  • Judge powers Yankees past Rays in 11
    July 5, 2019
    By The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) Hunter Renfroe hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning, Eric Lauer threw two strikes in the midst of a strong earthquake that rattled the stadium, and the San Diego Padres edged the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 Friday night.

All-Star lefty Clayton Kershaw pitched seven sharp innings for the Dodgers, but the loss snapped their nine-game home winning streak.

Lauer was facing Enrique Hernandez when the quake struck in the fourth. Lauer's first three pitches of the at-bat - including two strikes - came during the shaking that unnerved some fans in the crowd of 49,790 enough to move from their seats in the upper reserve level and caused the press box to lurch for several seconds.

Early magnitude estimates from the U.S. Geological Survey wavered between 6.9 and 7.1.

The TV broadcast was marred by the camera bouncing up and down.

Hernandez appeared to react to the quake by stepping out of the batter's box after Lauer's third pitch. He eventually flied out to left field to end the inning.

There was nothing said by the public address announcer regarding the quake.

Renfroe's 26th homer off Yimi Garcia (1-3) came with two outs.

Craig Stammen (6-4) got the victory in relief. Kirby Yates earned his 28th save.

    YANKEES 8, RAYS 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Aaron Judge hit his second homer of the game leading off the 11th inning, Brett Gardner added a three-run shot as New York beat Tampa Bay.

Judge connected on the first pitch from Ryne Stanek (0-2) to give him nine career multihomer games. The slugger also went deep in the first against two-way player Brendan McKay as New York extended its AL East lead over Tampa Bay to a season-high 8 1/2 games.

Aaron Hicks tied it in the eighth with a pinch-hit homer for the Yankees.

David Hale (2-0) left with two on and one out in the 11th. Aroldis Chapman walked Travis d'Arnaud with two outs but got a lineout from Tommy Pham to get his 24th save.

The Yankees got also got a pinch-hit homer from Aaron Hicks.

McKay allowed three runs and six hits over five innings in his second pitching start.

Nate Lowe hit his first major league homer and Mike Zunino also went deep for the Rays.

    BRAVES 1, MARLINS 0

ATLANTA (AP) - Brian McCann hit a bases-loaded single with one out in the ninth inning to lift Atlanta over Miami, which has lost five straight.

The game was delayed 2 hours, 28 minutes by rain.

The Braves had only three hits before the winning rally.

Freddie Freeman led off the ninth with a double. Jose Quijada (0-3) issued an intentional walk to Josh Donaldson, and the runners advanced on a groundout by Nick Markakis. Quijada loaded the bases with an intentional walk to Austin Riley.

The Marlins brought JT Riddle in from center field to play as a fifth infielder, including three on the right side.

McCann foiled the strategy with his line-drive single to left field.

Luke Jackson (4-2) earned the win.

    ANGELS 5, ASTROS 4

HOUSTON (AP) - Mike Trout hit his AL-leading 26th homer, and Kole Calhoun, Shohei Ohtani and Andrelton Simmons also went deep to give Los Angeles a win over Houston.

Calhoun, Ohtani and Simmons all connected off Houston starter Justin Verlander (10-4) as he gave up three home runs for the third time in his last five starts.

The Angels won for the third time in the four games since pitcher Tyler Skaggs was found dead in his hotel room on Monday. The victory snaps a seven-game skid against Houston and ends a five-game winning streak overall by the Astros.

Noe Ramirez opened the game and threw a perfect first before Felix Pena (6-2) took over and allowed three hits and two runs while striking out five in four innings.

Michael Brantley homered and tied a career high with four hits and Yuli Gurriel had a two-run shot as he homered for the third straight game.

Hansel Robles pitched a perfect ninth for his 12th save.

Verlander allowed seven hits and struck out six to move past Hall of Famer Jim Bunning for 18th place on the all-time strikeouts list with 2,859.

    PHILLIES 7, METS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Jay Bruce hit a go-ahead single in the ninth inning off closer Edwin Diaz, Mets manager Mickey Callaway lost an early replay challenge that might have cost him late and Philadelphia beat New York.

Nine days after blowing a save in Philadelphia, Diaz (1-6) allowed J.T. Realmuto's double and Bruce's RBI single to start the ninth, which snapped a 2-all tie. The Phillies poured it on after that, batting around and scoring five runs against Diaz, Jeurys Familia and Luis Avilan.

The Phillies have won six straight over the Mets for the first time since a nine-game streak spanning 2007 and `08.

Mets ace Jacob DeGrom allowed two runs and three hits over seven innings, striking out 10 after allowing a homer to Scott Kingery on the first pitch of the game.

Brandon Drury hit a two-out solo homer in the seventh, his eighth, for Toronto.

    BREWERS 7, PIRATES 6, 10 INNINGS

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Lorenzo Cain delivered a go-ahead RBI single off Pittsburgh closer Felipe Vazquez in the top of the 10th inning and Milwaukee recovered after blowing a five-run lead in the ninth, snapping a three-game losing streak.

Pittsburgh erased a 6-1 deficit in the ninth. Starling Marte's sacrifice fly scored Melky Cabrera and got Pittsburgh going. Josh Bell followed with a three-run shot to get Pittsburgh within one. Milwaukee reliever Junior Guerra's first pitch to Jung Ho Kang ended up in the left-field bleachers to tie the game.

The Brewers bounced back against Vazquez (2-1). Orlando Arcia singled with one out, moved to third on Manny Pina's single and scored when Cain's sharp grounder got through the hole between first and second base.

Arcia finished 2 for 4, including his 12th homer. Pina and Jesus Aguilar hit two-run shots.

    ROYALS 7, NATIONALS 4, 11 INNINGS

WASHINGTON (AP) - Adalberto Mondesi hit a go-ahead single in the 11th inning, and Kansas City snapped a four-game losing streak with a win over Washington.

The Nationals, who had won four in a row and eight of their last nine, left 19 men on base - including the bases loaded in the sixth, seventh and 10th innings.

Jonny Venters (0-1), Washington's fifth reliever, loaded the bases with no outs before striking out Whit Merrifield. However, Mondesi poked a single to left past a drawn-in infield to score a run. Alex Gordon then hit a grounder to first baseman Ryan Zimmerman, whose wild throw home allowed two runs to score.

Brian Flynn (2-0) escaped a bases-loaded jam, and Wily Peralta worked the 11th for his second save.

SEATTLE (AP) - Franklin Barreto hit his first home run of the season, Robbie Grossman added a pinch-hit, two-run double in the ninth inning, and Oakland beat Seattle.

The A's won for the sixth time in seven games, thanks to a strong start by Brett Anderson and some key hits in the late innings.

Oakland took advantage of two errors by Seattle right fielder Domingo Santana on one play in the seventh inning to take the lead and cost Mariners lefty Yusei Kikuchi a chance at a victory in his best start since early May. Grossman provided insurance in the ninth lining a two-out shot off the wall against reliever Dan Altavilla.

Anderson (9-5) pitched into the seventh inning for the fifth time in six starts. He allowed two earned runs or less for the third time in his past four outings. Anderson struck out four and walked none.

Kikuchi (4-6) pitched seven innings for just the third time this season. He struck out five and allowed four hits.

    TWINS 15, RANGERS 6

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jorge Polanco homered on his 26th birthday, Martin Perez held his former team scoreless until the seventh inning and Minnesota routed Texas.

Polanco and rookie Luis Arraez went deep in a six-run second. Those homers, plus long balls by Jonathan Schoop and Mitch Garver, gave the Twins a major league-record 165 before the All-Star break.

In the second, the Twins slugged six extra-base hits in an inning for the first time in 53 years.

Perez (8-3) took a four-hit shutout into the seventh before giving up a walk and three consecutive hits for two runs.

Adrian Simpson (6-6) took the loss.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Jose Martinez, Paul Goldschmidt and Dexter Fowler homered, Tommy Edman tripled in the go-ahead run in the fourth inning and St. Louis beat San Francisco.

Drew Pomeranz (2-9) took the loss.

Dakota Hudson (7-4) overcame three first-inning walks to win, allowing three runs with six strikeouts in five innings.

        — Mets’ bullpen in Jacob deGrom’s starts: 51 ER allowed in 49.1 IP.

        — Mets 2B Jeff MacNeil was a judge at the Nathan’s hot dog eating contest.

        — The ABC affiliate in Albany is off my DirecTV; they have about 40 days to fix that, or I’m back to cable TV. Need ABC for college football Saturdays.

        — All four Braves’ starting infielders homered Thursday; the last time this Braves did that was September 19, 1961.

        — If the baseball playoffs started today (they don’t):
AL: New York-Minnesota-Houston. Wild Card: Indians @ Rays

NL: Atlanta-Milwaukee-Los Angeles. Wild Card: Nationals @ Cubs

        — An earthquake in California was felt in Las Vegas; the two late games in the NBA Summer League were postponed, and the Knicks-Pelicans game was cut short in 3rd quarter.

Saturday’s List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here…….

        13) Few years ago I was in Las Vegas during the All-Star break, was staying at Planet Hollywood. I’m playing video poker at the bar in the sportsbook during Home Run Derby, and for over an hour, all I heard was Chris Berman’s annoying “back!!! back!!! back!!!” calling the home runs.

I mean, its freakin’ Home Run Derby; stop getting excited every time one is hit.

Finally I offered the bartender $50 if he would mute the TV’s; he laughed. Turned out to be a good thing for me; I escaped the sportsbook and Berman’s voice, went out and played blackjack in the casino and won $100, so guess I should thank Berman for being annoying.

        12) Miami Marlins have won two World Series, but have never been in first place on July 4th.

Teams with longest droughts since they were last in first place on the 4th of July: Toronto and Colorado, who were both in first place on July 4, 2000.

        11) In 1997, a guy named Bubba Wells fouled out of an NBA game in three minutes. Really.

Wells went to Austin Peay, played 39 games for the Mavericks in 1997-98, scoring 3.3 ppg. On December 29, 1997 in Chicago, he scored a basket and fouled out in three minutes.

Should be noted that he also scored 21 in a game against the Spurs later that season.

        10) Sam Mitchell, an analyst on NBA TV for the summer league games, told a story about how coach Bill Fitch would have the bench filmed during exhibition games, to see which guys were paying attention to the game and rooting for their teammates when they weren’t playing.

Every basketball team has a few guys who don’t play much; they can’t be a distraction, have to be good teammates.

        9) I’ve said this many times; if you like the NBA, go to Las Vegas in July and watch the summer league— you’ll probably meet some players or coaches if you want to. It is affordable and it is fun, plus the gyms are air conditioned when it is 100 or so degrees outside.

        8) Bryce Harper got his 200th career home run and his 1,000 career hit at the same time in the 6th inning Wednesday; a nitwit fan in Atlanta cost himself some swag by throwing the ball back on the field. For trivia buffs, Bryce Wilson was the pitcher.

        7) Baseball stuff:
        — Astros’ P Corbin Martin had Tommy John surgery Wednesday.
        — Tigers put P Victor Alcantara (wisdom teeth) on IL.
        — Tigers put OF JaCoby Jones (back) on IL.
        — Reds put P Amir Garrett (lat strain) on IL.

        6) Monday afternoon, Detroit’s Matthew Boyd became the first pitcher EVER to strike out 13 batters, walk none, but not finish the 6th inning- he allowed nine hits, four runs in 5.1 IP.

        5) Washington Nationals are wearing Montreal Expo throwback uniforms Saturday, which raises the question if Montreal will be getting an expansion team soon, or will the Rays move there? Sounds like a strong possibility that one of those things will happen.

        4) Jimmer Fredette left the Warriors’ summer league team and isn’t with the team in Las Vegas; he played in the Warriors’ first two games in Sacramento this week, but apparently got some lucrative offers from foreign clubs and he doesn’t want to risk an injury.
        3) All four Braves’ starting infielders homered Thursday night; the last time this Braves did that was September 19, 1961.

        2) This year’s baseball schedule is odd; 12 games on the 4th of July, then only 13 games the next night, a Friday night. Next year will be easier, with July 4th on a Saturday. Once they expand to 32 teams, scheduling becomes way easier.

        1) Whats the worst day to have a birthday? February 29? Christmas? July 3rd? January 2nd? July 5? Most of the people I asked about this chose Christmas as the worst day— everyone else gets presents too.

December 26th might be an underrated day to have a birthday; people can go to the **** and get stuff on sale- do those people get more gifts than other people?

        • LEADING OFF: Scherzer, Cole, Giolito, Bieber tune up for ASG
          July 6, 2019
          By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

          ---

          CALENDAR CLUB

Nationals ace Max Scherzer, the NL pitcher of the month for June, and Astros right-hander Gerrit Cole, who took the American League prize, make their final starts before heading to the All-Star Game. Scherzer (8-5, 2.43 ERA) was 6-0 with a 1.00 ERA in six June outings and is scheduled to come off the paternity list to face Kansas City. Cole (8-5, 3.28) takes the ball against Mike Trout and the Angels having won four straight decisions.

          THE CHICAGO WAY

Following a rare Friday off for both teams, Windy City rivals meet on the South Side in the opener of a two-game interleague series. All-Star pitcher Lucas Giolito (11-2, 2.72 ERA) starts for the Chicago White Sox against Jon Lester and (7-6, 3.89) and the Cubs, who are 9-15 in their last 24 games.

          THE REPLACEMENTS

Shane Bieber (7-3, 3.54 ERA) pitches for Cleveland at Cincinnati, one day after being added to the American League roster for Tuesday night's All-Star Game. The right-hander joins Indians teammates Carlos Santana, Francisco Lindor and Brad Hand as hometown representatives.

Oakland reliever Liam Hendriks and Dodgers infielder Max Muncy also were selected as All-Star substitutes Friday. Bieber and Hendriks will replace Rays right-hander Charlie Morton and Rangers left-hander Mike Minor on the AL squad. Morton and Minor are both scheduled to start Sunday.

Muncy takes the spot of Washington third baseman Anthony Rendon, who chose to skip the game to rest nagging injuries. It is Muncy's first All-Star nod, although he competed in last year's Home Run Derby.

          FAREWELL TOUR

Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia (5-4, 4.04 ERA) faces Tampa Bay in his last start before the All-Star Game, where he will be honored by Major League Baseball on Tuesday night. Sabathia is in the final season of his 19-year career. He'll be recognized for his contributions to the game and longtime service to the community. His family will join the festivities in Cleveland, where he began his big league career with the Indians.

Sabathia, pitching on 11 days' rest and looking for his 252nd win, has a contentious history with Tampa Bay. AL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell (5-7, 4.87) goes for the second-place Rays, who are 8+ games behind New York in the AL East. Snell gave up six runs and got only one out June 19 at Yankee Stadium.

          • Weekend Watch
            Joe Williams

            Saturday, July 6

The Battle of Chicago is back underway, this time on the south side, as the Cubs and White Sox renew acquaintances. It's a strong pitching matchup, too, as LHP Jon Lester and All-Star RHP Lucas Giolito lock horns at Guaranteed Rate Field. These teams split a mini two-game set at Wrigley Field on June 18-19, and the ChiSox actually outscored the Cubs 8-6, including 7-3 in the victory by Giolito over Lester in the first matchup.

The Cubs have dropped four of the past five, and they're also 1-4 in the past five against teams with a losing record, 1-4 in the past five road games against right-handed starting pitchers and 1-4 in the past five on the road, too. The Cubs are also 4-9 in the past 13 interleague battles vs. RHP and 5-13 in the past 18 road outings against a team with a winning home record. They're also 0-4 in the past four road outings, although the Cubs are 29-8 in the past 37 in Game 1 of a new series and 33-16 in his past 49 starts overall.

The White Sox are 5-0 in the past five following a day off, while going 4-1 in their past five vs. LHP and 5-2 in the past seven overall. They're also 13-6 in the past 19 home outings, too. In addition, the White Sox are 10-2 in Giolito's past 12 starts while going 6-0 in the past six home outings. However, Chicago is also just 2-5 in Giolito's past seven interleague outings, while going 3-8 in the past 11 home outings against teams with a winning overall record. In the past 11 meetings, the Cubs have won eight times, and the Cubs are 4-1 in the past five at Guaranteed Rate Field and 4-0 in his past four against the ChiSox overall. The over is 3-1-1 in Lester's past five against the White Sox, too.

The Padres picked up a 3-2 win on Friday night at Dodger Stadium, which briefly felt the effects of a 7.1-magnitude earthquake centered around Ridgecrest, Calif. RHP Chris Paddack and RHP Kenta Maeda will square off in Game 3. The Padres are still just 1-5 over the past six outings, and 1-4 in their past five inside the division. The Padres are 0-4 in the past four vs. RHP and 1-4 in Paddack's past five outings. The Dodgers are 6-1 across Maeda's past seven outings at home, while going 8-3 in his past 11 in Game 3 of a series. Despite Friday's win, the Padres are still just 16-38 in the past 54 in this series, and 14-41 in the past 55 at Dodger Stadium. The over is 5-2-1 in Maeda's past eight outings against San Diego, too.

            Weather Report
Saturday's game between the Brewers and Pirates will fact a 40 percent or greater chance of precipitation on Saturday, and it isn't expected to let up through the evening hours. Since they're divisional rivals and they play frequently, if the rains are too much, expect this game to be rescheduled as part of a day-night doubleheader later.

Winds will be a factor for the Red Sox-Tigers battle at Comerica, gusting 9-12 mph out to the right-center field power alley. That pales in comparison to the 14-17 mph gusts to right field for the Cubs-White Sox tilt on the south side.

            Sunday, July 7

It's the last official day of the first half before the All-Star break. Indians RHP Trevor Bauer amd RHP Tyler Mahle square off at Great American Ball Park in afternoon action. The Indians are a perfect 5-0 over Bauer's past five outings, including a no-decision by Bauer in a 2-1 win at Progressive Field on June 11. He allowed one earned run, six hits and five walks with six strikeouts over 7 2/3 innings in that one. He has actually been way more effective on the road, going 5-2 with a 2.56 ERA over 63 1/3 innings on the road, as opposed to 2-4 with a 4.96 ERA across 61 2/3 innings at home. Also, he has a 1.74 ERA in 41 1/3 innings during daytime starts vs. a 4.73 ERA in 82 2/3 innings at night. The Reds are 4-17 across Mahle's past 21 outings and 2-9 in his past 11 against winning teams.

RHP Jack Flaherty and RHP Jeff Samardzija tangle at Oracle Park in San Francisco. The Cardinals crowded the Giants in Friday's game by a 9-4 score for their third straight victory. While the Cards are 4-1 in the past five overall and 4-1 in the past five road outings, they're just 3-9 in Flaherty's past 12 road outings and 1-4 in his past five starts overall. The Giants are in similar shape, going 4-1 in the past five overall, but just 3-7 in Samardzija's past 10 outings, 0-5 in his past five at home and 0-4 in his past four at home against winning teams.

With the All-Star break starting in Cleveland on Monday, there is no Sunday night game. The Rockies and Diamondbacks are one of the final games of the first half, as RHP German Marquez takes the ball to face LHP Alex Young and the Snakes at Chase Field. Colorado has won six straight starts by Marquez in Game 3 of a series, and they're 7-0 in his past seven against losing teams. They're also 11-5 in his past 16 starts overall, and 13-3 in his past 16 when working on three days of rest. The Diamondbacks have gotten decent pitching from Young in his two appearances, one start and one in relief. Weather Report
On Sunday, wind will be the story for the Cubs-White Sox again. This time winds will be blowing from third to first base across the diamond at a 12-15 mph clip. The rest of the MLB slate looks to be free and clear of precip or game-changing winds.

Weather Report for Monday, July 8 and Tuesday, July 9
On Monday, the forecast calls for light winds out of the ENE at 6-9 mph with temperatures in the low 70's with no precipitation expected for the Home Run Derby.

For Tuesday, temperatures will be in the upper 70's with a slightly breeze at 7-10 mph. Precip chances again will be slim to none, so the mid-summer classic in Cleveland should go off without a hitch.

                              STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                              STREAKING

Andrew Cashner, Baltimore Orioles (8-3, 4.03 ERA, $1064):
Cashner has been cashing in for Orioles bettors. While Baltimore is terrible they've actually had a puncher's chance of winning when Cashner steps on the mound, going 5-1 over his last six starts. Over his last four starts Cashner is 2-1 with a 1.44 ERA and 0.80 WHIP.

Today, Cashner and Orioles are +130 underdogs against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Jays are just 5-11 over their previous 16 games at home and will start Clayton Richard who is 1-4 with a 6.51 ERA. With Toronto batting just .221 at home the Orioles could be a smart underdog play.

                              SLUMPING

Jake Arrieta, Philadelphia Phillies (8-6, 4.43 ERA, $209):
Don't let the 3-2 record over his last six starts fool you, Arrieta has been bad. During that span he has a 6.15 ERA and 1.66 WHIP, while giving up nine home runs.

The Phillies lock horns with the Mets today. Arrieta pitched against the Mets two weeks ago and gave up five runs and a pair of homers in six innings. The Phillies are +132 underdogs on the road.

                              • THREE STRIKES

                                MAD MAX

Max Scherzer could have been our streaking pitcher for the day but we figured we'd give someone else a chance. Scherzer, on the other hand, hasn't been giving opposing batters much of a chance lately, going 6-0 with a ridiculous 0.94 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 83 strikouts in 57 innings over his last eight starts.

The Nationals are whopping -435 favorites at home against the Kansas City Royals and starter Glenn Sparkman who is 2-4 with a 5.09 ERA. If you want to back Scherzer for a better payout the Over 9.5 on his strikeout total might do the trick at -140. Mad Max has struck out at least 10 batters in five of his last six starts.

HOME IS WHERE THE HURT IS

T-Mobile Park in Seattle is supposed to be pitcher-friendly but it certainly hasn't been for today's Mariners starter Marco Gonzales. The lefty has gone 4-4 with an ERA of 6.00, WHIP of 1.52 and BAA of .303 at home this season.

The Mariners host the Athletics who are 4-1 in pitcher Chris Bassitt's last five starts on the road. While Gonzales has gone 2-0 against the A's in Oakland this year, you might be better off fading him at home tonight. The Mariners are +120 underdogs with the O/U installed at 9.5.

                                HERE'S JONNY!

The Rockies are +102 underdogs tonight in Arizona. It's been the Rockies batters that have gotten all the attention this year but pitcher Jon Gray is quietly putting together a nice season as well. The Rockies have gone 7-1 in Gray's last eight starts and over his last three starts he's gone 3-0 with a 1.45 ERA (with one of those starts coming in Arizona).

The D-Backs have gone 0-4 in Robbie Ray's last four starts and the right-hander has an ERA of 6.05 while giving up seven homers in 22 1-3 innings during that stretch. The Rockies are 6-1 in their last seven games in Arizona and 18-5 in the last 23 games of the head-to-head.
