      • LEADING OFF: Yelich, Brewers at Wrigley, Yanks vs Rays
        May 10, 2019
        By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

        SEE YOU IN CHICAGO

In their first trip to Wrigley Field this year, NL MVP Christian Yelich and the Brewers face Cubs left-hander Jose Quintana (4-1, 3.40), who is 4-0 in his past five starts. Gio Gonzalez (0-0, 2.61) makes his third start of the season for second-place Milwaukee, which trails Chicago by one game in the NL Central. The Brewers, who lead the National League with 65 home runs, took two of three from the Cubs at Miller Park in early April after beating them in a one-game tiebreaker for the NL Central title at Wrigley Field last October. Yelich leads the majors with 16 homers, and Milwaukee has won six straight. Chicago has won three in a row and 10 of 11.

        SHOWDOWN AT THE TROP

The top two teams in the AL East square off for the first time this season when the injury-depleted Yankees play at first-place Tampa Bay. Domingo German (6-1, 2.35 ERA) faces Rays right-hander Tyler Glasnow (6-0, 1.47) in a matchup between pitchers among those tied for the major league lead in wins. Assessing the three-game series at Tropicana Field, New York manager Aaron Boone said: ''I don't really see it as where we stack up.''

        HEADY DECISION

The Giants will be without star catcher Buster Posey when they return home to face budding Cincinnati ace Luis Castillo (3-1, 1.97 ERA). Posey was placed on the seven-day concussion list Thursday after a foul ball hit his helmet Sunday. He played Tuesday against Colorado. ''They are going to take extra time to find out how I am,'' Posey said Thursday. ''When they examined me (Wednesday), they felt I should have felt more normal after three days. When you are dealing with the brain, you've got to be cautious.'' It is Posey's second stint on the concussion list - he missed seven games last time in 2017.

        WELCOME ABOARD

Jed Lowrie is expected to come off the injured list and make his Mets debut at home against Miami. The veteran infielder signed a $20 million, two-year contract with New York following an All-Star season in Oakland. But he was injured early in spring training and has been sidelined all year due to a capsule sprain in his left knee. Lowrie was 2 for 23 during a six-game rehab assignment with Class A St. Lucie and Triple-A Syracuse.

        • Nats sign OF Gerardo Parra to 1-year deal
          May 9, 2019
          By The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) The Washington Nationals signed outfielder Gerardo Parra to a one-year deal Thursday and the left-handed hitter was available off the bench for the opener of a four-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

To make room on the active roster, outfielder Andrew Stevenson was placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to May 7, with back spasms. The Nationals also designated right-hander Jimmy Cordero for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.

Nationals manager Dave Martinez said the 32-year-old Parra would start against right-handed pitchers on occasion, while also being a pinch-hit option. Parra elected to become a free agent Tuesday after he was designated for assignment by the San Francisco Giants and cleared waivers.

Parra was batting just .198 with one home runs and six RBIs in 30 games with the Giants this season. He's a career .277 hitter with 80 home runs and 480 RBIs over 11 seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Milwaukee Brewers, Baltimore Orioles, Colorado Rockies and Giants.

            • German wins 7th, Yankees beat Rays 4-3 in AL East showdown
              May 10, 2019
              By The Associated Press

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Domingo German became the majors' first seven-game winner, Gio Urshela got a key hit set up by a pair of odd bounces and the New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 on Friday night.

The injury-filled Yankees pulled within a half-game of the AL East-leading Rays in the first of 19 meetings between the teams this season.

German (7-1) was matched up against Tyler Glasnow (6-1), who left in the sixth inning with right forearm tightness.

Glasnow struck out nine in 5 1/3 innings. He signaled for a trainer after striking out Gleyber Torres and was pulled.

German allowed three runs and five hits over five innings. Aroldis Chapman, the fourth Yankees reliever, worked the ninth for his ninth save.

Home runs by Austin Meadows and Ji-Man Choi gave the Rays a 3-2 lead entering the sixth.

Gary Sanchez opened the Yankees sixth with an infield single on a popup that struck the highest of four overhanging catwalks - approximately 185 feet high - and fell in the infield as Tampa Bay players scrambled to catch the carom.

Clint Frazier followed with a single and Torres fanned, finishing Glasnow. Emilio Pagan relieved and Miguel Andujar hit a grounder that took a crooked hop off the mound and went for an infield single that loaded the bases. Urshela then delivered a two-run single for a 4-3 lead.

              RED SOX 14, MARINERS 1

BOSTON (AP) - Mitch Moreland hit a three-run home run, Rafael Devers and Andrew Benintendi each added a solo homer, and Boston moved above .500 for the first time this season with a win over Seattle.

Boston (20-19) has won nine of 11, scoring 80 runs during the stretch. Seattle (20-21) lost for the 10th time in 12 games and is under .500 for the first time since the end of the 2017 season.

Eduardo Rodriguez (4-2) pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing five hits and striking out five to pick up his third win in four starts.

Rookie Erik Swanson (1-4) took the loss, allowing seven hits and seven runs over 4 2/3 innings. It marked the latest rough outing for a Mariners' pitching staff that has given up 11 or more runs four times in 12 games.

              METS 11, MARLINS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Amed Rosario hit a grand slam during an eight-run outburst that marked the Mets' biggest first inning in three decades, and New York routed Miami.

Michael Conforto and Jeff McNeil also homered for the previously slumping Mets, who set a season best with 15 hits and matched their high for runs. Zack Wheeler (3-2) struck out 11 over seven innings, reaching double digits for the third time in four outings.

After totaling only 15 runs on a 1-5 road trip, the Mets broke loose back home against Pablo Lopez (2-5) and the major league-worst Marlins (10-28). New York sent 13 batters to the plate in the first, with J.D. Davis and Robinson Cano each getting two of the team's eight hits.

              BREWERS 7, CUBS 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Gio Gonzalez pitched two-hit ball into the sixth inning and Ryan Braun homered, helping Milwaukee beat Chicago for its season-high seventh straight victory.

Gonzalez outdueled Jose Quintana to help Milwaukee move into a virtual tie with Chicago for the NL Central lead. Yasmani Grandal and Jesus Aguilar each drove in two runs, and Hernan Perez backed Gonzalez with a couple nice plays at second base.

The Brewers (24-16) moved a season-high eight games over .500 in their first visit to Wrigley Field since they topped the Cubs 3-1 in the division tiebreaker game Oct. 1.

Chicago (22-14) had won 10 of 11, but it was shut down by Gonzalez (1-0) and five relievers. Quintana (4-2) allowed three runs and four hits in 6 2/3 innings in his first loss since April 5.

              ASTROS 3, RANGERS 0

HOUSTON (AP) - Justin Verlander pitched one-hit ball for seven dominant innings, right fielder Josh Reddick made another leaping catch and Houston beat Texas.

Jake Marisnick homered in the third, and Yuli Gurriel and Robinson Chirinos hit back-to-back solo home runs with two outs in the seventh.

Astros star second baseman Jose Altuve exited in the first inning with left hamstring discomfort after beating out an infield single. He was listed as day to day.

The only hit off Verlander (6-1) was a single by Asdrubal Cabrera to lead off the fifth. The right-hander struck out eight, walked two and hit a batter.

Ryan Pressly threw a perfect eighth, and Roberto Osuna pitched around a single in the ninth for his 10th save, helped by Reddick.

              TWINS 6, TIGERS 0

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jake Odorizzi stretched his scoreless streak to 20 innings with seven frames of one-hit ball, Max Kepler and Mitch Garver homered, and Minnesota beat Detroit.

Odorizzi (5-2) retired his last 20 batters after a first-inning double by Christin Stewart, striking out five without a walk while lowering his ERA to a career-best 2.32.

The Twins (24-12) have the best record in the majors, backed by a surging rotation and a lineup that's suddenly full of sluggers.

Garver, part of a trio of catchers who have collectively been the most productive offensively in baseball this season, hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning off Tyson Ross (1-5) for his eighth shot in 21 games. Kepler went deep in the fifth.

The Tigers, who were shutout for the second straight game and an American League-most fifth time this season, have the second-fewest home runs in the majors with just one by 11-time All-Star Miguel Cabrera.

BLUE JAYS 4, WHITE SOX 3

TORONTO (AP) - Randal Grichuk hit a three-run homer, Teoscar Hernandez added a solo shot and Toronto snapped a season-worst five-game losing streak with a win over Chicago.

Grichuk's two-out blast in the first inning was his sixth of the season and came off starter Dylan Covey (0-2).

Covey allowed four runs and three hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Toronto's scheduled starter, right-hander Clay Buchholz, was scratched and placed on the 10-day injured list because of a sore shoulder. Right-hander Daniel Hudson opened for Toronto and allowed a run in the first on back-to-back doubles by Yoan Moncada and Jose Abreu.

Chicago's Tim Anderson hit a solo homer in the fifth, and the White Sox cut it to 4-3 on Leurys Garcia's RBI groundout in the seventh.

Joe Biagini (2-1) struck out Moncada for the final out of the seventh. Ken Giles got his ninth save in 10 chances.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Adam Frazier opened the game with a homer, Starling Marte drove in the game-winner and Trevor Williams allowed one run in seven solid innings as Pittsburgh defeated St. Louis.

Marte's RBI single off of Andrew Miller (1-2) broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth and helped the Pirates snap a two-game skid.

Williams (2-1) stranded seven runners through the first four innings, and pitched around two fielding errors in the fourth inning. He allowed nine hits and limited the Cardinals to one hit in seven at-bats with runners in scoring position.

Felipe Vazquez struck out Paul Goldschmidt to cap a perfect ninth and earn his 11th save.

Adam Wainwright went a season-high seven innings and retired the final 10 batters he faced. He struck out eight - five looking - and allowed five hits and no walks.

Trevor Cahill (2-3) pitched six innings, allowing two runs and four hits to win for the first time in five starts since April 8.

Trey Mancini and Chris Davis homered for the Orioles, whose 5-14 home record is the worst in the big leagues.

Gordon's solo shot in the fifth inning was the 1,500th hit of his career. It was also his fifth career multihomer game and first since August 20, 2016.

Jake Diekman worked his eighth consecutive scoreless outing, and Ian Kennedy pitched a perfect ninth. The Royals' bullpen threw four hitless innings and struck out eight.

Phillies starter Jake Arrieta (4-3) went five-plus innings, giving up four runs and seven hits.

Bryce Harper walked three times and scored Philadelphia's only run of the game, coming home on Odubel Herrera's RBI grounder in the fourth.

                        • Weekend Watch
                          Joe Williams

                          Saturday, May 11

The Yankees will roll out LHP CC Sabathia at Tropicana Field against the Rays on Saturday. That's a good and bad thing. The Yankes are 4-1 over his past five starts, and 7-3 in his past 10 appearances on a Saturday, for whatever that is worth. However, they're also just 2-5 across his past seven against a winning team, and 1-4 in his past five on the road against sides with a winning overall record. The Rays have handled the twig well against left-handed starters, going 8-3 in their past 11. They're also 13-6 in the past 19 at home vs. LHP. However, Tampa Bay is just 1-7 in their past eight at home against Sabathia, while going 2-10 in his past 12 starts overall against the rotund lefty. The under is also 5-1 in Sabathia's past six road stars against the Rays, while going 5-2 in his past seven overall. The under is 12-5 in the past 17 meetings in this series, too.

The Reds and Giants do battle in the Bay Area, and the stay hasn't been nice for Cincinnati so far. They lost two of their three games from the Athletics in their interleague battle across the Oakland-Bay Bridge, including being no-hit by RHP Mike Fiers on Tuesday. They will turn to RHP Anthony DeSclafani, the winning pitcher in their 12-4 rout of the Giants on Monday afternoon in the Queen City. In fact, DeSclafani has been a bit of a good luck charm for the Red Legs, with Cincinnati winning in each of his past four outings dating back to April 14. However, the Giants have also been hot with RHP Jeff Samardzija on the hill, going 5-1 in his past six outings. However, the Giants are just 5-11 in their past 16 at home vs. RHP, and 7-16 in their past 23 tries against pitchers with a 1.15 WHIP or less.

It's a nice pitching matchup on the left coast when RHP Max Scherzer and RHP Walker Buehler hookup at Dodger Stadium. Things haven't exactly gone according to plan for Scherzer during the early going, as he is a poor 1-4 with a 3.78 ERA. However, chalk to record up to a lack of run support, as he still has a .292 on-base percentage against and a solid 1.17 WHIP while turning in three consecutive quality starts. Oddly enough, Buehler has a much poorer ERA at 4.95, but he has a perfect 4-0 record. That's baseball. The Vanderbilt product also has just two quaility starts over seven outings this season. The Nats are 0-5 in Scherzer's past five outings, and 0-4 in his past four against winning teams, but again, think offensive support, or lack thereof. The Dodgers are 4-0 in Buehler's past four at home, and 7-2 in his past nine overall.

                          Weather Report
The winds will be whipping from first base to third base at a 12-15 mph clip at Target Field, knocking down fly balls off of the bats of left-handed hitters. In Denver, no snow this time around, but the Padres and Rockies will experience a stiff wind blowing in from straightaway center field into the face of the batters at a 10-13 mph clip, tailing off by the later innings.

At Busch Stadium in St. Louis, there is a 50-50 shot of rain for the Pirates-Cardinals game, so expect to see the tarpaulin come out at some point, and perhaps even a postponement if the weather gets too bad. These teams face each other frequently, so there isn't as much urgency to force the game to go on. The Angels and Orioles will also experience some weather, with a 30-40 percent chance of showers called for during their game. They might be able to dance through the raindrops, however.

                          Sunday, May 12

It's a battle of lefties at Target Field for the Tigers-Twins series finale. LHP Daniel Norris has been decent, going 1-1 with a 3.81 ERA overall, although the Tigers have lost in each of his past three appearances. Chalk that up to poor run support in the past two, as they're averaging just 2.5 runs per game over his past two outings. He has failed to last longer than five innings in each of his four appearances, as he is still getting stretched out after starting out in the 'pen. So look for the Tigers bullpen to get called upon by the sixth inning. LHP Martin Perez goes for the Twinkies, and what a find he has been. He is 5-0 with a 2.83 ERA and .310 OBP against, with the Twins a perfect 4-0 in his past four outings. He enters with three straight quality starts, and he hasn't allowed a run in his past two outings (15 total innings). The 'under' is 3-0 in his past three, and 4-1 over the past five appearances.

The Phillies and Royals have two righties, RHP Vince Velasquez and RHP Jakob Junis, toeing the slab on Sunday. We'll see wind knocking down balls from left-handed hitters (see below), so that's good news for both of these guys. It might be especially helpful to Junis, who has allowed eight homers in just 44 innings over his eight outings. He sits at 3-3 with a 5.52 ERA and .357 opponent on-base percentage, and he has turned in just one quality start over his past six outings. While Junis is 2-1 at home this season, he has a terrible 5.64 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and .350 OBP against. For Velasquez, he is just 1-2 overall, but he has a solid 3.86 ERA and 1.39 WHIP. He has actually been less hittable on the road, going 1-1 with a 3.32 ERA as opposed to a 5.19 ERA at home. The under has cashed in six straight appearances by Velasquez, too.

On Sunday night the Brewers and Cubs will lock horns in the nationally televised game of the week. RHP Jhoulys Chacin takes the ball for the Brew Crew, and it's been an odyssey for him so far. He is 3-3 with an eye-sore 5.03 ERA, although his WHIP is still a decent 1.27. He has been a little better lately, going 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA across 15 innings over his past three starts, and his WHIP is even better at 1.07. The Brewers are just 2-4 across his past six outings, and the under is 6-1 over his past seven. The Cubs counter with LHP Jon Lester, who is 2-1 with a sparkling 1.41 ERA and 1.03 WHIP. He has been untouchable lately, going 1-1 with a 0.50 ERA and 0.78 WHIP over 18 innings across his past three outings. He also hasn't allowed a home run in the past three starts, no has he allowed a long ball in his 13 innings at Wrigley Field this season. Despite his outstanding numbers, the Cubs are still just 4-2 in his six outings, and the over is surprisingly 4-1 across his past five.

                          Weather Report
The forecast for the Angels-Orioles finale on Sunday looks ugly. There is a 50-70 percent chance of rain for the early afternoon, although the rain is expected to taper off in Charm City by the late afternoon. They might be able to squeeze this one in, but expect heavy delays. The same holds true for the Marlins-Mets finale, with rain in the forecast all afternoon. These NL East combatants see each other frequently, so a postponement and make-up day-night doubleheader later in the season wouldn't be a surprise.

The rest of the MLB venues appear to be rain-free, but wind will be a factor for the Phillies-Royals interleague series finale at Kauffman Stadium. The winds will be gusting anywhere from 10-13 mph out to right field, good for left-handed hitters especially.

The Nationals have lost the last five games that ace Max Scherzer has started. The three-time Cy Young Award winner is 1-4 with a 3.78 ERA overall this year. The most consecutive team losses in Scherzer starts is six, starting in 2009 when he played for Arizona and ending in 2010 when he pitched for Detroit.

Scherzer next starts at Dodger Stadium against Walker Buehler (4-0, 4.95).

                            SAVE SOME FOR ME

One night after busting loose for their biggest first inning in 30 years (eight runs), the Mets look to give Jacob deGrom (2-4, 3.60 ERA) some offensive support as well for a change.

The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner has lost four straight decisions, and New York hasn't scored in either of his last two games. It's a pattern that persisted last year, when deGrom went 10-9 despite a big league-low 1.70 ERA. This time, he takes on Sandy Alcantara (1-3, 4.93) and the major league-worst Marlins at Citi Field.

                            GIANT PAINS

The Reds will try again to tee off against Giants right-hander Jeff Samardzija. Eugenio Suarez, Jesse Winker and Derek Dietrich tagged Samardzija for three homers on three pitches in the first inning Sunday, though Samardzija settled to throw five innings of four-run ball and San Francisco rallied to win 6-5. The Reds have scored six or more runs just six times this season, and three of those came during a four-game split with San Francisco last week.

                            BIG BEEF

Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia faces the Rays for the first time since being ejected for plunking Jesus Sucre during a game last September. Sabathia was tossed two innings short of meeting a $500,000 performance bonus in his final start of the season, though New York later gave him the bonus anyway.

Sucre is no longer with the Rays, but Sabathia's gripe was with the entire team - he stood and yelled into Tampa Bay's dugout after the ejection, upset that Andrew Kittredge had thrown a pitch near the head of Yankees catcher Austin Romine.

                            MOVING MAN

Catcher Travis d'Arnaud joins his third big league team this month after being traded from the Los Angeles Dodgers to Tampa Bay. The Rays got him for $100,000 - the AL East leaders have catchers Mike Zunino and Michael Perez on the injured list.

D'Arnaud was traded a week after the Dodgers signed him following his release by the New York Mets. The 30-year-old d'Arnaud was 0 for 1 in one game for the Dodgers after going 2 for 23 in 10 games for the Mets.
