          • Wednesday's NL Tip Sheet
            August 14, 2019
            By Kevin Rogers

            Cubs at Phillies (-115, 9) – 7:05 PM EST

Philadelphia (61-58) rebounded from a 2-5 road swing at Arizona and San Francisco to edge Chicago (64-55) on Tuesday, 4-2 in the opener of its three-game set at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies broke a late 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in the seventh and eighth inning, while Philadelphia won for the first time in three starts with Jason Vargas on the mound.

Chicago’s lead atop the NL Central has been trimmed to one game following last night’s loss combined with St. Louis’ 2-0 victory at Kansas City. The Cubs also dropped to 2-10 in their past 12 road series openers and 1-13 in the last 14 games off an away win dating back to mid-May. Since the end of May, Chicago has lost 25 of its past 36 contests away from Wrigley Field, while its last road series victory came at Washington back on May 19.

The Phillies swept the Mets in late June at home, which included back-to-back walk-off wins. Since then, Philadelphia has stumbled to an 8-9 record at Citizens Bank Park, while winning consecutive home games only once. The Phillies remain in the NL Wild Card race by sitting two games behind St. Louis for the second position, but the Brewers, Mets, and Diamondbacks are also in the mix.

Cole Hamels (6-3, 3.09 ERA) makes his first start at Citizens Bank Park since getting traded by the Phillies to the Rangers back in 2015. Hamels helped lead Philadelphia to the 2008 World Series title over Tampa Bay, but is back in the City of Brotherly Love making his third start since a stint on the injured list in July. The southpaw tossed only three innings in his last outing at Cincinnati, while allowing five runs and eight hits, but Chicago pulled away for a 12-5 win. The last time Hamels faced the Phillies at home on May 22, the Cubs rallied from a 3-0 deficit to pick up an 8-4 victory in spite of him giving up three runs in four innings.

The Phillies counter with their ace as Aaron Nola (10-3, 3.67 ERA) was outdueled by San Francisco’s Madison Bumgarner in his last outing in a 5-0 defeat last Thursday. Nola allowed three runs in five innings of work, but the Phillies had their four-game winning streak snapped in the right-hander’s past four outings. Nola defeated the Cubs at Wrigley two months ago in a 9-7 triumph as Philadelphia jumped out to a 7-0 lead. The Phillies have won four of Nola’s last five starts at Citizens Bank Park, but he lost to the Cubs at home last September in an 8-1 defeat as he allowed three home runs in less than six innings of work.

            Dodgers (-280, 8) at Marlins – 7:10 PM EST

Two teams reached the 80-win mark on the season last night. One was the Yankees, who improved to 80-41 with another blowout of the Orioles. The other club to reach that elite mark was the Dodgers (80-41), who continue to run away with the NL West after rolling past the Marlins (44-74) by a 15-1 rout to move to 4-0 this season against Miami. Since edging the Marlins in the first meeting, 2-1 at Dodger Stadium on July 19, Los Angeles has scored 10, 9, and 15 runs in the last three wins in the series. In Tuesday’s blowout, the Dodgers hit six home runs, including the 39th from MVP candidate Cody Bellinger.

Clayton Kershaw (11-2, 2.77 ERA) was scheduled to start on Tuesday, but was pushed back to tonight due to an extra day of rest. Kershaw is unbeaten in his last five outings, while allowing six earned runs in this span. The former Cy Young winner is fresh off home victories against the Padres and Cardinals, while last taking the mound on August 6 in a 3-1 triumph over St. Louis. Kershaw tossed six scoreless innings and struck out 10 batters in a 10-6 victory over Miami at Chavez Ravine on July 20 as a heavy -300 favorite.

The Marlins have dropped nine of their last 11 games, as one of the two wins in this span came in last Saturday’s dramatic comeback victory over Atlanta. Miami enters tonight’s action owning a 1-6 record in its last seven Game 2’s of a home series after dropping the series opener. Elieser Hernandez (2-4, 4.94 ERA) is coming off his best start of the season by scattering two hits in six scoreless innings last Thursday night in a 9-2 rout of the Braves as a +190 home underdog.

            Mets at Braves (-142, 10) – 7:20 PM EST

The race to the finish for the two Wild Card spots in the National League will be fun as seven teams are within striking distance. Three of those teams reside in the NL East (Nationals, Phillies, Mets), but the Wild Card is likely the best prize they will receive as the Braves (71-50) own a six-game advantage over Washington. Atlanta captured the first game of a three-game set at SunTrust Park in Tuesday’s 5-3 victory over New York (61-58) to send the Mets to their second consecutive loss following an incredible 15-1 run.

The Braves likely won’t catch the Dodgers for the best record in the National League, but Atlanta sits in a good position for the second-best mark by sitting six games better than Chicago, who paces the NL Central. Dating back to mid-July, the Braves have won three straight games only once, as Atlanta is fresh off back-to-back victories. However, Atlanta has posted a mediocre 5-6 record in its last 11 games at SunTrust Park, while last winning consecutive home contests on July 4 and 5.

Dallas Keuchel (3-5, 4.83 ERA) is coming off his worst start since signing with the Braves earlier this season as the southpaw was tagged for 10 hits and eight runs in less than four innings of a 9-2 loss at Miami last Thursday. Since winning back-to-back starts against Miami and San Diego in July, the Braves are 1-4 in Keuchel’s last five starts, while the 2015 AL Cy Young winner has given up three runs or more four times in this span.

The Mets send out the top left-hander in their rotation as Steven Matz (7-7, 4.49 ERA) tries to capitalize off a victory over Miami in his last outing. Matz is trying to seek consistency as the Mets have alternated wins and losses in his five starts since the All-Star break, as New York is winless in his past two road outings. Matz defeated the Braves at SunTrust Park in April, but the Mets are 0-2 in his last two starts against Atlanta, including lasting two innings in a 5-4 home defeat on June 29.

                  STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                  STREAKING

Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers (11-2, 2.77 ERA, $889):
Names like deGrom and Scherzer dominant most “best pitcher in the NL” discussions and rising stars Mike Soroka and Luis Castillo aren’t far off, Kershaw is just quietly going about his business. Heck, he may not be the best pitcher on his own team anymore.

That said, Kershaw hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in a start since the calendar said June, and has a 1.66 ERA, a 0.97 WHIP and is limiting opponents to a .180 batting average. Unsurprisingly, Kershaw and the Dodgers are -280 road favorites tonight in Miami. The Dodgers are worth a look on the runline, maybe even an alternate runline of -2.5.

                  SLUMPING

Tyler Beede, San Francisco Giants (3-6, 5.61 ERA, $575):
Beede is going through a bit of a rough patch, pitching to an 8.38 ERA and a 2.02 WHIP over his last four starts. Opponents are also getting on base at an over .400 clip while touching Beede up for a 1.112 OPS. That said, the Giants are just slight +110 home dogs for this afternoon’s Battle of the Bay against the A’s.

                  • Phillies beat up on Hamels, make Manuel's return a big hit
                    August 14, 2019
                    By The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) J.T. Realmuto hit a grand slam, Bryce Harper went deep twice and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Chicago Cubs 11-1 in Charlie Manuel's first game as hitting coach, ruining Cole Hamels' return home Wednesday night.

Manuel was back in red pinstripes in his old dugout exactly six years to the day the franchise icon managed his last game for the Phillies. He heard ''Charlie! Charlie! Charlie!'' chants after Realmuto connected to make it 10-0 in the third.

Hamels, the 2008 NLCS and World Series MVP with Manuel's Phillies, was roughed up in his first game in Philadelphia since he was traded to Texas in July 2015. Hamels (6-4) gave up eight runs and nine hits in two-plus innings.

Aaron Nola (11-3) benefited from the offense's rare outburst. He allowed three hits, including Kris Bryant's homer, and struck out seven in seven innings.

Hamels received the loudest applause during pregame introductions and got a standing ovation when he came to the plate already trailing 4-0 in the third. He wore longtime Phillies executive David Montgomery's initials on a uniform patch. Montgomery, who died in May after a five-year fight with cancer, had a close relationship with Hamels.

                    NATIONALS 17, REDS 7

WASHINGTON (AP) - Anthony Rendon, Kurt Suzuki and Adam Eaton hit homers in a 10-run fifth that included an RBI single from Stephen Strasburg (15-5), and Washington tacked on another six runs in the next inning to complete a three-game series sweep.

This marked the first time since the Nationals moved from Montreal in 2005 that every member of the team's lineup scored in a single inning. The NL wild-card leaders broke loose against Trevor Bauer (1-1) for their biggest inning of the season; they scored 11 in an inning at Colorado in 2017.

The sixth Wednesday wasn't too shabby, either, as Washington batted around again, much to the delight of a crowd of 23,596 that showed up for the unusual 4:05 p.m. weekday start.

By the time that inning was done, the club's eight position players each had scored twice and the score was 17-4. The Nationals were well on their way to improving to 65-55, pushing them 10 games above .500 for the first time since June 2018.

                    DODGERS 9, MARLINS 1

MIAMI (AP) - Clayton Kershaw struck out the first seven batters he faced and matched a season high with 10 strikeouts in seven shutout innings as Los Angeles beat Miami.

Kershaw (12-2) allowed two hits and retired the first 14 Miami batters before Harold Ramirez's two-out single to right in the fifth. The three-time Cy Young Award winner left after 90 pitches.

Rookie Edwin Rios hit his first two major league homers. Justin Turner went 3 for 5 with a home run and Corey Seager homered and had three RBIs for the Dodgers, who have outscored Miami 34-2 in the last three games.

Rios' second blast off Marlins starter Elieser Hernandez (2-5), a two-run shot that landed on the upper deck seats in right field, gave the Dodgers a 6-0 lead.

                    YANKEES 6, ORIOLES 5

NEW YORK (AP) - Gary Sanchez hit a three-run homer and New York beat Baltimore for the 16th straight time this season.

The Yankees went 17-2 against the O's, their most wins versus any opponent in a season since going 17-5 over the Kansas City Athletics in 1959.

Sanchez's 10th homer against the Orioles this year capped a four-run burst in the first inning.

Didi Gregorius hit an RBI single and Mike Ford hit a two-run single as the Yankees won their fifth straight.

Renato Nunez had five hits, including a two-run double. Jonathan Villar drove in two runs for the last-place Orioles, who lost for the ninth time in 10 games.

J.A. Happ (10-7) allowed two runs and six hits in five innings, striking out six and walking two. Aroldis Chapman converted his 33rd save in 38 chances.

Dylan Bundy (5-13) allowed six runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings.

                    RED SOX 5, INDIANS 1

CLEVELAND (AP) - Rafael Devers homered and singled, extending his hit streak to eight straight at-bats, and Xander Bogaerts connected twice to lead Boston over Cleveland.

Devers went 6 for 6 with four doubles Tuesday night. A day later, he singled in the first inning and hit a solo home run in the third before being retired on a comebacker in the fifth.

Bogaerts hit a solo drive in the third - his 100th career homer - and a three-run shot in the seventh.

Shane Bieber (12-5) allowed two runs and seven hits in six innings, losing for the second time in 10 starts since June 25.

Boston right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (1-0) working two innings for his first win since last Sept. 24.

                    ROCKIES 7, DIAMONDBACKS 6

DENVER (AP) - Nolan Arenado hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to give Colorado the victory.

After Trevor Story was hit by a pitch, Arenado launched a fastball from Archie Bradley (3-5) over the fence in left. It was Arenado's third career walk-off homer and first since June 18, 2017, against San Francisco.

Arenado was doused with Powerade soon after crossing home plate and mobbed by teammates. Colorado ended a string of five straight losses to Arizona. The Rockies are 14-33 since June 21, one of the worst marks by winning percentage in the majors over the stretch.

                    WHITE SOX 13, ASTROS 9

CHICAGO (AP) - James McCann hit a tiebreaking grand slam in the eighth inning and Chicago outlasted Houston to win the season series from the runaway AL West leaders.

Rookie Eloy Jimenez hit his 20th homer and doubled, and Tim Anderson doubled twice among four hits for the White Sox. Following a doubleheader split on Tuesday, Chicago (54-65) took two of three games from the Astros in a little over 24 hours and finished 4-3 against them this year. Houston has lost three of four following an eight-game winning streak.

McCann lined his 13th homer on an 0-2 pitch from Ryan Pressly (2-3) with two outs into the right field bullpen to end a 16-game drought. The All-Star catcher hadn't gone deep since July 22, but connected for his fourth career grand slam.

                    ATHLETICS 9, GIANTS 5

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Matt Chapman homered twice, including a pivotal drive in the ninth inning that followed a late collapse by Oakland's bullpen, and the Athletics held on to beat San Francisco.

Homer Bailey (10-8) pitched seven scoreless innings and singled twice. Robbie Grossman also went deep and made a sliding catch in left, and Matt Olson added a two-run double to help the A's earn a split of the two-game series between Bay Area rivals.

Mike Yastrzemski homered for San Francisco, which had won three straight.

Chapman homered off Tyler Beede (3-7) in the first and added another solo shot off Trevor Gott in the ninth after the Giants had trimmed a 7-0 lead to 7-5.

                    BREWERS 6, TWINS 5

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Rookie Trent Grisham hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning, and Milwaukee rallied to beat Minnesota.

The Brewers trailed 5-3 when Grisham, batting leadoff in his 11th game in the majors, blasted a 2-2 fastball from Sergio Romo (2-1) into the right-field stands. Ryan Braun reached on a throwing error by shortstop Jorge Polanco and Hernan Perez singled before Grisham went deep.

Junior Guerra (6-3) worked two scoreless innings for Milwaukee.

Mitch Garver, Eddie Rosario and Miguel Sano each hit solo homers for the Twins, who have a major league-leading 233 home runs this season. The record is 267, set last year by the Yankees.

                    PADRES 7, RAYS 2

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Cal Quantrill contributed with his arm and bat as San Diego beat Tampa Bay for the first time in over nine years.

San Diego had lost nine in a row to the Rays overall since June 23, 2010, in an interleague matchup that hasn't occurred too often. The Padres also posted their first home win over Tampa Bay - they were 0-3 against the Rays in 2004 when Petco Park opened, and had dropped the first two games of this series.

Eric Hosmer homered to help San Diego stop a three-game losing streak. Tampa Bay had won five in row, along with nine straight on the road.

Quantrill (6-3) gave up a two-run homer to Tommy Pham in the first inning, but little else before leaving with one out in the sixth. He allowed three hits and walked one, striking out six.

Rays starter Jalen Beeks (5-2) allowed five runs on eight hits in five innings.

                    TIGERS 3, MARINERS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Victor Reyes hit a two-run single in the second inning and Detroit held on to beat Seattle.

Harold Castro had three hits for Detroit while catcher Jake Rogers threw out two baserunners to end innings.

The Tigers improved to 4-6 with one game left in an 11-game homestand. Seattle has lost nine of 11.

Edwin Jackson (3-5) allowed two runs on four hits and a walk in five innings. He struck out four and allowed two homers while winning his second straight start.

Marco Gonzales (12-6) gave up three runs on 11 hits in six innings.

                    RANGERS 7, BLUE JAYS 3

TORONTO (AP) - Kolby Allard pitched 5 2/3 innings to win for the first time with Texas, Elvis Andrus had four hits and two RBIs and the Rangers beat Toronto to avoid a three-game sweep.

Nomar Mazara and Danny Santana hit solo home runs as the Rangers wrapped up a three-city trip by scoring more than five runs for the first time in that stretch of road games. The Rangers went 3-6 against Cleveland, Milwaukee, and Toronto, winning once against each opponent.

Texas came in with two hits in its previous 40 at-bats with runners in scoring position, then went 4 for 12 in such situations Wednesday.

Making his second start for the Rangers after being acquired from Atlanta last month, Allard (1-0) allowed three runs and four hits. The 22-year-old left-hander walked three and struck out five.

                        Quote of the Day
“I just think he’s got that thing the great ones have. The ability to process information very quickly, and his spatial awareness. He sees angles quicker than other people. He’s going to be a good one.”
Tony Romo, talking about Jets’ QB Sam Darnold

                        Thursday’s quiz

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

                        13) Smart move; ESPN’s new gambling-related program, Daily Wager, will have a 9am Sunday slot on ESPN2 during football season. It actually should be on closer to kickoff, but a very good move to give it Sunday exposure.

                        12) July sports betting revenue in New Jersey: $17,884,790

Year-to-date sports betting revenue in New Jersey: $127,518,555

                        11) According to Caesar’s sportsbook, Miami Dolphins are 5-2 favorites to finish with the worst record in the NFL this season. Giants/Bengals have next-lowest odds, at 9-2.

                        10) This makes no sense to me; you can go into the Army and fight in a war at age 18, but you can’t gamble in a casino until you’re 21. No bueno.

                        9) Sounds as if LT Trent Williams won’t be playing for the Redskins anytime soon, which is bad news for Washington fans and for the health of the Redskins’ QB’s.

                        8) A’s 9, Giants 5— 30-year old rookie named Corban Joseph went 1-4, knocked in a run in this game, his first in MLB this year, six years after his MLB debut.

In 2013, Joseph went 1-6 in two games for Bronx; last year, he was 4-18 in 14 games for the Orioles. This year, Joseph hit .371 at AAA Las Vegas, so he got the call this week with Oakland struggling getting offense from the keystone position.

That is what is cool about the minor leagues; guys who refuse to give up on their dreams, and once in a while, they get called (back) up to the majors and those dreams are realized.

                        7) Baseball stuff:
                        — Giants put 3B Pablo Sandoval on the IL.
                        — Mets put 2B/OF Jeff MacNeil (hamstring) on the IL.
                        — Rays put OF Avisail Garcia (oblique) on the IL.
                        — Pirates’ P Jameson Taillon had Tommy John surgery Tuesday.
                        — Arizona P Robbie Ray took himself out of Wednesday’s game after two innings.

                        6) Olive Garden is offering a limited number of customers unlimited pasta for life for $500 beginning Thursday at 2pm. At $10.99 a pop, you go more than 45 times the rest of your life, and you’re making money on the deal.

They offered the same deal two years ago and they sold out in under 90 seconds.

                        5) Odd Fact of the Day;
                        — Hunter Renfroe is an outfielder for the San Diego Padres.
                        — Hunter Renfrow is a wide receiver for the Oakland Raiders.

                        4) Tampa Bay Rays average 15,000+ fans per home game; they average 26,000+ on the road.

                        3) On August 1, a 22-year-old gambler wagered $2,000 on the Mets to win the World Series at a FanDuel sportsbook, which would pay him $200,000. Mets were 52-55 at the time, but had won six games in a row.

                        2) They had Bark at the Park at the Rockies’ game Tuesday night; there was a dog there that weighs 190 pounds. Can’t even imagine owning a dog that is so big- its owners said the dog sleeps 18 hours a day.

                        1) New York 6, Baltimore 5— Hard to believe, but the Orioles were in the playoffs three years ago; they’re 39-82 this season, and have zero hope of contending anytime soon. Pitching is a very important part of baseball, and the Orioles are sorely lacking in pitching prospects.

Mercifully, this is the last time these two teams meet this season.

                        • LEADING OFF: Indians head to NYC for a week, Arrieta's call
                          August 14, 2019
                          By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Thursday:

                          BIG APPLE TEST

Jose Ramirez, Francisco Lindor and the Indians own the majors' best record since early June, going 43-19 while whittling away an 11 1/2-game deficit in the AL Central. Now, Yasiel Puig and his new teammates are set to spend more than a week in New York, starting with a four-game series at Yankee Stadium.

Adam Plutko (4-3, 4.68 ERA) pitches the opener, taking on a big-hitting Yankees team that has the best record in the majors and has won five in a row. After taking on Gleyber Torres, Aaron Judge and the Yanks, the Indians move across town for a three-game set vs. the Mets and their talented rotation. Cleveland has never played at Citi Field - its only trip to face the Mets was in 2004 at Shea Stadium.

                          WINNING WAYS

Oakland righty Mike Fiers (11-3, 3.30 ERA) takes a nine-game winning streak into this outing at home against Houston. Fiers, who pitched a no-hitter for the Astros in 2015, has no-decisions in all three starts vs. the AL West leaders this year.

Aaron Sanchez (5-14, 5.60) starts for Houston. Leading the majors in losses when he was traded from Toronto to the Astros last month, Sanchez is trying for his third straight victory since the deal.

                          ARRIETA'S DECISION

Phillies right-hander Jake Arrieta likely will have season-ending surgery soon because of a bone spur in his pitching elbow. He's having an MRI and will determine his course of action after that.

Arrieta was put on the 10-day injured list Wednesday. He's been pitching through pain for several starts but his inability to go more than five innings led him to shut it down.

The 2015 NL Cy Young Award winner with the Cubs joined the Phils on a three-year, $75 million contract in March 2018. He is 8-8 with a 4.64 ERA this season and was 10-11 with a 3.96 ERA last year.

                          NOTHING YET

The Marlins have the worst record in the National League going into their game at home against Walker Buehler (10-2, 3.08 ERA) and the Dodgers.

Miami appears headed to its second straight last-place finish under CEO Derek Jeter, who isn't ready to say whether manager - and former Yankees teammate - Don Mattingly will return next season. Mattingly is in the final year of a four-year contract.

''To be fair to Donnie, it's something we need to talk about sooner rather than later,'' Jeter said. ''There are a lot of things that go into it. Donnie has done a good job.''

Said Mattingly: ''I'd love to be back, especially if they want me back.''

                              Thursday, Aug. 15

The St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds tangle in the Queen City at Great American Ball Park on Thursday evening, kicking off a four-game set between these National League Central Division rivals. The Reds are limping home after having their lunch handed to them in D.C. by the red-hot Washington Nationals. The Nats capped off a three-game sweep with a 17-7 whitewashing on Wednesday which resembled more of a score we'd expect from the upcoming Cincinnati Bengals-Washington Redskins preseason football game this week.

The Reds were outscored 27-14 in the three-game sete, and the over has been the rule for Cincinnati of late. The over is an impressive 8-2-1 across the past 11 outings, while going 4-1-1 in the past six at GABP. The over is also 4-0 in RHP Sonny Gray's past four outings, and 5-2 in the team's past seven against right-handed starting pitchers, while going an impressive 6-2-1 in their past nine against winning sides

For the Cardinals, it's been the complete opposite. The under is a perfect 6-0 in their past six away from home, while going 5-0 in the past five on the road vs. RHP and 5-1-1 in the past seven inside the division. The under is also 22-8-1 in their past 31 games overall. With RHP Michael Wacha on the hill, he is good for under results, too. The under is 4-0 across his past four showings, 5-1 in his past six on the road and 4-0 in his past four in Game 1 of a new series. If you're looking for some support for the over, it is 4-1-1 in the past six starts by Wacha against division foes and 6-1-1 in his past eight starts when working on nine or more days of rest.

Out west, the Houston Astros and Oakland Athletics square off in the Bay Area. Newcomer RHP Aaron Sanchez goes for the Astros, and he'll be opposed by RHP Mike Fiers, who had a no-hitter earlier this season.

Sanchez will be making his third start since being acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays at the Major League Baseball trade deadline. He has allowed just one earned run, three hits and five walks with 12 strikeouts over 11 innings in his two outings. The under hit in his first appearance for Houston, but the Astros piled up 23 runs in a massacre in Baltimore in his most recent outing. Overall the under is 8-2 in Houston's past 10 inside the AL West, and 10-3 in the past 13 against teams with a winning overall record.

For the A's, the under is 4-1-1 in the past six overall, 4-1 in the past five at home vs. RHP and 7-2 in the past nine against teams with a winning percentage over .600. As far as Fiers is concerned, the under is 9-2 across his past 11 showings, 5-2 in his past seven at home and 7-2 in his past nine against winning teams. The under is also 5-1 in his past six in Game 1 of a new series. The under has also cashed in five of the past seven meetings in this series, too.

                              Wind Report
Winds will be light and variable at most MLB venues, and not much of a factor as a result. The only venues which might be slightly affected will be Yankee Stadium, for the Indians-Yankees battle, and SunTrust Park for the Mets-Braves contest. In New York, the winds will be blowing in from right field to home plate at 7-10 mph clip, while in Atlanta the winds are blowing out from 6-9 mph to straightaway center field.

                              Friday, Aug. 16

The Orioles limp into Fenway Park to face the Red Sox, kicking off a three-game set. The over has been the rule for both of these teams lately. The over has connected in six straight on the road for the Orioles, while going 7-0-1 in their past eight inside the AL East. The over is also an impressive 9-1-1 in the past 11 vs. RHP, and 24-8-3 in the past 35 against teams with a winning overall record. For the BoSox, the over is 23-8-1 in their previous 32 games inside the division, while hitting in eight of their past 11 vs. RHP. With RHP Rick Porcello on the hill, the over has cashed in six straight at Fenway Park, and eight in a row on a grass surface. In this series, the over is 4-1-1 in the past six meetings, and 3-1-1 in Porcello's past five against the O's.

The Mets stroll into Kauffman Stadium kicking off a three-game interleague set against the lowly Royals. The Mets will be facing LHP Mike Montgomery, and the under is 5-0-1 in their past six against a left-handed starter, while going 3-0-1 in the past four on the road vs. LHP. The under is also 4-1 in their past five interleague road games, and 6-1 in the past seven interleague games overall. RHP Noah Syndergaard takes the ball, and the under is 4-1-1 in his past six away from home when facing a team with a losing overall mark, although the over is 8-2 in his past 10 when working on five days of rest. For the Royals, it's all under all the time lately. The under is 4-1 in their past five overall, 4-1 in the past five against winning teams and 5-0 in the past five vs. RHP. The under is also 25-7 in their past 32 against the Senior Circuit, while going 22-7-1 in the past 30 interleague battles at home.

In Oakland, the Astros use RHP Justin Verlander against new Athletics hurler RHP Tanner Roark, facing the Astros for the first time donning green and gold. The under is 11-3 in Verlander's past 14 starts against teams with a winning overall record, while going 3-1-1 in his past five inside the division. The under is also 4-1 in his past five overall, and 21-7-1 in his past 29 while working on four days of rest. As far as Roark is concerned, he has allowed four runs - three earned - and 10 hits across 11 2/3 innings while striking out 13 in his two starts with the A's. The under has connected in each of his outings with Oakland.

                              Wind Report
On Friday night, a hot wind will be howling at 11-14 mph from right field into the face of the batters at Globe Life Park for the Twins-Rangers battle. The Marlins-Rockies will experience 8-11 mph winds blowing in from right field, while the Mets and Royals will see winds from 6-9 mph blowing in from right field as they dodge raindrops. The rain chances are 30 percent for the interleague series opener.
