Hottest team: Yankees (5-0 last five)

New York remained atop the AL East following an impressive home sweep of Tampa Bay at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees’ staff yielded a total of four runs in the three victories, while jumping on Cy Young winner Blake Snell for six runs in the first inning of Wednesday’s 12-1 rout as a short underdog. Since losing three straight games to the Mets and White Sox in which the Yankees were tagged for 25 runs, the pitching staff has rebounded by allowing 11 runs in the past five wins.

The Yankees will be tested tonight by the team with the top record in the American League. The Astros sit in first place of the AL West at 48-27 in spite of suffering a three-game sweep at Cincinnati. New York dropped all three games at Minute Maid Park back in April, as the Yankees will go with a bullpen-by-committee approach in the series opener. Chad Green takes the mound for likely the first two innings as the right-hander has tossed two innings in his past two starts, while striking out six batters in Chicago last Saturday in an 8-4 victory over the White Sox.

Coldest team: Brewers (1-5 last six)

Milwaukee returns to Miller Park after a miserable end to its eight-game road trip. Following an exciting 14-inning triumph at Houston to pick up a split with the Astros, the Brewers dropped two of three at San Francisco and lost all three at San Diego. Starting pitching was an issue for Milwaukee on this away swing as four of the final five starters didn’t escape the fifth inning.

The Brewers will try to turn things around against the suddenly-hot Reds, who just swept the Astros at home. Right-hander Jimmy Nelson gets the ball tonight, trying to rebound from a pair of tough starts against Miami and San Francisco. Nelson allowed four runs in each of those outings, while failing to hold a 5-1 lead in an 8-7 setback to the Giants last Saturday. The only piece of good news for Milwaukee is the Brewers have won four of five games against the Reds this season.

Hottest pitcher: Jake Odorizzi, Twins (10-2, 2.24 ERA)

Minnesota lost each of Odorizzi’s first three starts this season, which included him getting racked by the Phillies in less than one inning of work. Odorizzi has been one of the top pitchers in the American League since that rough start as the Twins have won each of the right-hander’s last 11 outings, which includes six scoreless performances. The most runs Odorizzi has allowed in this hot stretch came in his most recent trip to the mound against the Royals last Saturday when he yielded four runs in a 5-4 victory as a -245 favorite. Minnesota is 5-0 in Odorizzi’s last five road starts, while the Twins have beaten the Royals in four of five meetings in 2019.

Coldest pitcher: Clayton Richard, Blue Jays (0-3, 7.52 ERA)

It’s been a rough series for Toronto pitching, as the Blue Jays have allowed double-digit runs twice, including 11 in last night’s five-run defeat. The Blue Jays try to avoid the four-game sweep tonight as Richard seeks his first win in a Toronto uniform. Richard has lasted past the fourth inning only once in five starts, while getting lit up for 12 runs in his past two outings against the Diamondbacks and Astros. The run support hasn’t been there for the southpaw, as the Jays have scored two runs or fewer in four of Richard’s five appearances.

Biggest OVER run: Mariners (9-1-1 last 11)

It’s a battle of last-place squads in the Pacific Northwest tonight as Seattle tries to build off a blowout win over Kansas City on Thursday. When Seattle wins, its offense has shown signs of life by posting scoring six runs or more in its past seven victories. The Mariners rolled past the Royals, 8-2 last night but Seattle has given up six or more runs in in each of their last eight losses. Seattle welcomes in Baltimore tonight, who has lost eight consecutive games, as the Orioles have scored three runs or fewer in six of their past seven defeats.

Biggest UNDER run: Reds (14-1 last 15)

Cincinnati’s pitching staff put together a terrific effort in a three-game sweep of Houston by allowing a total seven runs. The Reds won each game by one run apiece, as the offense only put up 10 runs while facing Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole in the final two wins. For the exception of allowing seven runs to the Rangers last Friday, the Reds have yielded four runs or fewer in 13 of the past 14 contests. Cincinnati travels to Milwaukee as the Reds are 6-1 to the UNDER in their last seven road series openers.

Matchup to watch: Giants vs. Dodgers

San Francisco and Los Angeles wrap up their four-game series tonight at Dodger Stadium as the two rivals won’t hook up again until September. The Giants won the opener as a +220 underdog on Monday, 3-2, but the Dodgers have dominated San Francisco the last two nights with a 9-2 and 9-0 blowouts. The storyline headed into tonight’s finale revolves around the matchup between Giants’ southpaw Madison Bumgarner and Dodgers’ second baseman Max Muncy.

The last time Bumgarner faced the Dodgers at Oracle Park on June 9, the San Francisco ace tossed a gem but made one mistake. Muncy took Bumgarner deep in the first inning as the two exchanged words on Muncy’s trip around the bases. Los Angeles won the game, 1-0 as a -160 favorite, marking the second time the Dodgers have beat Bumgarner in three tries this season.

Bumgarner picked up a no-decision in an 8-7 victory over the Brewers in his last start as the left-hander gave up five runs in six innings. The Giants have won three of Bumgarner’s past four outings on the road, including underdog victories over the Mets and Rockies. Tonight’s +160 opener for Bumgarner is his highest ‘dog price of the season, as he won at Chavez Ravine last August as a +180 underdog, 5-2.

Julio Urias makes the start in place of Walker Buehler as Urias has spent the last two months pitching out of the bullpen. The Dodgers’ left-hander last started on April 18 in a 3-1 win at Milwaukee, while tossing five scoreless innings against San Francisco on April 1, but Los Angeles blew a 2-0 lead in a 4-2 setback.

    Betcha didn’t know:
The Cubs’ pitching staff has been solid at Wrigley Field recently by allowing three runs or less in seven of the last nine opportunities. The Cubs picked up a split with the White Sox following last night’s 7-3 win as Chicago welcomes in New York for a four-game set. The Mets have lost seven of their past nine road series openers, while giving up at least eight runs four times in this stretch.

      • Iannetta's hit in 10th helps Rockies sweep D-backs
        June 20, 2019
        By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Gary Sanchez, Gleyber Torres and DJ LeMahieu homered in a hurry, connecting in a six-run fourth inning that powered the New York Yankees past the Houston Astros 10-6 on Thursday night for their sixth straight win.

Edwin Encarnacion hit his AL-leading 23rd home run, and second since being acquired by New York from Seattle, as the Yankees handed Houston its season-worst fifth loss in a row.

The Astros dropped a matchup of division leaders despite Jake Marisnick's two home runs and solo drives by Alex Bregman and rookie Yordan Alvarez.

Sanchez opened the fourth with his 22nd homer. With rain falling, Torres connected for a three-run jolt off rookie Framber Valdez (3-3). LeMahieu tagged reliever Chris Devenski for a two-run homer and a 6-0 lead. The inning included two delays - a short break to fix the mound and a 37-minute stoppage when the showers fell too hard.

Nestor Cortes Jr. (2-0) pitched three innings after another fine start by opener Chad Green. The veteran reliever struck out three in two scoreless innings - Green has filled that role in his last three outings, fanning 12 in six scoreless innings. Aroldis Chapman got the final out with two on for his 20th save in 22 chances.

        NATIONALS 7, PHILLIES 4

WASHINGTON (AP) - Anthony Rendon and Victor Robles homered in a four-run sixth inning, and the Nationals completed a three-game sweep of Philadelphia.

Rendon led off the sixth with a tiebreaking drive against Nick Pivetta (4-2). Kurt Suzuki also went deep for the Nationals, who earned their first three-game sweep of the season. This victory followed a doubleheader win on Wednesday and postponements Monday and Tuesday. After sinking to 19-31 on May 23, Washington has used a 17-7 surge to get within two games of .500 (36-38) for the first time since April 28.

Jean Segura and Jay Bruce hit solo homers for the Phillies, who have lost four straight and eight of 10.

Philadelphia right fielder Bryce Harper was booed loudly in the stadium he called home during the first seven years of his career. Playing his second series in Washington after signing a $330 million, 13-year contract with the Phillies in March, Harper batted leadoff for the first time this season and went 1 for 5 with three strikeouts.

        REDS 7, BREWERS 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jose Iglesias homered and drove in four runs, Tanner Roark allowed one run - a homer by major league leader Christian Yelich - over six solid innings and Cincinnati earned its fifth straight victory.

Iglesias followed a two-out triple by Yasiel Puig with his fifth homer to put the Reds up 5-1 in the fifth. He also singled in two runs in the first. Nick Senzel hit his seventh homer for the Reds.

Roark (5-6), who had lost three consecutive starts and five of his last six, allowed three hits, struck out seven and hit three batters. Jared Hughes followed with two scoreless innings and Zach Duke finished.

Yelich, the reigning NL MVP, opened the fourth with his 28th homer, sending a 2-2 pitch from Roark 462 feet to right to extend his hitting streak to 17 games, matching his career high.

Jimmy Nelson (0-2) continued to struggle in his comeback after missing all of last season following right shoulder surgery. He allowed five runs and seven hits with four walks and a hit batter in five innings.

        CUBS 7, METS 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Cubs top pitching prospect Adbert Alzolay tossed four innings of dazzling relief in his major league debut and the offense broke through with a six-run third to beat New York.

Javier Baez homered and tripled, and Anthony Rizzo hit a two-run double as the NL Central leaders improved to 26-12 at Wrigley Field.

Rookie slugger Pete Alonso hit his 25th homer and Todd Frazier connected for the 200th of his career for the Mets, who dropped to 15-26 on the road. Before the game, they fired pitching coach Dave Eiland and bullpen coach Chuck Hernandez - but it made little difference on this night.

Alonso tied Dodgers star Cody Bellinger (2017) for most homers by an NL rookie before the All-Star break. Alonso also is one shy of the Mets' rookie mark set by Darryl Strawberry in 1983.

Alzolay (1-0) replaced starter Tyler Chatwood to begin the fifth. The right-hander struck out five and didn't allow a hit until Frazier's leadoff homer in the ninth. Steve Cishek got three outs for his seventh save.

New York spot starter Walker Lockett (0-1) retired his first six batters and had a 3-0 lead when he took the mound in the third following Alonso's two-run shot. But things quickly fell apart for the 25-year-old right-hander, who was pitching in place of injured Noah Syndergaard.

        MARLINS 7, CARDINALS 6, 11 INNINGS

ST. LOUIS (AP) - JT Riddle hit a two-run homer in the 11th, Zac Gallen was effective in his major league debut and the Miami Marlins edged the Cardinals.

Brian Anderson also went deep and drove in two runs for the Marlins, who earned a split of the four-game series.

Rookie infielder Tommy Edman homered for the Cardinals, who rallied from 4-1 and 5-3 deficits.

Riddle connected off Andrew Miller (3-3) with one out for a 7-5 lead.

Jarlin Garcia (1-0) got the win with two innings of relief, and Sergio Romo closed for his 13th save in 14 chances. He gave up a two-out RBI double to Yadier Molina, but ended the game by picking off pitcher Jack Flaherty at second base. Flaherty was pinch-running for Molina.

        ROCKIES 6, DIAMONDBACKS 4, 10 INNINGS

PHOENIX (AP) - Chris Iannetta's two-run, bases-loaded single in the 10th lifted the Colorado Rockies to a victory that completed a three-game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Iannetta, a former Diamondbacks catcher, singled off the center-field wall against Yoshihisa Hirano (3-4) with one out to drive in Ian Desmond and Brendan Rodgers. The Rockies had tied it at 4 on Tony Wolters' pinch-hit RBI single in the ninth off Arizona closer Greg Holland.

Scott Oberg (5-0) got the win with two scoreless innings in relief, but had to pitch out of jam in the bottom of the 10th when the Diamondbacks loaded the bases with one out. He got Ildemaro Vargas to fly out, and then struck out David Peralta swinging to end the game.

Charlie Blackmon and Desmond homered for the Rockies, who have won eight in a row over the Diamondbacks. Nolan Arenado left with a bruised left big toe after fouling a ball off his foot.

Christian Walker's two-run, pinch-hit homer keyed a three-run sixth for the Diamondbacks. Ketel Marte had four hits and tied a club record for consecutive three-hit games with his fourth.

        BLUE JAYS 7, ANGELS 5, 10 INNINGS

TORONTO (AP) - Billy McKinney's two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th lifted the Blue Jays over the Los Angeles Angels to avoid a four-game sweep.

Randal Grichuk singled with one out and McKinney, who entered the game as a pinch-runner in the eighth inning, went deep off Ty Buttrey (4-4) in his first at-bat since being recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday. It was McKinney's fourth homer of the season.

Nick Kingham (1-0) pitched a scoreless top of the 10th to get the win.

The Blue Jays led 5-3 before the Angels pulled within one on Luis Rengifo's RBI single to shallow in the top of the sixth, and tied it on Albert Pujols' sacrifice fly in the seventh. Rengifo, who homered earlier in the game, finished with three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored.

        RANGERS 4, INDIANS 2

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Elvis Andrus homered and had an RBI triple to back another impressive home start by Mike Minor as the Rangers earned a series split.

Minor (7-4) limited the Indians to three hits and one run over eight innings after they had scored 10 runs each of the last two nights. The lefty struck out four and walked three while throwing 70 of 110 pitches for strikes.

Danny Santana went deep in the Rangers' eighth, his third homer in the four-game series and seventh overall. Andrus immediately followed with his seventh homer, his first since May 12 at Houston.

They also teamed up for the first two Texas runs. Andrus tripled to right-center in the first inning after Santana had doubled and stolen third base. Andrus raced home on a wild pitch by Shane Bieber (6-3) that ricocheted off catcher Kevin Plawecki and went several feet in front of the plate.

Shawn Kelley worked the ninth for his ninth save in 13 chances after giving up a leadoff homer to Carlos Santana.

        ROYALS 4, TWINS 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Alex Gordon had a two-run single and Lucas Duda added an RBI single as the Royals jumped on Jake Odorizzi in the first inning and beat the Minnesota Twins.

Glenn Sparkman (2-3) gave up just one run and five hits in a season high-tying seven innings. He walked one and struck out three. Duda, had two hits and scored a run to help the Royals win for the fourth time in five games.

Jake Diekman pitched a perfect eighth, and Ian Kennedy got the last three outs for his ninth save in 11 opportunities.

Odorizzi (10-3) came in tied with Chicago White Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito for the major league lead in wins, but lasted just four innings. He gave up four runs and eight hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Jorge Polanco homered for Minnesota's lone run.

            **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Wrapping up a busy Thursday……..

            13) I’m not fond of how the NBA runs it draft; when a pick gets traded (the #4 pick got traded twice), they still have the team who originally had the pick posted as the team making that pick. It is nonsensical.

Lakers had the #4 pick; they traded it to New Orleans, who traded it to Atlanta; everyone in the damn country knows this, so post it on your graphics and announce it as Atlanta’s pick— how freaking difficult can that be?

            12) One of the most interesting teams in the NBA next season will be Cleveland, since 66-year old John Beilein will be a rookie NBA coach, after having been a great college coach.

Cavaliers took PG Darius Garland with the #5 pick; he only played four college games at Vandy before getting hurt, which wound up costing his college coach his job, since the team went in the ashcan without their point guard.

Cleveland already has Collin Sexton, so maybe they foresee a backcourt like Portland’s, with McCollum, Lillard.

            11) Miami Heat traded three 2nd-round picks to Indiana for the 32nd pick, then took 6-10 KZ Okpala from Stanford; this from a scout: “Didn’t always have the defensive impact you might expect, particularly off the ball. Lacks a degree of physicality and toughness at times.”

Three 2nd round picks is a high price, so Miami must see a lot of potential.

            10) New Orleans Pelicans traded the #4 pick, the #57 pick and Solomon Hill to Atlanta for the #8 and #17 picks, giving the Pelicans three first round picks.

With the #4 pick, the Hawks took De’Andre Hunter, who helped lead Virginia to the national title this past spring.

New Orleans took big guy Jaxson Hayes (Texas) and Nickeil Alexander-Walker (Virginia Tech) with the picks they got in the deal.

            9) Oklahoma City took Chuma Okeke with the 16th pick; this is the kid from Auburn who tore his ACL during the NCAA tournament, so he won’t be any help this coming season, but Thunder must figure the knee will be fine. This pick was largely panned by the TV experts.

            8) Gonzaga’s Rui Hachimura, Brandon Clarke both got taken in the first 21 picks, first time ever the Zags have had two first round draft picks in the same year.

            7) You feel bad for kids who show up in Brooklyn for the draft and then slide down the draft board; has to be humbling. Oregon’s 7-3 C Bol Bol sat there for four hours before he wound up with the Denver Nuggets, the 44th player taken.

Bol is 7-foot-3 with a standing reach of 9’7.5, shot 52% from the arc, is an elite rim protector, averaged 21.0 ppg, 9.6 rpg, 2.7 bpg in nine games. Doesn’t turn 20 until November, but teams have questions whether he really loves basketball, which would be a serious problem.

            6) Former Today Show host Matt Lauer put his Hamptons mansion on Long Island up for sale for about $44M, now that his divorce is final.

People say athletes are overpaid, and most are, but a guy hosting a 7am news show owning an estate worth $44M? Damn. Just for the record, Lauer bought the estate from Richard Gere for $36.5M in 2016.

            5) Mets fired their pitching coach/bullpen coach Thursday; not sure what the bullpen coach did to get fired, unless he doesn’t answer the bullpen phone fast enough.

The new bullpen coach is Ricky Bones, who was bullpen coach last year but got the boot after the season.

            4) Your tax dollars at work in the Tar Heel State:

Pinecrest HS in North Carolina lost the ACT test answer sheets for their entire junior class — that’s everyone who took the ACT on February 20 and March 13. All 440 answer sheets.

School administrators “have no idea” where the answer sheets are; kids will get re-tested when they go back to school this fall. Not good!!!!

            3) Baseball stuff:
            — Rockies put SS Trevor Story (thumb) on the IL.
            — Rockies’ 3B Nolan Arenado (foot) left Thursday’s game early.

            2) An executive with the New England Patriots decided to leave the team after owner Robert Kraft was charged with two counts of soliciting this past winter; the guy moved on to a similar job with Houston, then created a mess when he tried to recruit Nick Caserio to join him with the Texans. That is tampering, so Caserio remains in Foxboro.

How much will all this affect Caserio’s work this season? His contract is up after the 2020 draft; will he move on to Houston then?

            1) Tampa Bay Rays got permission from MLB to explore splitting their home games between St Petersburg and Montreal; the mayor of St Pete wasn’t pleased.

“I believe this is getting a bit silly. After 12 years of indecision… I am tired of the games that are being played related to getting a new stadium built.”

Hottest team: Yankees (6-0 last six)

New York didn’t let up following a three-game sweep of Tampa Bay as the Yankees held off the Astros, 10-6. The Yankees stand one game behind the Astros for the best record in the American League at 47-27, while beating Houston for the first time in four tries. The Bronx Bombers went deep four times in Thursday’s victory, including Edwin Encarnacion’s AL-leading 23rd home run and first as a Yankee after getting acquired from the Mariners.

James Paxton takes the mound for New York tonight as the southpaw allowed five runs in four innings of an 8-6 loss at Houston back in mid-April. Paxton shut down the White Sox in his past outing last Sunday by yielding two runs in six innings of a 10-3 blowout. The southpaw is riding a 6-1 run to the OVER the last seven outings, while the Yankees have scored at least six runs in nine of his past 10 starts.

Coldest team: Phillies (2-8 last 10)

The expectations were sky high in Philadelphia following several key offseason acquisitions, including the signing of free agent Bryce Harper to a megadeal. But the Phillies have slumped in June by losing 11 of 17 games, including dropping five of six games on their road trip at Atlanta and Washington. The Nationals pulled off a three-game sweep of the Phillies in D.C., capped off by a 7-4 victory by Washington on Thursday.

The Phillies return to Citizens Bank Park tonight to host the Marlins as ace Aaron Nola heads to the hill. Nola has been up and down of late as the righty gave up five runs in less than five innings in a 6-5 win at Atlanta. The Phillies rallied for two runs in the ninth inning (the only win on the recent road trip), as Philadelphia looks to improve to 4-1 in Nola’s last five home starts.

Hottest pitcher: Walker Buehler, Dodgers (7-1, 3.06 ERA)

Buehler was slated to pitch on Thursday against San Francisco but was pushed back to tonight as Los Angeles hosts Colorado. The right-hander is fresh off a pair of consecutive scoreless outings against the Giants and Cubs, but picked up a no-decision in a 2-1 defeat to Chicago his last time out. Buehler has delivered quality starts in seven of his last eight appearances, while shutting down the Rockies in a 7-2 victory at Coors Field back in early April.

Coldest pitcher: Joe Musgrove, Pirates (4-7, 4.87 ERA)

The Pittsburgh right-hander began the season on fire by posting five straight quality starts, but things have gone downhill since. The Pirates are 3-7 in Musgrove’s last 10 starts, which doesn’t include an outing at Atlanta in which he was ejected after hitting Braves’ third baseman Josh Donaldson in the first inning. Musgrove came out three days later to start again at SunTrust Park, but the former Astros’ hurler allowed six runs in four innings of a 6-5 defeat. Musgrove faces the Padres at PNC Park tonight as he beat San Diego last month, 6-4 as a short underdog in spite of giving up four runs.

Biggest OVER run: Blue Jays (7-1-1 last nine)

Toronto avoided a four-game sweep against Los Angeles by knocking off the Angels in 10 innings on Thursday, 7-5. The Blue Jays’ offense has woken up recently by scoring five runs or more in four of the last five games, while posting 12 runs twice in the past eight contests. Toronto travels to Boston as the Blue Jays and Red Sox have hit the OVER in five of six matchups, while the winning team has plated at least six runs in every victory. Trent Thornton has not faced the Red Sox this season, but the Jays are 4-1 in his last five starts in the role of a road underdog, while tossing 6.2 scoreless innings in a 12-0 shutout of the Astros last Sunday.

Biggest UNDER run: Reds (15-1 last 16)

Cincinnati’s pitching continues to excel as the Reds shut down the powerful Brewers’ lineup in Thursday’s 7-1 rout at Miller Park. The Reds not only picked up their fifth consecutive win (the last four against defending division champions), but Cincinnati has allowed three runs or less during each game in this hot streak. Cincinnati is riding an eight-game UNDER streak away from Great American Ballpark as Sonny Gray tries to keep this stretch going. The Reds have won five of Gray’s last six outings, including tossing six scoreless innings in a 3-0 victory at Milwaukee last month.

Matchup to watch: Braves vs. Nationals

Washington has come back to life recently by winning 17 of its last 24 games, including pulling off a three-game sweep of the reeling Phillies at home. The Nationals are within two games of the .500 mark as they welcome in the NL East-leading Braves. Atlanta is also on fire recently by posting an 11-2 record the last 13 games, which includes series victories over the Marlins, Pirates, Phillies, and Mets.

Tonight is the much-anticipated Braves’ debut of former Astros’ ace Dallas Keuchel. The 2015 AL Cy Young winner sat out the first two months of the season as a free agent before settling on Atlanta as the southpaw finished 2018 owning a 12-11 record and 3.74 ERA in Houston. Keuchel made two starts in the minors as he allowed 11 hits and three runs in seven innings of his most recent outing at Double-A Mississippi.

Stephen Strasburg hasn’t pitched well at home recently by getting tagged for 11 runs in his last two appearances at Nationals Park against the White Sox and Diamondbacks. Although Washington rallied past Chicago on June 4 in a 9-5 triumph, the Nationals fell short against Arizona last Saturday in a 10-3 setback as a -215 favorite. Strasburg defeated the Braves at SunTrust Park in late May, 5-4 by striking out 11 batters in seven innings of work.

                        Betcha didn’t know:
The road team has dominated the Giants/Diamondbacks series this season by going 5-1. Arizona swept San Francisco at Oracle Park last month, as the two teams hook up in Phoenix this weekend. The D-backs were just swept by the Rockies at home as Arizona has lost five of its past six games. The Giants are riding a 5-0 run in the last five series openers, including underdog road victories against the Mets and Dodgers.

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                          BACK WHERE IT BEGAN

Albert Pujols returns for his first game in St. Louis since leaving the Cardinals to sign a $240 million contract with the Angels before the 2012 season. The slugger won three NL MVP awards and made nine All-Star teams with the Cardinals, leading them to World Series championships in 2006 and 2011. Pujols, sixth on the career list with 645 home runs, batted .328 with 455 doubles, 445 homers and 1,329 RBIs in 1,705 games for St. Louis. He is scheduled to meet the media at Busch Stadium before the opener of an interleague series.

                          JUDGE-MENT DAY

Aaron Judge is all set to swing back into action for the first-place New York Yankees. The slugger is expected to be reinstated from the injured list to play against Houston, his first game since straining his left oblique April 20. ''I'm not going to try to baby it or go at 80%. We're in the major leagues,'' Judge said Thursday at Yankee Stadium. ''We're ready to go. That's not something I'm worried about happening again.'' Judge wrapped up a five-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, going 2 for 16 with a homer.

                          BRAVE NEW WORLD

Dallas Keuchel makes his season debut in his initial start for first-place Atlanta at Washington. After a long wait in free agency, the 2015 AL Cy Young Award winner signed a one-year deal this month that pays him $13 million. The two-time All-Star went 12-11 with a 3.74 ERA in 34 starts last season for Houston. Stephen Strasburg (7-4, 3.75 ERA) takes the ball for the Nationals, who are coming off a three-game sweep of Philadelphia in a rain-shortened series. They've used a 17-7 surge to get within two games of .500 (36-38) for the first time since April 28.

                          NORTHERN EXPOSURE?

Starved for fans despite success on the field, the Tampa Bay Rays have been given the go-ahead by Major League Baseball to look into playing a split season in Montreal. No timetable for the possible plan was announced. An idea under consideration is for the Rays to play early in the season in Tampa Bay and finish up in Montreal, home of the Expos from 1969-2004 before they moved to Washington and became the Nationals.

''My priority remains the same, I am committed to keeping baseball in Tampa Bay for generations to come,'' Rays principal owner Stu Sternberg said in a statement. ''I believe this concept is worthy of serious exploration.''

Forget it, St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman said. Tropicana Field is located in his city.

''I want to be crystal clear. The Rays cannot explore playing any Major League Baseball games in Montreal, or anywhere else for that matter, prior to 2028 without reaching a formal memorandum of understanding with the city of St. Petersburg,'' he said. ''And ultimately such a decision is up to me, and I have no intention of bringing this idea to our city council to consider. In fact, I believe this is getting a bit silly.''

                          ENCORE! ENCORE!

Indians right-hander Trevor Bauer (5-6) ended the longest winless drought of his career with his first major league shutout Sunday in Detroit. Now he gets to face the Tigers again. After a 5-2 road trip, Cleveland is home for the opener of a weekend series. Bauer is back on the mound five days after his four-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks against the Tigers. He was 0-5 over his previous eight outings before Cleveland won 8-0 in his 166th career start since his big league debut in 2012.

                            • Yanks win 7th straight, top sliding Astros
                              June 21, 2019
                              By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Gary Sanchez and Gleyber Torres each homered for the third game in a row, providing a pair of two-run shots that sent the New York Yankees past the skidding Houston Astros 4-1 on Friday night for their seventh straight victory.

Aaron Judge was hitless in his return to the lineup - batting leadoff - but James Paxton (5-3) won consecutive starts for the first time with the Yankees, who matched their longest winning streak of the year.

Houston wasted a strong start from Brad Peacock (6-5) and has dropped six in a row for the first time since July 2015.

Paxton went five-plus innings before handing a slim lead to a shutdown bullpen that delivered again for the AL East leaders.

Aroldis Chapman got three outs for his 21st save in 23 attempts. He was checked by a trainer after slipping to the turf while fielding Jose Altuve's bunt single with two outs in the ninth. Then he threw a called third strike past rookie bopper Yordan Alvarez with two aboard to end it.

Houston went 1 for 13 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 in all.

The Astros scored on successive doubles by Tyler White and Jake Marisnick with two outs in the fourth.

                              CARDINALS 5, ANGELS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Albert Pujols drew huge cheers in his long-awaited return to St Louis, but Marcell Ozuna spoiled the homecoming with a home run that helped the Cardinals beat Los Angeles.

Pujols spent the first 11 years of his All-Star career with the Cardinals, helped them win the 2011 World Series and then signed with Angels as a free agent. Due to inconsistent interleague scheduling, this was the first time the Angels have visited St. Louis since Pujols left. He went 1 for 2 with a walk.

Ozuna's solo homer in the sixth broke a 1-1 tie. Ozuna also had RBI singles in the fourth and seventh.

Michael Wacha (5-3) went six innings, struck out four, walked one and retired the final eight batters he faced.

Griffin Canning (2-4) sent down the first nine batters he faced before running into control issues in the fourth.

                              DODGERS 4, ROCKIES 2

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Walker Buehler struck out a career-high 16 in his first complete game and Los Angeles rallied on Matt Beaty's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth.

With two outs, Max Muncy walked and Beaty followed with a shot to center field off Jairo Diaz (1-2).

Buehler's nine innings were a career high. He gave up two homers, and the only other hit he allowed was a single to Charlie Blackmon in the ninth.

The NL West-leading Dodgers have won nine in a row against second-place Rockies.

German Marquez gave up two runs - one earned - and five hits in eight innings. The right-hander struck out eight with no walks.

Blackmon and Nolan Arendado homered for the Rockies.

                              MARLINS 2, PHILLIES

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Sandy Alcantara pitched 7 2/3 sharp innings, Bryan Holaday hit a solo homer and Miami dealt Philadelphia its fifth straight loss.

Alcantara (4-6) gave up one run, eight hits and struck out six. Sergio Romo earned his 14th save in 15 tries.

Phillies ace Aaron Nola (6-2) allowed two runs - one earned - and six hits, striking out 10 in eight innings.

The Marlins went ahead in the sixth after Brian Anderson got hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved to third on Starlin Castro's single. Anderson scored when third baseman Scott Kingery bobbled Cesar Puello's slow roller for an error.

The Phillies tied it a 1 in the third when Roman Quinn stole home.

                              NATIONALS 4, BRAVES 3

WASHINGTON (AP) - Dallas Keuchel labored through five innings in his Atlanta debut, coughing up a three-run lead in a loss to Washington.

Keuchel (0-1) made his first first major league appearance since starting Game 3 of last year's AL Championship Series for the Houston Astros. He never retired Washington in order and gave up four runs, three earned, on eight hits. He hit two batters.

The Braves had won 11 of 13. The third-place Nationals have won five straight and nine of 12.

Atlanta led 3-0 in the fourth thanks to a two-run homer by Austin Riley and an RBI double by Freddie Freeman.

In the bottom half, Victor Robles lined an RBI triple and scored on Michael A. Taylor's squeeze bunt. Yan Gomes homered to tie it at 3-3.

Washington pushed ahead in the fifth, when Juan Soto led off with a triple and Anthony Rendon singled him home.

Stephen Strasburg (8-4) allowed three runs in six innings. Wander Suero allowed the first two runners to reach in the ninth before retiring the side for his first career save.

                              PIRATES 2, PADRES 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Joe Musgrove pitched five-hit, one-run ball through seven innings, and Pittsburgh capitalized on two errors by Manny Machado in a win over San Diego.

Musgrove (5-7) struck out eight. Felipe Vazquez gave up one hit in the ninth and picked up his 18th save.

Machado, playing his 1,000th major league game, fumbled a ground ball from Jung Ho Kang at third base in the seventh inning before tossing it past first base. Jose Osuna drove in Steven Brault, who was pinch-running for Kang, to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead.

Pittsburgh reliever Kyle Crick walked the bases loaded in the eighth before getting Franmil Reyes to pop to first to end the inning.

The Pirates won for the third time in four games after losing 19 of their previous 26. The Padres had their four-game winning streak halted.

The loss spoiled an efficient outing by Padres starter Eric Lauer (5-7), who allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits in seven innings with 80 pitches (58 strikes).

                              METS 5, CUBS 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Jeff McNeil homered and drove in three runs in his first career start in right field as New York beat Chicago.

Michael Conforto also connected and the slumping Mets won for just the fourth time in 11 games. Brooks Pounders (1-0) got four outs for his first victory since he was acquired in a deal with Cleveland last week.

Addison Russell hit a two-run homer for Chicago, which dropped to 2-2 on a 10-game homestand. Brad Brach (3-2) got the loss after surrendering Hechavarria's leadoff single in the seventh.

The Cubs had one last chance in the ninth, but Edwin Diaz worked a perfect inning for his 16th save.

Yu Darvish allowed four runs and four hits in six innings in his 10th consecutive no-decision, extending a franchise record. He became the first traditional starting pitcher with 10 straight no-decisions since Philadelphia's Randy Lerch in 1977.

                              INDIANS 7, TIGERS 6

CLEVELAND (AP) - Jason Kipnis hit a tiebreaking triple in the eighth inning, right fielder Tyler Naquin made a game-saving play in the ninth, and Cleveland beat Detroit.

Kipnis' triple - which was initially ruled a home run, a call that was overturned after a replay review - and Jake Bauers' sacrifice fly put Cleveland ahead 7-5.

Closer Brad Hand, the Indians' fifth reliever, earned his 21st save in 21 opportunities. Adam Cimber (3-2) retired two batters on six pitches in the eighth.

Carlos Santana, Naquin and and Jordan Luplow homered for the Indians.

Joe Jimenez (2-5) took the loss. Detroit starter Matthew Boyd allowed five runs in six innings.

RED SOX 7, BLUE JAYS 5, 10 INNINGS

BOSTON (AP) - Christian Vazquez hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning to cap Boston's comeback from four runs down.

Boston trailed 5-1 before scoring three runs in the seventh on Andrew Benintendi's RBI single and J.D. Martinez's two-run single, and tying it in the eighth on pinch-hitter Rafael Devers' run-scoring single.

Jordan Romano (0-1) got two quick outs in the 10th before hitting Marco Hernandez with a pitch. Vazquez then drove a 3-2 pitch out to right for his ninth homer of the season to give the Red Sox their eighth win in nine games.

Brandon Workman (6-1) pitched a scoreless 10th for Boston.

Randal Grichuk homered for Toronto, which got six strong innings from rookie Trent Thornton.

Thornton pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing two runs and eight hits, with one walk and seven strikeouts.

                              WHITE SOX 5, RANGERS 4, 10 INNINGS

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Eloy Jimenez scored on a sacrifice squeeze bunt by Yolmer Sanchez in the 10th inning and Chicago beat Texas in a game that included two impressive home runs.

Zack Collins got his first big league start for the White Sox and went deep in the second inning. His three-run homer to center was measured at 447 feet by MLB's StatCast.

That was after Rangers right fielder Nomar Mazara pulled a two-run shot into the second deck of seats in right field in the first that MLB's system said would have gone 505 feet unimpeded. That matched the longest ever recorded by StatCast, which is in only its fifth season of use.

In the end, small ball won against Shawn Kelley (3-2). Rougned Odor also homered for the Rangers.

Kelvin Herrera (3-3) struck out the only batter he faced. Alex Colome worked the 10th for his 16th save.

                              TWINS 8, ROYALS 7

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Max Kepler's single drove in the tiebreaking run and Eddie Rosario added a run-scoring hit to cap Minnesota's three-run rally in the eighth.

Minnesota scored five runs in the last three innings to avoid its first three-game losing streak of the season.

Ryne Harper (3-0) pitched one-plus inning to pick up the win despite allowing Jorge Soler's 21st leadoff home run in the eighth that pulled the Royals back within one. Taylor Rogers got the last six outs for his ninth save in 11 chances.

Cheslor Cuthbert had three hits and four RBIs - tying career highs in both - for the Royals, who have lost a major league-high 26 games in which they've held a lead. Kansas City has been outscored 177-125 after the sixth inning this season.

Royals starter Jakob Junis allowed three runs and six hits in six innings.

Martin Perez gave up six runs - four earned - in five innings for the Twins.

                              REDS 11, BREWERS 7

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jose Iglesias had four hits and drove in two runs and the Cincinnati extended its winning streak to a season-high six games.

Milwaukee's Christian Yelich hit a two-run homer in the fifth, his third in three games, and extended his hitting streak to a career-high 18 games. He has 29 homers this season, tying him with Prince Fielder in 2007 for the most in franchise history before the All-Star break.

Cincinnati scored three runs in the first with just one hit and led 6-1 before Yelich and Mike Moustakas homered off starter Sonny Gray in the fifth. The Brewers lost their fifth straight.

David Hernandez (2-3) got the victory with 1 2/3 innings of one-hit relief.

Chase Anderson (3-2) allowed six runs on six hits in five innings for Milwaukee.

PHOENIX (AP) - Alex Dickerson had a grand slam and six RBIs in his San Francisco debut, Kevin Pillar had four RBIs and the Giants rolled over Arizona.

Dickerson, who was traded from San Diego on June 10, was called up from Triple-A Sacramento after Steven Duggar went on the 10-day injured list with a lower back strain. He made the most of the call-up, crushing his second career grand slam 458 feet to center off Taylor Clarke (1-3) to put the Giants up 6-0 in the third inning.

Dickerson added a two-run triple in the seventh, finishing a double shy of the cycle.

Pillar hit a two-run homer off Clarke in the second inning and had a two-run single in the seventh after Arizona rallied with five runs against Jeff Samardzija (4-6).

Arizona's Nick Ahmed hit a two-run home. The Diamondbacks loaded the bases in the ninth inning, but Will Smith struck out the final two hitters.
