Cavaliers continue to be a red-hot bet

LeBron James made it known before the start of the season that his return to Cleveland wouldn't be a completely seamless transition. It took some time, but now that the Cavs are firing on all cylinders they're quickly becoming a fantastic play for sports bettors.

The Cavaliers started off the season with a 19-20 straight-up record while only averaging 99.8 points per game. In their last 18 contests, they've gone 16-2 SU and have averaged 108.6 PPG.

During that 18 game span, the Cavs have cashed 14 times after squeaking out a cover in Sunday's 101-83 victory over the New York Knicks.

King James' squad's next matchup will be Tuesday against the Detroit Pistons in the Motor City.

NBA roundup: Love's double-double leads Cavs

NEW YORK -- Cleveland forward Kevin Love recorded a team-best 29th double-double, leading the Cavaliers to a 101-83 win over the New York Knicks on Sunday at Madison Square Garden.

Love scored 16 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in the Cavaliers' 16th win in their last 18 games to move their record to 35-22. He eclipsed the 5,000-rebound barrier early in the first quarter and has 5,014 for his career. Love is seventh in the league in double-doubles.

Forward LeBron James and point guard Kyrie Irving each scored 18 points in three quarters of work. James surpassed Allen Iverson for 22nd on the NBA's all-time scoring list in the first quarter. He was four points shy of the former Philadelphia guard. James has accumulated 24,383 points in his career.

It was the first time James failed to score at least 25 points in the last 13 road games.

Shooting guard J.R. Smith scored 17 points in his first return to the Garden since being traded by the Knicks on Jan. 5. Fellow guard Iman Shumpert, who came over to Cleveland in that trade, registered seven of the Cavaliers' 22 assists.

    Pistons 106, Wizards 89

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope poured in 26 points, including 13 during the third quarter, and Detroit pulled away to a victory over Washington at The Palace.

Center Andre Drummond supplied 18 points and 16 rebounds for the Pistons (23-33), who are 2-0 since the All-Star break. Point guard Reggie Jackson, acquired in a trade with Oklahoma City on Thursday, overcame a slow start in his Pistons debut to contribute 17 points and five assists.

Power forward Greg Monroe added 15 points and 15 rebounds and reserve forward Anthony Tolliver chipped in 13 points for Detroit.

Center Marcin Gortat's 24 points and 10 rebounds led the Wizards (33-23), who have lost three straight, including a 38-point thumping by Cleveland in their first game after the All-Star break.

    Hawks 97, Bucks 86

MILWAUKEE -- Forward Paul Millsap scored 23 and shooting guard Kyle Krover got nine of his 12 in the final quarter as Atlanta snapped a two-game losing streak with a victory over Milwaukee at the Bradley Center.

Korver had battled with his shot all night and was just 1-of-5 from the field and 1-of-4 on 3-point attempts heading into the final quarter, as Milwaukee had whittled a 15-point deficit down to two.

But Korver hit three 3-pointers in the first 2:30 of the quarter, as the Hawks used a 13-4 run to go back up by 11.

Atlanta only shot 40.2 percent for the game but scored 18 points off 24 Milwaukee turnovers and was dominant on the boards, getting 14 offensive rebounds which the Hawks converted into 19 points.

    Thunder 119, Nuggets 94

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Russell Westbrook scored 21 points and dished out a career-high 17 assists to lead Oklahoma City to a victory over Denver at the Chesapeake Energy Arena.

The Thunder played without forward Kevin Durant for the second consecutive game after he had surgery on his right foot earlier in the day. Despite that, they improved to 31-25 on the season have won eight of their last nine contests.

The Nuggets' slide continued as they have now lost eight of their last nine games. At 20-35, they are still third in the Northwest Division.

Oklahoma City forward Serge Ibaka posted 20 points, eight rebounds and eight blocked shots. In his second game with the Thunder, Enes Kanter scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Guard Dion Waiters came off the bench to score 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Guard Ty Lawson led Denver with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Forward Danilo Gallinari added 16 points.

    Pacers 104, Warriors 98

INDIANAPOLIS -- Guard Rodney Stuckey, playing on a sprained left ankle, scored a season-best-tying 30 points Sunday night, leading Indiana to a victory over short-handed Golden State in Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Golden State (43-10) got 39 points from guard Klay Thompson but played without its leading scorer, All-Star guard Stephen Curry, who has a sprained right ankle.

Indiana led 89-84 with 6:27 remaining, but six consecutive points from Thompson, including four free throws, gave Golden State a 90-89 lead with 4:05 left. Consecutive baskets from Stuckey and forward David West pushed the Pacers in front 93-90 with 3:11 to play.

    Magic 103, 76ers 98

ORLANDO -- Center Nikola Vucevic scored 31 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Orlando to a victory over lowly Philadelphia.

The Magic (19-39) won their third consecutive game, their longest winning streak since February of last season. They are 4-2 under interim coach James Borrego, who replaced Jacque Vaughn earlier this month. The Sixers (12-43) lost their third consecutive game.

Magic forward Channing Frye had 15 points and hit three of his seven 3-point attempts. Guard Victor Oladipo had 17 points. Point guard Elfrid Payton had 10 points, seven assists and eight rebounds. Reserve guard Willie Green had 16 points.

    Mavericks 92, Hornets 81

DALLAS -- Dallas hopes forward Amar'e Stoudemire is another piece in a potential championship puzzle. The fit looked pretty good Sunday night.

Stoudemire made his Dallas debut and scored 14 points off the bench in a victory over slumping Charlotte at American Airlines Center.

The Mavericks (38-20) improved to 11-0 all-time in Dallas against the current Charlotte franchise. The Hornets (22-32) are still in the Eastern Conference playoff race in ninth place despite dropping their fifth game in a row.

    Grizzlies 98, Trail Blazers 92

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Center Marc Gasol scored 21 points, and Memphis came back from a 13-point deficit after three quarters to beat Portland at the Moda Center.

Guard Courtney Lee added 19 points, and point guard Mike Conley collected 15 points, eight assists and six rebounds for the Grizzlies, who won for the 15th time in 18 games.

Guard Damian Lillard scored 18 points with seven assists and forward Nicolas Batum contributed 17 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for the Trail Blazers, who made four of 23 shots from the field and were outscored 34-15 in the fourth quarter.

    Lakers 118, Celtics 111 (OT)

LOS ANGELES -- Guard Jeremy Lin scored 25 points and forward Wesley Johnson had 22 as Los Angeles ended a seven-game skid with an overtime victory over Boston at Staples Center.

Guard Nick Young added 19 points for the Lakers (14-41).

Forward Jae Crowder had 22 points to lead the Celtics (20-33), who lost for the third time in four games. Boston guards Isaiah Thomas and Avery Bradley had 21 and 20 points, respectively.

Los Angeles held a 103-94 lead with 1:28 remaining in regulation after a fadeaway by Young, but failed to close the deal. Boston scored seven consecutive points to close to 103-101 on a 3-pointer by Bradley with 18.7 seconds remaining, but two free throws by Young with 12.4 seconds left gave Los Angeles a four-point cushion. Crowder's layup cut the deficit to two again with 8.5 seconds left before Young missed one of two free throws with 8.2 seconds.

        February 23, 2015

Raptors at Pelicans – 8:05 PM EST

The playoff hopes for New Orleans seem to be slimming by the day as the Pelicans have dropped four of their past five games. The Pelicans snapped a four-game skid in Saturday’s 105-91 victory over the Heat as two-point road underdogs, but lost both Anthony Davis and Ryan Anderson to injuries. Davis re-aggravated a shoulder injury and will be sidelined for 1-2 weeks, while Anderson is on the shelf for 2-4 weeks with a knee sprain. New Orleans begins a three-game homestand, but has lost four straight games at Smoothie King Center.

Toronto started the second half with a pair of blowouts – sitting on each side of a rout. The Raptors destroyed the Hawks on Friday, 105-80, but tired legs caught up with them the next night in a 22-point defeat at Houston. Dwane Casey’s team has cashed the ‘under’ in four straight games, while limiting each opponent in this stretch to 98 points or less. Toronto is playing with revenge after getting shocked by New Orleans last month, 95-93 as 11-point home favorites, as Davis sat out that game as well due to injury.

Bucks at Bulls – 8:05 PM EST

Milwaukee makes the short trip to the United Center after falling to Atlanta at home on Sunday afternoon, 97-86 to end a four-game winning streak. Since trading point guard Brandon Knight to Phoenix, the Bucks’ offense has scored just 89 and 86 points in two games, as Milwaukee has covered only once in the past seven contests. Jason Kidd’s squad owns an 8-1 record in the previous nine games off a loss, while putting together an impressive 13-2 ATS mark in the past 15 games on the highway.

The Bulls look for their third victory over the Bucks this season, as Chicago took care of Milwaukee last month at the United Center without Derrick Rose, 95-87. Pau Gasol pumped in 46 points to help Chicago cover as six-point favorites, but the Bulls are 3-9 ATS in their past 12 opportunities as a home favorite. In Saturday’s 112-107 home triumph over the Suns, six Bulls scored in double-figures, but Chicago allowed Phoenix to shoot 53% from the floor.

Spurs at Jazz – 9:05 PM EST

The second part of San Antonio’s Rodeo Trip hasn’t been kind to the Spurs, losing to the Clippers and Warriors since the All-Star break. The defense has been shredded in both defeats, allowing 119 points at Los Angeles, then giving up 17 three-pointers in a 110-99 setback the following night at Golden State as 7 ½-point underdogs. The Spurs have turned into pointspread poison of late, compiling a 2-9-1 ATS record in the past 12 games, including a 1-5 ATS mark in the last six road contests.

The Jazz likely won’t make the playoffs, but Utah is going to be a tough out the rest of the way. Quin Snyder’s club put up a terrific defensive effort in shutting down Portland on Friday night, 92-76, limiting the Blazers to 36% shooting from the floor. Utah improved to 8-3-1 ATS in the last 12 games, while covering three of their previous four in the home underdog role. The home team has split each of the first two meetings this season, as Utah tripped up San Antonio, 100-96 in December as nine-point underdogs.

Grizzlies at Clippers – 10:35 PM EST

Memphis plays with no rest after picking up its 40th victory on the season in last night’s 98-92 win at Portland. The Grizzlies erased a 13-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter, but Memphis’ defense tightened up by allowing 40% shooting from the floor, while LaMarcus Aldridge sat out for the Blazers with a thumb injury. Memphis has split its last six games on the second of a back-to-back set, while cashing its fifth straight ‘under’ on Sunday. Since getting down to the Clippers, 2-0 in the first round of the 2013 playoffs, the Grizzlies have won seven of the past eight meetings with Los Angeles.

The Clippers went through a disastrous road trip prior to the All-Star break, which included losing All-Star forward Blake Griffin to an elbow injury. However, Los Angeles managed to pick up a pair of impressive wins over Dallas and Houston before the break, then pulled off the Lone Star State sweep with a victory over San Antonio last Thursday. Throw in a 27-point blowout of Sacramento on Saturday night and Doc Rivers’ squad is riding a four-game winning streak since a four-game skid. The Clippers have cashed the ‘over’ in five of the past six games, while topping the 107-point mark in each of these contests.

        • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Louisville 52, Georgia Tech 51-- Cards were down 13 in second half.

-- St John's 58, Xavier 57-- Game of spurts; Red Storm won five of last six.

-- Kansas State 70, Kansas 63-- K-State has to do a better job of security after games, someone is going to get hurt with ridiculous court storming.

-- Did the Red Sox sign Yoan Moncada as a precursor to a Cole Hamels trade?

-- Did the Miami Heat lower ticket prices when Lebron James skipped town?

-- UCLA hired former Penn State DC Tom Bradley as defensive coordinator; these college coaches are nomads, many of them. Change jobs a lot.

          **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Ranking the months of the year.......

Keep in mind I live in the northeast, so weather is a factor in these rankings.......

          12) January-- 31 days of potentially horrible weather. NFL playoffs help, college hoop helps, golf on TV helps, but if you live in upstate NY, January generally sucks.

          11) February-- Same as January, except three days shorter and spring training starts, though the exhibition games belong to March. Since I'm retired now, Monday holidays in January/February don't help this rating anymore- every day is a holiday.

          10) May-- NBA/NHL playoffs, baseball and better weather, not much else.

          9) June-- US Open, NBA Finals, summer starts and if you're a kid or a teacher, school ends for the summer, but I'm not a kid or a teacher.

          8) April-- Opening Day of baseball is special, college hoop Final Four, playoffs start in NBA/NHL, the Masters and winter is officially over. Plus I usually go to Las Vegas in April, though this year my trip is in March.

          7) October-- World Series, football, some downtime in between baseball and basketball seasons. If you've never done Halloween in Las Vegas, its quite an experience.

          6) March-- NCAA tournament is my favorite event of the year, but other than that and spring training baseball, March is a slightly better version of February.

          5) August is a great month to live in upstate New York, lot of fun stuff going on and it is only the end of summer if you're a kid/teacher. Plus football season is approaching so there's lot of studying to be done, preferably ourdoors by a pool.

          4) July-- Horse racing in Saratoga, me in Las Vegas for couple weeks-- NBA Summer League, lot of AAU games, baseball's All-Star Game, the British Open, even start of NFL training camps. July is a very good month.

          3) September-- Football starts, baseball pennant races, a very interesting month.

          2) November-- Ton of activity; college hoop starts, college football winds down, NFL, NHL, NBA; when I was working, you also had two days off in there. Election Night is an underrated night of good live TV, if its an even-numbered year.

          1) December-- Bowl games, college hoop, end of the NFL regular season, Christmas, New Year's Eve, hey its my birthday too!!! So what if it snows sometimes.....

NBA roundup: Pelicans rally in final seconds

NEW ORLEANS -- Reserve center Alexis Ajinca hit a go-ahead layup off a wraparound feed from guard Tyreke Evans with 49 seconds left, and guard Jimmer Fredette nailed two free throws with 4.7 seconds remaining to lift the New Orleans Pelicans to a 100-97 comeback victory over the Toronto Raptors on Monday night at the Smoothie King Center.

Reserve forward Luke Babbitt made four 3-pointers, including two in the final 2:32, to score a season-high 18 points as New Orleans erased an 18-point, first-half deficit.

The Pelicans trailed 87-79 with 6:41 left but outscored Toronto 21-10 in the final 5:53 to hand the Raptors their second consecutive loss.

New Orleans (29-27) got 16 points from Ajinca, 15 from newly acquired point guard Norris Cole and 14 from center Omer Asik, who blocked a shot in the lane by Raptors guard Kyle Lowry with 6.2 seconds left. Asik added 11 rebounds.

Lowry led Toronto (37-19) with a game-high 22 points. Center Jonas Valanciunas finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds.

                Heat 119, 76ers 108

MIAMI -- In an unexpectedly high-scoring affair, Miami got 29 points from forward Luol Deng to beat Philadelphia at AmericanAirlines Arena.

Miami (24-31) posted a season high in points. Philadelphia (12-44) scored more than 100 for just the third time in 33 games. Entering Monday, they were two of the three lowest-scoring teams in the NBA -- Miami 28th at 93.1 per game and Philadelphia last at 90.1.

Point guard Goran Dragic, playing just his second game with the Heat, had 23 points and 10 assists. Guard Dwyane Wade added 18 points, and center Hassan Whiteside contributed 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Philadelphia, which lost its 10th consecutive road game, was led by reserve shooting guard Hollis Thompson (season-high 22 points) and center Nerlens Noel (18 points, seven rebounds, four blocks).

                Bulls 87, Bucks 71

CHICAGO -- Chicago had no trouble with Milwaukee at the United Center, cruising to a victory against the third-place team in the Central Division.

Reserve guard Tony Snell scored 18 of his game-high 20 points in the first half, when the Bulls (36-21) seized the lead in the first quarter and never trailed again. Paul Gasol recorded his NBA-leading 37th double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds and rookie reserve forward Nikola Mirotic had a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds.

Guard Jimmy Butler added 11 points and nine rebounds, while center Joakim Noah finished with eight points and 16 rebounds for Chicago, which dominated the glass by a 62-41 margin. Guard Khris Middleton led three Bucks players in double figures with 17 points, while forward Ersan Ilyasova had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Forward Giannis Antetokounmp added 11 points for the Bucks (31-25), who scored 11 points less than their previous season low of 82 on Feb. 2 at Toronto.

                Rockets 113, Timberwolves 102

HOUSTON -- James Harden capped his second triple-double of the season with a backbreaking 3-pointer in the waning moments to help Houston fend off Minnesota at Toyota Center.

Paced by a powerful two-way performance by rookie forward Andrew Wiggins (30 points, seven rebounds), the Timberwolves (12-43) erased a 14-point, fourth-quarter deficit with an 18-5 run that included a Wiggins 3-pointer and a three-point play, the latter with 4:03 to play.

But the Rockets (38-18) finally discovered their touch from deep, with Harden nailing their second 3-pointer with 1:33 left for a 107-98 lead.

Harden finished with 31 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists as well as a career-high-tying four blocks. Forward Terrence Jones, who made his return to the starting lineup, added 15 points and 15 rebounds, including a pair of crucial offensive boards to help seal the victory. Minnesota guard Kevin Martin had 21 points while center Nikola Pekovic posted a double-double of 16 points and 13 boards. Rockets forward Josh Smith added 17 points off the bench before fouling out.

                Jazz 90, Spurs 81

SALT LAKE CITY -- Point guard Trey Burke scored 23 points and forward Gordon Hayward added 18 to lead Utah to a victory over San Antonio.

Forward Derrick Favors added 14 points and 10 rebounds and center Rudy Gobert chipped in 14 more boards, helping the Jazz (21-34) win the season series against the Spurs for the first time since the 2009-10 season.

Forward Tim Duncan scored 14 points and center Boris Diaw added 13 off the bench for San Antonio, which tied its season low for points in a game. The Spurs (34-22) turned the ball over 22 times, leading to 17 Jazz points.

                Nets 110, Nuggets 82

DENVER -- Guard Deron Williams had 16 points and 12 assists, center Brooks Lopez scored 19 points and pulled down nine rebounds and Brooklyn beat slumping Denver.

The 28-point win is Brooklyn's largest margin of victory since beating Oklahoma City by 31 on Nov. 3.

The Nets have won two in a row after losing the first three of an eight-game road trip. Despite a losing record, Brooklyn (23-31) is holding onto the eighth and final postseason spot in the Eastern Conference.

With a tough upcoming schedule, the Nets needed Monday's win to stay in playoff position. They did it by outscoring Denver 65-37 over the final 27 minutes.

                Celtics 115, Suns 110

PHOENIX -- Guard Isaiah Thomas burned his former team with six of his 21 points in the final 1:37 as Boston held on to beat Phoenix.

The Suns rallied from 19 points down in the first half and from 12 down in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to 101-100 on the second of two consecutive Eric Bledsoe 3-pointers with 1:47 left. But Thomas, traded from Phoenix to Boston four days ago at the deadline, answered with a 25-foot 3-pointer as he was being fouled by new Suns guard Brandon Knight and finished off the four-point play to restore the Celtics lead to 105-100.

On the next Phoenix possession, Thomas stole a Bledsoe pass and finished with a reverse layup with 40.4 seconds left to allow Boston (21-33) to salvage the final game of a three-game road trip. The Celtics had a season-high 14 3-pointers, four by forward Jae Crowder and three by Thomas.

Bledsoe had 21 points for the Suns (29-28), who have lost eight of their last nine games and three in a row since trading away five players, including Thomas and guard Goran Dragic, on Feb. 19. Knight had 20 points for Phoenix in his home debut.

                Grizzlies 90, Clippers 87

LOS ANGELES -- Point guard Mike Conley scored 18 points and recorded a game-winning steal in the final seconds, and Memphis edged Los Angeles at Staples Center.

Forward Jeff Green chipped in 16 points and center Marc Gasol had 14 for the Grizzlies, who were playing the second end of back-to-back contests after defeating the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday night. Memphis (41-14) won for the 12th time in 14 games, beating the Clippers for the third consecutive meeting dating back to last season.

Point guard Chris Paul scored 30 points and handed out 10 assists to lead the Clippers, who had a five-game winning streak snapped. Guard Jamal Crawford finished with 15 points, but no other Los Angeles player managed double figures. Center DeAndre Jordan had nine points and 17 rebounds.

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the Day: Warriors at Wizards
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Golden State Warriors at Washington Wizards (+3, OFF)

The Washington Wizards have surrendered their spot in the top four of the Eastern Conference with some lackluster play of late and could have a hard time pulling out of the funk on Tuesday, when they host the West-leading Golden State Warriors. The Wizards dropped their two games following the All-Star break by a combined 55 points and have lost eight of 10 overall. The Warriors are hoping Stephen Curry will be available for the contest.

Curry sat out Sunday’s 104-98 loss at Indiana with a foot injury and is questionable to return against the Wizards as Golden State continues a six-game road trip. Klay Thompson exploded for 39 points without his running mate but did not get much help as the Warriors’ latest winning streak came to an end at four games. Washington isn’t getting anywhere near 39 points from anyone lately and failed to reach even 90 points as a team in four of its eight games this month, including a 106-89 setback at Detroit on Sunday.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, CSN Bay Area (Golden State), CSN Mid-Atlantic (Washington)

LINE HISTORY: Oddsmakers opened the Wiz as 3-point home dogs. The total is currently OTB.

INJURY REPORT: Warriors - G Stephen Curry (Questionable, ankle). Wizards - G Bradley Beal (Questionable, leg).

                        POWER RANKINGS: Warriors (-15.5) + Wizards (-7.5) + home court (-3.0) = Warriors -5

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (43-10 SU, 32-20-1 ATS, 25-28 O/U): Golden State does not seem concerned about Curry’s injury and expects to have him back soon as the team begins a stretch of three straight games against teams in the top five of the East. “Steph is good,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr told reporters after Sunday’s game. “He was sore in warm-ups, and we didn’t want to take any chances. He just has a sore foot, and we’ll take it day by day.” Curry put up 25 points and 11 assists in a win over the San Antonio Spurs on Friday and has scored at least 20 points in 11 straight games – tied for the second-longest streak of his career.

ABOUT THE WIZARDS (33-23SU - 23-32-1 ATS, 24-30-2 O/U): Washington has had a problem competing with teams at or near the top of the standings of late, with losses to Cleveland, Atlanta and Toronto (twice) and is slowing on the defensive end while allowing its last two opponents an average of 116.5 points. “It’s that snowball effect that adds up to big things, and they’re getting bigger and bigger as we speak,” Wizards coach Randy Wittman told reporters. “Until we do something differently, (nothing will change), and if I have to do something differently lineup-wise, whatever. We’re just continually hitting our heads against the wall.” One problem is the absence of guard Bradley Beal, who has missed the last five games with a leg injury.

                        TRENDS:

                        * Under is 6-0 in Wizards last six vs. NBA Pacific.
                        * Warriors are 0-6-1 ATS in their last seven vs. Eastern Conference.
                        * Wizards are 1-9 ATS in their last 10 games following a ATS loss.
                        * Under is 5-0 in Warriors last five overall.

-- Derrick Rose is having knee surgery, so he's on the shelf again. Hopefully, when he heals, he won't play in any more useless summer tournaments.

-- Arkansas 81, Texas A&M 75-- Hogs led 33-9 in this game, were up 23 at half.

-- Maryland 59, Wisconsin 53-- Signature win for the Terrapins.

-- NC State 58, North Carolina 46-- Least points UNC has scored in Deandome, and that covers thirty seasons.

-- Missouri 64, Florida 52-- Gators were 9-23 on foul line, PG Hill was 1-8. Oy.

-- Niagara 82, Canisius 71-- Pretty big upset in the MAAC.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud......

                          13) Lebron James has a 10-year old son, Lebron Jr. There is no need for ESPN to show this kid playing youth basketball-- let the kid be a kid.

Wayne Gretzky's son wound up playing pro baseball; neither one of Michael Jordan's sons wound up finishing their college hoop career. Its hard as hell having a dad who you can't possibly be as good as-- no need to put a 10-year old on national TV.

                          12) Now that the Red Sox have this Moncada kid, they have a lot more depth in their position players than they do on the mound; are they stockpiling players, hoping to pry Cole Hamels from Philly?

                          11) If my job depended on drafting the right QB this spring, I'd have two really big questions about Jameis Winston:
                          a) Does he really want to play football, or does he want to try baseball too?
                          b) His weight would be a concern to me; thats a red flag about his dedication.

                          10) In the entire 2014 season, Marcus Mariota took five snaps under center. Five. The rest were shotgun snaps. Oregon never huddles, so a 1st-round draft pick QB has to learn the basics of running an NFL huddle-- thats a big adjustment, on top of all the other things he has to learn, in addition to adjusting to the speed of the game.

                          9) September 4, Friday night of Labor Day weekend: Washington at Boise State, the return of former Boise coach Chris Petersen, who now runs the Huskies' program. No one who has left Boise State has equalled the success they had on the blue turf.

                          8) UCLA quietly hired former Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Bradley, right after the recruiting period ended. This way, he gets to coach a season before he has to recruit and possibly answer questions about the Penn State debacle that he lived through. Good football coach, he will help Jim Mora Jr's team.

                          7) It bears repeating that Snoop Dawg and Jim Mora Sr will both be in the Rose Bowl next fall, cheering on their sons with the Bruins. ESPN has to get an interview with these two football dads, two of the most opposite people in the history of man.

                          6) If you care about such things, ACC home favorites of 5+ points are 14-26 against the spread this season, which shows that the league has no dominant team. Conference tournament in couple of weeks is going to be something.

                          5) Wyoming gets star forward Larry Nance Jr (mono) back tonight; doubt he is 100%, but they need anything they can get from him. Cowboys are on the bubble but stand a pretty good chance in a wide open Mountain West tourney. League is down this year. New Mexico won last three tourneys; they won't this year.

                          4) Guy named Scott Walker might win the Republican nomination for President, but he isn't a college graduate.

Fair question: Should the President of the US be a college graduate?

Last non-graduate candidate to win a major party nomination was Barry Goldwater in 1964; last president who wasn't a college graduate was Harry Truman, and he was a pretty damned good President.

One other question: Walker went to Marquette for a couple of years. Why did he leave? How does a college dropout become such a successful politician?

                          3) Alabama has a young man on its golf team: Davis Love IV. Think their golf booster club has some deep pockets? If I remember right, Davis Love III went to North Carolina and introduced Michael Jordan to golf.

                          2) By the way, I had never heard this before, but in order for a PGA golfer to get into the Hall of Fame, he either has to have won 15 PGA tournaments or two majors.

                          1) Watched a replay of the Florida-Missouri game. Sometimes, you see a team that will just be really happy when the season ends. That team is Florida; they're just awful, losing to a Missouri club that had lost 13 games in a row. Florida's point guard goes 1-8 on the foul line-- what college point guard goes 1-8 on the line?

They've given up on the season and appear anxious for it to be over.

                            Letdown spot

NBA fans are treated to a potential Finals preview with the Golden State Warriors visiting the Cleveland Cavaliers Thursday night. These teams have identical 6-2 records in February, heading into Tuesday, and if the NBA futures are right, Cavs priced at +300 and Warriors priced at +400, they will be battling for the league title this spring.

But after the smoke has cleared and the dust settles Thursday, Golden State must travel overnight to the Great White North to face another of the NBA’s elite. The Toronto Raptors are waiting to sink their claws into the Warriors, who are ripe for a letdown in the Air Canada Centre. Toronto was smashed by 21 points in the Bay Area back in January and would love to return the favor Friday.

                            Lookahead spot

The BYU Cougars are long shots to make the NCAA tournament, sitting third in the West Coast Conference behind projected No. 1 seed Gonzaga and St. Mary’s. It’s not completely crazy to think three WCC schools could go to the Big Dance and in order for that to happen, the Cougars must boost their NCAA portfolio with a win over the Bulldogs this weekend.

With BYU setting its sights on the Zags Saturday, the Cougars could look past this week’s opponent Portland. They travel to the Earle A. Chiles Center Thursday night. The Pilots had strung together four straight wins before road losses at St. Mary’s and Pacific (in overtime). Portland showed it has the offensive firepower to keep pace with BYU and could spoil the Cougars’ tournament hopes before they get a shot at Gonzaga.

                            Schedule spot

The Ottawa Senators escape the horrid winter weather in Canada’s capital with a West Coast road trip this week, dropping the puck in Anaheim Wednesday night. The Sens went 3-2 during a five-game home stand but now play five in a row on the road, including three games in four nights to end the month. Ottawa is just 10-13-3-2 away from the Canadian Tire Centre this season.

Following Wednesday’s game with the Ducks, the Senators stay in Los Angeles to face the Kings Thursday, then have a day off to travel to San Jose to play the Sharks Saturday. Ottawa is outside of the playoff picture heading into this tough stretch of schedule and a couple quick losses could have the front office packing it in for the season, playing the prospects, and sizing up potential deals before the trade deadline. Keep an eye on the Sens motivation come Saturday in San Jose.
