  • Braves edge Nationals on Donaldson's hit in ninth
    July 20, 2019
    By The Associated Press

SEATTLE (AP) Mike Leake of the Seattle Mariners lost his bid to pitch a perfect game on a leadoff single in the ninth inning by rookie Luis Rengifo, then finished off the Los Angeles Angels for a 10-0 win Friday night.

A week after the worst start of his career, Leake almost achieved baseball immortality.

The Angels hadn't come close to a hit and Leake hadn't gone to a three-ball count before Rengifo grounded a clean hit to right field on Leake's 79th pitch.

The fans gave Leake a standing ovation and he quickly waved to acknowledge their cheers.

After a walk, Leake (8-8) retired the next three batters for a one-hitter, striking out Mike Trout on a full-count pitch to end it. Leake fanned six overall and walked one.

Leake's second career shutout came exactly a week after he was tagged by the Angels in his previous start, giving up seven runs on eight hits and a walk while getting just two outs. The Angels pitched a combined no-hitter that night in Anaheim while the entire club wore jerseys honoring late teammate Tyler Skaggs.

Daniel Vogelbach hit two homers and drove in six runs as Seattle stopped a six-game losing streak.

    BRAVES 4, NATIONALS 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Josh Donaldson's bases-loaded single off Fernando Rodney in the ninth inning lifted Atlanta over Washington after Luke Jackson allowed a tying, two-run homer to Victor Robles in the top half.

Ronald Acuna Jr., who had three hits, led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk off Rodney (0-3) and took second on Dansby Swanson's single. Freddie Freeman walked on four pitches, loading the bases.

Nationals manager Dave Martinez brought in left fielder Juan Soto as a fifth infielder, including three on the left side against the right-handed hitting Donaldson.

Donaldson hit a 2-0 pitch over Robles to center-field warning track, and the Braves boosted their NL East lead to 6+ games over the second-place Nationals. Atlanta had lost its previous five home games against Washington.

    YANKEES 8, ROCKIES 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Edwin Encarnacion hit a go-ahead grand slam, a trio of ex-Rockies beat up on their former team and New York defeated Colorado.

Encarnacion lined his 12th career slam in the third inning off Kyle Freeland, and first-year Yankees DJ LeMahieu, Adam Ottavino and Mike Tauchman poured it on in their first games against their old club. LeMahieu had two hits and two RBIs, Ottavino struck out the side in a perfect relief inning and Tauchman had a career-high three hits, a stolen base and threw out a runner at home plate from left field.

Aaron Judge added a two-run homer, and J.A. Happ (8-5) struck out eight while pitching two-run ball over five innings for the Yankees. New York came from behind to win for a fourth straight game and improved to a major league-best 63-33 - 30 games over .500 for the first time this season. The Yankees lead second-place Tampa Bay by a season-high nine games in the AL East.

    ASTROS 4, RANGERS 3

HOUSTON (AP) - Justin Verlander struck out 12 in six solid innings, four Houston players hit solo home runs and the Astros held on to beat Texas.

Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez led off the third inning with consecutive home runs to extend Houston's lead to 4-0. Altuve hit his homer to left-center field, and Bregman sent his to left on the next pitch before Alvarez hit a 474-foot monster shot into the second deck in right field.

It was the first time the Astros had hit three straight homers since June, 20, 2018, against Tampa Bay.

Yuli Gurriel led off the second with a solo shot to left.

Verlander (12-4) allowed two runs and eight hits. The right-hander struck out at least 11 for the fourth time this season.

    ATHLETICS 5, TWINS 3

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Marcus Semien led off the game with a home run and later tripled and doubled as Oakland kept rolling, topping Minnesota on a sweltering night.

The temperature at first pitch was 94 degrees on a humid, muggy evening. It was tied for the second-hottest start in Target Field's 10-year history, trailing only a 97-degree reading on July 16, 2012.

Khris Davis hit a pair of RBI singles as the A's won for the 20th time in 26 games. The AL Central-leading Twins have lost four of five.

Chris Bassitt (7-4) allowed two earned runs in five innings. Liam Hendriks earned his seventh save by retiring the final five batters.

    DODGERS 2, MARLINS 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched seven strong innings and combined with Kenta Maeda and Kenley Jansen to help Los Angeles beat Miami.

Playing at Dodger Stadium for the first time since the All-Star break, the NL West leaders turned a Miami error into the go-ahead run in the sixth.

Ryu (11-2), who started for the National League in the All-Star game, gave up one run on four hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Maeda took over for Ryu in the eighth, his first relief appearance this season. Maeda is expected to return to the rotation, but he was used out of the bullpen this time after a 35-pitch, rain-shortened start Wednesday at Philadelphia.

    GIANTS 1, METS 0, 10 INNINGS.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Alex Dickerson raced home from first on a botched fly ball to shallow left field with two outs in the 10th inning and San Francisco won its season-high seventh straight game.

On a night dominated by starting pitchers Jacob deGrom of New York and Tyler Beede of San Francisco, it took a misplay in the field to score the only run of the game. Pablo Sandoval hit a fly ball off Jacob Rhame (0-1) that looked like it would be a routine out to end the inning. But left fielder Dominic Smith came in and misplayed the ball for an error, perhaps distracted by shortstop Amed Rosario.

Dickerson never stopped running and scored when cutoff man Todd Frazier's throw home was off target, sending the Giants pouring out of the dugout in celebration. The victory lifted the Giants' record to 49-49, the first time they have been at .500 since the start of the season.

Sam Dyson (4-1) pitched a perfect 10th for the win.

    DIAMONDBACKS 10, BREWERS 7

PHOENIX (AP) - Christian Walker hit a two-run homer to cap the first natural cycle in Arizona's history, lifting the Diamondbacks over Milwaukee.

The Diamondbacks broke open the game with six runs in the third inning against Jhoulys Chacin (3-10), punctuated by hitting a single, double, triple and home run in four straight at-bats.

Arizona's Eduardo Escobar homered and had a run-scoring triple, and All-Star Ketel Marte had two RBIs for a career-high 60.

Archie Bradley (3-4) allowed a hit in 1 1/3 innings and Greg Holland worked a perfect ninth for his 16th save.

Christian Yelich hit a two-run homer, his majors-leading 35th, and Lorenzo Cain hit a solo shot for the Brewers, who scored three runs in the seventh inning to pull within 10-7.

    WHITE SOX 9, RAYS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Leury Garcia had four hits, including three doubles, Reynaldo Lopez won for the first time in six starts and Chicago stopped a seven-game losing streak by beating slumping Tampa Bay.

Garcia became the first White Sox player to have three doubles in a game since Adam Eaton against Minnesota on Aug. 2, 2014.

Lopez (5-8) gave up two runs and six hits in seven innings with eight strikeouts. He had been 0-2 with a 5.34 ERA since beating Kansas City on June 9.

Tampa Bay dropped a season-high nine games behind the AL East-leading Yankees after arriving about 3:30 a.m. following a doubleheader loss in New York. The Rays have dropped behind Cleveland and Oakland for the two AL wild-card spots. The Rays held an eight-game lead over the third-place team in the wild-card race at the start of play on June 11 but have lost 20 of 35 since.

Rays rookie Brendan McKay (1-1) lasted just 3 1/3 innings in his fourth start, allowing six runs - five earned - and nine hits as his ERA doubled from 1.69 to 3.72.

    ORIOLES 11, RED SOX 2

BALTIMORE (AP) - Anthony Santander and Keon Broxton homered off David Price, and Baltimore got six solid innings from rookie right-hander John Means in a rout of Boston.

Price (7-3) allowed six runs, eight hits and a walk in four innings to take his first loss in 13 starts since April 27. The left-hander was 8-0 at Camden Yards and 16-5 lifetime against the Orioles before turning in a surprisingly ineffective performance in 96-degree heat against the team with the worst record in the big leagues.

Sam Travis homered for the Red Sox, who had won 14 of their previous 16 road games.

Boston leadoff hitter Mookie Betts had his streak of scoring in 13 straight games come to an end, one short of breaking the franchise record he now shares with Ted Williams (1946).

Means (8-5), the Orioles' lone representative on the AL All-Star team, gave up two runs and four hits.

    CARDINALS 12, REDS 11

CINCINNATI (AP) - Jose Martinez homered and singled during a 10-run rally in the sixth inning and St. Louis overcame a seven-run deficit for a wild win over Cincinnati.

Down 7-0, the Cardinals put together their biggest inning of the season on the way to their sixth win in seven games.

Jesse Winker hit a two-out, two-run single in the ninth off Cardinals closer Carlos Martinez. But Joey Votto grounded out with runners at the corners to give Martinez his seventh save.

Journeyman catcher Ryan Lavarnway hit two homers, doubled and drove in a career-high six runs for Cincinnati in his first game in the majors this season.

    BLUE JAYS 12, TIGERS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Marcus Stroman breezed through seven scoreless innings, and Toronto batted around in both the fourth and the sixth on its way to a rout of Detroit.

Teoscar Hernandez homered for Toronto, which scored four runs in the fourth and five in the sixth, sending 10 batters to the plate in each inning. The Tigers lost for the 26th time in their last 29 home games. That does not include a May 19 game in which Detroit was also losing when the contest was suspended.

Stroman (6-10) allowed six hits. The All-Star right-hander struck out five with no walks in what was his first career start at Detroit.

Jordan Zimmermann (0-7) is now winless in his last 16 starts.

    PHILLIES 6, PIRATES 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Bryce Harper's go-ahead RBI single was one of 15 hits Philadelphia used to beat Pittsburgh.

Harper hit a seventh-inning single off Pirates reliever Richard Rodriguez (3-4) that scored pinch-hitter Brad Miller to give the Phillies their first lead of the game.

Rookie outfielder Adam Haseley added a solo homer to start the scoring and a run-scoring double to cap it for the Phillies. The rally made a winner of Juan Nicasio (2-3), who pitched one-third of an inning in relief of starter Jake Arrieta.

    INDIANS 10, ROYALS 5

CLEVELAND (AP) - Rookie Oscar Mercado went 5 for 5 and drove in two runs as Cleveland won its sixth straight game, beating Kansas City.

Mercado had an RBI double in the third inning and a run-scoring single in the sixth. He also scored twice.

Mercado is batting .423 (11 for 26) with three home runs and eight RBIs over the last eight games. He was called up from Triple-A Columbus on May 14 and became the 12th Indians rookie since 1913 to have at least five hits in a game.

Shane Bieber (9-3), making his second start since being named MVP of the All-Star Game held at Progressive Field, allowed five runs in 5 2/3 innings.

    CUBS 6, PADRES 5

CHICAGO (AP) - Anthony Rizzo hit a grand slam and Chicago overcame an early home run by Manny Machado to beat San Diego.

Javier Baez also homered for the NL Central-leading Cubs, who have won six of seven since the All-Star break.

Josh Naylor tied the score 5-5 in the eighth inning against Pedro Strop (2-3) with his first career pinch homer, but the Cubs went back ahead in the bottom half.

Anthony Rizzo singled off Craig Stammen (6-5), rookie shortstop Fernandez Tatis Jr. threw Addison Russell's grounder into center field for an error, Jason Heyward was intentionally walked and David Bote hit a grounder to third. Machado threw home for a forceout and catcher Francisco Mejia threw to first, even though he didn't have a play on Bote. The ball hit off the glove of first baseman Eric Hosmer and bounced into short right field as Rizzo scored on Hosmer's error.

        • Weekend Watch
          Joe Williams

          Saturday, July 20

The red-hot Athletics square off against the skidding Twins at Target Field. It's a strong pitching matchup, too, as LHP Brett Anderson takes the ball for the A's against RHP Jose Berrios for the home side. The A's continue their series looking to improve on their impressive road record. They're 20-7 across the past 27 road games, and they're 7-2 in the past nine road outings against a right-handed starting pitcher. They're also a perfect 6-0 in the past six in Game 3 of a series, while going 5-0 in Anderson's past five roado utings. They're also 6-1 in Anderson's past seven starts overall, and 4-0 in his past four on the road against winning sides.

For the Twins, they have won just once in the past five outings, and they're 1-4 in the past five at home, too. While they're 25-8 in the past 33 starts by Berrios, the Twins have managed a 3-9 record over his past 12 starts against American League West clubs, and they're 1-5 in his past six outings overall. Minnesota has bounced back nicely after losses, however, going 28-10 in the past 38 following a setback. They're also 16-5 in the past 21 games on a Saturday, for whatever that's worth.

If you're interested in the total, the under is 7-1 in Minnesota's past eight outings, while going 4-1 in the past five games at Target Field. The under is also 6-0 in the past six for Minnesota against teams with a winning overall mark. However, the over is 5-1-1 in the past seven for the Twins when Berrios is on the bump at home. The over is also 22-10-3 in the past 35 games against a left-handed starter, and 13-6-1 in the past 20 at home vs. LHP. For the A's, the under is 7-2 in the past nine overall, and 4-0 in his past four road outings.

The Brewers wheel out LHP Gio Gonzalez to face RHP Zack Greinke as they continue their road series with the Diamondbacks. Milwaukee has won just three times in the past 12 road outings, and they're 1-4 in the past five road games against a team with a losing home record. They're also 1-6 in the past seven road games vs. RHP, while going 2-8 in the past 10 against righties. Gonzalez has been the stopper, however, as Milwaukee has won four of his past five starts, and five of his past six against winning teams.

The Snakes are an impressive 7-3 in their past 10 overall, while going 5-1 in the past six at home and 5-1 in the past six against winning teams. They're also 6-1 in Greinke's past seven home outings against teams with a winning overall record, 6-2 in his past eight starts overall and a perfect 8-0 when he takes the ball on a Saturday. Arizona is also an impressive 37-17 in the past 54 home outings by Greinke, too. In this series, Milwaukee has won five of the past six, and the over is 7-3 in the past 10 meetings at Chase Field in the Valley of the Sun.

In Detroit, the Jays and Tigers will see a wind from 11-14 mph blowing from first base to third base with hot and humid conditions like in Chicago. At Wrigley Field, the Padres and Cubs will see an 11-14 mph wind blowing in from left-center field to home play with a 20 percent chance of showers. Like Saturday, however, those are the only trouble spots, and precipitation is not in the cards. Enjoy the tarpaulin-free baseball weekend!

                      • Heat wave, surging Giants and Indians
                        July 20, 2019
                        By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                        BE CAREFUL

The extreme heat gripping much of the country is having an effect around the major leagues. The Yankees and Rockies have called off most of the pregame activities for their afternoon game - New York is forecast to come close to its first 100-degree day since 2012.

It is expected to be 100 in Baltimore, where the Orioles host Boston at night.

And it was 94 at Target Field on Friday night - the second-hottest start in park's 10-year history, trailing only a 97-degree reading on July 16, 2012 - when Minnesota faced Oakland.

Players appeared to have trouble at times gripping the ball. Twins starter Jake Odorizzi took off his glove during a mound visit in the first inning and peppered both arms with the rosin bag.

''It was only like pitching in a rain forest,'' Odorizzi said. ''I was taking the rosin bag and going up and down my arms so I could stop the sweat coming from my hand because I was just pouring sweat. I changed my jersey after the first inning, my hat. I just took it all off and came back fresh. I was pretty drenched out there and I know a lot of guys were in the same place.''

                        MOVING UP

San Francisco is back to .500 and has surged into the NL wild-card race, thanks to a seven-game winning streak. Jeff Samardzija and the Giants try to keep it going at home, a day after a botched flyball in the 10th inning gave them a 1-0 victory over the Mets. ... The Indians have moved into playoff contention by winning six in a row. Adam Plutko starts for Cleveland at home against Kansas City.

                        ALL SET

The Brewers are expected to activate Gio Gonzalez from the 10-day injured list to start at Arizona. The 33-year-old lefty was 2-1 with a 3.19 ERA in six starts for Milwaukee before being sidelined by arm fatigue.

Gonzalez made rehab starts with Class A Carolina and Triple-A San Antonio after going on the injured list May 29.

                        WHAT A RELIEF

Red Sox right-hander Nathan Eovaldi is ready to rejoin the Red Sox after missing three months because of elbow surgery. Although he appeared as a starter in all four of his games in April, the 29-year-old will return as a member of the bullpen, possibly the closer.

Eovaldi is expected to be activated for the game in Baltimore.

                        WELCOME BACK

Journeyman catcher Ryan Lavarnway was a big hit in his return to the majors. With the Reds needing a backstop after a series of injuries left them thin behind the plate, they signed the 31-year-old on Thursday after he was released by the Yankees - he had batted .213 in a Triple-A backup role.

Lavarnway hit two homers, doubled and drove in a career-high six runs as Cincinnati lost to St. Louis 12-11 on Friday night. Lavarnway had played a total of 12 games in the big leagues in the last four seasons.

                          STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                          STREAKING

Jeff Samardzija, San Francisco Giants (7-7, 3.93 ERA, $392):
Samardzija has done his part to help out the Giants’ hot streak. The big right-hander has pitched to a 1.66 ERA and a 0.74 WHIP while limiting opponents to a .207 on base percentage over his last three starts. Samardzija and the Giants are -145 home favorites for this afternoon’s matchup with the Mets.

                          SLUMPING

Rick Porcello, Boston Red Sox (7-7, 5.37 ERA, $77):
The Red Sox are starting to turn things around, but they’re going to need better starting pitching if their going to get over the hump. Porcello has been inconsistent all season, but his current slump has been particularly rough. The right-hander has an ugly ERA of 10.50 and a WHIP of 2.00 over his last four starts. Maybe a matchup with the Orioles will help Porcello get back on track, where the he and the BoSox are hefty -220 road faves.

                          • Guerrero hits 1st slam, Blue Jays rally past Tigers 7-5
                            July 20, 2019
                            By The Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his first career grand slam, a 441-foot drive toward the bushes at Comerica Park that helped the Toronto Blue Jays rally for a 7-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday night.

Guerrero's home run erased a 5-1 deficit in the fifth, and Brandon Drury added a two-run shot an inning later to put Toronto ahead. Niko Goodrum and John Hicks went deep for the Tigers, who are 7-33 since the start of June.

Goodrum's two-run homer in the second gave Detroit a 3-1 lead, but a 59-minute rain delay in the fourth knocked out both starting pitchers.

Wilmer Font (2-0) came on in the bottom of the fourth and gave up a two-run homer to Hicks that put the Tigers up by four, but Gregory Soto (0-4) gave away the advantage quickly. Toronto loaded the bases in the fifth, then Guerrero hit his home run a bit to the left of straightaway center. It was the ninth homer of the season for the rookie slugger, who had three hits in a win Friday and two more on Saturday.

Drury's homer gave the Blue Jays the lead, and the Tigers didn't score again off the Toronto bullpen. Ken Giles struck out three in the ninth for his 14th save in 15 chances.

                            RED SOX 17, ORIOLES 6

BALTIMORE (AP) - Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a pair of three-run homers, Mookie Betts homered and had three RBIs, and Boston routed Baltimore with its most prolific offensive performance of the year.

Rafael Devers and Sandy Leon also went deep for the Red Sox. Bradley's second home run of the game highlighted an eight-run fourth inning that turned a tie into a 13-5 runaway.

It was Boston's highest-scoring outburst since a 19-3 rout of Baltimore last Sept. 26.

Rick Porcello (8-7) won his third straight start despite giving up six runs and 11 hits in five innings.

Anthony Santander had a career-high four hits, including a homer, and Renato Nunez also connected for Orioles.

                            NATIONALS 5, BRAVES 3

ATLANTA (AP) - Anibal Sanchez outpitched Mike Soroka and scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning, Matt Adams homered and Washington beat Atlanta.

Second-place Washington pulled within 5+ games of the NL East-leading Braves.

Sanchez (6-6) got a big assist in the bottom of the fifth when shortstop Trea Turner turned a bases-loaded double play. He allowed three runs and six hits.

Sean Doolittle got the last five outs for his 21st save in 25 chances.

Brian McCann hit a two-run homer, his ninth, in the sixth. Soroka (10-2) allowed four runs and nine hits in six innings.

                            ATHLETICS 5, TWINS 4

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Khris Davis lined a two-out, two-run single off the glove of diving first baseman Ehire Adrianza in the ninth inning and Oakland beat Minnesota.

The A's won for the 21st time in 27 games. Miguel Sano, Mitch Garver and Nelson Cruz all homered for the AL Central-leading Twins, who have lost five of six.

Minnesota reliever Taylor Rogers (2-2) retired the first two batters in the ninth. But he then hit Mark Canha with a pitch and gave up a double to Ramon Laureano. Davis followed by going the other way, and Adrianza made a dive into the hole and tried to backhand the ball, but it deflected off his mitt and rolled into shallow right field.

Closer Liam Hendriks recorded his eighth save.

Blake Treinen (3-3) escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and earned the win.

                            WHITE SOX 2, RAYS 1, 11 INNINGS

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Yoan Moncada scored from first base on a single in the 11th inning and Chicago beat Tampa Bay.

Moncada drew a walk off Adam Kolarek (3-3) to lead off the 11th, and sprinted around the bases when Jose Abreu punched a single into right field off Chaz Roe.

Jace Fry (2-4) got the win in relief, and Alex Colome pitched the 11th for his 21st save in 22 attempts.

The loss was Tampa Bay's season-high fifth straight and dropped the Rays 10 games behind the AL East-leading New York Yankees.

James McCann homered in the top of the ninth to tie the game.

Avisail Garcia homered in the seventh for Tampa Bay.

Encarnacion added an RBI double in the seventh, and DJ LeMahieu raised his AL-leading average to .334 with three hits.

Senzatela (8-7) allowed six runs, seven hits and two walks in 1 1/3 innings, the shortest of 51 career starts. His ERA rose to 6.29.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Pete Alonso came off the bench and hit his 33rd home run, setting the Mets rookie record for RBIs as New York snapped San Francisco's seven-game winning streak.

Dominic Smith, Jeff McNeil and Todd Frazier all went deep for the Mets. Walker Lockett (1-1) pitched five mostly sharp innings to earn his first major league victory.

Pablo Sandoval singled four times for the Giants. San Francisco (49-50) had won 14 of 16 and was attempting to get above .500 for the first time this season.

Alonso's three-run homer off Derek Holland gave him 75 RBIs, one more than Darryl Strawberry had as a Mets rookie in 1983. Alonso already holds the franchise rookie records for home runs and extra-base hits.

Michael Lorenzen earned his sixth save.

                            ROYALS 1, INDIANS 0

Right-hander Plutko (3-2) worked a season-high seven innings, giving up two hits.

HOUSTON (AP) - Jose Urquidy threw seven dominant innings for his first major league win and Yuli Gurriel hit a three-run homer, sending Houston past Texas.

Making his third career start, Urquidy (1-0) held the Rangers to two baserunners - a homer by Shin-Soo Choo and an infield single by Hunter Pence. The 24-year-old rookie right-hander from Mexico struck out nine.

Tony Kemp also homered as Houston won its fourth straight and handed Texas its sixth consecutive defeat.

Urquidy retired his first nine batters before Choo's homer to center field in the fourth. Then he set down the next 11 hitters until Pence's single in the seventh.

Rangers starter Ariel Jurado (5-6) allowed five runs and eight hits while striking out five in five innings.

                            PIRATES 5, PHILLIES 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Joe Musgrove scattered two hits over six innings, collected his first double of the season and scored on a textbook head-first slide to lead Pittsburgh over Philadelphia.

Musgrove (7-8) tied a season high with eight strikeouts, walked two and allowed only an unearned run in the sixth to win his third consecutive decision.

Starling Marte went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI, and Corey Dickerson added two doubles and an RBI as Pittsburgh won for just second time in eight games.

The Phillies managed just three singles against Musgrove and three Pittsburgh relievers to fall to 4-5 since the All-Star break.

Zach Eflin (7-10) lasted just four innings, giving up three runs on five hits with three strikeouts.

                            BREWERS 8, DIAMONDBACKS 3

PHOENIX (AP) - Mike Moustakas hit a three-run homer in the eighth and Milwaukee scored six runs after Zack Greinke left to beat Arizona.

Greinke, who also had a run-scoring double, allowed two runs and struck out nine in seven innings. He moved into 29th on baseball's all-time strikeouts list, leaving with a 3-2 lead.

He was replaced by Andrew Chafin (0-2), who allowed an infield single and a walk to set the table for Moustakas' 26th homer.

Keston Hiura had a two-run single in the ninth and Christian Yelich added a run-scoring double for his third hit.

Adrian Houser (3-4) allowed a hit in 1 1/3 innings and Eric Thames hit a solo homer for the Brewers, who have won four of five.

Greinke (2,548) passed No. 31 Tim Keefe (2,555) and No. 30 Jerry Koosman (2,556) on baseball's all-time strikeouts list.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday……

                                13) The more I think about it, with today’s society having such a short attention span, major league baseball should go to a split-season format— you’d have to move the trading deadline, either up to the end of the All-Star break, or back to August 31.

Just think it would create more interest in a period of the summer where the NBA gets far too much attention, between the NBA Draft and then summer league. You could have a second Opening Day, and teams that floundered in the first half would get a second chance.

                                12) Jacob deGrom has a 2.18 ERA in his last 52 starts, but only 15 wins in those starts.

The last seven times he threw 7+ innings without allowing a run, he won only twice.

                                11) Miami Marlins scored 2 or fewer runs in 11 of Trevor Richards’ 19 starts.

Marlins scored 6+ runs in all six of Jordan Yamamoto’s starts.

                                10) Nick Pivetta has started 13 games for Philly; they didn’t score in first five innings in six of those 13 games, including the last four in a row.

                                9) This is a weird stat; Pittsburgh’s Jordan Lyles has started 17 major league games in July; his team is 0-17 in those games, with last nine going over the total.

                                8) A’s 5, Twins 4— Khris Davis hit a huge two-out single in the top 9th inning, then Liam Hendriks escaped a bases loaded jam in the bottom as Oakland gets an excellent road win.

                                7) Baseball stuff:
                                — Angels DFA’d P Matt Harvey, who may be running out of chances.
                                — Astros DFA’d 1B Tyler White, who wlll get signed by another team.
                                — Twins traded P Mike Morin to the Phillies for cash.
                                — Tigers put P Spencer Turnbull (back) on the IL.

                                6) Oklahoma/Central Florida will play a home/home basketball series starting next winter; it would be more interesting if they started a home/home football series.

                                5) A new FanDuel sports book opened this week at Tioga Downs casino resort, which is between Elmira and Binghamton in the southern tier of New York.

                                4) Dodgers 10, Marlins 6— Dodgers have blown five saves in their last seven games; they had five blown saves in their previous 35 games. LA did win, though; they lead NL West by 15 games.

                                3) It is so hot this weekend that police in Braintree, MA are asking would-be criminals to hold off on committing crimes until Monday. Really, they are.

Committing a crime in this sort of weather is “next level henchmen status,” the Braintree PD said, not to mention dangerous to the offender’s health.

                                Alrighty then.

                                2) Would’ve been cool if one of the Apollo 11 astronauts had taken a picture of Alice Kramden to the moon.

                                1) 50 years ago yesterday was the moon landing, and it was also Vida Blue’s big league debut as a 19-year old pitcher. Blue gave up five runs (three earned) in 5.1 IP in a 7-3 loss to the Angels. He threw a no-hitter in 1970 and became one of baseball’s biggest stars in 1971, as a 21-year old.
