13) Unusually busy week for August:
— Baseball pennant races
— First week of NFL exhibition games
— NBA Summer League, which is usually in mid-July.

Lot of good stuff going on; in this area, the horses are in Saratoga, too.

12) Rick Scott is the acting GM of the New York Mets, who currently have 16 guys on the IL; when asked by the media why all these soft tissue injuries are happening to their players, Scott threw the Mets’ players under the proverbial bus.

“Most of the time, I’ll be honest, it’s compliance issues. Actually following the plan because these are all individuals and control their own bodies. Sometimes they’re not as compliant as they should be.”

When a team is floundering, then the interim GM doesn’t defend the players, makes you wonder if that is coming straight from the owner’s box.

11) Hadn’t thought about this until I heard a talking head discussing it, but how on God’s green earth is Mike Holmgren not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame?

10) Dallas Mavericks’ star Luka Doncic signed a 5-year, $207M contract; right now, there are 11 NBA players who will be making $40M+ next season. If a player is making $41M a year, that works out to $500,000 a game, pretty good cash to shoot hoops.

9) Dennis Schroder signed a 1-year, $5.9M deal with the Celtics Tuesday, which sounds pretty good, until you remember that Schroder turned down a 4-year, $84M deal with the Lakers last winter.

8) Felt old watching Cole Anthony play in Orlando’s summer league game Tuesday from Las Vegas; his dad Greg Anthony was a great player at UNLV— his name is on a banner up in the rafters at the Thomas & Mack Center.

7) On May 21, Tampa Bay traded SS Willie Adames to Milwaukee in a 4-player deal; at the time, Adames was hitting .197 with a .625 OPS.

In 67 games since the trade, Adames is hitting .293 with a .930 OPS. Advantage, Brewers.

6) Going to be a fun time coming up for Shohei Ohtani’s agent; Ohtani is making $3M this year, $5.5M next year, then he goes to arbitration before the 2023 season, before breaking the bank the following winter. If he keeps going the way he is, he’s going to be making serious $$$.

5) Tampa Bay Rays are 69-44, lead AL East by five games; if every baseball game this year was five innings instead of nine, the Rays would be 44-43-26— they’ve improved by 25 wins in innings 5-9 this season. Last four games, they outscored opponents 25-2 from innings 7-9.

4) Valparaiso University switched its school mascot from Crusaders to “Beacons” this week, with the new logo a lighthouse shining a bright light.

3) New Orleans Saints’ kicker Will Lutz will miss the start of the season with a core muscle injury that required surgery. Saints signed Brett Maher to replace him; Maher was the Dallas kicker in 2018-19.

1) Long time ago, back in the 90’s, I coached Little League for a few years; some of it was fun- the kids were good to deal with, the parents were not.

We played at a field where the dugouts were next to each other on the third base line— there was a hill that ran down the first base line, so the two dugouts could pretty much hear everything that was said.

We’re playing a division rival, and their 3B is having a rough time; he missed a couple balls, and their coach is getting on the kid pretty good, unusually so. Finally, the kid had enough; he turns to the coach and snaps, “Hey!!! You’re the one that put me here!!!”

I had to walk pretty far away until I stopped laughing; one of the great lines ever.

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud…….

13) Turner Sports’ Ernie Johnson spoke to Alabama’s football team recently; it is a 5-minute talk and it is inspirational, a great, low-key talk about how everyone has value. Everyone.

Do yourself a favor and find it on Twitter; Alabama Football is one Twitter page that I know has it, but lot of people liked it and re-tweeted it. It is smart and uplifting and just nice. We need more nice in our world.

12) If you were a Vikings’ fan, would the Kirk Cousins situation bother you? Guy makes $27.5M a year to be your team leader, but he endangers his own health and others around him by not getting the vaccine. Have to be players/coaches who are squeamish being around him.

Vikings fired their offensive line coach this summer because he wouldn’t get the vaccine; to no one’s surprise, players, especially QB’s, carry lot more weight than assistant coaches.

11) Indianapolis Colts extended the contracts of GM Chris Ballard, head coach Frank Reich thru 2026; now they need their quarterback to get healthy.

10) Watching the first episode of HBO’s Hard Knocks the other night, I still laugh when I realize that the narrator of Hard Knocks in Liev Schrieber, the guy who played Ray Donovan on a great Showtime series.

Mr Schrieber doesn’t talk with a Boston accent like Ray Donovan; I had no idea it was him until someone told me, then I saw his name in the credits.

9) Dallas Cowboys are featured on Hard Knocks this summer; they’re -145 to make the playoffs, +115 to miss out on the playoffs. Dak Prescott is getting another MRI on his shoulder, which has to worry any Cowboy fans out there.

They showed the scars on his leg from last year’s injury; turns out he had two surgeries to fix the leg, something they didn’t talk about last year.

8) Brewers 10, Cubs 0— Corbin Burnes tied a major league record (Tom Seaver/Aaron Nola) by striking out ten consecutive Cubs. Chicago is 10-31 in its last 41 games; no bueno.

What exactly are the Cubs doing? They’re not the Pirates or the A’s, small market teams who have less revenue than most teams, they’re in a huge market with their own TV channel that it costs people to subscribe to. Who wants to pay to watch this collection of scrubs?

What is their plan going forward? Hard to believe they’ll be any good next year; they have one really good outfield prospect in the minors, but their immediate future is bleak, unless they go out and spend lot of money in free agency.

7) Tigers 5, Orioles 2— Baltimore had given up 9+ runs six games in a row, the longest such streak since since Seattle in 2008.

6) I watch a lot of baseball; seems to me that veteran catchers get an occasional close call or two from the home plate ump when they’re batting. Don’t have concrete numbers to back this up, just lot of observations. Travis d’Arnaud just got two in one at-bat while I was typing this.

Catchers can’t bitch about not getting a close call when they’re behind the plate, if they just got a close call while they were hitting. Human nature.

3) Golfer Webb Simpson is favored to win the PGA Tour event this week; his caddy is Paul Tesori, a former touring pro- he told someone on the Interweb that Simpson is carrying four different wedges in his bag this week. First time he’s ever done that.

2) The late Bobby Bowden went 20-9-1 as a head coach in bowl games; from 1982-95, he went 13-0-1 in bowls. It was automatic, no research needed; in those days, you took your hard earned money and bet on the Seminoles in bowl games.

I tried Subway this week because I happened to be parked near one, but they wouldn’t accept the goofy coupon that would’ve saved me a dollar. They have commercials with big shots like Tom Brady and Serena Williams; accept the freakin’ coupons.
