    • Hendricks needs 81 pitches for CG, Cubs beat Cards 4-0
      May 3, 2019
      By The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) Kyle Hendricks needed just 81 pitches for a four-hitter, Anthony Rizzo homered for his third straight game and the Chicago Cubs beat the NL Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals 4-0 on Friday.

The second-place Cubs won their season-high fifth in a row while cutting St. Louis' lead to 1+ games. The Cardinals have back-to-back losses after five consecutive victories.

Hendricks (2-4) pitched his third career shutout and fourth complete game, his first since he shut out Miami on Aug. 1, 2016. The right-hander struck out three and did not walk a batter, after getting pounded in a loss at Arizona last week. Hendricks improved to 6-2 in 15 starts against St. Louis.

Rizzo made it 3-0 with a three-run drive against Jack Flaherty (3-2) in the third and finished with three hits. Javier Baez added an RBI single in the seventh, and the Cubs opened a 10-game homestand with a win.

Flaherty allowed three runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings.

      BRAVES 7, MARLINS 2

MIAMI (AP) - Freddie Freeman and Brian McCann each homered to help Atlanta settle its score with Miami pitcher Jose Urena.

Braves right-hander Kevin Gausman was ejected in the second inning for throwing a 97 mph fastball behind Urena (1-5), who was at the center of a melee between the teams last season. Touki Toussaint (2-0), recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett, replaced Gausman and allowed one run in four innings with six strikeouts.

Gausman's first pitch to Urena was knee-high behind the batter, and plate umpire Jeff Nelson immediately signaled the ejection.

The game was Urena's first against the Braves since he was suspended for six games for intentionally hitting Atlanta's Ronald Acuna Jr. on the arm with a pitch last August, triggering a bench-clearing confrontation.

      YANKEES 6, TWINS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Gary Sanchez homered twice and New York overcame its latest injury, beating Minnesota after starter James Paxton exited early with soreness in his left knee.

Already with 13 players on the injured list, the Yankees said Paxton will have an MRI on Saturday. The oft-injured Paxton, acquired from Seattle in an offseason trade to be a front-end starter, lasted only three innings on a nippy, 51-degree night.

Jonathan Holder (2-0) tossed two perfect innings before Adam Ottavino and Tommy Kahnle each worked a hitless inning. Aroldis Chapman got three outs for his sixth save.

Sanchez launched a 428-foot shot off Kyle Gibson (2-1) leading off the fifth and lined a laser to left field against birthday boy Mike Morin for his 10th home run in the seventh.

      GIANTS 12, REDS 11, 11 INNINGS

CINCINNATI (AP) - Stephen Vogt hit a tying homer in the ninth inning, Evan Longoria connected in the 11th and San Francisco rallied from an eight-run deficit for a victory over Cincinnati.

Down 8-0 after three innings, the Giants piled up three homers off the NL's top bullpen to pull it out and ruin top prospect Nick Senzel's debut for the Reds.

The Giants were down to their final out when Vogt connected off Raisel Iglesias for his first homer, tying it 11-11. Longoria led off the 11th with a homer just inside the left field foul pole off Jared Hughes (2-1), allowing San Francisco to get the better of a matchup between the NL's two worst offenses.

Reyes Moronta (1-2) escaped a threat in the 10th. Will Smith retired the side in the 11th for his eighth save in eight chances.

      PHILLIES 4, NATIONALS 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Rhys Hoskins hit a three-run homer, Jerad Eickhoff threw five crisp innings and Philadelphia beat Washington.

After Kurt Suzuki went deep off Seranthony Dominguez (3-0) to give the Nationals a 2-1 lead in the sixth, the Phillies rallied.

Jean Segura's infield single with one out chased Jeremy Hellickson. Lefty Dan Jennings (0-1) entered to face Bryce Harper, who drew a walk. Nationals manager Dave Martinez had a right-hander warming up in the bullpen but kept Jennings in to pitch to Hoskins. The cleanup hitter blasted a 1-1 pitch out to left to give Philadelphia a 4-2 lead.

RED SOX 6, WHITE SOX 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Chris Sale snapped out of his early season funk to earn his first win with an impressive performance against his former team, tossing six scoreless innings of three-hit ball in Boston's victory over Chicago.

Sale (1-5) entered with a 6.30 ERA through six starts but was dominant against Chicago in striking out a season-high 10. The left-hander retired seven of his first eight batters and didn't allow a hit until Yoan Moncada lined a sharp single with two outs in the fourth.

Rafael Devers launched a three-run homer deep to center off Reynaldo Lopez in the first inning. Michael Chavis added two-run shot to the top of the left field stands in the sixth as Boston won for the fourth time in its last five games.

Lopez (2-4) allowed six runs and eight hits through five-plus innings. In his previous start, the right-hander yielded only an unearned run and struck out a career-high 14 in six innings.

      INDIANS 2, MARINERS 1

CLEVELAND (AP) - Pinch-hitter Tyler Naquin's two-out single in the ninth inning drove in the winning run and Cleveland defeated Seattle.

Naquin, batting for Jordan Luplow, grounded the first pitch from Anthony Swarzak (2-1) through the right side to score Leonys Martin from second base. Naquin was mobbed by teammates down the right field line after Cleveland's second walkoff win of the season.

The hit also provided some good news for the Indians, who placed pitcher Corey Kluber on the 10-day injured list before the game. Kluber broke his right arm after being hit by a line drive Wednesday and is out indefinitely. The Indians said Kluber does not need surgery for now and will be re-examined in three to four weeks.

Brad Hand (1-1) struck out two in the ninth to earn the win.

      BREWERS 3, METS 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Ryan Braun hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the fifth inning off Steven Matz (3-2), Brandon Woodruff pitched five solid innings and Milwaukee beat New York.

Braun had three hits to lift his average to .226, including his seventh home run of the season. Milwaukee played its fifth consecutive game without NL MVP Christian Yelich, who continues to deal with low back discomfort.

Woodruff (4-1) gave up six hits and one run in five innings to beat the Mets for the second time in a week. He walked two and struck out seven.

Josh Hader got six outs for his eighth save in eight tries. Hader allowed the first two batters in the ninth to reach before striking out the next three.

      ATHLETICS 14, PIRATES 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Josh Phegley drove in a career-high eight runs to set a franchise record for most RBIs in a game by a catcher and Oakland snapped a six-game losing streak.

Phegley sandwiched a run-scoring single in the third between bases-clearing doubles in the second and fourth and added a long solo homer in the ninth. He finished 4 for 5 for the A's, who jumped on Joe Musgrove (1-3) early to win for just the fifth time in 18 tries away from O.Co Coliseum.

Matt Chapman added his ninth home run for Oakland and Kendry Morales went 3 for 4 as the A's set season highs in both runs and hits (16), and nearly matched their entire 15-run output during the six-game slide that dropped them to the bottom of the American League West.

Brett Anderson (4-2) allowed one run on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts to pick up his first win since April 9. Anderson even added a pair of singles at the plate for the first multihit game of his career.

      RAYS 7, ORIOLES 0

BALTIMORE (AP) - Tyler Glasnow pitched seven innings of three-hit ball to earn his major league-leading sixth win, and Tampa Bay got a slump-breaking homer from Mike Zunino in a rout of Baltimore.

Glasnow (6-0) struck out eight, walked none and lowered his AL-best ERA to 1.47. It's been an impressive turnaround for the right-hander, who entered this season with a 4-16 lifetime record.

Zunino snapped an 0-for-17 skid with a three-run homer off Dan Straily (1-2) to make it 4-0 in the fourth inning.

      TIGERS 4, ROYALS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Matthew Boyd struck out nine in another solid outing, and Detroit scored three runs in the first inning.

It was the sixth straight quality start for Boyd (3-2), who allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings. He walked one. Shane Greene allowed a solo homer to Jorge Soler in the ninth, but he was able to close the game out for his American League-leading 13th save in 13 chances.

Jorge Lopez (0-3) settled down nicely after a tough first inning. He allowed four runs and five hits in seven innings.

          **************************

          Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

          13) A 14-year old kid named Yang Kuang played in the European Tour event in China this week; he made the cut by a stroke, making a 15-foot putt on the last hole to finish the two days -1.

They show the kid get up and down from the bunker; he isn’t very big, but what a future he has, to be able to hold his own against pros when he is just starting high school.

          12) So I’m having lunch at Denny’s Friday, and the couple in the next booth is having a fairly big argument; they’re newlyweds, and the Mrs is “stressed out”, but they can’t agree on why she is stressed out, which stresses her out even further. Neither person is happy.

This goes on for a while, then they mercifully ask for the check, take their argument elsewhere. Hopefully they have a comfortable couch in their home, seeing how the Mr figured to be sleeping there Friday night. Oy.

          11) The dictionary defines “scapegoat” this way:

“a person who is blamed for the wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults of others, especially for reasons of expediency.”

Or in the case of the Washington Nationals, pitching coach Derek Lilliquist, who got told to take a hike Thursday after Washington stumbled to a 13-17 start.

Not his fault Bryce Harper signed in Philly.

          10) Braves 7, Marlins 2— Last year, when Ronald Acuna was batting leadoff and hitting lot of homers, Jose Urena of Miami drilled him with the first pitch of a game and got tossed. Lot of words were exchanged since then. This game was the first time since then that Urena faced Atlanta.

Bottom of 2nd inning, Urena comes to bat and the first pitch is behind him, which wasn’t very subtle- Urena actually did a good job to avoid the pitch. Home plate ump immediately tosses Braves’ P Kevin Gausman out of the game, which didn’t go over well with the Atlanta dugout.

          9) You know the home team is pretty sad when their TV people send the roving reporter out to promote the stadium’s concession stands in the 2nd inning, and during her report, there is no one else in the shot. No one. Zero. Bupkis.

Marlins’ home games are like the old joke, that if you’re an escaped convict, that would be a good place to hide out, since no one would think to look for anyone there.

          8) With more strikeouts/home runs in baseball, that means fewer balls in play; does that lead to teams play worse fielders, since they’re going to get less action?

Milwaukee is playing Mike Moustakas at 2B, Travis Shaw at 3B; I’m guessing they have to have a 2B with better range than Moustakas somewhere in their system.

          7) NFL and FOX agreed to fewer, but longer commercial breaks during next year’s Super Bowl. Four commercial breaks per quarter instead of five, with each running for 2.5 minutes instead of two minutes. Overall, same amount of commercials will be shown.

          6) Detroit Lions’ trainer quit this week, to pursue “other opportunities”; the guy had spent 25 years in the NFL, the last five in Detroit. He was replaced by somebody from U of Michigan, who had previously spent time with the Patriots, Giants. Go figure. Matt Patricia spent a long time with the Patriots.

I may be a conspiracy theorist here, but guys don’t quit jobs like that, not when they’ve spent 25 years in the league. New head coach comes in, and after one season the trainer “quits”. It will read that he jumped ship, but the suspicion here is that he got pushed.

          5) Hope for New Jersey Jets’ fans this season:

Since 2000, Jets head coaches, 1st year and then after……

2000 Al Groh First year: 9-7 Only lasted one year
2001 Herm Edwards: First year: 10-6 Rest of time: 29-35
2006: Eric Mangini: First year: 10-6 Rest of time: 13-19
2008: Rex Ryan: First year: 9-7 Rest of time: 37-43
2015: Todd Bowles: First year: 10-6 Rest of time: 14-33
2019 will be Adam Gase’s first year as Jets’ coach.

          4) Cincinnati Reds scored total of nine runs in Tyler Mahle’s first six starts, which explains why they lost five of those games. Mahle is 0-4, 4.09 with a 1.30 WHIP; he hasn’t been terrible, just hasn’t gotten any support whatsoever.

          3) Cubs 4, Cardinals 0– Kyle Hendricks threw an 81-pitch complete game, the fewest pitches in a complete game since Aaron Cook in 2012.

          2) Giants 12, Reds 11 (11)— Cincinnati led 8-0 in 3rd inning, 11-7 in 8th inning but lost, day after splitting pair of 1-0 games in New York. Stephen Vogt went 3-3 with three runs scored for SF, in a game he didn’t enter until the fifth inning.

          1) The governor of Montana signed a sports betting bill this week, the first state this year to pass a sports betting bill. Tennessee will also have sports betting soon; governors in Iowa, Indiana have similar bills on their desks.

Montana expects to have their system up for the NFL season.

          • Weekend Watch
            Joe Williams

            Saturday, May 4

The Cardinals and Cubs square off at Wrigley Field on Saturday afternoon at 4:05 p.m. ET on national television. The Cards have rattled off 10 victories over their past 13 games, and they're also 10-3 in the past 13 against right-handed starting pitchers, too. In addition, they're 13-6 in the past 19 starts by RHP Michael Wacha, while going 7-2 in his past nine against National League Central Division foes. However, the Cards are just 1-4 in the past five road outings against teams with a winning overall mark, and 3-8 in the past 11 road outings overall against teams with a winning record. For the Cubs, they have picked up five consecutive victories, while going 4-0 in their past four vs. RHP. They're also 4-1 in the past five at home. However, the Cubbies have managed just one win over the past five starts by RHP Yu Darvish. In this series, the Cards have won just five times in the past 21 trips to Wrigley Field, while going 1-5 in the past five road outings by Wacha in Chicago. The 'over' is 8-2-1 in the past 11 meetings in Wrigley, and 5-1-1 in Wacha's past seven starts on the north side.

The Nationals and Phillies face each other on Friday night, as LHP Patrick Corbin and RHP Jake Arrieta do battle at 'The Vault'. Currently OF Bryce Harper's new team is five games above his old team in the NL East standings. Washington has won just twice in the past seven on the road, while going 1-4 in the past five overall. They're also 1-5 in the past six vs. RHP. For the Phillies, they're 5-1 in the past six starts, and 4-0 in the past four against NL East opponents. Philly has also won five of the past six at home, and they're 26-9 in the past 35 at home vs. LHP. In addition, they're 4-1 in Arrieta's past five starts against divisional foes.

On the south side, it's a battle of Sox, and a battle of southpaws, too, as LHP Eduardo Rodriguez of the Red Sox battles LHP Manny Banuelos. Boston is starting to piece things together after a slow start, going 4-1 in the past five on the road, while going 4-1 in the past five overall, too. However, they're still just 1-5 in their past six tries vs. LHP, and 0-4 in the past four on the road against southpaws. E-Rod has been hot, and the BoSox are 4-0 in his past four against AL Central teams, 12-3 in his past 15 on the road and 22-5 in his past 27 against teams with an overall losing record. The White Sox are 4-1 in their past five vs. LHP, and 5-2 in the past seven overall, too. They're also 5-2 in the past seven on the south side. In this series the under is an impressive 10-2 in the past 12 meetings, while going 4-1 in the past five battles at Guaranteed Rate Field.

It's more lefty-on-lefty crime when the Dodgers battle the Padres at Petco as LHP Rich Hill and LHP Joey Lucchesi battle. The Dodgers have won six of their past eight overall, and they're 5-2 in the past seven road outings against a team with a winning record. They're also 8-1 in Hill's past nine starts, and 4-0 in his past four road outings. For the Padres, they're 7-3 in the past 10 vs. LHP, while going 5-1 in the past six at home against lefties. The Padres have dropped each of their past four against divisional foes. They're 4-1 in Lucchesi's past five home outings, but 3-13 in the past 16 against NL West foes. L.A. has won four of their past five trips to San Diego, and they're 6-2 in Hill's past eight starts against the Padres.

            Weather Report

The weather report looks great all across the MLB venues on Saturday, with precipitation chances under 20 percent and wind under 10 mph. Weather won't play a factor.

            Sunday, May 5

The Braves and Marlins will square off in South Florida. RHP Julio Teheran is on the bump, and the Braves are just 1-4 over his past five road outings, although they're 6-2 in his past eight outings against teams with a losing overall record. The Marlins are just 2-10 in RHP Pablo Lopez's past 12 starts, and they 0-7 in his past seven outings against divisional foes. The over is 5-2 in Teheran's past seven outings overall, while the under is 5-0 in Lopez's past five outings. The over is also 8-3 in the past 11 starts against the Marlins by Teheran.

RHP Zack Greinke and RHP German Marquez will do battle in the Mile High City, as the Diamondbacks and Rockies square off. Arizona has won six straight starts by Grinke, and they're 11-4 across his past 15 road outings. They're also 11-5 in the past 16 starts by Greinke against divisional opponents. The Rockies have won six of Marquez's past eight home outings, and they're 5-2 in the past seven starts overall by the righty. They're also 7-3 in the past 10 starts against NL West opponents by Marquez. The Rockies are 4-0 in Marquez's past four vs. the Diamondbacks, and the over is 5-0 across the past five starts by Marquez against Arizona.

The Cardinals and Cubs are the nationally televised game on Sunday night, with RHP Adam Wainwright and LHP Jose Quintana doing battle. St. Louis has won seven of the past 10 starts by Waino, and they're 38-17 in his past 55 inside the divisiion. The Cubbies have won each of Quintana's past four starts, and they're 4-1 in his past five at home against winning teams, 6-2 in his past eight overall against winning club and an impressive 20-7 in the past 27 starts by Q at home. The under is 4-1-1 in Quintanan's past six while working on six days of rest, and, for what it's worth, the under is 8-3-1 in his past 12 showings on a Sunday. The under is also 4-1-1 in his past six against the Cards. For St. Louis, the under is 4-0-1 in Waino's past five starts, 8-1-1 in his past 10 overall against teams with a winning overall record and 6-2-1 in Wainwright's past nine against the Cubs.

            Weather Report

The Rays and O's will face a 50 percent chance of rain for the start of their 1:05 p.m. ET game on Sunday. However, the rain will taper off considerably and they'll get it underway, perhaps after a slight delay. The same holds true for the Nationals-Phillies battle, as their is a 35 percent chance of rain for the first hour of Sunday's game, but less than 20 percent after.

In the Bronx the rains will also be falling, potentially pushing back the Twins-Yankees battle by a few hours. However, they'll likely be able to get it in, as rain chances diminish to 25 percent by 4:00 p.m.

For the Blue Jays-Rangers battle in Arlington it will be the winds which affect the game. There will be a 9-12 mph wind blowing in from right field to home plate, knocking the ball down for left-handed hitters in particular. For Dodgers-Padres in San Diego, the winds will be blowing in from 9-12 mph from left field to home plate. Lastly, the Astros and Angels will face 10-13 mph winds blowing in from the left-center field power alley to home plate at Monterrey Baseball Stadium.

                      • LEADING OFF: Andújar expected off IL, Cahill's global feat
                        May 3, 2019
                        By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                        HOT CORNER HELPER

Third baseman Miguel Andujar is set to come off the injured list for the Yankees against Minnesota, and New York hopes a few other big bats will follow. Second baseman DJ LeMahieu may join him in the lineup, with outfielder Clint Frazier expected to follow Monday, the same day center fielder Aaron Hicks could begin a minor league rehab assignment. The Yankees are also hoping for good news when left-hander James Paxton gets an MRI on his left knee. He left Friday night's game with soreness there.

                        MIAMI HEAT

Tensions are again running high between the Braves and Marlins a day after Atlanta starter Kevin Gausman was ejected for throwing a 97 mph fastball behind Miami right-hander Jose Urena. Urena was at the center of a bench-clearing confrontation between the teams last season after plunking Ronald Acuna Jr., a pitch that got Urena suspended for six games. Asked after Friday's game if the feud was finished, Marlins manager Don Mattingly answered: ''We'll see.''

                        GLOBETROTTING

Angels RHP Trevor Cahill (1-2, 5.93) is set to become the first pitcher in big league history to start games in four different countries when he takes the mound at Estadio de Beisbol Monterrey against the Astros, part of a two-game series in Mexico. Cahill has already started in the U.S., Canada and Australia.

                        ROLLING RIZZO

Cubs slugger Anthony Rizzo is heating up with the first-place Cardinals in town for three games. Rizzo homered in his third straight game Friday, helping Chicago top St. Louis 4-0 behind an 81-pitch complete game from Kyle Hendricks. Rizzo is 10 for 21 in the past week, raising his batting average from .198 to .252 while hitting four of his eight homers and driving in nine runs.

                        ACE IN THE MAKING?

Rookie right-hander Mike Soroka is showing signs he could be Atlanta's next ace. He has a 2.76 ERA through eight career starts, including a 1.62 mark in three games this season. The Braves have gotten mixed results from their young rotation, entering Friday with a 4.67 ERA among the starters - 21st in the majors - but Soroka and Max Fried have been excellent. The 21-year-old Soroka gets the ball against Miami.

                            • Red Sox get 10 hits in a row in 15-2 rout of White Sox
                              May 4, 2019
                              By The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) The Boston Red Sox strung together 10 straight hits against White Sox left-hander Manny Banuelos, ending one hit shy of the major league record during a nine-run third inning in a 15-2 rout of Chicago on Saturday night.

Banuelos (2-1) retired his first eight batters before Christian Vazquez opened Boston's two-out rally with a single. Xander Bogaerts, Michael Chavis and Eduardo Nunez each homered, Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez had RBI doubles, and Vazquez capped the streak with another single before White Sox manager Rick Renteria pulled Banuelos with a 9-1 deficit. Carson Fulmer replaced Banuelos and interrupted the hit parade by walking Andrew Benintendi. Betts flew out to right to end the inning after 14 batters.

The Colorado Rockies had a major league-record 11 straight hits during a 17-2 win over the Chicago Cubs at Coors Field on July 30, 2010.

Chavis added another solo shot in the fifth for his first multihomer game and finished with four hits and three RBIs. All of the Red Sox starters except Vazquez had at least one RBI. Eduardo Rodriguez (3-2) worked six innings and scattered six hits.

Jose Abreu homered for the White Sox.

                              REDS 9, GIANTS 2

CINCINNATI (AP) - Nick Senzel hit his first major league homer two innings after being robbed of one by center fielder Kevin Pillar, and the Reds beat the San Francisco Giants.

Pillar climbed the fence and made a spectacular grab on Senzel's drive in the third, but Cincinnati's top prospect left no doubt his next time up in the fifth. He followed Derek Dietrich's third homer in two games with his own solo shot into the right-field seats, one of five homers for the Reds.

Eugenio Suarez hit a three-run drive, Puig added a no-doubter among his season-high three hits, and Tucker Barnhart also went deep, boosting Cincinnati's count to eight over the last two games. The outburst Saturday was more than enough for Tanner Roark (2-1), who set season highs with 6 2/3 innings pitched and seven strikeouts. He allowed four hits, two runs and two walks while improving to 7-1 in nine career games against the Giants.

Dereck Rodriguez (3-4) gave up four of Cincinnati's homers on the way to his first loss in four road starts this season.

                              ASTROS 14, ANGELS 2

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) - Alex Bregman hit two of Houston's five home runs and the Astros broke out the bats in a big way, routing the Los Angeles Angels.

Michael Brantley, Yuli Gurriel and George Springer also homered for Houston in the opener of a two-game series in Mexico. After totaling just four runs in losing their previous two games to Minnesota, the Astros teed off at the raucous Estadio de Beisbol de Monterrey. Houston scored in each of the first six innings in building a 10-2 lead.

Albert Pujols hit a solo homer for the Angels, who had won four in a row. He now has 1,999 career RBIs.

Wade Miley (2-2) allowed two runs in six innings. Trevor Cahill (1-3) was tagged for six runs in 3 1/3 innings.

The Angels and Astros both played a regular-season game in Mexico for the first time. Both teams had played exhibition games in the country.

                              NATIONALS 10, PHILLIES 8

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Kurt Suzuki and Victor Robles hit consecutive home runs in the eighth inning to rally the Washington Nationals past the Phillies.

It was just the third win in the last 10 for the Nationals, whose injuries continued to pile up. Already without Ryan Zimmerman (foot), Anthony Rendon (elbow) and Trea Turner (finger), Washington placed left fielder Juan Soto (back) on the 10-day injured list before the game. The Nationals suffered two injuries during the game, with first baseman Matt Adams jamming his left shoulder and center fielder Michael Taylor injuring his left wrist.

Washington was so short-handed that ace right-hander Max Scherzer pinch-hit with the bases loaded in the ninth. Scherzer, a career .190 hitter, lined a ball hard just foul down the right-field line before grounding out to end the inning.

After giving up five runs in the seventh, the Nationals came back with four two-out runs in the eighth to make a winner out of Tony Sipp (1-1). Sean Doolittle pitched a scoreless ninth for his fifth save. Brian Dozier homered for Washington.

Adam Morgan (1-1) took the loss.

                              BRAVES 9, MARLINS 2

MIAMI (AP) - Ozzie Albies hit a grand slam, Ronald Acuna Jr. tied a career best with four hits and the Atlanta Braves topped the Marlins.

Brian McCann drove in three runs for Atlanta, which trailed 2-0 after five innings before breaking out against Miami's bullpen. Even Braves starter Mike Soroka got in on the offense, collecting his first career RBI with a seventh-inning single - his first hit of 2019 and the second of his brief big league career. Albies tied a career best with five RBIs. The other time he did that: May 10, 2018, also at Marlins Park.

Soroka (3-1) allowed three hits, struck out six and walked only two in seven innings, and the two runs Miami scratched out with him on the mound were unearned.

The Marlins' major league-worst record fell to 9-23, the third-worst in franchise history through 32 games. Nick Anderson (0-1) gave up five runs in 1 1/3 relief innings, including the grand slam by Albies, to take the loss.

                              TWINS 7, YANKEES 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Jake Odorizzi kept up his impressive run, pitching two-hit ball over six shutout innings and leading the Minnesota Twins past the Yankees.

The Twins had lost nine straight times at Yankee Stadium, including the 2017 AL wild-card game, before Odorizzi and three home runs boosted them. Odorizzi (4-2) won his fourth start in a row.

Mitch Garver and C.J. Cron homered off J.A. Happ (1-3) and Nelson Cruz went deep in the ninth. Happ allowed four runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Gary Sanchez homered for New York, his third in two games.

The Yankees activated third baseman Miguel Andujar from their abundant injured list after he missed 28 games with a shoulder tear. He went 1 for 3 with a walk but also made two errors, misplaying a grounder early and later making a wild throw.

                              INDIANS 5, MARINERS 4

CLEVELAND (AP) - Carlos Santana hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning and the Indians rallied past Seattle, sending the Mariners to their sixth straight loss.

Santana tagged Connor Sadzeck (0-1) for his fifth home run of the season.

Tim Beckham hit a leadoff home run to break a 3-all tie in the eighth - Seattle's fourth solo homer of the game. Edwin Encarnacion, Daniel Vogelbach and Dylan Moore also connected for Seattle, which leads the AL with 65 home runs. Carlos Carrasco allowed all four home runs, a career high for the right-hander, who struck out nine in 7 2/3 innings.

Tyler Olson (1-0) retired the final hitter in the eighth for the win. Brad Hand walked Encarnacion to begin the ninth, then struck out the next three hitters for his 10th save.

                              CUBS 6, CARDINALS 5

CHICAGO (AP) - Javier Baez led off the eighth inning with a tiebreaking homer, and the surging Cubs wiped out a four-run deficit to beat the St. Louis Cardinals.

Baez drove a 2-2 pitch from John Brebbia (1-1) to right for his 11th homer, sending the Cubs to their season-high sixth straight win.

Taylor Davis hit a tying grand slam in the fourth against Michael Wacha for his first career homer.

Brandon Kintzler (1-0) worked a scoreless eighth for the victory. Pedro Strop retired all three batters in the ninth for his fourth save in five chances as the Cubs cut St. Louis' lead in the NL Central to a half-game.

                              ORIOLES 3, RAYS 0

BALTIMORE (AP) - Dylan Bundy took a two-hitter into the eighth inning, Dwight Smith Jr. homered and the Orioles blanked the Rays.

In a matchup between the team with the best record in the majors and the rebuilding, last-place Orioles, Bundy (1-4) was the difference. The right-hander gave up three hits in 7 1/3 innings, struck out four, walked one and hit a batter. Mychal Givens worked the ninth for his third save.

The victory improved Baltimore's major league-worst home record to 4-11 and dropped the Rays' road mark to 12-5, still the best the big leagues.

Ryne Stanek was scheduled to start for Tampa Bay, but the threat of rain caused manager Kevin Cash to switch to Yonny Chirinos, whom he thought was better suited to handle a delay. The rain never came, and Chirinos allowed three runs and seven hits over 7 1/3 innings to absorb his first loss since Aug. 17, 2018, at Boston. He had won eight straight.

                              PIRATES 6, ATHLETICS 4

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Kevin Newman hit a go-ahead two-run triple in the seventh inning and the Pirates rallied past the Oakland Athletics.

Newman, in his at first-bat in nearly a month thanks to a cut on his right middle finger, ripped a shot down the right-field line off J.B. Wendelken (0-1) to bring home Gregory Polanco and Bryan Reynolds with two outs in the seventh as the Pirates won for the third time in four games. Francisco Cervelli followed with an RBI single to give Pittsburgh a boost on the same day it lost ace Jameson Taillon for at least a month with a strained right (throwing) elbow.

Josh Bell homered twice for Pittsburgh, taking Oakland starter Chris Bassitt deep in both the second and third innings for the first two-home run game of the first baseman's career.

Michael Feliz (1-0) picked up the win in relief after coming on in the seventh when Keone Kela exited with discomfort in his right shoulder. Felipe Vazquez worked around a two-out single by Marcus Semien to collect his ninth save.

                              ROYALS 15, TIGERS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Alex Gordon homered as part of a four-run first inning, and the Kansas City Royals routed the Tigers after chasing Tyson Ross (1-4) in the second inning and scored the game's first seven runs.

Homer Bailey (3-3) allowed two runs in six innings in a solid outing for Kansas City.

Whit Merrifield also homered for the Royals, and Jeimer Candelario and Ronny Rodriguez went deep for the Tigers. Kelvin Gutierrez had four hits and a stolen base for Kansas City in his eighth major league game.

                              RANGERS 8, BLUE JAYS 5

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit a bases-loaded triple during a four-run second inning and drove in a career-high four, as the Rangers ended a three-game skid by scoring eight runs in the first three innings.

Lance Lynn (4-2) won for the fourth time in five starts despite allowing five runs in six innings. He walked five, struck out three and threw two wild pitches. Shawn Kelley retired three straight batters in the ninth on eight pitches for his second save in three attempts.

Thomas Pannone (1-3) allowed seven runs in 2 1/3 innings in making his second spot start of the season for the Blue Jays, who have gone to a four-man rotation after Matt Shoemaker's season-ending knee injury. Pannone gave up five hits and three walks while striking out one.

Nomar Mazara hit his sixth homer of the season in the first inning.

                              DIAMONDBACKS 9, ROCKIES 2

DENVER (AP) - Luke Weaver pitched seven strong innings, Nick Ahmed and Carson Kelly hit back-to-back home runs in a three-run second and the Arizona Diamondbacks earned their ninth win in 11 games.

David Peralta also homered for the Diamondbacks, who have won six straight on the road. Wilmer Flores and Christian Walker hit RBI doubles, and Weaver helped himself with a sacrifice fly.

Weaver (3-1) kept the Rockies off balance, holding them to three hits while allowing one run in winning his third straight decision. He had eight strikeouts - one off his season high - and joined Patrick Corbin (2013) and Randy Johnson (2002) as the only Diamondbacks pitchers to go seven or more innings and allow three or fewer hits at Coors Field.

Kyle Freeland (2-5) allowed a career-high eight runs on nine hits in six innings.
