Pedro also had to face a DH every turn in the order vs facing an opposing pitcher too. Another HUGE reason as to why his numbers are remarkable. That simply can't be overlooked!

i am a braves fan but i would have to go with Maddux because of course i saw him pitch every week. This was back in the day where you had to watch this week in baseball to be able to see the other league.I remember checking box scores every morning and collecting baseball cards just to put a face on the names that i read in box scores.

Truthfully guys stats can only take you so far.i know its the only way you can judge players but this is a good point in showing you that stats alone does not only matter.

This pitcher lost a career 292 games.
He played for a very good team most of his career

***this pitcher lost a career 292 games.
***his 162 game avg based on career stats was
                ****14 wins 13 losses 3.19 era
****his k/bb ratio is only 2.04
[seaver had 2.62 clemens ad 2.92]
****he only lead the league in era twice
***this pitcher had some night he was good but was not consistent and some night was terrible.
He walked way to many people.
****this pitcher never ever won a cy young

and let me say this one more time his average for 162 games is 14 wins 13 losses thats 14-13 with a 3.19 era

now if i ask people on hear name the top 5 greatest pitchers everyone will have this guy listed in the top 3 but truthfully these stats show he should not even be in the hall of fame with a 14-13 avg but arguably the greatest pitcher of all time

                his name is nolan ryan

surprises me that you would pick pedro over clemens.i figured if you had 1 guy to chose from boston that it would be clemens.i agree about pedro he was a stud for those 5-7 years and was almost unhittable but would you pick pedro over clemens

Tech, you said the best 4 years in history. Well, the numbers say pedro was better in his 4 year stretch that started 2 years after maddux. I know it is a favorite team thing but the numbers back pedro up as being better than maddux was and when you add in the dh over a 4 year span and the ballparks, I don't think its even close. Facing a high priced dh 4 times a games vs a horrible hitting sacraficing pitcher makes it not even close, again based on that and numbers.

I agree Pedro was grewT and his 4 year span was better than I ever thought but as I said talking about an Ryan that sometimes numbers don't tell the entire story. If I had to choose 1 pitcher to start for me it would be Maddux now it might be I dare him pitch many times in pressure situations or not sure what it is but in my opinion you can't. Just look at numbers.

I agree its not all about numbers jerry but when you said it was the best 4 year stretch in history, what did you do? You provided numbers to back it up. I did the same thing.

Numbers aside, maddux never had to do it in the A.L. and pedro did. It is much tougher to pitch than it is in the N.L. with no dh and when it is 309 feet down the left field line in fenway, a fly ball is off the wall and a single or double when it is an out in atlanta. Those are 2 huge disadvantages pedro had and he STILL put up better numbers!

Thanks to TBS back in the day, I saw a ton of atlanta games and maddux. He was no doubt a great pitcher but in those 4 years, pedro was simply amazing and he had the wow factor from blowing people away. Maddux never even had 200 k's in any of those 4 years and pedro had over 300 twice and well over 200 in the other 2. When maddux pitched, you knew he would spot corners and get the win. When pedro pitched he had people looking at each other saying wow!

I agree Wayne looking back Pedro was a stud those 4 yrs even better than Maddux .For his career personally I would put out Maddux. But like I said I am a bravest fan so things different. It seems to me everytime we needed a win Maddux would get it for us.Whether we had lost 4 straight and bullpen was tired Mad Dog would go 9 and get the win and get the team back on a winning streak.I guess my opinion on Pedro faded after his last couple years but you are right Pedro 4 year streak is probably better than anyone in history.Really did.not.remember him being that great. He was in the Expos farm system wasn't he.I am thinking he came up with the.Expos.
