    • Wednesday’s games

Towson State led by 13 at Maryland Sunday with 14:27 left, lost by 5; Tigers are 2-1 with all three games on road- they start three juniors, one senior. Towson is #64 in experience; they’re shooting just 29.1% on arc but force turnovers 20% of time. Boston College is 2-1 but hasn’t played anyone ranked above #215; they lost at home to #314 Nicholls State. Eagles start a freshman and two sophs. A CAA team favored on road over an ACC team? CAA teams are 12-14 vs spread.

Arkansas scored 84.3 pts/game in beating three decent teams to open season; they were down 17 in last game vs Tex-Arlington, won by 4. Razorbacks are #19 experience team; they outscored UTA 24-9 on line; Hogs made 44.4% on arc so far- this is their first road game. Minnesota scored 85.5 pts/game in winning four home games; young Gophers are playing #72 pace- they’ve got two top 100 wins, beating Tex-Arlington by 17, St John’s by 6.

Middle Tennessee State beat Toledo by 8 LY in finals of Alaskan Shootout; Blue Raiders split pair of D-I home games to start this season, lost to Tennessee State by 11 after beating Murray State by 6. MTSU is shooting just 57% on foul line so far. Toledo is 2-1 vs decent teams, with three games decided by total of 10 points- their loss was by point to St Joe’s. Toledo starts four seniors; they won at Wright State. C-USA teams are 17-13 vs spread. MAC teams are 16-15.

Oregon State misses graduated star Gary Payton Jr; they scored 59 pts/game in losing last couple games, to Lamar/Nevada. Beavers are turning ball over 27.4% of time, 7th-worst in country- they’ve got only one senior who plays and he’s a 7-footer. Tulsa lost 7 of top 8 scorers from LY’s team; Hurricane lost by 27 at Wichita, also lost at home to Jacksonville State- they’re turning ball over 22.6% of time. Tulsa starts a freshman and three juniors- they’re shooting 55.2% on line.

Wyoming is 3-0 with a 73-72 win at Montana (were down 9 with 9:27 left); Cowboys scored 75 pts/game in first two games vs D-I teams- they start two sophs, three juniors. Pacific lost couple road games (UCLA, Irvine) but upset Green Bay in its only home game; Tigers start four seniors, unusual for new coach- they have zero blocked shots in three games. Mountain West teams are 12-6 SU in last 18 games with WCC teams, 2-4 vs spread when an underdog.

      Maui Classic

Tennessee is one of 20 least experienced teams in country; they’re playing pace #34. Vols played six guys 23:00+ yesterday, rallying back from down 17 to take lead before losing to Wisconsin by 12- they’re forcing turnovers 22% of time, but still give up 83.3 pts/game. Oregon was also down big yesterday, rallied but fell short vs Georgetown. Ducks got star Brooks back- he played 13:00. Six other Oregon kids played 26+ minutes. Pac-12 teams won seven of last eight games with SEC teams. Pac-12 teams are 16-17 against the spread.

Wisconsin has its whole team back from LY; they blew a 17-point lead yesterday, still won by 12 over a more athletic team- they used four kids 29:00+. Badgers start 4 seniors; play 4th-slowest pace in country and have only made 32% of 3’s so far. Georgetown was up 17 at half vs Oregon, hung on for win; Hoyas lost at home to Maryland/Ark State; their last three games were decided by total of 11 points. Pryor had 26 yesterday; he is Hoyas’ only senior who plays- they forced turnovers 26% of time so far- interesting matchup here against Wisconsin squad that turns ball over 22.5% of time..

Oklahoma State is 4-0, scoring 104.8 pts/game; they beat UConn 98-90 yesterday in foul fest where both teams took 42 FTs. Two Cowboys played more than 27:00 (31-32)- they’re forcing turnovers 23.6% of time, are shooting 41% on arc. North Carolina had glorified practice over a D-II team last night; Tar Heels are 5-0 with no close games, no top 100 wins; they’re grabbing 49% of own missed shots- can Cowboys hold their own on boards? ACC teams/Big X teams split their last 22 meetings; ACC teams are 7-7 vs spread when favored. Big X teams are 3-0 vs spread this season as an underdog.

      Barclay’s Center, Brooklyn

Texas is 3-1, with all three wins vs teams ranked #233 or worse; Longhorns start a freshman, two sophs- they lost by 19 to Northwestern last nite, going 13-27 on foul line- they were -9 on boards. Colorado got down big early last nite vs Notre Dame, rallied back but lost by 6; Buffs played 8 kids 10:00+, one more than 30:00- they start 4 seniors. Texas played one kid more than 27:00 last nite; they also played 8 guys 10:00+. These teams were Big X rivals up until 2010; Texas won last six series games. Big X teams are 12-6 vs spread this season.

Notre Dame plays Northwestern sometimes in football, but not in hoops; Irish used three kids 32+ minutes last nite, running out to big lead, holding on to win 89-83. ND starts two juniors, three seniors- they used two subs more than 9:00. Wildcats are playing to build tournament resume; they’ve never made NCAAs, but Texas win last nite is big. Northwestern is 3-1 with a 2-point loss at Butler; they’re shooting 42.2% on arc while starting 2 sophs, 2 juniors, playing one of 20 slowest tempos in country. This is a bigger game for Northwestern than Notre Dame.

      Cancun Challenge

Auburn beat three stiffs to open season, winning by 17-18-21 points; they’re #3 in country at getting to foul line, where they’ve shot only 63.4%. Young Tigers (start 3 freshmen, 2 sophs) are forcing turnovers 25.5% of time (#15 in US); they’re playing #17 pace, with subs playing #22 minutes in country. Texas Tech has new coach, is #10 experience team in country- they’re 3-0 vs similar stiffs, #28 at protecting ball so far. Red Raiders are making 47.9% on arc while playing #271 pace. SEC teams are 18-19 vs spread; Big X teams are 12-6 vs spread.

Purdue is 2-1, losing by 3 at home to Villanova, then scoring last 20 points of game to beat a decent Georgia State team by 8. Boilers start four juniors and a soph; they’re still shaky vs quickness/pressure. Utah State is 4-0 with only top 200 win at Cal-Irvine; they’ve made 39.1% of 3-pointers. Mountain West teams are 4-3 vs spread as an underdog; Big 14 teams are 8-13 vs spread as favorites. Big 14 teams won three of last four games vs MW teams, but are just 1-3 vs spread in those games.

Indiana was +23 (51-28) on boards in 90-65 home win over Fort Wayne LY; this game is in Fort Wayne, has to be a big deal to have Hoosiers coming there. Indiana beat Kansas in OT out in Hawai’i; they beat two other stiffs at home after that. Hoosiers are shooting 44.3% on arc, but also turning ball over 25% of time. Matadors lost by 9 at Arkansas, 18 at Illinois State; they’re not a strong defensive team, bad news vs Hoosiers. Fort Wayne has a senior PG who is very good but they also start two sophs. Summit League underdogs are 10-10 vs spread this month.

                      November 24, 2016

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) Malik Monk scored 23 points and De'Aaron Fox added 16 to propel No. 1 Kentucky to a 101-70 rout of Cleveland State on Wednesday.

With leading scorer Isaiah Briscoe sidelined by a back injury, the freshman duo picked up the slack and did it quickly, helping Kentucky (5-0) roll to a 16-2 lead that was never threatened. They combined for 31 first-half points, with 19 from Monk, whose 4-for-4 start from long range and 8-of-12 shooting overall helped him match his career scoring best.

Bam Adebayo added 14 points and seven rebounds while Mychal Mulder matched a career high with 13 points for Kentucky, which shot a season-best 52 percent from the field.

Rob Edwards' 28 points on 12-of-21 shooting led Cleveland State (1-3), which couldn't keep up with the Wildcats on either end and trailed 56-35 at halftime.

                      ---

No. 2 VILLANOVA 63, COLLEGE of CHARLESTON 47

VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) - Josh Hart had 13 points and 11 rebounds and Kris Jenkins scored 11 points for Villanova.

Mikal Bridges and Eric Paschall added eight points apiece for the Wildcats, who improved to 6-0 a season after winning the national championship.

Jarrell Brantley led Charleston with 18 points and seven rebounds. The Cougars shot 4 for 22 from 3-point range and committed 14 turnovers.

Jenkins, who famously hit the title-winning shot to beat North Carolina at the buzzer last April, was held out of the starting lineup by head coach Jay Wright because he missed a class. But the senior forward came in just 3 minutes into the game and played 28 minutes, shooting 4 for 7 from the field.

                      ---

                      No. 4 NORTH CAROLINA 71, No. 16 WISCONSIN 56

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) - Kennedy Meeks had 15 points and a career-high 16 rebounds and Joel Berry II scored 22 points as North Carolina won its fourth Maui Invitational title.

The long, athletic Tar Heels (7-0) ran roughshod through the deep Maui field, so good in the semifinals that Oklahoma State coach Brad Underwood called them the ''best team in the country.''

North Carolina looked the part again in the title game, dominating Wisconsin (4-2) at both ends of the court.

The Tar Heels held the Badgers to 38 percent shooting and harassed their leading scorer, Bronson Koenig, into a 1-for-13 night.

And there's this: After their three previous three Maui titles, the Tar Heels went on to win two national championships and reach the Final Four the other time.

                      ---

                      No. 6 DUKE 88, WILLIAM & MARY 67

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Freshman Frank Jackson scored 19 points to lead Duke.

Grayson Allen added 17 points to help the Blue Devils (5-1) win their third straight since their loss to No. 5 Kansas last week. Duke shot 50 percent and outrebounded the Tribe 39-25.

Amile Jefferson finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds, Luke Kennard had 11 points and Matt Jones scored 10 points. Duke has had five double-figure scorers in every game this season.

Jack Whitman and Daniel Dixon scored 13 points each for William & Mary (2-2), which hasn't beaten a ranked team since 1977 and has never beaten one on the road.

No. 10 LOUISVILLE 68, OLD DOMINION 62, OT

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) - Donovan Mitchell scored all 15 of his points after halftime for Louisville in the opening round of the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Mitchell put Louisville ahead for good with a long 3-pointer to start the extra period and came up with several key plays that helped the Cardinals (4-0) advance on a night they struggled to knock down much of anything. Louisville finished the game shooting 30 percent.

Quentin Snider scored 18 points to lead the Cardinals, while Mangok Mathiang nearly won it in regulation for Louisville with an inside basket with 14.4 seconds left.

Brandan Stith scored 22 points, including a putback with 6.3 seconds left to answer Mathiang and force overtime for the Monarchs (2-1). Old Dominion shot just 38 percent, but hurt its chances most by missing 17 of 32 free throws.

                      ---

                      No. 13 OREGON 79, UCONN 69

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) - Chris Boucher scored 21 points and Tyler Dorsey added 19 as Oregon took fifth place in the Maui Invitational.

Oregon (4-2) lost its opener to Georgetown, but bounced back with an overtime victory over Tennessee. The Ducks wanted to get off to a fast start in their Maui finale and did just that, racing to a 15-point lead in the opening 4 1/2 minutes.

UConn (2-4) chipped into the lead by halftime, but the Ducks started flying again, building the lead back up to 17.

Dylan Ennis had 15 points and Jordan Bell added 12 for Oregon, which shot 54 percent and made 9 of 21 from 3-point range.

Jalen Adams led the Huskies with 27 points and Rodney Purvis added 13.

                      ---

                      No. 17 PURDUE 96, AUBURN 71

CANCUN, Mexico (AP) - Carsen Edwards broke out of his shooting slump with 21 points and Purdue shot 17 of 26 from 3-point range to capture the Cancun Challenge title.

P.J. Thompson and Vincent Edwards each added 15 points for the Boilermakers (4-1), who had six players score in double figures in their third straight win since falling to national champion Villanova.

Edwards, a highly recruited freshman, had been 2 of 16 from 3-point range. But the 6-foot guard made 4 of 5 shots from behind the arc. He hit two 3s and two free throws in a 16-4 run midway through the second half that broke open a close game.

Purdue shot 64 percent from the field and it was the second-most 3-pointers made in a game behind the 18 it had last season against Vermont.

Danjel Purifoy scored 22 points and Mustapha Heron added 15 points and eight rebounds for the Tigers (4-1), who were seeking their first 5-0 start since 2004-05.

                      No. 20 BAYLOR 71, VCU 63

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) - Al Freeman scored 15 points and came up with three baskets during a critical second-half sequence to help Baylor in the opening round of the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Johnathan Motley scored 19 points for the Bears (4-0). In addition, Manu Lecomte shook off a rough shooting game to finish with 16 points, including a hanging layup while being knocked to the ground for a three-point play to go with several key free throws in the final minute.

JeQuan Lewis had 21 points for the Rams (3-1), who went without a field goal for roughly 6 1/2 minutes in the second half.

VCU used a late-half burst to lead 36-28 at the break and shot 58 percent in the opening half, but it cooled in the second half as the Bears' defense tightened.

                      No. 24 MICHIGAN ST. 73, ST. JOHN'S 62

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) - Freshman Miles Bridges had 22 points and a season-high 15 rebounds to help Michigan State pull away late in the first round of the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Eron Harris added 14 points for the Spartans (3-2), who used a 17-4 burst midway through the second half to take control and build a 67-53 lead with about 2 1/2 minutes left.

In addition, Tum Tum Nairn Jr., a native of nearby Nassau, matched his career high of 13 points in his return to the Bahamas. And freshman forward Nick Ward provided some needed help for a thin front line with nine points and a season-high 11 rebounds to help the Spartans dominate the glass.

Marcus LoVett scored 20 points to lead the Red Storm (2-2), who shot around 31 percent and couldn't answer Michigan State's clinching push.

                      ---

                      SOUTH CAROLINA 61, No. 25 MICHIGAN 46

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Sindarius Thornwell had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead South Carolina past cold-shooting Michigan.

The Gamecocks improved to 5-0 for a second straight season and knocked off their first ranked opponent since an 81-78 win at No. 8 Texas A&M last February. South Carolina got a big assist in this one from Michigan's awful outside touch - it finished 10 of 52 (19.6 percent) for its worst shooting percentage in six years.

It was the first time the Wolverines (4-1) hadn't reached 50 points since scoring 42 in a loss to Eastern Michigan on Dec. 9, 2014.

The Wolverines scored more points from the free throw line, 24, than the field. They hit just two of 26 attempts from behind the arc.

                      • Thursday’s six-pack

Six interesting college basketball scores from Wednesday:

                        — Oklahoma State 97, Georgetown 70— Hoyas are a soft team.

                        — Louisville 68, Old Dominion 62 OT— Surprisingly tense game in the Bahamas.

                        — Cavaliers 137, Blazers 125- Kevin Love scored 34…..in the FIRST QUARTER!!!

                        — Oregon 79, UConn 69— Huskies are 1-4 vs D-I teams and now have injury issues; could be a long winter in Nutmeg State.

                        — Baylor 71, VCU 63— Bears play Michigan State today in semis at the Battle of Atlantis.

                        — North Carolina 71, Wisconsin 56— Tar Heels win Maui Classic; other three times they did that, they made the Final Four. Right now, they’re pretty clearly the best team in the country.

                        Thursday’s List of 13: NFL’s top 10, bottom three teams…….

                        32) Browns— Next weekend will be a little more fun for Cleveland fans; its the Browns’ bye week.

                        31) 49ers— Lost last nine games; play red-hot Dolphins in Miami this week. Chances are that’ll be ten losses in a row.

                        30) Jaguars— Lost last five games, last three by 7 or less points.

                        10) Dolphins— They’ve got lot of good receivers; was mystified why they had less than 100 yards of offense thru 53:00 in LA last week. Not a big Tannehill fan, but he’s on a roll right now.

                        9) Falcons— Someone is going to give Atlanta OC Kyle Shanahan a head coaching job next season; will his dad come along to help out?

                        8) Giants— Seven wins by a total of 27 points; expect to see them pummel Cleveland this week or I’ll list them as a suspect for a quick exit in January.

                        7) Broncos— 7-0 when they score 20+ points, 0-3 when they do not. Still think QB Siemian is a suspect, but as long as he doesn’t screw things up, he’s OK for now. Their defense is that good.

                        6) Redskins— Jay Gruden is an underrated coach; he’s helped make a dysfunctional franchise successful. Washington took lot of grief for drafting Cousins the same year they traded the farm to draft RGIII; seems like a good idea now.

                        5) Chiefs— 18-4 in last 22 games, but offense has struggled last three weeks. Big game in Denver Sunday; NBC chose that game instead of Patriots-Jets.

                        4) Seahawks— Drafting is such an inexact science; Russell Wilson, Joe Montana were 3rd round picks, Tom Brady a 6th round pick. Look at Dak Prescott; he was a 4th round pick after a DUI a month before the draft. Then look at some of the stiffs drafted first. Go figure.

                        3) Raiders— Jack Del Rio was once the catcher on USC’s baseball team, when one of the pitchers was a guy named Mark McGwire.

                        2) Patriots— Will Brady/Belichick retire at same time? Imagine the poor bastards who would have to step into those big shoes? When does Jimmy Garoppolo hit the free agent market?

                        1) Cowboys— Very seldom does a team win/cover nine games in a row, and never, ever with a rookie QB. Interesting game today with the Redskins.

                                Thursday, November 24

Michigan State is very young team, struggling right now; they start only one senior, are #324 in experience, turning ball over 22.4% of time. Spartans won last three games, wore down St John’s by 11 yesterday, but didn’t look great doing it. Baylor won tough game with VCU; they were down 8 at half, but outscored Rams 27-14 on foul line. Bears start 4 juniors and a senior; they used four guys 29:00+ yesterday. MSU played four guys 27:00+. Big 14 teams are 13-8 vs spread away from home; Big X teams are 6-6.

VCU is #31 experience team but is turning ball over 22.9% of time; they blew 8-point halftime loss yesterday in tough loss to Baylor- three Rams played 35:00+. VCU starts three seniors. St John’s lost its last two games by 6-11 points; they’re 4th-youngest team playing pace #26- they protect ball well and have made 42.3% of 3’s, but they’re shooting same %age inside arc. Red Storm are starting two freshmen, two sophs. Big East teams are 11-9 vs spread away from home; A-14 teams are 12-11.

LSU was awful yesterday; they lost by 35 to Wichita, were down 46-19 at half— one good thing about that is only one of their guys played more than 24:00. Tigers had scored 82 pts/game in its 3-0 start, all against teams outside top 200. LSU starts a freshman and three sophs, so they are learning as they go. Old Dominion lost late game in OT last night, tough game vs Louisville. Monarchs start two seniors, one junior; they used three kids 40:00+ last night, a 4th kid played 34:00. ODU plays disciplined tempo, they were 15-32 on foul line last nite, which was fatal.

Louisville survived OT game with Old Dominion last nite, the late game- tip off for this game is less than 15 hours after that game ended, while Wichita played early game. Cardinals start two sophs, two juniors- they used three kids 39:00+, no one else more than 28. Wichita was up 27 at the half, won by 35 yesterday; Shockers are 5-0 wth 27 points closest game they’ve played so far- they start a freshman and four juniors. ACC teams are 11-10 vs spread away from home. MVC teams are 7-9. Wichita lost to ACC’s Miami by 8 in NCAA tournament last March.

                                NIT, Brooklyn
Temple is 2-2 with no top 100 games, losing to UNH/UMass; Owls are woefully thin (#340 in bench minutes) because of off-season injuries to backcourt- they’re playing pace #259. Temple is shooting only 31.6% on arc, but they’re protecting ball well. Florida State is their first top 100 opponent; Seminoles are 4-0 with wins over Iona/Winthrop- they start a freshman and couple sophs, play #27 pace with subs playing #32 minutes in country. AAC teams are 8-10 vs spread away from home. ACC teams are 11-10.

West Virginia crushed three stiffs to start season, forcing turnovers 34.2% of time, #1 in nation, but Illinois is Big 14 team that starts four seniors and shouldn’t be intimdated. Illini are 4-1, losing last game at home to #98 Winthrop, their first top 100 game- they made 11-24 on arc and still lost. Illinois does turn ball over 20.2% of time, is making 39.8% of 3’s. West Virginia hasn’t played anyone near as good as Illinois- they made 15-32 on arc last game- this is their first game away from home for both teams.

                                Advocate Invitational. Orlando
Iowa State won its first three games vs an impressive collection of stiffs; Cyclones start five seniors, so the future is now- Indiana State isn’t great, but they’re lot better than anyone they played so far. Sycamores are 2-1, splitting pair of OT games in their two road outings, beating Northern Illinois, losing to Ball State. Indiana State is 30-33 last two years; they start two juniors, two seniors. Iowa State lost to MVC’s Northern Iowa on neutral floor LY; they generally travel well, should edge in crowd support down in central Florida. MVC teams are 7-9 vs spread away from home.

Miami Hurricanes forced turnovers 23.9% of time in winning first three games, by 49-38-12 points, vs stiffs; Miami starts two seniors, two juniors; only three subs they used in last game were all freshmen- this is their first top 100 game. Stanford is 4-0 with all four wins vs similar group of opponents, ranked between 163-188. Miami is #18, so this is a step up for both sides. Cardinal starts three juniors, two seniors playing for new coach; they’re #51 in bench minutes. Stanford played game in Japan, now they’re in Florida; lot of frequent flier miles.

Florida’s gym is being re-done; they won’t play a home game for 3-4 more weeks. Gators are 4-0 vs decent schedule (teams ranked #80-158); they’ve forced turnovers 26.% of time (#7 in country), are starting two juniors, two seniors, but Seton Hall will be step up in competition. Pirates are 3-0, haven’t played in a week since 91-83 win at rebuilding Iowa. Seton Hall starts four seniors and a senior- their best soph from LY is in the NBA. Big East teams are 11-9 vs spread away from home; SEC teams are 11-9. This should be a good game.

                                Wooden Legacy, Fullerton, CA
Northridge is local team, which may be their only advantage here. CSUN lost to UCLA/Stanford by 15-27 points in first two road games, beat Northern Illinois by hoop at home last game- they start three juniors and a senior, most experienced, deepest team Theus has had with Matadors. Northridge is playing #4 pace in country; they turn ball over 21.3% of time, kind of expected playing a fast pace. Texas A&M beat couple of stiffs before losing at home to USC by a hoop; Aggies are shooting 27.9% on arc, 58.8% on foul line so far- not good.

New Mexico is 3-0 with 72-59 win over rival New Mexico State last game; Lobos lost their PG last year (coach’s son) because kid was getting ton of grief, but fast start should make natives less restless- their new PG is a soph. Lobos took 37 FTs, were just 1-10 on arc last game, so interior-oriented. Virginia Tech was 20-12 LY, its first winning season in five years; Hokies are 3-0 vs teams all ranked #266 or worse- the three seniors in their rotation all come off bench. In a smallish gym, expect New Mexico fans to make it sound like a Lobo home game.

Dayton has injury issues, with Cunningham out; they won by 5 at Alabama, lost to St Mary’s at home by 4- they’ve played tougher-than-usual early schedule. Flyers start three seniors, two sophs; they’ll probably only play seven guys, but have a really good senior PG. Nebraska is 3-0 vs softer schedule, with #152 Louisiana Tech best team they’ve played; young Cornhuskers are starting four sophs and a senior. A-14 teams are 12-11 vs spread away from home; Big 14 teams are 13-8.

UCLA has a great freshman PG, is scoring 105.8 pts/game in 4-0 start vs competition similar to Portland, with wins by 39-15-20-37 points- two of those wins were vs Pilots’ WCC rivals. Bruins are local team, will have lot of people here- they’re playing #15 tempo, making 45.5% on arc, but they don’t have much depth. Portland has a new coach, is 3-0 but they haven’t played any good teams yet. Portland is #44 experience team playing tempo #86; they’ve made 41% on arc, but if they try to run with UCLA, this could be over early.
