at Bruins (12-0)
                Date: December 21, 2016 11:00 PM EDT

UCLA has an opportunity to do something it hasn't done in more than 20 years when the second-ranked Bruins play host to Western Michigan on Wednesday at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles.

If the Bruins (12-0) beat the Broncos (3-7), they will conclude nonconference play with a perfect record for the first time since the 1994-95 season. That team went 9-0 in nonconference competition and also fared pretty well in the postseason, winning six consecutive NCAA Tournament games to capture the program's 11th national championship.

"I know what I have," UCLA coach Steve Alford said. "I've got a really good group of guys to coach, (and) they're a pretty good basketball team right now. We're trying to become a great basketball team, and that's a process. That's a journey."

That journey has already produced wins over Nebraska, Texas A&M, then-No. 1 Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio State. The Bruins are leading the nation in field-goal percentage (55.4), assists (285) and assists per game (23.8). They are second in the nation in scoring, averaging 96.9 points per contest.

The Bruins might be at their best when they're running and gunning, but they've also survived tough tests against bigger, more physical opponents that tried to dictate a slower tempo. Ohio State had some success with that strategy early in Saturday's CBS Sports Classic, but the Bruins pulled away to win 86-73.

"We've seen a lot of different styles and a lot of teams have done different things to us," Alford said. "I don't know if it's all of them, but I think we've gone against enough that, as we've got one more 40-minute task before we get into league play, I think we're best prepared."

T.J. Leaf is averaging 17.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game for UCLA. Isaac Hamilton averages 17.3 points per contest. Four other players are also scoring in double figures for the Bruins, including Lonzo Ball, a freshman point guard who averages 14.3 points and 8.7 assists.

The Broncos are also in the midst of a season they won't soon forget, but for all the wrong reasons. They lost six of their first eight games and then learned that one of their own had been implicated in a homicide investigation.

On Dec. 9, Joeviair Kennedy was arrested on suspicion of murder in the death of Jacob Ryan Jones, a 19-year-old Western Michigan student who was shot to death Dec. 8. Western Michigan coach Steve Hawkins called Jones' death "a devastating loss for our university" and a "devastating tragedy for everybody involved."

Kennedy has been removed from the team, suspended from the university and scrubbed from the team's website. A day after Kennedy was taken into custody, the Broncos banded together to beat James Madison University 74-67.

"In any adversity, the basketball court for a competitor is therapeutic," Hawkins said. "It really wasn't that hard for those guys once we were on the court. They handled it very well."

Western Michigan is led by Thomas Wilder, who is averaging 16.1 points per game. Tucker Haymond averages 13.1 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.9 assists.

Former UCLA standout Larry Farmer will return to Pauley Pavilion as an assistant coach with the Broncos. Farmer was a member of UCLA's national championship teams in 1971, 1972 and 1973. He had two stints as an assistant coach at UCLA before returning to serve as head coach from 1982-84.

                    • Wednesday’s best 13 games

Kentucky is 8-1 vs Louisville since Calipari has been coach of Wildcats. LOS ANGELES (AP) - Bryce Alford scored 22 points, Aaron Holiday had 16 and TJ Leaf added 14 as UCLA completed a perfect preseason.

The last time the Bruins (13-0) went undefeated in the preseason was also the last time they won the NCAA title (1994-95).
