          STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTING PITCHERS

          STREAKING

Cole Hamels, Chicago Cubs (6-2, 2.98 ERA, $465):
Hamels is another veteran who just needed a change of scenery. He has been fantastic since joining the Cubs and boy, the lefty sure is dialed in right now. Hamels hasn’t allowed an earned run in his last three starts on just 11 hits with 23 strikeouts. He and the Cubs hope to keep it rolling when they host their cross-town rivals tonight. The Cubs are currently hefty -225 favorites with a total of 8.

          SLUMPING

Jake Arrieta, Philadelphia Phillies (6-5, 4.31 ERA, $109):
The Phillies haven’t been as dominant as many expected them to be this season and starting pitching, including Arrieta, has been one of the problems.

Arrieta has been roughed up over his last three starts, pitching to a 7.47 ERA and an even uglier 2.11 WHIP, while walking nearly as many batters (10) as he has struck out (11). He has also given up five dingers over that span. The Phillies hope Arrieta gets back on track when they visit the Nationals. Philly is currently a +140 road dog with a total of 9.5.

          3 STRIKES

          SO WE MEET AGAIN

Marlins right-hander Jordan Yamamoto made his career debut last week against the Cardinals and threw seven innings of scoreless ball, allowing just three hits in the process. Not only did he impress on the mound but he also drove in a run on a bunt. Yamamoto will make his second start today, once again versus the Cardinals.

The Cards are an impressive 21-13 at home and will be starting Jack Flaherty (4-3, 4.28 ERA). The Marlins are just 2-9 in their last 11 games overall and have +190 odds to pull off the upset tonight.

          BOUNCE BACK GAME

The Dodgers had an uncommon home loss to the Giants last night, which means they've dropped two of their last three games at Dodger Stadium. Even with those two defeats they're still 21-5 in their last 26 games at home and should be in a good position to get back on track with lefty Clayton Kershaw on the mound.

Kershaw is 6-1 with a 3.13 ERA and 1.08 WHIP, and the Dodgers have won 18 of the last 19 regular season games that Kershaw has started going back to last season. San Fran is dead-last in the majors in both batting average (.224) and slugging percentage (.338) against southpaws. The Dodgers are -240 favorites for this matchup with the -1.5 run line paying out at -115.

          KEEP ON SURVIVING

User just won $25,000 in our Streak Survivor Contest and is four wins away from winning $100,000. Mctrap has won an incredible 21 games in a row and his pick for tonight is the Over 9 between the Royals and Mariners.

Currently the O/U for that game is set at 9.5 at many books but tailing the Over still makes lots of sense. Seattle has gone 50-23-3 to the Over in 2019 and will be starting Yusei Kikuchi who is 3-4 with a 4.78 ERA and 1.43 WHIP. Homer Bailey and his 5.37 ERA will take to the mound for the Royals.

              • Jason deGrom, Alonso lead Mets past East-leading Braves 10-2
                June 18, 2019
                By The Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) Jacob deGrom took a shutout into the ninth inning, Pete Alonso homered to highlight the first four-hit game of his young career, and the New York Mets routed the first-place Atlanta Braves 10-2 on Tuesday night.

Bouncing back from an ugly 12-3 loss in the series opener, the Mets pounded Braves starter Julio Teheran for six runs over four innings and cruised to a victory that eased some of the tension from a disappointing season.

DeGrom (4-6) dominated, allowing just five hits, struck out 10 and helped himself at the plate, leading off the sixth with a double and coming around to score.

Freddie Freeman and Josh Donaldson hit back-to-back homers off deGrom in the ninth, ending a bid for the second shutout and fourth complete game of his career. Robert Gsellman came on for the beleaguered Mets bullpen to strike out the final two Atlanta hitters.

Michael Conforto added a long homer in the eighth, and Jeff McNeil went deep in the ninth to finish off the 15-hit barrage.

Conforto and Todd Frazier both had two RBIs. McNeil added three hits, and every Mets starter had at least one.

Teheran (5-5) lost for the first time since April 30.

                YANKEES 6, RAYS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Cameron Maybin homered again with his roster spot in doubt, Edwin Encarnacion went deep for his first hit with the Yankees and New York beat Tampa Bay to extend its AL East lead to 2 + games.

New York won its fourth straight and has taken 9 of 12 against the second-place Rays dating to last season.

Gary Sanchez had two RBIs and J.A. Happ (7-3) pitched two-run ball over five innings. Giancarlo Stanton returned from the injured list to play right field and reached into the seats in foul territory for a key out in the second.

The Rays lost back-to-back road games for just the second time this season.

Stanton was 0 for 4 with two strikeouts in his first big league action since March 31.

                ATHLETICS 16, ORIOLES 2

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Khris Davis, Robbie Grossman and Stephen Piscotty homered in a 10-run sixth inning, and Oakland hit six home runs overall in a rout of Baltimore.

Ramon Laureano, Chad Pinder and Beau Taylor also homered as the A's set a season-high for home runs. It's the first time that Oakland has had six home runs in a game since June 17, 2008.

Brett Anderson (7-4) allowed one earned run and four hits in seven innings in beating the Orioles for the second time this season.

Laureano finished with four hits and made a terrific running catch before crashing into the center field wall. Matt Olson added two hits and scored twice.

Oakland hadn't scored 10 or more runs in an inning at the Coliseum since July 5, 1996.

Three of Oakland's home runs came off Baltimore starter Gabriel Ynoa (0-4). Ynoa allowed seven hits and a career-high six runs in 5 1/3 innings.

                REDS 4, ASTROS 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Jesse Winker and Derek Dietrich homered off Justin Verlander in the first inning and Cincinnati beat Houston to clinch its first series win in nearly a month.

The Reds won a series for the first time since May 24-26, when they took two of three from the Cubs. The Astros hadn't dropped a series since April 29-May 2.

Winker connected on the fourth pitch from Verlander (9-3). Joey Votto doubled and Dietrich's first homer since May 28 made it 3-0. Kyle Farmer added a homer in the seventh off.

Verlander went seven innings and struck out eight.

Anthony DeSclafani (4-3) pitched into the sixth inning and gave up six hits. Michael Lorenzen retired the side in order in the ninth for his second straight save and fourth overall.

                TIGERS 5, PIRATES 4

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Nicholas Castellanos trotted home when a potential double play in the eighth turned into an RBI fielder's choice due to some indecisiveness by Pittsburgh second baseman Adam Frazier.

The Tigers loaded the bases off Kyle Crick (2-3) with one out when Brandon Dixon hit a grounder that rolled under Crick's glove right to Frazier. Instead of flipping to shortstop Kevin Newman in hopes of turning an inning-ending double play, Frazier tried to tag Detroit's Christin Stewart between first and second. Stewart backed off to avoid the tag, breaking up the play and forcing for Frazier to settle for one out instead of two.

Buck Farmer (4-4) earned the win. Shane Greene earned his American League-leading 21st save. Miguel Cabrera had two hits as Detroit beat the Pirates for just the second time in their last 10 meetings.

Bell hit his 20th home run for Pittsburgh. Jung Ho Kang hit an RBI triple - his first three-base hit since 2015 - and Colin Moran added to Pittsburgh's major-league leading pinch-hit total on an RBI single in the seventh.

TORONTO (AP) - Tyler Skaggs pitched into the eighth inning, Kole Calhoun and Brian Goodwin hit solo homers and Los Angeles remained unbeaten in five games against Toronto this season.

Skaggs (6-6) went a season-best 7 1/3 innings. He allowed a run and three hits, walked none and struck out six. Ty Buttrey got two outs in the eighth, and Hansel Robles finished for his 11th save in 13 opportunities.

Both homers came off right-hander Marcus Stroman (4-9), who allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings. Stroman has lost three of his past four decisions.

                WHITE SOX 3, CUBS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Eloy Jimenez hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the ninth inning in his first game against his first major league organization, helping the White Sox beat the Cubs.

James McCann hit a leadoff single before Jimenez drove a 1-0 pitch from Pedro Strop (1-3) over the wall in left for his 12th homer.

Evan Marshall (3-0) got two outs for the win and Alex Colome worked the ninth for his 15th save in 15 chances. Four White Sox relievers combined for four scoreless innings after Ivan Nova turned in one of his best starts of the season.

The slumping Cubs kicked off a 10-game homestand with their fourth loss in their last five games. Kyle Schwarber connected for his 16th homer and Cole Hamels pitched seven sparkling innings, becoming the 10th left-hander with 2,500 career strikeouts.

                MARLINS 6, CARDINALS 0

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Rookie Jordan Yamamoto matched his first career start by pitching seven scoreless innings against St. Louis, and Miami earned the shutout.

Yamamoto (2-0) allowed two hits, struck out seven and walked two. He became the first pitcher since Pittsburgh's Nick Maddox in 1907 to beat the Cardinals twice in a seven-day span when the first game was his debut. Relievers Tayron Guerrero and Sergio Romo completed the two-hitter.

Brian Anderson and Starlin Castro homered for the Marlins.

Jack Flaherty (4-4) pitched seven innings, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out eight, and had St. Louis' first hit off Yamamoto.

                INDIANS 10, RANGERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -Rookie Zach Plesac allowed only two hits pitching into the eighth inning and Cleveland had four home runs, including three in a row for the first time in nearly 15 years, to overwhelm Texas.

After Jake Bauers led off the Indians' seventh with a 389-foot shot to right-center, Roberto Perez and Tyler Naquin followed with homers that measured more than 400 feet. Those long balls came in a span of five pitches off reliever Drew Smyly. The last time Cleveland had hit back-to-back-to-back homers was at Seattle on July 16, 2004.

Plesac (2-2) struck out six and walked five.

Texas got two of its five overall hits in the ninth, including Willie Calhoun's two-run homer. Rangers starter Adrian Sampson (5-4) allowed five runs (three earned) in three innings.

Jose Ramirez hit a three-run homer for Cleveland.

                ROCKIES 8, DIAMONDBACKS 1

PHOENIX (AP) - Nolan Arenado homered and drove in three, Antonio Senzatela pitched one-run ball into the seventh inning and Colorado beat Arizona.

Senzatela (6-5) equaled his longest outing of the season with 6 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits with five strikeouts and four walks.

The Rockies took a 2-0 lead on Arenado's high drive into the left field seats off Arizona's Merrill Kelly (7-7) with two out in the first. It scored Blackmon, who led off the game with a double down the right field line.

Blackmon has reached base in 28 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the National League.

The 22-year-old Allen (1-0) was backed by three double plays as well as another dazzling play by rookie shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. Allen held Milwaukee to three hits while striking out five and walking two.

Brandon Woodruff (8-2) allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings, struck out six and walked one.

Dylan Floro struck out three in the eighth. Joe Kelly finished it off in the ninth, giving up a hit and a walk to go with one strikeout.

Rookie Shaun Anderson (2-2) gave up three runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. The right-hander struck out two and walked three.

Joc Pederson hit his 19th homer leading off the game.

                ROYALS 9, MARINERS 0

SEATTLE (AP) - Whit Merrifield had two homers and a career-high six RBIs, Homer Bailey pitched into the eighth inning and Kansas City beat Seattle.

The Royals jumped on struggling starter Yusei Kikuchi to get their third straight win. Kikuchi (3-5) allowed six runs in five innings.

Merrifield drove a three-run homer against Kikuchi in the fourth and added a two-run shot against Jesse Biddle in the eighth. Jorge Soler also homered for the Royals, and rookie Nicky Lopez had three hits.

Bailey (6-6) allowed just one runner past second base with six strikeouts over 7 2/3 innings. He stranded two baserunners in each of the first three innings, then retired 14 of the next 15 batters.

                    Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

                    13) Washington’s best pitcher Max Scherzer broke his nose while working on his bunting during batting practice Tuesday night; he is supposed to pitch for the Nationals today, As I type this, it is unclear whether Scherzer is going to pitch or not.

Phillies-Nationals got rained out for second night in a row, so now Scherzer won’t have to pitch Wednesday so his nose can heal a little bit.

                    12) The resume of Toronto Raptors’ head coach Nick Nurse:
                    1989-90: Northern Iowa (assistant)
                    1990-91: Derby Rams (player/coach)
                    1991-93: Grand View
                    1993-95: South Dakota (assistant)
                    1995-97: Birmingham Bullets
                    1998: Telindus Oolinde
                    1998-200: Manchester Giants
                    2000-01: London Towers
                    2001: Oklahoma Storm (assistant)
                    2001-06: Brighton Bears
                    2005: Oklahoma Storm (assistant)
                    2007-11: Iowa Energy
                    2011-13: Rio Grande Valley Vipers
                    2013-18: Toronto Raptors (assistant)
                    2018-19: Toronto Raptors (head coach)

The man has paid his dues.

                    11) Josh McCown threw passes for seven different NFL teams in his 17-year career, going 23-53 as a starter; he retired this week, but should have an excellent career, either as a coach or on TV- he also signed with ESPN this week.

Only six other QB’s have thrown a pass for seven NFL teams; this fall, Ryan Fitzpatrick is expected to become the first QB to throw a pass for eight NFL teams.

Playing QB in the NFL is profitable, even if you’re a backup; McCown earned $49,668,000 in his playing career, pretty good cash for a guy who won 23 games in 17 years.

                    10) Zion Williamson and Lonzo Ball figure to be teammates with the Pelicans next season; it was July 2017 that I saw Zion’s AAU team play Lavar Ball’s team at an adidas tournament in Las Vegas. Lonzo was sitting in the front row, watching his younger brother play.

That was the night there were so many people in the Cashman Center, when Lebron James pulled up to watch the games, the Las Vegas police told him that he could go in the building, but they couldn’t guarantee his safety in there, so Lebron left.

                    9) Toronto Raptors had their championship parade Monday; thousands of people jammed the streets to celebrate Canada’s first NBA championship. It was estimated that 2,000,000 people jammed the parade route.

                    8) US Open golf champion Gary Woodland originally went to Division II Washburn on a basketball scholarship, but transferred to Kansas after his freshman year and got a golf scholarship from the Jayhawks.

                    7) Angels DFA’d Cesar Puello this week; the guy hit .390 in 12 games (50 PA) and he got freakin’ DFA’d. Hopefully someone will trade for him or pick him up when he becomes a free agent. He is only 28 years old.

                    6) College basketball transfer portal:
                    — Derryck Thornton bolts from USC to Boston College; he had previously played for Duke. If kids could transfer during a TV timeout, he would be a strong candidate to do it.

                    5) San Francisco Giants are struggling at 31-39, but they’re 17-6 in one-run games, 14-33 in all their other games. In other words, they could be a whole lot worse than 31-39.

                    4) Last night, my TV informed me that the batteries were low in my remote control. No idea how my TV knew that, but I paid attention and changed the batteries. Thanks, TV!!!

                    3) Bellarmine College in Louisville is going D-I in basketball, starting in 2020-21; the Knights will play in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

                    2) It must be fun to be a good player in the NBA:
                    — Al Horford turned down his $30.1M option from the Celtics.
                    — Harrison Barnes turned down his $25.1M option from the Kings.

Can you imagine turning down that kind of money? I’d be afraid to walk across the street until I signed a new contract. Guys dislike playing on a team so much that they turn down $25M to go elsewhere. Wow.

                    1) There is a photographer named Tom Fox who was in Dallas Monday to cover a trial; when he got to the courthouse, he saw a gunman and the gunman saw him and the police/gunmen wound up in a shootout, with bullets flying over the photographer’s head (he was hiding behind a column). Mercifully, he didn’t get hit.

The photographer got a great picture of the gunman, the gunman wound up getting killed. Sad way to start the week; imagine having the onions to snap a picture of a guy with an assault rifle who can see you and isn’t that far away? Amazing.

                    • LEADING OFF: Scherzer breaks nose, Judge nears return
                      June 18, 2019
                      By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Wednesday:

                      OUCH!

Nationals ace Max Scherzer has a broken nose after fouling a ball off his face during batting practice Tuesday, and it's unclear when he'll return to the mound. Scherzer was attempting a bunt when he redirected a pitch off his face. The three-time Cy Young Award winner was scheduled to start one of the two games during a day-night doubleheader against Philadelphia on Wednesday. The Nationals said Scherzer's status - as well as the team's pitching plan for the doubleheader - was still to be determined.

                      ROUGH CUTS

With Aaron Judge nearing a return from the injured list, the Yankees are facing an unusual roster crunch. Judge could be back in the Bronx any day, and Cameron Maybin would be a most logical option to get cut on his return - except Maybin has been the club's hottest hitter, homering Tuesday in his fourth consecutive game. Maybin can't be optioned to Triple-A, so keeping him would likely require the Yankees to go short-handed in the bullpen instead.

                      DIGITAL DUSTUP

Major League Baseball said it was inappropriate for the umpires' union to comment on Manny Machado's one-game suspension for his conduct following his ejection for arguing a called third strike Saturday. The MLB Umpires Association tweeted about the ban Tuesday, criticizing Machado for ''VIOLENTLY throwing his bat against the backstop with absolutely no regard to anyone's safety.'' The tweet featured the hashtags (hash)Violence, (hash)TemperTantrum and (hash)NotTolerated and others. MLB said in a statement it does ''not believe it is appropriate for the union representing Major League Umpires to comment on the discipline of players represented by the Players Association.'' MLB also said it was ''inappropriate'' to compare Machado's outburst to the ''extraordinarily serious issue of workplace violence.'' Machado declined comment on the tweet. He is appealing the suspension.

The Cubs plan to move slowly with Kyle Hendricks after tests confirmed the right-hander is dealing with a shoulder impingement. Hendricks was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday, one day after he permitted five runs in 4 1/3 innings in a 5-3 loss to NL West-leading Los Angeles. Hendricks was 6-0 with a 1.99 ERA in his previous eight starts before stumbling against the Dodgers. ''There's no question we'll take the length of the season into account,'' general manager Jed Hoyer said Tuesday before a game against the crosstown White Sox. ''We know how impactful he is when he's right and we want to get him right and if that means patience, we'll exercise patience.''

                      NO HITS OR NO HASSLE

Diamondbacks veteran Zack Greinke makes his first start since taking a no-hitter into the seventh against Washington. Greinke allowed an infield single leading off that inning and was pulled after 7 1/3 innings due to a rain delay, then said the no-hitter wouldn't have mattered much to him anyway. ''I don't really think about (no-hitters) that much. I just assume I'll never throw one,'' he said, later adding: ''Just probably be more hassle than anything.'' Greinke is set to share the mound with Colorado righty Jon Gray.

Hottest team: Indians (7-3 last 10)

Cleveland rebounded from a blowout loss at Texas on Monday night to roll the Rangers last night, 10-3. The Indians have won four of their first five games on their current road trip, while scoring at least eight runs in three of those victories. Although the Tribe remains 10 games behind the Twins for the top spot in the AL Central, Cleveland is one five American League teams to own winning records both at home and on the road this season.

The Indians play the third of their four-game series in Arlington tonight as Adam Plutko takes the mound. Plutko has been solid in June by beating the Yankees and Tigers his last time two times out, while tossing six innings and allowing two runs each. Cleveland enters tonight’s action by winning four consecutive Game 3’s of a road series since May.

Coldest team: Orioles (0-7 last seven)

It’s easy to be slotted in this category when you have dropped 13 consecutive series dating back to early May. The Orioles clinched another series defeat after falling to the Athletics last night, 16-2 as Oakland busted things open by scoring 10 runs in the sixth inning. For the fourth time in five games, the O’s were limited to two runs, while losing their fifth consecutive game to Oakland this season.

The Orioles and A’s finish off their series this afternoon as Baltimore is a heavy underdog once again. Jimmy Yacabonis makes his first start of the season for the O’s following 13 relief appearances as the right-hander owns an ERA of 5.40. For as bad as Baltimore has been this season, the Orioles are trying to avoid only their second sweep in a road series of three or more games.

Hottest pitcher: Lucas Giolito, White Sox (10-1, 2.22 ERA)

The Chicago right-hander keeps impressing with every start he makes following his eighth consecutive victory last Friday. Giolito allowed one run or less for the seventh time in eight outings as he shut down the Yankees in a 10-2 blowout as a short home favorite. Interestingly enough, the two games in which Giolito has received his best run support came against the Bronx Bombers with the 10-run output last Friday and a nine-run burst back in April. Giolito seeks his career-best 11th victory as he faces the cross-town rival Cubs, as the hurler cashed as a +235 underdog at Wrigley Field last May.

Coldest pitcher: Aaron Sanchez, Blue Jays (3-8, 5.04 ERA)

Three seasons ago, Sanchez posted an incredible 15-2 mark to go along with a 3.00 ERA to help lead Toronto to the ALCS. Since 2017, Sanchez has compiled an 8-17 record, as the right-hander is winless in his past nine starts. Sanchez is coming off his worst start of 2019 after getting lit up for eight runs in three innings of a 15-2 drubbing at Houston last Friday. The California native won his first two starts at home this season, but Sanchez and the Jays have failed to pick up a victory at Rogers Center in his last four tries, in spite of tossing at least six innings each time out.

Biggest OVER run: Braves (10-0 last 10)

Although Jacob deGrom shut down the potent Atlanta lineup on Tuesday, the Braves managed to cash their 10th straight OVER thanks to the Mets picking up a 10-2 blowout at SunTrust Park. Tuesday marked the first time in the past 10 contests for the NL East leaders that they were limited to fewer than five runs, while the Braves allowed their most runs since giving up 14 in a home defeat to Washington on May 29. The Braves send out southpaw Max Fried tonight, who has seen the OVER cash in five of his last six starts, while giving up at five runs in two of his past three outings. The Mets have cashed the OVER in three of their last four road games when facing a left-handed starting pitcher, while seeing Fried for the first time in 2019.

Biggest UNDER run: Reds (13-1 last 14)

Cincinnati seeks a sweep this afternoon of the AL West-leading Astros after picking up back-to-back one-run victories. The Reds jumped out to a 3-0 lead in Monday’s contest before holding off the Astros, 3-2 on an 8 ½ total, while Cincinnati scored three early runs off Justin Verlander in last night’s 4-3 triumph. Cincinnati has allowed three runs or less in six of the past seven games, while facing three teams with winning records from the American League (Cleveland, Texas, and Houston). Tyler Mahle takes the ball for the Reds today as the right-hander has seen the UNDER hit in nine of 12 starts this season.

Matchup to watch: Rockies vs. Diamondbacks

Following a wild weekend split with the Padres that included blowing a pair of late leads, the Rockies got back on track in Monday’s 8-1 rout of the Diamondbacks at Chase Field. Colorado continued its dominance of Arizona this season by winning its sixth straight matchup, highlighted by Nolan Arenado’s 18th home run to start the scoring in the first inning.

The D-backs dropped their third straight home series opener, but look to rebound behind their ace on the mound tonight. Zack Greinke is coming off a pair of scoreless appearances his last two times out against the Blue Jays and Nationals on the road by tossing 13.1 innings and yielding six hits and striking out 10 batters. Arizona has won five of Greinke’s six home starts this season, while the former Cy Young winner picked up a pair of no-decisions in two starts at Colorado in one-run losses back in May.

Jon Gray made a rare relief appearance in Sunday’s meltdown loss to San Diego as he walked Padres’ pinch hitter (and pitcher) Matt Strahm with the bases loaded in a 13-13 game with two outs as the Rockies eventually lost, 14-13. The Rockies have won four of Gray’s last five starts, but the right-hander has given up four runs or more in four of his past five outings away from Coors Field. Gray picked up a no-decision against Arizona on May 27 in a 4-3 Rockies’ win in 11 innings as the former Oklahoma standout gave up five hits and two runs in 5.1 innings of work.

                                Betcha didn’t know:
The Tigers captured the opener at Pittsburgh last night to snap a four-game skid. Detroit owns a 1-4 record this season on the road following a victory in a series opener, while giving up at least five runs in all four losses. Jordan Zimmermann returns to the mound after missing nearly the last two months with a right elbow strain as the Detroit right-hander yielded five runs in each of his last three starts prior to his injury.
