      • Boone dubs Yanks 'savages' during rant in 6-2 win over Rays
        July 18, 2019
        By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Yankees manager Aaron Boone got fired up at a rookie umpire in a profane rant, and New York awoke from a sleepy start to rally past the Tampa Bay Rays 6-2 in a doubleheader opener Thursday.

New York rallied to win the second game 5-1 and reopen an eight-game AL East lead over the second-place Rays. Luke Voit tied the score in the fifth with his first home run since June 14, and catcher Mike Zunino caused Charlie Morton to balk home the tiebreaking run in a four-run sixth that included Didi Gregorius' two-run single. The Yankees won three straight after wasting a ninth-inning lead in the series opener and improved to 34-11 against the AL East, including 12-5 against Tampa Bay.

After Domingo German (12-2) gave up solo homers to his first two batters in the first game, Gio Urshela hit a tying home run in the second off Yonny Chirinos (9-5), and Gary Sanchez smashed a go-ahead 110 mph single off the glove of third baseman Yandy Diaz during a three-run fifth. Diaz had helped the Yankees come alive when he dropped Didi Gregorius' leadoff popup in the second for a two-base error.

Boone fumed after rookie umpire Brennan Miller called Brett Gardner out on strikes in the second inning. Miller, umpiring behind the plate for the fifth time in the major leagues, had punched out Aaron Judge in the first. Gardner batted in the second after Urshela's tying, two-run homer and struck out on a 1-2 pitch.

Gardner returned to the dugout, slammed his bat into the bat rack nine times, then eight times into the dugout roof. Microphones caught Boone yelling that the pitch was outside to Miller, a Triple-A International League crew chief who made his big league debut April 20 as a call-up umpire.

Miller said, ''I heard you, Aaron,'' and when Boone persisted, the umpire ejected him. Boone ran out and kept up the argument, getting close to Miller's face and clapping his hands for emphasis. He repeatedly called his players ''savages'' in the batter's box and told Miller to ''tighten it up right now, OK?''

        PHILLIES 7, DODGERS 6

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Bryce Harper tied it in his Phillie Phanatic headband with an RBI single and Rhys Hoskins ripped a two-RBI single in the seventh inning to rally Philadelphia over Los Angeles.

Hoskins ripped one to right off Joe Kelly to cap a four-run seventh for the Phillies and a 7-5 lead.

Phillies closer Hector Neris, pitching while appealing a three-game suspension, gave up a solo homer to Alex Verdugo in the ninth to make it 7-6. But he got the final out for his 18th save. He upset the Dodgers by yelling into their dugout after getting the final out.

Ranger Suarez (2-0) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief to help the Phillies split the four-game series with the Dodgers. Dylan Floro (4-3) took the loss in relief.

        INDIANS 6, TIGERS 3

CLEVELAND (AP) - Trevor Bauer struck out 10 in 6 2/3 innings, Jose Ramirez hit a go-ahead home run in the sixth and Cleveland beat Detroit for the 11th straight time.

Cleveland swept the four-game series and moved to 12-1 against Detroit this season. The Indians have won five straight and 11 of 13 overall.

Bauer (9-7) has been the subject of trade rumors as the July 31 deadline approaches. Several scouts were seated behind home plate to watch Bauer, who could be one of the big names dealt by end of the month.

Brad Hand recorded the final four outs - all on strikeouts - for his 26th save in 27 chances. Tigers starter Matthew Boyd (6-8), another trade candidate, gave up the home run to Ramirez that broke a 3-all tie.

RED SOX 5, BLUE JAYS 0

BOSTON (AP) - Chris Sale and two relievers combined on a two-hitter, and the Boston left-hander struck out 12 in six innings for his first regular season win at Fenway Park in more than a year.

Sale (4-9) gave up both hits and walked two to earn his first victory anywhere in a month and his first at home since July 11, 2018 - a span of 14 starts. It was his 11th game this season with 10 or more strikeouts.

Rafael Devers hit a three-run homer off Thomas Pannone (2-4), who matched Sale into the fifth inning before giving up Sam Travis' double and Sandy Leon's RBI single. After Mookie Betts walked, Devers hit the first pitch out to right-center to make it 4-0 and chase Pannone.

        CARDINALS 7 REDS 4

CINCINNATI (AP) - Tommy Edman snapped a sixth-inning tie with his first career grand slam, Paul DeJong hit a two-run homer and St. Louis beat Cincinnati for its fifth win in six games.

The slam came one pitch after the Reds just missed what would have been an inning-ending double play. Reliever Robert Stephenson (2-2) retired pinch-hitter Yairo Munoz on a bases-loaded fly to right fielder Yasiel Puig, and Puig's throw home kept Matt Wieters at third. Catcher Juan Graterol's throw to first almost caught Kolten Wong off the bag, but Wong got his hand to the base a split-second before Joey Votto's tag.

Eugenio Suarez hit a solo home run in the first inning and added a sacrifice fly in Cincinnati's two-run third as the Reds built a 3-0 lead.

Edman's blow gave Dakota Hudson the win. Hudson (9-4) gave up six hits and three runs with two walks and three strikeouts in five innings. He's 7-1 over his last 11 starts. Hudson also hit a batter.

        NATIONALS 13, BRAVES 4

ATLANTA (AP) - Stephen Strasburg had a three-run homer among his three hits and set a franchise-record for a pitcher with five RBIs to help surging Washington beat Atlanta.

The Nationals, who have won 14 of their last 18 games, cut Atlanta's lead to 5 1/2 games in the NL East by winning the opener of a four-game series.

Strasburg (12-4) improved to 3-0 against Atlanta this season by winning his fifth straight start. He lasted only 5 1/3 innings, allowing eight hits and three runs. His effort on the mound was overshadowed by his career highs in hits and RBIs.

After the Nationals knocked rookie right-hander Kyle Wright (0-3) out of the game in the third, Strasburg hit Touki Toussaint's second pitch 420 feet over the Washington bullpen behind the left-field wall for a three-run homer and an 8-1 lead.

        TWINS 6, ATHLETICS 3

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Pinch-hitter Eddie Rosario drove a go-ahead, three-run homer on the first pitch from reliever Yusmeiro Petit (2-2) in the seventh inning and Minnesota beat Oakland.

Rosario produced the first pinch-hit homer of the year for the Twins and helped snap their season-high three-game losing streak. Mitch Garver and C.J. Cron each went deep in the eighth to pad the lead, and Taylor Rogers held the A's down for two innings to record his 14th save in 17 tries.

Despite seven strong innings by starter Kyle Gibson (9-4), the Twins trailed 3-1 entering the seventh against Mike Fiers.

        ASTROS 6, ANGELS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - George Springer and Alex Bregman homered, Wade Miley (8-4) pitched two-run ball into the sixth inning and Houston beat Los Angeles.

Springer drove four home runs during the four-game series, tying Craig Biggio for the most when batting leadoff in a series in franchise history. Biggio had his four connections during a three-game set against the Cubs in 1998.

The Angels didn't get much of a lift from the return of Mike Trout, who missed three games with a strained right calf. Trout was the designated hitter and went 1 for 4.

Springer's solo shot to right-center off Matt Harvey (3-5) in the third inning was his 22nd of the season, matching his total from last year. Bregman's homer to lead off the sixth gave Houston a 6-0 lead.

        BREWERS 5, DIAMONDBACKS 1

PHOENIX (AP) - Orlando Arcia hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning to decide a duel between Milwaukee's Zach Davies (8-2) and Arizona's Merrill Kelly.

Arizona hitters only struck out once, when Matt Albers got Nick Ahmed looking for the game's final out. It's the first time a major league team has had one strikeout in a game since April and came a night after the Diamondbacks tied a franchise record for a nine-inning game with 19 runs against the Texas Rangers.

Davies got a lift with Lorenzo Cain robbed Eduardo Escobar of a home run in the first inning. He pitched one-run ball over seven innings, same as Kelly.

The Brewers scored three runs off Yoan Lopez (1-3) in the eighth.

        MARLINS 4, PADRES 3

MIAMI (AP) - Brian Anderson doubled home the winning run with one out in the ninth inning and Miami earned its first walkoff victory of the year.

The score was 3-all when Garrett Cooper singled in the ninth against Trey Wingenter (1-3). Pinch runner Yadiel Rivera stole second and scored without a play on Anderson's hit into the left field corner.

The Marlins were 1 for 13 with runners in scoring position before Anderson came through. Five Marlins pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts. Sergio Romo (2-0) had two strikeouts in a perfect ninth.

Fernando Tatis Jr. hit his 15th home run for the Padres. Miami's Harold Ramirez hit his fourth homer.

        ROYALS 6, WHITE SOX 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Cheslor Cuthbert and Jorge Soler homered in a five-run third inning, and Kansas City stayed hot by completing a four-game sweep of Chicago.

Ian Kennedy gave up a run in the ninth but struck out A.J. Reed looking with the tying run on second base to clinch the win and earn his 16th save in 19 opportunities. Brad Keller (6-9) recovered from a rocky start to get the win.

The White Sox have lost seven in a row since coming back from the All-Star break and drop a season-worst nine games under .500. Yoan Moncada matched his career high, set last year, with his 17th home run in the top of the third to make it 3-0 before the Royals scored. Ross Detwiler (1-1) took the loss.

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here…….

            13) Extreme heat is forecast for the Albany/Saratoga area Saturday; NYRA has cancelled racing for Saturday at Saratoga, which is a wise but expensive decision to make.

            12) Can you be considered one of the all-time great quarterbacks if you never won a Super Bowl? Dan Marino never won a Super Bowl, Dan Fouts never played in one, but their greatness was obvious. Its an interesting debate when you weigh who the all-time greats were.

            11) I still think John Elway is the best QB ever; who do you think is the best ever?

            10) Mookie Betts is the first Boston Red Sox player since Ted Williams in 1946 to score a run in 13 consecutive games.

            9) Cincinnati Reds have homered 28 times in first inning this year, the most in MLB.

            8) It still boggles my mind that the Cleveland Browns are favored to win the AFC North when they’ve been favored in only four of their 48 games the last three years.

            7) Baseball stuff:
            — Marlins put SS JT Riddle (forearm) on IL.
            — Reds put C Curt Casali (knee), P David Rodriguez (shoulder) on the IL.
            — Braves activated OF Ender Inciarte from the IL.
            — Angels put C Jonathan Lucroy (broken nose) on IL.

            6) Oddsmaking legend Jimmy Vaccaro is returning to Las Vegas to work at the SouthPoint Casino; he had been working at Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh.

            5) Our prayers go out to UNLV offensive coordinator Barney Cotton, who needs a heart transplant and is stepping aside from his job with the Rebels.

            4) Nationals 13, Braves 4— Stephen Strasburg had three hits, five RBI and allowed three runs in 5.1 IP as Washington closed within 5.5 games of Atlanta in the NL East.

            3) Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard have been teammates for five years; they’ve started consecutive games 58 times.

Only nine of those 58 times did both deGrom/Syndergaard get wins.

            2) In a fitting bit of symmetry, five guys were arrested Thursday for fighting at a Five Guys restaurant in Stuart, FL. Two adults, three juveniles were taken into custody; no report if they got their burgers to go or not.

            1) My all-time basketball starting five: Kareem, Jordan, Bill Russell, Lebron and Magic.

            • LEADING OFF: 'Savage' Yanks host Rockies, deadline watch
              July 19, 2019
              By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Friday:

              THAT'S SAVAGE

The Yankees open a three-game home series against Colorado with a new rallying cry inspired by manager Aaron Boone's profane rant during a doubleheader sweep of the Rays on Thursday. Boone repeatedly called his hitters ''savages'' in the batter's box while chewing out rookie plate umpire Brennan Miller during the second inning of the opener. Television microphones picked up the audio, which went viral and was being printed on t-shirts before the first game ended. Asked about the unusual expression, Boone said ''Sometimes in the heat of the battle, you just kind of utter some things.''

              STARTER SHOWCASE

Evaluators figure to be tuned into starts by Toronto's Marcus Stroman and Texas' Mike Minor with the July 31 trade deadline approaching. The 28-year-old Stroman (5-10, 3.25) is set to face Detroit knowing he's likely auditioning for a number of contenders. Minor's Rangers opened the second half as wild-card hopefuls, but they have lost four straight, including a 19-4 drubbing by Arizona on Wednesday. Minor has said he doesn't want to be traded, but general manager Jon Daniels said last week the team was ''not going to rule anything out.''

              BIG RELIEF

Nathan Eovaldi is expected to rejoin the Red Sox for a series in Baltimore and work out of the bullpen after completing a rehab appearance Thursday with Triple-A Pawtucket. Eovaldi began the year in Boston's rotation but had elbow surgery in April. In need of relief help, the Red Sox plan to use the hard-throwing right-hander out of the `pen. He may not be activated from the 60-day injured list until Saturday, since he just pitched Thursday. Eovaldi's performance could dictate how aggressive Boston is at the trade deadline.

              ROYAL RETURN

Mike Montgomery (1-2, 5.67) will make his first big league appearance with Kansas City a decade after he emerged as a top prospect in the Royals system. Montgomery was traded to Tampa Bay in a package that brought back Wade Davis and James Shields in 2012 and eventually ended up with the Cubs, who he helped win a World Series in 2016. Chicago traded him to the Royals this week for catcher Martin Maldonado, and the left-hander is set to start against Cleveland All-Star MVP Shane Bieber (8-3, 3.49).

                          Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Giants (9-1 last 10)

Following a strong 6-1 road trip at Milwaukee and Colorado, the Giants returned home for an unexpected marathon with the Mets on Thursday. New York and San Francisco were deadlocked at 1-1 through 15 innings before the Mets took a 2-1 advantage in the top of the 16th. The Giants rebounded in the bottom half of the frame by scoring two runs and walking off past the Mets, 3-2 to pick up their 13th victory in the last 15 games.

San Francisco is listed as a heavy home underdog tonight against Jacob deGrom and the Mets as the Giants are seeking their sixth straight win in the ‘dog role. Tyler Beede takes the mound for San Francisco tonight as the Giants have won five of the right-hander’s last six starts, including recent victories at San Diego and Milwaukee. Beede was knocked around by the Mets at Citi Field in early June by allowing six runs in five innings of a 7-0 defeat.

Coldest team: Rockies (2-8 last 10)

Since winning consecutive games against the Dodgers in late June, the Rockies have dropped 11 of their past 13 games. The biggest lowlight of the season for Colorado came in a recent four-game home sweep at the hands of San Francisco this week, as the Rockies allowed 40 runs in the four defeats. Colorado has sunk to the bottom of the NL West along with San Diego following this skid, as the Rockies have lost five of their past seven series openers.

The Rockies face another tough test tonight with a trip out east for a three-game series with the Yankees in the Bronx. Kyle Freeland won 17 games in 2018 for Colorado, but the Rockies’ left-hander has taken a step back this season by posting a 7.39 ERA in 13 starts, while allowing five earned runs in his last outing against Cincinnati in a 17-9 defeat.

Hottest pitcher: Patrick Corbin, Nationals (7-5, 3.39 ERA)

Washington continues its torrid pace by winning its 14th game in the last 18 contests following Thursday’s blowout of Atlanta. Corbin was tagged for seven runs in a 7-5 loss to the White Sox on June 11. Five starts later, the Nationals’ southpaw has given up a total of six runs, while Washington is 5-0 in this stretch. Corbin is coming off consecutive double-digit strikeout performances against the Royals and Phillies, while tossing seven innings in four of the last five outings. Corbin has not faced the Braves this season, as he split a pair of matchups with Atlanta last season as a member of the D-backs.

Coldest pitcher: Jhoulys Chacin, Brewers (3-9, 5.18 ERA)

Milwaukee is riding a three-game winning streak since a 2-8 run as the Brewers pulled away from the D-backs last night in a 5-1 victory. Chacin is winless in his past three outings even though the right-hander has given up five earned runs in this stretch in 16 innings of work. Since May 12, the Brewers own a dismal 1-8 record in Chacin’s last nine starts, while Milwaukee has compiled an 0-8 mark in his past eight outings away from Miller Park. Chacin did pitch well against Arizona in two starts last season by allowing one run in 12 innings of work, but the Brewers scored one run in each of those contests to go 1-1.

Biggest OVER run: Rangers (8-2 last 10)

Texas sprang out of the All-Star break with a pair of impressive home wins over Houston. However, the Rangers have gone backwards of late by losing four straight games, including allowing 19 runs in Wednesday’s blowout loss to Arizona. During this OVER stretch, Texas has given up 19, 9, 12, 7, and 8 runs since blanking the Astros last Thursday. The last four OVERS for the Rangers have been on totals of 10 or higher as they send out ace Mike Minor to the mound tonight in Houston. Minor went through a seven-start stretch of UNDERS prior to OVERS in his last two outings, as the southpaw yielded four runs in a 7-6 loss to Houston last Saturday.

Biggest UNDER run: Orioles (7-2 last nine)

Baltimore is one victory away from 30 on the season, as the Orioles welcome in the Red Sox this weekend. The O’s are coming off a rare win with Wednesday’s comeback against the rival Nationals in a 9-2 upset, but the game remained UNDER the total of 11 ½. Baltimore scored a grand total of eight runs in its previous four games prior to Wednesday’s effort as the O’s crossed home plate eight times in the seventh and eighth innings alone. John Means takes the mound for Baltimore tonight as the southpaw has seen the OVER cash in four straight starts, but he has given up four earned runs in three starts against Boston this season.

Matchup to watch: Athletics vs. Twins

Minnesota snapped a season-high three-game losing streak in Thursday’s 6-3 comeback victory over Oakland at Target Field. The A’s led the Twins, 3-1 headed to the seventh inning prior to Minnesota busting out for five late runs, highlighted by a pinch-hit three-run home run from Eddie Rosario. Taking in consideration the All-Star break, Minnesota won its first game at Target Field since July 6 against Texas, while the Twins and A’s have split four meetings this season.

Jake Odorizzi seeks a career-high 12th victory for Minnesota tonight as the right-hander defeated Cleveland in the underdog role last Saturday, 6-2. Odorizzi scattered three hits and one run in 5.1 innings to pick up his first win since June 15, while allowing his fewest runs in a start since June 9 against Detroit. The former Rays’ hurler was tagged for six runs in three innings in an 8-6 defeat at Oakland on July 2, as Minnesota couldn’t hold onto an early 3-0 lead.

Chris Bassitt counters for Oakland, as the right-hander is fresh off his best start of the season in a 13-2 trouncing of the White Sox by posting six scoreless innings for his sixth victory of 2019. The A’s own a 4-1 record in Bassitt’s last five starts, while going 3-0 in his previous three opportunities as a road underdog. Oakland’s six-game winning streak was snapped on Thursday, as the A’s haven’t lost consecutive games since a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Texas on June 8.

                          Betcha didn’t know:
Both the White Sox and Mariners have yet to win since the All-Star break as the two teams try to break through this evening. Chicago visits Tampa Bay as a heavy road underdog, while Seattle hosts Los Angeles. The M’s were swept by the Angels last weekend in Anaheim, as Mike Leake allowed seven runs in less than one inning of work in a 13-0 loss. The only good news for Leake is the Mariners own a 4-2 record in the role of a home underdog, but the Angels are 5-1 in their last six opportunities in a road series opener.

                              STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                              STREAKING

                              Hyun-Jin Ryu, Los Angeles (10-2, 1.78 ERA, $572):
Well, nobody’s perfect, but Ryu is close. He’s responded from his worst start of the season by pitching 13 innings of 11 hit, two-run ball combined against the Red Sox and Padres.

Now, Ryu returns home to Dodger Stadium to take on the Marlins, where he is 7-0 with a ridiculous 0.85 ERA and a 0.77 WHIP. Not surprisingly, the Dodgers are massive -310 favorites. Maybe look at them on the alternate runline of -2.5 at a far more valuable +110.

                              SLUMPING

Kyle Freeland, Colorado Rockies (2-6, 7.39 ERA, $-289):
It has just been a downright brutal year for Kyle Freeland. The Rockies southpaw as struggled for the majority of his sophomore season, but this four-game stretch has been particularly bad. Freeland has a whopping 14.21 ERA and a 2.69 WHIP over those four starts. And his reward? A date with the homer-happy Bronx Bombers at Yankee Stadium. The Rockies are currently big +195 underdogs for this matchup with a total of 11.5.
