      • Friday's Tip Sheet
        February 19, 2016

        **Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth**

-- VCU (19-7 straight up, 15-6 ATS) won its first nine games in Atlantic-10 play before dropping back-to-back games. Since then, however, the Rams have produced a pair of home wins over Saint Louis (85-52) and Rhode Island (83-67). They took it to URI on Tuesday night as 9.5-point home favorites. Mo Alie-Cox led the way with 21 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the field. Melvin Johnson added 19 points and four assists, knocking down 4-of-9 from beyond the 3-point arc. Korey Billbury finished with 14 points and six rebounds.

-- The Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas opened VCU as a 9.5-point home favorite vs. Richmond late Thursday afternoon.

-- VCU has won 13 of its 15 home games, posting a 7-3 spread record in the process.

-- VCU is No. 52 in the RPI Rankings, producing a 2-3 record against the Top 50 and a 4-6 mark versus the Top 100. The Rams have quality wins at St. Joseph’s, at Middle Tennessee, at Davidson and vs. St. Bonaventure at home. There’s no shame in a few of their defeats like neutral-court setbacks vs. FSU (76-71), vs. Duke (79-71) and vs. Wisconsin (74-73).

-- Johnson paced VCU in scoring by averaging 18.2 points per game. Johnson is shooting 41.7 percent from downtown. Billbury (11.5 PPG, 5.0 RPG) is hitting 42.1 percent of his attempts from 3-point range. JeQuan Lewis (11.2 PPG) leads the Rams in assists (125), steals (46) and 3-point shooting percentage (44.1%).

-- Richmond (14-11 SU, 9-12 ATS) owns a 4-5 record both SU and ATS in nine road assignments.

-- Richmond is No. 119 in the RPI, compiling a 2-5 record against the Top 50 and a 2-9 mark versus the Top 100. The Spiders have quality wins at George Washington and vs. California on a neutral floor.

-- Richmond saw its three-game winning streak snapped in Tuesday’s 83-79 loss at Davidson as a one-point underdog. T.J. Cline had 25 points, five rebounds and three assists without a turnover in the losing effort. Terry Allen added 17 points, eight rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals. Nevertheless, the Spiders came up short despite the fact that Davidson star guard Jack Gibbs didn’t play due to an illness.

-- Richmond has been an underdog nine times this year, going 3-6 both SU and ATS.

-- Allen lead the Spiders in scoring (18.4 PPG), rebounding (8.2 RPG) and steals (1.6 SPG).

-- The ‘under’ is 11-10 overall for VCU, but the ‘over’ is 6-4 in its home games.

-- The ‘over’ is 13-8 overall for the Spiders, 5-4 in their road contests.

-- ESPN2 will have the broadcast at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

        **Iona at Monmouth**

-- The Westgate opened Monmouth (22-5 SU, 16-9 ATS) as a six-point favorite, while a few offshore shops had the total at 165 Thursday night.

-- Monmouth has won eight in a row but it has failed to cover the number in its last two outings. Even worse, the Hawks lost a key part of their arsenal moving forward in Monday’s 79-70 non-covering win over Manhattan as 14-point home ‘chalk.’ Deon Jones (10.4 PPG, 6.2 RPG) is ‘out’ indefinitely after breaking his hand against the Jaspers.

-- Monmouth is No. 40 in the RPI, going 2-2 versus the Top 50 and 6-2 against the Top 100. The Hawks own neutral-court victories over Notre Dame and Southern Cal. They also won at UCLA and at Georgetown, in addition to sweeping the season series from Siena (RPI: 91).

-- Robinson is the captain of the ship for King Rice’s club. The 5’8”, 160-pound point guard is averaging 20.3 points, 3.8 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game.

-- Monmouth is unbeaten in eight home games, posting a 4-3 spread record.

-- Iona (15-10 SU, 10-14 ATS) has been an underdog five times, going winless with a 1-4 spread record.

-- Iona has won five of its last six games both SU and ATS, including Monday’s 78-59 win vs. Quinnipiac as a 15-point home ‘chalk.’ A.J. English scored 16 points, dished out six assists and grabbed five rebounds. Ibn Muhammad and Isaiah Williams scored 15 points apiece.

-- English leads the Gaels in scoring (21.2 PPG) and assists (6.4 APG).

-- When these teams met in New Rochelle on Jan. 15, Monmouth captured a 110-102 victory as a 1.5-point road underdog. Robinson tallied 29 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. He was 12-of-12 from the charity stripe to help Monmouth backers cash tickets. Jones added 18 points.

-- The ‘under’ is 14-10-1 overall for Monmouth, 5-2 in its home games.

-- Totals have been an overall wash (12-12) for Iona, but the ‘under’ is 6-5 in its home contests.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 10:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPNU.

        • ACC Title Picture
          February 18, 2016

The ACC basketball standings look as wide open as they have been since the 2006-07 season. Currently two teams sit on top of the ACC tied with three losses while four others sit with four losses, but many of those teams will be playing each other down the stretch. Here is a look at the chances of taking the title for the remaining contenders in the nation’s premier conference.

Seven of the past 15 national champions have come out of the current group of ACC teams as the conference remains the standard bearer in college basketball. Even with the expansion to an 18-game conference season the past three years, the regular season champion in the ACC has had no more than three losses in each of the past eight seasons. With Duke’s win over North Carolina on Wednesday, the 2015-16 ACC regular season champion will have at least three losses at a minimum and the league’s chances to score a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament look limited barring a great run the rest of the way from one of these teams.

North Carolina (10-3): The Tar Heels have been considered a national title contender all season and with a 21-5 record and a still ACC-leading 10-3 conference record that notion hasn’t changed. The Tar Heels certainly appear to be slipping out of contention for one of the #1 seeds with losses in three of the past five games. While the talent on the roster for the Tar Heels is nationally elite, the record could continue to slide with a very tough remaining schedule. North Carolina has a back-loaded ACC schedule as they have played just three games against the five other ACC teams with four or fewer conference losses and they are actually 0-3 in those games. They take on current conference co-leader Miami this weekend and will still face difficult road games vs. Virginia and Duke down the stretch.

Miami, FL (10-3): Few expected Miami to be an ACC championship contender this season, but the Hurricanes will take the outright lead in the conference if they can beat North Carolina this weekend. Miami has wins over Notre Dame and Duke this season, but both of those big victories came at home. Miami is just 3-3 in ACC play on the road with a two-point win over Florida State being the strongest of those wins. In addition to playing in Chapel Hill, Miami also has a rematch in South Bend with the Irish while hosting two other top squads Virginia and Louisville in the remaining schedule as by season’s end the current co-leader in the conference might wind up falling back towards the middle of the pack.

Virginia (10-4): The Cavaliers have won the ACC regular season title each of the past two seasons with a 16-2 record, a mark that no team in the conference will reach this season. That excellence has been overshadowed by marginal results in the NCAA Tournament as it might be preferable for this year’s team to enter the Big Dance slightly less heralded. Virginia has a daunting remaining schedule to navigate if they hope to win a third straight regular season conference title facing road games with Miami and Clemson while hosting North Carolina and Louisville. Virginia has higher-end conference wins than most of the other contenders with victories over six of the nine teams that currently have a winning record in the ACC, but the schedule calls for four more games in that category.

Notre Dame (9-4): Few are talking about the possibility of Notre Dame taking the ACC title, but the shot for the Irish is very legitimate. Notre Dame has five games to go and each of the next three games will be on the road, but they only have one remaining game against a team that currently has a winning ACC record. The most difficult remaining game will be against Miami at home in early March in a rematch for the Irish after losing by nine at Miami in early February. It won’t be a shock if the Irish drops one of the road games vs. Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, or Florida State, but considering the slates remaining for the rest of the ACC contenders, Notre Dame has to like its chances to move up.

Louisville (9-4): With the Cardinals banned from the postseason, the regular season title is all Louisville has left to play for. Some teams in that tough situation have mailed in the rest of the campaign, but this team doesn’t appear ready to quit even though there have been losses in two of the last three games. The misses came on the road in extremely close games with Duke and Notre Dame and this week the Cardinals bounced back with a rout over Syracuse to take the Orange off this list. Louisville’s remaining schedule is difficult, but they will at the very least have a chance to play spoiler with some of the other top contenders, facing Duke, Miami, and Virginia among the final five games.

Duke (9-4): With losses in four of five games in January, last season’s national championship winner was out of the Top 25 and potentially looking at a spot on the NCAA Tournament bubble. With five straight wins that is no longer the case and the Blue Devils are still in the mix for the ACC title. The last three wins have come by the slimmest of margins for a very thin roster but wins over Louisville, Virginia, and North Carolina in succession is about as impressive as it gets for a three-game run. The Blue Devils won’t get time to enjoy the big win in Chapel Hill as they face a rematch at Louisville this weekend and will still have to host the Tar Heels in the season finale.

Clemson (9-5): The Tigers are certainly a long shot with five defeats and six teams to pass in the ACC race, but given all the games the top teams will play against each other, a split co-championship with multiple 13-5 ACC teams is a real possibility this season. Clemson has been very tough at home in ACC play with wins over Louisville, Duke, and Miami and the toughest remaining game will be at home hosting Virginia on the first day of March. Road games at NC State and at Georgia Tech can be challenging, but the Tigers can’t be ruled out of the picture just yet. With a few ugly non-conference losses on the resume, this is a team that will need a strong finish to make the NCAA Tournament and the schedule does line up for that possibility.

                      • Preview: Musketeers (23-3) at Hoyas (14-13)
                        Date: February 20, 2016 12:00 PM EDT

Days away from a rematch with the nation's No. 1 team, don't expect Xavier to look past its next opponent.

The eighth-ranked Musketeers have another revenge opportunity at hand in Saturday's trip to scuffling Georgetown.

Xavier (23-3, 11-3 Big East) has had few slip-ups during its unforeseen run into the top 10, but one occurred in an 81-72 loss to the Hoyas in Cincinnati on Jan. 19. The Musketeers were done in by their second-lowest shooting performance of the season at 35.3 percent and a rare disadvantage on the glass, with Georgetown owning a 39-35 edge on one of the nation's premier rebounding teams.

The Musketeers have regrouped to win seven of eight to close within 1 1/2 games of top-ranked Villanova, which visits a sold-out Cintas Center on Wednesday. The Wildcats routed Xavier 95-64 on New Year's Eve.

Conversely, Georgetown (14-13, 7-7) has fallen apart since that last matchup, losing six of eight overall and five of its last six conference games. The Hoyas have been foiled by inconsistent scoring and an inability to win close games, problems that lingered in Wednesday's 72-64 defeat to Seton Hall.

The Hoyas shot 37.7 percent with top scorers D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera and L.J. Peak going a combined 10 of 31 and missing 11 of 13 3-point attempts. Georgetown, averaging a Big East-leading 8.2 makes from 3-point range in league play, has hit just 25.5 percent in dropping two straight.

"We have to make sure that we get more than one or two people to show up at a game," said coach John Thompson III, whose team is 2-6 in games decided by five points or less. "(When) multiple people show up we play well."

Georgetown shot 51.0 percent and went 10 of 25 from 3 last month against the Musketeers, with Smith-Rivera scoring 20 points and Tre Campbell amassing a career-high 21 while finishing 5 of 7 from beyond the arc.

Campbell has endured a massive slump since, going 4 of 28 from the field in averaging a mere 1.6 points over his last eight.

Freshman Jessie Govan did provide a bright spot against Seton Hall with a career-high 27 points on 10-of-13 shooting in a second straight start in place of injured center Bradley Hayes (broken hand).

A repeat performance figures to be difficult against Xavier's tough interior defense. The Musketeers limited Butler and Providence to a combined 31.5 percent within the arc in their last two wins and held the No. 23 Friars to 10 points in the paint in Wednesday's 85-74 victory.

Trevon Bluiett broke out of a two-game slump by scoring 17 of his 23 points in the first half and Myles Davis notched a triple-double of 11 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists for Xavier, which built a 52-37 lead at intermission.

"I just thought we were clicking on all cylinders in the first half," coach Chris Mack said. "I thought our zone defense bothered them a heck of a lot more in the first half than the second half. It's how we sort of envisioned it if everything went well."

Xavier has won four of six against Georgetown since joining the Big East in 2013-14, including all three meetings last season. Davis had 19 points in a 66-53 victory at the Verizon Center on Jan. 27. 2015.

                        • Preview: Hurricanes (21-4) at Tar Heels (21-5)
                          Date: February 20, 2016 1:00 PM EDT

While North Carolina's late collapse in its highest profile game remains the talk of college basketball, Miami continues to climb the ACC ladder with very little fanfare.

The 11th-ranked Hurricanes won't be overlooked anymore during a grueling four-game stretch beginning with Saturday's visit to the No. 5 Tar Heels that will give the winner sole possession of the conference lead.

'I know we're tied for first place, but we've got to treat it like any other game and not let anything else get in our heads," Miami senior Angel Rodriguez said. "You've got to play defense and put the ball in the basket.'

Three games out of first place to start February, Miami (21-4, 10-3) has caught the Tar Heels in the standings by winning five straight and capitalizing on the latter's recent struggles. After starting 8-0 against a relatively soft portion of its league schedule, North Carolina (21-5, 10-3) has lost tougher matchups with Louisville, Notre Dame and Duke over a five-game span.

The Hurricanes have faced only one upper-tier opponent during their surge, defeating Notre Dame at home Feb. 3. The slate is about to become substantially heavier, though, with the Tar Heels the first of four consecutive opponents they'll face who are currently ranked.

Miami hosts No. 7 Virginia, just a half-game out of first place, on Monday before a home date with No. 18 Louisville and a road rematch with the 19th-ranked Fighting Irish.

'These are very challenging games, but ones you look forward to," coach Jim Larranaga said.

For the Tar Heels, the immediate challenge is putting behind Wednesday's startling 74-73 home loss to rival Duke, a game they let slip away by blowing a 68-60 lead with 6 1-2 minutes left. North Carolina missed six of its final eight field-goal attempts and watched the No. 20 Blue Devils rally to win despite using only five players for nearly the entire second half after losing starter Matt Jones.

"We just couldn't get a stop, and whenever they needed to get a stop, they played good defense, and we didn't have the best offense in the world," forward Justin Jackson said.

North Carolina also saw its perimeter woes return, finishing 1 of 13 from 3-point range to offset Brice Johnson's 29 points and 19 rebounds. The Tar Heels, last in the ACC in 3-point percentage (30.9), have shot 25.7 percent from beyond the arc over their last 10.

The Tar Heels have remained a dangerous offensive team despite those struggles, largely due to Johnson's dominance in the post. The ACC's leading rebounder has six double-doubles in his last eight games and amassed 48 points on 22-of-29 shooting over his past two.

Johnson went 11 of 15 from the field in a 22-point, 11-rebound effort as North Carolina snapped a three-game series skid with a 73-64 win in Coral Gables on Feb. 28, 2015. The Tar Heels had 17 points on 13 Miami turnovers and rank among the conference leaders in takeaways this season.

The Hurricanes have been terrific at taking care of the ball, though, averaging 9.1 turnovers over their last seven. They've also been stingy on the defensive end, yielding 59.0 points per game over their past three wins.

Miami limited Virginia Tech to a season-low 29.6 percent shooting in Wednesday's 65-49 victory.

The Hurricanes played without third-leading scorer Ja'Quan Newton due to an undisclosed medical issue, though he's been cleared to play Saturday.

                          • Preview: Bears (19-7) at Longhorns (17-9)
                            Date: February 20, 2016 2:00 PM EDT

It would be a shame for Baylor if Big 12 leading rebounder Rico Gathers can't play Saturday.

The No. 25 Bears are hoping Gathers is available to help them try to gain revenge for a home loss to No. 24 Texas in what would be the senior forward's last chance to win in Austin.

Gathers, averaging 10.2 rebounds, has missed two of the last three games because of illness. The Bears (19-7, 8-5) have won both of them, beating No. 13 Iowa State 100-91 in overtime Tuesday.

'I wouldn't say we're more focused. I just think we just know the things we have to do better when he's out,' leading scorer Taurean Prince said. 'Just leadership, everybody knew what was at stake. Even before the game, we talked about it being a must win.'

Gathers also sat out an 82-72 victory at Kansas State on Feb. 10. The Bears have lost three straight with him in the lineup.

The first of those defeats came when Gathers had 20 points and eight rebounds in a 67-59 loss to Texas on Feb. 1, in a contest in which a Buffalo Bills scout was there to watch him play. He had a major role in a chippy second half that included an incident in which Gathers fouled Longhorns center Prince Ibeh and then exchanged words with Texas star Isaiah Taylor. Gathers and Taylor received technical fouls.

The Bears shot a season-low 35.2 percent and held only a 34-30 edge on the glass. They are second in the Big 12 in rebound margin at plus-8.5 while the Longhorns (17-9, 8-5) are second-worst at minus-0.8.

Baylor's last win at Texas was in 2011-12 - the season before Gathers joined the team for three straight defeats in Austin in which he totaled 19 points and 18 rebounds while shooting 35.0 percent.

Johnathan Motley stepped up Tuesday by matching his career high with 27 points, including seven in overtime. Motley, a former high school teammate of Longhorns freshman reserve guard Kerwin Roach Jr., has started both games that Gathers has missed.

Texas improved to 3-0 against Top 25 teams at home with Tuesday's 85-78 victory over No. 10 West Virginia. Taylor scored 23 points with seven assists and went 13 for 13 at the line as the Longhorns avoided a third straight defeat.

"For the most part tonight, he was under control and made some great plays, some great passes," coach Shaka Smart said. "Then when he got fouled, he made them pay."

Freshman Eric Davis Jr. made 4 of 4 3-pointers and scored 15 for his highest total in a Big 12 game. He made three 3s in a key surge to close the first half as Texas took a 45-36 lead into the locker room.

Davis had made 1 of 8 3-pointers over his previous five games.

"I think when he saw that first one go in, that was big for him," Smart said. "I told him that he has to be confident and aggressive no matter what. He's a freshman and he's making a transition. I thought he took a really big step tonight."

Connor Lammert scored a career high-tying 15 in the Longhorns' win earlier this month in Waco. Prince had 18 points for the Bears.

                            • Preview: Fighting Irish (18-7) at Yellow Jackets (14-12)
                              Date: February 20, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

Some major ACC showdowns are on tap this weekend, and Notre Dame coach Mike Brey wants to make sure his team will take advantage when some rivals lose.

The 19th-ranked Fighting Irish begin a stretch of three straight road games Saturday night when they face a Georgia Tech team they have beaten four straight times.

Notre Dame (18-7, 9-4) is one of six ranked teams separated by one game atop the ACC. Co-leaders No. 5 North Carolina and No. 11 Miami meet Saturday, and another critical matchup pits No. 18 Louisville against No. 20 Duke.

The Fighting Irish will gain ground on two of those foes with a fourth straight victory and are well rested after beating the then-No. 13 Cardinals 71-66 last Saturday.

"We know the top four teams can get a double-bye, it's not out of the question we can chase down a regular-season championship so I'm really pleased at how we've grown as a group and are playing well at the right time," Brey said.

The coach is wary of completing a sweep of the Yellow Jackets after a 72-64 home win Jan. 13, in which Georgia Tech (14-12, 4-9) got within three points with 3:25 left. The Fighting Irish's four wins in a row in this series have been by a combined 21 points.

The Yellow Jackets, who start four seniors, come in with some momentum after winning 86-80 at Florida State on Wednesday.

"Georgia Tech played great at Florida State, they are old, we've had grinding games with them," Brey said. "They're playing for their postseason life right now and they have new life after what they did in Tallahassee. So if we could scratch out a road win against Georgia Tech to get to 10 league wins, we would be thrilled."

The senior backcourt of Adam Smith and Marcus Georges-Hunt totaled 52 points against the Seminoles and combined to go 20 of 27 from the foul line.

"We rode our two seniors on the perimeter, Adam and Marcus, and they were great," coach Brian Gregory said.

That duo combined for 33 points in the first meeting, although they took 30 shots as the Yellow Jackets shot a season-low 33.3 percent.

Georgia Tech was hurt by Zach Auguste, who made 10 of 13 shots for 24 points. Many of his baskets came on pick-and-rolls run by point guard Demetrius Jackson, who had 18 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.

The Irish have shortened their rotation in this win streak, with Rex Pflueger the only reserve logging double digits in minutes. Jackson had a career high-tying 27 points last Saturday and Steve Vasturia added 20 in the first game in the last three in which all five starters did not score in double figures.

Jackson is averaging 21.0 points in the last three games while playing every minute.

"Those guys (starters) have become so efficient on both ends of the floor, especially to finish a game, so I've really tried to play them together a little bit more," Brey said.

Georgia Tech's last victory in the series came in these teams' first ACC meeting, a 74-69 win Jan. 11, 2014.
