    Saturday’s Den: College football knowledge……..

Numbers/ratings in this list are from Phil Steele’s college football magazine:
    13) Top 3 quarterbacks in country:
Trevor Lawrence (Clemson), Tua Tagovailoa (Alabama), Justin Herbert (Oregon)

    12) Top three offensive lines in country:
    Oregon, Georgia, Clemson

    11) Most experienced offensive lines in country:
    Oregon, UL-Monroe, UL-Lafayette, Texas Tech

    10) Teams who lose lot of close games one year tend to improve the next year; these teams had 4 net close losses last year:

Arkansas, Nebraska, North Carolina, Western Kentucky (2 have new coaches this year)

    9) Teams who win lot of close games one year tend to regress the next year; these teams had 4 net close wins last year:

    Notre Dame, Ohio State, Texas

    8) Michigan State gained 18.3 yards per point LY, 2nd-worst in country, which means their defense/special teams provided very little help to the offense. As a result, Spartans regressed from a 10-3 record in 2017 to 7-6 LY.

Here is how Michigan State fared the last six years:
    2013-15: 36-5 W-L, +46 turnover margin
    2016-18: 20-18 W-L, -1 turnover margin

    7) Then there is Utah State, which gained only 10.46 yards/point LY, best in country, as they jumped from 6-7 to 11-2, and their coach jumped to Texas Tech for more money.

Aggies were +14 in turnovers LY, after being -2 in turnovers from 2015-17.

    6) These four teams had the best defensive yards/point in country LY:

Clemson, Fresno State, Kentucky, Mississippi State— Bulldogs have only 9 of 22 starters back this season; other three teams all have only four starters back on defense. Experienced teams tend to get the most out of what they have, then take a step back when new guys step n.

    5) These three teams had the worst defensive yards/point in country LY:
    Bowling Green, Louisville, Western Michigan

Louisville went 57-21 from 2012-17, then went 2-10 LY and fired the coach; Bowling Green also fired its coach, who was 9-27 the last three years (they were 28-14 from 2013-15).

    4) Toughest schedules in country this fall:

South Carolina, Auburn, USC, Texas A&M

    3) Since 1991, 353 teams went -10 or worse in turnovers; 67% of them improved the next year, only 23% got worse:

    -17: UTEP, UConn
    -14: East Carolina, Rutgers
    -12: Louisville, UL-Monroe

    2) Since 1991, 440 teams went +10 or better in turnovers; only 28% of them improved the next year, 64% got worse:

    +22 Georgia Southern
    +16 Kansas
    +14: UCF, Utah State
    +13: Syracuse, Ohio U.

    1) Over the last seven seasons, 53 teams were +14 or better in turnovers; 45 of those 53 teams did worse the following season.

Kansas went 3-9 with a +16 turnover ratio, which isn’t easy; they fired the coach and brought in Les Miles, so the Jayhawks will be a fascinating study for the next couple years. Miles will improve their talent base.

    • LEADING OFF: 14-loss Sanchez debuts for Astros, Hamels back
      August 2, 2019
      By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Saturday:

      NOW PITCHING

Trevor Bauer (9-8, 3.79 ERA) makes his Cincinnati debut four days after arriving in a trade with Cleveland. Bauer went 3-2 with a 4.54 ERA in six starts last month. In his last outing, he threw the ball from just past the mound over the center field fence in Kansas City after getting pulled. Bauer starts for the Reds at Atlanta. ... Marcus Stroman makes his first start for the Mets after being acquired in a trade with Toronto. Stroman is 10-5 with a 2.93 ERA against National League teams in his career. He pitches at Pittsburgh.

      CHECK HIM

The Rockies will see how outfielder David Dahl is feeling, a day after he sprained his right ankle was carted off the field in obvious pain. A first-time All-Star, Dahl was injured making an awkward catch in center at Coors Field.

The team said X-rays were negative and the severity of the injury was being assessed.

      STARTING OVER

Aaron Sanchez (3-14, 6.07 ERA) makes his debut for the Astros, three days after they got him in a trade with Toronto. The 27-year-righty leads the majors in losses - in 2016, he was an All-Star and topped the AL in ERA.

Houston has a history of improving the performance of pitchers it acquires, and Sanchez is eager to get going.

''I'm sure there's things that are on their mind and things that are on my mind. It's an open line of communication here,'' he said. ''I'm thrilled to see what they've got for me. I'm thrilled to kind of share my thoughts with them and bounce ideas off of each other and see where it goes.''

Sanchez will start for the AL West leaders at home against Seattle.

      LET'S SEE

Cubs lefty Cole Hamels (6-3, 2.98 ERA) is expected to come off the injured list and pitch against the Brewers at Wrigley Field. The 35-year-old four-time-All Star has been sidelined since suffering a left oblique strain at Cincinnati on June 28.

Milwaukee starter Gio Gonzalez (2-1, 3.48 ERA) exited his previous game because of tightness in his left shoulder.

      ROCKY RELIEF

Right-hander Scott Oberg has been moved into the closer role for the Rockies, replacing the slumping Wade Davis. Oberg has excelled as the team's setup man, going 5-1 with a 1.59 ERA in 44 games this season.

Oberg started off well - he got Mike Yastrzemski to ground into a game-ending double play with two on Friday night, preserving a 5-4 win over the Giants for his fourth save.

Davis is coming off a tough outing in which he allowed five runs, including two homers, in a loss to the Dodgers on Wednesday. But he has struggled all season, in particular at Coors Field.

In 21 games at Colorado's home park, Davis is 0-5 with an 11.29 ERA and 11 walks and 18 strikeouts in 18 1/3 innings. On the road, Davis is 1-0 with a 0.68 ERA in 15 games and nine walks and 15 strikeouts in 13 1/3 innings.

''It's a little bit perplexing,'' manager Bud Black said. ''It just might be one of those years, but I think the thing that stands out for me is the walk totals both home and road are a little high.''

Black says Davis is expected to see duty in the middle innings going forward.

      AVAILABLE

Two-time All-Star catcher Jonathan Lucroy has been designated for assignment by the Angels. They made the move two days after he returned from a concussion and broken nose in a home plate collision last month. The 33-year-old Lucroy batted .242 with seven homers and 30 RBIs in 74 games this season. ... The Pirates have cut infielder Jung Ho Kang. The 32-year-old was designated for assignment after hitting .169 with 10 home runs and 24 RBIs in 65 games this season.

        • Weekend Watch

          Saturday, Aug. 3

On Friday, Minnesota (-230) outlasted Kansas City in the opener with a 11-9 victory as a heavy home favorite. The 'over' (11) cashed in the top of the sixth inning. The Twins have watched the high side cash in three straight and four of their last five games. Also, the 'over' is on a 5-0 run from Minnesota. The setback for the Royals was their fourth straight. Pitching continues to be a problem for KC, who has allowed 54 runs in its last seven games and that's helped the 'over' go 6-1.

The two teams will continue their series at Target Field in the Twin Cities on Saturday with LHP Danny Duffy and RHP Kyle Gibson battling in Game 2. Duffy has been simply so-so this season, going 5-5 with a 4.42 ERA and .334 opponent on-base percentage while posting 85 strikeouts across 95 2/3 innings in his 17 outings. Duffy allowed three earned runs, six hits and two walks with four strikeouts across eight innings in his most recent outing against the Twins at Kauffman Stadium back on June 22. He did serve up three solo homers in that outing, however.

The Twins counter with Gibson, who has posted 10 victories across his 14 decisions while whiffing 118 batters in 116 1/3 innings over his 21 starts and one relief appearance. He twirled eight scoreless innings with just two hits allowed and no walks with six strikeouts in a 2-0 victory back on June 14 at Target Field against the Royals, and Kansas City has posted a .213 opponent batting average in 12 2/3 innings over two starts by Gibson. He has posted a 6-1 record at home, too, with a collective .222 opponent batting average with only five homers allowed in 58 1/3 innings.

The Cardinals and Athletics begin a two-game interleague series on Saturday after both clubs got a rare Friday off. Both of these clubs have been playing great baseball since the All-Star break with St. Louis going 14-6 while Oakland has produced a 12-7 mark. Those efforts have put the Cardinals into first place of the National League Central while the A's are now in the thick of the American League wild-card chase.

For the opener, bettors will see the Cardinals RHP Dakota Hudson squaring off against the A's RHP Mike Fiers. The latter knows the Cardinals well from his days with the Cincinnati Reds, and Bailey probably wishes he could face anyone else. The righty is 0-4 with a 7.11 ERA with six homers and 14 walks allowed in 31 2/3 innings with a .321 opponent batting average against the Cards. Hudson has surprisingly been one of the most consistent hurlers for the Cards, posting 10 victories in 15 decisions while posting 86 strikeouts over 113 2/3 innings in 21 starts and one relief apperance. He doesn't have overwhelming stuff, and he is fairly hittable with a 1.54 WHIP and .276 opponent batting average. Hudson has served up 10 homers across 57 2/3 innings on the road, too.

St. Louis has gone 7-9 versus the AL this season in interleague matchups and that includes a 3-3 away record. Meanwhile, Oakland is 7-4 and that includes a 4-2 mark at home. These teams met at the end of June and Oakland swept a two-game series from the Cardinals, capturing 7-3 and 2-0 wins.

          Sunday, Aug. 4

Many talking heads expected the Mets to deal RHP Noah Syndergaard at the July 31 trade deadline, but he remains in blue and orange. He'll work in the Steel City against the Pittsburgh Pirates, who have yet to announce a starter. As far as Thor is concerned, he has actually been slightly more effective on the road this season, going 2-2 with a 3.78 ERA with just five homers allowed across 64 1/3 innings across 10 starts. He also enjoys pitching during the daytime, posting a 2.70 ERA with a sparkling .187 opponent batting average across 40 innings in six starts, including his only complete game. He hasn't faced the Pirates yet this season, Syndergaard is 1-0 with a 1.88 ERA with a .218 opponent batting average in two outings against the Bucs since the start of the 2016 campaign.
Giants RHP Tyler Beede will tangle with LHP Kyle Freeland in the series finale on Sunday afternoon in Denver. Freeland has been a nightmare this season, going 2-9 with a 7.48 ERA and 1.64 WHIP across 16 starts, which is poor, even by Coors Field standards. He has also posted a .295 opponent batting average with 20 homers and 32 walks allowed across just 77 innings. At Coors, he is even worse, going 1-4 with a 10.31 ERA and .346 OBA with 12 bombs served up in just 36 2/3 innings. The Giants tagged him for three earned runs across five innings in a no-decision on May 9 in a 12-11 victory, and three earned runs and nine hits allowed in five innings in a loss on April 13.

As far as Beede is concerned, he is 3-5 with a 5.01 ERA while turning in a 1.54 WHIP and .270 opponent batting average in 18 starts and three relief appearances, while posting a 5.73 ERA with eight homers across 44 innings on the road. He faced the Rockies in that 12-11 game on May 9, allowing two earned runs, three hits and three walks in two innings of relief. Across his past two outings, he has allowed four earned runs and 10 hits in each of his past two starts, going 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA.

The Red Sox and Yankees face each other on Sunday Night Baseball with LHP David Price and LHP JA Happ tangling in the Bronx. Boston has actually lost each of Price's past four outings, and he is 0-2 with a 6.52 ERA across 19 1/3 innings. He has faced the Yankees just once this season, allowing two earned runs, six hits and a walk with six strikeouts in a 99-pitch effort over 6 1/3 innings in a victory in the Bronx back on June 2.

For Happ, he is two games over .500 at 8-6, but he has a mediore 1.34 WHIP and a subpar 5.19 ERA through 21 starts this season with the opponent hitting .276 against him. He is 3-0 with a 4.62 ERA in nine outings on the road with a .238 opponent batting average, but home is where the problems have been. He is 5-6 with a 5.64 ERA and .305 opponent batting average in 60 2/3 innings across 12 outings. Happ has fared well against the Red Sox, however, going 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA in two outings over 11 1/3 innings, with the BoSox hitting just .220 against him.

                          STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                          STREAKING

Marcus Stroman, New York Mets (6-11, 2.96 ERA, $-620):
Stroman was having a career year for the Blue Jays before getting traded to the Mets and that was the American League East. And now, the fiery right-hander should excel in the National League, starting tonight in Pittsburgh against the Pirates, where he the Mets are -120 faves with a total of 9.

Stroman did nothing but up his value heading towards the deadline. Stroman pitched to a 1.80 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP over his last three starts. With the Pirates countering with the every-struggling Chris Archer, we like the value with the Mets tonight.

                          SLUMPING

Dylan Bundy, Baltimore Orioles (5-11, 5.24 ERA, $-403):
Another week, and another “Slumping” tag for Bundy. The Orioles right-hander has a 9.75 ERA and a 2.00 WHIP while allowing opponents to get on base at a .420 clip. Luckily for Bundy, he faces the Blue Jays. Bundy has allowed three earned runs on 10 hits in 13.1 innings in his last two starts against Toronto.

                          3 STRIKES

                          BOYD’S BALLS OF FIRE

There is no prop bet in baseball we love more right now that Matt Boyd’s strikeout total. The lefty is punching out batters left and right this season. In fact, Boyd is fourth in the Bigs in strikeouts behind Chris Sale, Gerrit Cole and Max Scherzer. That’s a pretty impressive list. Tonight, his strikeout total against the Rangers is set at 7.5. Boyd has averaged 10 strikeouts a start of his last six starts and hasn’t had fewer than eight over that span and has had eight or more in nine of his last 11.

On top of all of that, he faces a Rangers team that strikes out the second most in baseball. In Boyd’s only other start against the Rangers this season he struck out 11 batters in seven innings. So, yeah. Take the Over.

                          A HEALTHY HAMELS

The Cubs rotation gets a much needed boosts this afternoon as Cole Hamels makes his first start since June 28th after straining his oblique. Hamels was the Cubs best starter before the injury, pitching to a 2.98 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP in 17 starts. The veteran lefty was even better at Wrigley Field, where the Cubs host the Brewers today. Hamels numbers drop to 2.58 and 1.11 at the “Friendly Confines” this season. With the Cubs post-All Star break hitting woes, consider the Under 9.

                          BOTTOM OF THE BARGIN BIN

Chris Sale’s struggles for the Red Sox have been well documented this season. His current 4.26 ERA would be the worst of his career by almost a whole run. And to make matters worse, his team’s biggest rival, the Yankees, have owned him this season. In three starts against the Bronx Bombers Sale has been lit up for a 7.71 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP.

With Domingo German also struggling for the Yankees right now and having a 6.00 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP in two starts against the Red Sox this season, plus, the Over going 7-1 in the last eight meetings between these hated rivals, we would consider the Over 9.5 in Game 1 of their doubleheader.

                          • Sanchez helps Astros no-hit Mariners 9-0
                            August 4, 2019
                            By The Associated Press

HOUSTON (AP) Aaron Sanchez looked like a reinvented pitcher in his Houston debut, throwing six stellar innings to start the Astros on a combined no-hitter Saturday night in their 9-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

Sanchez was an All-Star in 2016 and led the American League in ERA, but he's struggled badly this season and had lost 13 straight decisions to lead the majors with 14 losses. Three days after he was acquired from Toronto at the trade deadline, the 27-year-old right-hander teamed with Will Harris, Joe Biagini and Chris Devenski to shut down Seattle.

It was the second time in less than a month the last-place Mariners were no-hit by multiple pitchers. The Los Angeles Angels used two pitchers in a combined no-hitter July 12 against Seattle on a night when they honored late left-hander Tyler Skaggs by all wearing his No. 45 in their first home game since his death.

Sanchez (4-14) struck out six, walked two and hit a batter in his first victory since April 27 for Toronto.

Seattle's Marco Gonzales (12-9) allowed four runs in five innings.

                            TWINS 11, ROYALS 3

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Nelson Cruz hit three home runs in a game for the second time in 10 days, powering AL Central-leading Minnesota to the victory.

A day after he homered, doubled twice and drove in five runs, Cruz again had five RBIs.

Cruz hit a two-run homer in the first inning, a solo drive in the second and a two-run homer in the sixth. He didn't get a chance at a record-tying fourth home run - he was left on deck when Jorge Polanco grounded out to end the eighth.

Polanco and C.J. Cron and Jorge Polanco also homered for the Twins, who lead Cleveland by three games.

Jorge Soler homered for the Royals, who have dropped five consecutive games. Danny Duffy (5-6) got the loss.

Minnesota's Kyle Gibson (11-4) allowed two earned runs in 6 2/3 innings.

                            YANKEES 9, RED SOX 2, GAME 1

                            YANKEES 6, RED SOX 4, GAME 2

NEW YORK (AP) - DJ LeMahieu hit a pair of home runs off Chris Sale in the opener of New York's doubleheader sweep, and Mike Tauchman had a tiebreaking two-run single in the seventh inning of the nightcap.

The AL East-leading Yankees, however, saw two more players get hurt. Slugger Edwin Encarnacion broke his right wrist when hit by a pitch from Josh Smith in the eighth inning of the opener, and outfielder Aaron Hicks hurt his elbow on a throw in the second game. There was no immediate word on how long they would be sidelined.

Boston's losing streak reached seven, its longest since 2015. Boston is 59-54, with as many losses as its World Series champions last year (108-54).

Domingo German (14-2) and Tommy Kahnle (3-0) got the wins for New York. Aroldis Chapman earned his 29th save in 34 chances in the second game.

Boston's Rafael Devers hit his career-high 22nd homer in the nightcap. Sale (5-11) tied his career high by allowing eight earned runs in 3 2/3 innings in the opener, and Matt Barnes (3-4) surrendered Tauchman's hit in the night game.

                            DODGERS 4, PADRES 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Walker Buehler struck out 15 in his second career complete game, leading the Dodgers to the victory.

Buehler (10-2) reached double digits in strikeouts for the fourth time this season, all since June 3. The 15 strikeouts were his most since he had 16 in a complete-game victory over Colorado on June 21.

Justin Turner hit his 17th homer as Los Angeles finished off San Diego in a tidy 2 hours, 18 minutes. Turner finished with two hits and two RBIs.

San Diego's Manuel Margot connected for his first career pinch-hit homer with two outs in the eighth inning. Cal Quantrill (4-3) gave up four runs and six hits over five innings.

                            BRAVES 5, REDS 4, 10 INNINGS

ATLANTA (AP) - Atlanta star Ronald Acuna Jr. hit an RBI single off Robert Stephenson with two outs in the 10th inning.

The Braves thought they had the game just about won in the eighth when Acuna drew a tiebreaking bases-loaded walk from Michael Lorenzen. But then Shane Greene, the new closer making his Braves debut after being acquired in a trade with Detroit, blew a save opportunity in the ninth.

Greene gave up consecutive singles to begin the inning before Tucker Barnhart's flair single to left field scored the tying run.

Luke Jackson (6-2), who lost the closer's job to Greene after the trade, earned the win after striking out the side in the 10th.

Trevor Bauer allowed three runs in 4 2/3 innings in his first start with Cincinnati after he was acquired in a trade with Cleveland. Jared Hughes (3-4) got the loss.

                            METS 7, PIRATES 5

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Wilson Ramos hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning, sending New York to the win after Marcus Stroman had a shaky debut with the Mets.

Stroman, acquired in a trade with Toronto last Sunday, allowed three runs in 4 1/3 innings, but received a no-decision after the Mets pounced on Pittsburgh's bullpen.

New York trailed 3-1 in the seventh when Jeff McNeil connected for a pinch-hit homer to get the Mets within a run. Robinson Cano doubled off Kyle Crick (3-6) leading off the eighth and Ramos followed with a shot to the seats in right-center field.

Ramos finished with a career-high six RBIs for New York, which won for the ninth time in 11 games. Justin Wilson (3-1) earned the victory.

Bryan Reynolds had four hits for Pittsburgh.

                            CUBS 4, BREWERS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Cole Hamels pitched five shutout innings for the Cubs after spending five weeks on the injured list, and Albert Almora Jr. connected for a tiebreaking homer.

Chicago lost All-Star catcher Willson Contreras to a right hamstring injury in the seventh. He'll undergo an MRI on Monday.

Out since June 28 because of a strained left oblique, Hamels allowed four singles, struck out six and walked none.

Almora hit a solo drive in the seventh off Junior Guerra (3-3). Rowan Wick (1-0) got his first major league victory, and Craig Kimbrel earned his ninth save.

Ryan Braun singled in the lone run for the Brewers, who have dropped five of six.

                            RAYS 8, MARLINS 6

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Eric Sogard homered twice and finished with a career-high five RBIs, powering Tampa Bay to the victory.

Willy Adames and Austin Meadows also connected as Tampa Bay won for the seventh time in eight games. Nick Anderson (3-4), who was acquired in a trade with Miami on Wednesday, pitched a perfect eighth for the win, and Emilio Pagan finished for his ninth save.

The Rays went ahead to stay on Adames' leadoff drive against Jarlin Garcia (2-1) in the eighth.

Sogard, picked up in a trade with Toronto on Sunday, hit a two-run shot in the second and a three-run drive off Elieser Hernandez in the third.

Starlin Castro homered for Miami, which has dropped three of four.

                            INDIANS 7, ANGELS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Francisco Lindor and Jason Kipnis homered during Cleveland's five-run fifth inning.

Carlos Santana added a solo shot in the eighth, helping Cleveland to its third win in four games. Adam Plutko (4-2) allowed one run in 5 1/3 innings.

Kipnis hit a two-run homer off Trevor Cahill (3-7), who replaced injured starter Felix Pena in the second. Lindor's three-run drive was off Justin Anderson.

Pena sprained his right knee as he stepped on first base to record an out on a ground ball hit by Jose Ramirez.

Los Angeles has dropped seven of nine to fall to .500 at 56-56.

                            RANGERS 5, TIGERS 4, 10 INNINGS

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Rougned Odor homered with two outs in the 10th inning, lifting Texas to the victory.

Odor's opposite-field drive into the Detroit bullpen in left-center came against Nick Ramirez (5-4). That was a pitch after third base umpire Dave Rackley ruled Odor was able to check his swing on 2-2 pitch.

Jose Leclerc (2-3) pitched a perfect 10th inning for the win.

Miguel Cabrera homered for Detroit. Matthew Boyd struck out nine while pitching 5 2/3 innings of two-run ball.

                            ORIOLES 6, BLUE JAYS 4

BALTIMORE (AP) - Trey Mancini homered and drove in four runs, and Baltimore stopped Toronto's five-game win streak.

After Toronto pulled even with two runs in the top of the seventh, Baltimore restored its lead in the bottom half. The first two batters reached against Buddy Boshers (0-1) before Hanser Alberto hit an RBI single off Justin Shafer and Mancini added a run-scoring groundout.

Mychal Givens (2-5) worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings and Paul Fry got three outs for his third save.

Freddy Galvis and Reese McGuire homered for the Blue Jays and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had three hits and an RBI.

                            PHILLIES 3, WHITE SOX 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Aaron Nola pitched seven strong innings for Philadelphia, and Bryce Harper and Rhys Hoskins homered.

Nola (10-2) allowed one run and three hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks. He lowered his ERA to 1.91 over his last eight starts.

Nick Pivetta got the final six outs for his first career save.

Jon Jay had an RBI double for Chicago, which has dropped nine of 11. The White Sox are batting .194 while averaging two runs per game over that stretch.

White Sox left-hander Ross Detwiler (1-2) allowed two runs and three hits in 5 2/3 innings.

                            GIANTS 6, ROCKIES 5

DENVER (AP) - Pinch-hitter Buster Posey came through with a two-run double in the eighth inning to rally San Francisco to the road win.

Scooter Gennett homered for the Giants, and Pablo Sandoval had three hits.

Posey batted with two on against Carlos Estevez (1-2) and lined a ball to right field to score pinch-runner Kevin Pillar and Austin Slater. Will Smith got three outs for his 27th save.

Sam Coonrod (2-0) worked the seventh for the win.

Trevor Story and Charlie Blackmon homered for the Rockies.

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

                                13) White Sox 4, Phillies 3 (15)— This unique game Friday night saw Phillies P Vince Velasquez make a great catch as a left fielder, also throw out a runner at home and damn near throw out a second runner at the plate, all while OF Roman Quinn was pitching for the Phillies.

484 pitches in all, 36 thrown by an outfielder; Phillies starter Zach Eflin also threw 28 pitches in relief in a game that took 5:28 to play. White Sox used nine pitchers in a game with no DH and somehow none of them were starters or outfielders.

                                12) To make the playoffs in baseball, especially if you’re not a real wealthy team, you need to get contributions from 30-35 players over the course of a 6-month season.

I’m thinking back to the 2012 Oakland A’s, who were 37-42 on July 1st, but went on a run from that point on (57-26) and finished 94-68, winning the AL West. A fun year.

                                — Brandon Hicks played in only 22 games that year, but hit two walk-off homers.
                                — Brandon Moss played in only 84 games, but hit 21 homers.
                                — AJ Griffin made only 15 starts, but was 7-1 with a 1.13 WHIP in those games.
                                — Evan Scribner pitched only 35 innings, but had two wins and a save.

With no trading allowed after July 31, teams’ organizational depth will get a serious test, since the only improvement to the roster will come from within the organization.

                                11) My opinion on having no trading is August is that it is bad for the sport; baseball needs to stay in the news to compete with the NFL for attention. Speculation can be annoying, but when people are talking about baseball, it is good for the sport as a whole.

If you must have only one trade deadline during the season, I’d prefer August 31 to July 31.

                                10) They’re going to call a lot of holding penalties in NFL exhibition games, to emphasize whatever rules changes they put in; once the regular games start (and the starters play) the penalty flags will get put away the way they always do.

But it is something to remember if you’re betting on these (meaningless) preseason games.

                                9) San Diego Padres’ lefty P Eric Lauer is 1-0, 2.65 in three starts against the Dodgers this season; he is 5-8, 4.77 in 17 starts vs everyone else. Makes no sense.

                                8) Will Smith hit a grand slam to beat the Padres Thursday night; when he hit the ball, the relief pitcher on the mound jumped up in the air, happy that Smith had hit an inning-ending fly ball, but he forgot the ball is juiced— it landed over the centerfield fence.

                                7) Baseball stuff:
                                — Twins put P Michael Pineda, OF Byron Buxton on the IL.
                                — Cardinals put OF Tyler O’Neill (wrist) on the IL.

                                6) Actors in Blue Chips who are still active in basketball, 25 years after the movie came out:
                                — Penny Hardaway, coach at Memphis
                                — Rick Pitino, coached pro ball in Greece last year
                                — Jim Boeheim still coaches Syracuse.
                                — Allan Houston works for the Knicks.
                                — Matt Painter, coach at Purdue
                                — Bobby Hurley, coach at Arizona State

                                5) 23-year-old Nathan Patterson signed a minor-league contract with the A’s after hit 96 on the radar gun twice and also hit 95 at a speed pitch challenge at a Colorado Rockies’ game- he had also done it at a minor league game in Nashville.

Reminds me of the movie The Rookie, the true story of a 35-year old Biology teacher who throws 98 at a tryout and gets signed by Tampa Bay.- lefty Jim Morris pitched for a little while in the majors for the then-Devil Rays.

                                4) New York 4, Boston 2— This Friday night game was only 2nd MLB game in last 25 years in which there were 6+ runs scored in the first inning, then no runs scored the rest of the game. It also happened on April 29, 2017 (Indians over Mariners, 4-3).

                                3) John Smoltz is pushing for the Wild Card thing to be best-of-3, instead of a one-game deal. His point is that teams aren’t going all-out at the trading deadline because they don’t want to mortgage their future, just to get into a one-game playoff.

                                2) Falcons’ backup QB Kurt Benkert played well in the Hall of Fame Game, but he suffered what was described as a major toe injury, so Atlanta is bringing in Matt Simms to play behind Matt Schaub and Matt Ryan. Three QB’s, three Matts.

                                1) NBA scheduled their opening night on same night as Game 1 of the World Series? Could have Dodgers playing the World Series at home, while Lakers-Clippers would be opening their season four miles away.
