Preview: Terrapins (19-3) at Cornhuskers (12-10)
    Date: February 03, 2016 8:30 PM EDT

Maryland freshman center Diamond Stone has endured a string of difficult efforts, though he could be poised to break out in his next game.

He'll be up against an undersized Nebraska team that was manhandled by a big man its last time out as the fourth-ranked Terrapins head to Lincoln on Wednesday night.

Stone is one of the conference's top freshmen, averaging 12.8 points despite struggling with foul trouble at times. His 24.7 points, 10.7 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per 40 minutes lead all Maryland regulars. However, he's totaled 25 points on 35.0 percent shooting in his last three games, including 10 points on 3-of-11 shooting in Sunday's 66-61 victory at Ohio State.

One positive for the 6-foot-11 Stone is that he did not have a personal foul for the first time.

"It was a frustrating night for him and he still had 10 points, the kid's amazing," coach Mark Turgeon said. "I told him the sun will come up tomorrow and we'll move on and he'll play better."

Turgeon may be right based on how Nebraska (12-10, 4-5 Big Ten) couldn't stop Purdue 7-footer A.J. Hammons in Saturday's 89-74 road defeat. Hammons made 14 of 17 shots for a career-best 32 points along with 11 rebounds and five assists.

The Cornhuskers tried a variety of defenses to no avail. They do not have a player taller than 6-8 among their top eight in minutes per game.

"Even in man and zone, we didn't quite fight him, his position early enough so then we had to go fronts," coach Tim Miles said. "Plan B wasn't as good as we'd hoped. Plan A stunk."

The lack of size will be an issue against Stone, who has shown flashes of dominance with a 39-point effort against Penn State on Dec. 30 in his first Big Ten game.

The Terrapins have another big body who is productive in 6-9 senior Jake Layman, who recorded his third double-double with 16 points and 10 assists Sunday.

"He listened to the coaches, he drove the ball, he got to the rim, got to the foul line and he really defended and rebounded," Turgeon said. "We have so much confidence in him defensively, it's amazing what he's doing."

Layman totaled 25 points last season as the Terrapins (19-3, 8-2) swept Nebraska in the first two meetings between the schools.

Maryland star Melo Trimble had 47 points in those games, getting to the line 21 times. The Terrapins needed nearly all of his production as they won those matchups by a total of seven points.

"We played Maryland tough, we've got 'em at home," Miles said. "Hope we have a great crowd and find a way to beat another top-five team."

Shavon Shields starred against the Terps last season with 39 points and 12 rebounds. He scored 16 in 23 minutes before fouling out Saturday in trying to help contain Hammons.

Shields averages 15.8 points to rank second on the team behind Andrew White III (17.0 ppg), who has also been hampered by foul trouble recently while being called upon to guard post players. The 6-foot-7 guard fouled out in 19 minutes Jan. 20 against then-No. 11 Michigan State and finished with 18 points and four fouls against the Boilermakers.

Preview: Wildcats (13-8) at Jayhawks (17-4)
      Date: February 03, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

It's been more than three weeks since Kansas won back-to-back games.

Considering how dominant the No. 7 Jayhawks have been at home, especially against a Kansas State team that hasn't won a Big 12 road game in more than a year, there's a good chance it will happen again in Wednesday night's latest installment of the Sunflower Showdown.

Kansas (17-4, 5-3) has alternated wins and losses in the six contests that followed a 13-game winning streak. It's not a coincidence the three latest victories came at Allen Fieldhouse, where the Jayhawks have won 35 straight following a 90-84 overtime victory against then-No. 20 Kentucky on Saturday.

'This was a good step in the right direction," said guard Wayne Selden Jr., who shot 12 of 20 and finished with a career-high 33 points.

The Jayhawks' run at "The Phog" began with an 86-60 win over then-No. 25 Kansas State on Jan. 11, 2014. Though Kansas players and coaches felt the brunt of those Wildcat fans who rushed the floor to celebrate victories in the last two meetings at Manhattan, the Jayhawks have won 20 of 21 at home in the series. They've won the last nine at Allen Fieldhouse by an average of 19.3 points.

"Our guys know the rivalry," Kansas coach Bill Self said. "We know it's a big game to people in the state and certainly to our fan base and their fan base and the players as well. So we'll look forward to playing.

"We'll get a great effort from them. We know that."

Perhaps, but it might not be good enough.

Kansas State (13-8, 2-6) has dropped 11 straight Big 12 road games dating to an overtime win at then-No. 16 Oklahoma on Jan. 10 of last year - its longest such slide since losing 21 in a row to span the 2002-04 league seasons. The Wildcats came close to ending that skid with a three-point loss at Texas on Jan. 5 and a double-overtime defeat to then-No. 13 Baylor on Jan. 20.

However, they shot a season-low 35.1 percent and went 1 for 18 from 3-point range in last Tuesday's 70-55 loss at then-No. 9 West Virginia.

Kansas State regained some confidence by bouncing back with Saturday's 69-64 win over Mississippi.

"I think we should be pretty successful if we keep taking these steps in the right direction," guard Wesley Iwundu said.

The Wildcats can start by containing Selden, who has averaged 21.6 points and shot 16 of 30 from beyond the arc in the last five at home. The junior's stellar effort Saturday pushed him over the 1,000-point mark.

'I've been here for a while. It was going to happen eventually,' he said. 'I'm excited about it. It's an honor.'

Selden's totaled nine points and missed all six 3-point attempts in two games at Kansas State, but he's scored 34 while going 6 of 11 from long range in two matchups at home.

Iwundu averages a team-leading 12.2 points, but 5.3 in four games against the Jayhawks.

Freshman backcourt mate Kamau Stokes (9.4 ppg) could miss this contest with a knee injury.

Kansas State has allowed an average of 79.7 points while going 0-6 against Top 25 opponents this season.

Preview: Salukis (18-5) at Shockers (16-5)
        Date: February 03, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

Thanks in part to Wichita State's lengthy dominance within the Missouri Valley Conference, Gregg Marshall is on the verge of becoming the winningest coach in school history.

He'll look to set the mark Wednesday night when the No. 21 Shockers try for a 12th consecutive victory and continue their success over visiting Southern Illinois.

In nine seasons at Wichita State (16-5, 10-0), Marshall is 220-81 and won at least 30 games in each of the past three. Perhaps most impressive, is his 122-50 mark against MVC opponents.

The Shockers have won 49 of the last 51 such contests, including 18 straight in the regular season. They've allowed 52.1 points per contest while winning 23 consecutive league home games by an average of 19.4.

Marshall can make history on his home floor after tying Hall of Famer Ralph Miller's school mark with Sunday's 78-65 victory at Evansville.

"That would be an honor," Marshall said of breaking the record held by Miller, who coached at Wichita from 1951-64.

Marshall's players certainly believe he's worthy of the honor.

"He's just a special individual," said star guard Fred VanVleet, who scored a career-high 32 and become the first Shocker since 1963 to go 15 of 15 from the free-throw line Sunday.

"He's just a winner. A super competitor. Outspoken, high energy," VanVleet added. "He's a guy that's always revved up and ready to go. He brings it every day. He's really just a basketball coach and obviously he's pretty good at it."

Marshall might have done some of his best coaching this season.

The Shockers opened ranked 10th but dropped out of the poll after losing four of six, including all three at the Advocare Invitational while VanVleet (13.4 points, 5.3 assists per game) sat with a hamstring injury. With VanVleet healthy, they've won 14 of 15 - losing only at Seton Hall in overtime Dec. 19 - and returned to the Top 25 last week following an eight-week absence.

That run appears likely to continue against Southern Illinois (18-5, 7-3), which is tied for second in the MVC but has dropped 12 of 14 to the Shockers. It has averaged 59 points while losing the last six meetings by an average of 16. The Salukis shot 37 percent, went 1 of 11 from 3-point range, were outrebounded 40-25 and committed 17 turnovers while Ron Baker (14.4 points) scored 18 and VanVleet added 12 rebounds with six assists to help Wichita to an 83-58 rout Jan. 9.

After holding MVC scoring leader D.J. Balentine to a season-worst 5-of-19 shooting effort and just under his 21.2 average with 18 on Sunday, Wichita State gets another chance to contain SIU senior Anthony Beane (19.6). The league's second-highest scorer, Beane had 15 points but went 3 of 14 from the field against Wichita last month.

The Salukis have dropped back-to-back games for the first time after falling 85-78 to Evansville in overtime Thursday then shooting 38.7 percent while matching a season-low point total in their first road defeat, 67-58 at Northern Iowa three days later.

"If we continue to do what we did (Sunday), we're going to destroy all the things we've worked for to get to this point," coach Barry Hinson said. "If this is not a wakeup call for us, then we're going to have issues."

The Salukis have lost 15 straight against ranked opponents since beating then-No. 14 Drake on Feb. 13, 2008.

Preview: Wildcats (17-5) at Cougars (9-12)
          Date: February 03, 2016 10:00 PM EDT

A rare home loss led to Arizona dropping five places in this week's rankings and moved it closer to falling out of the Top 25 for the first time in nearly four years.

Given the way the Wildcats have played on the road, being an unranked team next week looks like a very good possibility.

Arizona opens a two-game swing through the Pacific Northwest on Wednesday night when it takes on a Washington State team that sits last in the Pac-12.

The Wildcats climbed to No. 7 in the poll after a 94-82 win at Arizona State in their conference opener Jan. 3. That moved Arizona to 13-1, but its struggles then began.

Back-to-back road losses to UCLA and Southern California followed before the Wildcats briefly turned things around with three straight wins. Another road defeat came next to California, and then the Wildcats had the nation's longest home winning streak snapped at 49 with an 83-75 loss to then-No. 23 Oregon on Thursday.

Arizona (17-5, 5-4) bounced back to beat visiting Oregon State 80-63 on Saturday, but it fell to No. 23 in the nation Monday. The Wildcats have been in 72 consecutive polls since not being ranked in the final one of 2011-12, the second-longest active run behind Kansas (136) after Duke dropped out this week.

They are 3-3 in true road games after going 23-10 over the last three seasons.

"I know this. We've played five (conference) games away from home, we're about ready to play seven of our first 11 away from home," said coach Sean Miller, whose team visits Washington on Saturday. "The schedule is going to flip to our advantage. ... We want to play our best basketball near the end of the year, and here we are."

Saturday's win came after Miller ripped into the Wildcats following the loss to the Ducks, saying "I've never been more down looking at a team I've coached than the one I just saw."

Gabe York set career bests with 24 points and six 3-pointers while grabbing a season high-tying seven rebounds, and fellow senior Ryan Anderson had his 10th double-double with 13 points and 12 boards.

'Coach challenged all of us,' York said. 'I'm not speaking for everybody, but for me I took that to heart. I took it upon myself that I need to be a better captain, a better leader and tonight my teammates found me.'

Six Wildcats scored in double figures in a 90-66 rout of visiting Washington State (9-12, 1-8) on Jan. 16. That's part of a seven-game losing streak for the Cougars, who have dropped nine in a row in this series.

Washington State's woes continued with an 80-53 loss at UCLA on Saturday. The Cougars set season lows in points and field-goal percentage (33.3) and had 18 turnovers in their most lopsided defeat of 2015-16.

'We could have lived with the turnovers if we were able to knock down shots,' coach Ernie Kent said.

Junior forward Josh Hawkinson leads Washington State with an average of 16.0 points and tops the conference with 10.7 rebounds per game and 15 double-doubles.

              Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Tennessee 84, Kentucky 77-- Wildcats are 2-4 in last six road games.

-- Indiana 80, Michigan 67-- Hoosiers had 25-0 run in first half. 25-nil.

-- New Mexico 87, UNLV 83-- Rebels were 12-26 on arc, still got beat.

-- DePaul 77, Providence 70-- Bentil got hurt; Friars aren't very deep.

-- Duke 80, Georgia Tech 71-- Krzyzewski was ill, didn't make the trip.

-- Clemson 76, Wake Forest 62-- Tigers are building a case to be in Field of 68.

              **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Looking at some college basketball.....

              13) Mid-American Conference-- Everyone has 2+ losses already; #78 Akron is only MAC team ranked above #138 in country- their coach Keith Dambrot was high school coach, where he coached Lebron James. MAC has been a one-bid league 14 years in a row- their last NCAA tourney wins were by Ohio U in 2012. .

              12) Missouri Valley-- Wichita State had injury problems in November; they've got no such problems now, are 10-0 in Valley. . Southern Illinois has had a resurgence, while Northern Iowa has regressed. Last three years, MVC teams are 4-1 in first round of the NCAA tournament.

              11) West Coast-- Since 2003, WCC is 20-23 in NCAAs; Gonzaga is 14-12, rest of league is 6-11. Gonzaga/St Mary's, followed by BYU. I'm writing this on Groundhog Day, so it seems fitting- this league is same every year. Pepperdine has made strides; rest of this league stinks.

              10) Mountain West-- San Diego State, then everyone else; UNLV is 4-6 despite being favored in nine of ten games. Last four years, league is 6-12 in NCAAs, with Aztecs in 2014 only team to make Sweet 16. No guarantee this league gets more than one team in NCAAs this year; if San Diego State wins conference tourney, no way they do.

              9) Colonial-- Four teams within game of first place; four teams tied for first place LY. VCU/George Mason made Final Four from CAA in last decade, but both defected to A-14. This year, CAA is #9 conference; if that holds, it'll be their best rating in last 13 years-- last three years, CAA is 0-3 in NCAAs, losing by 21-15-4 points.

              8) Atlantic 14-- VCU/Dayton/St Joe's look good for NCAAs; Rhode Island has been decimated by injuries. Still think 14 teams is too many for one league, but then again, no one asked me. From 2011-13, A-14 was 9-3 in first round games; last two years, they were 2-6, plus Dayton's play-in win (at home).

              7) American-- SMU is 19-2 but is ineligible for postseason; four teams are tied for second with three conference losses. UConn/Cincinnati should get to NCAAs even if they lose conference tourney. League is 10-4 in NCAAs in its first two years, with UConn winning national title two years ago.

              6) SEC-- Kentucky is 2-4 on SEC road; its hard to totally rebuild your squad every year with freshmen who think they should be in the NBA. Texas A&M is est team in SEC now; Vandy/LSU seem to be best teams who are on bubble. South Carolina has hardest part of its schedule ahead. SEC teams are 19-5 in first three rounds of NCAA's the last three years; five of ten teams made Elite 8, three made Final Four.

              5) Big 14-- From 2011-14, this league was #1 in Ken Pom ratings every year; LY they were #4, now #5. Ohio State-Wisconsin-Illinois have regressed, Minnesota has fallen off the face of the earth, Iowa has its best team in years, with four seniors starting. Last six years, league is 28-10 in first round games, 17-11 in second round, 9-9 in third round, 6-3 in regional finals, but no national titles.

              4) Big East- I'm not going to rant on goegraphy here, but I should. Midwest teams are dragging league down this year, them and St John's, which is basically an expansion team. How are teams in Chicago/NYC the worst teams in this league? Refigured Big East is 6-4 in first round games last two years; they were 8-8 the last two years prior to realignment.

              3) Pac-12-- Weirdest of seasons in college basketball; no great teams, none. Oregon is 7-2, four other teams are 6-3. UCLA is tied for 7th. Andy Enfield has USC tied for 2nd, Arizona has been wracked by injuries. Ben Howland got UCLA to three straight NCAAs in 2006-08; no Pac-12 team has been in Final Four since then. Since 2003, Arizona is 5-8 on second weekend of NCAAs, with no Final Fours.

              2) ACC-- Is it my imagination, or are lot less of these games on TV than there used to be? We see more SEC/Big 14/Big X now. Duke is 5-4 in ACC, a down year for them; North Carolina seems like best team. Last three years, ACC won 14 of 16 first round games, 8-6 in second round, 4-4 in third round, 1-3 in regional finals. Last year's Duke team was ACC's first Final Four team since 2010.

              1) Big X-- This league is really good this year, really tough, no easy outs. I feel bad for the West Virginia kids, who got sold out by the athletic department because of money involved with football. Shortest road trip in conference for West Virginia is 700 miles to Ames, Iowa. Last three years, Big X is just 8-10 in first round NCAA games.

They'll be facing a rude host, one that is 11-0 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena (6-3 ATS), including 5-0 in Big Ten play, winning by double digits each time (12.2 margin of victory). The Wildcats are 1-5 on the road this season, but are actually 4-1-1 against the number. The Shockers have started 10-0 in Missouri Valley play and come off an impressive 78-65 win at Evansville, considered by most to be the second-best team in the conference. Wichita State avenged its only non-cover in MVC play against the Aces, improving to 9-1 against the number in league play. WSU is looking for a season sweep of the Salukis, currently tied for second in the Valley at 7-3. It dominated SIU 83-58 on Jan. 9 in front of a sellout crowd in Carbondale. The Salukis have lost consecutive games for the first time all season. The over is 5-2 through the last seven games for both schools.

                        (23) Arizona at Washington State (Pac-12, 10:00 p.m. ET)

After suffering consecutive losses to Cal and Oregon, the latter snapping a 49-game home winning streak, the 'Cats put together an impressive second half in dismantling Oregon State 80-63 on Saturday. Sniper Gabe York hit a career-high six 3-pointers and scored 24 points. Sean Miller's team is only one game above .500 in Pac-12 play, but will have just three road games left after this one and has an opportunity to put together a big February. The 'Cats are 3-3 SU and ATS away from home. They beat the Cougars 90-66 in Tucson on Jan. 16 and could get back top scoring guard Allonzo Trier from a broken hand. He's likely to be a game-time decision. The over has prevailed in nine of Arizona's last 11 games, including the first meeting between these teams. Washington State ranks last in the Pac-12 in offensive and defensive efficiency.

College basketball betting TV guide: Must-watch, must-wager games

Two of the better teams in the Big Ten face off Saturday when Michigan hosts in-state rival Michigan State.

Wednesday: Notre Dame at Miami Florida
Where to watch: espn2, 7:00 PM ET

Notre Dame is 5-1 SU during their last six games, but the Irish have played an extremely easy schedule over that span. Four of their six games were also on their home court. Miami Florida returns home off a terrible road loss at NC State on Saturday, so the Hurricanes will be looking to bounce back in this game.

                            Thursday: Texas A&M at Vanderbilt
Where to watch: espn2, 7:00 PM ET

Texas A&M got a big out of conference win at home on Saturday when they beat Iowa State 72-62. The Aggies are 11-1 SU over their last twelve games with their lone loss coming by just 3 points at Arkansas. Vanderbilt has been two different teams this season; the Commodores have been terrible on the road (3-7) and excellent at home (9-2). Only three of their last eight games have been at home, so expect a strong effort in this game.

                            Friday: Harvard at Princeton
Where to watch: ESPNU, 7:00 PM ET

These were the two best teams in the Ivy League for years, but that’s not the case this season. Harvard is just 9-11 SU on the season, and they come in on a 3-game losing streak. The Crimson are just 2-7 in true road games as well. Princeton is 12-5 SU on the season, and all five of their losses have come away from home. The Tigers have played 10 of their last 13 games on the road, so they’ll welcome a home game with open arms on Friday night.

                            Saturday: Michigan State at Michigan
Where to watch: CBS, 2:00 PM ET

Michigan State and Michigan are two of the better teams in the Big 10, so this should be a highly competitive game on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans were expected to be good, so they are a known commodity. But the jury is still out on Michigan because they’ve played a very easy schedule so far this season, especially in conference play. The Wolverines will be out to prove themselves in this game against their in-state rival.

                            Sunday: Utah at Oregon
Where to watch: espn2, 4:00 PM ET

Utah will look to avenge an earlier season 77-59 home loss to Oregon. The Utes were dominated in both halves in that game, so they’ll need a much different game plan in the rematch. Oregon is one of the hottest teams in college basketball right now; the Ducks are 11-2 SU in their last 13 games going into Thursday’s game against Colorado. Oregon is also 13-0 at home going into this week, so Utah has a huge challenge ahead of them.

                            Monday: Louisville at Duke
Where to watch: ESPN, 7:00 PM ET

Louisville just beat North Carolina at home, but now they’ll have to play Duke on the road. The Cardinals are a young and inexperienced team, so that win may stay with them for awhile. Louisville will host Boston College prior to this game, so monitor that result. Duke has been struggling mightily, but maybe three straight home games with Louisville in the middle will cure what ails them.

                            Tuesday: West Virginia at Kansas
Where to watch: espn2, 7:00 PM ET

West Virginia caught Kansas at the perfect time in the first meeting, and the Mountaineers took advantage in their 74-63 win. But West Virginia recently suspended one of their best players, Jonathan Holton, so keep an eye on his status. Kansas plays on one of the strongest home courts in all of college basketball, so another West Virginia win will be extremely difficult in this game, especially if Holton is not on the court.

Preview: Aggies (18-3) at Commodores (12-9)
                                Date: February 04, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

As Vanderbilt goes through a season of unmet expectations, Texas A&M continues to exceed its own.

The No. 8 Aggies look to hold on to sole possession of first place in the SEC while the host Commodores try to boost their fading NCAA Tournament hopes Thursday night.

Offensive inconsistency and a challenging schedule have combined to render Vanderbilt (12-9, 4-4), ranked 18th in the preseason Top 25, among the season's biggest disappointments. The Commodores have been especially hurt by an inability to win big games, going 0-5 against ranked teams to continue a trend.

Vanderbilt, 0-13 against Top 25 opponents since upsetting then-No. 1 Kentucky in the 2012 SEC Tournament title game, came up short in another high-profile matchup with Saturday's 72-58 loss at Texas in the Big 12/SEC Challenge. The Commodores trailed by 17 during a 16-point first half and struggled to defend the smaller and quicker Longhorns, who owned a 40-18 advantage in the paint and shot 26 free throws to Vanderbilt's 10.

"I think that was the difference in the game, their ability to draw fouls and capitalize and our inability to draw fouls and not capitalize," Commodores coach Kevin Stallings said.

A leg injury to leading scorer Wade Baldwin IV midway through the first half further damaged Vanderbilt's chances to come back, though the NBA prospect is expected to play Thursday.

The Commodores have lost two of three since winning three straight league games Jan. 12-20 and have shot 39.5 percent over the last five. That doesn't bode well heading into a critical contest with Texas A&M (18-3, 7-1), the conference leader in scoring defense at 64.1 points per game and turnovers forced at 15.9.

The Aggies scored 21 points off 16 Iowa State turnovers and shut down the then-No. 14 Cyclones down the stretch Saturday, going on a 16-4 run over the final 4:04 to earn a 72-62 win for coach Billy Kennedy's 300th victory.

Texas A&M also received a big lift from Danuel House in crunch time, with the senior scoring 12 of his 20 points during the pivotal run.

"He took over, and what was really good with him is he was patient," Kennedy said. "He didn't force anything, he made a big shot and he let us run stuff and get him the ball in the right places. He did a heck of a job being disciplined and being patient and making the right plays."

House has averaged 20.3 points over a three-game stretch in which the Aggies have shot 39.2 percent overall and 27.4 on 3-pointers. They're hitting 40.6 percent on the road compared to 47.5 in other games.

Those struggles could continue as Vanderbilt leads Division I in 3-point percentage defense at 27.5 and has held opponents to 38.1 percent on field goals, tops in the SEC.

The Commodores are 9-2 at Memorial Gym, where the Aggies haven't won in two previous visits as an SEC member.

Texas A&M posted a 69-58 home victory over Vanderbilt on Jan. 31, 2015, shooting 53.2 percent and limiting Damian Jones to seven points and 2 of 11 from the floor.

Jones scored a season-high 26 with nine rebounds against Texas after a 20-point, 12-board effort in a 60-59 win over Florida on Jan. 26.
