        • Inside the Paint - Saturday
          March 4, 2017

ATS Rankings · Totals (O/U) Report · Betting Projections If you bet the NBA on a regular basis and lean to taking the points, then take a bow because your "Money Train" has arrived. Since Monday, underdogs have gone 21-16 straight up and 27-10 (73%) against the spread in the Association.

Eight more matchups on tap for Saturday and similar to last night, we’ve got plenty of home underdogs on the slate.

Game of the Night - L.A. Clippers at Chicago (ABC, 8:30 p.m. ET)

Even though Los Angeles (36-25 SU, 30-31 ATS) has faced serious injuries this season, it’s fair to say the team has been a major disappointment especially when you look at their talent. Hoping for a deep playoff run is a serious reach and head coach Doc Rivers hasn’t been able to push the right buttons since the All-Star break.

Los Angeles dropped a 112-101 decision on Friday at Milwaukee and has now lost four of five in the second-half of the season and the lone win came in overtime to a struggling Charlotte squad at home.

Despite the struggles, the Clippers opened as 1 ½-point road favorites over the Bulls on Saturday.

Even though they lost to the Bucks last night, L.A. has gone 14-9 SU and 9-14 ATS versus the Eastern Conference but eight of the nine losses came on the road.

While the Clippers have been struggling, Chicago (31-30 SU, 31-30 ATS) has rediscovered itself with a 5-1 record in its last six games. On Thursday, the Bulls notched an impressive 94-87 win over the Warriors as seven-point home underdogs and that improved their record to 19-12 SU and 16-15 ATS at home this season.

As an underdog at the United Center, Fred Hoiberg’s team has gone 7-2 both SU and ATS this season with wins coming against quality opponents like the aforementioned Warriors, along with the Cavaliers and Spurs.

The Clippers have gotten the better of the Bulls recently, winning two straight and seven of the last 10 between the pair. In the first meeting this season on Nov. 19, Los Angeles captured a 102-95 win at the Staples Center but failed to cover as an eight-point favorite.

Chicago nipped Los Angeles 83-80 last season at home but the Clippers had won and covered their five previous trips to the “Windy City” prior to that setback. The ‘under’ is on a 4-1 run in this series.

The total opened 212 and the early betting trends show an ‘under’ lean and that shouldn’t be surprising with Chicago’s strong lean to the low side (37-24) this season.

Something could have to give here knowing the Clippers have been a very strong ‘over’ bet (21-11) away from home this season. Also, the defense for Los Angeles has been a mess lately with the club allowing 116.6 points per game during its recent five-game span.

          East vs. West

Along with the above matchup, we have two other non-conference games on tap for Saturday, both taking place on the West Coast.

Charlotte (26-35 SU, 25-33-3 ATS) at Denver (28-33 SU, 32-28-1 ATS)

As bad as the Hornets (+5) have been in 2017, they’re still receiving respect from the oddsmakers and tonight’s line versus Denver will likely have bettors backing the host. Charlotte started the second-half of the season on the road and its gone 2-3 with victories coming against the Kings and Lakers. They were just run 120-103 at Phoenix on Thursday but the other setbacks both came in overtime.

Denver is currently in the eighth spot in the West and it enters this game with confidence after ripping the Bulls (125-107) and Bucks (110-98) by double digits on the road earlier this week.

Charlotte has had trouble on the road (10-22 SU, 13-16-3 ATS) this season and Denver has always been a tough out at the Pepsi Center but this year's mark isn’t exactly great at 16-14 SU and 15-14-1 ATS. Denver swept the regular season series last year versus Charlotte and both games went ‘under’ the number.

While the Nuggets appear to be a better lean tonight on paper, be aware that the club is just 5-5 at home versus Eastern Conference foes. Total bettors should note that the ‘over’ has gone 8-1-1 in those games and tonight's number is listed as high as 222.

Hornets forward Frank Kaminsky (shoulder) will miss this game and that hurts an already depleted frontcourt.

Brooklyn (10-50 SU, 26-32-2 ATS) at Portland (25-25 SU, 24-36 ATS)

The late-night tip from the Moda Center is setting up to be the “chase” or “press” game and I’m assuming most bettors will play the Trail Blazers (-11 ½) and the ‘over’ (226 ½). This is the first time this season that Portland is laying double digits while Brooklyn is very familiar with that role (2-20 SU, 12-10 ATS).

Portland notched a solid 114-109 win on Thursday over Oklahoma City as a one-point home ‘dog but it still remains the worst team in the league for bettors. They haven’t covered two straight games since January and as poor as the Nets look in the standings, the club has been competitive under rookie coach Kenny Atkinson.

This series has been all Portland recently, with the Blazers going 6-1 SU and 5-2 ATS in the last seven encounters versus the Nets. In the first matchup this season, Portland diced up Brooklyn 129-109 as a 4 ½-point road favorite.

          FatigueFactor

Saturday’s card will feature nine teams playing on no rest.

Listed below are SU and ATS records for each clubs plus any notable trends to watch.

76ers: 4-10 SU, 8-6 ATS (Started 0-4 ATS but have gone 8-2 since versus the number)

Cavaliers: 4-7 SU, 3-8 ATS (Cavs winless on the road, ‘under’ on a 4-1 run last five)

Heat: 4-7 SU, 9-2 ATS (2-2 SU, 3-1 ATS at home, two losses by combined six points)

Raptors: 6-7 SU, 7-5-1 ATS (Three straight wins despite scoring 90 and 92 in two of them)

Bucks: 4-9 SU, 5-8 ATS (Rough start but 2-1 SU and 3-0 ATS last three. Over on 7-1 run)

Grizzlies: 10-3 SU, 9-4 ATS (Started 8-0 but 2-3 in last five)

Spurs: 9-1 SU, 7-3 ATS (Only one of the 10 occurred at home and they lost)

Clippers: 5-7 SU, 5-7 ATS (Started 5-0 SU, 4-1 ATS but have dropped seven straight since then)

Nets: 0-10 SU, 5-4-1 ATS (Allowed 125, 129 and 112 to opponents from West)

            • Adam Silver says NBA All-Star format will change for 2018
              March 4, 2017

Change is coming to the defense-optional All-Star Game, and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver wants to hear ideas.

Silver and players' union President Chris Paul of the Los Angeles Clippers have spoken about how to make the game more competitive. No decisions have been made, but the Western Conference's 192-182 win over the Eastern Conference last month in New Orleans underlined such a need.

Some All-Stars said that night they would like to see a more authentic game, and the league apparently agrees.

''We will change it by next year,'' Silver said. ''It shouldn't be playoff intensity, but the guys should be playing.''

Next year's game is in Los Angeles.

Silver spoke Friday at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, hosted by MIT. He even shared an email address - Adam(at)NBA.com - in case anyone wants to share suggestions with him.

''You hear people talking about 4-point shots, something that's not about to happen in the NBA, but maybe in an All-Star Game,'' Silver said. ''Maybe there's a few spots on the floor where it's a 4-point shot. Maybe there's a halfcourt shot in the last minute that's 10 points. I don't know. Those are crazy ideas.''

New Orleans' Anthony Davis scored an All-Star record 52 points in this year's game, 10 points more than the mark by Wilt Chamberlain that stood for 55 years. The West has flirted with 200 points in each of the last two seasons - 196 in 2016, 192 this year. Giannis Antetokounmpo had 12 dunks by himself, and LeBron James was taking (and once, made) shots from the midcourt area.

''We collectively want to try to make All-Star weekend better for the fans,'' Paul told reporters in Milwaukee on Friday. ''All the way around. Even in CBA talks and stuff like that, that was one of the things that the players, the owners and everybody was talking about. Trying to fix that, spice it up a little bit to keep it interesting.''

Bucks coach Jason Kidd, a perennial All-Star as a player, is confident the league will find the right fix.

''Adam's a very smart man,'' Kidd said, ''and they'll figure it out.''

For this year's game, the voting process was changed - fan votes were no longer the sole basis for selecting starters, but instead part of a formula that also took player and media balloting into account. The player-voting element in particular was criticized by some NBA coaches like Golden State's Steve Kerr, who said it wasn't taken as seriously as it should have been.

''In an All-Star game like this, guys aren't trying to get hurt,'' Cleveland's Kyrie Irving said after the All-Star Game. ''We all enjoy the company of each other's presence. But at the same token, us as competitors, when it starts getting close, you can feel it. For me, I would love to play in a competitive game.''

                  • Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

                    — Duke and North Carolina have met only once in last 12 ACC tournaments. Duke won 75-58 in 2011 tournament final.

                    — Heat 120, Cavaliers 92— Cleveland is 0-8 vs spread on road if they played night before.

                    — South Dakota 78, Western Illinois 69 OT— Top seed in Summit League dodges a bullet.

                    — Justin Thomas leads the PGA event in Mexico; he had a hole-in-one on 13th hole.

                    — Penn 75, Harvard 72— Quakers qualify for Ivy tourney, which is next week on their home court, the Palestra.

                    — IUPUI 76, North Dakota State 57- -#7 seed upsets #2 seed in Summit League

                    **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a basketball Saturday…..

                    13) North Carolina 90, Duke 83— ESPN should add a UNC alum (Brad Daugherty?) to its booth for this game, to even things up a little. I mean, Mike Krzyzewski’s son-in-law calls games for ESPNU. This is a huge rivalry- a little balance would be good.

                    12) Kansas 90, Oklahoma State 85— High-level game. Jayhawks had lost previous three visits to Stillwater. Bill Self is an Oklahoma State alum.

                    11) Missouri Valley tournament gets the Illinois State-Wichita State final they wanted; would think both teams get into the NCAA’s. These two teams are so much better than the other eight teams in the league. Final should be an excellent game.

                    10) Kentucky 71, Texas A&M 63— Wildcats fell behind 25-6, 19-4 in last two games, not a great habit now that it is March.

                    9) Charleston 67, James Madison 62— CAA officials breathe a sigh of relief as host team averts an upset, which would’ve killed attendance for the semis and maybe the finals. This tournament has always been held in Richmond or Baltimore, more central locations for the schools.

Odd thing: with 0:08 left in this game and Cougars up a point, one of the refs got a bloody nose, which delayed the game for a few minutes.

                    8) Wake Forest 89, Virginia Tech 84— Danny Manning’s Deacons making a case to get in the Field of 68- this is a quality win.

                    7) Villanova 81, Georgetown 55— From what you read, not lot of fun to be around the Hoyas’ program these days.

                    6) Cal-Irvine 79, Cal-Davis 49— Anteaters avenge earlier loss when Cal-Davis was 35-46 on foul line. Anteaters led this by 18 at the half- they win regular season title and #1 seed at Big West tourney in Anaheim next week.

                    5) Tennessee 59, Alabama 54— Vols were down 36-22 at half, won for only second time in their last seven games. Alabama can start selling tickets for the NIT.

                    4) St Francis PA 71, Wagner 70— Kid on St Francis hit a really tough 3-pointer that spun around rim couple times before it dropped in at the buzzer. Shooter had man right in his face. Red Flash got the ball at the other end of the court with 0:07.3 left- big road win for them in NEC tourney.

                    3) Nevada 85, Colorado State 72— Wolf Pack win Mountain West regular season title and #1 seed in Las Vegas next week. Only one team from this league is getting into NCAA’s, so the next time these teams meet could be a lot more important.

                    2) Upsets of the Day: Youngstown State (+12.5) 81, Oakland 80— Cameron Morse scored 34 as the Penguins advance to the Horizon semi-finals. Youngstown’s winning hoop was as bad a defensive play as you’ll ever see- Oakland left a guy all by himself under the basket.

Florida International (+11) 68, UAB 56— Blazers are fading late in year.
                    Cal-Santa Barbara (+10) 57, Cal Poly 44
Seton Hall (+8.5) 70, Butler 64— Quality road win for the Pirates.
Milwaukee (+8.5) 43, Valparaiso 41— Valpo’s best player didn’t play; Crusaders are out.

1— Jacksonville State 66, Tenn-Martin 55— JSU coach Harper has won four national titles at lower levels; he also won two C-USA tourneys at Western Kentucky. The guy can coach, and now he has his Gamecocks in March Madness for the first time.

Sunday’s NBA Game of the Day: Warriors at Knicks
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York is playing a rare home game in a stretch that sees the struggling club play 10 of 13 away from home, including Friday's 105-102 loss at Philadelphia.

Golden State Warriors at New York Knicks (+10, 219.5)

The Golden State Warriors have dropped consecutive regular-season contests for the first time in nearly two years and will try to avoid their first three-game losing streak since November of 2013 when they visit the New York Knicks on Sunday. After opening a five-game road trip with a win at Philadelphia, the Warriors lost a thriller at Washington before falling 94-87 at Chicago on Thursday in their first game since losing All-Star Kevin Durant to a knee injury.

Golden State shot a season-low 38.6 percent in their worst offensive output since March 19, 2016 last time out. "A couple of shots we normally make did not fall," guard Stephen Curry told reporters. "That's not the reason we lost. We just need to understand that early in games, when we have new rotations, we cannot take our foot off the gas pedal. Every possession is important for us to pick up a rhythm without (Durant)." The Warriors have had no issues keeping their foot on the pedal when facing the Knicks, as they've won five straight meetings - all by at least 13 points. New York is playing a rare home game in a stretch that sees the struggling club play 10 of 13 away from home, including Friday's 105-102 loss at Philadelphia.

                              TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC

LINE HISTORY: The Warriors opened as 9.5-point road favorites over the Knicks but that line was boosted higher to 10 by early Sunday morning. The total hit the betting board at 221 and has steadily dropped to its current number of 219.5.

                              INJURY REPORT:

Warriors - SF K. Durant (Mid April, knee).

Knicks - C W. Hernangomez (Probable, ankle), SF M. Ndour (Mid March, ankle), C J. Noah (Out For Season, knee).

                              POWER RANKINGS: Warriors (-15.6) - Knicks (+0.7) + home court (-3) = Warriors -13.3

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (50-11 SU, 27-32-2 ATS, 26-35 O/U): Curry is a woeful 4-for-31 from beyond the arc on the road trip while fellow sharpshooter Klay Thompson is 7-for-33 as they get used to life without Durant, who is out at least four weeks. "We'll adjust without him," Thompson told the media. "We won't make excuses. We'll be better when he comes back. We've just got to push through. We've got enough talent, we've got enough depth." Rookie point guard Patrick McCaw has picked up a tiny bit of the slack during the rare two-game slide, making 6-of-7 shot attempts and both of his 3-point tries.

ABOUT THE KNICKS (25-37 SU, 32-30 ATS, 31-30-1 O/U): The ugliness continues in New York after the setback against the 76ers, as All-Star Carmelo Anthony followed up a 5-for-18 shooting night by calling out his team, and perhaps his coaches. "We play the same way throughout the course of the game," he told the media. "When teams make adjustments, we're still playing the same way as teams make adjustments defensively." Anthony is shooting 38.2 percent in five games since the All-Star break (2-3) while forward Kristaps Porzingis seems over a recent ankle injury, averaging 19 points and eight rebounds in two games since returning from a two-game absence.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Warriors are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 Sunday games.
                              * Knicks are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 vs. Western Conference.
                              * Under is 10-2 in Warriors last 12 vs. NBA Atlantic.
                              * Under is 5-0 in Knicks last 5 games playing on 1 days rest.
                              * Under is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings.

CONSENSUS: 63 percent of users are taking chalk with the visiting Warriors and Over is picking up 62 percent of the totals wagers.

Game of the Night – Thunder at Mavericks – 8:35 PM EST

Oklahoma City closed out its four-game homestand at 4-0 to finish off February. March hasn’t been too kind to the Thunder (35-27 SU, 34-27-1 ATS), as Billy Donovan’s squad has lost each of its first two games at Portland and Phoenix. The Thunder couldn’t hold onto a fourth quarter lead in Thursday’s 114-109 setback to the Blazers, in spite of Russell Westbrook putting up 45 points for OKC. In Friday’s 118-111 defeat to the Suns, the Thunder received 48 points from Westbrook, but the All-Star guard shot 3-of-12 from three-point range.

Dallas (25-36 SU, 34-27 ATS) has been rolling at home the last few months by compiling a terrific 9-3 SU and 11-1 ATS mark the last 12 games at American Airlines Center. The latest victory came in Friday’s 104-100 triumph over the Grizzlies as 2 ½-point underdogs, as Dallas bounced back after getting limited to a season-low 64 points in the previous matchup against Memphis in November. Rick Carlisle’s club owns a fantastic 8-1 SU/ATS mark in the favorite role at home, as Dallas opened as one-point chalk.

Last season, the Thunder knocked out the Mavericks in five games of the first round in the postseason, including a pair of double-digit victories at American Airlines Center. This season, OKC won the opening matchup at Chesapeake Energy Arena, 109-98 in late January as 9 ½-point favorites. However, Dallas was without the services of Dirk Nowitzki, Wesley Matthews, and the now-departed Deron Williams.

OKC is currently riding an 8-1 run to the OVER, while allowing at least 114 points in its last three road contests (all OVERS). Prior to cashing an OVER on Friday against Memphis, the Mavericks finished UNDER the total in the previous five contests, while busting the 100-point mark for the first time in the last seven games.

                                Rising Suns

Phoenix may not be headed to the playoffs, but the Suns are turning heads of late by winning consecutive games as a home underdogs against the Hornets and Thunder. The task doesn’t get easier when the Celtics continue their five-game road trip in the Valley, as Boston is fresh off a 20-point blowout of the Lakers on Friday night.

Brad Stevens’ team has compiled a solid 14-4 SU and 13-5 ATS record in the role of a road favorite this season, while holding off the Suns last season as 8 ½-point road favorites, 102-99. Phoenix has yet to win three consecutive games this season, as the Suns are 4-15 SU and 8-11 ATS off a victory.

                                Waving the Wand

Don’t expect many magic tricks in D.C. when Washington plays host to Orlando. The Magic own a dreadful 1-11 record in the last 12 games off a win since December, coming off Friday’s home blowout of the Heat. Orlando goes for its third victory this season against Washington as the Magic won in its previous visit to Verizon Center in December, 124-116 as 2 ½-point underdogs.

The Wizards have lost two of their past three home contests following an incredible 19-1 run in their previous 20 games in the Nation’s Capital. Scott Brooks’ club has put together a 10-2 record in their past 12 contests off a loss, but the Wizards own a 1-3 ATS mark as a double-digit favorite this season. Meanwhile, Orlando has thrived when receiving 10 points or more by compiling a 5-3 ATS record, including outright victories at San Antonio and Toronto.

                                Thorn in the Throne

Sacramento came out like gang busters in its first game following the trade of DeMarcus Cousins to New Orleans as the Kings blew out the Nuggets, 116-100 as 6 ½-point underdogs. The Kings have gone backwards since that win by losing three straight games, including a deflating home defeat to the Nets on Wednesday as Brooklyn snapped its 16-game skid. The Kings welcome in the Jazz, looking to close out their five-game homestand with a victory.

Utah rebounded from a humiliating 27-point home loss to Minnesota to knock off Brooklyn on Friday, 112-97 as 13-point favorites. The Jazz have compiled a 6-3 record in their past nine road contests, but Quin Snyder’s squad owns a dreadful 4-9 ATS record in its past 13 games away from Salt Lake City. Utah is making its first trip to Golden 1 Center after splitting a pair of home contests with Sacramento in December.

                                Stapled Shut

The Lakers have lost any semblance of a home-court advantage recently by losing four straight games at Staples Center, including all three on their current homestand. Two of those defeats have come by at least 20 points, as Boston rolled Los Angeles on Friday as 7 ½-point favorites, 115-95. Since winning three consecutive games in early January at Staples, the Lakers have dropped seven of the past nine home contests as the Pelicans invade Los Angeles on Sunday.

The Pelicans have yet to win a game with DeMarcus Cousins in the lineup, dropping all four contests, including Friday’s 101-98 overtime setback to the Spurs. New Orleans owns a 1-4 record since the All-Star break, winning the lone game with Cousins suspended against Detroit last Wednesday, but are 0-2 on the road. The Pelicans and Lakers exchanged a pair of blowouts in New Orleans back in November, while the Pels have won in three of the past four visits to Staples Center.
