              STREAKING/SLUMPING STARTERS

              STREAKING

Max Scherzer, Washington Nationals (7-5, 2.52 ERA, $-990):
Ignore the money pit he's been this season, that's mostly due to a lack of run support and a terrible Nationals bullpen for the first two months of the season. There's a reason this guy is considered a future Hall of Famer: he's pretty good.

Even for his lofty standards Scherzer has been exceptional lately, going 5-0 in his last seven starts with a 0.92 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 69 strikeouts over 49 innings.

Today Scherzer and the Nationals will take on a Detroit Tigers team that is last in the majors with 3.42 runs per game and has a BA of .229. Detroit is just 14-37 in their last 51 home games and will start Jordan Zimmerman who is winless through eight starts this year. The Nats are huge -320 faves for this matchup.

              SLUMPING

Blake Snell, Tampa Bay Rays (4-7, 5.01 ERA, $-844 ):
Coming off a Cy Young Award-winning season, the 26-year-old was supposed to be the next big thing but he's plummeted back to earth with a rocky season.

Over his last two starts Snell has given up a whopping 13 runs in under four innings of work. Over his previous five starts he has an ERA of 11.94 and a WHIP of 2.42.

Snell and the Rays will host the Texas Rangers as -200 favorites. The Rangers will give the ball to Jesse Chavez who has allowed just one run over 14 1-3 innings in his last three appearances.

With Tampa Bay 0-6 in their last six games following a victory and the Rangers 6-1 over their previous seven games the underdog might be worth a look. And with Snell still getting respect from oddsmakers with an O/U of 8 the Over has good value as well.

              3 STRIKES

              RED SKY IN THE MORNING

The Chicago Cubs are -132 faves on the road in Cincinnati but there are some signs that Cubs bettors might want to take warning. The Cubs will start Jon Lester who is 2-3 with with a 5.82 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and .281 BAA in away games.

Chicago is 3-9 in their last 12 games on the road while the Reds are 5-1 in their previous six at home. The Reds are also 7-2 over the last nine meetings with the Cubs in Cincy.

              GO WEST, YOUNG MAN

Umpire Joe West will be calling strikes for today's matchup between Cleveland and Baltimore. Despite being two of the worst hitting teams in the majors, the O/U for this game opened at 10.5. The Under has cashed in 11 of his 15 games behind home plate this year and he has called strikes at a rate of 63.4 percent.

The Tribe will start Shane Bieber who is 6-3 with a 3.83 ERA and 1.10 WHIP. The Under is 12-4 in Bieber's last 16 starts and is 12-4-1 in the last 17 meetings between these teams in Baltimore.

RAY OF SUNSHINE IN SAN FRANCISCO

The Diamondbacks opened as small underdogs on the road against the Giants but are now small faves at -120. The D-Backs will give the ball to southpaw Robbie Ray (5-5, 3.90 ERA) while the Giants will go with Madison Bumgarner (4-7, 4.21 ERA).

Since 2016 Ray has started six games at Oracle Park (formerly called AT&T Park) and has gone 4-1 with a 2.34 ERA. The Giants are dead-last in the majors in BA at .224, and are even worse against lefties hitting .218 with a slugging percentage of .332. Little surprise that they are 8-20 in their last 28 games versus a left-handed starter.

With the Diamondbacks 6-1 over their last seven games in San Fran they look like a solid play today.

                    • Comeback lifts Yanks to London sweep of Red Sox
                      June 30, 2019
                      By The Associated Press

LONDON (AP) Gary Sanchez hit a go-ahead, two-run single during a nine-run seventh inning, and the New York Yankees overcame a four-run deficit to beat the Boston Red Sox 12-8 Sunday for a two-game sweep of the groundbreaking, high-scoring trip across the pond.

DJ LeMahieu doubled off Marcus Walden (6-1) leading off the seventh and hit a two-run double against Josh Taylor later in the inning as the Yankees opened an 11-4 lead, sending 14 batters to the plate in their highest-scoring inning in four years.

Didi Gregorius went deep against Ryan Brasier in the eighth, extending New York's record streak of games with home runs to 31. Combined with the Yankees' 17-13 win Saturday, the teams scored 50 runs on the weekend, four more than their previous scoring mark in consecutive games against each other.

Adam Ottavino (3-2), the second of six New York relievers, got the win.

Before a sellout crowd of 59,059 at Olympic Stadium, Xander Bogaerts, J.D. Martinez and Christian Vazquez became the first trio of Boston batters in four decades to hit home runs in the first inning.

                      RAYS 6, RANGERS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Blake Snell struck out 12 over six innings for just his second win in 10 starts and Tampa Bay beat Texas.

Snell (5-7) gave up three hits during an 80-pitch outing. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner had an 11.94 ERA in five previous starts this month.

Tommy Pham homered for the Rays, who won consecutive games for the first time since June 9-10. The first AL wild card leaders went 13-16 in June.

After Kevin Kiermaier had an RBI single and Willy Adames added a run-scoring single off Jesse Chavez (3-3) the fourth, Pham's fifth-inning solo shot made it 4-2.

                      ASTROS 6, MARINERS 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Rookie Yordan Alvarez drove in three to back up seven strong innings by Gerrit Cole and help Houston over Seattle to complete a three-game sweep.

Cole (8-5), who allowed just four singles after a solo homer to J.P. Crawford, struck out 10 and walked one to win his fourth straight decision. Cole leads the American League with 151 strikeouts this season.

Mariners starter Marco Gonzales (9-7) allowed six hits and three runs while walking three in five innings to snap a four-game winning streak in his first loss since June 2.

After consecutive one-run wins in the 10th inning, the Astros didn't need any late dramatics in this one. They padded the lead with a three-run eighth inning highlighted by a two-RBI single by Jake Marisnick.

                      WHITE SOX 4, TWINS 3

CHICAGO (AP) - First-time All-Star Lucas Giolito (11-2) allowed one hit in five innings to earn his major league-leading 11th victory and Chicago beat Minnesota.

Yoan Moncada homered, and he and Jose Abreu had three hits apiece for the White Sox, who won two of three against the AL Central-leading Twins.

Nelson Cruz homered for the Twins, who had won eight of nine against Chicago.

Lewis Thorpe (0-1), a 23-year-old left-hander from Melbourne, Australia, made his major league debut for the Twins. He allowed two runs and five hits, struck out seven and walked two in five innings.

                      DODGERS 10, ROCKIES 5

DENVER (AP) - Joc Pederson had three hits and three RBIs, Matt Beaty doubled twice and drove in two, and Los Angeles rallied past Colorado to split their four-game series.

Kenta Maeda pitched into the fifth but didn't figure in the decision. He had a hand in the Dodgers' first two runs, though, singling and scoring in the third and laying down a sacrifice bunt that helped bring Kike Hernandez home in the fifth.

Dylan Floro (3-2) got two outs to pick up the win and Julio Urias helped keep the Rockies in check with three scoreless innings in relief.

Chad Bettis (1-4) was charged with six runs while getting one out.

                      NATIONALS 2, TIGERS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Max Scherzer struck out 14 against his former team and Anthony Rendon homered for the second straight game as Washington topped Detroit.

Scherzer (8-5) returned to Comerica Park for the first time since leaving as a free agent after the 2014 season and stuck out double-digit batters for the fourth straight outing.

Rendon's blast came off Joe Jimenez (2-6), who allowed a home run and a walk to the only two batters he faced.

Detroit's Jordan Zimmermann, who also was starting against his former team, struck out four batters in six innings, allowing one run.

                      BREWERS 2, PIRATES 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Eric Thames homered leading off the eighth inning, and Milwaukee beat Pittsburgh.

Thames, who entered as a pinch-hitter in the sixth, blasted an 0-1 pitch from Pirates reliever Kyle Crick (3-4) to straightaway center, a 432-foot shot that hit just below the scoreboard.

Milwaukee took two of three from its NL Central rival and moved into a first-place tie with the Chicago Cubs, who lost to Cincinnati. The Brewers finished their homestand at 5-5.

Jeremy Jeffress (2-2) pitched a scoreless eighth, and Matt Albers worked the ninth to pick up his first save of the season.

                      REDS 8, CUBS 6

CINCINNATI (AP) - Eugenio Suarez ended his slump with Cincinnati's longest homer of the season, Anthony DeSclafani (5-4) pitched six scoreless innings and the Reds held off Chicago.

Phillip Ervin and Nick Senzel drove in two runs each, and Raisel Iglesias escaped with a six-out save despite allowing Jason Heyward's three-run homer in the ninth. Kyle Schwarber also had a late connection for the Cubs.

Chicago starter Jon Lester (7-6) hadn't lost to the Reds since 2016, a streak of seven straight starts. The Cubs have dropped 3 of 4 and finished June 14-15, their first losing month since May 2017.

Yasiel Puig stole two bases a day after a shouting match with Chicago reliever Pedro Strop - Puig was upset after being hit by a 3-0 pitch.

                      INDIANS 2, ORIOLES 0

BALTIMORE (AP) - Shane Bieber allowed three hits and struck out 11 over eight dazzling innings, Carlos Santana drove in two and Cleveland edged Baltimore to avert a three-game sweep.

Coming off successive 13-0 losses to the team with the worst record in the majors, the Indians turned it around behind Bieber (7-3). The left-hander did not issue a walk, retired 12 straight at one point and permitted only one runner past first base.

Brad Hand gave up two singles and a two-out walk to load the bases in the ninth before striking out Anthony Santander for his 23rd save. He was named an All-Star after the game.

Orioles starter Gabriel Ynoa (0-6) gave up one run and six hits over 5 1/3 innings. Three of those hits came in the third, when the Mercado-Santana combination clicked to end the Indians' run of scoreless innings at 20.

                      ATHLETICS 12, ANGELS 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Matt Chapman hit a three-run homer, a triple and a three-run double on the day he was named to his first All-Star team, and Oakland beat Los Angeles to take three of four from its AL West rival.

Chapman racked up a career-high six RBIs starting with his 21st homer in the fifth inning, shortly before he learned of his selection to the midseason showcase in Cleveland.

Shohei Ohtani hit two homers for the Angels, who wrapped up their final homestand before the All-Star break by losing three straight at home to a team they're chasing in the division standings.

Andrew Heaney (1-2) yielded five runs over six innings of six-hit ball for the Angels, giving up Chapman's big shot after a mound visit in the fifth. Chris Bassitt (5-3) pitched five-hit ball into the sixth inning for Oakland.

                      CARDINALS 5, PADRES 3, 11 INNINGS

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Matt Wieters hit a two-run homer with two outs in the 11th inning, and St. Louis overcame a three-run deficit to beat San Diego and snap a five-game losing streak.

Wieters' shot off Brad Wieck (0-1) reached the balcony on the fourth level of the Western Metal Supply Co. Building in the left-field corner. It was his fourth and came with Kolten Wong aboard on an infield single.

Manny Machado hit a two-run home run in the fourth, giving the Padres three players with at least 20, and Eric Hosmer had three hits. San Diego had its four-game winning streak snapped.

Carlos Martinez (2-0) pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief for the win and Dominic Leone got the final two outs for his first save.

MIAMI (AP) - Bryce Harper homered and drove in four to help Philadelphia end a streak of five consecutive losses to last-place Miami.

Harper hit run-scoring singles in the first and sixth innings and a two-run homer in the eighth, his 15th. That gave him 199 career homers and 999 hits, and increased his average to .250.

Jake Arrieta (8-6) allowed four runs in six innings but contributed a two-run single. Jean Segura and Cesar Hernandez each had three of the Phillies' 17 hits and scored twice, and Brad Miller hit his third homer and singled in a run.

Miami catcher Jorge Alfaro hit two-run homer with a bloody nose following collision in the sixth. Trevor Richards (3-9) allowed three runs in five innings.

Justin Smoak homered twice for the Blue Jays but ended the game by fouling out against right-hander Ian Kennedy in the ninth, stranding the tying run at second base.

Whit Merrifield reached base three times and Alex Gordon drove in a pair as Kansas City answered Toronto's five-run second inning with a five-run third against struggling Blue Jays right-hander Aaron Sanchez (3-11).

                      GIANTS 10, DIAMONDBACKS 4

Bumgarner (5-7) gave up one run on four hits. He struck out nine and walked none. Pillar put the Giants ahead in the bottom of the second with a two-run homer off Robbie Ray (5-6).

                          **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Happy Canada Day, everyone……

                          13) On Thursday, Nate Lashley was the #353 golfer in the world rankings; he was the last guy in the field in Detroit this week. Then he shot 25-under for the week and won $1,314,000 and a two-year exemption on Tour. Pretty good week.

In 2004, Lashley lost his parents and girlfriend in a plane crash; seven years later, he almost quit golf to become a real estate agent. The guy deserves some good stuff to happen.

                          12) Brooklyn Nets made the biggest splash in NBA free agency, throwing $164M at Kevin Durant, plus signing Kyrie Irving and DeAndre Jordan.

Durant has a torn achilles and is over 30; no guarantees they won’t look foolish pretty soon.

                          11) Knicks didn’t offer Durant a max contract, which actually makes sense; its the Knicks doing a sensible thing that doesn’t make sense.

                          10) Darren Collison has earned $43,343,141 in his NBA career, playing for five different teams in nine years, but he suddenly retired this week at age 31, citing religious reasons. He would’ve probably earned a contract of $10-12M for this season.

                          9) 76ers lost Jimmy Butler to Miami, JJ Redick to New Orleans, then gave Tobias Harris $180M over five years, which is astounding. Harris’ agent must still be drinking champagne.

                          8) Minnesota Twins are 53-30, have two All-Stars.

New York Mets are 38-47, have three All-Stars. Go figure.

                          7) Baseball stuff:
                          — Oakland put OF Stephen Piscotty (knee) on the IL.
                          — Braves put P Anthony Swarzak (shoulder) on the IL.

                          6) This is when you know a fan base is 100% spoiled: Red Sox’ GM Dave Dombrowski was getting roasted pretty good this weekend on social media, thanks to the failure of the Boston bullpen this season.

Red Sox made the playoffs last three years, won 108 games and World Series LY, you might want to take a deep breath and appreciate the four World Series you’ve won since 2004.

                          5) Biggest differential, NL home vs. road ERA

                          1. Dodgers 1.72 lower at home

                          2. Padres 1.55

                          4) Seattle Mariners got only one All-Star; Daniel Vogelbach over Domingo Santana is an odd choice, seeing how Santana has 14 more RBI and 28 more hits; Vogelbach has 22 more walks.

                          3) Neither Bryce Harper or Manny Machado is an All-Star, except on payday.

                          2) There are 31 first-time All-Stars, the most since 2016.

                          1) Happy Canada Day to our neighbors to the north.

                          • Ballpark Figures - Week 15
                            Joe Williams

                            Canada Day

The Kansas City Royals and Toronto Blue Blues Jays square off in an afternoon game on Monday on Canada Day, the equivalent of July 4 in the United States. It's a battle between RHP Glenn Sparkman and LHP Clayton Richard, so the runs could be plentiful at Rogers Centre on the holiday.

Kansas City limps in with 20 wins over the past 69 on the road, but they're 4-1 in the past five road outings against a left-handed starting pitcher. However, they're just 2-11 in the past 13 games on astroturf, and 1-5 in the past six in Game 4 of a series. They're also 15-39 in the past 54 games inside the American League East. While they've had some success lately against southpaws, remember they're also 17-35 across the past 52 vs. LHP.

Toronto looks to rebound after losing Sunday's game. They're 3-8 across the past 11 games at home, while going 17-39 in the past 56 games overall. The Jays are also a dismal 17-35 in the past 52 games against a right-handed starting pitcher, and 2-9 in the previous 11 against RHP at home. Both teams have had a case of the Mondays, too. Kansas City is 6-22 in the past 28 games played on a Monday, while the Jays are a rough 3-13 in their past 16 on Monday.

As far as the total is concerned, the over is 7-3-1 in the past 11 games on the road, and 5-0 in the past five vs. LHP. They're also 6-2-1 in the past nine against American League East foes. The Jays have hit the over in four of their past five home outings, and 7-2 in the past nine vs. RHP. The over is also 13-4-1 in the past 18 games overall, while also going 4-1-1 in the past six meetings in Toronto.

                            Looking Ahead

                            Monday, July 1

There are just five evening games on Monday, but all of them are divisional battles.

The Cubs are 3-10 in the past 13 games on the road, and 3-9 in the past 12 on the road vs. RHP. The Pirates have won four home games in a row, and seven of the past 10 overall. They're also 4-0 in the past four at home vs. RHP. In this series, the Cubs have won four of the past five, while the under is 9-2 in the past 11 meetings, including 4-0 in the past four in Pittsburgh. The under is also 5-0 in Trevor Williams' past five outings against the Cubs.

The Brewers have won four of the past five inside the division, but they're 1-5 in the past six on the road. The Reds have won six of the past seven at home, and they're 8-3 in the past 11 against teams with a winning overall mark. However, they're also 2-8 in RHP Tyler Mahle's past 10 starts against winning teams, and 5-16 in his past 21 outings overall.

The Orioles have managed to win just 20 of their past 81 on the road, and they're a dismal 5-23 in the past 28 on astrotruf. The Rays have enjoyed playing on Mondays, going 22-5 in the past 27 on the day. RHP Ryne Stanek is the opener, and Tampa Bay is 19-7 in his past 26 starts at home, and 21-9 in his past 30 overall. The O's are 3-14 in their past 17 trips to St. Pete, and 2-7 in the past nine meetings overall. The over is 10-4 in the past 14 meetings, 7-1 in the past eight in St. Pete and 4-0 in Stanek's past four starts against the O's.

The Angels travel to meet the Rangers, and they're just 14-38 in the past 52 road games against winning teams, and 1-4 in the past five inside the division. Texas is 7-1 in the past eight at home vs. LHP, while going 5-0 in the past five starts by All-Star LHP Mike Minor. They're also 5-2 in his past seven starts overall at home. The Halos have won just once in the past five in Arlington, too. The under is 20-7 in the past 27 meetings, 5-2 in the past seven in Arlington and 4-0 in Minor's past four vs. LAA.

The Giants have won just two of the past nine starts by RHP Jeff Samardzija. They're also 5-11 in his past 16 on the road, and 6-20 in his last 26 against teams with a winning overall mark. San Francisco is also 1-4 in the past five vs. LHP, and 0-4 in the past four at home against southpaws. San Diego has won four of the past five overall, and five of the past six at home. They're also 4-1 in the past five at home against San Francisco. In this series, the under is 4-0 in the past four meetings in San Diego, and 7-3 in the past 10 meetings overall.

                            Weather Report
There are only four outdoor games on Monday, and only the Angels and Rangers will be affected by the elements. They'll be facing a stiff 10-13 mph wind blowing in from right field to home plate.

                            Tuesday, July 2

The Red Sox use LHP David Price against the Blue Jays, a team which has been brutal against southpaws. Boston has won 14 of the past 17 starts by Price against teams with a losing overall mark, and they're 30-12 across his past 42 starts overall. The Blue Jays have won just two of the past seven starts by RHP Trent Thornton, and they're 2-5 in his past seven at home, too. In addition, Toronto is just 3-8 in the past 11 at home, 8-22 in the past 30 against winning teams and 20-48 in the past 68 against left-handed starting pitchers. In this series the Red Sox are a perfect 5-0 in Price's past five against the Jays, while going 20-6 in the past 26 at Rogers Centre.

The New York Yankees and New York Mets renew acquaintances in their interleague rivalry, this time at Citi Field in Queens. The Yankees, fresh off an offensive show in London in their two-game sweep of the Red Sox, use LHP James Paxton against RHP Zack Wheeler of the Mets. The Yankees are 4-0 in their past four road games, and 23-7 in the past 30 against losing teams. They're also 37-14 in the past 51 against teams with a right-handed starting pitcher. They're 8-2 in Paxton's past 10 starts overall, too. The Mets have lost seven of the past eight games overall, and they're 2-5 in the past seven at home. They're 4-0 in Wheeler's past four home outings, but just 1-4 in his past five against winning teams.

The Cardinals and Mariners kick off an interleague series on Tuesday night at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. RHP Jack Flaherty takes the ball for the Cards, while RHP Matt Carasiti is the opener, with LHP Wade LeBlanc to follow. St. Louis has won just one of the past six, and they're 2-5 in Flaherty's past seven starts overall. They're also 3-8 in his past 11 road outings, and 1-5 in his past six interleague starts. The Mariners are 4-1 in the past five outings at home, but just 19-40 in the past 59 games overall. They're also 0-5 in the past five interleague home outings, and 7-19 in the past 26 interleague battles.

                            Weather Report
The Angels and Rangers will again be the first trouble spot of Tuesday's slate. They're again face a stiff 11-14 mph wind blowing in from right field into the face of the batters. It's the opposite for the Astros and Rockies, as they face a 10-13 mph wind blowing out to the left-center field power alley for their interleague series opener. The Twins and Athletics face a 9-12 mph wind blowing out to straightaway center field in Oakland. The good news is that there is no precipitation in the forecast.

                            • Max Scherzer and the best (and worst) MLB pitchers to bet on in July
                              Marc Lawrence

Washington pitcher Max Scherzer is one of the top pitchers in the business and has a habit of throwing the ball exceptionally well during the month of July.

Independence Day Fireworks and the MLB All-Star game always go hand-in-hand during the month of July. It also signals the start of the second half of the MLB campaign. And as we’ve come to learn, the key to every team’s fortune lies with the pitching staff.

Can these pitchers sew up critical wins or will they unravel like a Salvation Army suit? Stay tuned. What we do know is that certain pitchers love hurling this time of the season while others tend to get lit up like a roman candle.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of July. On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in July, winning 33% percent or less of their team-start efforts.

To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each July over the last three years. And for your convenience alongside each record, we break down each pitcher’s greatest success, or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher (none this month), maintaining status quo from last season’s July list.

                              GOOD MONTH PITCHERS

                              Boyd, Matthew • Detroit Tigers • 8-4 (5-1 A)

The emerging ace was rumored to be in trade talks with the New York Yankees, but it appeared Detroit’s asking price was too high. He was on a 6-2 dog run until a recent 0-5 effort since mid-May reared its head. Boyd is distantly related to Hall Of Fame hurler Bob Feller.

                              Carrasco, Carlos • Cleveland Indians • 10-4 (5-2 A)

Out with a blood condition, no timetable for his return.

                              Chacin, Jhoulys • Milwaukee Brewers • 9-2 (5-0 H)

Chacin is having a very difficult season at 3-8 with a 5.60 ERA. His inability to spot pitches has really hurt him, allowing more walks and home runs after last year's 15-8 campaign. Let's see if July perks him up.

                              Cole, Gerrit • Houston Astros • 9-4 (5-2 A)

Cole is having a very good year with only one issue, but it still counts. Opposing batters are hitting just .211 against him, compared to .240 lifetime. His ERA is very close to his career norm of 3.38, but like most pitchers this season he's been plagued by the long ball, with 16 allowed after permitting 19 in all of 2018.

                              Hendricks, Kyle • Chicago Cubs • 8-4 (5-2 H)

Currently on the DL with a shoulder impingement, and Cubs officials have stated they will take their time to get Hendricks 100 percent healthy.

                              Hill, Rich • Los Angeles Dodgers • 9-3 (5-1 A)

This dude is 39 years old and a little crazy but is super effective. Nobody we've seen in recent years swears as much out loud as Hill, as you don't even have to be a lip reader to see that. However, the left-hander is ultra-competitive and has more variations of the curveball than an out of town salesman has singles going to a strip club. Unfortunately, Hill has a strained flexor tendon in his forearm and probably won't pitch this month.

                              Paxton, James • New York Yankees • 10-5 (6-2 A)

Because the Yankees have played so well, Paxton having an ERA a run higher than his career norm has been overlooked. He's catching too much of the plate and surrendering too many base-knocks. His worst outings are easy to tell, as his fly ball to groundball ratio is at least 2-to-1. Manager Aaron Boone is looking for a turn around in July.

                              Quintana, Jose • Chicago Cubs • 11-3 (6-0 A)

Quintana's been in a major slump and the Cubs really need him to come out of it. Almost nothing has worked for the 30-year of late and you can tell by his body language that if he allows a hit or a walk to start an inning, trouble is brewing. His inability to work inside, up and down the strike zone is hurting him.

                              Scherzer, Max • Washington Nationals • 11-4 (8-1 A)

Mad Max – the best hurler in MLB - is a regular on our monthly charts and he's back to mowing down batters after a sluggish start. Always known for great control and striking out hitters, Scherzer is at nearly an insane 8-to-1 for strikeouts to walks this season. Warning label: This guy is hotter than a firecracker!

                              Wacha, Michael • St. Louis Cardinals • 7-3 (5-1 H)

Its clear Wacha is not right this season, battling an assortment of injuries, all of which are all contributing to lackluster results so far. It's hard to determine when and if he will feel as close to 100 percent as possible, but maybe the heat of July will loosen everything up.

                              BAD MONTH PITCHERS

                              Bumgarner, Madison • San Francisco Giants • 4-10 (0-6 A)

Mad Bum has been an elite pitcher for a long time, but did you realize he's not had a winning season since 2016? Granted, the Giants are not close to their championship ways in the first part of this decade, but shouldn't he have a better record than 14-23 the last three years? Could be more of the same this month.

                              Leake, Mike • Seattle Mariners • 5-10 (2-5 H)

Mike Leake was never a great pitcher, as his 100-94 career record proves. At 31, he's lost something off the fastball and his breaking pitches no longer have the same bite. At this juncture, he's a back of the rotation hurler on a losing team, just like the one he's on in Seattle.

                              Matz, Steven • New York Mets • 4-12 (1-6 H)

The lefthander has never quite figured it out. At times Matz has looked devastating for innings at a time, then, he allows four or five runs and is yanked out of the game. In his five years with the Mets, he's given up better than a hit an inning and that is no recipe for success. Expect the negative numbers to continue.

                              Ray, Robbie • Arizona • 3-12 (1-7 A)

A super talented lefty who's never solved the mental part of the game. Ray averages 1.2 strikeouts an inning, which is high-level stuff for a starter. His problem is he can be sailing along for five or six innings, then, two walks, a single and home run allowed and suddenly Ray's given up a four-spot just like that. Focus has always been his undoing, particularly in July it seems.

                              Samardzija, Jeff • San Francisco Giants • 3-9 (1-4 A)

Samardzija's main attribute is that he's gotten paid along the way to still be pitching at 34 and making close to 20 million a year, despite having a 73-99 career record. Obviously, he's had a great agent. Samards use to have a decent sinker/slider mix, but at his current age, the velocity has dropped and too often he's tossing slop, while just trying to miss bats, without a great deal of success.

                              Teheran, Julio • Atlanta Braves • 5-10 (2-6 A)

Once thought of as an ace, the 28-year is just another pitcher who makes mistakes at the most critical times, which causes him and Atlanta to lose. His .225 batting average allowed this season is below what he's done in the past (.235), but too much nibbling has led to too many free passes and ultimately Teheran gets burned.
