  • Diamond Trends - Friday
    Vince Akins

SU Play ON Trend of the Day:

-- The Braves are 28-0 SU since 2014 as a favorite of more than 130 after a game in which their opponent left fewer than ten men on base.

SU Play AGAINST Trend of the Day:

-- The Mariners are 0-20 SU as a 130-plus unrested dog in the first game of a road series when they are off a loss in which they never led. Seattle is 2-17 on the run-line, at an average of minus 132. Not good.

    Batter-Based Trend of the Day:

-- The Mariners are 0-18 SU as a dog of more than 130 when they are not on a three-plus game winning streak and they are off a game as a dog in which Mitch Haniger was hitless.

    Starter-Based Trend of the Day:

-- The Cardinals are 10-0 SU with Miles Mikolas on the road when he went more than five innings in his last start and the Cardinals won.

        STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

        STREAKING

Mike Soroka, Atlanta Braves (6-1, 1.41 ERA, $233):
The news in Atlanta today is about the Braves signing Dallas Keuchel, but the title of best Braves starter still belongs with Mike Soroka, at least for now.

The rookie right-hander finally, had a “bad” start, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings last time out. Yeah, that’s how good he’s been this season. So, we’re giving him a break. His ERA is still 1.41 with a WHIP of 0.91 and on the road his numbers drop to 1.10 and 0.86. Today, Soroka and the Braves are hefty -196 road faves today in Miami with a total of 7.5.

        SLUMPING

Nick Margevicius, San Diego Padres (2-6, 5.40 ERA, $-277):
The Padres resurgence has begun, but they could still use some help in the starting rotation and Margevicius in particular has hit a real rough patch.

The lefty has been touched up for a whopping 11.25 ERA and a 2.08 WHIP over his past three starts, which includes allowing six dingers! He’ll look to bounce back as the Padres host the Nationals tonight where San Diego is essentially a Pick’em at -105 with a total of 9.

        3 STRIKES

        FAMILIAR FOES

The St. Louis Cardinals are on the road against divisional rival Chicago in the afternoon game. These teams have played each other six times this season, going 3-3 with the home side winning every game. The Cubs will start Cole Hamels who got his previous start on Sunday against the Cards and pitched seven scoreless innings in a 2-1 loss. St. Louis will have Miles Mikolas on the mound. Mikolas received his last start last Friday against the Cubs and gave up just one run in six innings in a 2-1 victory. The Under is 5-1 in the Cards last six games and 6-0 in Mikolas' last six starts while the Under has cashed in eight of the previous 11 home games that Hamels has started for the Cubbies. The total for tonight's matchup is 7.5.

        GIANTS LOOKING SMALL

The Dodgers are 5-1 in their last six games on the road and 11-2 in their previous 13 overall. They will be starting Clayton Kershaw (5-0, 3.20 ERA) tonight in San Francisco. L.A. has won all nine games that Kershaw has started this season and the three-time Cy Young winner will be going up against a Giants lineup that bats a pathetic .208 at home. The Dodgers are 16-5 in Kershaw's last 21 starts in San Fran.

The Giants are 4-10 in their previous 14 games and will have Drew Pomeranz toeing the rubber. Pomeranz has been absolutely awful with a 1-6 record and an ERA of 8.08. San Francisco is quite deservedly a massive +200 underdog in this one.

        FACING OFF AGAIN

The Chicago White Sox have lost their last five games on the road but could be poised to turn things around against the Kansas City Royals who are just 1-7 in their previous eight games at home. The Royals give the ball to Homer Bailey (4-6, 6.05 ERA) and are 0-4 in his last four starts, while the White Sox will start Ivan Nova (3-5, 6.24 ERA).

Baily and Nova faced off last week and despite their sky-high ERAs they allowed just one run apiece in a 2-1 Chicago victory. The White Sox are 20-8 to the Under in their last 28 games, while the Royals are 5-2 to the Under in their previous seven contests. The Under is also 5-1 in the last six meetings between these teams.

        • Yonny Chirinos pitches Tampa Bay past Yankees 5-1
          June 7, 2019
          By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) Yonny Chirinos pitched two-hit ball for eight scoreless innings and the Tampa Bay Rays stopped Boston's four-game winning streak, beating the Red Sox 5-1 on Friday night.

Kevin Kiermaier homered and drove in four runs and Ji-Man Choi also homered for the Rays, who didn't need much offense to front Chirinos in the longest outing of his career.

Chirinos (7-2) had never gone more than 7 1-3 innings before stifling the Red Sox. He cruised through the first five innings on just 50 pitches and didn't allow a baserunner or hit until the sixth.

Chirinos struck out six and walked two before Emilio Pagan took over in the ninth. Boston broke up the shutout with doubles by Andrew Benintendi and Xander Bogaerts.

The Rays tagged Rick Porcello (4-6) for four runs on eight hits in six innings in the opener of a four-game series at Fenway Park.

Chirinos didn't allow a baserunner until he walked Brock Holt to start the sixth. Jackie Bradley Jr. followed with a single and Boston loaded the bases with one out, but Chirinos got out of the jam by striking out Benintendi and Rafael Devers.

Kiermaier hit his seventh home run in the ninth.

          DIAMONDBACKS 8, BLUE JAYS 2

TORONTO (AP) - Kevin Cron hit his first major league home run, David Peralta had a solo shot among his three hits and Arizona topped Toronto.

Merrill Kelly (6-6) allowed one run and three hits in seven innings for his second straight victory, and the Diamondbacks used a five-run fourth inning to win for the fourth time in six games.

Archie Bradley worked the eighth and T.J. McFarland finished.

Arizona catcher Carson Kelly hit a solo home run in the ninth, his sixth of the season.

Blue Jays right-hander Marcus Stroman (3-8) gave up eight hits and matched his season-worst by allowing six runs in 5 2/3 innings, losing his second straight outing.

Toronto's Teoscar Hernandez got the Blue Jays on the board with a two-out homer in the fifth, his fourth.

          PHILLIES 4, REDS 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jay Bruce hit a two-run homer, Zach Eflin threw 6 1/3 sharp innings and Philadelphia beat Cincinnati.

Bruce has four homers in four games with the NL East-leading Phillies after hitting 14 for Seattle before he was acquired in a trade last week.

Joey Votto hit a solo shot for the Reds, who have dropped four of five.

Eflin (6-5) gave up two runs - one earned - and four hits. An injury-depleted bullpen missing seven relievers got eight outs, with Hector Neris finishing for his 13th save in 13 tries.

Reds starter Tyler Mahle (2-6) cruised through the first four innings. But J.T. Realmuto led off the fifth with a single and Bruce followed with an opposite-field shot to left-center to give the Phillies a 2-1 lead. Scott Kingery then singled and later scored when catcher Tucker Barnhart tried to pick him off third and made a wild throw for an error.

The Phillies got an insurance run in the eighth on a throwing error.

Mahle allowed three runs - two earned - and four hits in five innings.

          BRAVES 7, MARLINS 1

MIAMI (AP) - Ronald Acuna Jr. hit a score-settling homer off Jose Urena and Atlanta rode starter Mike Soroka to a win over Miami.

Urena was suspended for six games for intentionally hitting Acuna on the arm with a pitch last August, triggering a melee. That may explain why Acuna showboated a bit when he homered in the fourth.

It was Acuna's 13th homer. He also had a one-hop RBI single off the fence against Urena in the second, and a run-scoring single off Wei-Yin Chen in the fifth.

Soroka (7-1) pitched one-run ball into the ninth inning. He gave up three hits, struck out six and won his seventh consecutive decision. He retired 10 in a row before allowing a leadoff walk - his second - in the ninth and then departed. Dan Winkler got the final three outs to complete a five-hitter.

Freddie Freeman hit his 17th home run and contributed three RBIs, and Ozzie Albies added three hits.

Urena (4-7) gave up 11 hits and six runs in three-plus innings, his shortest outing this year.

Starlin Castro led off the second with a double for his 1,500th career hit.

          ROCKIES 5, METS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Ian Desmond got plunked in the back by a pitch from New York rookie Drew Gagnon immediately after two colossal Colorado homers, leading to a bench-clearing scrum late in the Rockies' victory.

The bullpens emptied and players from both sides milled together during two separate dustups, but there did not appear to be any serious pushing or shoving and no punches were thrown.

Antonio Senzatela (5-4) outpitched Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom, and Colorado got homers from David Dahl and Daniel Murphy in a three-run eighth inning. That made it 5-1, and the Rockies went on to their 10th win in 12 games. Senzatela gave up one run and four hits in six innings without a strikeout. Rockies closer Wade Davis, just off the injured list, worked a scoreless ninth.

Two batters before Murphy connected, Dahl hit a titanic two-run homer off Gagnon deep into the second deck in right to make it 4-1.

Michael Conforto homered for the Mets, and deGrom (3-6) allowed two runs and six hits in six innings. He struck out 10.

Raimel Tapia hit an RBI double off deGrom in the third, and Desmond added a run-scoring single in the fourth.

          INDIANS 5, YANKEES 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Carlos Santana's two-run homer in the sixth inning helped rookie Zach Plesac get his first major league win and sent Cleveland past New York.

Santana broke a 2-all tie by connecting on a change-up from Domingo German (9-2), trying to become baseball's first 10-game winner.

Making just his third start, Plesac (1-1) settled down after a few anxious innings and stifled the AL East's top team. The Yankees managed just six hits - and only two after the third - in seven innings against the right-hander and nephew of former major leaguer Dan Plesac.

Nick Wittgren worked a perfect eighth and Brad Hand struck out the side in the ninth for his 19th save in 19 tries.

Tyler Naquin also homered for the Indians. Jason Kipnis had two RBIs for Cleveland.

The Yankees welcomed back shortstop Didi Gregorius, who got two hits playing for the first time since Game 4 of last year's AL Division series against Boston when he injured his elbow making a throw. He underwent Tommy John surgery.

          CUBS 3, CARDINALS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Cole Hamels threw eight innings of three-hit shutout ball, Javier Baez hit a two-run homer and Chicago topped St. Louis.

The Cubs have won four of five since being swept in a three-game series at St. Louis last weekend.

Before starting up at Wrigley Field, the Cubs finalized a three-year contract with Craig Kimbrel that guarantees the closer $43 million.

Hamels (5-2) struck out a season-high 10 and walked one. Harrison Bader, who doubled in the second, was the only Cardinal to reach second base off the left-hander.

Hamels struck out the side in the eighth to finish strong. Pedro Strop gave up a home run in the ninth to Paul DeJong before finishing for his sixth save in eight chances.

Baez's 16th homer was his third in five games. Victor Caratini had two hits, including an RBI double.

Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas (4-6) exited after four innings with a bruised right forearm. He was struck by David Bote's hard comebacker, knocked the ball down and tossed to first for the final out in the bottom of the fourth. Giovanny Gallegos pitched two scoreless innings as three Cardinals relievers shut out the Cubs the rest of the way.

          TWINS 6, TIGERS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Mitch Garver homered and had three hits, Marwin Gonzalez matched his career high with four hits and Minnesota defeated Detroit.

C.J. Cron and Nelson Cruz also homered for Minnesota, which is 6-1 against the Tigers this season.

Ryne Harper (1-0) got his first career win after striking out the side in the seventh inning. Blake Parker pitched the ninth for his ninth save.

Joe Jimenez (2-4) took the loss, allowing two runs in the eighth inning.

Michael Pineda, activated from the injured list before the game, pitched five innings and allowed three runs and eight hits.

Detroit starter Matthew Boyd allowed three runs and nine hits in seven innings. He struck out eight with no walks but allowed two homers.

Detroit has lost 12 of 13 at home.

          ASTROS 4, ORIOLES 3, 11 INNINGS

HOUSTON (AP) - Robinson Chirinos hit an RBI double with two outs in the 11th inning to lift Houston to a win over Baltimore.

Yuli Gurriel singled with one out in the 11th before Chirinos hit a line drive to left field off Branden Kline (1-3), sending Gurriel home. The throw to the plate beat Gurriel, but catcher Chance Sisco bobbled it, allowing Gurriel to score. The play was reviewed, but stood.

Rio Ruiz drove in two runs in the first and Sisco hit a solo homer that put the Orioles up 3-0 in the third.

Josh Reddick had a solo shot in the fifth before Tony Kemp tied it with a two-run homer later in the inning.

Houston starter Gerrit Cole yielded four hits and three runs - one earned - in seven innings. He struck out a season-high 14 to give him an MLB-leading 130 strikeouts this season.

Cionel Perez (1-0) struck out two in three perfect innings for the win. The Astros have won seven of eight.

          ATHLETICS 5, RANGERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Marcus Semien hit his second homer of the game in the ninth inning, a two-run, tiebreaking shot that propelled Oakland past Texas.

Semien drove a 3-2 pitch from Jose Leclerc (1-2) just beyond the right field wall after Jurickson Profar sliced a double inches fair down the left field line. Semien also homered in the fifth inning. His two homers and four hits each matched career highs.

Yusmeiro Petit (1-1) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings before Blake Treinen earned his 13th save.

Lance Lynn limited the A's to two runs and six hits in six innings for his sixth straight quality start. Lynn struck out eight and walked one.

Brett Anderson cruised through five shutout innings on 58 pitches and three hits before Texas tagged him for three runs, the last being Hunter Pence's homer.

          ROYALS 6, WHITE SOX 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Adalberto Mondesi had three hits and two RBIs, and Kansas City ended a six-game losing streak with a win over Chicago.

Mondesi's third hit, an RBI single with two outs in the seventh, scored Whit Merrifield to make it 5-4. He scored on Jorge Soler's RBI double to make it 6-4.

After Homer Bailey pitched six-plus innings of three-run ball, Brad Boxberger (1-3) allowed a run in the seventh for his first victory in 26 appearances. Ian Kennedy pitched the ninth for his fourth save in six chances.

Jace Fry (1-2) took the loss.

Ivan Nova allowed four runs in 5 1/3 innings with six hits and a season-high six strikeouts.

          BREWERS 10, PIRATES 4

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Brandon Woodruff struck 10 in six innings and Ryan Braun hit a three-run homer, helping Milwaukee beat Pittsburgh.

Eric Thames also homered for Milwaukee, and NL MVP Christian Yelich had three hits. Travis Shaw walked twice and scored two runs.

The Brewers improved to 11-2 when Woodruff (8-1) takes the mound this season. The 10 strikeouts matched a career high for the right-hander, who was charged with three runs and four hits.

Bryan Reynolds doubled twice and drove in two runs for Pittsburgh, which has dropped four of its last five against Milwaukee. Rookie Davis (0-1) lasted just three innings in his first start of the season for the Pirates. He allowed three runs and walked five.

Kevin Newman went deep for Pittsburgh, which had won two in a row. Adam Frazier had a run-scoring triple.

              Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

              13) Raptors 105, Warriors 92— Golden State led this game 46-42 at the half, lowest scoring first half in a finals game in four years, but Toronto outscored them 63-46 in second half, and is now one win away from its first NBA title.

From sound of things, Kevin Durant won’t be playing in this series. Game 5 is Monday night in Toronto, where there could be a very big celebration.

              12) McDonald’s locations in Eastern Canada give away free medium orders of french fries whenever the Toronto Raptors hit at least 12 3-pointers in a game.

According to The Financial Post, McDonald’s estimated 700,000 orders, but with the team playing so well, that number has ballooned to nearly three times the original estimate, resulting in approximately $5.4M (just over $4M US$) worth of fries.

              11) Must admit, I don’t get the whole “opener” trend in baseball, unless you have one guy who could be a closer who you prefer to start a game with (Ryan Stanek in Tampa Bay).

Putting a minor leaguer in to pitch the first inning of a game just seems bleeping stupid, like you want to start off at a disadvantage. First inning is the only inning where you’re guaranteed to face the top of the other team’s order- you need a good pitcher there, not some stiff.

              10) Batting the pitcher 8th is kind of the same thing, though at least I can see some logic there, but fewer teams are doing that now. Pretty soon this will be a moot point, because everyone will have the DH in the next couple years.

              9) Houston Texans fired GM Brian Gaine, only 18 months after hiring him, meaning that coach Bill O’Brien is 42-38 in regular season games, 1-3 in playoffs, but has already seen two Texans GM’s fired.

              From Ian Rappaport:
“My understanding is there was no one incident that created the opening. Houston did an evaluation of its football operations and believes — right or wrong — GM Brian Gaine was not good enough. Good, but not good enough.”

In other NFL GM news, the Jets hired Joe Douglas as their GM; he interviewed for the GM job in Houston when they hired Gaine.

              8) ESPN’s Doug Kezirian pointed out that there is a gambler in Las Vegas who is having a very bad week; he lost $49,500 on Golden State’s money line in Game 3, then lost $75,000 on the Boston Bruins Thursday.

This person is chasing losses……..Friday he bet $182,000 on the Warriors $-190 to win $95,789 in Game 4.

Another tough night for that gambler. Minus $306,000 in three nights; hope he got free drink tickets, at least.

              7) Baseball stuff:
              — Mariners put OF Mitch Haniger (ruptured testicle) on the IL. Ouch
              — In 2012 there were 2,020 pitchouts in major leagues; last year, there were 350.
              — Relief pitchers have thrown 40.5% of innings this year, with a 4.42 ERA; five years ago, relief pitchers threw 33.5% of IP. with a 3.57 ERA.

Next analytics wave in baseball will find starting pitchers being stretched out longer in starts.

              6) Boston Celtics are in favor of having free agency happen before the draft, which would be interesting. Right now, there are only roughly 10-14 days between the end of the Finals and the draft, so the draft would get pushed back, which would push back the summer league.

              5) Kentucky and UCLA have assistant coaches in Brazil at the FIBA u16 Americas tourney. The quarter-finals of the event started Friday.

              4) Alex, I’d like bad baseball for $400 please:
              — Top of 6th inning, Cardinals down 3-0 at Wrigley, man on first with one out, and Dexter Fowler gets picked off. Why? How? He wasn’t going to steal. Terrible.

              3) Jurors in the Kellen Winslow Jr rape trial sent this message to the judge:

“The jurors could benefit from an explanation as to what being under oath means.

Additionally, how we should follow the law and not what we think the law should mean.”

Sounds like those 12 people aren’t getting along too well.

              • LEADING OFF: Kimbrel warming, Giolito hot, Ohtani vs Kikuchi
                June 7, 2019
                By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Saturday:

                GETTING GOING, PART I

Dallas Keuchel says he doesn't expect to need much time tuning up in the minors before he joins his new team, the Atlanta Braves. The club confirmed Friday night that the 2015 American League Cy Young Award winner had agreed to a one-year contract and said he'd start the next day with Triple-A Gwinnett. During a conference call, Keuchel said he has been pitching seven innings in simulated games in Southern California.

                GETTING GOING, PART II

All-Star closer Craig Kimbrel is expected to report to the Cubs' training facility in Mesa, Arizona, as he ramps up after finalizing a three-year contract with Chicago on Friday that guarantees him $43 million. Kimbrel was optioned to Triple-A, and the Cubs want him working back carefully following his extended free agency.

''We're not going to rush it,'' president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said. ''It's going to be tempting to get him here as soon as possible, but we're trying to plan this thing the right way so that he can be in a position to succeed not just immediately but all the way through October.''

                ROYAL PAIN

Breakout White Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito faces the Royals seeking his seventh victory in seven starts. Giolito (8-1, 2.54) ranks among the majors' best pitchers a year after giving up more earned runs than anybody in the big leagues. The former top prospect is 6-0 with a 1.03 ERA in his last six outings, including a May 28 start against Kansas City when he set a season high with 10 strikeouts.

                NICE TO SEE YOU

Shohei Ohtani's first major league showdown with Yusei Kikuchi is on deck at Angel Stadium. The matchup would pit the AL Rookie of the Year from Los Angeles against Seattle's rookie left-hander. They faced each other five times in Japan's top league.

The 24-year-old Ohtani and the 27-year-old Kikuchi attended the same high school in Japan, but never played on the same team.

Ohtani, who isn't pitching this season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, went into the weekend hitting .250 with five home runs and 20 RBIs. Kikuchi is 3-3 with a 4.43 ERA in 13 starts.

                REMEMBER ME?

Yankees lefty CC Sabathia, who began his big league career with the Indians in 2001, makes his final scheduled start in Cleveland.

Before New York began its weekend series at Progressive Field, the 38-year-old Sabathia stopped into his favorite sandwich shop for an Italian sub and swung by his old house to visit neighbors - and their grown kids - he hadn't seen in a long time. Back in his old neighborhood in suburban Westlake, Sabathia was thrilled to find the outdoor basketball court his late father installed.

Sabathia (3-2, 3.61 ERA), who played eight seasons in Cleveland, will try for his 250th career win.

                29 FOREVER

The Rangers are set to retire Adrian Beltre's No. 29 prior to the nightcap of a doubleheader against Oakland. Beltre retired last offseason after 21 years in the majors, the last eight with Texas. He got 1,277 of his 3,166 hits with the club, most among his four franchises, and also got three of his five Gold Glove Awards in that time.

                • Weekend Watch
                  Joe Williams

                  Saturday, June 8

The Yankees and Indians continue their series at Progressive Field, and the Indians are trying to keep their heads above water due to a bevy of injuries. Of course, New York isn't a team the Tribe should cry to about injuries, as the Yankees have had way more than their fair share of guys heading to the 10-day injured list this season.

LHP CC Sabathia faces his former organization, and he is 0-1 with a 4.70 ERA across the past four starts against the Indians despite a .238 opponent batting average in 23 innings. He is actually winless in six straight outings against the Tribe dating back to June 5, 2013. He hasn't won a game in Cleveland Aug. 24, 2012. The Indians counter with RHP Adam Plutko, and the Yankees are 25-7 in the past 32 games against right-handed starting pitchers while going 7-2 over his past nine road outings vs. RHP. They're 46-20 across the past 66 starts by Sabathia against AL Central foes, but just 1-5 in the past six road outings against a team with a winning record.

The Indians are 4-1 in their past five vs. LHP, while going 6-2 in the past the past eight at Progressive Field against a lefty. They're also a surprising 13-5 in the previous 18 against the AL West, and 9-4 in the past 13 against teams with a winning percentage over .600, including three of the past four this week.

The Nationals continue their four-game series against the Padres, and they're hoping that the third time is a charm. The first two games have resulted in a 5-4 loss, including blowing a 4-0 lead in the series opener on Thursday to spoil a strong effort from LHP Patrick Corbin. They will roll out RHP Max Scherzer (3-5, 3.06 ERA) to face LHP Eric Lauer (5-4, 4.18 ERA) in another decent pitching matchup.

Washington heads into the game 9-4 over the past 13 games, even after losing the first two in this series. However, they're just 6-13 in the past 19 games away from home, while going 1-4 in the past five against National League West opponents and 2-9 in the past 11 against left-handed starters. In addition, while they're 15-6 in Scherzer's past 21 tries against NL West foes, and 40-19 in his past 59 starts on the road, they're just 2-8 in his past 10 starts overall and 1-5 in his past six against teams with a winning overall record. Washington is also just 1-6 in his past seven while working on five days of rest. It isn't so much that he has struggled, but the offensive support for Scherzer has certainly been lacking.

The Padres counter with Lauer, and they're 4-0 over his past four starts. However, they're 0-5 in his past five home outings against teams with a losing record, and 3-9 in his past 12 starts overall against teams with a sub-.500 record. The Padres are also just 0-4 in their past four during Game 3 of a series, while going 2-7 in the past nine at home aginst teams with a road winning percentage of .400 or under. San Diego is also 1-4 in the past five games following a victory, and 6-16 in the past 22 games played on a Saturday.

The over is 6-2-2 in Washington's past 10 games on the road, and 6-1-1 in the past eight starts on the road by Scherzer. The over is also 6-2-2 in the past 10 starts against a team with a winning overall record, and 5-2-3 in his past 10 against teams with a winning overall mark. The over is 6-0-2 in the past eight for the Padres, while going 5-0-1 in the past six at home vs. RHP. The over is 8-1-2 in the past in the past 11 overal against righties, too. The under is 4-1 in Lauer's past five starts at home, but 6-1 in his past seven against losing teams and 5-1-1 in their past seven following a victory.

                  Weather Report
The early-afternoon slate of games do not have any trouble sports, but the mid-afternoon games will be a bit windy. The Reds and Phillies will contend with an 11-14 mph wind blowing in from right field to home plate. There will be a stiff 13-16 mph wind blowing from third base to first base at Comerica Park in Detroit, affecting the Twins and Tigers, particularly right-handed hitters trying to get the ball up in the air.

In the evening slate, the Yankees and Indians will see an 11-14 mph wind blowing straight across from first base to third base, while in Wrigley the Cards and Cubs will see a stiff 10-13 mph wind blowing in from right field to home plate, likely keeping scores down. The good news is that no MLB venue has more than a 15 percent chance of precipitation.

                  Sunday, June 9

Rays LHP Blake Snell and Red Sox LHP Eduardo Rodrigues do battle at Fenway Park on Saturday afternoon, and it should be a good pitching matchup. The Rays are 4-0 in the past four game against American League East clubs, while going 8-2 in the past 10 road outings against a left-handed starting pitcher. They're 8-2 in Snell's past 10 starts against an AL East team, and 20-8 in the past 28 starts against a team with a winning record. They're 15-7 in Snell's past 22 starts, while going 1-4 in his past five on the road. The Red Sox are 13-3 in the past 16 starts against AL East teams, while going 23-6 in the past 29 outings at home. The Red Sox are 5-2 in the past seven starts by Rodriguez against the Rays, too.

The Athletics will use RHP Frankie Montas in their road outing against the very shaky LHP Drew Smyly in Sunday's start, although it wouldn't be a surprise to see an opener in this one for Texas, so be careful. Oakland has posted a 4-0 mark in Montas' past four outings against winning teams, 4-1 in his past five starts overall and 9-4 in his past 13 outings on the road. The A's are also 13-5 in their past 18 on the road vs. LHP, and 37-15 in the past 52 overall against lefties. For the Rangers, they're 12-4 in the past 16 at home, but just 1-4 in the past five outings by Smyly against an AL West opponent.

The Cardinals swept the Cubs in Busch Stadium last week, now the Cubs are looking to avenge that brooming with a series victory against their rivals. RHP Adam Wainwright takes the ball for St. Louis, while the Cubs counter with RHP Kyle Hendricks. St. Louis lost on Friday night, and they're just 1-4 in the past five road outings by Wainwright, too. That bodes well for the Cubs, as does the fact the Cards are 0-5 in Waino's past five road contests against teams with a winning overall mark. The Cubbies are 4-1 in Hendricks' past five home outings, and 7-3 in his past 10 inside the division. They're also 4-0 in his past four at home against winning teams, and 9-1 over his past 10 while working on four days of rest. More importantly, Chicago is a perfect 9-0 over the past nine outings by Hendricks against St. Louis, including 5-0 in his past five at Wrigley.

                  Weather Report
On Sunday, the Reds and Phillies will again see a stiff wind blowing in fromt right field to home plate at a 12-15 mph clip. In New York, the Rockies and Mets will see an 11-14 mph wind blowing from first to third base. The Yankees and Indians will again battle winds from 11-14 mph blowing out to the left-field standing room only area at Progressive Field. The opposite holds true in the Motor City, as the Twins and Tigers battle an 11-14 mph wind blowing in from left field into the face of the batters.

The only venue with rain in the forecast will be in Chicago, as the Cards and Cubs face a 30 percent chance of light showers for the Sunday Night Baseball battle.

                                June 8, 2019
                                By The Associated Press

MILWAUKEE (AP) Zach Davies became the first Milwaukee starter to win his first seven decisions in a season, hanging on for five innings Saturday before the Brewers' bullpen finished off a 5-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Ryan Braun had an RBI single in the fourth that put the Brewers ahead to stay. Mike Moustakas hit his 19th home run and pinch-hitter Manny Pina added a late homer.

Milwaukee moved a season-high nine games over .500 and beat the Pirates for the fifth time in six games this year.

Davies (7-0) gave up seven hits and left with a 4-3 lead. Four relievers blanked the Pirates on one hit, with Josh Hader striking out the side in the ninth for his 15th save.

Pirates starter Jordan Lyles lasted only three innings, giving up three runs on five hits and four walks.

Michael Feliz (2-2) took the loss.

Colin Moran hit his ninth homer of the year for the Pirates. Rookie Bryan Reynolds extended his hitting streak to a major league-high 16 games with a single in the third.

MIAMI (AP) - Julio Teheran pitched six sharp innings, rookie Austin Riley scored the only run and Atlanta edged Miami.

The Braves won despite getting only three hits and improved to 5-0 this season at Marlins Park. Miami had just four hits.

Teheran (4-4) gave up two hits and struck out five. Luke Jackson recorded four outs for his ninth save.

Riley hustled for a leadoff double in the seventh against Trevor Richards (3-6), took third on a flyout and scored on Tyler Flowers' sacrifice fly.

Richards gave up two hits in seven innings.

DETROIT (AP) - JaCoby Jones homered twice and drove in a career-high five runs in Detroit's win over Minnesota.

Christin Stewart also homered for the Tigers, who had lost three straight and 13 of 14 at Comerica Park.

Nick Ramirez (2-0), Detroit's second pitcher in a bullpen game, gave up one run and three hits with three walks in three innings.

Kyle Gibson (6-3) gave up five runs and eight hits with two walks in five innings.

Jones hit a three-run homer in the second and a tw-run homer in the eighth. Stewart led off the bottom of the third with his fifth homer.

                                INDIANS 8, YANKEES 4

CLEVELAND (AP) - Rookie Oscar Mercado hit a two-run homer off CC Sabathia to break a fifth-inning tie and Cleveland defeated New York.

Roberto Perez homered in his fourth straight game for Cleveland. The Indians have won four of five on their homestand against AL division leaders New York and Minnesota.

Didi Gregorius hit a home run in his second game back with New York this season. The Yankees have lost five of six.

Sabathia (3-3), denied the 250th win of his career for the second straight outing, appeared to injure his leg fielding a groundball earlier in the fifth. The 38-year-old left-hander was removed after the fifth, allowing four runs.

Adam Plutko (2-1), called up from Triple-A Columbus before the game, retired 16 of the final 17 hitters he faced following Gregorius' two-run homer in the first. The right-hander sent down the last 10 hitters, giving up two runs in six innings.

                                ORIOLES 4, ASTROS 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Renato Nunez hit his 16th homer, Richie Martin added a two-run shot in the ninth and Baltimore snapped a three-game skid by beating Houston.

Nunez homered in the sixth inning and the Astros tied it in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly, but a solid defensive play by right fielder Anthony Santander ended the threat.

It was still tied in the eighth when Will Harris (1-1) took over for starter Framber Valdez and Hanser Alberto greeted him with a double to left field. Trey Mancini singled, and Nunez reached when Alberto got caught in a rundown between third and home for the first out.

Pedro Severino grounded into fielder's choice, but the Orioles took a 2-1 lead when shortstop Jack Mayfield badly overthrew first base for an error that allowed Mancini to score.

Paul Fry (1-3) struck out two in 1 2/3 innings, and Miguel Castro got the last four outs for his second save.

Valdez yielded five hits and one run in a career-high seven innings in his first start this season after making 14 relief appearances.

                                PHILLIES 4, REDS 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Nick Pivetta struck out six in his first career complete game, Jay Bruce had a two-run single and Philadelphia beat Cincinnati.

Pivetta (4-1) allowed six hits in his third start since his demotion to the minors. The right-hander is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA since being recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

J.T. Realmuto hit a solo homer for the NL East leaders.

Reds starter Tanner Roark (4-5) gave up four runs and six hits in five innings.

Pivetta retired 17 straight batters after allowing two hits to start the game. He hadn't gone more than 7 1/3 innings in his previous 64 career starts.

Nick Senzel led off the game with a double, went to third on Joey Votto's single and scored on Eugenio Suarez's double-play grounder.

BOSTON (AP) - Marco Hernandez hit a key two-run double in his first major league start in over two years, David Price pitched six solid innings in his 300th career start as Boston beat Tampa Bay to salvage a split of a day-night doubleheader.

It was Boston's first home win over the Rays this season after losing the first four meetings, including the opener.

Tampa Bay's four-game winning streak ended.

Price (4-2) gave up a run on five hits, matched his season-high with 10 strikeouts and walked two.

Reliver Colin Poche took the loss in his major league debut, giving up two runs in 1 1/3 innings.

In the opener, Ryan Yarbrough held Boston to an unearned run into the eighth inning and Travis d'Arnaud hit a three-run homer.

Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a solo homer for Boston, which has dropped the first two of a four-game series.

The 27-year-old Yarbrough (5-2) limited Boston to three singles, striking out seven without issuing a walk before Bradley homered off the Pesky Pole in the eighth.

The Rays jumped ahead 4-0 in the second against Josh Smith (0-2).

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Adrian Sampson threw a four-hitter for his first career complete game, and Texas wrapped up a doubleheader sweep over Oakland.

Sampson (5-3) struck out seven and walked one over 109 pitches to win his fifth game in a row.

Danny Santana got the first hit for Texas in the nightcap with a one-out single in the fifth and scored before adding an RBI triple an inning later.

Mark Canha's 10th homer, in the fourth, accounted for the only Oakland run.

In the opener, Tim Federowicz homered in his first big league game this season, Nomar Mazara also went deep.

Jeffrey Springs (4-1) worked three innings in relief of starter Joe Palumbo, the lefty who went four innings in his big league debut after being recalled from Double-A Frisco.

Texas went ahead to stay with a three-run first off Paul Blackburn (0-1), who was called up as Oakland's 26th player for the doubleheader after being in Triple-A Las Vegas all season. The right-hander gave up five runs in three innings.

Between games, Texas celebrated the retirement of the No. 29 jersey of former third baseman Adrian Beltre.

Matt Olson and Josh Phegley homered for the A's.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Lucas Giolito worked into the eighth inning and had a career-high 11 strikeouts to win his seventh consecutive start, outdueling Brad Keller as Chicago beat Kansas City.

Giolito (9-1) allowed three hits and two walks in 7 2/3 innings.

Rookie Eloy Jimenez hit a two-run homer in the second inning off Keller (3-8), who worked eight innings, allowing two runs on five hits, with one walk and four strikeouts.

Alex Colome pitched the ninth for his 13th save in as many chances.

Royals manager Ned Yost was ejected for arguing a strike call to Alex Gordon in the sixth inning.

TORONTO (AP) - Zack Greinke and four relievers combined on a five-hitter, Alex Avila and Kevin Cron hit solo home runs and Arizona topped Toronto.

Nick Ahmed drove in two runs as the Diamondbacks won their third straight.

Greinke (7-2) allowed four hits in six innings to win for the first time in four starts. Matt Andriese pitched the eighth and Zack Godley finished.

Toronto was blanked for the fifth time this season. The Blue Jays have scored two runs or fewer five times in their past seven games. They went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position and left seven men stranded.

Blue Jays right-hander Aaron Sanchez (3-7) allowed five runs and six hits in six innings.

                                METS 5, ROCKIES 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Steven Matz struck out 10, Pete Alonso moved closer to the Mets' rookie home run record and New York beat Colorado.

Matz (5-4) threw 120 pitches in six innings. He gave up two earned runs on six hits and two walks.

The Rockies stranded seven runners against Matz, who struck out Charlie Blackmon, leaving runners at the corners in the sixth.

Alonso led off the seventh with his 21st home run - it came with some drama, too.

Alonso's drive was just beyond the glove of left fielder David Dahl and off the orange line atop the fence. The ball bounced back onto the field, Alonso kept running and he slid into third. An umpire crew review showed it was indeed a home run. Alonso moved within five of matching Darryl Strawberry's rookie record.

Seth Lugo retired all six batters he faced and Edwin Diaz notched his 14th save with a one-hit ninth.

Jon Gray (5-5) allowed four runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out eight over 5 2/3 innings.

                                CARDINALS 9, CUBS 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Pinch-hitter Victor Caratini hit a tiebreaking bases-loaded double in Chicago's four-run sixth inning in a win over St. Louis.

Hitting for starting pitcher Jon Lester with the bases loaded, Caratini lined the first pitch from John Gant to left field. Marcell Ozuna attempted a sliding catch, but the ball dropped and rolled to the wall, allowing three runs to score.

Kyle Schwarber, who had homered in the fourth inning, followed with a double to drive in Caratini, and the Cubs won for the fifth time in six games.

Lester (5-4) was hit hard early, allowing all four St. Louis runs in the first inning on long homers by Ozuna and Harrison Bader. He retired the last 11 hitters he faced in five-hit, six-inning outing.

John Brebbia (1-3), the first of five St. Louis relievers, allowed two runs in 1 1/3 innings and took the loss.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Corey Seager had three of his four hits and three of his four RBIs following intentional walks to Cody Bellinger, and Los Angeles beat San Francisco.

Justin Turner added three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored and pinch-hitter Kyle Garlick started the go-ahead rally in the sixth with his first career hit.

Rich Hill (3-1) allowed two runs in five innings, escaping a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fifth.

Jeff Samardzija (3-5) worked 5 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits, and three earned runs while striking out five and walking two.

Aramis Garcia hit a solo homer and Donovan Solano added an RBI single for the Giants.
