CHICAGO (AP) Jimmy Butler scored 33 points and hit two free throws with 2.1 seconds left to lift the Chicago Bulls to a 106-104 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday.

Butler scored the Bulls' final nine points. His free throws gave the Bulls a two-point lead and capped a 15-4 run.

Tim Hardaway Jr. then missed a 3-pointer for Atlanta as time expired, giving the Bulls their third straight win. That put them in a tie with Miami and Indiana for the final two playoff spots in the Eastern Conference. The sixth-place Hawks, who had won two straight after dropping seven in a row, trail Milwaukee by a game.

Rajon Rondo had a season-high 25 points and added 11 rebounds. Denzel Valentine scored 13 points as the Bulls stopped a seven-game losing streak to Atlanta.

Dennis Schroder led the Hawks with 29 points while Hardaway scored 20.

          CLIPPERS 115, LAKERS 104

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Blake Griffin scored 36 points, Chris Paul added 29 and the Clippers beat the Lakers, giving coach Doc Rivers his 800th career victory.

J.J. Redick added 19 points for the Clippers, who moved within a game of the idle Jazz for the No. 4 playoff seed in the West. The Clippers have won three in a row and seven of nine.

The series between the Staples Center co-tenants has been dominated by the Clippers of late. They've won 18 of 20 since the start of the 2012-13 season.

Rookie David Nwaba scored 19 points and Brandon Ingram had 10 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter for the Lakers. They have lost 18 of 20 since the All-Star break. D'Angelo Russell, the team's leading scorer at 15.7 points, had two points on 1-of-9 shooting while missing six 3-point attempts.

          TRAIL BLAZERS 130, SUNS 117

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Damian Lillard scored 31 points and Portland continued its late-season push for the playoffs with a sixth straight victory, beating Phoenix.

CJ McCollum added 29 points for Portland, which holds the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Blazers (38-38) led by as many as 25 points and got back to .500 for the first time since they were 12-12 on Dec. 9.

Devin Booker had 31 for the Suns, who lost their 11th straight for the fifth-longest losing streak in franchise history. The Suns were just ahead of the Lakers at the bottom of the Western Conference.

The Blazers were playing their first game without Jusuf Nurkic since announcing that he had a fractured right leg and will miss the rest of the regular season.

          NETS 121, MAGIC 111

NEW YORK (AP) - Brook Lopez scored 30 points, Trevor Booker had a season-high 23 and Brooklyn beat Orlando.

Sean Kilpatrick added 15 points for the Nets, who snapped a two-game losing streak. Brooklyn had a season-high 72 points in the paint.

Elfrid Payton had 20 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds for his fifth triple-double of the season for Orlando, which has lost four straight games. Nikola Vucevic had 27 points and 11 rebounds, while Aaron Gordon finished with 22 points and 15 boards.

Brooklyn opened the fourth quarter on an 11-0 run to take a 100-89 lead and never looked back.

          KINGS 123, TIMBERWOLVES 117

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Buddy Hield tied a career high with 22 points, going 4 of 6 from 3-point range, and Sacramento got 66 points from its bench in a victory over Minnesota.

          • Sunday’s six-pack

            — If I’m an NFL team interested in drafting Deshaun Watson, I’d want to know why the Clemson QB was in a bar in Alabama. His choice, but I’d just like to know why.

            — Bill Self, Tracy McGrady and George McGinnis were among 11 basketball greats elected to the Naismith Hall of Fame Saturday.

            — Bruins 5, Florida 2— Boston has a 4-point lead for the last Wild Card spot in the East.

            — Clippers 115, Lakers 104— Clippers ran out to a 17-0 lead, then trailed 32-31.

            — Portland 130, Phoenix 117— Trailblazers even their record at 38-38.

            — At some point, Phil Mickelson paid off a $2M gambling debt. I’d seriously be curious to see how that debt was accumulated; what games over what period of time? I’m a curious guy.

            ********************

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up Final Four Saturday

            13) Gonzaga 77, South Carolina 73— Were you not entertained? Not often a team goes on a 16-0 run and loses; Gamecocks fought their hearts out, but their bench was outscored 22-14 and Bulldogs advance to play for their first national title Monday night.

            12) North Carolina 77, Oregon 76— Ducks shot under 30% from arc in four of their six losses this year; this 7-26 performance was their worst since November losses to Baylor/Georgetown. Oregon held UNC to 36.2% inside the arc, but couldn’t rebound two missed foul shots when it mattered most, and now their great season is over.

            11) Charles Barkley predicted Gonzaga to win Monday night before the second game last night was over. I’m predicting the game will get excellent TV ratings.

            10) Other than Kentucky/Duke, is recruiting one/done players a good idea? Here are some recent one/done’s and how their coaches made out:

            — Dennis Smith, NC State— Mark Gottfried got fired this year.
            — Ben Simmons, LSU— Johnny Jones got fired this year, a year after Simmons left.
            — Markelle Fultz, Washington— Lorenzo Romar got fired this year.
            — Stephen Zimmerman, UNLV- Dave Rice was fired during the season last year.

            9) Former VCU/Alabama coach Anthony Grant is the new coach at Dayton; he had been with the Oklahoma City Thunder as an assistant under Billy Donovan.

            8) Quote of the Day, Part II: “Players, if anything, need a mental break sometimes. And sorry, they’re human. They go through so much every single day. There are so many obligations off the court that you don’t know about. … It might not be a physical break, it might just be a reset mentally, and I get that.”
            Kevin Durant

This made me want to puke, seriously. The regular season is six months long, playoffs run another 6-7 weeks, for the really good teams. You mean to tell me you need a break from playing three games a week for six months a year, but not for physical reasons, but MENTAL ones?

            Good God almighty.

            7) The key word in all of that is “obligations”. I’d be curious to know what Durant considers his “obligations” to be, and what makes them so demanding that he needs to take games off.

            6) Final Four drew 77,612 fans in the Cardinals’ domed stadium last night. They drew 39,380 in San Francisco for an A’s-Giants exhibition game Thursday night. Sports are popular.

            5) If NCAA wanted to, they could have the entire March Madness in Las Vegas, with regional games in UNLV’s arena, Mandalay Bay, MGM Grand and T-Mobile Arena. The Final Four could be in the Raiders’ new domed stadium, when it gets built.

            4) New Mexico fired basketball coach Craig Neal, which was kind of expected after his point guard son Cullen bolted the Lobos for Ole Miss after last season.

            3) Grant Hill is throwing out the first ball at the Diamondbacks’ season opener today. There are three games on the baseball schedule. AmericA’S team (the A’s) open on Monday night.

            2) One thing about sitting in a Las Vegas casino and I’ll have a lot more on this tomorrow; this is a very diverse set of bettors here in Las Vegas. You meet all kinds of people, you bond over sports and food and you realize that we’re a lot more alike that some people want to admit.

1— Early line for Monday night’s game: UNC -2, total of 154 (getting bet up as we speak).

Game of the Night – Wizards at Warriors – 8:05 PM EST

Washington (46-30 SU, 39-36-1 ATS) closes out its final extended road trip of the season as the Wizards try to snap a two-game skid at Oracle Arena against Golden State. The Wizards won the first two contests against the Cavaliers and Lakers to wrap up their first division title since 1979. However, Scott Brooks’ team has suffered defeats in the last two games to the Clippers and Jazz as the Wizards try to avoid their first three-game losing streak since mid-November.

The Warriors (62-14 SU, 36-38-2 ATS) are in the midst of their second winning streak of at least 10 games this season after knocking off the Rockets on Friday, 107-98. Golden State’s defense stepped up in the final quarter by limiting Houston to 13 points over the final 12 minutes as the Rockets shot just 37% from the floor. After cashing 11 consecutive UNDERS, the Warriors barely hit the OVER in their massive rally against San Antonio on Wednesday, but got back on the UNDER track Friday as the 232 total was never threatened.

The last time these teams hooked up in D.C. on February 28, Kevin Durant suffered a knee injury in the opening minute of play as the future looked bleak for Golden State. Durant is still sidelined as the Warriors lost that night to the Wizards, 112-108, in spite of erasing a 19-point deficit and taking the lead in the fourth quarter. By the way, Golden State has won 13 of 17 games with Durant not in the lineup, while beating Washington in seven of the nine matchups at Oracle Arena.

                        Putrid Pacers

Indiana is going backwards at the wrong time as the Pacers have lost five of their last six games. The task doesn’t get easier as Indiana travels to Cleveland to face the Cavaliers. The Pacers have allowed at least 110 points during each contest of a current three-game losing streak, while coming off a 111-100 defeat at Toronto on Friday. Nate McMillan’s team is in a three-way tie with Chicago and Miami at 37-39 for the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference, but the Pacers split with the Bulls and lost the regular season series with the Heat.

The Cavaliers bounced back from a three-game slide by blowing out the 76ers on Friday, 122-105 as 12 ½-point favorites. Cleveland enters Sunday’s action one-half game behind Boston for the top seed in the Eastern Conference, while seeking back-to-back wins for only the second time since late February. Indiana captured the first matchup with Cleveland in November as LeBron James sat out, but the Cavaliers have won each of the past two meetings with the Pacers.

                        Grounded Rockets

Houston closes out a three-game road swing tonight in Phoenix looking to snap a three-game skid. During this losing streak, the Rockets have lost twice to the Warriors and also fallen to the Blazers, but Mike D’Antoni’s squad is still firmly in the third playoff position in the Western Conference with six games remaining. The Rockets have owned the Suns this season by winning all three matchups by 14 points or more, while all three contests sailed OVER the total.

The Suns are taking the court for the third time in four nights, coming off a 130-117 defeat at Portland on Saturday to suffer their 11th consecutive setback. Phoenix has dropped six consecutive games at Talking Stick Resort Arena, but the Suns have posted a solid 6-1 ATS record in its last seven opportunities as a home underdog.

                        Bulling Back

Chicago rallied late to stun Atlanta, 106-104 on Saturday to capture its third consecutive victory to remain in the mix for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Bulls travel to the Big Easy to face New Orleans as Chicago has been terrific in the underdog role recently by cashing six straight when receiving points. Since getting blown out at Boston on March 12, the Bulls have covered four consecutive contests away from the United Center.

The Pelicans have cleaned up at home of late by winning six straight games at Smoothie King Center, while coming off a 117-89 blowout of the Kings on Friday as 11-point favorites. In five of the six wins during this home hot streak, New Orleans has won by double-digits, while compiling a 5-1 ATS mark. The Pelicans have dropped five meetings in a row to the Bulls, including a 107-99 setback at Chicago in mid-January.

                        No Sunday Funday

The Heat have turned into the best story in the NBA this season following an 11-30 start by winning 26 of their last 35 games. Miami is firmly in the playoff hunt in the East in spite of suffering a tough loss to a short-handed New York squad on Friday, 98-94 as 10 ½-point home favorites. The Heat host the Nuggets this evening as Miami has been awful on Sundays this season by failing to win in seven tries on the first day of the week.

Denver continues a five-game road swing after squandering a 12-point third quarter lead in Friday’s 122-114 defeat at Charlotte. Things are slipping away fast for the Nuggets, who are in a 2 ½-game hole to Portland for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference with seven games remaining. Denver has failed to beat Miami in the last four matchups, including a 106-98 home loss in late November.

                        Head-to-Head Trends

-- Philadelphia snapped a 14-game losing streak to Toronto in mid-January as the 76ers battle the Raptors for the final time this season. The Sixers have lost in their last seven visits to the Air Canada Center, while Toronto has covered in its last three home victories as a double-digit favorite against Philadelphia.

-- Atlanta plays with immediate revenge against Brooklyn after the Nets tripped up the Hawks, 92-86 last Sunday. The Hawks own a solid 10-5 SU/ATS record with no rest following Saturday’s loss to the Bulls, while winning two of three meetings with Brooklyn this season. Brooklyn looks to capitalize off Saturday’s victory over Orlando as the Nets seek their first win on no rest in 14 tries this season.

                          • 76ers play at Toronto with short bench
                            April 2, 2017

TORONTO -- Not only will the Philadelphia 76ers be without Robert Covington and Jahlil Okafor when they face the Toronto Raptors on Sunday at the Air Canada Centre, but they will not have them for the rest of the season.

The 76ers, also have six games left in the season, made the announcement before they lost to the Cavaliers in Cleveland, 122-105, on Friday night.

"I think at this stage of the year, it seems like it's the right thing to do," 76ers coach Brett Brown said after the game Friday. "I know they're very disappointed about not being here with the team and (not) being able to see this through, but I think it's borderline zero doubt that this is the right thing to do."

The 76ers (28-48) will complete a stretch of 11 of 14 games on the road when they play the Raptors.

With the latest injuries, the Sixers had only nine players available on Friday. Sergio Rodriguez missed his third straight game because of a strained left hamstring and is scheduled to be re-evaluated Monday.

"It's just unfortunate in like the last 10, 15, 20 games of the year that we really have been undermanned and hadn't had the full roster," 76ers guard Nik Stauskas said.

Covington sustained what was termed a slight tear of the lateral meniscus in his right knee on Tuesday against the Brooklyn Nets. The forward will week a second opinion to see if surgery is required.

As for Okafor, he has missed the four consecutive games and 11 overall this season with a sore right knee. The center has experienced soreness since undergoing surgery for a slight meniscus tear in his knee March 22, 2016.

They joined Joel Embiid (torn meniscus in his left knee), Ben Simmons (fractured right foot) and Jerryd Bayless (torn ligaments in his left wrist) as 76ers with season-ending injuries.

The 76ers intend to sign power forward Alex Poythress, according to The Vertical.

Poythress is 6-8, 235-pounds and was undrafted out of Kentucky last year. He has averaged 18.5 points, 7.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.4 blocked shots this season with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA Development League. He was a D-League All-Star.

The Raptors, without point guard Kyle Lowry who is out for the rest of the regular season after wrist surgery, defeated the Indiana Pacers, 111-100, on Friday and have won seven of their last eight games.

The Raptors (46-30) are tied for third in the Eastern Conference with the Washington Wizards, but hold the tiebreaker.

DeMar DeRozan scored 40 points for the Raptors, the seventh time this season that he has scored 40 or more. It also was the 30th time this season that he has scored at least 30 points in a game, matching Vince Carter's club record set in 2000-01.

"Every record is an honor," DeRozan said. "It's big and I don't believe it. I go home and I still don't believe it, so it's great. Maybe after I finish playing I'll look back at it and be amazed."

The Raptors are 14-6 without Lowry and the way DeRozan has played is a big reason for that.

"Put a little bit more thought in the overall game, understanding not just getting myself going but getting everybody else going," DeRozan said when asked about the difference it makes playing without Lowry.

"With Kyle out there, we lean on him for a lot, he's does things for us a lot of times and it makes the game come easier for a lot of us. Without him, I try to do the same as if I was Kyle, and try to think for everybody else, try to get easy things going on both ends."

The Raptors have won two of the three meetings with the 76ers this season. The 76ers won, 94-89, at Philadelphia on Jan. 18 and the Raptors won, 122-95, on Nov. 28 at Toronto and, 123-114, at Philadelphia on Dec. 14.

                            • Hawks can't afford a slip-up versus Nets
                              April 2, 2017

NEW YORK -- The Atlanta Hawks find themselves in a position where three games separate five teams in the crowded Eastern Conference playoff race.

With six games remaining, the Hawks are 39-37. They are in sixth place, one game behind the surging Milwaukee Bucks and two up on the Chicago Bulls, Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers.

If there are more slip-ups, the situation might become less secure for the Hawks, who visit the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday night.

Atlanta is in this position because of its inconsistencies since opening night. The Hawks began this season 9-2, dropped 14 of 20 and went 22-13 to reach a 37-29 mark on March 11.

Since its 17-point road victory over the Memphis Grizzlies, Atlanta is 2-8 in its last 10 games. One of those defeats was last Sunday's 107-92 home loss to the Nets.

Another occurred Saturday, when the Hawks wasted two 10-point leads early in the fourth quarter and were handed a 106-104 road loss to the Chicago Bulls.

"They hit some tough shots," Atlanta center Dwight Howard said. "That's how they got the win. We should have won that game though. Any game we lose it's hard to take. Tonight, that was a game we definitely should have won. We went up big and we should have capitalized on it."

Atlanta shot 36 percent in the fourth quarter but still led inn the final minute on a pull-up jumper by Dennis Schroder with 35.8 seconds remaining. Then they gave up a layup to Jimmy Butler, Schroder stepped out of bounds, Butler hit two free throws and Tim Hardaway Jr. missed a game-winning 3-pointer just before the buzzer.

Those plays left the Hawks lamenting about poor execution down the stretch.

"We need to execute better in crunch time," Schroder said after scoring 29 points.

"We didn't make enough plays down the stretch that we had to," Atlanta coach Mike Budenholzer said.

The Hawks are faltering while All-Star forward Paul Millsap is recovering from a left knee injury. Millsap missed his eighth straight game and is making progress but is unlikely to play Sunday.

Millsap's progress consisted of a pregame workout Saturday and practice Friday. The Hawks could opt to sit him again since they have three days off before hosting the Boston Celtics on Thursday.

"We are being aggressively cautious," Budenholzer said. "We are definitely aware that if the doesn't play then he has three more days. We are not going to do anything to compromise the big picture."

Last Sunday's win in Atlanta is part of a respectable month for the Nets. From Dec. 28 to Feb. 25, Brooklyn lost 27 of 28 games.

Starting with a nine-point victory at Sacramento that snapped a 16-game skid, the Nets are 8-10 in their last 18 games.

"We definitely want to finish the season strong," Brooklyn reserve forward Trevor Booker said. "It'll give us something to build off of over the summer going into next season."

The Nets look to win both ends of a back-to-back set for the first time since March 31-April 1, 2015 after getting a 121-111 home win over the Orlando Magic on Saturday. Brooklyn is 0-13 on the second night of a back-to-back this season and 0-21 on the second night of a back-to-back since Dec. 21, 2015 at Chicago.

Brook Lopez scored 30 points on 12 of 22 shooting Saturday. He is averaging 21.2 points and shooting 48.4 percent in his last 17 games and unlike last season will not be shut down for the final weeks of the season.

The Nets topped 120 points for the 10th time and are 9-1 when doing so. Brooklyn also shot better than 50 percent for the 10th time and is 6-4 when hitting at least half its shots.

The effective performance featured 72 points in the paint and occurred after two disappointing showings down the stretch in close losses to the Philadelphia 76ers and Detroit Pistons.

"It was very important, very big," Lopez said. "We just continually talked about no slippage until the very end of the season but we want to continue to improve and take every opportunity we can to get better as a team."

The Hawks are 9-2 in the last 11 meetings since a 127-110 loss in London on Jan. 16, 2014. In their 110-105 home victory March 8, Schroder scored 31 and Millsap added 24 and in their 117-97 win in Brooklyn on Jan. 10, six players reached double figures.

                                April 2, 2017

The Philadelphia 76ers signed forward Alex Poythress from the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA Development League on Sunday.

The Sixers were able to add a player to the roster due to the NBA's injury hardship exception.

Poythress, 23, appeared in 46 games (45 starts) for Fort Wayne this season, averaging 18.5 points, 7.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.4 block in 31 minutes per contest. He shot 57 percent from the field and 40 percent from beyond the 3-point line.

Poythress, a 2017 NBA D-League All Star selection, ranked in the top 15 in the D-League in points, field goals made and attempted, offensive rebounds and blocks per game.

The 6-foot-7, 238-pound Poythress appeared in 112 career games at the University of Kentucky, finishing his four-year career. He went undrafted in 2016.
