Game of the Day: Monday's NBA Playoffs matchups
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Hawks at Brooklyn Nets (+4, 195.5)
    Hawks lead series 2-1

The Brooklyn Nets came out with a purpose in Game 3 and ensured that their first-round Eastern Conference series would make it to at least five games. The eighth-seeded Nets will try to even things up at two games apiece when they host the Atlanta Hawks in Game 4 on Monday.

Brooklyn leaned on Jarrett Jack and Brook Lopez to pull out Game 3 while turning up the pressure on the defensive end. “Just us playing at home,” Nets guard Joe Johnson told reporters. “It gives us extra motivation, that energy boost that we need. Guys really talking, communicating, moving on defense and switching - switching a lot.” The defensive effort keyed on stopping Atlanta sharpshooter Kyle Korver, who went 1-of-8 from the field. Korver missed all five of his 3-point attempts as the Hawks fell to Brooklyn for the first time in seven games this season.

    TRENDS:

*Hawks are 0-5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
*Under is 4-0 in Nets last 4 overall.
*Under is 4-0 in Hawks last 4 overall.
*Underdog is 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings.

Milwaukee Bucks at Chicago Bulls (-8.5, 187.5)
    Bulls lead series 3-1

The Chicago Bulls weren’t able to close the series on the first try and will attempt to do so on the second opportunity when they host the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday. Sixth-seeded Milwaukee salvaged Saturday’s Game 4 on Jerryd Bayless’ last-second basket to halt a nine-game playoff losing streak and keep the Eastern Conference first-round series going.

Bayless eluded the defense of Derrick Rose to haul in Jared Dudley’s stellar inbounds pass and score the winning hoop in a 92-90 victory over the third-seeded Bulls that ranked highly important to Milwaukee. “As a whole, we have a long ways to go,” Bucks coach Jason Kidd told reporters. “But I thought with this being a character game, the group in that locker room showed a lot of character by finding a way to get a win.” Rose has had a strong series but turned the ball over late and then apparently lost his focus with the game on the line. “When you give up a layup for the game-winner, it’s hard,” Rose told reporters. “But I’m happy that I have the teammates I have, the coaching staff I have. I really believe I’m built for this.”

    TRENDS:

*Bulls are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
*Home team is 6-1 ATS in the last 7 meetings.
*Bucks are 2-8 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
*Over is 4-1 in Bucks last 5 road games.

Memphis Grizzlies at Portland Trail Blazers (-2, 193)
    Grizzlies lead series 3-0

    TRENDS:

*Grizzlies are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
*Grizzlies are 11-1 ATS in the last 12 meetings.
*Under is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.
*Over is 7-2 in Grizzlies last 9 road games.

NBA roundup: Cavs, Wizards complete sweeps

BOSTON -- The Cleveland Cavaliers completed their four-game first-round sweep of the Boston Celtics with a 101-93 victory Sunday but also sustained a potentially devastating loss of forward Kevin Love with an injured left shoulder.

ESPN reported Love sustained a dislocated shoulder in the first physical event of a physical day that also saw Cleveland guard J.R. Smith ejected for smacking and injuring Boston forward Jae Crowder in the third quarter -- after Crowder had been flattened by center Kendrick Perkins in the first half. Love reportedly will be out at least two weeks.

Love was injured with 5:22 left in the first quarter of the game that ended Boston's season and sent the second-seeded Cavs into the Eastern Conference semifinals against the winner of the Chicago Bulls-Milwaukee Bucks series.

Forward LeBron James scored 27 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out eight assists as the Cavs built a 21-point halftime lead and held off a Boston charge that brought the Celtics as close as eight early in the fourth quarter. Cleveland guard Kyrie Irving added 24 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Isaiah Thomas led Boston with 21 points and nine assists.

      Wizards 125, Raptors 94

WASHINGTON -- Guard Bradley Beal scored 23 points, and center Marcin Gortat added 21 points and 11 rebounds as Washington destroyed Toronto to finish off a 4-0 sweep of the teams' first-round Eastern Conference playoff series.

Guard John Wall contributed 14 points and 10 assists for the Wizards, who led by at least 14 points after every quarter and by as many as 37 in the second half thanks to a 3-point shooting barrage. Seven players for scored in double figures as Washington posted its highest point total for a regulation game this season.

Toronto got 21 points from guard Kyle Lowry.

Washington never previously swept a best-of-five or best-of-seven series in franchise history. The fifth-seeded Wizards will face the winner of the Atlanta Hawks-Brooklyn Nets series.

      Clippers 114, Spurs 105

SAN ANTONIO -- Guard Chris Paul scored 34 points, and forward Blake Griffin added 20 along with 19 rebounds as Los Angeles defeated San Antonio to even their teams' Western Conference first-round series at 2-2.

Griffin and Paul picked up seven assists each. Guard J.J. Redick supplemented the two Clippers stars with 17 points. The Clippers received scoring help from a pair of reserve guards. Austin Rivers scored 16 -- converting seven of eight from the field -- and Jamal Crawford had 15. Rivers and Crawford scored five apiece early in the fourth quarter, when the Clippers forged ahead by 13 points.

Forward Kawhi Leonard led San Antonio with 26 points. Forward Tim Duncan produced 22 points and 14 rebounds, and guard Tony Parker scored 18, but Duncan and Parker missed four free throws apiece.

      Mavericks 121, Rockets 109

DALLAS -- The starting backcourt of Monta Ellis and J.J. Barea combined for 48 points, and Dallas staved off elimination by blasting Houston. The Rockets still lead the series 3-1, and they are in position to close out the best-of-seven Tuesday back in Houston.

Ellis backed up a 34-point performance Friday with 31 points on 13-of-21 shooting two nights later. Barea, starting for the first time in the series, provided the kind of effort that Dallas hoped to get from banished point guard Rajon Rondo. Barea scored 17 points -- 12 in the first half -- and dished out 13 assists.

Houston guard James Harden scored a team-high 24 points, but he didn't have near the impact he made while going off for 42 points in Game 3.

            Monday's NBA Essentials

            April 27, 2015

            Hawks at Nets – 8:05 p.m. ET
There’s certainly some pressure on the Eastern Conference’s top seed here, since the Wizards are already resting and waiting on the Hawks to reach the conference semis. After barely surviving Game 2 at home, Atlanta was barely ever in Game 3, falling behind 31-16 after a quarter, failing to find their shooting touch in Brooklyn. The Hawks shot 32-for-90 from the field (35.6 pct) and 6-for-30 (20 pct.) from 3-point range. Top 3-point shooter Kyle Korver saw his streak of consecutive playoff games with three 3-pointers end at seven, finishing 0-for-5 from beyond the arc. Backcourt mate Jeff Teague went 0-for-3 from 3-points range and 4-for-13 overall, while key backup Dennis Schroder shot 1-for-9.

It was a forgettable performance for everyone but starting forwards DeMarre Carroll and Paul Millsap, who combined for just 40 points on 16-for-30 shooting, adding 23 rebounds and six steals. Both have been the most consistent players in this series, but All-Star center Al Horford has struggled mightily, shooting just 36 percent in averaging just 10.3 points with his 10.3 rebounds. He had been shooting nearly 62 percent and averaging 17.5 points in April prior to this series beginning.

The Hawks opened -1500 to avoid the 1-8 upset in this series according to Sportsbook.ag. and are still at -1800 up 2-1 despite Saturday’s loss. Atlanta had won all five meetings against the Nets this season prior to Game 3.

VegasInsider expert Chris David: "Based on what we’ve seen from the Hawks this season, I expect them to rebound in Game 4 at Brooklyn on Tuesday. Atlanta has gone 15-7 off a loss this season and two of those setbacks came in the latter part of the season when the club already clinched the top seed in the East. Bettors should also make a note that the Nets are 0-4 in their last four games off a win and coincidentally two of those losses came to the Hawks in Atlanta on Apr. 4 (131-99) and Apr. 8 (114-11) at home. The ‘over’ easily cashed in both those games as Brooklyn couldn’t slow down Atlanta offensively in either matchup. Knowing that the Wizards have already advanced, I’d like to believe that the Hawks will have a greater sense of urgency for the Nets in the fourth installment."

Four consecutive Hawks games have gone under the posted total, their second-longest such streak of the season. From Feb. 11-28 they had a run of six straight, winning four of those games outright.

The Nets wasted no time getting comfortable at home, building a 16-5 lead as both Deron Williams and Bojan Bogdanovic hit early 3-pointers. Despite Joe Johnson shooting just 5-for-17 and the Hawks holding substantial advantages in points in the paint (50-30) and on fast breaks (25-2), Brooklyn’s largest deficit was just four points late in the third quarter and it trailed for less than three minutes of the entire game. Brook Lopez led the way with 22 points and 13 rebounds, while Thaddeus Young added 18 and 11 boards. It’s obvious that their efforts around the rim are the key to hanging around in the series. Williams, who has been Brooklyn’s goat in the series, shot just 1-for-8 from the field, while backup Jarrett Jack, who had averaged 18 points in the two losses in Atlanta, took just three shots but did wind up with a team-high eight assists. It’s become obvious he’s become the Nets most reliable guard in this series.

Brooklyn opened at +800 to win the series according to Sportsbook.ag., and can now be had a +1000 if you believe they’ve figured something out. The under is 6-0-1 in the last seven Nets games.

            Bucks at Bulls – 8:05 p.m. ET

The Bucks staved off elimination when Jerryd Bayless came through on a tricky game-winning layup after Bulls star Derrick Rose fell asleep in his coverage and allowed a catch right at the rim with just over a second remaining. Milwaukee had blown a 90-84 lead with under two minutes remaining and were staring a second consecutive OT game in the face before a Rose turnover and a smart timeout from head coach Jason Kidd helped set up the late heroics that game them life in the series. Both games in Milwaukee were there to be had for the young Bucks, who hung in games with their boundless energy. They wound up with an 87-68 edge in field goal attempts in Game 3 thanks to 26 Chicago turnovers, a testament to how effective they were in forcing sloppy play. O.J. Mayo led the Bucks with 18 points off the bench and has been a strong presence late in games as one of the few Milwaukee players who isn’t scared of having the ball in his hands late in games. Khris Middleton has been in double-figures in all four games, averaging 17.0 points and 3.8 boards in the series, but he was just 4-for-15 on Saturday, shooting 1-for-6 from 3-point range.

That the Bucks overcame that to steal a game inspires confidence that they might be able to stay alive another night if he finds the range in Chicago. Milwaukee opened at +500 to win the series according to Sportsbook.ag and is now available at +1600 as it chases a 3-1 deficit.

It could have gone much worse for the Bulls less than 100 miles from home from home in Milwaukee, but saw an abundance of their fans find tickets, helping the team manage a split of their first two postseason road games. With Cleveland already through after its sweep of the Celtics, there’s pressure for Chicago to wrap things up so it can begin preparations for an epic East semifinal clash against its Central Division rivals. Rose has been excellent thus far, averaging 21.5 points and 7.5 assists while playing an average of 38 minutes. His 48-minute stint in last Thursday’s double-OT win was his longest in years, further alleviating concerns that he won’t get to 100 percent this postseason. He looks like his old self and has improved his shooting, sitting at 12-for-26 from 3-point range in the series.

As effective as he’s been, former Marquette standout Jimmy Butler has been the best player in the series. Butler averaged 28 points through the first two games in Chicago, shooting 18-for-33 (55 percent). He played 53 minutes Game 3, scoring 24 points, and followed that up by shooting 12-for-17 in Saturday’s loss, winding up with 33 points, including a 5-for-7 clip from 3-point range. Nikola Mirotic returned from a one-game absence due to a strained quad, but shot just 2-for-7 from the field, lowering his field-goal percentage to 33 percent in the series. Pau Gasol is averaging 13.5 points and 13.3 rebounds, posting double-doubles in all four games.

The Bulls opened -750 to claim this series according to Sportsbook.ag. and are now -4000 as they seek the series clincher. The Game 4 loss snapped Chicago’s seven-game winning streak, which had included a 6-1 mark ATS. The zig-zag theory has worked very nicely in the series on totals, since the over and under have alternated coming in through each of the first four games.

Grizzlies at Trail Blazers – 10:35 p.m. ET
Mike Conley flew back to Memphis following a nasty facial laceration suffered in Game 3, so the Grizzlies will be short-handed here. The blow is softened some by Beno Udrih returning after missing Game 3 with an ankle sprain, so don’t be surprised to see him in the starting lineup. Due to the absences of Conley and Udrih, backup guard Nick Calathes was counted on for 27 key minutes, finishing with 13 points and three assists in serving a critical role as a glue guy.

The offense ended up running mostly through Marc Gasol, who dominated by getting to the free-throw line 14 times, scoring 25 points despite 6-for-17 shooting. Courtney Lee added 20 points on 5-for-8 shooting and made all nine of his free-throws, continuing to shine as the top x-factor in the series with his strong offense and impressive perimeter defense. Zach Randolph only grabbed four rebounds on Saturday night, so look for him to make a concerted effort to be more active on the boards.

Sportsbook.ag had Memphis at -165 to win this series. The Grizzlies have covered in six consecutive contests and seen unders come in four times in those games.

LaMarcus Aldridge and Damian Lillard continued to disappoint in the 115-109 Game 3 loss, combining for 15-for-35 shooting. It was actually their best performance of the series, which lets you know how effective the Memphis defense has been in shutting down Portland’s All-Star duo. Aldridge has found the going against Gasol and Randolph particularly tough, since his 6-for-18 shooting on Saturday dropped him to 26-for-72 (36 pct) for the series, providing a nagging reminder that he hasn’t been at 100 percent for a long time due to a nagging thumb injury.

Lillard had his best game, finishing with 22 points and nine assists, but VI’s David doesn’t mince words in assessing his performance thus far. “In this year’s playoffs, there have been five teams facing 3-0 deficits at home and only the Bucks and Mavericks were able to force a Game 5. With that being said, I believe Portland will put forth a better effort on Monday but still fall to a short-handed Memphis squad. The key to the Trail Blazers is Lillard, who has been exposed in this series against so-called inferior players. He’s not producing in key spots and Memphis has defeated him with backups. Due to his lack of scoring, I’d lean to the ‘under’ in Game 4 despite the two teams combining for 224 points on Saturday. More than 25 percent of those points (65) came from the free throw line and I don’t expect that to happen again. Memphis still likes to play slow and its defense has given Portland fits in this series.”

The Blazers opened at +140 at Sportsbook.ag. to pull the upset in the series, but those tickets look relatively useless at the moment. The Trail Blazers are 0-7 SU/ATS since April 9.

If it is true that the Rangers will only pay Hamilton $5M a year, that means the Angels are paying Hamilton $20.4M this year and $54.8M over the next two years to play against them!!! That must go over great in the Anaheim clubhouse.

              11) Golfer Mikko Ilonen should buy Phil Mickelson a nice Christmas present this year; Lefty dropped out of the Match Play tournament this week, which means Ilonen gets in-- even if he loses in the first round, Ilonen bags a check for $50,000 or so.

              10) According to college football expert Phil Steele, Washington Huskies will play the hardest schedule this fall; U-Dub's opponents had a 101-56 record last fall- they play at Boise State Labor Day weekend.

              9) Next time Alex Rodriguez hits a homer, he ties Willie Mays with 660 in his career and banks a checks for $6M, but his employers are trying to cheap out and not play the $6M, since they can't cash in on ARod's milestone (buy your own commemorative bat for $299.95!!!!) due to his steroid history.

              8) Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas closes down for good this Monday, the end of an era, but it is sold out this weekend, with the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight a big ticket in town. Lot of the older casinos in Vegas are slowly going away.

              7) There is a beer sold at my local grocery store called Arrogant Bastard Ale; I'm not much of a drinker, but thats a tremendous name.

              6) The 2011 San Diego Padres had eight relief pitchers for most of the year; five of those eight guys are now relievers for the surprisingly good Astros.

              5) Why teams lose: when the Seahawks took Russell Wilson with the 75th pick in the 2012 Draft, Jacksonvile took a freakin' punter five picks earlier. Why does a team draft a punter in the third round?

              4) There have been a total of 73 runs scored in Bud Norris' four starts, with Orioles 2-2, outscored 37-36. In Chris Archer's last four starts, there were a total of only fifteen runs scored- Archer allowed one run in his last 26.2 IP.

              3) Boston has pitching problems; Buchholz/Porcello have at least finished the sixth inning in six of their eight starts, but the other three starters finished six innings only two times in nine starts- that creates too much of a strain on their bullpen. Boston has to trade for a quality starter and soon.

              2) Both the shortstops on my fantasy team got hurt last night; Jose Reyes has been hurt, but finally went on the DL- he has a broken rib but had been trying to play thru it, not batting lefty because it hurt too much.

Jed Lowrie hurt his thumb sliding into home (why can't anyone slide??); he is flying back to Houston today for an MRI, which sounds ominous. Waiver wire in our 16-team keeper league is amazingly weak at shortstop. Oy.

              1) Trevor Bauer pitches against the Royals tonight; last night, he had boxing gloves on (real ones) in the dugout during the game, a reference to the issues Kansas City has been having with other teams this month.

Game of the Day: Tuesday's NBA Playoffs matchups
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dallas Mavericks at Houston Rockets (-7, 222)

                  Rockets lead series 3-1

Raymond Felton got the first chance to start in place of Rondo at the point in Game 3 but Carlisle decided to go with more energy in Game 4 and pushed Barea into the first unit. The veteran responded with 17 points and 13 assists in 36 minutes. “I'm trying to push it every time," Barea told reporters. “I'm trying to be aggressive and my teammates, people around me are ballin'. I'm just trying to attack and do my job. If I do my job and I create problems for their defense, then I think everybody else plays a lot looser and more open.”

Houston missed 17 straight shots in a 10-minute span that bridged the half and never recovered in Game 4. “We got slow offensively, the ball stuck,” Rockets coach Kevin McHale told reporters. “We didn’t do very well for that stretch. All that being said, it was our offensive rebounding and our lack of being able to contain the ball that ended up beating us. Our offense sucked for a while. That was a fatal blow, more of our effort overall I think.” MVP candidate James Harden went 1-of-7 from 3-point range in the loss while handing out a series-low five assists.

LINE HISTORY: The Rockets opened as 6-point favorites, while the total opened at 222.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Over is 8-1 in Rockets last nine home games.
                  * Mavericks are 0-4 ATS in the last four meetings in Houston.
                  * Rockets are 7-1 ATS in their last eight Conference Quarterfinals games.
                  * Over is 9-1 in Mavericks last 10 vs. Western Conference.

San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Clippers (-2, 205)

                  Series tied 2-2

Coach Gregg Popovich was highly disappointed with his club’s Game 4 performance, particularly when you factor in the important of the game. “In general, we lacked a lot of discipline,” Popovich told reporters. “We didn’t execute sharply enough in what we wanted to do strategy-wise or just in general basketball play. I’m just more disappointed in the lack of focus than anything else, and not being as sharp in a lot of situations.” Small forward Kahwi Leonard continued his strong play with 26 points, seven rebounds and five assists and is averaging 24.8 points in the series.

Though Chris Paul had a huge game and power forward Blake Griffin stood out with 20 points and 19 rebounds, backup guard Austin Rivers might have provided the biggest impact with 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting. Rivers has been much-maligned throughout his three-year NBA career and the criticism has increased since he joined the club coached by father Doc Rivers. “This is something I know I can do,” Rivers told reporters. “It wasn’t a surprise for me. Obviously it is to you guys but I’ve been working so hard and this team has been working so hard.”

LINE HISTORY: The Clippers opened as 2-point home faves while the total opened at 205.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Over is 9-4 in the last 13 meetings.

NBA roundup: Nets even series with Hawks

NEW YORK -- Rookie guard Bojan Bogdanovic hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 85 seconds left in overtime, and the Brooklyn Nets evened their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series with a 120-115 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Monday.

The best-of-seven series is tied at two games apiece heading to Game 5 on Wednesday in Atlanta. The Washington Wizards, who swept their first-round series against the Toronto Raptors, await the Hawks-Nets winner.

Forward DeMarre Carroll and guard Jeff Teague led Atlanta with 20 points apiece.

                      Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Six of the more interesting first round matches in the golf tournament today:

-- Justin Rose (-$240) vs Marc Leishman-- Rose is off win in New Orleans.

-- Jason Day (-$200) vs Charley Hoffman-- Day is 14-3 in this event.

-- Jordan Spieth (-$325) vs Mikko Ilonen-- Ilonen got in when Lefty withdrew.

-- Rory McIlroy (-$260) vs Jason Dufner-- Tough first round match, no?

-- Bubba Watson (-$210) vs M.A Jimenez-- Interesting pair of characters here.

-- Henrik Stenson (-$240) vs John Senden- Stenson has won this event.

                      **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Random mid-week stuff.......

                      13) Another baseball game was cancelled at Camden Yards Tuesday due to the rioting/curfew in Baltimore. Wednesday's game is at 2pm and will be the first big league game ever played with no fans.

Baltimore's weekend series against Tampa Bay has been moved to the Trop; the Orioles will be the "home team" for those games.

                      12) Rockets 103, Mavericks 94-- Houston advances to second round for first time since 2009. Enjoyed listening to Chris Webber on this game, talking about how improved foul shooting is the product of one thing-- good practice.

                      11) Spurs 111, Clippers 107-- Speaking of which, DeAndre Jordan was 7-16 on the foul line and this led directly to San Antonio grabbing a 3-2 series lead. Asked a few people who coached last night if they would foul on purpose if they were in Spurs' shoes- when million$ of dollar$ are at $take, the an$wer i$ ye$. You find an opponents' weakness, you exploit it.

                      10) Match Play tournament starts today; since 1999, the average seed of the winner has been 19.6; Brooks Koepka is #19, Kevin Na #20.

                      9) Blue Jays 11, Red Sox 8-- Boston allowed 34 runs in its last three games, as the price tag for Hamels/Kazmir, even Bud Norris keeps going up. Boston's five starting pitchers have an ERA of over 6.00, worst in major leagues.

                      8) Speaking of which, Masahiro Tanaka is on the DL, as trends point to him needing Tommy John surgery. Forearm strains are often a precursor to issues with the UCL, which is what just sidelined Brandon McCarthy for the season.

                      7) Senator from Vermont named Bernie Sanders is running for President; never heard of the guy, but at first glance, he looks like Verne Lundquist.

                      6) John Daly turned 49 years old this week, which means that a year from now, the Senior Tour is going to get a big boost, if Daly chooses to play there.

                      5) Bo Jackson is 51 years old, has an artificial hip; he won a long drive contest at a charity golf tournament this week, hitting a golf ball 331 yards. You never hear about him anymore, which means he has a good life. Good for him.

                      4) Nationals 13, Braves 12-- Atlanta led 10-2 after the 4th inning; Washington has been playing terrible baseball. Teams combined to allow nine unearned runs in this game. The NL East is wide open for the Mets to win, especially is the Nationals keep playing this sloppily.

                      3) When the NBA holds its draft in June, shouldn't the D-league draft be immediately after it, starting at midnight and shown on the NBA Network? It would be obvious to everyone then what kids got bad advice and maybe more kids would stay in school instead of coming out when they should not.

                      2) My point is this-- there are 30 NBA teams, it is a two-round draft, so that is sixty selections. 48 college players, 43 international kids applied for this year's draft- thats not counting the college seniors. It just does not add up-- lot of kids could still be in college, getting better-- college teams practice more.

                      1) Since Kevin Durant helped get Scott Brooks fired, I hope he at least got Brooks' cellphone bill reduced, the way he does on that TV commercial.
