  • Preview: Badgers (22-12) at Fighting Irish (23-11)
    Date: March 25, 2016 7:27 PM EDT

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Let some of the other top seeds lose and blow up NCAA Tournament brackets.

A safer wager these days is betting all the cheese curds on Wisconsin to make a deep run in March.

The Badgers (22-12) are as much a staple of the tournament this time of year - and that first weekend in April - as any traditional blue blood program. Wisconsin is two wins away in the East Regional from becoming the first program since UCLA (2006-2008) to make three straight Final Fours.

The magnitude of such a feat hasn't been lost on the seventh-seeded Badgers.

'We didn't have anybody in our locker room that had gone through ups and downs,' coach Greg Gard said. 'You were 66-12 in the last two years. Two Final Fours, 66-12. That's not the normal college basketball athlete's experience. They'll usually have to go through some form of adversity.'

Notre Dame (23-11) is standing in Wisconsin's way and ready to throw some adversity at the Badgers at Philadelphia's Wells Fargo Center on Friday night.

The football school found some of its hoops mojo last season when it at last reached the Elite Eight under coach Mike Brey.

The sixth-seeded Irish enjoyed playing a spot in the Final Four so much, they are back again, trying to take the next step.

Expect a close one: Notre Dame won its first two tourney games by seven points and one point and Wisconsin has wins by four and three points.

The Irish are riding guard Demetrius Jackson (15.5 ppg; 18 in NCAA win vs. Stephen F. Austin) and forward Zach Auguste (double-doubles in both NCAA games) as they chase six tournament wins over a two-season span for the first time in program history.

Auguste said the Irish boast 'one of the most efficient offenses in the country.' Jackson said that efficient offense starts with Auguste.

'We're going to throw the ball into Zach a bunch, give him a bunch of post feeds and let him go to work,' Jackson said.

The Badgers, though, are here on the strength of their defense: Among teams in the Sweet 16, Wisconsin's 53 ppg ranks second behind Syracuse (50.5) and the Badgers are holding teams to just 39 percent shooting from the floor. Oh, and the Badgers outrebounded two teams (Pittsburgh and Xavier) that were among the best on the boards in the regular season.

'We had 60 days ago we couldn't defend like we did last weekend,' Gard said. 'We had 60 days ago we couldn't defend like we did last weekend. So our toughness level and our commitment to the defensive end has grown exponentially in the last two, three weeks.'

Here are more things to watch in the East Regional semifinal:

    ---

HERE TO STAY: Wisconsin is 22-12 with one big L not found in the win-loss column.

'The best loss we had all year was the loss of the interim tag,' Gard said, smiling.

Gard was named interim coach in December when long-time coach Bo Ryan retired and Wisconsin gave him the job on a permanent basis earlier this month. Gard, who joined the Wisconsin staff as an assistant in 2001, was asked by a reporter if he wanted to return next season.

    Whoops.

'Did you know I signed a contract already,' Gard asked.

Gard, trying to lead Wisconsin to its third straight Final Four, hoped to stick around and keep the program rolling next season, and beyond.

'They actually gave me a five-year contract about three weeks ago. I always had a one-year contract,' he said. 'I thought, wow, I saw five years on that thing, where do I sign?'

Gard grew up in the small town of Cobb, Wisconsin, which is about an hour's drive west of the Kohl Center. Considered one of the top assistants in the game, Ryan said in his retirement announcement that he had hoped Gard would get the job.

    ---

MEMORIES: Philadelphia's Spectrum has been demolished. The image of Duke's Christian Laettner hitting 'The Shot' at the arena to eliminate Kentucky in the epic 1992 regional final remained fresh for Notre Dame coach Mike Brey.

Brey was an assistant under Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski when Laettner nailed one of the most memorable shots in NCAA Tournament history.

'A lot of memories from across the parking lot in that old Spectrum,' Brey said.

Brey became familiar with the area in five seasons coaching Delaware about an hour south of Phily in Newark and became friends with local coaches such as former Penn coach (now at Temple) Fran Dunphy and Villanova's Jay Wright.

'Dunph and Jay, they made me feel like Philly guys every now and then because I was close,' Brey said. 'The great coaches that have come out of this area, just even being in our hotel, the people working, they're hoops people. So I'm energized being back in the city, and I'm really proud that I can bring my team here.'

    ---

RECORD SETTER: Notre Dame forward Zach Auguste is shooting 71 percent (43 of 61) in seven career NCAA Tournament games. UCLA's Bill Walton holds the mark at 69 percent. The minimum to qualify for the NCAA record book is 70 attempts.

'When the lights are brightest, big-time regular season games, he has really delivered,' Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said. 'And in the ultimate big stage, this tournament, for him to be mentioned of possibly breaking Bill Walton's record, it's unbelievable.'

    • Preview: Bulldogs (28-7) at Orange (21-13)
      Date: March 25, 2016 9:40 PM EDT

CHICAGO (AP) With Kyle Wiltjer taking aim from long distance, Gonzaga has seen very little zone defense this season. 'Less than 30 possessions,' coach Mark Few estimated.

      That all changes Friday.

Gonzaga and its efficient offense take on Syracuse and its famed matchup zone when the only remaining double-digit seeds in the NCAA Tournament face off in the Midwest Regional semifinals. The Bulldogs are trying to get back to the final eight for the second straight year, while the Orange are on the brink of their first appearance in the fourth round since 2013.

Winners of seven in a row by an average of 14.7 points, Gonzaga (28-7) appears to be peaking at the right time. But no one plays defense like Syracuse (21-13) does anymore.

'It's going to be interesting just because you just - we don't, and there really aren't many teams in college basketball that play 40 minutes of zone, and I think that's kind of the simple brilliance of the whole Syracuse plan,' Few said after the 11th-seeded Bulldogs practiced at the United Center on Thursday. 'It's kind of amazing in that regard.'

It has worked for coach Jim Boeheim for decades, to the tune of five Final Fours and a national championship for Carmelo Anthony and company in 2003. But this has been one strange season for Boeheim, who was suspended for nine games as one of the outcomes of an NCAA investigation that found a history of improper benefits and academic misconduct stretching back years.

The Orange dropped five of six down the stretch, putting their spot in the tournament in jeopardy. But they slipped in as a 10 seed, and then thumped Dayton and Middle Tennessee in the first two rounds in St. Louis.

'I don't really focus too much on the off-the-court stuff because every player, every team goes through that,' Boeheim said. 'There's always stuff that you don't know about. But what happens on the court, this team has been up and down. We started out great, played great basketball and we slipped a little bit, and lost a couple tough games. Then we started to kind of get back playing well.'

Syracuse has allowed an average of 50.5 points and 30.8 percent shooting so far in the tournament, but Gonzaga has the perfect player to attack the Orange's stifling zone in Wiltjer. The 6-foot-10 senior forward is a 49-percent shooter from 3-point range and averages a team-best 20.4 points.

'We just want to continue to play our game,' Wiltjer said. 'They obviously are in zone, so for us big guys, we just have to find the seams.'

Gonzaga and Syracuse met once before, with the Orange advancing to the Sweet 16 of the 2010 tournament with an 87-65 victory in Buffalo. Here are a couple more things to know about their second game:

FRIENDLY TERMS: Boeheim and Few have become good friends over the years through their relationship with Nike and USA Basketball. And they took turns praising each other Thursday.

'He's funny, he's witty, he's a great card player, average fisherman, but there's some hope there, some promise there if we ever get him off the golf course,' Few said.

Boeheim said their friendship began with a card game that went poorly for Few.

'Obviously, he's a great, great basketball coach,' Boeheim said. 'But he's a better person.'

GOOD GBINIJE: Syracuse guard Michael Gbinije scored 23 points in the second-round victory over Middle Tennessee. The graduate student, who spent his freshman season at Duke, is averaging a team-high 17.8 points.

'I'd say he's the most improved player that I've had at Syracuse,' Boeheim said.

A RARE SHOW: It's the fourth time double-digit seeds have met in the Sweet 16 since seeding began in 1979. The other occasions were Dayton-Stanford in 2014, VCU-Florida State in 2011 and Providence-Chattanooga in 1997.

INSIDE JOB: The Bulldogs and Orange dominated the glass in the first two rounds of the tournament. Gonzaga outrebounded Seton Hall and Utah by a combined total of 82-58. Even with its zone - which can leave some openings inside - Syracuse had an 85-63 advantage in boards.

Gonzaga sophomore Domantas Sabonis, who averages 17.5 points and 11.7 rebounds, and Syracuse junior Tyler Roberson, who pulled down 18 rebounds in the first round against the Flyers, are two names to watch inside.

          Armadillo's Write-Up

          Friday, March 25

Since 1997, North Carolina is 9-1 in Sweet 16; they lost to Wisconsin in this round LY. Tar Heels are 2-0 vs Big 14 this year, beating N'western by 11, Maryland by 8. UNC scored 84 ppg LW in easy wins; they've won seven in a row overall. Indiana won 22 of last 26 games; they're 1-2 vs ACC teams, losing to Wake/Duke in fall, then beat Notre Dame by 7 in December. Hoosiers shoot 41.6% on the arc (#5); Carolina foes are shooting 35.4% (#223 defense). ACC teams are 8-11 vs Big 14 teams this season, 5-6 vs spread when favored. Last 10 years, #1 seeds are 16-19 vs spread in regional semifinal round. Battle of senior point guards should be extremely interesting.

Wisconsin allowed 53 ppg in winning twice LW; Badgers won at Syracuse, beat Pitt by 4 in only two ACC games. Notre Dame won four of last five games, sneaking by SF Austin Sunday. Irish subs play 9th-least minutes in country; PG Jackson was on bench for 2:00 LW. ND is 3-1 vs Big 14 this year, losing to Indiana, winning by 7-6-5 points vs Michigan-Illinois-Iowa. Expect a slow tempo; Notre Dame plays tempo #321, Wisconsin #345. Badgers are 13-3 in last 16 games after a 9-9 start; they don't have a senior in rotation. ACC teams are 8-11 vs Big 14 teams this season, 3-3 vs spread when a dog. This is first regional semi with 6-7 seeds playing since 2005.

Virginia won seven of last eight games, with only loss to UNC; Cavs beat West Va in only Big X game. UVa plays slowest tempo in nation. Iowa State plays #56 tempo, is #4 expereince team, but Cyclones' bench plays 5th-least minutes in country. Last 10 years, #1 seeds are 16-19 vs spread in regional semifinal round. ACC teams are 2-3 vs Big X teams this year, 1-3 vs spread when favored. Iowa State scored 172 points on 141 possessions LW; this game will be mich slower than 70 possessions. Cyclones beat Va Tech by 22 in only ACC game- they've got #5 eFG% in country, shooting 56.6% inside arc (#4), 38.6% outside arc (#22). .

Gonzaga is 7-0 since losing on Senior Night to St Mary's; they've got two quality big men, shoot ball well (#12 eFG%) and allowed only 55.5 ppg LW in beating seeds #6-3 in their region (Seton Hall/Utah). Zags are 4-5 vs top 50 teams this year. Syracuse got two wins last week after going 1-5 in previous six games; Orange avoided Michigan St in second round, which always helps. Syracuse is one of 20 worst teams in country on defensive boards, but otherwise defend well- their bench plays 2nd-least minutes in country. WCC won both its games vs ACC teams this season. This game is only third 10-11 seed game ever; underdogs won first two.

              • Saturday's Elite 8 Tips
                March 25, 2016

West Region – Anaheim, CA – Honda Center

                #1 Oregon (PK, 151) vs. #2 Oklahoma – 6:09 PM ET, CBS

The Ducks and Sooners have held up as the top seeds in the West, dominating games due to their ball movement and shot-making skills. Both are averaging over 80 points per game in this NCAA Tournament and have won comfortably, albeit a combined 3-3 against the spread. That may be one reason oddsmakers have placed pick’em status on this one, leaving it up to the betting public to decide whether they’re backing the least-respected No. 1 seed or a Buddy Hield-led squad that has been in the spotlight for the last few months. There’s no question both are playing well, but it wouldn’t necessarily be a surprise to see Oklahoma bet into a favorite position between now and tip-off.

On the floor, these are teams with similar strengths, but Oregon certainly has the size advantage. Center Chris Boucher is the nation’s second-leading shot-blocker and is a factor on the offensive end because he’s versatile enough to step out and knock down a jump shot. Dillon Brooks, who had his national coming-out party on Thursday night despite the fact he was First Team All-Pac-12, scored 25 points last round, the last three of which drew the ire of Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski. He’s incredibly mature for the college level, consistently hunting his shot but playing with a very composed demeanor. Elgin Cook, a versatile forward who scored 16 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds against the Blue Devils, can similarly beat you inside and out. 6-foot-9 sophomore Jordan Bell comes off the bench and adds even more depth.

The way Oklahoma can defeat the Ducks is to continue shooting the lights out the way they did against a Texas A&M team that typically stifles opponents but had no question for the arsenal surrounding Buddy Hield, who actually had a rough start in the round of 16, often seeing as many as three bodies around him. Hield ended up with 10 boards and 17 points, but it was Jordan Woodard who led five double-digit scorers in the win over the Aggies, scoring 22 and making five of his six 3-point shots. The Sooners shot 49.2 percent.

The Sooners shot 11-for-25 (44 pct) from beyond the arc and will undoubtedly shoot it with impunity here. Hield hit just two of his seven 3-point attempts. This is Oklahoma’s first Elite 8 appearance since 2009. Oregon, the 1939 NCAA Tournament champ (inaugural edition), hasn't been back to the Final Four since. They've won 10 consecutive games, winning the Pac-12's regular-season and tournament titles and setting a new record for single-season wins. Dana Altman is in the Elite Eight for the first time in his 26-season head coaching career. Counterpart Lon Kruger is here with his third team, having reached this stage with Kansas State and Florida. The Sooners are looking to get back to the Final Four for the first time in 14 seasons. The ‘under’ has prevailed in 11 of the last 13 Oklahoma games and has come through in Oregon’s last two games.

South Region – Louisville, KY – KFC Yum! Center

                #1 Kansas (-2.5, 145.5) vs. #2 Villanova – 8:45 PM ET, CBS

The top teams in this region have been impressive in each of their victories in this NCAA Tournament, perhaps more than any other teams in this tournament. Combined, they’re 6-0 against the number. If the Wildcats hadn’t lost in the Big East Tournament final to Seton Hall, there’s little doubt that the earliest these teams would’ve met would’ve been a national semifinal, since ‘Nova would have earned a No. 1 seed if not for stumbling. Both teams were amazing on Thursday night. Villanova forced a bunch of turnovers, but it was its offense that opened eyes, as Miami could do nothing with them in a 92-69 loss that sounds even more impressive when you consider the Hurricanes were the No. 3 seed and looked more overmatched than they were in any ACC game besides a road loss at North Carolina.

Ryan Arcidiacono and Kris Jenkins each scored 21 points and the team as a whole shot 62.7 percent from the field. The Wildcats hit 10-of-15 3-pointers and were 18-for-19 at the free-throw line. They outrebounded Miami 27-17 and consistently beat the Hurricanes to loose balls, something that Kansas head coach Bill Self will undoubtedly point out when his team views film.

Fortunately, the Jayhawks hit the boards hard and came up big against Maryland as a result, winning that battle 43-28. Landan Lucas had 11 rebounds, while Perry Ellis scored 27 points to key the frontcourt effort. Lucas has seemingly been the key for Kansas during this 17-game winning streak. He doesn’t need the ball on the offensive end and dominates on the boards and on intangibles, setting screens and making himself a factor on the defensive end.

Guard play will be pivotal here, as both teams employ a two-point guard look. Villanova’s Arcidiacono and Jalen Brunson will tangle with Kansas’ Frank Mason and Devonte Graham, so expect ball-handling and 3-point shooting to be a key factor. The Wildcats have won 15 of 17 have seen the ‘over’ come in 10 of the last 12 times. The Jayhawks are 14-3 ATS over their last 17 and have seen the ‘under’ prevail in their last two outings. Villanova has only been an underdog in one game this season, losing to Virginia.

                • TIPPING OFF: The ACC makes quite a statement in Sweet 16
                  March 26, 2016

That was quite a show by the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Now the league is set up for quite the showcase on Sunday in the Elite Eight.

There were four games in the Sweet 16 on Friday night and all of them involved one ACC team. Sure enough, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Virginia and Syracuse all prevailed.

The four victories mean it'll be an all-ACC showdown on Sunday when Notre Dame meets North Carolina and Virginia faces Syracuse. It also means the league will have two Final Four representatives in Houston and one in the championship game.

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said the ACC was certainly ''tough'' but didn't gloat about the league's dominance in the aftermath of his team's comeback win over Gonzaga.

''I learned a long time ago that it's a foolish game to say one league is better than the other,'' Boeheim said. ''There's just too many variables. I think the top conferences are very, very good, and it's an imperfect system to say, well, they did better in the NCAA Tournament.''

Here are a few more nuggets as the NCAA Tournament hits the Elite Eight round:

                  -----

PLENTY OF PERRY: Kansas fans have heard about senior Perry Ellis for a very long time.

Ellis was a Kansas high school star and coach Bill Self attended his first high school game in 2008 while laying the groundwork for his recruitment.

Now the 6-foot-8 Ellis is in the final days of an outstanding career - his 1,794 career points are 8th career at Kansas and he recently passed Paul Pierce on the scoring list. The Jayhawks face Villanova on Saturday.

Ellis has saved some his best basketball for the past month. He's scored at least 20 points in seven of his last eight games.

''Just trying to do whatever I can to win - that's all I'm trying to do,'' Ellis said.

                  -----

VILLANOVA'S SCORCHING THE NETS: It's hard to find a team as hot as Villanova right now.

The Wildcats are shooting nearly 60 percent from the field in three NCAA Tournament wins and have scored at least 86 points in all of them.

''They're probably playing as well as anybody that we've gone against in recent memory, at least that I can recall,'' Self said. ''They're on fire right now.''

                  -----

BUDDY TIME: Oklahoma's star guard Buddy Hield met Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant after Thursday's win over Texas A&M.

Now, he'd like to do his best Kobe impression when the Sooners meet Oregon on Saturday for a chance to go to the Final Four.

''He's one of my idols I grew up watching, one of the guys I looked up to,'' Hield said. ''And I try to copy and mimic his work ethic. I am just happy I got to meet Kobe and he said a couple words of encouragement.''

Hield had a down game by his lofty standards in Oklahoma's 77-63 win over Texas A&M, finishing with 17 points and 10 rebounds. The prolific shooter is averaging more than 25 points per game.

Oregon expects to get Hield's best.

''He's just a great athlete, and he can keep backing up,'' Oregon coach Dana Altman said. ''He moves so well without the ball that it's hard to keep up with him.''

                  • Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Florida football coach Jim McElwaine got a $750K raise, now makes $4.25M.

-- Oakland Raiders paid $925K in rent for the O.co Coliseum LY; they'll pay $3.5M next year. Thats what happens when you threaten to skip town.

-- Enough with The Masters commercials; they've been on since January.

-- With RGIII signing in Cleveland, looks like Denver is only team left that night trade for Colin Kaepernick.

-- Apparently the Shanahans talked to John Elway about RGIII and they weren't complimentary. Questions remain as to whether Mr Griffin can lead a team.

-- QB prospect Christian Hackenberg is blaming Penn State coach James Franklin for Hackenberg's reduced production his last two years at Penn State. While that may be true, not sure scouts like hearing a kid criticize his former coaches.

                    **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind......

                    13) Notre Dame 61, Wisconsin 56-- Irish outscored last two opponents 14-3 in last minute of the game, sneaking by SF Austin/Wisconsin. Now Notre Dame plays UNC, which beat them by 31 three weeks ago in Washington, at ACC tournament. Irish did beat Tar Heels in South Bend 80-76 during the regular season.

                    12) Syracuse 63, Gonzaga 60-- Last week was best first weekend tournament has had; Sweet 16 wasn't as good, except for this game and ND-Wisconsin. Syracuse lost at Virginia 73-65 back in January, despite Orange going 13-30 on arc; teams play again Sunday at 6:00, with a trip to the Final Four in Houston up for grabs.

                    11) Virginia 84, Iowa State 71-- Cyclone squad that was #4 in country in experience got run off floor here, now has major rebuilding job, playing in a brutal league. Virginia shot 61% inside arc; Iowa State had no depth, hard to press that way and get back in the game. Last time all four #1 seeds made it to Elite 8: 2009.

                    10) North Carolina 101, Indiana 86-- In regional finals since 2005, teams seeded #6 or lower are 11-2 vs spread-- both non-covers were favored- that trend would favor the Fighting Irish Sunday. Last team to score 100 points in Sweet 16 game was Kentucky in 2012, also against Indiana. Hoosiers had an outstanding season, though.

                    9) Regional final spreads: Virginia -8.5 vs Syracuse.
                    Kansas -2.5 vs Villanova.....Oregon -1 vs Oklahoma........UNC -9.5 vs Notre Dame

                    8) Coaching carousel: Jerod Haase jumps from UAB to Stanford.

Tulane hired 62-year old Mike Dunleavy Sr, who has never coached college ball, but has coached three NBA teams.

                    7) Flip side: Georgia Tech canned Brian Gregory after five years, one night after Gregory was guest analyst on CBS College Sports.

Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin told UNLV to take a hike, using them as leverage to try and get better facilities built for his Bearcats. Leading candidate for the UNLV coaching job appears to be New Mexico State's Marvin Menzies.

                    6) Speaking of CBS College Sports, Danny Granger has a future on TV; he's done a good job on their studio show this month.

                    5) Wisconsin's Ethan Happ is the cousin of major league pitcher JA Happ.

                    4) Major league position players must be going nuts as Opening Day nears; spring training is so damn long because pitchers need to get their arms ready. Hitters do not need 30+ games to ready for the season- then once the season starts, lot of the games will be in much colder weather. which takes a big adjustment.

                    3) Mets are using Wilmer Flores some at 1B; you wonder if he'll become a utility guy once Asdrubel Cabrera gets healthy and becomes the Mets' SS.

                    2) Regional final pointspread trends by region:
-- East final: favorites covered four of last five.
-- South final: favorites covered six of last nine.
-- Midwest final: underdogs are 8-5 vs spread in last 13
-- West final: underdogs are 15-3 vs spread in last 18.

                    1) Guatemala has fewer people than Los Angeles; who knew?

                    • Oklahoma vs. Oregon: Elite Eight betting preview

Buddy Hield is averaging 18 points per game for the tourney and has shot 9-for-16 (56 %) from three.

No. 2 Oklahoma Sooners vs. No. 1 Oregon Ducks (-1, 151)

Game to be played at Honda Center, Anaheim, CA

Oregon defeated Oklahoma on its way to winning the first NCAA Tournament title in 1939, and the top-seeded Ducks will need to go through the No. 2 Sooners again Saturday at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. if they hope to return to the Final Four for the first time in 77 years. Oregon will need to find someone to guard Buddy Hield, the two-time Big 12 player of the year who comes in averaging 25.1 points, while Oklahoma will face a similar challenge against Oregon leading scorer Dillon Brooks, who has combined for 47 points in the last two West Region games.

These teams have two common opponents this season in Baylor and Washington State, but the results shed little light on which team might have the edge in this game. Oklahoma beat Baylor by 10 points and two points in conference play, the Ducks knocked off the Bears by seven points in the second game of the season and each blew out Washington State in their only meetings. Both teams faced their biggest challenges of this tournament in the second round, as Oregon needed to rally from seven points down in the final five minutes against No. 8 Saint Joseph's before winning 69-64, the same day Oklahoma held off No. 10 VCU 85-81. The Sooners came back to hammer No. 3 Texas A&M in the Round of 16, a couple hours before the Ducks also posted a 14-point victory against No. 4 Duke.

                      TV: 6:09 p.m. ET, CBS

LINE HISTORY: The first Elite Eight matchup of the Tournament opened at a Pick and the early action was on Oklahoma, moving the line to Sooners -1. Since then however, action has come back on Oregon, moving back to a Pick then to Ducks -1. Check out the complete line history here.

WHAT SHARPS SAY: "Oregon is still a phony No. 1 seed, and they've had an easy path to the Elite 8. They are taking a big step-up in class here against Oklahoma and the Sooners have the offense to match the Ducks. That wasn’t the case in Oregon’s other three games so far."

                      ABOUT OREGON (28-6, 13-20 ATS, 15-18 O/U)
: Both teams feature exceptional supporting casts to go with their leading scorers, but Oregon might have a little more skill in that area. Elgin Cook is a 6-foot-6 forward like Brooks, but prefers to play more on the inside, where he's averaging 15 points and 8.7 rebounds in the tournament. Tyler Dorsey had a strong finish to the regular season, but the freshman guard has struggled with his offensive efficiency during the tournament, and the Ducks feature two elite shot blockers in Chris Boucher and Jordan Bell, who might end up being the difference in this outcome.

ABOUT OKLAHOMA (28-7, 21-13 ATS, 15-19 O/U): The Ducks won't come close to matching the Sooners when it comes to chemistry among its starting five, as Hield, Jordan Woodard, Ryan Spangler and Isaiah Cousins have started the last 102 games together. Woodard is having the second-best tournament showing on the team behind Hield, averaging 18 points through the first three games while shooting 9-for-16 from 3-point range. Cousins is the player who needs to pick up his production, as the third starting guard for the Sooners was held to a season-low two points against Texas A&M after shooting 1-for-8 from the floor, though he did contribute eight assists.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Oklahoma covered its last game, but is 3-11 ATS in its last 14 games.
                      * Oregon is 8-2 ATS in its last 10 NCAA Tournament games.
                      * Under is 11-2 in Oklahoma's last 13 games overall.
                      * Under is 7-3 in Oregon's last 10 games overall.

CONSENSUS: The public is fairly split for the West Region final, with 54 percent of the wagers on the No. 1 seed Ducks. As for the total, 66 percent of wagers think the result will go Over.

Villanova vs. Kansas: Elite Eight betting preview

The No. 1 overall seeded Jayhawks haven't lost sinec Jan. 25 and are 14-3 ATS in that span.

No. 2 Villanova Wildcats vs. No. 1 Kansas Jayhawks (-2.5, 145.5)

Game to be played at KFC Yum! Center, Louisville, KY

Saturday's matchup between Kansas and Villanova features the two teams that perhaps have been more impressive than any other in this NCAA Tournament. Yet, the top-seeded Jayhawks and second-seeded Wildcats are vying for one spot in the Final Four when the teams clash in Louisville to determine the South Region champion.

Leading up to this star-studded matchup that features impact players ranging from freshmen to seniors, Kansas has won its first three games by 26, 12 and 16 points, while Villanova has throttled opponents by 30, 19 and 23 to this point in the tournament. "They're a red-hot team right now," Kansas coach Bill Self said to reporters. "But, honestly, we've been playing pretty well ourselves." Self is looking to get his Jayhawks to the Final Four for the first time since 2012, while the Wildcats have not reached the national semifinals since 2009. "My first responsibility is to these guys. I would love to see them play in the Final Four," said Villanova coach Jay Wright, whose team has won 15 of its last 17, although Kansas has captured 17 games in a row.

                      TV: 8:49 p.m. ET, CBS

LINE HISTORY: Kansas, the South's No. 1 seed, opened as 2.5-point favorites for the regional final over second-seeded Villanova. The early action was on the Wildcats, moving the number to Jayhawks -2, before bouncing back to the opening number and that is where the line currently sits. Check out the complete line history here.

WHAT SHARPS SAY: "Villanova has shot the lights out in their three tournament games, so regression has to set in at some point. Kansas has yet to be challenged, and their opponent here is very good. But the Jayhawks have an excellent defense that should prevent the Wildcats from shooting a high percentage once again."

ABOUT VILLANOVA (32-5, 18-17-1 ATS, 19-16-1 O/U): The Wildcats put on a shooting clinic in their 93-69 victory over Miami (Fla.) in the Sweet 16, connecting on 62.7 percent of their shots from the field, 10-of-15 from the 3-point line and 18-of-19 from the foul line. "If any team is shooting the way we're shooting right now, they'll easily be the most dangerous team in the country," Villanova forward Daniel Ochefu said to reporters after scoring 17 points, joining three of his teammates in double-figures. "But hopefully, we'll keep shooting like that, so we can keep playing the way we are." Fellow senior Ryan Arcidiacono scored 21 points against the Hurricanes and is shooting just over 65 percent from the field (10-of-16 from the arc) in his final NCAA Tournament, while Kris Jenkins is 8-of-11 from long range over the last two games.

ABOUT KANSAS (33-4, 24-11 ATS, 13-21-1 O/U): The Jayhawks defeated the Wildcats in the 2008 Sweet 16 en route to winning the national championship and will have a good chance to top Villanova again if senior Perry Ellis can duplicate his effort against Maryland on Thursday (season high-tying 27 points). Ellis is averaging 23 points in the tournament and leads the team at 17.2 points on the season, but that elusive Final Four is one win away - as Self noted when he said, “This is why (Ellis) came back to school." Kansas desperately needs more production out of its bench, as the Jayhawks reserves combined to shoot 2-of-9 versus the Terrpains and the unit once again will be without sharpshooter Brannen Greene (back spasms).

                      TRENDS:

                      * Villanova is 9-2 ATS in its last 11 games after scoring more than 90 points in its previous game.
                      * Kansas is 14-3 ATS in its last 17 games overall.
                      * Over is 10-2 in Villanova's last 12 games overall.
                      * Under is 12-3-1 in Kansas' last 16 games vs. a team with a winning percentage above .600.

CONSENSUS: Bettors are backing Kansas in the South Region Final, with 62 percent of wagers on the Jayhawks. As for the total, bettors are strongly on the over, with 75 percent of wagers on it.

OKLAHOMA SOONERS (28-7) vs. OREGON DUCKS (31-6)

                            Honda Center - Anaheim, CA
                            Tip-off: Saturday, 6:10 p.m. ET
                            Sportsbook.ag Line: Oregon -1.5, Total: 153.5

#2 Oklahoma and #1 Oregon will be battling for a spot in the Final Four when the teams meet on Saturday.

Oklahoma played its best game of the tournament on Thursday, defeating #3 Texas A&M 77-63 as a 2.5-point favorite. The Sooners had failed to cover the spread in seven straight games before facing the Aggies, so it’ll be huge for their confidence that they were able to win one convincingly.

Oregon, meanwhile, defeated #4 Duke 82-68 as a 3.5-point favorite last game. The Ducks have won-and-covered in two of their three tournament games and one thing this team has done is take care of the basketball. Oregon has turned the ball over more than 10 times in just one of its past five games. Avoiding mistakes is crucial in this tournament and the Ducks will need to make sure they don’t cough it up too often against the Sooners on Saturday. Oregon is an impressive 11-1 ATS after four straight games committing 11 or less turnovers since 1997.

The Sooners are coming off of an impressive win over the Aggies on Thursday and G Buddy Hield (25.1 PPG, 5.7 RPG, 1.1 SPG) has been outstanding through the first three rounds of this tournament. Hield is averaging 26.7 PPG in the first three games and he is 11-for-27 from the outside so far. If he can get hot against the Ducks then the Sooners just might pull off the upset in this one. He will need help from guys like Gs Isaiah Cousins (12.8 PPG, 4.6 APG, 4.5 RPG, 1.4 SPG) and Jordan Woodard (13.0 PPG, 1.6 SPG).

Cousins was awful against Texas A&M last game, finishing with just two points on 1-for-8 shooting from the field. He’ll need to be more efficient against this Ducks team on Saturday. Woodard, meanwhile, had 22 points and five assists against the Aggies on Thursday. He is 9-for-16 from the outside in the tournament and if he can stay hot then it’ll take a lot of pressure off of Hield moving forward.

The Ducks are one of the hottest teams in college basketball right now and they are now one win away from surprising a lot of people with a Final Four appearance. If Oregon is going to win then F Dillon Brooks (17.0 PPG, 5.6 RPG, 3.1 APG, 1.1 SPG) is going to need to catch fire for his team. He’s averaging 23.5 PPG over the past two contests and is 8-for-16 from the outside in those games. He is shooting the ball extremely well and it is opening up the floor for him to drive more.

F Elgin Cook (14.6 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 1.4 SPG) is also playing well for the Ducks lately. He’s averaging 17.0 PPG and 6.5 RPG over the past two games and is a really tough cover. The Sooners often play an undersized lineup, so Brooks and Cook will need to use their size to their advantage.

G Casey Benson (6.0 PPG, 3.1 APG) could be an x-factor in this game. The Ducks will need a guard to step it up in this one and Benson was great against Duke, finishing with 11 points and eight assists.

VILLANOVA WILDCATS (32-5) vs. KANSAS JAYHAWKS (33-4)

KFC Yum! Center - Louisville, KY
                            Tip-off: Saturday, 8:50 p.m. ET
                            Sportsbook.ag Line: Kansas -2.5, 146.5

#1 Kansas will be going for its 18th straight victory when the team faces #2 Villanova in the Elite Eight on Saturday.

Villanova has been one of the most impressive teams in the tournament, winning its three games by an average of 20.7 PPG. The Wildcats most recently took on #3 Miami and won 92-69 as four-point favorites. They shot 62.7% from the floor in that game and if they continue to play offense like that then it’s hard to imagine them missing out on the Final Four.

The Jayhawks, meanwhile, have now won 17 straight games after defeating #5 Maryland 79-63 as 5.5-point favorites on Thursday. Kansas has won each of its tournament games by double digits and has won-and-covered in 14 of the past 17 games as well. This team is really locked in defensively, as it has now held five of its past six opponents to less than 45% shooting from the field.

These two teams have met just four times since 1997 and they have split victories in those game SU. However, Villanova is 3-1 ATS in those meetings and the Wildcats are also 11-4 ATS in non-conference games this season. The Jayhawks won’t be intimidated though, as they are 7-0 ATS when playing away from home on Saturdays this season and 11-2 ATS versus non-conference opponents this season as well.

The Wildcats are coming off of a dominant performance against Miami and G Ryan Arcidiacono (12.3 PPG, 4.4 APG, 2.9 RPG, 1.4 SPG) was brilliant for Villanova in that game. In 35 minutes of action, Arcidiacono finished the game with 21 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field and 4-for-7 shooting from the outside. He also had three steals on the defensive end. Arcidiacono is a ferocious player on both ends of the floor and he’ll do everything he can to make Kansas’ guards uncomfortable on Saturday.

F Kris Jenkins (13.5 PPG) is also going to need to come out and play a good game on both ends of the floor on Saturday. Jenkins had 21 points, nine boards and four assists against Miami on Thursday. He was on fire in that game, going 8-for-10 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the outside. If he can shoot like that once again on Saturday then the Wildcats may just get themselves into the Final Four.

F Daniel Ochefu (10.1 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 1.6 BPG) is going to be the x-factor in this game, though. Ochefu had 17 points on 7-for-11 shooting against the Hurricanes and that type of offensive performance would really help his team in this one. He will, however, need to dig in defensively on Saturday. The Jayhawks have a number of talented frontcourt players and Ochefu will need to do his best to contain them.

The Jayhawks have been the best team in college basketball all season and they have not skipped a beat in tournament play either. One guy who is playing really well at the moment is F Perry Ellis (17.2 PPG, 5.9 RPG). Ellis had 27 points and five rebounds against Maryland and he also scored 21 points in each of the previous two tournament games. Ellis will need to be on his game on Saturday. He is versatile enough to really give the Wildcats fits in this game.

G Wayne Selden Jr. (13.7 PPG) is also playing well for the Jayhawks right now. Selden Jr. had 19 points, seven boards and six assists against the Terrapins on Thursday. It helps that he is 4-for-10 from the outside, as he has struggled in the tournament in his career but has showed a ton of confidence this year.

One guy that does need to step it up for Kansas is G Devonte’ Graham (11.2 PPG, 1.5 SPG). Graham is averaging just 5.0 PPG through three tournament games and this team will be counting on him to be effective as a scorer later in the tournament.

                            • OK's Kruger, Oregon's Altman test bond
                              March 25, 2016

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Lon Kruger and Dana Altman are headed to Scotland in July for the latest golfing adventure in their three-decade-long friendship.

''We're still doing that, I guess, regardless of what happens tomorrow,'' Kruger said with a wry smile Friday.

Indeed, the coaches first have a date in Orange County on Saturday, and it won't be quite as much fun for either of them.

Altman's top-seeded Oregon Ducks (31-6) are facing Kruger's second-seeded Oklahoma Sooners (28-7) in the West Region final for a spot in the Final Four.

Kruger and Altman hoped they would never have to coach against each other, and they had managed to avoid it throughout their parallel careers. But with two powerhouse teams heading into a landmark game for both programs, this coaching collision is unavoidable.

''When the pairings came out a couple weeks ago, I talked to Coach,'' Altman said Friday. ''We just said at that time that if we're fortunate to get to this point, at least one of us is going to go to the Final Four.''

Their friendship came out of a calculated acquisition by Kruger in 1986 when he hired Altman to join his staff at Kansas State. Kruger wanted Altman's youthful energy and smarts - but he really wanted Mitch Richmond and a handful of Altman's other players on the nation's top-ranked junior college team in Missouri.

Their three years together led to three NCAA Tournament berths and the start of an enduring bond.

''We've got a handful of coaches that are best friends, and certainly Dana is one of them,'' Kruger said.

Kruger reached the 1994 Final Four with Florida, but hasn't been back since. Altman has never reached the Final Four in a quarter-century in charge of four programs.

The West finale is both a test and a celebration of their careers. The coaches have built remarkably similar teams, with both relying on deep, balanced rosters of athletic players surrounding an elite scorer: Oklahoma's Buddy Hield and Oregon's Dillon Brooks.

''Both clubs prefer the (high) pace,'' Kruger said. ''They prefer the tempo. We certainly are better when we're able to go. I think they are, too.''

Some more things to consider in these schools' first meeting in 75 years:

                              ---

UP ON OREGON: Saturday is a historic time for the Ducks, who won the Pac-12 regular-season and tournament titles to earn the first No. 1 seed in school history. The Ducks have rolled into the regional final with a school-record 31 wins, but they realize they can't reach their first Final Four since 1939 in a building likely to be packed by their West Coast fan base.

                              UP ON OKLAHOMA:
The Sooners' core four of Hield, Ryan Spangler, Jordan Woodard and Isaiah Cousins will start its 104th consecutive game together, along with 36 straight starts by Khadeem Lattin. OU is after its first Final Four trip since 2002. ''We ride and fight all together, so I think ending on a good note would be special for us,'' Hield said.

                              STOPPING HIELD:
The Oklahoma starters' collective experience and togetherness is remarkable in the modern game. The Ducks are appropriately impressed, but they're also determined to defend the perimeter against Hield and his teammates, who have the second-best 3-point shooting percentage in the nation (.426). ''We haven't seen a team like this with a core group that's been there for all four years, and we've never seen a player who shoots the ball like Buddy Hield,'' Brooks said. ''We're really going to have to run them off the line and not let them get easy baskets.''

JUICY HISTORY: These schools actually met in the first NCAA Tournament back in 1939, when Oregon beat Oklahoma in the West Region final in a game played on Treasure Island in the middle of San Francisco Bay. Oregon went on to win the national title. The schools met again in the 1940-41 season, and they haven't met since then.

MITCH'S FOOTPRINTS: Richmond led the two coaches' Wildcats to the Elite Eight, and Altman landed his first Division I head coaching job a year later at Marshall. A year after that, Altman replaced Kruger at K-State when Kruger left for Florida. Richmond's son, Phil, is a walk-on at Oregon. Mitch Richmond attended Thursday's games to watch both of his former coaches. ''I owe so much of my career to Coach Kruger, but I probably owe more to Mitch,'' Altman said. Options

                              • Altman backs Brooks after late-game drama with Coach K
                                March 26, 2016

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Oregon head coach Dana Altman says that if anyone has a problem with Dillon Brooks' late-game shooting choices or celebrations, they should come to him.

Altman spoke up for his leading scorer Friday after Brooks' celebration of his last-minute 3-pointer and a postgame conversation with Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski drew almost more attention than the top-seeded Ducks advancing to the Elite Eight.

With Oregon up 79-68 in the final eight seconds of the NCAA West Region semifinal on Thursday, Brooks took a long 3-pointer with the shot clock expiring. He made it and apparently celebrated a little too hard for the Blue Devils' liking, even attempting to goad Duke guard Grayson Allen into a celebration with him.

It became a controversy overnight, and the Ducks are failing to understand why.

''At the end of the game, there was a difference in the shot clock and the game clock,'' Altman said. ''I told Dillon to shoot it. So if anybody's got a problem with it, it should be directed at me. He was acting on my orders. I told him to shoot it. I didn't think he'd make it. It was a 30-footer, but there was a five-, six-second difference there.''

The cameras caught a postgame exchange between Krzyzewski, who appeared to say something to Brooks about the celebration.

''He just told me that I'm too good of a player to be showing out at the end,'' Brooks said in the locker room following the game. ''And he's right. I've got to respect Duke.''

But Krzyzewski disputed Brooks' account of the postgame message, appearing angry when it was brought up in the postgame press conference.

''I didn't say that,'' Krzyzewski said. ''You can say whatever you want. Dillon Brooks is a hell of a player. I said, `You're a terrific player.' And you can take whatever he said and go with it, all right?''

Brooks expressed remorse Friday when he realized how much attention had been given to the inconsequential basket.

''Me and Coach K, that conversation should have stayed with us,'' Brooks said. ''But overall, me and Coach K are both professionals and I have to move on from this situation and focus on Oklahoma.''

Brooks doesn't make any attempt to hide his fiery persona on the court. He acknowledges that his brash play occasionally is detrimental, but has learned to harness it into productive play for the most part.

Yet Brooks doesn't plan to tone himself down in the West final against Oklahoma. He said he'll bring the same energy that he's brought all year.

''It's been a hassle all of my life to figure out how to channel it and find ways to put it to great use,'' Brooks said. ''I feel like I've found a way and I have to bring it every day. I can't pull it back because I've tried that already and it hasn't worked to any good extent. I've just got to keep playing with emotion and live or die by it.''
