                  STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                  STREAKING

Dakota Hudson, St. Louis Cardinals (13-6, 3.47 ERA, $994):
The Cardinals have been rolling lately, going 16-5 in their last 21 home games and 6-1 over their previous seven games overall. Hudson has been a big reason for their success, going three straight starts without giving up a single run. During that three-game span he's allowed just seven hits over 18 2-3 innings. The Cards are an incredible 15-3 in Hudson's last 18 starts.

Today, Hudson and the Cardinals are hosting the Cincinnati Reds and starter Trevor Bauer. Bauer has been awful since being acquired by Cincy, with an ERA of 7.62 and a WHIP of 1.58 while the Reds have gone 1-4 in his five starts. The Cardinals are small home faves at -116 and are definitely worth the price given how each starting pitcher is trending.

                  SLUMPING

Jose Suarez, Los Angeles Angels (2-5, 6.67 ERA, $-658):
The 21-year-old lefthander is struggling in his first year as a pro. Over his last five starts he has an ERA of 9.00 and a WHIP of 2.05. Suarez will have a tough matchup tonight as the Angels host the Boston Red Sox who lead the majors in batting average (.277) and are third in runs per game (5.78).

The BoSox will give the ball to Nathan Eovaldi and the Over has gone 7-1-2 over his last 10 starts. With the Over also hitting in eight of the Angels last 10 home games and going 9-2-1 in Suarez's previous 12 starts the Over 10.5 looks like a good play.

                  CUBS COOKING AT HOME

The Brewers are still in the NL Central race and enter a crucial three-game series on the road against the Cubs. With 10 of their next 16 games against the Cubs and Cardinals, who are both ahead of them in the division race, the Brew Crew will need to start winning soon.

Milwaukee is a +125 underdog for this afternoon's matchup and most trends are pointing towards a Cubs victory. Milwuakee is 2-8 in it's last 10 road games against a team with a winning record and 1-4 in Chase Anderson's previous five starts on the road. The Cubs are 8-3 in their last 11 games and 8-2 in Jose Quintana's previous 10 starts.

Chicago is also 40-19 in their previous 59 games at home and 5-0 in the last five meetings between these two sides at Wrigley Field. The Cubs offer good value on the moneyline at -145.

                  SUPER NOVA

Ivan Nova is coming off a 4-0 loss to the Texas Rangers but he only allowed one earned run through 5 2-3 innings in that game. Over his last seven starts the White Sox have gone 6-1 and Nova has an incredible ERA of 0.94.

Nova and the White Sox are in an interleague matchup today as they travel to Atlanta to face the Braves and southpaw Max Fried. Fried is 14-4 with a 4.03 ERA and has a sparking 3.29 ERA over his five starts in August.

The Under has gone 9-2 in the Braves last 11 games and has cashed in four of Chicago's last five contests. With the O/U installed at 9.5 tonight, the Under is worth a look.

                  GRUDGE MATCH

We've got a grudge match in Detroit as Twins starter Kyle Gibson faces off against Tigers right-hander Edwin Jackson for the second time within seven days. Gibson and the Twins won 8-5 in Minnesota last Saturday and Jackson was shelled for six runs in five innings.

Jackson has been pretty awful all season going 3-7 with an 8.70 ERA and a WHIP of 1.87. Gibson is 12-6 with a 4.49 ERA but he's been pretty bad over his last four starts going 1-2 with a 7.17 ERA and a 1.78 WHIP. The Twins are massive -268 faves but given that the Twins average a league-best 5.88 runs per game (and an even higher 6.25 runs/game on the road) the Over 10 might be the better play.

                  • Profar leads Athletics to an 8-2 victory over the Yankees
                    August 30, 2019
                    By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Jurickson Profar delivered two tiebreaking hits to atone for his role in the double-reversal of a double play, and the Oakland Athletics beat the New York Yankees 8-2 Friday night.

Profar connected in the second for a 1-0 lead and added a two-run double in the sixth for a 4-2 edge. That made up for his flawed footwork as the pivot on a blown double play in the fourth that led to a Yankees run.

Oakland pulled within a half-game of Cleveland for the top AL wild card, and held its one-game edge over Tampa Bay for the second.

New York ended a four-game winning streak hours after placing Gio Urshela on the 10-day injured list, giving the club a record 29 players on the IL this season.

CC Sabathia was pulled after three innings with a recurrence of his on-going knee issues, and Tommy Kahnle (3-1) allowed three runs in the sixth.

Oakland left-hander Brett Anderson (11-9) pitched two-run ball over six innings. He allowed six hits, struck out one and induced 14 groundouts.

Struggling former closer Blake Treinen pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for Oakland. He struck out two, and Profar made a diving stop and two-hop throw on Romine's grounder to end it.

                    RAYS 4, INDIANS 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Austin Pruitt and three relievers combined on a five-hitter, Jesus Aguilar had a three-run homer during a four-run seventh inning and Tampa Bay beat Cleveland in a matchup of playoff contenders.

Pruitt allowed four hits and struck out six over 5 1/3 innings in his first start since Aug, 28, 2017. Oliver Drake (3-1) gave up one hit in 1 2/3 innings before Colin Poche and Andrew Kittredge each worked an inning.

Austin Meadows singled off Shane Bieber (12-7) leading off the seventh and went to third on a base hit by Travis d'Arnaud. One out later, Avisail Garcia hit an RBI single that ended Bieber's night. Aguilar made it 4-0 with his three-run blast off Adam Cimber.

Bieber gave up three runs and six hits, and struck out nine over 6 1/3 innings.

                    METS 11, PHILLIES 5

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Todd Frazier hit a pair of three-run homers and tied his career-best with six RBIs, and New York beat Philadelphia, snapping a six-game losing streak.

Michael Conforto also went deep for the Mets, who also snapped a six-game losing streak in Philadelphia.

The Phillies fell 3 + games behind the Cubs for the second wild-card spot in the NL. The Mets are five games back.

Mets starter Zack Wheeler and Phillies ace Aaron Nola pitched well before turning it over to the bullpens. Philadelphia's imploded, allowing 10 runs while recording eight outs.

Mike Morin (1-1) took the loss.

Justin Wilson (4-1) tossed a scoreless inning for the win after Wheeler gave up one run and seven hits in six innings

J.T. Realmuto had two sacrifice flies for the Phillies.

                    ASTROS 7, BLUE JAYS 4

TORONTO (AP) - George Springer homered and drove in four runs as Houston beat Toronto.

The Astros won for the 10th time in 12 games following a five-game losing streak.

Springer's 29th homer was a three-run drive in the fifth inning, and every Astros starter had at least one hit as Houston finished with 13 hits against five pitchers.

Cavan Biggio, Reese McGuire and Derek Fisher hit solo home runs, but the Blue Jays lost for the ninth time in 11 games.

Toronto rookie Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was ejected by plate umpire Mike Estabrook for arguing balls and strikes in the seventh.

Collin McHugh (4-5) got one out and earned the win.

Trent Thornton (4-9) is winless in five starts since an Aug. 1 victory at Baltimore. The former Astros farmhand allowed four runs, three earned, and six hits in five innings.

                    TWINS 13, TIGERS 5

DETROIT (AP) - C.J. Cron homered and Jorge Polanco had three hits as Minnesota beat Detroit.

The Twins have won five straight, including the first four of a 10-game road trip, and lead the Cleveland Indians by 4 1/2 games in the AL Central.

Cron hit Minnesota's 262nd homer in the fourth inning, moving them within five of the major-league record of 267, set last year by the New York Yankees.

John Hicks and Ronny Rodriguez homered for the Tigers, who have lost six in a row. Detroit still needs five wins in its last 16 games at Comerica Park to avoid becoming the first modern major-league team to lose 60 times at home.

Kyle Gibson (13-6) picked up the win despite allowing four runs and 10 hits in five innings.

Tigers starter Edwin Jackson (3-8) allowed eight runs - six earned - with seven hits and three walks in 2 1/3 innings.

                    CUBS 7, BREWERS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Nicholas Castellanos hit a pair of two-run homers, Jose Quintana took a shutout into the sixth inning, and Chicago cruised to its fourth straight win.

Castellanos went deep off Chase Anderson in each of his first two at-bats.

Kyle Schwarber added his team-leading 32nd homer, and third in five games, in the eighth.

The Brewers dropped their fourth game in five and fell to five games behind the Cubs, who hold the second wild-card slot.

Quintana (12-8) allowed four hits and walked two before being relieved by David Phelps with two outs in the sixth.

Quintana also drove in a run with a double, the first extra-base hit of his career. Victor Caratini had two hits and an RBI.

Anderson (6-4) allowed five runs and seven hits through four innings.

                    BRAVES 10, WHITE SOX 7

ATLANTA (AP) - Max Fried pitched six-plus innings and won his sixth straight decision, Tyler Flowers hit a three-run homer and Atlanta beat Chicago.

Freddie Freeman drove in two runs and Ozzie Albies went 4 for 5 to help the NL East-leading Braves, who have won 10 of 12 to stay 5+ games up in the division.

Fried (15-4) faced the minimum before Eloy Jimenez reached with one out in the fifth on a slow-rolling single down the line at third. The 25-year-old lefty allowed five hits and four runs and matched a career high with 11 strikeouts.

Chicago starter Ivan Nova (9-11) allowed eight hits and five runs - four earned - in four innings. Welington Castillo had a pinch-hit, three-run homer.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Anthony Rendon lined a two-run single with one out in the ninth inning and Washington rallied past Miami for its seventh win in eight games.

Rendon had three hits and drove in three runs, giving him 107 RBIs for the NL wild-card leaders. The Marlins set a franchise record with their 13th straight road loss.

After Starlin Castro hit a two-run homer off Daniel Hudson (8-3, 2-0 with Washington) in the top of the ninth for a 6-5 lead, the Nationals bounced back.

Ryne Stanek (0-3, 0-2 for the Marlins) took the loss.

Harold Ramirez homered and had two singles for the Marlins.

                    RANGERS 6, MARINERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Rougned Odor snapped an 0-for-28 slump with an early game-tying RBI double, Danny Santana hit his 24th homer and Texas beat Seattle.

Lefty Kolby Allard (3-0) worked 5 2/3 innings in his fifth start for Texas. He allowed two runs while striking out four and walking one.

Marco Gonzales (14-11) took the loss. He allowed six runs in his 5 2/3 innings. He struck out two and walked two.

Hard-throwing rookie Emmanuel Clase, the fourth Texas pitcher, worked the ninth for his first career save.

Mallex Smith had a hand in all of Seattle's runs, scoring twice and driving in one.

                    ORIOLES 14, ROYALS 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Local product John Means won back home with seven strong innings, Hanser Alberto got a career-high five hits and Baltimore defeated Kansas City.

Pedro Severino had four of the Orioles' 21 hits in their highest-scoring game of the season. Jonathan Villar stole three bases, including a swipe of home when the Royals tried to pick him off third base.

Jorge Soler hit his 38th home run, tying the Royals record set by Mike Moustakas in 2017.

The Brewers dropped their fourth game in five and fell to five games behind the Cubs, who hold the second wild-card slot.

Quintana (12-8) allowed four hits and walked two before being relieved by David Phelps with two outs in the sixth.

Saturday’s List of 13: Our first look at college basketball for this season

I don’t go grocery shopping much, because I never cook, but while getting some junk food Friday, guess what was there? The Athlon college basketball magazine for 2019-20, already on newsstands on August 30. Here is what I learned from scanning this fine magazine:

                          13) Top 4 coaching hires:
                          — Fred Hoiberg, Nebraska— His grandfather was once Nebraska’s head coach. He might be the only person in America who would turn down the UCLA basketball job for this.
                          — Eric Musselman, Arkansas— My first instinct was that this is a bad fit, but he was great at Nevada and he coached two NBA teams.
                          — Buzz Williams, Texas A&M— He got Virginia Tech to the NCAA’s the last three years; they had been there twice in the previous 30 years. Va Tech is a football school, too.
                          — Nate Oats, Alabama— Went 31-5 in MAC last two years; his job is to entertain the locals until spring football starts.

                          12) UCLA butchered its coaching search; they wound up with Mick Cronin, who is a solid coach but Bruin fans are going to hate his defense-first style (or lack of style).

Last six years, Cronin’s Cincinnati teams’ national rank in tempo (out of 351 or 353 teams):
                          328-339-333-330-330-338

From 2006-08, Ben Howland made the Final Four three years in a row; from that point on, AFTER he made the Final Four three years in a row, UCLA went 58-32 in Pac-12 games, but only 2-3 in NCAA tourney games- they told Howland to take a hike. Why?!?!?!?!?

Cincinnati made the NCAA’s the last nine years, but since 2013, they’re 3-4 in 1st round, 0-3 in the 2nd round, and never made an Elite 8 under Cronin. Uh-oh.

                          11) There are 354 Division I teams this year; Merrimack joins the NEC this year, after Cal Baptist joined the WAC and North Alabama joined the Atlantic Sun.

                          10) Keep in mind that the 3-point line has been moved back 16.75 inches, to the international distance of 22 feet, 1.75 inches. The NBA arc is 23 feet, 9 inches.

They used the longer international arc in the NIT last spring; teams shot 2.2% lower behind the arc than they did in the regular season.

                          9) Five coaches on the hot seat:
                          — Dave Leitao, DePaul— LY’s 19-17 mark was their best in 12 years, but then the NCAA came calling. Last 4 years, Blue Demons are 16-56 in Big East games, and they’re cheating. Oy.
                          — Danny Manning, Wake Forest- Deacons are 24-66 in ACC games under his watch.
                          — Matt McCall, UMass— When you finish 13th two years in a row in a league called the Atlantic 10 (they have 14 teams), your job is going to be in jeopardy.
                          — Shaka Smart, Texas— His Longhorn teams are 31-41 in Big X games, and they don’t play the same fast-paced style his great VCU teams played. Why?
                          — Patrick Chambers, Penn State— 8 years, 0 NCAA bids; last year, 8 of 14 Big 14 teams made the NCAA’s. PSU is a football school, but Chambers still needs to show progress.

                          8) Gonzaga is the only team in the country that has made the Sweet 16 the last five years.

                          7) Athlon Sports top 6 teams for this season:
                          6— Memphis Tigers
                          5— Florida Gators
                          4— Louisville Cardinals
                          3— Kentucky Wildcats
                          2— Duke Blue Devils
                          1— Michigan State Spartans

                          6) Brad Brownell has been Clemson’s coach for nine years; in four of those years, Clemson finished .500+ in ACC games but didn’t make the NCAA’s. They need to win more games in December, but they were in the Sweet 16 two years ago. Brownell is a good coach whose job is a tough one- they lost five of their top six scorers from last year’s 20-14 team.

                          5) Five most impactful freshmen this year:
5— Nico Mannion, Arizona- Scoring PG whose dad played in the NBA.
4— Anthony Edwards, Georgia- 5-star recruit from talent-rich Atlanta.
3— James Wiseman, Memphis- 7-1 center who needs work on offense.
2— Isaiah Stewart, Washington- Young man from Rochester, NY is long way from home.
1— Cole Anthony, North Carolina- His dad Greg was UNLV’s PG in the Tark glory days.

                          4) Some programs win no matter who the coach is.. Check out VCU’s record:
                          1999-2002— Mack McCarthy, 65-55, 35-32 in CAA
                          2002-06— Jeff Capel, 79-41, 50-22 in CAA
                          2006-09— Anthony Grant, 76-25, 45-9 in CAA
                          2009-15— Shaka Smart, 163-56, 38-16 in CAA, 36-14 in A-14
                          2015-17— Will Wade, 51-20, 28-8 in A-14
                          2017-19— Mike Rhoades, 43-23, 25-11 in A-14

                          3) Five of this year’s better transfers:
                          — Omer Yurtseven, NC State to Georgetown- Scored 13.5 ppg for the Wolfpack.
                          — Quade Green, Kentucky to Washington- Will be Huskies’ PG after the 1st semester.
                          — Malachi Flynn, Washington St to San Diego St— Scored 15.8 ppg for the Coogs.
                          — Koby McEwen, Utah State to Marquette— Bolted Logan after they fired the coach.
                          — Jalen Harris, Louisiana Tech to Nevada— Wolf Pack literally wouldn’t have been able to field a team the day they hired Steve Alford. Harris scored 15.3 ppg his last year at Tech.

                          2) Under Chris Beard, Texas Tech is 8-2 in NCAA tourney games; before Beard became Tech’s coach, Tech was 8-16 all-time in NCAA tourney games.

                          1) Georgetown played the fastest tempo games of any Big East team last year, playing the 25th-fastest tempo in the whole country. I wonder what John Thompson thinks of that?

Patrick Ewing has changed the Hoyas’ program into one that plays fast, which helps recruiting— Hoyas are 34-29 under Ewing, 14-22 in Big East games, but they were 19-14, 9-9 LY. They’ll be an interesting team to watch this winter.

                          • LEADING OFF: Sabathia again aching, Naquin hurt, Twins slug
                            August 31, 2019
                            By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Saturday:

                            SIGHS FOR SABATHIA

The Yankees are hoping the end hasn't come sooner than expected for CC Sabathia.

The 39-year-old left-hander was pulled from a start against Oakland on Friday night with a recurrence of an achy right knee that's bothered him for years. Sabathia pitched three innings of one-run ball and exited after 48 pitches because the pain in his surgically repaired knee was ''a 10,'' he said.

Sabathia visited with a doctor during the game and believes he'll have the knee drained and get a cortisone shot. He still hopes to return this season but is waiting to be further evaluated.

He has said this will be his last season in the majors. He is 5-8 with a 4.93 ERA in 20 starts for the AL East leaders.

                            CHECK HIM

The Indians will see how left fielder Tyler Naquin is feeling, a day after he was carted off at Tampa Bay with a sprained right knee. Naquin was injured when he made a catch and ran full speed into the low wall in the corner.

''Obviously it didn't look good and we're very concerned, but we'll wait until we get the results,'' Cleveland manager Terry Francona said.

                            MINNY MIGHT

The Twins could break the single-season home run record with a crushing performance at Comerica Park.

C.J. Cron hit Minnesota's 262nd homer, moving the team within five of the major league record of 267 set last year by the New York Yankees.

The Twins have won five straight, including the first four of a 10-game road trip, and lead Cleveland by 4 1/2 games in the AL Central.

                            HEY, ROOK!

A's rookie Seth Brown has hits in seven straight at-bats, one shy of a team record last accomplished by Josh Reddick in 2016. Brown is the first Athletics player with 10 hits in his first five career games since Spook Jacobs had 10 with the Philadelphia A's in 1954.

Brown had a pinch-hit RBI double at Yankee Stadium on Friday night, stayed in the game to play left field and added two more hits.

                            FOREVER YOUNG IN TEXAS

The Texas Rangers will retire Michael Young's No. 10 jersey in a pregame ceremony. The franchise's career leader in games played, hits, runs, doubles and triples will be the fifth Ranger to have his jersey retired, and the second this season - Adrian Beltre's No. 29 was retired in June.

The other retired numbers are the No. 26 of former manager Johnny Oates, and the numbers of two Hall of Fame players - the No. 34 of strikeout king Nolan Ryan, and the No. 7 won by catcher Ivan ''Pudge'' Rodriguez. The Rangers' retired numbers are posted on a facade in left field.

Young, now a special assistant to the general manager, was a seven-time All-Star while playing in 1,823 games for Texas from 2000-12, and started at all four infield positions. He hit .300 or better seven times, winning the AL batting title in 2005. He won a Gold Glove at shortstop in 2008. He finished his career in 2013 with the Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers.

                            REMATCH

Yankees righty Domingo German (17-3, 4.03) has won eight of his past 10 starts and is closing in on a most-unexpected 20-win season. His only loss in that stretch came at Oakland on Aug. 20, when he allowed six runs in 5 1/3 innings.

He'll start at Yankee Stadium against A's righty Homer Bailey (12-8, 5.04), who handed German one of his three defeats while with Kansas City in April.
