Favorites profited on Thursday in the NBA with a 4-2 SU/ATS record, including a late blowout by Golden State over Detroit. The Warriors snapped a six-game ATS skid in a 127-107 rout of the Pistons as 13-point favorites, while the Spurs and Knicks also picked up double-digit home victories. Both contests played out of the country sailed OVER the total as the Nuggets/Pacers in London and Mavericks/Suns in Mexico City easily went OVER.

            Game of the Night – Celtics at Hawks (-2 ½, 212 ½) – 8:05 PM EST – ESPN

Atlanta and Boston are meeting for the first time since the Hawks knocked the Celtics out of the first round of the playoffs in six games last April. The Hawks captured all three games at Philips Arena, including holding the Celtics to seven points in the opening quarter of a Game 2 blowout. In fact, Atlanta put together a perfect 5-0 record at home against Boston last season with four of those wins coming by double-digits.

Al Horford is making his return to Atlanta as the Celtics’ forward is ranks third on the team in scoring at 15.3 points per game following a successful nine-year stint with the Hawks. Boston (24-15 SU, 21-16-2 ATS) has won seven of its past nine contests, including Wednesday’s 117-108 triumph over Washington as 5 ½-point home favorites. Guard Avery Bradley missed his third straight game with a strained Achilles’ tendon and is expected to sit out once again tonight. Boston is riding a 12-game OVER streak, including five straight away from TD Garden.

Atlanta (22-16 SU, 20-18 ATS) is the hottest team in basketball right now by winning seven consecutive contests, including pulling off a perfect 4-0 road trip. Although all four victories came against teams that are currently below .500 (Magic, Pelicans, Mavericks, Nets), Atlanta limited each squad to 97 points or fewer, while cashing the UNDER in each win. Atlanta has won each of its past three games at Philips Arena, including a pair in overtime against New York and San Antonio.

            Cold Cavaliers

Even though it’s only a two-game skid, the defending champion Cavaliers are struggling offensively. Cleveland posted 92 and 86 points the last two losses at Utah and Portland, while the Cavs have failed to cover the spread in six consecutive games. Cleveland visits Sacramento tonight in a warm-up prior to its showdown with Golden State on Monday night in Oakland.

The last time the Cavs lost back-to-back games in December, they dropped the next contest as a road favorite at Chicago. Sacramento picked up the first win on its current seven-game homestand by beating Detroit on Wednesday, as the Kings have won three of their last four home matchups with the Cavaliers.

            Southwest Showdown

The two teams sitting behind the Spurs in the Southwest division meet in Houston as the Rockets entertain the Grizzlies. Memphis shocked Houston as a home underdog the last time these teams hooked up in late December, 115-109 in the Grizzlies’ highest-scoring output in regulation this season.

Houston’s nine-game winning streak came to an abrupt halt in Wednesday’s 119-105 setback at Minnesota as the Rockets lost for the first time in 10 tries with no rest this season. The Rockets are riding a six-game hot streak at Toyota Center, but failed to cash in their last two victories against the Hornets and Thunder.

            Running out of Fuel

The Pistons trailed the Warriors by two points at halftime on Thursday night, but Golden State outscored Detroit, 41-19 in the third quarter in a 127-107 rout. Detroit travels to Utah tonight as the Pistons have slumped to a 2-5 SU/ATS record this season without rest, but both victories in this situation came on the road. Utah owns a 1-4 ATS mark in its last five opportunities as a home favorite, as the Jazz are coming off a win as a slight home underdog against Cleveland on Tuesday.

            Striking Back

The Thunder face the Timberwolves for the third time this season as Oklahoma City has captured each of the first two meetings at home. OKC is riding a three-game winning streak following Wednesday’s 103-95 home victory over Memphis, while the Thunder have won and covered five straight in the road favorite role. Minnesota closes out a four-game homestand following victories over Dallas and Houston as the Wolves hope to get guard Zach LaVine back in the lineup after missing Wednesday night with a hip injury.

            Buzzing the Liberty Bell

The Hornets have owned the 76ers the last few seasons by winning seven of the past eight matchups since the start of the 2014-15 campaign. Charlotte drilled Philadelphia, 109-93 as 13-point favorites in early November, while the Hornets blasted the 76ers twice at the Wells Fargo Center last season. However, Charlotte has lost five of six overall, including each of the first three contests on its current five-game road swing.

Philadelphia is playing its best basketball of the season by winning four of five to eclipse last season’s win total (10). The 76ers have covered five consecutive games, while going 3-1 SU and 2-2 ATS in their past four home contests.

            Missing Nets

Brooklyn didn’t have high expectations for this season, but the Nets can’t get out of their own way by losing eight straight games. In all eight of these defeats, Brooklyn has allowed at least 100 points, while busting the 100-point mark only twice in this span. Brooklyn has been limited to 97 points or less in three consecutive games, including in last night’s 104-95 setback to New Orleans as the Nets are 0-5 SU and 2-2-1 ATS on the second of back-to-backs this season.

Toronto has dropped five of its last eight games, but the Raptors still sit atop the Atlantic division at 25-13. The Raptors have cleaned up against subpar competition this season by going 7-0 SU and 6-1 ATS as a home favorite of eight points or more. The only ATS loss came to the Nets last month in a 116-104 victory as 15 ½-point favorites.

            Head-to-Head Trends

The Bucks have won six of the past eight matchups with the Heat since 2014, but Miami routed Milwaukee at American Airlines Arena in November. Milwaukee is 3-1 SU/ATS in its previous four home meetings with Miami, but all three wins came as an underdog.

The home team is riding an eight-game winning streak in the Magic/Blazers series dating back to 2013 as the teams hook up in Portland. The Blazers have captured each of the past four home meetings with the Magic, including the last three by double-digits.

                • NBA roundup: Embiid-led Sixers win third straight
                  January 14, 2017

PHILADELPHIA -- Joel Embiid had 24 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots as the surging Philadelphia 76ers beat the Charlotte Hornets 102-93 on Friday night.

Dario Saric added 15 points for the Sixers, who won their third straight and their fifth in six games.

Ersan Ilyasova finished with 12 points and Robert Covington and Sergio Rodriguez contributed 11 apiece for Philadelphia (12-25).

Nic Batum had 19 points to pace Charlotte, which shot 32.9 percent from the floor in losing for the sixth time in seven games. The season low for the Hornets (20-20) is 32.7 percent.

Kemba Walker had 17 points and Cody Zeller chipped in 15 points and 10 rebounds. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist finished with 12 points and 12 boards.

                  Timberwolves 96, Thunder 86

MINNEAPOLIS -- Karl-Anthony Towns had his 10th straight double-double with 29 points and 17 rebounds and Ricky Rubio continued his strong play with 14 points and 14 assists for Minnesota in a win against Oklahoma City.

Andrew Wiggins added 19 points for Minnesota, which won three games in a row to end a four-game homestand. Making another start in place of injured Zach LaVine, Brandon Rush hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points.

Russell Westbrook had 21 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds for his 19th triple-double of the season, the most in a season since Wilt Chamberlain had 31 in 1967-68. Enes Kanter added 21 points and eight rebounds off the bench as Oklahoma City had its three-game winning streak snapped.

                  Bucks 116, Heat 108

MILWAUKEE -- Playing at full strength for the first time in a week, Giannis Antetokounmpo had 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists as Milwaukee extended Miami's losing streak to four games with a victory at the Bradley Center.

A virus limited Antetokounmpo to nine minutes of action in Milwaukee's last two games, but he returned and hit 8 of 12 shots as the Bucks connected at a 50.6 percent clip and made 9 of 15 3-pointers.

Jabari Parker hit three 3-pointers and led the Bucks with 24 points. Tony Snell added 14 and Malcolm Brogdon finished with 13.

                  Raptors 132, Nets 113

TORONTO -- DeMar DeRozan scored a game-high 28 points as Toronto defeated Brooklyn at Air Canada Centre.

Raptors guard Cory Joseph went a perfect 7 for 7 from the field while adding 16 points and seven assists off the bench.

                  Grizzlies 110, Rockets 105

HOUSTON -- Zach Randolph posted a double-double off the bench and Memphis erased a 16-point deficit in rallying past Houston at Toyota Center.

Randolph finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds and carried the Grizzlies offensively during a 9-0 run to open the fourth quarter. Houston (31-11) dropped consecutive games for the first time this season largely due to their poor perimeter shooting. The Rockets missed 21 of 24 3-pointers in the second half.

Mike Conley had 17 points and nine assists for the Grizzlies (25-17), who also received 14 points, six rebounds and six assists from Marc Gasol and a season-high 22 points from Tony Allen before he fouled out with 3:35 to play.

                  Celtics 103, Hawks 101

ATLANTA -- Isaiah Thomas made sure that first-year Boston Celtics teammate Al Horford was a winner in his return to Atlanta, snapping the Hawks' seven-game winning streak in the process.

Thomas had the winning basket with 2.2 seconds left while scoring 13 of his game-high 28 points in the fourth quarter as the Celtics won despite the Hawks overcoming a 16-point deficit in the fourth quarter.

The Hawks tied the score on a 3-pointer by Paul Millsap with 25.6 seconds remaining, but the Celtics set up Thomas for the final shot and the diminutive guard penetrated into the lane to score in traffic.

The Celtics, who have won six of seven games, made 17 3-pointers and got a boost off the bench from Kelly Olynyk, who had a season-high 26 points.

                  Magic 115, Trail Blazers 109

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Nikola Vucevic scored a season-high 30 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Orlando to a victory over Portland at Moda Center.

Elfrid Payton contributed 19 points and seven assists as the Magic snapped a four-game losing streak.

Damian Lillard collected 34 points and eight rebounds and CJ McCollum added 26 points for the Trail Blazers, who had won two in a row.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

                            13) Falcons 36, Seahawks 20— Matt Ryan has a 2-4 career record in playoff games, with both wins at home against Seattle. Football is an emotional game; Seahawk lineman Michael Bennett went off on a reporter for a question he was asked after the game.

Side note: This result is a win for the Rams; had they waited for Kyle Shanahan to be available, this would’ve been bad. Now they already have their coach and are assembling a staff. Curious to see if Shanahan goes to San Francisco.

                            12) Patriots 34, Texans 16— Home favorites won/covered first six playoff games this month; bad for ratings, but what can you do? It is not pro wrestling or roller derby, where the finishes are scripted. Sometimes the top teams are just a lot better than the teams below them.

                            11) Upsets of the Day: Saint Louis (+14) got their first A-14 win, 63-56 at George Mason, and Brown (+12) upset Penn 82-70 in the Palestra. Stephen Spieth (Jordan’s brother) had 22 points for the victorious Bears and yes, he really is Jordan Spieth’s brother.

                            10) Louisville 78, Duke 69— Blue Devils are 2-3 in ACC, their worst league start since 1996, last time Mike Krzyzewski had his back operated on. Duke is fairly ordinary without big man Amile Jefferson, who has a bad foot (again). Louisville sometimes looks like they practice without a basketball, but boy can they defend.

                            9) West Virginia 74, Texas 72— Longhorns played their hearts out in first game without leading scorer Tevin Mack (suspended), but came up just short. This was just second win for West Virginia in their last eight games with Texas, which is floundering this year at 7-10, 1-4 Big X.

                            8) Mississippi State 67, Texas A&M 59— Starters in this game: 4 freshman, 5 sophomores and one lone junior. Two good teams; Ben Howland is quietly assembling a very good team down there in Starkville.

                            7) Loyola Marymount 79, Portland 78— Just watched a replay of this game; Portland led 78-73 with 0:45 left and then collapsed, just an awful loss, but LMU starts three seniors and they’re struggling, so unless they have a great recruiting year, they’ll get pummeled next year.

                            6) Illinois State 76, Wichita State 62— Big win for the Redbirds, who are challenging Wichita for MVC supremacy; it is possible the Valley could get two teams in NCAAs this year.

                            5) UCLA 83, Utah 82— If you had the Bruins -3, a pretty bad beat. Welsh hit two FT’s with 0:01 left to give UCLA an 83-80 lead, with ONE SECOND LEFT. Somehow, Utah throws a long pass right under the basket and the kid hits a short jumper and he celebrates like they just forced OT, except THEY WERE DOWN THREE POINTS. Why do these arenas have scoreboards?

                            4) UTEP 66, Florida Atlantic 65 OT— Miners came into this weekend on a 12-game losing skid, but they won both home games, both by a point in OT. Winning helps and losing doesn’t.

                            3) TCU 84, Iowa State 77— Is Jamie Dixon National Coach of the Year so far? After going 50-79 the last four years (8-64 in league play), Horned Frogs are 14-3 this year, 3-2 in Big X play and there are no easy games in the Big X. They beat a very experienced Cyclone team here.

                            2) Richmond 70, St Joe’s 66— Spiders were 5-5 when they inserted freshman De’Monte Buckingham into the starting lineup; they’re 6-1 since, are 5-0 in A-14 with three road wins.

1— San Diego 88, BYU 75— BYU won here 69-67 LY; two nights later, the teams met again in Provo and BYU crushed the Toreros 91-33. 91-33, an ugly night.

Revenge was sweet last night, as an 11-point underdog San Diego squad that played seven guys; three freshmen, two sophs, a junior from Germany and a senior, beat the Cougars and evened their record at 9-9.
