Preview: Mavericks (36-19) at Thunder (28-25)

    Date: February 19, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

Sitting in fifth place in the Western Conference, the Dallas Mavericks are hoping Amar'e Stoudemire can help push them over the top down the stretch.

While the Oklahoma City Thunder find themselves just outside the playoff picture, they have all the pieces in place to make a run if they can stay on the court.

Stoudemire is set to make his Mavericks debut Thursday night against the Thunder as these heavyweights open the season's second half at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

Dallas (36-19) made a big splash by acquiring All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo from Boston back in December, and it appears to have gotten even stronger with Stoudemire now on board. The six-time All-Star signed for the prorated veteran minimum of roughly $460,000 on Wednesday, two days after agreeing to a buyout with NBA-worst New York.

"To play alongside Dirk Nowitzki, Tyson Chandler and other great players, I think it's a tremendous opportunity for me to compete for a championship," he said.

Stoudemire is averaging 20.0 points for his career, but he's managed just 11.9 per game over the last two seasons.

"He's an All-Star, maybe a future Hall of Famer, and he's been in the game for a long time," Rondo said. "So it won't take him a long time to adjust. I'm not worried about Amar'e."

Rondo is expected to return after missing six games with a broken bone near his left eye, but Chandler is uncertain to be available due to an ankle issue suffered last Monday.

"I think the break came at the right time," said Nowitzki, whose team entered All-Star weekend having won six of eight. "We were banged up a little bit. Hopefully everyone feels well (Thursday) and is rested."

The Mavs aren't likely to get much sympathy from the Thunder (28-25), who were forced to get by without Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook for significant chunks during the first half. However, Oklahoma City has won three straight and five of six and appears poised for a very strong last two months.

"We want to look at the things we've done well the last week or so and just try to recreate that and kind of take control of our season ourselves," forward Nick Collison said. "It helps to get guys back healthy. Obviously, hopefully, we keep that going. But the big thing for us is every single night, we've got to realize that we control how we play, and we are in control of our season."

The Thunder return from the break one-half game behind Phoenix for the West's eighth and final playoff berth.

"The thing I love about our team - there's no excuses," coach Scott Brooks said. "There's plenty of games left. We don't know how it's going to end, but I do know - I'm positive about this - that our group is going to continue to play hard and for each other."

It was an memorable weekend for Westbrook, who scored 41 points - one shy of Wilt Chamberlain's 53-year-old record - and was named MVP of Sunday's All-Star Game after leading the West to a 163-158 victory. Durant finished with three points in limited minutes due to routine soreness in his right foot, but he's ready to get back to business.

"Being away for a few days, everybody recharged their batteries," he told the team's official website. "It feels good to get back together and try to make this second-half push."

The Thunder dropped this season's first meeting 112-107 at Dallas on Dec. 28 as Nowitzki matched a season high with 30 points. Oklahoma City, which was without Durant that night, is looking to avoid a fourth consecutive loss in the series after winning the previous seven matchups.

Durant is averaging 31.7 points on 65.3 percent shooting in his last three games and 34.0 in the last seven against the Mavericks.

Preview: Spurs (34-19) at Clippers (35-19)

      Date: February 19, 2015 10:30 PM EDT

The teams that have represented the Western Conference in the last four NBA Finals are in action as the NBA returns from an extended All-Star break on Thursday night. The Blake Griffin-less Clippers will be there, too.
It’s borderline depressing. Here’s a franchise that’s been overshadowed by the Lakers in L.A. for years, finally gets its moment in the sun and appears to be on the verge of falling flat on their collective face.

As the season starts back up, there are plenty of things to look for in both games of this attractive TNT doubleheader. Oklahoma City has a playoff berth to claim, sitting a half-game behind Phoenix in the race for the No. 8 seed. Dallas sees Rajon Rondo return from his facial fractures, may have Tyson Chandler back from an ankle injury and will be able to see just what they’ve got in newly-signed forward Amar’e Stoudemire.

Defending champ San Antonio, only one-third through the Rodeo trip and just starting to pick up steam with Tony Parker and Kawhi Leonard finally healthy.

There’s optimism surrounding all three former conference champs, that feeling that their best may be yet to come.

Then there are the Clippers, who certainly don’t inspire that same sentiment. L.A. was already looking a little shaky before losing Griffin for the foreseeable future after he required surgery to remove a staph infection. Now it’s all about staying afloat without their leading scorer. Their team defense has looked rough. Bench play has been a weakness. Disaster may be a losing streak away.

Even though the Thunder currently find themselves on the outside looking in, they’re just 6.5 games behind the Clippers with just under 30 games to go. If Griffin is unable to make it back by mid-March, which was the original worst-case scenario, that cushion could disappear quickly.

After hosting the Kings on Saturday, L.A. will open next week against the Grizzlies at Staples and then see them again a few nights later in Memphis as the second leg of a four-game road swing that will see them also stop through Houston, Chicago and Minnesota. They’ll return home for a March 4 date against Portland and visit Golden State after that. Even with Griffin, that’s a horrific schedule to navigate. Without him, it could lead to freefall.

DeAndre Jordan has gone for back-to-back 20-20 games with his frontcourt tag-team partner sidelined, delivering enormous wins against the Rockets and Mavericks. He was one of the West’s biggest All-Star snubs, so maybe he’ll remain motivated while having the benefit of being rested. The Clippers are counting on him to continue his tear.

Houston head coach Kevin McHale put him on the free-throw line 26 times in an effort to slow Jordan down and get in his head via his biggest weakness, but Jordan remained focused despite making only 12 of his attempt, grabbing 20 boards and anchoring the defense.

Gregg Popovich has only put Jordan on the free-throw line five times in three meetings this season, but has been known to employ the Hack-a-Shaq liberally whenever he feels it might aid the cause. Look for that to potentially be a factor here.

There have been whispers that the Clippers have been victimized by in-fighting, so maybe the trade deadline passing will ease some of the stress. Since head coach Doc Rivers also makes the personnel decisions, those who are left after 3 p.m. ET can feel the team is committed to them.

Still, there’s a reason the Spurs are a two-point road favorite at Staples. In spite of big wins without Griffin just before the break against the other two Texas teams, L.A. has major issues to solve and a rested, deeper championship team waiting at the door. The Spurs have won two of the three meetings between the teams this season, but did suffer their worst home loss last time they got together, falling 105-85 on Jan. 31.

The first game should be intriguing given all the moving parts. The favored Thunder are led by All-Star MVP Russell Westbrook and reigning MVP Kevin Durant, who just told GQ, “I just don’t like other teams and players” as he continued the recent trend of speaking his mind in a revealing interview for their March issue. Dallas has won six of eight in spite of all their injuries and will have the most frontcourt depth it has had all season if Chandler can go.

PGs on the move on NBA deadline day

        February 19, 2015

Point guards moving quickly made this trade deadline a transition game.

Goran Dragic, Michael Carter-Williams, Reggie Jackson and Brandon Knight all were dealt Thursday in the final hours that trades were allowed, as a number of teams handed their keys to different drivers.

Kevin Garnett also has a new address - his original NBA one. The Timberwolves brought him back to Minnesota by sending Thaddeus Young to Brooklyn.

There were 12 trades involving 39 players. So many were on the move in deals agreed to shortly before the 3 p.m. EST deadline that most of the transactions took hours for the NBA to approve.

Dragic and Jackson were two players to watch on deadline day, because neither was expected to remain with his team after this season. Both their teams opted to move them rather than risk losing them for nothing.

Phoenix sent Dragic to Miami, getting two first-round picks and a package of players for the Slovenian, a third-team All-NBA selection last season. The Suns filled his spot by acquiring Knight from Milwaukee in a three-team deal with Philadelphia, which sent Carter-Williams to the Bucks.

''I did feel it was time to find a better fit,'' Dragic wrote on Twitter, adding ''NOW it's (hash)heatnation time and I'm excited to bring the Dragon's fire to Miami!!''

Zoran Dragic, Goran's brother, also went from Phoenix to Miami.

''We are incredibly pleased to take another step in getting the Miami Heat back to real championship prominence with the acquisition of Goran Dragic,'' Heat President Pat Riley said. ''Goran is an All-NBA player, including the Most Improved Player last season, and we felt that once he became available, we would do all that we could to acquire him.''

Jackson, who began the season replacing an injured Russell Westbrook, now will step in for the sidelined Brandon Jennings. The Oklahoma City Thunder sent Jackson to Detroit in a three-way trade that included Utah.

Even backup point guards seemed in demand, with players such as Isaiah Thomas (Boston), Ramon Sessions (Washington), Andre Miller (Sacramento), DJ Augustin (Oklahoma City), Norris Cole (New Orleans) and Pablo Prigioni (Houston) getting new homes.

Some big guys got in on the little guys' fun, with Enes Kanter getting his wish to leave Utah when he ended up in Oklahoma City as Kendrick Perkins' replacement.

''It is a rare opportunity to acquire a player like Enes who will be an added dimension to our frontcourt and has his best basketball in front of him,'' Thunder general manager Sam Presti said.

The flurry of moves ended a busy season of swaps in which contenders such as Cleveland, Memphis and Dallas refused to wait for the last minute to get their dealing done, having upgraded long ago.

Other teams had their chance Thursday, and Portland may have done it with the first completed deal of the day when it acquired Arron Afflalo from Denver.

''Arron is a proven winner with playoff experience who will be easily integrated into our culture,'' Blazers general manager Neil Olshey said. ''He possesses a skill set that complements our style of play on both ends of the floor and will make an immediate impact as we continue our playoff push.

        ---

Among the items of note from deadline day:

A ROUND-TRIP BIG TICKET: The 38-year-old Garnett spent his first 12 seasons in Minnesota, where he was nicknamed the Big Ticket. He guided the Timberwolves to the only eight playoff appearances in franchise history and won the MVP while leading them to the Western Conference finals in 2004. He waived his no-trade clause to return, and the Wolves will try to get him to stick around past his 20th season by offering him a two-year extension in the offseason, a person with knowledge of the team's thinking said.

DEPARTING DENVER: The Nuggets have been one of those teams where good individual talent added up to a collective mess, so they broke it apart Thursday. Portland acquired Afflalo in a five-player deal, upgrading its bench with a player averaging 14.5 points, while Denver also sent JaVale McGee and a first-round pick to Philadelphia. ''We're changing things around because, obviously, we weren't good enough the way we were,'' Nuggets coach Brian Shaw said.

RACE FOR EIGHTH: The teams battling for the final playoff spots in each conference were among the busiest. Miami, the current No. 8 in the East, picked up Dragic, while the Nets (Young) and Boston Celtics (Thomas) are close behind and may have upgraded. The Suns will count on Knight to help them try to hold off Oklahoma City and New Orleans, which added point guard help in Jackson and Cole, respectively.

OLD RELIABLE: Just starting as Sacramento coach, George Karl was reunited with one of his favorites from his Denver days. Miller played for Karl from 2003-07 and 2011-13 with the Nuggets. ''Adding Andre bolsters our backcourt with one of the most prolific ball distributors in the game,'' said Kings general manager Pete D'Alessandro, who worked for the Nuggets during Miller's time in Denver.

Suns deal 5 players at deadline, two PGs

          February 19, 2015

PHOENIX (AP) - The Phoenix Suns' three point-guard experiment is over.

The Suns pulled off three trades on Sunday, sending Goran Dragic to the Miami Heat and Isaiah Thomas to the Boston Celtics.

That left Eric Bledsoe as the lone member of the point guard trio remaining with Phoenix.

In the third trade, the Suns sent a third point guard, rookie Tyler Ennis, who rarely plays, to the Milwaukee Bucks, along with forward-center Miles Plumlee.

That trade brought the most significant acquisition, guard Brandon Knight from the Bucks.

Dragic's brother, Zoran, also went to the Heat.

Knight, a Milwaukee Bucks starter who plays the point but probably will start alongside Bledsoe. Knight was the Bucks' leading scorer this season at 17.8 points per game. He is a restricted free agent, meaning the Suns can match any offer he gets after the season ends.

Phoenix acquired Marcus Thornton as part on the Thomas trade.

The Suns get three draft picks in the deals. They have Cleveland's first-round pick, top-10 protected, next year as part of the Thomas trade with Boston. They received two first-round picks from Miami. The first is top-seven protected in 2017 and 2018 and unprotected in 2019. The second is unprotected in 2021.

As part of the three-team deal that brought the Suns' Knight, Phoenix gave Philadelphia the first-round pick it had acquired from the Los Angeles Lakers, which is top-five protected next year.

The Suns' team buses were ready to head to the airport from US Airways Center for a flight to Minneapolis when news of the trades broke. The five players got off, hugged teammates and were escorted by coach Jeff Hornacek back into the building.

The upheaval comes with Phoenix still in the thick of the playoff race, a half-game ahead of Oklahoma City for the eighth and final playoff spot in the tough Western Conference.

The Suns were in an awkward position with Dragic after he told them he wanted to be traded and would not re-sign with them when he becomes a free agent at the end of this season.

''I don't trust them anymore,'' he told reporters Wednesday.

He mostly was dissatisfied with his role. With Bledsoe and Thomas dominating the ball, Dragic found himself on the wing or, as he put it, ''standing in the corner.''

          ''That's not me,'' he said.

He said he wants to return to the point guard position that he's played throughout his basketball career.

The 28-year-old Slovenian, in the third season of his second stint in Phoenix, was arguably the Suns' most popular player with the fans, with a polite, friendly personality that made his Wednesday remarks so critical of the front office startling.

Dragic was averaging 16.2 points and 4.1 assists, down significantly from his averages of 20.3 and 5.9 last season, when he was named third-team all-NBA.

Dragic said he didn't want to stay even if Thomas was traded. That meant the Suns would have to trade Dragic by Thursday or see him walk with no compensation when the season was over.

Thomas' time in Phoenix was short-lived. He signed a four-year, $27 million contract and was Phoenix's major offseason acquisition by general manager Ryan McDonough.

After Bledsoe signed as a restricted free agent the Suns found themselves with three point guards who all wanted the ball in their hands.

Thomas averaged 15.2 points and 3.7 assists with the Suns.

Plumlee was effective last season in his first extensive NBA playing time, but he had been replaced at starting center by the ever-improving Alex Len.

To make the deals work financially, the Suns acquired John Salmons and Danny Granger in the Miami trade and Kendall Marshall in the Milwaukee-Philadelphia deal. They are expected to waive Salmons and Marshall and reportedly were still deciding whether to waive Granger.

Bucks trade Brandon Knight to Suns

            February 19, 2015

MILWAUKEE (AP) - The Bucks are not standing pat on their surprising season.

A person familiar with the deal tells The Associated Press that t

Milwaukee traded guard Brandon Knight to Phoenix in a three-team deal Thursday that also sends Michael Carter-Williams from Philadelphia to Milwaukee, according to a person familiar with the deal who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because details had not been officially announced. The Bucks also get guard Tyler Ennis and forward Miles Plumlee from Phoenix.

Milwaukee is 30-23 with the season set to resume Friday following the All-Star break. The Bucks replace Knight by stocking up on two young guards to work with first-year coach Jason Kidd.

Plumlee also gives the Bucks another body up front with center Larry Sanders' future in doubt following a suspension for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

Carter-Williams was the 11th overall pick in 2013 for the 76ers. He was averaging 15 points, 7.4 assists and 6.2 rebounds this season.

''I can't lie I'm shocked. I love this city thank you for everything,'' Carter-Williams posted on Twitter. ''I can honestly say I gave it my all. I wish Philly nothing but the best.''

Knight, drafted eighth overall in 2011 by Detroit, was traded to Milwaukee before the 2013-14 season for Brandon Jennings. Knight was averaging 17.8 points, 5.4 assists and 4.3 rebounds with the Bucks

Ennis is a rookie drafted last summer in the first round. Phoenix drafted Plumlee in the first round in 2012.

Heat acquire PG Dragic from Suns

              February 19, 2015

MIAMI (AP) - Goran Dragic wanted a new home, and the Miami Heat wanted a new guard.

On trade deadline day, they were a perfect match.

The Heat swung a deal to acquire Dragic - a third-team All-NBA player last season - from the Phoenix Suns on Thursday, a person with knowledge of the trade told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the NBA's standard trade call had not yet taken place to make the deal official.

The person said Miami sent Norris Cole, Shawne Williams, Danny Granger and Justin Hamilton to the Suns, who were busy moving at least some of those players to New Orleans before the 3 p.m. trade deadline arrived.

Zoran Dragic, Goran's brother, was also coming to Miami from Phoenix, the person said, adding that the Heat were also including two first-round draft picks - one from 2017 and the other from 2021 to close the deal.

Goran Dragic made it clear that he wanted out of Phoenix and its log-jammed point-guard situation in recent days. He's averaging 16.2 points and 4.1 assists this season, down from 20.3 points and 5.9 assists a year ago.

And with him set to be a free agent this summer, the Suns knew they had to either acquire something for him now or watch him walk away in July for nothing.

              Hence, Miami saw its opportunity.

Cole will be a free agent this summer and wasn't expected to stay in Miami. Williams and Granger were both in their first year with the Heat - with neither playing regular minutes of late - and Hamilton had become more expendable in recent weeks after the emergence of Hassan Whiteside in the center spot.

Miami starts its post-All-Star-break schedule in New York on Friday. The Heat are hanging on to the No. 8 spot in the Eastern Conference, part of a six-team group all bunched within two games for the final two spots on the current playoff bracket from that side of the league.

                Pistons bring back Tayshaun Prince

                February 19, 2015

Tayshaun Prince is returning to the Pistons after Detroit acquired the veteran forward in a trade with Boston.

The Pistons confirmed the trade Thursday night. The Celtics received forward Jonas Jerebko and guard Gigi Datome.

''Tayshaun Prince is certainly well known to fans in Detroit and we're pleased to welcome him back,'' Pistons President Stan Van Gundy said in a statement. ''He fills a position of need for us at small forward with his offensive and defensive versatility. We thank both Jonas and Gigi for their hard work and wish them well going forward.''

Prince was part of Detroit's championship team in 2004 and remained with the Pistons until 2013, when he was traded to Memphis. The Grizzlies dealt him to Boston last month, and now the 34-year-old returns to the franchise that drafted him in the first round in 2002. Prince is averaging 7.6 points this season.

Detroit made another deal Thursday as well. The Pistons acquired guard Reggie Jackson from Oklahoma City in a three-way trade that also involved Utah. Detroit sent guard DJ Augustin, forward Kyle Singler and a 2019 second-round draft pick to the Thunder. Detroit also sent a 2017 second-rounder to the Jazz.

Prince was one of Detroit's steadiest players for about a decade, averaging double figures in scoring and defending well on a team that made the Eastern Conference finals every year from 2003 to 2008. The Pistons went into decline after that, and they were in full rebuilding mode when Prince was traded two years ago.

The Pistons started 5-23 this season, but after waiving high-priced forward Josh Smith in late December, they surged back into playoff contention. Detroit is two games out of the final playoff spot in the East heading into Friday night's game against Chicago.

Now Detroit's lineup looks quite a bit different from the beginning of the season. Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond are still mainstays inside, but Smith is gone, and the Pistons lost point guard Brandon Jennings last month to an Achilles injury. Augustin played well in Jennings' absence, and now it's Jackson and Prince who will try to contribute to a playoff push.

Prince started 76 games for the Grizzlies last season, and although he's been primarily a reserve for Memphis and Boston in 2014-15, he's still averaging 23.6 minutes.

Toronto Raptors at Atlanta Hawks (-4.5, 204.5)

The Atlanta Hawks look to earn their NBA-leading 44th victory when they host the Toronto Raptors on Friday. The Hawks are keen to continue where they left off before the All-Star Break as they won 26 of their last 31 contests, including a franchise-record 19 straight from Dec. 27 to Jan. 31 to open up a 10-game lead atop the Southeast Division. Atlanta is currently riding a 12-game home winning streak and sets its sights on beating the Raptors for the second consecutive time.

Toronto set a franchise mark for wins before the All-Star Break with 36 and holds a commanding 13.5-game lead over its nearest rival in the Atlantic Division. The Raptors have won three consecutive games, but will be put to the test in a grueling road gauntlet that will see them face four teams with winning records in five nights. Toronto has won its last four games away from the Air Canada Centre - scoring 120 or more points in its last two road tilts - and hopes to avenge a 110-89 loss to the Hawks on Jan. 16.

Davis has a sprained right shoulder which caused him to miss the last two games. He is questionable to return Friday against the Magic.

Top Under referee in Heat-Knicks crew Friday

David Guthrie, the top Under referee in the NBA, will be part of the crew officiating the game between the Miami Heats and New York Knicks Friday evening.

In games with Guthrie officiating, the Over/Under clip is 11-28. The home team is averaging 99.0 points per game, while the visiting team averages 98.1 for an average total score of 197.1.

The total for this matchup is currently off the board.

Totals trend every NBA bettor should keep an eye on

The Under has been the hot play when it comes to the Association, with teams playing below the oddsmakers’ number nearly 54 percent of the time. That clip isn’t exactly storming the sportsbook. But over the past 30 days, NBA games have gone 93-129 Over/Under (58 percent), including a 47-62 O/U count (57 percent) in the two weeks leading up to the All-Star break. Teams have combined to score an average of 197.1 points per game against an average total of 199.3 points in that two-week span – which sits just below the NBA scoring average of 199.8 points per contest.

Like most trends, oddsmakers expect this decisive lean toward the Under to balance out before the end of the regular season. And when it does, it won’t be because of their knee-jerk reaction to the number of game cashing in for the Under. Peter Korner, founder of the Nevada-based oddsmaking service The Sports Club, says it is business as usual when it comes to setting the totals for nightly NBA action.

“Recent results are the biggest thing for us when making the numbers,” Korner tells Covers. “If there is a trend, we might follow it. But those trends have just as much to do with performance as they do the number, and we follow performance.”

Korner says that most trends come and go and that these leans, one way or the other, do level themselves out. However, his team won’t be simply adjusting their totals based on how many times the Under has come through – unless the books were getting beat up by Under bettors.

“If things are going Under and the books are getting shellacked by the Under, then we would be concerned,” he says. “But just because something keeps coming through doesn’t mean that everyone is betting it. And we’d much prefer the games to keep going Under than Over, we’re glad to hear that. The squares and parlays generally bet the Over and it would be a little problematic if the Over was hitting like that.”

As of Thursday night, only seven NBA teams have paid out more on the Over than the Under - Indiana, Toronto, Atlanta, Minnesota, New Orleans, Phoenix and Boston - and just the Pacers are topping the total at more than 55 percent with a 31-22-1 Over/Under record. On the other end of the scale, there are 13 teams playing Under the number at better than 55 percent, led by Philadelphia (18-35-0 O/U), Cleveland (20-34-1 O/U), Brooklyn (20-32-0 O/U), and Miami (20-32-0 O/U).

That Under run in NBA action hasn’t caught on with the general tourist crowd in Las Vegas, where most shops are still seeing more public money on the Over. According to Nick Bogdanovich, U.S. director of trading for William Hill in Nevada, it would take a lot more than a trend to trim their NBA totals.

“If there was a rule change or if refs all of sudden were calling it really tight, then obviously we would adjust. But that pattern (of the public betting the Over) is still there,” Bogdanovich tells Covers. “The pros control the market and we’re adjusting off what they do. If they start betting the Under more, we’ll have to adjust our numbers a little lower.”

That’s all good and well for bookmakers who draw the majority of their handle from the average sports bettor. But what happens when the bulk of your customer base is considered “wiseguys” and have a more educated approach to betting, especially totals – the most popular play among sharps.

Scott Kaminsky, sportsbook director at online market TheGreek.com, deals with a very wise clientele and says NBA Unders have been the popular play – more popular than the Over – so far this season. While public bettors generally flock to the Over, hoping for an exciting high-scoring game to watch, his customers normally pick and choose their spots.

“They’ve bet the Under more than they’ve bet the Over this year, for sure,” Kaminsky tells Covers. “We’re probably down a little bit (with NBA totals), but we’re tuned into the trends and how the smart guys are betting and we adjust in a timely fashion.”

If you’re looking to jump on this Under trend going into the second half of the schedule, do so with some caution. Over the past 10 seasons, the Over has been the more frequent result – just slightly – following the All-Star break with a 2,211-2,188-53 Over/Under record. Games have averaged 199.5 points against an average total of 198.9 in that span.

Oddsmakers and books will also be trimming their totals when it comes to games with playoff implications down the stretch. The final 10-15 games on a projected playoff team’s schedule could have slimmer numbers when taking on foes also battling for postseason position.

“We take a wait and see approach with a lot of things like this,” says Korner. “And if you weren’t betting the Under, then maybe you missed the boat.”

                          • Friday's Tip Sheet

                            February 20, 2015

Raptors at Hawks – 7:30 PM EST

Atlanta put together a remarkable 19-game winning streak through December and January, but the Hawks have split their past six contests. Mike Budenholtzer’s club won 12 straight away games during that hot stretch, including a 110-89 blowout of the Raptors as two-point favorites on January 16 to beat Toronto for the first time in three meetings this season. However, the Hawks have stumbled on the highway of late, losing three of their past four away from Philips Arena, while scoring 88 points or less in defeats at Memphis and Boston.

The Raptors finished the first half on a three-game winning streak, which included victories over the Spurs, Clippers, and Wizards at home. Since getting blown out at home by the Hawks in mid-January, Dwane Casey’s squad captured wins in 10 of their next 14 games to put the Atlantic Division race out of reach. Since a disastrous end to a West Coast trip in early January with three straight losses, Toronto has won five of its past six road contests, while cashing the ‘over’ in each of the last three away games (two of those games did go to overtime).

Bulls at Pistons – 7:30 PM EST

The All-Star break benefited the Bulls by giving budding star Jimmy Butler a few more days of rest after suffering a shoulder injury in a collision against Sacramento last week. Hopefully the hiatus for Chicago didn’t ruin any of its momentum, as the Bulls are riding a four-game winning streak since a three-game skid. Chicago’s defense has stepped up during this hot stretch by limiting all four opponents to 98 points or less, while finishing ‘under’ the total in five of the past six games.

The Pistons made several moves at the trade deadline, which includes acquiring Reggie Jackson from the Thunder to replace the injured Brandon Jennings at point guard for the remainder of the season. Detroit split its final eight games before the All-Star break, as the Pistons have lost each of their past two home contests to the Spurs and Wolves. These two old rivals haven’t seen each other since November, as the Bulls held off the Pistons at the United Center, 102-91 as 9 ½-point favorites.

Cavaliers at Wizards – 8:00 PM EST

Cleveland stubbed its toe in the final game before the break in a 113-98 defeat at Chicago, but the Cavaliers have found their groove with victories in 14 of their last 16 trips to the court. Unfortunately for David Blatt’s squad, those two setbacks came on the highway to the Bulls and Pacers, but the Cavs have won eight of their previous 12 road games with LeBron James in the lineup. Cleveland and Washington have split a pair of matchups this season, with the home team winning each time by double-digits, including a 91-78 victory by the Wizards at the Verizon Center in November.

The Wizards were pointspread poison to wrap up January and going into early February by failing to cover nine straight games. However, Washington has cashed three consecutive contests, while winning each of its past two home games against Brooklyn and Orlando in blowout fashion. Bradley Beal likely won’t return to the Washington lineup after missing the last three games with a right leg injury, but the Wizards own a 9-3 SU and 7-5 ATS record without their starting shooting guard this season.

Rockets at Mavericks – 8:30 PM EST

The battle of the Lone Star State takes place at the American Airlines Center as Dallas looks to rebound from a 104-89 loss at Oklahoma City last night to a short-handed Thunder squad. The Mavs were held to 36% shooting, while Rajon Rondo’s return to the lineup didn’t help out Dallas, as the former Boston point guard shot just 2-of-9 from the floor after missing six games with a facial injury. Dallas returns home where it owns a 1-5-2 ATS record in its past eight contests at the AAC, while losing in this span to the Rockets, Clippers, and Grizzlies.

Houston has taken care of Dallas twice at home this season, winning a pair of low-scoring games at the Toyota Center, but the Rockets have dropped three of their last four visits to Big D. Kevin McHale’s club opens up a five-game homestand on Saturday against Toronto, as the Rockets have won four of their last six games away from Houston. The defense didn’t finish the first half on a positive note, allowing at least 108 points in four straight games, resulting in three ‘overs.’

Spurs at Warriors – 10:30 PM EST

San Antonio continues its annual “Rodeo Road Trip” as the Spurs play on the second end of a back-to-back following last night’s 119-115 setback to the Clippers as three-point favorites. The Spurs shot 51% from the floor in the loss, while Kawhi Leonard brought that percentage down by himself with a 1-for-11 effort, including 0-for-6 from three-point range. You never know how Gregg Popovich will approach any game from a “resting starters” standpoint, but the Spurs own a 10-5 record with no rest this season, which includes a 113-100 triumph at Golden State as 8 ½-point underdogs back in November.

Golden State put together the best record in the league in the first half at 42-9, but for some reason the Warriors haven’t figured out how to beat the Spurs over the years. The Warriors have lost eight of the past nine matchups with the Spurs, including four straight defeats at Oracle Arena. Steve Kerr’s team ended the first half with a 3-1 road trip, but are home for just tonight’s contest before heading back on the highway for six more games starting Sunday in Indiana. Since losing to San Antonio on November 11, Golden State has won 21 of its last 22 games at home, while covering 16 times in this stretch.
