  • Final Four Opening Line Report: Books weigh in on NCAA Tournament semifinals

Since the NCAA Tournament’s round of 64 began March 17, we’ve seen a flurry of 60 games in 11 days while watching the field whittled down to the Final Four. Now, there’s only one No. 1 seed standing, along with a pair of No. 2s and a stunning No. 10.

No. 10 Syracuse vs. No. 1 North Carolina (-9.5)

Syracuse is the odd man in and will face No. 1 North Carolina on one side of the bracket in next Saturday’s Final Four in Houston.

The Orange rallied from a 15-point second-half deficit against No. 1 Virginia to post a shocking 68-62 victory as an 8-point underdog in Sunday’s Midwest Region final. Trailing 54-39, the Orange (23-13 SU, 20-15 ATS) outscored the Cavaliers 29-8 over the final 9½ minutes.

Syracuse is the first No. 10 seed to reach the Final Four, and the Orange will be prohibitive underdogs to the Tar Heels, who opened as 9.5-point favorites.

North Carolina pulled away from No. 6 Notre Dame 88-74 as a 9.5-point chalk in Sunday’s East Region final. It was the ninth consecutive SU win for the Tar Heels (32-6 SU, 19-18-1 ATS), who are also on a 7-1 spread-covering streak.

Jay Kornegay, executive vice president for race and sports at the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook, told Covers that there wasn’t much debate on the opening line.

“We had a 9, a 10, a 9.5, so we were all really close. It wasn’t a long discussion,” Kornegay said. “I’m sure the public will be on the favorite. The guessing game is where the big money will come in at. The numbers are so good that you don’t see the big money sometimes.”

It’s a rare instance that an NCAA semifinal has a spread approaching double digits.

“It’s a pretty big number for a Final Four game, so I’d suspect we’ll see a little Syracuse money,” Kornegay said. “We think 9.5 is a good number for the sharps. If the public drives it up to double digits, it wouldn’t surprise me to see a bigger play on the underdog.”

The Golden Nugget didn’t post a number on Sunday night, but oddsmaker Aaron Kessler was a little surprised the early line wasn’t a little higher.

“Notre Dame is no worse than Syracuse, and North Carolina has been nothing but impressive at every stop,” Kessler said. “We’ll probably be on the high side of that number. I’ve got to anticipate a lot of public money on Carolina in this one.”

Kessler said he sees a lot of similarities between Notre Dame and Syracuse – which bodes well for the Tar Heels.

“It’s a good matchup for them, kind of like the Notre Dame game,” he said. “North Carolina is the bigger, stronger team, by a lot. Carolina’s just got great athletes at every position.”

John Lester, senior lines manager for Bookmaker.ag, shared concerns about the hefty underdog.

“I'm not sure how we're going to attract Syracuse money on this game,” Lester said. “The line will be inflated, and we'll still be heavily one-sided on North Carolina. The Tar Heels are as complete a team as we've seen in a while, and they can simply turn it on when needed, which you can't say about many NCAA teams in history. However, the Orange have been defying odds since the outset of the tourney. So why not one more time?”

No. 2 Villanova (-2) vs. No. 2 Oklahoma

Villanova advanced with a 64-59 victory as a 2-point underdog against overall No. 1 seed Kansas in the South Region final Saturday. Oklahoma was a 1-point pup in Saturday’s West Region final against Oregon, but rolled to an 80-68 victory.

The ‘Cats (33-5 SU) are barely above water against the oddsmakers, at 19-17 ATS this season, though the Sooners (29-7 SU) are just 14-20 ATS, which rates 317th in the nation. However, this game is a rematch of a Dec. 7 regular-season meeting on a neutral floor in Hawaii, where the Sooners, catching 5 points, boat raced the Wildcats 78-55.

Kessler was a bit surprised with where the line sits at this point.

“Oklahoma has been a very public team this year, so I think Villanova’s upset of Kansas has already come into play,” Kessler said. “I tend to think the line might come down a little bit. I’m not sure we’ll see a flip, but I think it will go lower before it goes higher. If it goes up to 3, I’ll probably be in line!”

To Kessler’s point, the line actually did drop at Bookmaker.ag – but then it rebounded all the way to 2.5.

“Most of the action in the first half hour was on Oklahoma, but when we dropped Villanova from -1.5 to -1, we saw an influx of money on the favorite,” Lester said. “Some of the sharps were just waiting to see where the opener went, and once it was basically a pick 'em, they pounced on the Wildcats. We quickly moved to -2 and then -2.5.”

The matchup of No. 2 seeds is the more interesting one, according to Kornegay, who said the Superbook opened at Villanova -1.5 but has since moved to 2.

“I expect this one to be pretty solid, and the more popular game to wager on,” he said. “This is a more intriguing matchup. There’ll be support for both teams here.”

        March 29, 2016

        **Brigham Young vs. Valparaiso**

-- The Westgate SuperBook opened this NIT semifinals showdown at Madison Square Garden as a pick ‘em with a total of 146. As of early this morning, however, the Crusaders were listed as two-point favorites with a total of 146.5 points. The Cougars were +115 on the money line (risk $100 to win $115), leaving Valpo at -135.

-- Valparaiso (29-6 straight up, 17-14-1 against the spread) advanced to New York City by capturing a trio of home wins over Texas Southern (84-73), FSU (81-69) and Saint Mary’s (60-44). The Crusaders took the cash in the wins over the Seminoles and Gaels as 4.5 and 3.5-point home ‘chalk.’ In the win over Saint Mary’s, Valpo limited the Gaels to only 13 second-half points. Valpo won the battle on the boards by a 36-27 margin. Alec Peters scored 20 points, pulled down eight rebounds and dished out five assists without a committing a turnover. Keith Carter contributed 11 points, while Vashil Fernandez produced nine points, seven rebounds and six blocked shots.

        -- Bryce Drew’s team owns a 6-9 spread record in 15 games as a single-digit favorite.

-- Valpo played seven games against teams in the NCAA Tournament field, going 4-3 both SU and ATS. The Crusaders smashed Iona 83-58 as 7.5-point home favorites and also won 63-57 at Oregon St. as one-point puppies. They lost 73-67 but covered as 6.5-point ‘dogs at Oregon, which eventually was a No. 1 seed and advanced to the Elite Eight.

-- Peters averages 18.5 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. The 6’9” junior forwards is shooting 51.1 percent from the field, 44.8 percent from downtown and 85.2 percent from the free-throw line. Carter (10.3 PPG) is the only other double-digit scorer, while Fernandez pulls down 7.4 RPG and 3.3 blocked shots per contest.

-- BYU (26-10 SU, 18-14 ATS) made its way to the Big Apple by winning three consecutive home games over UAB (97-79), Virginia Tech (80-77) and Creighton (88-82). The Cougars went 2-1 ATS with their only non-cover coming against the Hokies as eight-point home ‘chalk.’ Zac Seljaas buried 5-of-6 shots, all from 3-point land, en route to scoring 19 points and grabbing seven rebounds in the quarterfinals win over the Bluejays. Nick Emery added 17 points, seven boards and five assists. Star Kyle Collinsworth was limited to 20 minutes of playing time, but the senior forward still managed 10 points, five boards and four assists. Kyle Davis (18) and Chase Fischer (15) were also in double figures.

-- Collinsworth has destroyed the NCAA’s career record for triple-doubles by producing 12, including one in the win over UAB on March 16. He averages 15.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 1.9 steals per game.

-- Fischer (18.2 PPG) is BYU’s leading scorer, hitting 36.8 percent of his treys. Emery, an explosive freshman guard, averages 16.2 PPG and has a 90/51 assists-to-turnovers ratio. Emery is second on the Cougars in steals (48).

-- BYU has been an underdog five times, posting a 2-3 spread record with one outright win at Gonzaga.

-- Dave Rose’s squad hasn’t lost to a team not named Gonzaga since falling to Pacific 77-72 as a 17-point home favorite on Feb. 6.

-- Rose’s team always plays at a frenetic pace, evidenced by its 84.0 PPG average that ranks sixth in the country.

-- Totals have been an overall wash (16-16) for the Crusaders, but they have watched ‘over’ go 6-2 in their last eight games.

-- The ‘over’ is 18-15 overall for the Cougars, 3-1 in their last four outings.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

**San Diego State vs. George Washington**

-- The Westgate opened San Diego State (28-9 SU, 17-13 ATS) as a three-point favorite with a total of 130.5 points. As of early this morning, the line remained at three with total down to 129. The Aztecs are -165 on the money line, while gamblers can take the Colonials at +145 to win outright (risk $100 to win $145). San Diego St. was favored by 1.5 points for first-half wagers.

-- Steve Fisher’s squad found its way to MSG in NYC with three consecutive home wins (SU and ATS) over IPFW (79-55), Washington (93-78) and Georgia Tech (72-56). San Diego State pulled away late in the second half to dispose of the Yellow Jackets as a five-point home favorite. Trey Kell scored a team-best 18 points thanks to 4-of-5 shooting from 3-point range. Winston Shepard added 12 points, five rebounds and two assists without a turnover, while Malik Pope posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

-- San Diego State owns an 11-6-1 spread record in 18 games as a single-digit favorite this year.

-- Shepard (11.4 PPG) averages team-highs in assists (3.1 APG) and rebounds (6.5 RPG). Kell is averaging a team-high 12.7 PPG.

-- San Diego State has one of the nation’s top defensive teams, ranking tops in field-goal percentage defense (37.1%). The Aztecs are third in the country in scoring defense (60.5 PPG) and is fifth in defending the three-point line (29.8%).

-- George Washington (26-10 SU, 16-16 ATS) beat Florida 82-77 as a 1.5-point home favorite in the quarterfinals. Tyler Cavanaugh drained 4-of-5 from long distance and scored a game-high 23 points for the winners. Kevin Larsen finished with 19 points, 13 rebounds and three assists. Patricio Garino had 13 points and eight boards.

-- Two nights before knocking off the Gators, GW collected an 87-71 win at Monmouth as a two-point road underdog. Cavanaugh was the catalyst with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Larsen added 19 points, five boards and five assists without a turnover. Garino finished with 19 points and six rebounds, while Joe McDonald had 16 points and seven boards.

-- GW’s toughest NIT game actually came in the opener when it slipped past Hofstra, 82-80.

-- George Washington went 4-4 ATS with three outright wins over teams in the NCAA field. The victims included Virginia, VCU and Seton Hall.

-- The ‘over’ is 18-15 for the Colonials after hitting in their last six straight games. This is the second-lowest total they have had seen this year. The previous low was 125 in a 73-68 win over Virginia as a 6.5-opint home underdogs that saw the 141 combined points go ‘over’ the tally.

-- The ‘under’ is 17-16 overall for the Aztecs, but they have watched the ‘over’ go 8-4 in their last 12 games.

-- This game will tip 30 minutes after the conclusion of BYU-Valpo.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Happy Hump Day, everyone.......

Today, a quick comment/thought on every National League team, with baseball season starting up in a few days.......

Arizona-- Spent ten of $$$ in off-season, adding Zach Greinke, are winning awful lot of spring training games, which means bupkus. We'll see starting Monday. Jean Segura looked like Ty Cobb this spring, after hitting .257 in Milwaukee LY.

Atlanta-- Last year at Turner Field, open fancy new stadium in Cobb County in 2017, are building a team that will be strong when they get there. Of their 30 top prospects in minor leagues, they've traded for 15 of them, by far most in majors.

Cubs-- Made playoffs last year, now expectations are off the charts; having a mime lead stretching exercises and doing fun things to break up the monotony of a long year might get old if Cubs struggle early on. They're favored to win World Series.

Reds-- In serious rebuild mold; Reds' TV guys are complaining that Joey Votto might walk 200 times, with Todd Frazier gone. If so, why not just bat him leadoff? If your Opening Day starter is Raisel Iglesias, no disrespect, but.....that not good.

Rockies-- Last five years, are combined 120 games under .500. Traded Tulowitzki for a SS who makes as much money and is now suspended for domestic violence-- what sense did that make? Top pitching prospect Gray may start season on the DL.

Dodgers-- New manager in Dave Roberts; plenty of injuries on pitching staff. Still amuses me that LA has a huge payroll, but justin Turner bats third, a guy the Mets just didn't want. How good is Japanese pitching import Maeda?

Marlins-- Mattingly is new manager, Barry Bonds is hitting coach, but they won't be playing. Need to keep Stanton/Fernandez healthy. Moved some of fences in, lowered others, which was overdue. Have only made playoffs twice, but won WS both times.

Brewers-- New GM looks like he is 15; another rebuilding team, despite being over .500 three of last five years. Will they trade Lucroy/Braun to fortify their farm system as they rebuild for the future?

Mets-- Defending NL champs have new DP combo, same fine rotation. Curious to see if Washington can challenge them, since rest of division looks lame. David Wright got late start to spring; who plays 3B if his back flares up again?

Phillies-- Maikel Franco has eight homers this spring, most in majors. Still saddled with Ryan Howard's ludicrous contract- he hit .229 LY and he can't defend. Phillies' second run next week will be the 90,000th run in franchise history.

Pirates-- Clint Hurdle managed in playoffs in four of his last eight years as a manager, while with Rockies/Pirates- why did Colorado let him go? Can Pirates get another .370 OB% out of catcher Cervelli? Josh Harrison replaces traded Walker at 2B.

Cardinals-- Have been in playoffs last five years and 12 of last 16. When do they get Yadier Molina back to full strength? Is Ruben Tejada good enough to man SS until Peralta gets back after All-Star break? Mike Leake should help the rotation.

Padres-- Ross-Shields-Cashner is really strong top 3 of rotation. Will Alexei Ramirez be solid at SS? They've also moved some of fences in. Padres are hoping Myers can be solid at 1B and that Jon Jay can anchor the outfield in CF.

Giants-- Its an even-numbered year, so.....Bumgarner is only starting pitcher who is under 30- they added Cueto/Samardzija, but Samardzija was awful LY with White Sox. Hopefully people realize what a great manager Bruce Bochy is.

Nationals-- Dusty Baker is the new skipper, after team went 83-79 and missed the playoffs for second time in last four years. It is a contract year for Strasburg, so if he has a big year, scumweasel agent Scott Boras will ask for the moon next winter.

                        • NIT Championship
                          March 31, 2016

Valparaiso and George Washington didn’t hear their respective names called on Selection Sunday, but they’ve looked the part of NCAA Tournament teams in making it to Thursday’s NIT finals at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The Westgate SuperBook opened Valparaiso (30-6 straight up, 17-15-1 against the spread) as a one-point favorite with a total of 133 points. As of late Wednesday night, most spots had the Crusaders favored by two with the total remaining at 133. They are -135 on the money line, while the Colonials are +115 on the comeback (risk $100 to win $115).

Valpo dominated its first three games at home, but it needed a blocked shot at the buzzer to hold off BYU 72-70 in Tuesday’s semifinals. The Cougars came up short, but they cashed tickets in backdoor fashion as three-point underdogs.

Valpo led by as many as 16 points in the second half but disappointed its backers in the end. The 142 combined points dipped ‘under’ the 149-point total after looking on pace in the early going.

Bryce Drew’s team raced out to a 44-30 advantage at intermission. However, BYU stormed back and took its first lead of the game with 4:26 left to play.

BYU Chase Fischer scored a bucket to cut the deficit to 71-70 with seven seconds remaining. After being fouled, Valpo’s Shane Hammink made only one of two free throws, but he swatted away a long 3-point attempt at the horn. The miss from the charity stripe proved costly for gamblers backing the Horizon League regular-season champs, however.

Alec Peters led the Crusaders with 15 points, nine rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals. David Skara drained 3-of-5 attempt form long distance and finished with 15 points, and six rebounds. Keith Carter contributed 13 points, five boards, four assists and two steals, while Hammink tallied 10 points, five assists, three steals, three boards and five blocked shots.

Valpo has the nation’s premier shot blocker in senior center Vashil Fernandez, who averages 3.3 blocked shots per game. Fernandez had three rejections against BYU. The 6’10 big man from Kingston, Jamaica, averages 5.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.

Peters averages team-bests in scoring (18.4 points per game), rebounding (8.4 RPG) and field-goal percentage (50.7%). Carter (10.3 PPG) averages team-highs in assists (4.4 APG) and steals (1.6 SPG).

Valpo has been a single-digit favorite 16 times this season, limping to a 6-10 spread record. The Crusaders are currently in a 4-9 ATS slump in their last 13 games (regardless of the fave/’dog situation).

George Washington (27-10 SU, 17-16-1 ATS) advanced to the finals by virtue of Tuesday’s 65-46 win over San Diego St. as a three-point underdog. The 111 combined points fell ‘under’ the 132.5-point total.

Tyler Cavanaugh paced the winners with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Patricio Garino added 13 points and five rebounds.

GW played stifling defense, limiting the Aztecs to 17-of-59 shooting (28.8%) from the field and 3-of-22 from 3-point land (13.6%).

Mike Lonergan’s team found its way to MSG in NYC with wins over Hofstra, Monmouth and Florida. The Colonials edged Hofstra by an 82-80 count in the opening round, but they failed to cover the number as six-point home ‘chalk.’

Cavanaugh was the catalyst with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Garino added 18 points, while Kevin Larsen produced 16 points, seven boards, seven assists and four steals.

GW went on the road in Round 2 to beat Monmouth 87-71 as a two-point underdog. Cavanaugh dropped 22 points and 12 rebounds on the Hawks, while Larsen finished with 19 points, five boards and five assists without a turnover. Garino had 19 points and six rebounds, while Joe McDonald contributed 16 points and seven boards.

GW won an 82-77 decision over Florida in the NIT quarterfinals, hooking up its backers as a two-point home ‘chalk.’ Cavanaugh buried 4-of-5 launches from 3-point range and scored a game-high 23 points. Larsen finished with 19 points, 13 rebounds and three assists, while Garino had 13 points and eight boards.

GW has been an underdog 11 times this year, going 6-5 ATS with five outright wins. The Colonials beat Virginia and Seton Hall at home, while also winning outright at VCU.

The ‘over’ had hit in six straight games for GW until the ‘under’ prevailed in the win over the Aztecs. The Colonials have watched the ‘over’ go 18-16 overall.

The ‘under’ is 17-16 overall for Valpo after cashing in back-to-back contests.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

                          **B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- The beauty of the NCAA Tournament is the thrill of victory. On the flip side, there’s always the agony of defeat. Senior players who have poured their hearts and souls into a collegiate career see it crashing down, sometimes with one shot, other times with 40 forgetful minutes of basketball. Here’s a ranking of the most gut-wrenching defeats of the 2016 Tournament, losses that’ll never leave those that invested so much, only to see it end in heartbreaking fashion:

1-No. Iowa vs. Texas A&M – The Panthers blew a 12-point lead in the final 44 seconds, then lost to the Aggies in double overtime. They turned the ball over four times, while A&M hit six straight shots at the end of regulation.

2-Texas vs. No. Iowa – You simply aren’t supposed to lose in the NCAA Tournament on a half-court shot off the backboard at the buzzer. It just ain’t right, but that was the fate dealt to the Longhorns.

3-Virginia vs. Syracuse – This just in: Jim Boeheim can coach. The ‘Cuse was a bubble team that’s in the Final Four, but only after rallying from a 16-point second-half deficit. This one will sting in Charlottesville for decades.

4-Stephen F. Austin vs. Notre Dame – Rex Pflueger tipped in the winning bucket for the Fighting Irish with 1.5 seconds remaining. This was one of the best games of the entire Tournament, with neither team leading by more than seven at any point. Thomas Walkup’s brilliant collegiate career came to an end after he led the Lumberjacks to a never-a-doubt win over West Virginia in the Round of 64. Walkup had given SFA a five-point lead with a pair of free throws at the 2:05 mark against Notre Dame.

5-Wisconsin vs. Xavier – The Musketeers led by nine with 6:19 remaining, but Wisconsin’s Bronson Koenig refused to lose on this night. Keoenig hit a pair of 3-balls in the last 11.7 seconds, including a fading-out-of-bounds 22-footer from the corner at the buzzer.

6-Syracuse vs. Gonzaga – I hate saying this because refs have an extremely difficult job. I really hate saying it when it’s reality, but the officiating in this Tournament has been a joke (think of Ben Bentil’s phantom fourth foul against North Carolina or the foul on Kansas in a loose-ball scramble at crunch time). Gonzaga should’ve been on the free-throw line down one with Josh Perkins shooting two with a couple of seconds remaining. Perkins was hammered inside but didn’t get the whistle. Gonzaga blew a nine-point cushion with 6:30 left.

-- Lon Kruger owns a 20-16 career record in the NCAA Tournament. He has taken five schools to the Sweet 16 and the Oklahoma coach is headed back to the national semifinals for the first time since he guided Florida to Charlotte in 1994 for the school’s first Final Four appearance in program history.

-- Syracuse and North Carolina faced each other in the 1987 East Region finals at the Meadowlands. Rony Seikaly had dominated the late Dwayne Schintzius, then a lanky true freshman, to lead the ‘Cuse to a Sweet 16 win over Florida and the M&M Boys (Andrew Moten and Vernon Maxwell) in come-from-behind fashion. J.R. Reid had led UNC past David Rivers and Notre Dame in the East semifinals to set up the meeting with the Orangemen, their mascot name back then. Seikaly and Sherman Douglas led Boeheim’s bunch to the win over UNC and a trip to New Orleans, where Keith Smart and Indiana would prevail over the ‘Cuse on Smart’s baseline jumper in the closing seconds. That IU team gave Bobby Knight his third and final national title during Steve Alford’s senior campaign. That Syracuse team had a lanky freshman, too. His name was Derrick Coleman, who isn’t very skinny these days. Coleman came out of nowhere to block a Moten shot when UF led Syracuse by five in the final six minutes. Coleman subsequently threw down court to Greg Monroe, who scored a three-point play the hard way when Maxwell fouled him. The sequence completely turned the game and prevented the Gators from advancing in their first-ever trip to the Big Dance. Who did IU beat in the Final Four that year? That would be Rick Pitino’s Providence team led by a senior guard named Billy Donovan, who would eventually get Florida to four Final Fours as its head coach, including a pair of natties in ’06 and ’07. Anyway, Syracuse and UNC meet again Saturday. The Tar Heels are favored by 9.5 points.

GEORGE WASHINGTON COLONIALS (27-10) vs. VALPARAISO CRUSADERS (30-6)

                            NIT Championship Game
Madison Square Garden – New York, NY
                            Tip-off: Thursday, 7:00 pm ET
                            Sportsbook.ag Line: Valparaiso -2.0, 133

George Washington and Valparaiso will both be looking to cap off magnificent seasons when the teams meet in the NIT Championship on Thursday.

George Washington has had a very impressive tournament, as the team has now knocked off Monmouth, Florida and San Diego State on its way to this game. The Colonials were three-point underdogs against the Aztecs on Tuesday and won that game 65-46. San Diego State shot just 28.8% from the floor in that game and that is the third time in a row that George Washington has held its opponent to less than 45% shooting.

Valparaiso, meanwhile, defeated BYU 72-70 as a two-point favorite on Tuesday. The Crusaders were fresh off of a 60-44 victory over St. Mary’s and this team will be feeling really good coming into this one. One trend worth keeping an eye on in this one is that Valparaiso is an impressive 10-2 ATS when playing with one or less days rest on the season.

The Colonials have really been playing some very good basketball in this tournament and one guy that will need to stay hot for the team is F Tyler Cavanaugh (16.9 PPG, 7.6 RPG). Cavanaugh is averaging 21.3 PPG and 9.8 RPG in the tournament and he has also gone 10-for-18 from the outside as well. His ability to stretch the floor is huge for George Washington and he’ll need to have his stroke on Thursday.

Another guy that will need to come up big for the Colonials is F Kevin Larsen (12.1 PPG, 8.4 RPG). Larsen is yet another big man that is capable of shooting from the outside, but he will mostly be relied on to score around the basket in this game. He struggled a bit against San Diego State, finishing with just seven points in 29 minutes of action. Larsen should, however, find some success against Valparaiso on Thursday. It’s just important that he finds other ways to impact the game if his shot isn’t falling.

In the backcourt, G Patricio Garino (14.1 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 1.4 SPG) will need to be on his game in this one. Garino has had a magnificent tournament, averaging 15.8 PPG through the first four games. He relentlessly attacks the rim and is also a very good shooter from the outside, as he has hit 42.7% of his threes coming into this one. If he is on Thursday then it’d be tough for Valparaiso to deal with both him and Cavanaugh.

Valparaiso felt like it was snubbed from the NCAA tournament, but the only way that the team can even continue to make that claim is by winning the NIT. If the Crusaders are going to win on Thursday then they will need some huge performances from G Keith Carter (10.3 PPG, 4.4 APG, 1.6 SPG), F Alec Peters (18.4 PPG, 8.4 RPG) and C Vashil Fernandez (5.6 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 3.3 BPG). Carter and Peters are the guys that Valparaiso will be counting on offensively. Carter controls the offense and also happens to be a 39.1% shooter from the outside. He’ll need to find his teammates in the right spots and also knock down some of his looks from three on Thursday.

Peters, meanwhile, is one of the best scorers in the country. He is capable of scoring from anywhere on the floor and is dangerous from three, as he is a 44.5% shooter from behind the arc. The Crusaders will need him to match the production of Cavanaugh in this game. Defensively, Fernandez is the guy the Crusaders will be leaning on. He is one of the best shot-blockers in the nation and if he can avoid foul trouble then he will make things very difficult on the Colonials in this one.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud......

                              13) NBA coaches make a lot of money; but when you read about D'Angelo Russell secretly taping a conversation with a teammate, where the teammate admits cheating on his girlfriend, and then the tape goes public, you realize that some of these teams are traveling circuses where 19-year old millionaires can blow the whole team up.

                              12) Some football people tweeted Wednesday, ".....he (Russell) is lucky he isn't on a football team, or else........"; well if he played football, he'd still be in college, since football players can't bolt for the NFL until they have three years in college. Growing up emotionally is a big part of why staying in college is often a good idea.

                              11) If you're the Lakers, don't you have to trade Russell? He has a lot of talent, but it'll take a lot to rebuild trust between his teammates and himself. Dicey situation.

                              10) Apple and Major League Baseball signed a multi-year deal to equip teams with stats, matchups, video stuff in the dugout area. Baseball is a game of numbers, so much so that you can drown in them- different teams use them different ways.

                              9) Cubs averaged 15,000+ fans for their spring training home games this month.

                              8) Oakland Grizzlies started five lefties in a game this week; don't see that a lot.

                              7) Oakland sharpshooter Max Hooper (he hasn't taken a 2-point shot all year), lost his dad last month. Chip Hooper was once manager of the Dave Matthews Band- his loss has been felt both in the Oakland community and in the music world.

                              6) Billy Donovan's first head coaching job was at Marshall in 1994, but before he took the job, Mike Brey (then a Duke assistant) turned it down. Brey became coach at Delaware the next year. Both guys have obviously had great careers.

                              5) Coaching carousel: Travis Ford to Saint Louis, Kyle Smith from Columbia to San Francisco, Zach Spiker from Army to Drexel.

Random fact: Travis Ford appeared in the movie The Sixth Man, playing role of Danny O'Grady. Ford coached at UMass, Eastern Kentucky before Oklahoma State.

                              4) Nevada 77, Morehead State 68-- Wolf Pack outscored Morehead 27-13 on the foul line, reversing Game 1 results; Eagles were 1-18 on arc in a physical game that saw tempers flare couple times. Decisive Game 3 of series is Friday night in Reno.

                              3) Old Dominion 68, Oakland 67-- Monarchs had 16 offensive rebounds, were +16 on boards as they won first Vegas 16 tournament, an event with only eight teams in it. Oakland allowed the CBS TV crew incredible access; the sideline reporter sat next to coach Greg Kampe and talked to him for a couple possessions each game, while the game was being played.

                              2) Good news for Jose Reyes and much more importantly, my fantasy baseball team; domestic violence charges against Reyes will be dropped- his wife won't cooperate with authorities. Reyes makes $22M a year, so the couple stood to lose a fortune if the trial went on as scheduled (Monday), but he isn't totally off the hook yet.

Unfortunately, Reyes might still be suspended by MLB, which suspended Aroldis Chapman 30 games, but then declined to suspend Yasiel Puig for domestic violence incidents. In the meantime, the shortstop for the Armadillos will be Marcus Semien, who hopefully won't get arrested before the season starts.

                              1) NFL linebacker Sean Weatherspoon was moving last week; during the move, his fiancee found an uncashed game check from last year, worth $138,235. Must be nice that you don't cash all your paychecks and don't notice the difference.
