      • Top 25 Capsules
        December 3, 2016

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) Isaac Hamilton scored 19 points, T.J. Leaf had 17 with 13 rebounds and No. 11 UCLA shot 53 percent to beat No. 1 Kentucky 97-92 on Saturday, its second upset of the top-ranked Wildcats in as many years.

The Bruins (9-0) matched their season scoring average to win this showdown of college basketball's winningest schools in their first-ever visit to Rupp Arena, and end the Wildcats' 42-game home winning streak. Kentucky (7-1) cut a 14-point second-half deficit to 95-92 on Derek Willis' 3-pointer with 8.3 seconds remaining but Bryce Alford's two free throws with 7.4 left sealed the victory.

Besides hitting 35 of 66 from the field, UCLA outrebounded Kentucky 41-38 and limited the Wildcats to 41 percent shooting. It was the most points scored against a Kentucky team coached by John Calipari.

Malik Monk had 24 points and De'Aaron Fox added 20 for Kentucky.

        No. 2 VILLANOVA 88, SAINT JOSEPH'S 57

VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) - Josh Hart had 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for his first career triple-double to lead Villanova.

Hart, the preseason Big East player of the year, continued to show why he is among the best players in the nation. Hart hit three 3s and made 6 of 10 shots from the field overall.

Top-ranked Kentucky's loss to UCLA on Saturday means the defending national champion Wildcats should slide into the top spot in the next AP Top 25 poll.

Villanova (8-0) won its 16th straight Big 5 game against Philly-based teams La Salle, Penn, Drexel, Temple and the Hawks.

Kris Jenkins scored 20 points for the Wildcats.

Lamarr Kimble led the Hawks (3-4) with 15 points.

        No. 4 KANSAS 89, STANFORD 74

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - Frank Mason III scored 20 points and Devonte Graham delivered an early 3-point barrage and finished with 15 for Kansas.

Josh Jackson and Svi Mykhailiuk added 15 points apiece for the Jayhawks (7-1), who overcame a monster game from the Cardinal's Reid Travis to win their 44th straight at Allen Fieldhouse.

Travis had a career-best 29 points and nine rebounds for Stanford (6-3), doing most of his damage at the free throw line. The career 54 percent free throw shooter was 19 of 22, breaking the school record for makes set by Todd Lichti against UC Santa Barbara during the 1987-88 season.

        No. 5 DUKE 94, MAINE 55

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Luke Kennard scored a career-best 35 points and freshman Jayson Tatum finished with 10 points in his long-awaited debut for Duke.

Amile Jefferson added a career-high 20 points for the Blue Devils (8-1), who played without a true point guard.

Preseason All-America Grayson Allen and freshman Frank Jackson - their starting backcourt for the past four games - were held out. Allen has been dealing with a lingering toe injury, while Jackson has not had any publicly disclosed injuries.

Even without those two, the Blue Devils had plenty of offensive punch, shooting 60 percent in routing the struggling Black Bears (2-6). Ilker Er scored all 20 of his points in the first half for Maine.

        No. 25 WEST VIRGINIA 66, No. 6 VIRGINIA 57

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Esa Ahmad hit a tie-breaking 3-pointer with 1:28 remaining and No. 25 West Virginia closed the game on an 11-2 run to end Virginia's 24-game home winning streak.

Jevon Carter led West Virginia (6-1) with 11 points and Nathan Adrian had 10.

Darius Thompson scored 14 points to lead Virginia (7-1), but the Cavaliers never got into any kind of rhythm offensively. West Virginia had a lot of do with that, forcing 14 turnovers and converting them into 18 points. Virginia scored just five points off eight Mountaineers miscues.

Ahmad's 3-pointer was just the fourth of the game for West Virginia in 15 tries, but Tarik Phillip followed a miss by Virginia with an inside basket, making it 60-55, and Virginia ran out of time as the Mountaineers finished it off at the free throw line. They were 16 for 19 from the stripe overall.

        No. 9 BAYLOR 76, No. 7 XAVIER 61

WACO, Texas (AP) - Manu Lecomte scored 24 points and Baylor took over in the second half.

Johnathan Motley added 17 points and eight rebounds for the Bears (8-0), who have beaten three Top 10 teams in the same season for first time.

Xavier (7-1) was up 51-50 when Edmond Sumner, who had 19 points, hit a 3-pointer with 11:15 to play. The Musketeers then went almost 9 minutes before making another field goal.

Lecomte, the former Miami transfer, put Baylor ahead to stay with two free throws. By time he made a jumper with 3:36 left, it capped a 21-2 run to put the Bears up 71-53.

Trevon Blueitt, who led the Musketeers with 23 points, made a 3-pointer with 2:33 for their first basket since their last lead.

        No. 8 GONZAGA 69, No. 16 ARIZONA 62

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Przemek Karnowski scored 18 points and Gonzaga defeated Arizona in the inaugural Hoophall LA doubleheader at Staples Center.

Josh Perkins added 16 points for the Zags (8-0), who beat the Wildcats (6-2) for the first time since 2011 after losing six of the previous seven matchups.

Arizona freshman Rawle Alkins scored 16 points and 7-foot freshman Lauri Markkanen had 14 points and eight rebounds. Dusan Ristic, a fellow 7-footer, added 12 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Kobi Simmons, who was averaging 13.0 points, shot 1 of 9 and finished with two points.

Karnowski and Perkins combined to score Gonzaga's first 17 points of the second half, extending its lead to 53-40.

        No. 10 CREIGHTON 82, AKRON 70

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Marcus Foster scored 17 of his season-high 27 points in the opening half, including 13 of Creighton's first 16.

Cole Huff added 16 points for Creighton (8-0), and Maurice Watson scored 14 points and matched his career high with 13 assists.

Kwan Cheatham Jr. had 17 points and seven rebounds to lead the Zips (6-2). They lost for the first time in seven games.

        No. 14 LOUISVILLE 79, GRAND CANYON 70

PHOENIX (AP) - Deng Adel scored 15 points, V.J. King and Ray Spalding added 14 each, and Louisville labored most of Saturday night before pulling out a 79-70 win over Grand Canyon.

Louisville (7-1) struggled to find a rhythm offensively in the first half before eventually wearing down the smaller Antelopes to escape the desert with a harder-than-expected win. The Cardinals made 17 of 31 of shots in the second half and had a 44-22 advantage in the paint to pull away.

Missing three starters, Grand Canyon (3-4) led by a point at halftime behind flashy guard DeWayne Russell and kept the Cardinals close until the midpoint of the second half. Russell had a career-high 42 points on 14-of-27 shooting.

        No. 15 PURDUE 90, MOREHEAD ST. 56

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Freshman guard Carsen Edwards scored 16 points, and Purdue made 11 3-pointers in the first half.

The Boilermakers (6-2), coming off a Wednesday loss at No. 14 Louisville in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, used a 15-0 first-half run to stretch a 10-9 lead to 25-9, and Purdue continued to pull away.

Dakota Mathias added 14 points, and Caleb Swanigan and P.J. Thompson had 13 each for Purdue.

Miguel Dicent had 11 points for Morehead State (2-5), which played without coach Sean Woods, who has been suspended with pay since Nov. 22, when the university launched an official investigation into Woods' treatment of players.

        No. 17 WISCONSIN 90, OKLAHOMA 70

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Nigel Hayes scored 28 points for Wisconsin.

The Badgers (7-2) trailed Oklahoma (5-2) the entire first half, but once they found their touch from outside the 3-point line, they put the game away.

After hitting just 4 of 13 3-point attempts in the first half, the Badgers connected on 8 of 14 in the second. That included three in their decisive run.

Rashard Odomes put Oklahoma up 58-57 on a 12-footer before Bronson Koenig answered with a 3 that started a 20-3 run.

Koenig, Ethan Happ and D'Mitrik Trice all scored 16 points.

Odomes led Oklahoma with 17 points.

        No. 18 BUTLER 82, CENTRAL ARKANSAS 58

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Kelan Martin finished with 30 points and six rebounds, and Tyler Wideman added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Butler.

The Bulldogs (8-0) scored 24 points off 16 Central Arkansas turnovers. The Bulldogs scored nearly half their points down low, finishing with 32 in the paint. Butler capitalized on 10 offensive rebounds by finishing the game with 16 second-chance points.

The Bulldogs' largest lead was 25 points with 4:58 left to play. Butler's offense relied on ball movement as 22 of its 31 field goals came by way of an assist.

Jordan Howard led Central Arkansas (1-7) with 20 points and Derreck Brooks finished with 15.

        PROVIDENCE 63, No. 21 RHODE ISLAND 60

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Jalen Lindsey scored nine of his 13 points in the second half and Providence handed Rhode Island its third loss in four games.

Kyron Cartwright had 19 points and eight assists and Rodney Bullock scored 17 points for the Friars, who beat their cross-state rival for the seventh straight time. Providence (6-2) trailed 47-40 midway through the second half when Lindsey hit 3-pointer and followed with two free throws during a 7-0 run to tie it.

Hassan Martin had 14 points and 17 rebounds for Rhode Island (5-3).

        No. 22 SYRACUSE 77, NORTH FLORIDA 71

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Andrew White scored a season-high 26 points and Frank Howard had 10 points, a career-high 13 assists and just two turnovers to lead Syracuse.

Freshman Tyus Battle, inserted into the starting lineup for the first time this season, had a career-high 19 points, 16 in the second half. Dajuan Coleman had a career-high 15 points, including five down the stretch, and six rebounds for the Orange (5-2) who broke a two-game losing streak.

White, a fifth-year transfer from Nebraska, hit 7 of 13 from beyond the 3-point line. Battle was 4 of 5 from beyond the arc.

Dallas Moore led the Ospreys (3-7) with 30 points, 22 in the second half.

        No. 23 OREGON 128, SAVANNAH STATE 59

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Tyler Dorsey scored a career-high 29 points, Dillon Brooks had 22 and Oregon set a school scoring record.

The Ducks (7-2) eclipsed their previous high of 121 points against Portland in 1970 and had seven players score in double figures for the first time in nine seasons.

Freshman Payton Pritchard, who had 13 of Oregon's 36 assists, broke the scoring mark with a 3-pointer with 2:45 left.

Savannah State, which came in averaging 40 3-point attempts per game, went 11 for 50 from beyond the arc in its fourth straight loss.

Dexter McClanahan led the Tigers (2-8) with 13 points.

        • Sunday’s six-pack

Six most popular picks for Week 13 in the Westgate Super Contest

          — Detroit Lions +6 (564)

          — Atlanta Falcons -4 (516)

          — New Jersey Giants +6.5 (515)

          — Green Bay Packers -6.5 (447)

          — Seattle Seahawks -6.5 (417)

          — Washington Redskins +2.5 (408)

          Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday……

          13) UCLA 97, Kentucky 92— Wildly entertaining, 83-possession game where Bruins showed they’re a legit top-10 team this year. Six of seven Bruins who played double figure minutes scored double figure points.

Both teams basically played seven guys, which is typical of modern college hoops; teams have very little quality depth, so injuries have a lot more impact now.

          12) Alabama 54, Florida 16— Crimson Tide is so much better than anyone else this season, it isn’t funny. Doesn’t guarantee they’ll win the 4-team playoff, but it does guarantee they’ll be a heavy favorite in the national semifinal.

          11) Life comes full circle: Yesterday was Verne Lundquist’s last SEC title game broadcast; the first football game he ever worked on network TV was a 1974 game involving Kent State, who at the time had a graduate assistant coach named Nick Saban.

          10) Brown University has a basketball player named Steven Spieth who went over the 1,000-career point mark earlier this week. He is Jordan Spieth’s younger brother and he lists golf as one of his hobbies. On Brown’s sports website, his older brother is barely mentioned.

          9) Maryland 71, Oklahoma State 70— Terrapins are now 26-5 in Melo Trimble era in games decided by six or less points. Maryland ended this game on a 23-10 run.

          8) Because there are 40 bowl teams and only 128 I-A college football teams, there have to be some under-.500 teams playing in bowls. There will be three such teams this year:

Mississippi State and North Texas are 5-7, Hawai’i is 6-7- they’ll go bowling.

          7) Northwestern 80, DePaul 64— This game was 54-18 at halftime, Fifty-four to eighteen.

If you’re a Big East team and you’re down 36 at the half to Northwestern, there are major issues. Why can’t a Big East team in Chicago win? The Big East team in Omaha wins; the team in Indianapolis wins; the team in Cincinnati wins; why not DePaul?

DePaul hasn’t been good for years; last time they were in NCAA tournament was 2004.

          6) West Virginia 66, Virginia 57— Excellent road win for the Mountaineers, who got whacked by the Cavaliers 70-54 on a neutral floor LY.

          5) Baylor 76, Xavier 61— Why shouldn’t the Bears be #1 in the country this week? They’re 8-0, have wins over Oregon-VCU-Louisville-Xavier. Real good team.

          4) Seattle Mariners signed lefty reliever Marc Rzepczynski to a 2-year, $11M contract. Here is how Mr Rzepczynski fared LY:

He appeared in 70 games, faced 215 batters, so he faced three hitters a game and appeared in less than half his teams’ games. 47.4% of the hitters he faced were right-handed- they had an on-base % of .422 against him- not good. He was tougher on lefties (.265 BA, .322 OB%), but he is making $5.5M a year and is basically an average situational lefty.

Moral of the Story: If you have a little son who likes baseball, teach him to throw lefty.

          3) Omaha 98, Iowa 89— Big 14 teams aren’t supposed to lose at home to Summit League teams; at least Indiana’s loss to Fort Wayne was a road game.

          2) Temple 34, Navy 10— Matt Rhule is 28-23 as coach of Temple, 20-7 the last two years. Temple, the team that went 24-100 from 1996-2006. Rhule is 28-23.

How does this guy not have a better, higher-paying job by now?

1— Jeff Walz is the women’s basketball coach at Louisville; at a news conference earlier this week, he launched into an extended monologue about players working hard and other players who think they’re entitled to play, just because they’re…….there. It was good stuff, biting without sounding bitter.

Sports is supposed to prepare young people for real life; in real life people who work harder are generally the ones who succeed more, and the sooner young people learn that, the better off they’ll be.

Unless they inherit a fortune, then forget everything I just wrote.

                          • Top 25 roundup: No. 3 Tar Heels rout Radford
                            December 4, 2016

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Sophomore guard Kenny Williams scored a career-high 19 points as No. 3 North Carolina blew out Radford 95-50 Sunday.

The Tar Heels cruised from the start just four days after their lone loss of the season at Indiana.

The disturbing part for North Carolina came when standout guard Joel Berry tumbled to the court with 17:36 remaining. He hobbled to the locker room with what was later revealed as a sprained left ankle. Berry didn't return to action. He finished with five points after entering the game averaging 16 points per game.

Kennedy Meeks had 13 points, Isaiah Hicks chipped in 12 points and Tony Bradley had 10 points and 11 rebounds for North Carolina (8-1). Justin Cousin scored 14 points and Christian Bradford tallied 13 points for Radford (3-5).

No. 13 Indiana 83, Southeast Missouri State 55

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Hoosiers sophomore center Thomas Bryant chest-bumped equally excitable coach Tom Crean during a rout of the Redhawks.

Indiana (7-1) was closing in on a 13-point halftime lead when the 6-foot-10 Bryant hit the floor to try to recover a loose ball but the referee ruled the hustling big man out of bounds. Bryant jumped up, clapped his hands, spotted the clapping Crean shouting encouragement and responded in kind with an enthusiastic chest bump.

Junior point guard Robert Johnson scored a game-high 17 points for a balanced Indiana squad. Freshman forward De'Ron Davis scored 14 off the bench for a second consecutive game, his best college outputs so far. Southeast Missouri State (4-4) got a team-high 16 points from freshman guard Denzel Mahoney.

No. 20 South Carolina 70, Florida International 54

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Stingy defense and hot perimeter shooting from Duane Notice and PJ Dozier kept the Gamecocks unblemished.

Notice and Dozier combined for eight 3-pointers and 47 points, while the defense forced 23 turnovers and limited the Golden Panthers to 41.3 percent shooting.

Notice gunned in a game-high 27, canning 6-of-10 shots from behind the arc, while Dozier finished with 20 points and seven rebounds in just 22 minutes as the Gamecocks upped their record to 8-0, their second straight 8-0 start. Eric Nottage paced the Panthers (3-6) with 20 points, while forward Michael Kessens scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

                            • Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday…….

Broncos 20, Jaguars 10— Jaguars have now lost seven games in a row; QB Bortles threw his 11th career pick-6 in this game- he has 10 career wins. Jags are -16 in turnovers their last eight games. First career win for rookie QB Paxton Lynch. AFC South underdogs are 7-13 vs spread, 2-6 at home.

Chiefs 29, Falcons 28— Eric Berry scored 8 points; he had a pick-6 in last 1:00 of first half when score was tied, then scored game-winning two points on a pick-2 in 4th quarter, after Falcons had taken a 28-27 lead. Atlanta also gave up a TD on a 55-yard fake punt. Over is 10-2 in Falcon games this season. Not a good day at all for the Atlanta coaches.

Packers 21, Texas 13— You say Texans should struggle in cold weather, being a dome team and all, but QB Osweiler grew up in Montana; shouldn’t he be used to it? Houston is 1-5 on road, 1-4 as road underdogs, losing away games by 27-18-18-7-8 points- its not the cold, they’re just bad on the road.

Bengals 32, Eagles 14— Philly has now lost seven of last nine games after its 3-0 start; Eagles lost last six road games, are 1-4 as road underdogs this year, losing away games by 1-7-6-5-11-18 points.

As far as rookie QB’s go, here are some W-L records of rookie QB’s:
John Elway 4-6, Troy Aikman 0-11, Eli Manning 1-6, Peyton Manning 3-13, Dan Marino 7-2. Oddly enough, Marino is only one of those five who never won a Super Bowl.

Lions 28, Saints 13— Didn’t see Sean Payton celebrating much on the sidelines today. Detroit is now 8-4, atop NFC North; this was first game all year they didn’t trail in 4th quarter. Lions are 4-1 as road underdogs this year. Last six Detroit games stayed under total.

Bears 26, 49ers 6— On a snowy day in Windy City, 49ers completed 5 of 15 passes for a net of six yards. Bears had six sacks in a game where neither side completed a pass in first quarter, but Chicago wound up 11-18/184 passing. Under is 4-1-1 in Chicago home games.

Patriots 26, Rams 10— My three favorite football movies:
                              1) Any Given Sunday 2) Invincible 3) Friday Night Lights

It is accurate to say that Sunday afternoon wasn’t a happy one in my living room.

On a happier note, some Christmas trivia: the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree in New York City is 94 feet tall and weighs over 30,000 pounds.

Ravens 38, Dolphins 6— Miami’s 6-game win streak was put to an emphatic end- this game was 24-0 at half; Ravens have won four of last five games- they’ve allowed 11.4 pts/game in last five home games.

Raiders 38, Bills 24— Buffalo led 24-9 halfway thru third quarter but got outscored 29-0 from that point on. On their last six drives, Oakland ran 34 plays for 230 yards and four TD’s, with two short TD drives of 38-16 yards. Over is 10-2 in Raider games this season.

Buffalo was -2 in turnovers; teams that were -2 or worse in turnovers are 7-64 in the NFL this season.

Buccaneers 28, Chargers 21— Tampa Bay has won four straight road games for first time ever; they’re 5-1 on road this year, NFC South non-divisional road underdogs are 12-2 vs spread this season, 9-1 on road.

Bucs are tied with Atlanta atop NFC South and would be the #2 Wild Card now; as for San Diego, sounds like they’re moving to the new stadium in LA, which opens in 2019. They need to draft a QB in April, someone who will be in place as a starter when they try to sell tickets in their new location.

Cardinals 31, Redskins 23— Washington’s loss drops them out of the playoff picture, for now; they’re half-game behind the Wild Cards. Arizona was 10-16 on third down, and didn’t turn the ball over; they had turned it over nine times in previous four games. Over is 10-2 in Redskin games this season.

Steelers 24, Giants 14— Pittsburgh won its third straight game, allowing total of 30 points- they’re 4-1 as home favorites this year. Giants had 6-game win streak snapped, in game where Victor Cruz had zero targets. Under is 7-2 in Giants’ last nine games.
