            • NBA roundup: Cavs prevail after blowing big lede
              January 9, 2017

PHOENIX -- Kyrie Irving, LeBron James and Kevin Love combined for 80 points and the Cleveland Cavaliers blew a 20-point third-quarter lead but hung on to beat the Phoenix Suns 120-116 on Sunday.

James had 12 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter, including two 3-pointers 25 seconds apart to stretch a two-point Cleveland edge to a 115-109 lead with 2:47 left. Irving scored 27 points and Love added 25 points for Cleveland, which beat Phoenix for the fourth straight time.

The Cavaliers won 15 of their last 18 games and have their best 36-game start since going 30-6 to start the 2008-09 season. Cleveland is 8-2 against the Western Conference.

Eric Bledsoe had 31 points and Devin Booker added 28 for the Suns, who missed a chance for their first three-game winning streak since Nov. 12-16, 2015.

              Warriors 117, Kings 106

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Losers after putting up a 24-point lead in their previous contest, Golden State overcame a lethargic first half thanks to 17 second-half points from Stephen Curry and beat Sacramento at the Golden 1 Center.

Curry finished with 30 and Kevin Durant added 28 as Golden State avoided back-to-back losses. The Warriors have played 124 straight contests without losing consecutively, the longest streak in NBA history. Klay Thompson finished with 18 points, and Zaza Pachulia scored 10, and the Warriors beat the Kings for the 13th straight time. Draymond Green contributed nine points, 10 assists and seven rebounds.

Rudy Gay, playing in only his second game since missing nine of 10 because of a hip flexor, scored a game-high 23 points for Sacramento, but the Kings lost the first three on a season-high seven-game homestand, and welcome defending champion Cleveland on Friday.

              Rockets 129, Raptors 122

TORONTO -- James Harden scored 40 points and added 11 assists and 10 rebounds for his 10th triple-double of the season and Houston came back to defeat Toronto to extend 9ts winning streak to eight games.

Harden has had at least a double-double in 17 straight games. Montrezl Harrell scored 28 points and Eric Gordon added 19 -- both off the bench -- and Trevor Ariza had 17 points for Houston.

DeMar DeRozan led Toronto with 36 points and DeMarre Carroll added 26. Kyle Lowry scored 12 and Norman Powell and Cory Joseph had 10 each for the Raptors, who have lost two in a row.

              Grizzlies 88, Jazz 79

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Point guard Mike Conley scored 19 points with nine assists and Memphis held off Utah at FedExForum.

Power forward Zach Randolph gave Memphis a double-double off the bench with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Marc Gasol (17 points) hit three free throws to hike the lead to 85-77 and Utah never drew closer than six points.

The Jazz committed 18 turnovers that Memphis turned into 26 points. Forward Gordon Hayward led the Jazz with 22 points and forward Trey Lyles chipped in 11 points off the bench.

              Pistons 125, Trail Blazers 124 (2OT)

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Kentavious Caldwell-Pope's 3-pointer with 9.4 seconds left in double overtime lifted Detroit over Portland Trail at Moda Center.

Reggie Jackson scored 31 points, Andre Drummond contributed 28 points and 14 rebounds, and Caldwell-Pope added 26 points for the Pistons. Detroit, which edged the Charlotte Hornets on Thursday, won consecutive games for the first time in more than a month.

CJ McCollum scored 35 points, Allen Crabbe came off the bench for a career-high 30 points and Damian Lillard collected 20 points and nine rebounds for the Trail Blazers.

              Lakers 111, Magic 85

LOS ANGELES -- Julius Randle scored 19 points and D'Angelo Russell and Brandon Ingram contributed 17 apiece as Los Angeles beat Orlando at Staples Center.

Timofey Mozgov collected 15 points and nine rebounds for the Lakers, winners of three of their last four games. Los Angeles forward Luol Deng had 11 points.

Evan Fournier, Serge Ibaka and Nikola Vucevic paced the Magic with 19 points each. Ibaka also grabbed 10 rebounds while Bismark Biyombo had 10 points and 11 rebounds for Orlando, which has lost five of its last six contests.

              76ers 105, Nets 95

NEW YORK -- Rookie Joel Embiid scored 20 points in 24 minutes as Philadelphia rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit and matched its win total from last season with a victory over Brooklyn .

Dario Saric also scored 18 and came within three of his career high as the Sixers won for the third time in four games and improved to 6-8 in their last 14 games. Robert Covington overcame getting poked in the eye twice and added 15 while Ersan Ilyasova contributed 14 as Philadelphia won despite shooting 39.4 percent.

Brook Lopez ended a streak of four straight games under 20 points and scored 26 points, but only eight were after halftime when the Nets. Justin Hamilton added 14 and Bojan Bogdanovic had 14 and eight as the Nets committed 22 turnovers and dropped their sixth straight.

              Wizards 107, Bucks 101

MILWAUKEE -- Jabari Parker scored 28 points and Malcom Brogdon added a career-high 22 but it wasn't enough for Milwaukee to overcome Bradley Beal and John Wall, who combined for 42 to lead Washington to victory.

Beal scored 27 while Wall added 16 for the Wizards, who also got 20 from Markieff Moriss and 17 from Kelly Oubre, Jr. Washington shot 48.8 percent from the floor and knocked down 10 of 32 3-pointers.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee's leader in every major statistical category, was a late scratch due to illness so Mirza Teletovic got the start in his place while Michael Beasley and veteran Jason Terry also saw extended action.

              Clippers 98, Heat 86

LOS ANGELES -- J.J. Redick scored 25 points, and Los Angeles coasted over shorthanded Miami at Staples Center

Chris Paul added 19 points, 18 assists and six rebounds for the Clippers, who won their fourth in a row. The number of assists allowed Paul to top 8,000 career assists. Paul now has 8,012. Marreese Speights delivered 19 points off the bench for Los Angeles. Brandon Bass contributed 12 points.

Goran Dragic led the Heat with 24 points. Hassan Whiteside, who returned after missing four games with a right retinal contusion, chipped in 15 points and 13 rebounds for Miami. Miami's Tyler Johnson and James Johnson scored 12 points apiece.

              • Monday’s six-pack

                — Jason Day signed a deal with Nike, reportedly worth $10M a year, just for apparel and shoes. Nike is out of the equipment business. Day uses TaylorMade clubs.

                — Richmond 77, George Washington 70— Spiders are 3-0 in Atlantic 14.

                — Northwestern 74, Nebraska 66— Will Wildcats make NCAAs for first time?

                — Purdue 64, Wisconsin 55— First conference loss of the year for the Badgers.

                — Dabo Swinney is the 5th Alabama alum to become Clemson’s football coach.

                — Next weekend’s NFL schedule: Saturday: Seahawks-Falcons and Texans-Patriots. Sunday will be Steelers-Chiefs and Packers-Cowboys.

                Quote of the Day

“Coach Dykes clearly built up our program — both on the field and in the classroom — and he leaves Cal in a stronger position than when he arrived. For that alone, he deserves credit and our thanks. After our bowl win last season, we showed our commitment to him with a contract extension. But after looking at a number of factors after the end of this season, I felt that we needed a change of direction for the good of our student-athletes and our program.

“We’re not connecting this in any way to on-field performance. I’m very pleased with what Sonny has done with the culture of the football program and with the academic performance of our student-athletes.”
Cal athletic director Mike Williams, on the odd firing of football coach Sonny Dykes

Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend

                13) Cal Bears fired football coach Sonny Dykes Sunday, a very odd time for this to happen, setting the Interweb on fire with rumors that Chip Kelly will be coming to Berkeley.

Dykes gets roughly $3.5M to take a hike and shouldn’t be out of work for too long, if he doesn’t want to be. He would be an interesting guy to listen to on TV, seeing how his one winning season in his four years at Cal led to Jared Goff being drafted by the Rams.

                12) Odd/surprising Fact of the Day: When the undefeated Dolphins beat Pittsburgh in the 1972 AFC title game, they had to do it in Three Rivers Stadium. How does an undefeated team have to go on the road for a conference championship game?????

                11) When the Raiders drafted kicker/punter Janikowski/Lechler in the 4th/5th rounds of the 2000 Draft, they twice passed on Tom Brady. Oakland didn’t have a 6th round pick, which is where New England drafted Brady, 30 picks after the Saints took Marc Bulger.

                10) Stumbled across an odd movie the other night: “Black and White” which had Robert Downey Jr, Claudia Schiffer and Marla Maples (Donald Trump’s ex-wife) in it. Made in 1999, Mike Tyson is also in the movie, as is former NBA star Allan Houston, who had a fairly big role.

I watched a few minutes of the movie and kept thinking “that guy looks like Allan Houston” until I looked it up and indeed, it was him.

                9) On the heels of the Nevada-New Mexico game late Saturday, there was another epic comeback Sunday afternoon: Stony Brook outscored Albany 21-0 over the final 5:55 to win, 72-70. Albany is my alma mater, so this is bad news, but better now than in March.

                8) Now that Gregg Williams is the new DC in Cleveland, I wonder if he’ll bring his son Blake along to work for him. Blake Williams was with the Rams with his father but got let go when he was DC during his father’s 1-year suspension- apparently the other coaches couldn’t stand him.

Jeff Fisher’s son Brandon (a DB coach) is expected to follow Williams to Cleveland.

                7) Division I basketball teams have a scholarship limit of 13; Nevada has a starter injured and also has four transfers sitting out this year, meaning they only have 8 scholarship players right now, though the transfers can at least practice.

                6) OK, I was surprised to learn this weekend that dolphins are actually not fish, they are aquatic mammals. I’m thinking I was much smarter as a teenager than I am now.

                5) One of my all-time favorite stories is about Patriots’ owner Robert Kraft going to the Soviet Union on business and meeting Vladimir Putin; at some point, Kraft takes his Super Bowl ring off and shows it to Putin, actually handing it to him.

Putin takes the ring, puts it in his pocket and stalks off, with his henchmen protecting him. Kraft never saw the ring again— ha!!!!

Apparently Kraft appealed to the Obama administration to try and get the ring back, to which they replied, “Let it go.” Somehow, I’m sure he’ll blame that on Roger Goodell, too.

                4) Baseball trivia: Padres’ lefty Brad Hand pitched on consecutive days 29 times last year, most of any big league pitcher. To me, the number is more interesting than who did it.

                3) Steelers 30, Dolphins 12— Coaching malpractice 101— This game was over long before it actually ended, but Roethlisberger stayed in till the finish and took a big shot with 4:23 left and Steelers up 30-12. He was in a walking boot after the game. Why is he passing with an 18-point lead and 4:23 left???? Brilliant!!!!

                2) Packers 38, Giants 13— Coaching malpractice 102— Green Bay is up 14-6 late in third quarter and gets stuffed on consecutive running plays, giving them 4th-and-1 around their own 40. With Vince Lombardi turning over in his grave, they went for it and didn’t make it. Giants scored a TD a few plays later to cut the lead to 14-13. This was really an amateurish decision.

Packers played really well after the Giants’ TD and won going away, but you have to wonder when the most important person in a $1B business makes a decision like that one.

1— Monday is Bart Starr’s 83rd birthday. Winning QB in the first two Super Bowls, he ruined my 8th birthday by beating the Rams in a divisional playoff game. Happy birthday anyway.

                    Wild Card round

                    Raiders (12-4) @ Texans (9-7)—
Two teams with QB issues; rookie 3rd-stringer Cook is making his first NFL start this week- he was 14-21/150 in relief in Denver LW, his NFL debut. Raiders won 8 of last 10 games but loss of QB Carr and loss to Broncos LW cost them first-round bye and any real chance of getting to Super Bowl. Oakland (-6.5) beat Houston 27-20 in a Monday night game in Mexico City Nov 21 (week after Raiders’ bye). Oakland is 6-2 on road, 3-2 as road underdog but that was with Carr playing. Osweiler starts at QB for Texans, after he was benched for #2 QB Savage, who then got a concussion. Houston won three of last four games, is 7-1 at home, 3-2-1 as home favorite. Oakland is in playoffs for first time since losing Super Bowl 14 years ago. Texans are in playoffs for 4th time in last six years. Home side won #4-5 seed AFC game four of last five years.

Lions (9-7) @ Seahawks (10-5-1)— Detroit lost its last two games to miss out on winning NFC North for first time since 1993; they’ve won one playoff game since 1957, are in playoffs for 3rd time in last 17 years. Stafford has an injured finger on throwing hand; Detroit scored 17 pts/game in losing last three games, were -7 in turnovers in last four. Lions have trailed in 4th quarter in every game but one this season; they’re 3-5 on road, 3-4 as road dogs. Seahawks split last six games, are 4-3-1 as home favorites this year- they played only four playoff teams this year, going 3-1. Detroit lost weird 13-10 night game in Seattle LY, when Seahawks scored controversial late TD. Lions are 5-8 overall vs Seattle, 1-6 here, with only win back in 1999. Under is 8-2 in Detroit’s last ten games, 1-4 in Seattle’s last five. Road team is 4-4 in NFC #3-6 game last eight years; underdogs covered four of last six years.

Dolphins (10-6) @ Steelers (11-5)— Dolphins were 1-4 when Steelers went to South Beach and lost 30-15; TY was 474-297, Pitt had only 15 first downs. Fish are 4-4 on road, 3-3 as road underdogs, but 4 of last 5 teams they visited either fired their coach or half their assistants. Miami is in playoffs for first time since ’08; their last playoff win was in 2000. Dolphins have rookie coach, backup QB starting; they’re 9-2 in last 11 games, losing mostly meaningless game to Patriots LW. Pittsburgh is in playoffs for 3rd year in row and 11th time in last 16 years; they won last seven games overall but covered only one of last five at home. Three of last four Steeler games went over total; last six Miami games (and 9 of last 10) went over. Miami is 2-1 all-time vs Steelers in playoff games, but last one of those was in ’84. Road team won AFC #3-6 game last three years and six of last eight; underdogs covered five of last seven.

Giants (11-5) @ Packers (10-6)— Giants won playoff games in Lambeau in both 2007/2011, so have to be confident here. New Jersey (+7) lost 23-16 at Lambeau back in Week 4, running ball 15 times for 43 yards in game where Packers outgained them by 189 yards. Green Bay allowed 153 points in a 4-game midseason skid, then recovered, won its last six games; they’re 6-2 at home, 4-2-1 as home favorites. New Jersey went 9-2 after the Lambeau loss; they’re 4-4 on road, 1-3-1 as a road underdog, with only cover LW in meaningless win over Redskins. Giants held five of last seven opponents under 17 points; they’re 2-5 this season when allowing 23+ points, 9-0 when allowing less than 23. Last four Green Bay games went over total; under is 7-1 in Giants’ last eight games. Road team won NFC #4-5 seed game three of last four years, but favorites covered four of last five.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……..

                                13) Clemson 35, Alabama 31— One of greatest college football games ever. Some quick thoughts:
                                — Clemson ran 98 plays from scrimmage, had 31 first downs. Against Alabama.
                                — Crimson Tide was just 2-15 on third down. Hard to win with a freshman QB, even if he is a really good freshman.
                                — Deshaun Watson threw for 420 yards; he threw for 405 vs Alabama LY. Can’t wait to see where he gets drafted in the NFL.
                                — Alabama led 24-14 after the third quarter; at that point, no one thought they were losing.
                                — I had great fun watching ESPNews, with six D-I coaches and Brian Griese watching the game. Three of the six happen to be ACC coaches. It was excellent TV.
                                — Boston College coach Steve Addazio was good in studio but he didn’t know the clock doesn’t run during a PAT, which seems strange.
                                — BYU coach Kilani Sitake had the line of the night, when coaches were busting his chops about his players going on Mormon missions: “If it was a great system to develop athletes, Alabama would be doing it.”
                                — Clemson’s last national title was in 1981; their coach then was Danny Ford, who just like Dabo Swinney, is an Alabama graduate.

                                12) This past weekend was first time in 15+ years that all four home favorites won/covered in the Wild Card round of the NFL playoffs. All four favorites covered in 2012, but Seattle was a road favorite in Washington that year.

                                11) DeMarcus Cousins is a really good player, but has anger management issues; he already has 10 technical fouls this year. When he gets to 16, it is an automatic one-game suspension.

                                10) Valparaiso 81, Detroit 74— This game was Sunday; Crusaders were 33-42 on the foul line, the visiting Titans 4-9. In a 7-point game. Detroit got hosed.

                                9) Clippers/Lakers both played at home Sunday at Staples Center, the Clippers against Miami in the afternoon, Lakers against Orlando at night. Wonder how many people were at both games?

                                8) Over last three years, #1 seeds are 6-0SU in the divisional round (3-3 vs spread). Over last five years, underdogs are 11-7-1 vs spread in all games of the divisional round- 49ers-Panthers game was a pick ‘em in 2013.

                                7) Jacksonville promoted interim coach Doug Marrone to head coach, hired Tom Coughlin as an executive, and gave their GM a 2-year contract extension.

                                6) Branden Grace finished last at the SBS Tournament of Champions this weekend at Kapalua; he cashed a check for $61,000. Winning a PGA Tour event has many bonuses, this being one of them, a spot in the TOC that guarantees you a nice check for the next year.

                                5) I’d like to see an NBA team skip having gameday walk-thrus, see if it helped keep players fresher, both mentally/physically. Walk-thrus became a thing in the 70’s. Just wondering if the game would be crisper if players were only in the gym once a day on game day.

                                4) Minnesota Vikings fired QB coach Scott Turner, who is Norv Turner’s son. Norv may have to take another OC job in order to get his son another job.

                                3) Wake Forest has lost 25 ACC road games in a row. No bueno.

                                2) Georgetown 83, St John’s 55— Red Storm are impossible to handicap; they get crushed in this game, after they won by 33 at Syracuse, and upset Butler. Hoyas won by 28, didn’t appear to play that well.

1— Pelicans 110, Knicks 96— So you want to be an NBA coach? Derrick Rose was a no-show and didn’t call; he had Knick officials concerned enough that they checked his apartment. Apparently he had a family issue and went back to Chicago.

I hope Rose and his family/friends are all healthy.

That said, Derrick Rose is making $21,323,250 this year, or $260,039.63 per game. In this day and age, if you cannot text/call a teammate, coach or the GM when you’re going to miss a game, then you shouldn’t be paid for that game. Its not that hard.

                                Quote of the Day

“I mean, I don’t really want to talk too much about it because I don’t really know what the situation is,. Obviously Derrick is one of our better players. And when he is not here it is tough. But I am just happy that everything is OK with him.”
Joakim Noah, on Derrick Rose’s absence Monday night
