          • Wednesday's Tip Sheet
            December 7, 2016

Since Monday night, underdogs have fared well in the NBA by covering in 10 of 17 games, including a 3-2-1 ATS mark on Tuesday. A pair of short ‘dogs won outright as Orlando was victorious at Washington, while New York rallied to top Miami. The Spurs improved to 13-0 on the road by knocking off the Timberwolves, as two of San Antonio’s main rivals in the Western Conference meet for a crucial battle tonight.

            Game of the Night – Warriors (-4 ½, 224 ½) at Clippers – 10:35 PM EST – ESPN

Over the last two runs to the NBA Finals, Golden State never had to face Los Angeles in the playoffs as there is hope that these two division rivals will hook up in the 2017 postseason. The Warriors (18-3 SU, 10-10-1 ATS) have won nine of 10 games away from Oracle Arena this season as they embark on a five-game road trip that continues to Utah on Thursday. Golden State closed out a five-game homestand at 4-1 SU and 2-3 ATS, while Klay Thompson dropped a career-high 60 points in Monday’s 142-106 blowout of Indiana as 15-point favorites.

The Clippers (16-6 SU, 12-10 ATS) suffered the obvious letdown following a six-game road trip in Sunday’s 111-102 setback to the Pacers as 11 ½-point home favorites. From November 4 through November 23, Los Angeles put together an incredible 11-1 run, but Doc Rivers’ club has dropped four of its past six contests. The Clippers lost three times as a double-digit favorite, including a shocking loss at Brooklyn on November 29. However, Los Angeles routed Cleveland last Thursday to improve to 2-0 SU/ATS as an underdog this season.

The Warriors owned the Clippers last season by winning all four matchups, including erasing a 23-point deficit in a 124-117 victory at Staples Center last November as 5 ½-point favorites. Since the Clippers knocked the Warriors out of the 2014 playoffs, Golden State has captured seven of the last eight meetings with Los Angeles, including a 3-1 mark in Los Angeles.

            Quick Revenge

The Pistons and Hornets are meeting for the second time in eight days as Detroit routed Charlotte on November 29 by a 112-89 count as 3 ½-point underdogs. The Pistons go for their fourth consecutive road victory, while knocking off the Bulls at home last night as 5 ½-point favorites, 102-91. Charlotte remains atop the Southeast division in spite of losing six of its past 10 games, while failing to cover in its last five opportunities as a home favorite.

            Hot in Houston

The Rockets have heated up recently by winning eight of their last 10 contests, including holding off the Celtics on Monday, 107-106. Houston failed to cover as 5 ½-point favorites, but the Rockets own a perfect 6-0 ATS record off an ATS loss this season. The Lakers invade Toyota Center tonight as Los Angeles has dropped six of its past eight games, including four of its past five away from Staples Center. However, the Lakers go for their second victory over the Rockets this season after beating Houston on opening night, 120-114 as six-point underdogs.

            Meeting in Manhattan

Another opening night rematch takes place at Madison Square Garden as the Cavaliers and Knicks hook up. Cleveland dominated New York in the opener, 117-88 as 9 ½-point favorites to win its seventh straight over the Knicks since December 2014. The Knicks return home with no rest after rallying past the Heat on Tuesday, 114-103 to win their fourth consecutive game. New York has been money in the bank recently by posting an 8-1 ATS record the last nine trips to the court, while owning a 9-3 ATS mark at the Garden this season. LeBron James and the Cavs snapped a three-game skid in Monday’s 116-112 triumph at Toronto, but Cleveland has cashed in only one of its last five opportunities as a road favorite.

            Sun Setting?

Phoenix is a young squad that will be a threat in the Western Conference. Just not this season, as the Suns have started 6-15 and are coming off a seven-point loss at Utah on Tuesday. Phoenix returns home with no rest to host Indiana, as the Pacers are finally healthy following a rash of injuries through the first month. The Suns have cashed as a home underdog by going 4-1 ATS when receiving points in the Valley, including outright victories over Atlanta, Detroit, and Portland. The Pacers look to avenge a 116-96 home loss to the Suns last month as Paul George sat out that defeat due to injury.

            Head-to-head stats

-- The home team has won the last 10 matchups between the Celtics and Magic, who meet up in Orlando tonight. The two teams split four meetings last season, as Orlando won each home matchup in the role of an underdog.

-- Brooklyn has captured the previous five meetings with Denver, including a season sweep in 2015-16. The Nets have covered in each of these wins, including a pair of one-point triumphs last season.

-- The Heat won three of four meetings with the Hawks last season, but Atlanta grabbed the first game against Miami last month, 93-90. Miami cashed as 6 ½-point home underdogs, riding a 4-0 ATS streak in its last four games against Atlanta.

-- The Blazers and Bucks have split their season series each of the past two years with the home team winning each time. Six of the last seven meetings have finished UNDER the total, including four consecutive UNDERS when the teams hook up in Milwaukee.

-- The Kings took care of the Mavericks last season by winning three of four matchups, while covering in all four games. Last season, Sacramento snapped a 22-game losing streak in Dallas with a 104-101 victory, while the Kings are listed as a road favorite at Dallas for the first time since 2000.

                December 8, 2016

NEW YORK (AP) LeBron James scored 25 points, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love also surpassed 20, and the Cleveland Cavaliers crushed the New York Knicks 126-94 on Wednesday night.

James had nothing to say Wednesday morning about Knicks President Phil Jackson and not much more about his decision to not stay with the team in a Donald Trump-branded hotel, but he and the Cavs made a loud statement at Madison Square Garden.

It was their second straight win after a three-game skid, and they handed the Knicks their worst loss of the season. Irving led Cleveland with 28 points, and Love scored 21, 16 in the first quarter.

Brandon Jennings scored 16 points for the Knicks. He started for Derrick Rose, who missed his first game of the season with lower back pain.

It was the first meeting since James was angered when Jackson referred to his friends and business partners as a ''posse'' last month in an ESPN interview. James refused to answer questions at the Cavs' shootaround about Jackson, who watched the game from his usual seat a few rows back of center court.

New York had its four-game winning streak snapped and lost for just the third time in 10 games.

                WARRIORS 115, CLIPPERS 98

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Klay Thompson scored 24 points, Draymond Green added 22 points and the Warriors routed the Clippers for their seventh straight win over Los Angeles.

Stephen Curry had 19 points for Golden State, and Kevin Durant, who came in averaging a team-best 27 points, was held to 16 on 5-of-17 shooting.

Curry failed to make a 3-pointer for just the second time this season, going 0 of 8. The Warriors were 7 of 30 from long range.

Jamal Crawford scored 21 points for the Clippers, who have lost five of seven. Four of their seven overall losses have come at home.

                BUCKS 115, TRAIL BLAZERS 107

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo had his second triple-double of the season to lead Milwaukee past Portland.

Antetokounmpo had 15 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists for his seventh career triple-double - second-most in franchise history - and is the only NBA player averaging at least 20 points, eight rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals this season.

Jabari Parker added 27 points for Milwaukee.

Damian Lillard had 30 points, seven rebounds and six assists for Portland.

                ROCKETS 134, LAKERS 95

HOUSTON (AP) - Eric Gordon made a career-high eight 3-pointers and scored 26 points to help Houston rout Los Angeles.

James Harden added 25 points in three quarters for the Rockets. They scored a season high and extended their winning streak to a season-best four games.

Lou Williams led the Lakers with 24 points. They have lost four in a row, their longest skid of the season.

                HAWKS 103, HEAT 95

ATLANTA (AP) - Dwight Howard had 23 points and 17 rebounds, Paul Millsap added 21 points and Atlanta beat Miami to snap a seven-game losing streak.

The Hawks had lost 10 of 11 and had gone 14 days without a victory.

Tyler Johnson scored a career-high 27 points for Miami, and Goran Dragic added 21. The Heat have lost three straight.

                HORNETS 87, PISTONS 77

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Kemba Walker scored 14 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter, and Nic Batum had 14 points and 14 rebounds for Charlotte.

The Hornets won for the third time in four games despite being held to 38 points in the first half on 27 percent shooting. Marvin Williams returned to Charlotte's starting lineup after missing the last six games with a hyperextended knee. He had 12 points and five rebounds.

Andre Drummond had 26 points and 20 rebounds for the Pistons.

                NETS 116, NUGGETS 111

NEW YORK (AP) - Brook Lopez scored 24 points, Sean Kilpatrick had 22 and Brooklyn held off Denver.

Brooklyn led by as many as 29 points midway through the third quarter, but Denver closed to 103-99 on Kenneth Faried's layup with 4:31 left. Bojan Bogdanovic and Kilpatrick each made two foul shots in the final 13 seconds to help secure the win for the Nets.

Wilson Chandler led the Nuggets with 27 points and 15 rebounds.

                CELTICS 117, MAGIC 87

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Avery Bradley scored 23 points to help Boston rout Orlando.

Terry Rozier added 16 points, Jae Crowder had 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Amir Johnson, Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart each had 13 points. D.J. Augustin scored 15 points for Orlando.

                PACERS 109, SUNS 94

PHOENIX (AP) - Paul George had 25 points and 13 rebounds and Indiana pulled away to beat Phoenix.

Myles Turner added 20 points, and Jeff Teague had 19 points and 11 assists. Indiana had a 9-0 run midway through the fourth quarter to open a 97-87 lead.

Eric Bledsoe led Phoenix with 15 points. The Suns shot 40 percent from the field and made only 9 of 33 3-pointers. They have lost five of six.

                KINGS 120, MAVERICKS 89

DALLAS (AP) - DeMarcus Cousins had 24 points and 14 rebounds, and Sacramento snapped a three-game losing streak with a victory over last-place Dallas.

Rudy Gay added 19 for the Kings. Deron Williams led Dallas with 20 points.

                • Thursday’s six-pack

                  — Ian Desmond signs with Colorado for five years, $70M; he is expected to play 1B, unless the Rockies trade one of their OFs.

                  — White Sox traded Adam Eaton to Washington; they got four prospects in return. Eaton is overvalued by the sabermetric guys.

                  — Colorado 68, Xavier 66— Important win for the Pac-12.

                  — Grand Canyon 76, San Diego State 72— Very bad loss for the Mountain West.

                  — Aroldis Chapman gets $86M for five years to be the closer in the Bronx.

                  — Cubs replace Chapman by trading Jorge Soler to the Royals for Wade Davis.

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud

                  13) Used to be I bought the NBA League Pass in part just to watch the Warriors play; their games were so much fun and Golden State has long played a wide-open, entertaining style.

Now that Kevin Durant stuffed the ballot box in trying to win a championship ring, Golden State isn’t fun to watch anymore; they’ve already won eight games by 23+ points. Close games are fun to watch; when it is 70-43 in the second quarter, not so much.

                  12) That said, Klay Thompson scored 60 points against Indiana Monday night; he made 21 baskets. On the 21 touches where he scored those hoops, he dribbled a total of 11 times. Catch-and-shoot…..get open and drill a jumper.

Kids who are interesting in learning the right way to play should watch Thompson and Steph Curry; they are so fundamentally sound in getting open and teammates give them great passes.

                  11) It is a good week to play basketball for Duke; they played Florida in New York City Tuesday and now they’re going to Las Vegas to play UNLV Saturday. Pretty good week for a college kid.

                  10) During the Jet game Monday night, Jon Gruden seemed annoyed that Baylor’s football team doesn’t have an actual playbook; he mentioned it more than once. It is a little unusual.

Speaking of Baylor and the Jets, Bryce Petty will start the Jets’ last four games, which seems like a good idea. At least they can get an idea if he’s good enough to be their QB moving forward.

                  9) Odd Fact of the Day: Detroit Lions and Miami Dolphins both have only one home loss this season, both to the Tennessee Titans. Wouldn’t have guessed that.

                  8) This is crazy; LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda will make $5.5M over the next three years- thats almost $2M a year, and he isn’t the head coach!!!

                  7) Former Alabama QB Blake Barnett, who started the Crimson Tide’s first game this year, has transferred to Arizona State

                  6) LA Clippers played 21 games in the first 36 days of the season; this week was the first time since October they two off days in a row.

                  5) Before the Lions won in New Orleans Sunday, they had lost 22 road games in row the week after Thanksgiving. Figuring Detroit usually has three extra days to prepare after playing on Thanksgiving Day, losing 22 games in a row is pretty dismal, even if they were all road games.

                  4) Over their last eight games, Jacksonville Jaguars are -16 (2-18) in turnovers.

                  3) Indiana State 72, Butler 71— Sycamore fans stormed the court after this upset, which happened on Larry Bird’s 60th birthday.

                  2) Supposedly, Sylvester Stallone wrote the original Rocky screenplay in 3.5 days.

1— I mentioned this a few weeks ago, but only in passing; here are the Jets’ last five coaches, with their record in their first season, and then their record the rest of their time with the Jets:

Al Groh: 9-7, left after one year
                  Herm Edwards: 10-6, 29-35
                  Eric Mangini: 10-6, 13-19
                  Rex Ryan: 9-7, 37-43
                  Todd Bowles: 10-6, 3-9

I can’t think of a reason why this is, except that there is incredible negativity involved in the New York press when it comes to the Jets, and it spreads to the fans. Once things start to go bad, it gets worse quickly.
