        • Friday's Tip Sheet
          January 27, 2017

Game of the Night – Grizzlies at Blazers – 10:05 PM EST

Memphis (27-20 SU, 23-24 ATS) has been one of the early surprises in the first half of the season, even though the Grizzlies have lost five of their last eight games. David Fizdale’s squad embarks on a six-game road swing following Wednesday’s 101-99 home triumph over the Raptors, but Memphis failed to cash as five-point favorites. Center Marc Gasol led the way for Memphis with 42 points as the Grizzlies held off a furious Toronto rally in the fourth quarter.

The Blazers (20-27 SU, 19-28 ATS) can still turn things around following a slow start as Portland is coming off consecutive victories over the Celtics and Lakers. In Wednesday’s 105-98 victory over Los Angeles, the backcourt duo of Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum each scored 24 points as the Blazers beat Los Angeles for the third time this month. The Blazers have struggled to cover numbers of late as a home favorite by posting a 2-4 ATS mark the last six opportunities, while cashing in one of the past six contests overall.

Portland and Memphis split the first two meetings this season at FedEx Forum as the Grizzlies captured the last matchup, 88-86 on December 8. The Grizzlies are currently on a 7-1 run to the UNDER the last eight contests, including three straight UNDERS on the highway. Portland continues a five-game homestand as the Blazers face the Warriors on Sunday evening, as Terry Stotts’ team is 2-1 this season in the game prior to facing Golden State.

          Bull Quit?

It’s a bitter winter in Chicago and we’re not talking about the weather. The Bulls had elevated expectations before the season with the signings of veteran guards Dwyane Wade and Rajon Rondo, but Chicago sits below .500 at 23-24 heading into tonight’s home contest with Wade’s former team, Miami. Wade and leading scorer Jimmy Butler criticized teammates following Monday’s meltdown in a 119-114 home loss to Atlanta in which the Bulls allowed 41 points in the fourth quarter.

Miami is playing its best basketball of the season by winning five straight games, including Wednesday’s massive comeback in a 109-106 triumph at Brooklyn. The Heat outscored the Nets, 38-17 in the fourth quarter, paced by Dion Waiters’ 24 points and game-clinching three-pointer in the final 10 seconds. Miami owns a profitable 11-8 ATS mark in its last 19 games as a road underdog, which includes a cover at the United Center in a 105-100 setback as 9 ½-point ‘dogs on December 10.

          Sinking Knicks

New York hasn’t won consecutive games in over a month, while owning a dreadful 4-14 record since Christmas. The Knicks return home from a brief 1-1 road trip, capped off by Wednesday’s 103-95 defeat at Dallas as New York hosts Charlotte. Jeff Hornacek’s club has dropped seven of the past eight games at Madison Square Garden, but four of those losses have come by three points or fewer.

The Hornets head to Manhattan following home setbacks to the Wizards and Warriors this week, while Charlotte is riding a seven-game UNDER streak. The road has been rough to the Hornets of late by losing six straight games away from the Spectrum Center, while looking to avenge a 113-111 overtime defeat in New York on November 25.

          Winning Wizards

Washington continues to pick up victories following a slow start as the Wizards are currently on a 9-2 SU/ATS run, which includes seven consecutive covers. The Wizards head down to Atlanta this evening to face the Hawks in a battle of the top two teams in the Southeast division. Washington captured its 14th straight home win in Tuesday’s 123-108 triumph over Boston, but the Wizards have stumbled to a 3-5 record in their last eight games away from the Verizon Center.

The Hawks have been rolling as well by compiling a 12-3 SU and 10-5 ATS mark in the past 15 games, capped off by Wednesday’s 119-114 victory at Chicago. The home team has won each of the first two meetings between Washington and Atlanta this season, while the Hawks own a 6-2 SU and 5-3 ATS record in the previous eight matchups with the Wizards at Philips Arena.

          Tired Pacers

Indiana knocked off Minnesota on Thursday night, 109-103 as three-point underdogs as the Pacers return home to host the Kings tonight. Nate McMillan’s team has not responded well with no rest, owning a terrible 1-7 SU/ATS record on the second of a back-to-back this season. Indiana has failed to cover in four straight opportunities in the favorite role, while going 2-4 SU and 1-5 ATS off a road victory.

Sacramento continues its eight-game road swing, but the Kings are playing with some momentum following a pair of victories at Detroit and Cleveland. The Kings erased a double-digit fourth quarter deficit to force overtime on Wednesday and upset the Cavs as 10 ½-point underdogs, 116-112. Sacramento is playing with revenge tonight after blowing a 21-point lead in a 106-100 home setback to Indiana earlier this month, while the Kings have won in its last two trips to Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

          Grounded Rockets

Houston is looking to threaten Golden State and San Antonio for Western Conference supremacy, but the Rockets have stumbled of late by losing at Milwaukee and Boston. The Rockets have allowed at least 120 points in each of their past three losses, while dropping four of their previous six contests away from Toyota Center. Houston travels to Philadelphia to face a 76ers’ team that has won 10 of their past 13 games, including six consecutive victories as a home underdog.

          Trouble in Paradise

The defending champion Cavaliers aren’t playing their best basketball right now after suffering their third consecutive loss in Wednesday’s overtime defeat to the Kings. Cleveland looks to get on track against Brooklyn tonight as the Nets have lost 14 of their previous 15 games. Brooklyn has covered three of five times in this stretch as a double-digit underdog, including as 13-point ‘dogs in a 116-108 setback earlier this month.

To cut the Cavs a break, each loss during this three-game skid has come by four points or less with two of those defeats coming in overtime. However, Cleveland has struggled to cover numbers off a home loss this season by posting a 2-2 SU and 1-3 ATS ledger off a setback at Quicken Loans Arena.

          Head-to-Head Trends

-- The Celtics blasted the Magic, 117-87 in early December as the two Eastern Conference foes meet tonight in Boston. The Magic have struggled to say the least in Beantown over the years by losing 12 consecutive visits to TD Garden, with the last regular season win in Boston coming on February 7, 2010.

-- The Raptors have dropped five straight games as they host the Bucks tonight. Toronto has had its way with Milwaukee recently by winning eight of the last nine meetings since the 2014-15 season, including a pair of victories this season. Milwaukee has won only once in its previous seven visits to Air Canada Center, while the Bucks have lost four straight road games overall.

-- San Antonio has won each of the last five matchups with New Orleans, including a pair of home victories this season. The Pelicans have seen success at home against the Spurs by covering nine of the last 10 meetings in the Big Easy, while winning three of the last four at Smoothie King Center with San Antonio.

            January 26, 2017

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Oklahoma City forward Enes Kanter is out indefinitely after fracturing his right forearm punching a chair Thursday night during the Thunder's victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

Thunder coach Billy Donovan said X-rays showed the break. Kanter left the game for good with 7:34 left in the second quarter.

Kanter is one of the NBA's top reserves and is the Thunder's third-leading scorer at 14.4 points per game. He finished third in balloting for the league's top sixth man last season, and his scoring average is up this season.

            • Bulls' Rondo lashes out at Wade, Butler in Instagram rant
              January 26, 2017

CHICAGO (AP) Bulls guard Rajon Rondo criticized Dwyane Wade and Jimmy Butler in an Instagram rant Thursday for questioning the team's desire.

Rondo fired back one day after Chicago's stars went off following a rough loss to Atlanta. Though he didn't mention Wade and Butler by name, it seemed clear he was referring to them in a post that accompanied a photo of him with former Boston Celtics teammates Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce.

Rondo, apparently referring to Garnett and Pierce, repeatedly used the term ''my vets,'' saying they would ''never go to the media.'' He wrote they ''didn't take days off,'' that they ''didn't care about their numbers,'' that they ''played for the team.''

''When we lost, they wouldn't blame us,'' Rondo said. ''They took responsibility and got in the gym. They showed the young guys what it meant to work. Even in Boston when we had the best record in the league, if we lost a game, you could hear a pin drop on the bus. They showed us the seriousness of the game.''

Rondo also seemed to question coach Fred Hoiberg's control of the team.

''My vets didn't have an influence on the coaching staff,'' he said. ''They couldn't change the plan because it didn't work for them. I played under one of the greatest coaches (Doc Rivers), and he held everyone accountable.''

Wade and Butler lashed out at the team following a 119-114 loss to Atlanta on Wednesday night. The Hawks ended the game on a 19-4 run to wipe out a 10-point deficit, and both stars ripped the team to the media.

Wade, the 12-time All-Star and three-time champion with Miami, took aim at the younger players, saying, ''I'm 35 years old, man. I have three (NBA) championships. It shouldn't hurt me more than it hurts them. They have to want it.''

Butler said his team doesn't deliver effort on a consistent basis and doesn't take losses as hard as it should.

Rondo defended the younger players, saying, ''The young guys work. They show up. They don't deserve blame. If anything is questionable, it's the leadership.''

The Bulls are 23-24 after missing the playoffs for the first time since 2008 at 42-40. Their next game is Friday against Miami at home.

Chicago signed Wade and Rondo hoping two veterans with championship rings could add some stability and leadership. But it's been a rocky season for the mercurial point guard.

Rondo, who came with a history of clashing with coaches, got benched for poor play after beginning the season as a starter. He is now in a backup role.

The team also suspended the four-time All-Star for one game for detrimental conduct in December.

''I may be a lot of things, but I'm not a bad teammate,'' Rondo said. ''My goal is to pass what I learned along.''

              • Knicks shopping Anthony to multiple teams
                January 26, 2017

It appears the New York Knicks are badly trying to trade Carmelo Anthony.

The Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers are discussing a possible deal for Anthony that does not include Chris Paul, Blake Griffin or DeAndre Jordan being traded to New York, the New York Daily News reported.

A source told USA Today that the Clippers have a strong interest in adding Anthony.

The Knicks have also contacted the Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics about a possible trade involving Anthony, The Vertical reported.

The report that the Knicks talked to the Cavaliers comes one day after ESPN reported that Cleveland refused to give up Kevin Love in a proposed trade involving Anthony.

A Clippers deal for Anthony would likely include one or two players from the group that includes Jamal Crawford, J.J. Redick and Austin Rivers.

The Celtics have several young players and first-round draft picks that might be attractive to the Knicks in a trade.

However, no deal appears to be imminent.

Last week, Anthony told Knicks president Phil Jackson that he did not want to be traded. Nonetheless, the Knicks seem to be pursuing a trade anyway, hoping Anthony will waive his no-trade clause if the Knicks could find the right trading partner.

On Wednesday, Anthony told media members that he has not discussed any possible trades with Knicks officials.

When Anthony was asked if he believes the Knicks are trying to get rid of him, Anthony said, according to the Daily News, "I don't know. I honestly don't know.

"If they want to go in a different direction, that's something I have to consider."

Yahoo Sports reported the Clippers are a team Anthony might consider joining.

The NBA trade deadline is Feb. 23.

Anthony has $54 million and next two years remaining on his existing contract. He is making $24.6 million this season.

His deal includes a player option for the 2018-19 season, and he also has a trade bonus in his contract, which could complicate trade discussions.

Game of the Night – Clippers at Warriors – 8:30 PM EST – ABC

Los Angeles (30-17 SU, 23-24 ATS) continues a five-game road swing as the Clippers return to the west coast following Tuesday’s meltdown in a 121-110 loss at Philadelphia. The Clippers squandered a 19-point lead as L.A. couldn’t capitalize off an impressive away victory the night before in Atlanta. Blake Griffin returned to the Clippers’ lineup on Tuesday after missing the previous 18 games with a knee injury. Griffin struggled from the floor by scoring 12 points on 3-of-11 shooting, but did pull down 11 rebounds.

Golden State (39-7 SU, 21-24-1 ATS) returns home following a four-game trip, capped off by 113-103 triumph at Charlotte as 9 ½-point favorites. The Warriors are riding an 8-1 SU and 6-3 ATS run in the last nine contests, including four consecutive victories at Oracle Arena. Steve Kerr’s squad has stepped up defensively during this stretch by cashing the UNDER eight times, including holding four opponents to below 100 points.

This series has been owned by the Warriors recently with Golden State beating Los Angeles seven consecutive times. The last victory by the Clippers over the Warriors came at Staples Center on Christmas night in 2014, but Golden State captured the first meeting this season, 115-98 as four-point road favorites in December.

The Warriors jumped out to a 37-19 advantage after one quarter and never looked back as Klay Thompson led Golden State with 24 points. Stephen Curry chipped in 19 points for the Warriors, but last season’s MVP failed to hit a three-pointer in eight attempts.

The Clippers have covered in three of the past five trips to Oakland, but haven’t won at Golden State in the regular season since Christmas of 2011. Los Angeles continues to play without point guard Chris Paul, who is sidelined with a thumb injury. Austin Rivers has filled in nicely for Paul by putting up 27 points in Monday’s victory at Atlanta and 20 points in Tuesday’s defeat at Philadelphia.

                              Let’s Do It Again

The Nuggets held off the Suns on Thursday, 127-120 to barely cash as 6 ½-point home favorites. Forward Nikola Jokic led the way for Denver with 29 points and 14 rebounds, but suffered a hip injury and will not play on Saturday night. Denver heads to Phoenix looking for the four-game season sweep of the Suns, as the Nuggets have racked up at least 120 points in each of the first three victories over Phoenix. Mike Malone’s squad is currently on a 7-1 ATS run, although the Nuggets have dropped four of their past five road games.

The Suns had covered seven of nine games prior to Thursday’s defeat at Denver, as Phoenix tries to turn around its recent home woes. Earl Watson’s club has lost four straight games at Talking Stick Resort Arena, while each of those games sailed OVER the total.

                              Tired Legs

Both the Kings and Hornets blew fourth quarter leads on Friday as these two teams meet up in Charlotte. Sacramento squandered a 10-point advantage with six minutes remaining as Indiana rallied for a 115-111 home triumph in overtime, snapping the Kings’ modest two-game winning streak. The Kings have covered four straight contests on this eight-game road swing, as their longest ATS hot streak this season is five games, coming back in November.

The Hornets held a six-point advantage with five minutes left in regulation before falling short to the Knicks, 110-107. Charlotte has lost three straight since a three-game winning streak, as the Hornets try to end a two-game slide at home. Last season, the Kings and Hornets went to overtime in each of their two matchups with Charlotte winning each time, including erasing a 22-point deficit in a home win in November 2015.

                              Heating Up

Don’t look now, but Miami has won six consecutive games following Friday’s 100-88 triumph over scuffling Chicago as seven-point road underdogs. The Heat return home, where they have won each of their past four games to host the Pistons. Detroit was the last team to win at American Airlines Arena back on January 1 as the Pistons rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit for a 107-98 victory as 6 ½-point favorites.

The Pistons have been off since Monday’s 109-104 home defeat to the Kings, snapping a three-game winning streak. Stan Van Gundy’s squad has lost six of their past nine games away from the Palace of Auburn Hills, but Detroit is victorious in two of its last three visits to south Florida.

                              Buck Off

Milwaukee began 2017 in a prime position for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, but the Bucks have slid off course recently. Jason Kidd’s team has dropped seven of their last eight games, including Friday’s 102-86 setback at Toronto, their third loss to the Raptors this season. The Bucks face another solid Atlantic division squad on Saturday as the Celtics invade BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Boston picked up its second consecutive victory by blowing out Orlando on Friday, 128-98, even though forward Al Horford sat out with a groin injury. Horford is expected back in the lineup on Saturday as the Celtics have lost three of their past four games away from TD Garden. Both the Celtics and Bucks have gone the opposite way this season with no rest as Boston owns a 7-3 SU and 6-4 ATS mark, while Milwaukee has slumped to a 2-7 SU/ATS ledger on the second end of a back-to-back.

                              Head-to-Head Trends

Utah and Memphis hook up in a solid matchup of Western Conference teams with eyes on the postseason in Salt Lake City. The Jazz have struggled with the Grizzlies this season by losing two of three meetings, while the winner of the last two games has failed to bust the 88-point mark. Memphis has fared well with no rest following Friday’s game at Portland by compiling an 8-3 SU and 7-4 ATS mark on the second of a back-to-back set.

Brooklyn plays with no rest on Saturday at Minnesota after covering as 17-point underdogs in Friday’s 124-116 setback at Cleveland. The Nets go for the season sweep of the Wolves after knocking off Minnesota at Barclays Center in November, 119-110 as four-point underdogs. Minnesota is listed as a double-digit favorite for only the second time this season after blasting Philadelphia in the first time in this role in November.
