  • Snell shuts down D-Backs, Pham hits grand slam as Rays roll
    May 6, 2019
    By The Associated Press

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell took a perfect game into the sixth inning and Tommy Pham hit his first career grand slam, leading the Tampa Bay Rays over the Arizona Diamondbacks 12-1 on Monday night.

Snell (3-3) rebounded from allowing a career-high seven runs over three innings of an 8-2 loss at Kansas City last week to hold the Diamondbacks without a hit until Ildemaro Vargas singled with two outs in the sixth. Snell got out of the inning and finished with nine strikeouts in an 83-pitch outing.

Chaz Roe relieved to start the seventh and Casey Sadler allowed an unearned run in the ninth to finish a two-hitter before 8,124, the lowest at Tropicana Field since September 2017.

Pham's grand slam off Merrill Kelly (3-3) finished a five-run second inning that put the AL East leaders up 6-0.

    WHITE SOX 9, INDIANS 1

CLEVELAND (AP) - Tim Anderson chased Trevor Bauer after the All-Star tweeted a playful message to Anderson earlier in the day, Yoan Moncada had a two-run homer and four RBIs, and Chicago routed Cleveland to stop a three-game losing streak.

Bauer (4-2) matched career highs by allowing eight runs and seven earned runs in five-plus innings, and his ERA rose from 2.45 to 3.42.

Anderson chased Bauer with a two-run single in the sixth.

Ivan Nova (1-3) allowed one run and eight hits in seven innings for his first win since beating Milwaukee for Pittsburgh on Sept. 21.

    REDS 12, GIANTS 4

CINCINNATI (AP) - Nick Senzel hit a leadoff homer after a swarm of bees finally left home plate, and the rookie connected again his next time up, leading Cincinnati past San Francisco.

The wild game included a record-tying four Reds getting plunked in one inning. Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval pitched the eighth and also hit a batter.

The first pitch was delayed 18 minutes as bees swarmed above the backstop screen, prompting umpires and players to keep a safe distance before the bees flew away.

Senzel connected on the second pitch by Drew Pomeranz (1-4) and homered again in the second inning for a 6-0 lead.

Anthony DeSclafani (2-1) gave up four runs, including Sandoval's three-run homer, in six innings.

    YANKEES 7, MARINERS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - New York pounced on Seattle's Felix Hernandez, building a big cushion for CC Sabathia in a showdown of acclaimed veterans.

Luke Voit, Brett Gardner and Thairo Estrada homered off Hernandez while New York gave Sabathia a 6-0 lead after two innings and held on for its 12th win in 16 games. Hernandez (1-3) settled in after that, completing five innings of seven-run ball.

Domingo Santana and Dee Gordon homered off Sabathia (2-1), but the oversized lefty limited Seattle to three runs over five innings.

    BREWERS 5, NATIONALS 3

MILWAUKEE (AP) - A long night and day of travel for Washington got even worse when it wasted a pair of leads, made four errors and lost to Milwaukee.

The Nationals' charter flight was delayed eight hours as the plane sat on the tarmac at Philadelphia because of mechanical problems Sunday night. They finally got off the plane about 3 a.m. and returned to their hotel, then headed to Milwaukee on Monday and arrived after noon.

Ben Gamel, Christian Yelich and Yasmani Grandal hit consecutive singles off Dan Jennings (0-2) starting the seventh, with Grandal driving in the tying run.

Alex Claudio (1-1) won despite allowing a home run by Adam Eaton that put Washington ahead 3-2 in the seventh.

Junior Guerra struck out two in a perfect ninth for his second save.

    TWINS 8, BLUE JAYS 0

TORONTO (AP) - Martin Perez and two relievers combined on a three-hitter, Eddie Rosario hit his AL-leading 12th home run and Minnesota blanked Toronto.

Jason Castro homered and had three RBIs before leaving with a sore right elbow after he was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning.

Perez (5-0) won his fourth straight start. The left-hander allowed two hits, both singles, in seven innings, his second straight scoreless outing.

Rosario chased Marcus Stroman (1-5) with a two-out solo drive in the fifth.

    CARDINALS 6, PHILLIES 0

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Miles Mikolas pitched seven stellar innings and Yadier Molina hit one of three home runs as St. Louis beat Philadelphia.

Matt Carpenter and Paul DeJong also went deep as the Cardinals snapped a four-game skid. Mikolas (4-2) allowed only three hits in his second-longest outing this season.

John Brebbia and Jordan Hicks finished the five-hitter.

The Cardinals chased starter Vince Velasquez (1-2) in the fifth when he gave up two homers sandwiched around a single. He allowed five runs on four hits and five walks.

    ORIOLES 4, RED SOX 1

BALTIMORE (AP) - Jonathan Villar hit a grand slam, John Means handcuffed Boston's torrid offense over seven innings and Baltimore beat Boston.

Villar connected in the second inning off Josh Smith (0-1), who was making his first start with Boston. The drive came after Villar was robbed of a first-inning double when a fan reached over the 7-foot wall and interfered with left fielder J.D. Martinez's effort to make a catch.

Villar's second career slam was more than enough support for Means (4-3), who allowed one run and three hits, striking out four and walking none.

    ASTROS 6, ROYALS 4

HOUSTON (AP) - George Springer, Carlos Correa and Robinson Chirinos each homered to lead Houston past Kansas City.

Springer opened the first with his 11th home run of the season, including three leadoff drives. He added an RBI double in the eighth.

Gerrit Cole (3-4) yielded four runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.

Roberto Osuna pitched the ninth for his eighth save.

Jakob Junis (3-3) allowed five runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.

When the Rockets first came into the NBA, they were the San Diego Rockets.

        ***********************

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

        13) From metsblog.com:
”These baseballs suck. They’re more slick and the seams are more smooth and hard to grip.”

That is a major league relief pitcher, talking about this year’s batch of baseballs.

Noah Syndergaard told reporters last week that gripping a baseball on a cold night has felt like trying to throw an ice cube.

From Robert Arthur, who provides pitch-tracking information in every ballpark:
”As baseballs become more aerodynamic, they travel further given a certain initial velocity. A deep fly ball that might have been caught at the warning track can instead (with just a three percent change in drag) go into the first row of the stands (for a home run).”

So if you’re wondering why home runs are on the increase again, this is part of why.

        12) Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer will be a minority owner of the new Seattle team in the NHL, which will begin play in the fall of 2021.

Bruckheimer produced the CSI shows, Without a Trace as well as numerous movies, like Top Gun and Beverly Hills Cop.

        11) Of the 32 teams in the NFL, 15 will have a play-caller this season who is in his first full year calling plays for that team.

        10) Sunday afternoon against the Giants, Eugenio Suarez, Jesse Winker and Derek Dietrich of the Reds hit back-to-back-to-back homers on three straight pitches off Jeff Samardzija.

Last team to do this was the Dodgers on June 12, 2007: Wilson Betemit, Matt Kemp and Hong-Chih Kuo all homered off the Mets’ John Maine.

        9) This year the Reds are celebrating their team’s 150th anniversary; they’re wearing 15 different sets of throwback uniforms this season, to commemorate various eras in their long history. Sunday’s uniforms were actually dark blue, with red lettering.

        8) Max Homa won the Wells Fargo golf tournament this past weekend; coming into the week, Homa was ranked 417th in the world. Now he is a millionaire and exempt on tour for the next 2.5 years, so a big four days for him. Golf is a really, really competitive sport.

        7) Baseball injuries:
        — Red Sox put P David Price (elbow) on IL.
        — Nationals put 1B Matt Adams (shoulder) on IL.
        — Mets put P Jason Vargas (hamstring) on IL.

        6) When the Red Sox go to the White House Thursday to be honored for winning the World Series, manager Alex Cora, who is from Puerto Rico, won’t be there. He isn’t happy how the government responded to Hurricane Maria last year:

“Although the government of the United States has helped, there is still a long way to go, that is OUR reality. I have continually used my voice so that we Puerto Ricans are not forgotten and my absence is not different. Therefore, at this moment, I do not feel comfortable celebrating in the White House.”

David Price, Mookie Betts and Rafael Devers will also be no-shows Thursday.

        5) How has Brewers’ CF Lorenzo Cain never won a Gold Glove? Guy plays a great centerfield. He made another great catch against the Mets Sunday, crashing into the fence in right-center but hanging onto the ball.

        4) Interesting trade in our fantasy league Sunday night; this is a 16-team dynasty league, where you keep your roster from year-to-year.

Team A traded Mike Trout, Max Scherzer and Robbie Ray. In return, they got Yordan Alvarez, Keston Hiura and Brendan Rodgers, three of the best minor league prospects, all at the AAA level. Was really surprised to see Trout get dealt; wonder if the Angels will ever do that?

Team A is the defending champ in our league but is 0-4-1 so far this season, so they decided to build for the future; time will tell who won this trade.
        3) I wasted a decent amount of space this spring writing about the AAF, so I won’t be writing a lot about the XFL until it proves it has staying power, but the XFL did sign a TV deal with ABC and FOX this week. All 43 games will be shown somewhere on network TV next spring.

        2) College basketball transfer portal:
        — Clemson poached grad transfer Curran Scott (8.9 ppg LY) from Tulsa.
        — UNLV F Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua jumps from UNLV to Baylor.

        1) Oakland A’s on Sundays so far this season:
        — W2-1 vs Angels.
        — L9-8 @ Houston— Led 8-6 in 8th inning.
        — L8-7 @ Texas— Led 7-4 in 8th inning.
        — L5-4 vs Toronto— Blue Jays swept series in Oakland.
        — L5-4 @ Toronto (11)— Led 4-1 in the 11th.
        — L5-3 @ Pittsburgh (13)— Led 3-1 in the 13th.

                  • LEADING OFF: Ohtani nears Angels return, biding Bumgarner
                    May 6, 2019
                    By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                    OHTANI ON DECK

AL Rookie of the Year Shohei Ohtani will join the Angels in Detroit this week and could be set to make his season debut. The two-way star has been recovering from Tommy John surgery and isn't expected to pitch this year. But his swing is fine and Los Angeles intends to use Ohtani as its designated hitter.

The Angels say Ohtani will wear an arm guard when he bats and runs the bases. The 24-year-old hit .285 with 22 home runs last season.

                    INTERESTING

San Francisco lefty Madison Bumgarner (1-4, 3.92 ERA) starts at Coors Field, facing the only team he's beaten this season. He pitched seven innings at home to top Colorado on April 13.

With each outing for the last-place Giants, speculation increases they might consider trading the 29-year-old Bumgarner. The 2014 World Series MVP has made seven starts this season.

                    BRIGHT SPOT

The Marlins went into this week on pace for 118 losses and their worst record ever. Club CEO Derek Jeter says he's not happy, a sentiment echoed by manager Don Mattingly.

Caleb Smith, however, has been exceptional. The 27-year-old lefty is 3-0 with a 2.00 ERA in six starts, striking out 45 in 36 innings. Smith will try to boost his record when he starts at Wrigley Field against Jon Lester and the Cubs.

                    MOVING AROUND

Cody Bellinger can expect to see a lot of time in the outfield for the Dodgers after coming back from a dislocated shoulder. He hurt himself diving for a ball at first base, and Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts says it ''makes the most sense'' to keep Bellinger in the outfield for a while.

Also, newly acquired Travis d'Arnaud will work out at first base and left field. A catcher with the New York Mets, d'Arnaud will practice at other spots to give the Dodgers extra versatility.

The Dodgers could need help in the outfield with A.J. Pollock out for at least six weeks after surgery to clear up an infection in his right elbow.

                        • STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTERS

                          STREAKING

Caleb Smith, Miami Marlins (3-0, 2.00 ERA, $337)
: Miami might be struggling this year but that's no fault of Smith who has been outstanding with a BAA of .168, WHIP of 0.83 and 45 strikeouts through 36 innings. Miami is just 6-22 in games that Smith hasn't pitched this year, but have gone 4-0 in Smith's last four starts. Over those four games, Smith allowed just three runs and fanned 30 batters in 25 innings.

Tonight Smith and the Marlins face off against Jon Lester and the Cubs. Lester is 2-1 with a 1.73 ERA and 0.96 WHIP. It could be a low-scoring battle at Wrigley field.

                          SLUMPING

Collin McHugh, Houston Astros (3-3, 4.97 ERA, $-264):
McHugh started the season on fire, going 3-1 with a 1.96 ERA and 0.83 WHIP. Since then he's gone off the rails. In his last three starts the Astros are 0-3 and McHugh has given up 16 earned runs and six homers in 15 innings.

McHugh and the Astros are massive -230 favorites against the Kansas City Royals tonight, with the Houston runline priced at +100. Houston has covered the runline as favorites in each of their last three games (outscoring their opponents by 20 runs in that span) but could need a much better performance from McHugh to keep that streak going.

                          3 STRIKES

                          DRINK YOU UNDER THE TABLE

The Milwaukee Brewers could be the hottest team in the National League, winning four in a row and eight of their last 11 games. The Brew Crew have stacked $487 and change for loyal Milwaukee backers betting $100 a pop during that span, and if you also rode the Under in this winning charge you’d have plenty of extra beer money.

The Brewers have stayed below the total in six of their previous nine outings and outside of two 11-run concessions at Colorado last week, have limited opponents to three runs or less in six of the eight remaining outings, including a total of just nine runs during their current four-game tear.

In a different move, manager Craig Counsell (who has done this before) will use an “opener” in the form of Adrian Houser versus Washington Tuesday, hoping to snap starter Freddy Peralta out of his first-inning funk. Houser will likely toss the first inning or two before handing the ball to Peralta, who has a hulking 27.00 ERA in the opening frame but settles down for a 0.90 ERA in the second and third innings. Tuesday’s total opened 8.5 and has been bet down to eight runs.

                          BUCCOS STOPS HERE

The Pittsburgh Pirates have laid waste to American League foes when they cross over into the Senior Circuit. So far in 2019, the Bucs are 6-1 versus AL opponents after taking two of three games from the Oakland A’s last week and beating Tuesday’s opponent, the Texas Rangers, in two meetings on April 30 and May 1.

That interleague success is carried over from last season, in which the Pirates finished with a 15-5 record versus the American League – best in the NL. Interleague play has lit a fire under Pittsburgh in 2019, with the club plating 4.7 runs per outing versus the AL – more than a run extra compared to its average production on the season – leading to a 5-2 Over/Under count in those games. The Pirates are -138 home favorites hosting the Rangers with the total at 8.5 runs.

                          DANA AND THE DINGERS

Fans at Yankee Stadium will want to keep their heads up when the Bronx Bombers welcome the Seattle Mariners today. Not only does Seattle lead the big leagues in home runs (70) but home plate umpire Dana DeMuth is one of the top Over umps (5-2 O/U), with an average of 3.57 home runs hit per game with him calling the balls and strikes.

Add to Seattle’s power and DeMuth’s tendency to drum up dingers, the fact that Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka has allowed at least one home run in five starts (six total) and has served up nine round-trippers in his last 10 outings going back to last season. Prop bettors can look to Mariners slugger Jay Bruce and his total bases odds, with 4-plus priced at +300, or his home run prop price, which is also +300. Bruce to hit two homers is +1,400. Just sayin’.

                            • Ohtani goes 0 for 4 in return as Angels top Tigers
                              May 8, 2019
                              By The Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) Shohei Ohtani went 0 for 4 with an RBI groundout and walked once in his season debut as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Detroit Tigers 5-2 Tuesday night.

The Angels activated the AL Rookie of the Year from the injured list and looking very eager to make an impact, Ohtani swung so hard at times that his helmet flew off his head.

The 24-year-old two-way player isn't expected to pitch this year as he recovers from Tommy John surgery in October. But the Angels, who are under .500, are hoping Ohtani can provide a boost as their designated hitter.

Griffin Canning (1-0) earned the win in his second career start, giving up two runs and four hits over 5 1/3 innings while striking out seven. Hansel Robles pitched the ninth for his third save in as many chances.

Daniel Norris (1-1) took the loss.

                              CUBS 5, MARLINS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Kris Bryant hit a tiebreaking, three-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning, lifting the Chicago Cubs over Miami.

With runners on the corners, Bryant drove a 1-2 pitch from Adam Conley (1-4) through a strong wind and into the bleachers in left-center for his third career game-ending homer.

Albert Almora Jr. also connected as the Cubs won for the eighth time in nine games. Steve Cishek (1-1) worked a scoreless ninth for the victory.

                              YANKEES 5, MARINERS 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Cameron Maybin narrowly beat right fielder Jay Bruce's throw home on DJ LeMahieu's game-ending, ninth-inning single, capping New York's three-run rally.

Gio Urshela hit a tying, two-run off Anthony Swarzak (2-2) to begin the late comeback.

Joe Harvey (1-0) pitched out of a jam in the ninth, getting his first big league win.

The Yankees have won 13 of 17. Seattle lost for the eighth time in nine games, dropping to .500 (19-19) after opening at 13-2.

                              PHILLIES 11, CARDINALS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Bryce Harper hit a grand slam, his first with the Phillies, and Rhys Hoskins added four hits, including a homer, to spark Philadelphia.

Harper's homer capped a six-run second inning. Philadelphia took advantage of two errors and two walks as all six runs were unearned.

Aaron Nola (3-0) allowed three hits in six innings, giving up one run. St. Louis starter Dakota Hudson (2-3) gave up eight runs in five innings.

Alonso celebrated his monster homer with a big bat flip. The shot, his 11th, came a night after Alonso struck out twice against Padres rookie Chris Paddack, who said he was ''coming for'' the Mets first baseman because he had won the NL's Player of the Month Award for March and April.

Alonso finished with three hits and four RBIs.

Alonso's homer gave the Mets a 7-5 lead. San Diego rallied for one run against Edwin Diaz in the bottom of the inning before he got Hunter Renfroe to ground out with the bases loaded to earn his ninth save.

Seth Lugo (3-0) pitched two innings for the win.

Washington star Anthony Rendon returned to the lineup after missing 14 games because of a bruised left elbow caused when he was hit by a pitch. His first time up, he was plunked in the upper ribcage.

With two on and two outs in the seventh, Rendon was called out on strikes and immediately turned to argue with plate umpire CB Bucknor. Rendon pointed with his bat to a spot in the dirt off the plate before being ejected.

Houser, making his second spot start of the season, pitched two innings before giving way to Freddy Peralta (2-1), who didn't allow a run over five innings.

Stephen Strasburg (3-2) struck out 11 before the Brewers struck for six runs in the seventh.

DENVER (AP) - Mac Williamson wasted no time after being promoted from Triple-A Sacramento, homering and driving in four runs to help San Francisco beat Colorado.

Evan Longoria and Kevin Pillar also homered in support of Madison Bumgarner (2-4), who went six innings and allowed three runs on eight hits.

Charlie Blackmon homered to lead off Colorado's first inning. Chris Iannetta also homered for Colorado and Ian Desmond tripled twice.

Williamson's return to the Giants culminated an arduous, yearlong comeback that included being designated for assignment by the Giants after a disappointing showing in spring training. He had begun last season as the Giants' left fielder but in late April tripped over a bullpen mound while going for a foul ball and crashed head first into the padded railing. Lingering concussion symptoms forced him to miss much of the rest of the season.

The Indians wasted a strong outing by starter Jefry Rodriguez (0-2). Cleveland has been shut out twice in three games and scored just one run in the past 27 innings.

Giolito, who allowed just three hits, retired the leadoff hitter to start what became an eventful eighth. Alex Colome got his seventh save.
