      • Jackson suits up for record 14th team, Jays lose to Giants
        May 15, 2019
        By The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Edwin Jackson became the first player in major league history to play for 14 teams when he made his Toronto Blue Jays debut and pitched five innings Wednesday in a 4-3 loss to the San Francisco Giants.

The 35-year-old right-hander allowed three runs - two earned - and six hits in five innings. He struck out two, walked one, hit a batter and left after 77 pitches with the score 3-3.

Brandon Crawford hit a tiebreaking home run in the sixth off Ryan Tepera (0-2).

Mark Melancon (1-0) pitched out of a first-and-third, no-outs jam in the sixth for the win. Will Smith struck out the side in the ninth to remain perfect in 11 save chances.

Toronto acquired Jackson from Oakland on Saturday for $30,000. He began his tenure with his new team by throwing an 88 mph cutter that Joe Panik took for a called strike.

Jackson had been tied with Octavio Dotel for most teams. Jackson agreed last month to a minor league contract with the A's and was 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA in three minor league starts.

In addition to the Blue Jays and Athletics, Jackson has played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Tampa Bay, Detroit, Arizona, the Chicago White Sox, St. Louis, Washington, the Chicago Cubs, Atlanta, Miami, San Diego and Baltimore.

        YANKEES 5, ORIOLES 3, 1ST GAME

        YANKEES 3, ORIOLES 1, 2ND GAME

NEW YORK (AP) - Gleyber Torres hit three home runs during a doubleheader sweep, including a solo shot in the nightcap, and Domingo German became the majors' first eight-game winner as New York topped Baltimore twice.

Torres hit two of New York's four homers during a 5-3 win in the first game. The 2018 All-Star has eight homers this season, and six have come against the Orioles.

The Yankees announced during the second game that third baseman Miguel Andujar, last year's runner-up for AL Rookie of the Year, will have season-ending surgery to repair a small labrum tear in his right shoulder Monday.

New York has won 20 of 27 games to move a season-high 10 games over .500 at 26-16 despite currently having 13 players on the injured list.

Aroldis Chapman closed out both games, giving him 11 saves in 12 chances.

German (8-1) struck out eight over seven innings of one-run ball. Andrew Cashner (4-2) pitched six innings of two-run ball, striking out seven.

In the opener, Gary Sanchez and Cameron Maybin also went deep, and Orioles starter David Hess (1-5) set a career high with four homers allowed.

Yankees left-hander J.A. Happ (3-3) was pulled after 5 1/3 innings and 64 pitches. He allowed three runs and five hits, including solo homers to Trey Mancini and Renato Nunez.

        BRAVES 4, CARDINALS 0

ATLANTA (AP) - Austin Riley made a splash in his big league debut, homering off Michael Wacha to lead Atlanta over St. Louis.

Mike Soroka (4-1) pitched three-hit ball over seven scoreless innings.

The 22-year-old Riley was called up from Triple-A Gwinnett before the game after Ender Inciarte went on the 10-day injured list with a sore back. He struck out swinging in the first at-bat. Leading off the fourth, he launched a high fastball deep into the left-field seats, a 438-foot drive that gave the Braves a 2-0 lead. Riley hit another drive to the edge of the warning track his next time up.

Wacha (3-1) surrendered only four hits and one earned run over five innings.

        TWINS 8, ANGELS 7

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -Reliever Mike Morin hit former teammate Mike Trout with a bases-loaded pitch that forced in a run in the ninth inning before retiring Shohei Ohtani to end the game on a groundout and preserve Minnesota's win over Los Angeles.

Jonathan Lucroy had an RBI double and David Fletcher drove in a run with a single against Trevor Hildenberger in the three-run ninth, before the Twins turned to Morin for the final two outs and his first save this season. Morin gave up two of the season-high 18 hits by the Angels and plunked Trout on the shoulder.

Byron Buxton and Jason Castro each hit two-run homers and Ehire Adrianza added a two-run double for the Twins, who took the three-game set from the Angels and improved their series record this season to 8-4-2. They've won 10 of their last 15 games.

Twins starter Jake Odorizzi (6-2) had his scoreless streak stopped at 22 innings. He gave up nine hits and three runs in 5 1/3 innings.

Angels starter Trevor Cahill (2-4) allowed six hits and six runs in 4 1/3 innings. He failed to finish the fifth for the fifth time in his last six turns.

The Angels went 3 for 17 with runners in scoring position, leaving 14 men on base.

        ASTROS 5, TIGERS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Justin Verlander allowed two hits in seven impressive innings against his former team, and Houston beat Detroit for its eighth straight win.

Verlander (7-1) struck out nine in his second start at Comerica Park since his 2017 trade from Detroit to Houston. JaCoby Jones homered off him in the third for the Tigers' only run.

Alex Bregman hit his 14th homer of the season, a solo shot off Gregory Soto (0-2) to open the scoring.

Jake Marisnick hit an RBI single for Houston in the second, and Robinson Chirinos added a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Detroit made two errors in the sixth, helping the Astros score another run. Marisnick hit a run-scoring triple in the eighth to make it 5-1.

Ryan Pressly pitched the eighth for Houston, which has won 11 of 12.

        RANGERS 6, ROYALS 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Ronald Guzman and Willie Calhoun hit two-run homers in Texas' win over Kansas City.

Shin-Soo Choo added a solo shot in the ninth and Nomar Mazara matched a career high with four hits as the Rangers snapped a five-game skid.

Mike Minor (4-3) got through five rocky innings, allowing one run on eight hits and two walks.

Guzman drove in a run in the fourth before sending a hanging pitch from Jorge Lopez (0-5) booming into the center field seats in the sixth. The two-out shot broke open a 3-1 game and sent Lopez, who had plunked two batters and struggled with command all night, toward the showers.

Lopez allowed seven hits and two walks while striking out seven.

The Rangers' bullpen allowed only one hit over the final four innings.

        NATIONALS 5, METS 1

WASHINGTON (AP) - Patrick Corbin struck out 11 in eight strong innings and Victor Robles homered in Washington's win over New York.

Anthony Rendon had three hits for Washington (17-25), which had lost seven of 10. He had two doubles and a single, scored twice and drove in a run.

Corbin (4-1) allowed one run and four hits to win his second consecutive start. He retired 15 of 16 batters from the third into the eighth inning.

Wilmer Font (1-1) gave up five runs and six hits - including a homer and three long doubles - in 2 1/3 innings.

J.D. Davis had an RBI double for the Mets, who had won three straight.

        DIAMONDBACKS 11, PIRATES 1

PHOENIX (AP) - Zack Greinke pitched shutout ball into the eighth inning before exiting with abdominal tightness and Arizona routed Chris Archer and Pittsburgh.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Greinke would get an MRI on Friday.

Greinke (6-1) allowed four hits in 7 2-3 innings, then walked off the mound with a trainer with a 2-2 count on the Pirates' Cole Tucker. Greinke struck out five, walked none.

Blake Swihart hit a two-run, inside-the-park home run in the eighth, and Eduardo Escobar and Adam Jones also homered for the Diamondbacks, who went 6-1 against the Pirates this season. Jarrod Dyson had two hits, scored three runs and stole two bases.

Melky Cabrera drove in the Pirates' run with a two-out single in the ninth.

Pirates pitcher Chris Archer walked the bases loaded in the first inning, and all three runners scored. Archer (1-3) lasted just 3 2-3 innings, allowing six earned runs on four hits with four walks and a wild pitch.

        BREWERS 5, PHILLIES 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Gio Gonzalez continued to make the most of his second stint in Milwaukee, allowing one run while pitching into the sixth inning in a win over Philadelphia.

Gonzalez (2-0) allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out three.

Jesus Aguilar ripped a two-run single off Jake Arrieta (4-4) in the third to give the Brewers a 4-1 lead and they hung on to take two of the first three games of a four-game set. Josh Hader tossed a scoreless ninth for his 11th save.

Bryce Harper lined a double to left field and made a sliding catch in right a day after he banged his left knee into the wall on a sliding catch. His double snapped an 0-for-15 slump.

        RAYS 1, MARLINS 0

MIAMI (AP) - Seven pitchers combined on a seven-hitter, and Tampa Bay shut out Miami for the second straight game.

The Marlins (10-31) lost their seventh consecutive game and are on pace for 122 losses.

Tampa Bay's run scored in the second inning when catcher Anthony Bemboom doubled for his first major league hit and RBI.

The Marlins stranded 11 runners and went 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position.

Tampa Bay starter Ryne Stanek went one inning. Jalen Beeks (3-0) threw three scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Diego Castillo pitched around a one-out walk in the ninth for his fifth save.

Jose Urena (1-6) allowed only one run in six innings. He has an ERA of 2.77 over his past six starts but is 1-3 during that span.

        REDS 6, CUBS 5, 10 INNINGS

CINCINNATI (AP) - Eugenio Suarez hit a tying two-run homer in the eighth and slumping Yasiel Puig singled with the bases loaded in the 10th, rallying Cincinnati pasts Chicago.

The Cubs' stingy bullpen let a solid start by Yu Darvish go to waste. Darvish allowed five hits, a pair of runs and fanned 11 batters, and Addison Russell hit a two-run homer to help the Cubs to a 5-3 lead.

Suarez's homer off Carl Edwards Jr. tied it in the eighth, only the fourth time the Cubs have blown such a late lead.

Joey Votto drew a one-out walk from Brad Brach (3-1) in the 10th and Suarez followed with a single for his third hit of the game. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Puig singled to the base of the wall in center, flipping his bat away in celebration.

Amir Garrett (3-1) pitched out of a two-on threat in the 10th.

        RED SOX 6, ROCKIES 5

BOSTON (AP) - J.D. Martinez homered in his third straight game, rookie Michael Chavis singled home the winning run in the 10th inning and Boston recovered after blowing a five-run lead to beat Colorado.

Martinez hit a two-run shot and Eduardo Rodriguez struck out 10 over six innings for the Red Sox, who won for the 12th time in 15 games. They split the two-game set to remain unbeaten (13-0-4) in their last 17 interleague series at Fenway Park.

Trevor Story had a two-run single and Tony Wolters doubled twice for Colorado, which had won four of five.

Xander Bogaerts opened the 10th with a double on the first pitch from Chad Bettis (1-3). After Rafael Devers was intentionally walked, Chavis hit a grounder up the middle on the next pitch to win it.

Brandon Workman (3-1) struck out David Dahl with two runners on to end the top of the 10th.

            — Dallas- Bob Stoops

            — Houston- June Jones

            — Los Angeles- Winston Moss

            — New York- Kevin Gilbride

            — St Louis- Jonathan Hayes

            — Seattle- Jim Zorn

            — Tampa Bay- Marc Trestman

            — Washington- Pep Hamilton

            Quote of the Day
“This was a learning process for me, too. I’m going to get some things right and I’m going to get some things wrong, but I think I’m getting this right.”
Jets’ President Christopher Johnson, on firing their GM Wednesday

            Thursday’s quiz
Who did the Jets beat in their only Super Bowl appearance?

            Wednesday’s quiz
Peyton Manning holds the Denver Broncos’ single season record for most TD passes in a season, with 55 in 2013.

            Tuesday’s quiz
Milwaukee Brewers started play in 1970, after they had played in 1969 as an expansion team in Seattle, the Seattle Pilots.

            **************************

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

            13) New Jersey Jets fired GM Mike Maccagnan Wednesday; first-year coach Adam Gase will serve as interim general manager. Jets are 24-40 the last four years, but…….

…….it is May 16, three weeks AFTER the draft.

If you were going to fire the GM, shouldn’t this have happened BEFORE the draft?

            12) Not sure why the NBA paraded prospective draftees out to the draft lottery Tuesday; they had egg on their face when New Orleans won the lottery and Zion Williamson was ushered out of camera’s view pretty quickly. It was apparent that being a Pelican isn’t his goal in life.

All winter we had it shoved down our throats by ESPN how great a kid Zion is, blah, blah, blah. Well, if he is such a great kid, he goes to New Orleans and helps the Pelicans win games, while he is paid very handsomely, and increases his bankroll with a huge sneaker contract.

Steph Curry has played in Oakland the last 10 years and makes $500,000 a game, because he worked his butt off and is a great player. He does a ton of commercials. You can get rich anywhere in the NBA; doesn’t have to be New York or Los Angeles.

            11) Bucks 108, Raptors 100— Milwaukee outscored Raptors 32-17 in 4th quarter; Brook Lopez scored 29 points, 13 in fourth quarter. Bucks lead this series, 1-0.

            Milwaukee’s bench played 79:00, Toronto’s played 40:00.

            10) Giants 4, Blue Jays 3— Edwin Jackson started on the mound for Toronto, his 14th MLB team, which is a new major league record.

            9) College basketball transfer portal:
            — Virginia Tech grad transfer Chris Clarke transferred to Texas Tech.
            — Stephen F. Austin grad transfer T.J. Holyfield also transferred to Texas Tech.
            — Minnesota transfer Isaiah Washington committed to Iona.

            8) Central Florida basketball alum Tacko Fall has a 8’ 2 1/4” wingspan, 10’ 2 1/2” standing reach, which means he can grab the rim without jumping. Will be curious where he gets taken in the NBA Draft in June.

            7) Baseball injuries:
            — Twins put C Mitch Garver (ankle) on IL.
            — Rangers put SS Elvis Andrus (hamstring) on IL.
            — New York 3B Miguel Andujar (labrum surgery) is out for the year.

            6) Eldrick Woods didn’t practice at Bethpage Wednesday, a day before the PGA Championship.

Not sure if this is connected, but Woods is being sued because back in December, a bartender at his restaurant in Florida died in a drunk driving accident, with a .256 BAC, which is really high.

            5) It has been 100 years since an English golfer won the PGA Championship. Just thought you’d like to know.

            4) Seahawks signed QB Geno Smith to help back up Russell Wilson.

            3) Rays 1, Marlins 0— Miami hasn’t scored a run since the third inning on Saturday, thats 24 innings ago. They’ve lost seven games in a row, are 10-31.

            2) Vanderbilt PG Darius Garland, who played four games in college before getting hurt and missing the rest of the season, left the NBA Draft Combine, making people think that Garland “got a promise” from one or more teams that he will get taken in the lottery.

            1) Cubs’ 2B Ben Zobrist took a leave of absence from the team; he is getting divorced from his wife of 14 years. They have three kids, so this is a sad thing for the kids.

You always think pro athletes have this perfect life; they make a ton of money, they’re famous, but they’re also on the road for 100-120 days a year. Stuff happens. Nothing is perfect.

            • LEADING OFF: Braves' Riley homers in debut, Bell streaking
              May 15, 2019
              By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Thursday:

              SMASHING START

Atlanta prospect Austin Riley was quite a hit in his big league debut, connecting for a home run in his second at-bat. The 22-year-old Riley tagged Michael Wacha in a win over St. Louis.

Riley was promoted from Triple-A, where he was leading the International League with 15 homers and 39 RBIs. Normally a third baseman, he started in left field Wednesday night and figures to see time there for a while.

His homer came in front of his parents and a group of 40 family and friends who quickly made the drive from his native Mississippi to SunTrust Park.

Riley and the Braves wrap up the series against Cardinals star Adam Wainwright.

              RING, RING

Josh Bell brings his one-man power show to the West Coast when the Pittsburgh Pirates open a series in San Diego. Riding a career-best 15-game hitting streak, the switch-hitting first baseman is batting .333 with 12 homers, 14 doubles and 39 RBIs in a bounce-back season.

Nobody else on the Pirates has more than four of their 35 home runs. Last year, Bell batted .261 with 12 homers and 62 RBIs in 148 games.

              NOW HITTING ... AND PITCHING

Shohei Ohtani and his two-way skills have some company in the Angels' clubhouse. Called up from the minors, Jared Walsh hit three singles in his major league debut Wednesday while playing first base at Minnesota. Walsh, who like Ohtani is a pitcher and a hitter, was a 39th-round draft pick in 2015. He batted .302 with 10 homers and 26 RBIs in 37 games for Triple-A Salt Lake and allowed two runs in five innings as a left-handed reliever.

              AILING

Tigers star Miguel Cabrera could return to the lineup when Oakland begins a series at Comerica Park. He didn't play Wednesday night against Houston because of a sore knee, missing a chance to hit against former teammate Justin Verlander.

''I'm pretty sure he was chomping at the bit to get a piece of Verlander,'' Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said. ''Sometimes that's not always a good antidote for soreness.''

The 36-year-old Cabrera is hitting .282 with one home runs and 15 RBIs in 40 games.

              WINLESS IN WASHINGTON

Anibal Sanchez (0-6, 5.27 ERA) is still looking for his first win with the Nationals after signing a $19 million, two-year contract as a free agent last offseason.

The 35-year-old right-hander starts the rubber match of a three-game series against the NL East rival Mets. The only starting pitcher in Nationals history (2005-present) to open a season 0-7 was Jason Marquis in 2010. Zack Wheeler (3-2, 4.35) is on the mound for New York. He is 4-9 with a 5.01 ERA in 15 career starts against Washington.

The under is also 12-2 in Castillo's past 14 games overall, and 5-2 un his past seven at home. The under has also cashed in five straight in this series, although the over is 5-1 in Q's past six vs. Cincinnati, incliuding 4-1 in his past five starts at Wrigley.

The Cardinals and Braves square off at SunTrust Park for the series finale after an under result on Wednesday night. The under is an impressive 5-1-1 in the past seven starts by Adam Wainwright, and 9-4-1 across the past 14 by the Cardinals vs. RHP. The under is also 5-2 in their past seven against NL East clubs. However, the over is 12-4-2 in the past 18 against the NL East, while going 14-6-2 in the past 22 road outings with Wainwright on the bump. Fort he Braves, the over is 28-13-3 in the past 44 against winning teams. However, the under is 21-9-1 in the past 31 at home by Julio Teheran, while going 10-4-1 in his past 15 starts at home vs. a winning team. In this series it's all over all the time. The over is 5-0 in the past five meetings in Atlanta, while going 4-0 in Wainwright's past four against the Braves. The over is also 16-5 in the past 21 meetings in this series, too.

                Friday, May 17

The Mets and Marlins get together in Miami, and it's RHP Jacob deGrom and RHP Trevor Richards hooking up. DeGrom hasn't been his dominant self, but he is still 3-4 with a 3.26 ERA and 64 strikeouts over 47 innings. The under is a perfect 3-0 in his past three outings after a 4-0 over run from April 3-26. That includes an under result last time out at home vs. Miami, allowing one earned run, five hits and one walk with eight strikeouts over seven innings. Richards puts his 0-5 record and 4.46 ERA on the line in this one. The over is 4-3 in seven outings for Richards this season, including an over result on April 3 at home vs. the Mets.

The Dodgers turn to LHP Rich Hill for Friday's game against RHP Anthony DeSclafani and the Reds at GABP. The over is 2-1 in Hill's three outings so far this season. DeSclafani is 2-1 with a 4.17 ERA and 46 strikeouts over 46 1/3 innings so far. The over is 3-1 in the past four starts by DeSclafani, and 5-2 across his past seven outings, too.

LHP Martin Perez has been a godsend for the Twins so far, posting a 5-1 record, 3.11 ERA and 46 strikeouts over 46 1/3 innings in seven starts and nine appearances. The under has cashed in four straight outings, although the over is actually 3-1 in his past four outings on the road. For the M's, they counter with LHP Marco Gonzales. Overall he is 5-2 with a 3.18 ERA and 42 strikeouts over 56 2/3 innings. He has shown some chinks in the armor recently, as the Jays are 0-3 across his past three outings, but the over is 3-1 over the past four contests.

Joey Gallo went deep among his four hits, and Hunter Pence also homered.

Royals manager Ned Yost used utility man Chris Owings on the mound the last two innings.

Lance Lynn (5-3) allowed one run and six hits in seven innings. Homer Bailey (4-4) gave up six runs - five earned - eight hits and four walks in 4 1/3 innings.

                              REDS 4, CUBS 2

CINCINNATI (AP) - Eugenio Suarez singled home the go-ahead run during a fifth-inning downpour and added another RBI single as the Reds pulled away from Chicago.

The Cubs came into the series on the best surge in the majors, having won or split 10 straight series. The NL Central leaders let a late lead get away Wednesday night for a 6-5, 10-inning loss. This one slipped away as the rain intensified in the bottom of the fifth.

Jose Quintana (4-3) gave up Jose Peraza's solo homer with one out, his first since April 26. After a pair of singles, Quintana threw back-to-back wild pitches that let in a run with two outs. Suarez's single made it 3-2. He added another RBI single in the seventh.

Luis Castillo (5-1) gave up two runs on two hits and a walk, all in the first inning.

Chicago's Kris Bryant walked in his first plate appearance, extending his career-best streak to 25 games reaching base safely.

                              BRAVES 10, CARDINALS 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Austin Riley went 3 for 4 and drove in a run, Julio Teheran pitched five-plus scoreless innings and Atlanta won for the fifth time in six games.

Riley, who homered in his second major league at-bat Wednesday, doubled off the top of the wall in the second inning and singled in a run in the third. He scored twice.

Teheran (3-4) allowed two hits - a bloop single by Yadier Molina to begin the fifth and a single by Paul Goldschmidt to begin the sixth - and drove in two runs with a sacrifice bunt in the second and a single in the third. Teheran, who has a 0.53 ERA over his last three starts, walked four and struck out four.

St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright (3-4) gave up five runs, five hits and five walks with two strikeouts in four innings. Marcel Ozuna and Matt Carpenter hit solo homers for the Cardinals.

                              INDIANS 14, ORIOLES 7

CLEVELAND (AP) - Jason Kipnis homered twice and drove in a career-high six runs as Cleveland hammered Baltimore in the opener of a four-game series.

Kipnis hit a solo shot in the first inning, a three-run homer in the fourth off reliever Gabriel Ynoa (0-1) and was credited with two RBIs on an unusual fielder's choice in the seventh.

Cleveland trailed 5-1 before rallying, falling behind and then taking the lead for good on Carlos Santana's RBI single in the sixth. The Indians broke it open with five runs in the seventh.

Trey Mancini hit a three-run homer and Rio Ruiz had a two-run drive for the Orioles, who have lost seven of eight.

A.J. Cole (1-1) replaced starter Trevor Bauer in the sixth and picked up his first win for the Indians, whose bats have finally awakened in the past two games.

WHITE SOX 4, BLUE JAYS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Yolmer Sanchez scored the tiebreaking run on Ryan Cordell's suicide squeeze in the eighth inning, and Chicago topped Toronto for its fourth win in five games.

With runners at the corners and the infield in, Cordell bunted to the first base side. Blue Jays reliever Derek Law (0-1) threw to catcher Danny Jansen, but Sanchez slid under the tag to give Cordell his second RBI of the game.

Charlie Tilson then scored from third on Leury Garcia's sacrifice fly. Tilson was originally ruled out on Billy McKinney's throw, but the call was overturned following a replay review.

Kelvin Herrera (1-2) pitched around two walks in a scoreless eighth. Alex Colome earned his ninth save in nine chances, completing a two-hitter.

Freddy Galvis hit a solo homer, but the Blue Jays lost for the fourth time in five games.
