Seattle Slew Of Runs?

The Texas Rangers have recalled LHP Taylor Hearn from Triple-A to make his major league debut on Thursday night opposite Mariners LHP Marco Gonzales at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. The Rangers originally wanted to keep their Top 10 prospect from making the bigs until around or after the All-Star break, but they used RHP Adrian Sampson in relief on Wednesday, and they decided to pull the trigger on Hearn now. The over has connected in four of the past five games for the Rangers inside the American League West Division, and it has hit in five of the past six games against teams with a winning record, too. The over is also 4-0 in the past four following a loss for Texas. And, for whatever it's worth, the over is 7-1 in the past eight games on a Thursday for the Rangers.

The over has connected in six straight home games for the Mariners against a left-handed starting pitcher, while going 6-0 in their past six overall vs. LHP, too. In addition, the M's have gotten off to a high-scoring start lately, hitting the over in Game 1 in each of their past six series. The over hasn't been popular in starts by LHP Marco Gonzales, however, as the under is 3-0-1 in his past four starts, while going 4-1 in the past five home outings by Gonzo. There is a 75 percent or greater chance of rain at 7 p.m. ET, although the chances taper off to 20 percent by 11 p.m. It might be a late night in Washington, or the game could also be rescheduled. If they do play, there will be a 13-16 mph wind blowing in from the left-center field power alley into the face of the batters.

The Brewers and Mets will likely be rained out, too, with a 60 percent or greater chance of rain from 7 p.m. onward. If they do play, the winds are blowing out from 15-18 mph to left field. They'll have clear conditions in Atlanta for the Rockies-Braves game, with a jetstream blowing to left-center field at a 11-14 mph clip. Luis Castillo, Cincinnati Reds (2-1, 1.47 ERA, $84): It looks like 2019 could be the breakout campaign for the Reds electric right-hander. Castillo has been nearly unhittable this season, limiting opponents with a 0.88 WHIP and a .250 on base percentage, while racking up 41 punch outs. Castillo will look to stay hot as he and the Reds host the Braves tonight. The Reds are currently -138 faves with a total of 9.

SLUMPING

Jordan Zimmermann, Detroit Tigers (0-3, 4.94 ERA, $20): Zimmermann has cooled off after a hot start to the season. The Tigers have lost his last three starts thanks to his 9.22 ERA and 1.83 WHIP in those games. He’ll look to get back on track when he and the Tigers visit the Red Sox tonight. CALLING IT TIGHT

Umpire Phil Cuzzi has been a pitcher’s dream early on this season. He is ringing up almost five times as many batters as he gives passes to first base and has a very high 64.5 percent strike rate. The Under has gone a perfect 4-0 in the games where he been behind home plate as a result. He will be calling balls and strikes tonight in Cincinnati when the Reds host the Braves. The total is currently 9.

A PAIR OF PUNCHOUT PITCHERS

Two of the best strikeout artists in the game do battle tonight in Houston as the Astros’ Gerrit Cole faces off against the Indians’ Trevor Bauer. The two right-handed hurlers rank second and fifth respectively in the MLB in strikeouts this season. The total for tonight’s matchup is currently 7.5, but keep an eye out for any strikeout props as well.

TRUE TO THE BLUE BLUES

The Mariners burst out of the gates winning 13 of their first 15 games thanks to some ridiculously hot hitting, but things have cooled off significantly since then, especially at home. The M’s have now dropped nine of their past 12 including six straight at home where they scored just 2.5 runs per game. Now, that was against the Astros and Indians and tonight’s opponent, the Rangers are not on their level. The Mariners are currently -154 favorites with a total of 8.5.

Dodgers spoil Jon Lester's return, beat Cubs 2-1

CHICAGO (AP) The Los Angeles Dodgers spoiled Jon Lester's return to the Cubs' rotation by scoring on an error and a sacrifice fly, beating Chicago 2-1 on Thursday to avoid a three-game sweep.

Lester (1-1), who spent 16 days on the injured list with a left hamstring strain, allowed one run on four hits in five innings.

Cody Bellinger drove in the Dodgers' second run with a sacrifice fly off Kyle Ryan in the eighth after Los Angeles loaded the bases with two walks and a hit batter. It was Bellinger's 31st RBI of the season, tying Milwaukee's Christian Yelich for the most in the majors. Bellinger went 1 for 2, raising his major league-leading batting average to .426.

Pedro Baez (2-1) struck out three in 1 1/3 innings for the win. Kenley Jansen allowed Albert Almora Jr.'s homer in the ninth but got the final three outs for his eighth save.

Ross Stripling allowed five hits and struck out six, throwing 76 pitches in his 4 2/3 scoreless innings.

DIAMONDBACKS 5, PIRATES 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Zack Greinke and two relievers allowed five hits as Arizona completed a four-game sweep of Pittsburgh.

It was the second shutout of the season for the Diamondbacks, who improved to 15-11 and moved into a tie for first place in the NL West. It was Arizona's second consecutive four-game sweep in Pittsburgh and 10th straight win overall at PNC Park.

Greinke (4-1) struck out seven in seven innings and gave up just two hits.

The Arizona had five extra-base hits off Pirates starter Jameson Taillon (1-3), all of which went to right field. Taillon lasted five innings and allowed a season-high five earned runs on six hits. He struck out five.

Andrew Chafin worked around two hits in the eighth and Yoshihisa Hirano finished the shutout in the ninth.

RED SOX 7, TIGERS 3

BOSTON (AP) - Michael Chavis hit a two-run homer, Rick Porcello got his first win of the season and Boston beat Detroit.

Andrew Benintendi and Mookie Betts had two doubles apiece for Boston, and Rafael Devers hit a two-run double as the Red Sox had a season-high seven extra-base hits.

Nicholas Castellanos hit a two-run homer for the Tigers, who swept a doubleheader Tuesday but left their only visit to Boston this season with a four-game split.

Porcello (1-3) struck out five and allowed three runs, six hits and two walks in six innings. It was the fifth start of the season for the 2016 AL Cy Young Award winner, who missed out on a victory in his last start because of a blown save.

Jordan Zimmermann (0-4) allowed five runs and five hits in three innings. He walked three and struck out two.

MARLINS 3, PHILLIES 1, 10 INNINGS

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Starlin Castro hit a two-run homer with two outs in the 10th inning to lift Miami past Philadelphia.

Marlins starter Caleb Smith gave up one run and three hits, striking out eight in six innings and five relievers pitched four scoreless innings.

Phillies left fielder Nick Williams made a perfect one-hop throw to the plate to prevent Miguel Rojas from scoring from second on Isaac Galloway's single to end the top of the ninth.

Castro connected off Hector Neris (0-1) after Neil Walker lined a double off the left-field wall.

Tayron Guerrero (1-0) pitched a perfect ninth for the win. Sergio Romo finished for his third save in four tries.

Phillies ace Aaron Nola allowed one run and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings in his best start since the season opener.

Miami has won four of six, yet is tied with Kansas City for the worst record in the majors at 8-17.

Sean Rodriguez hit a solo homer for the Phillies, who have lost six of eight after an 11-6 start.

INDIANS 2, ASTROS 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Trevor Bauer threw eight strong innings, Leonys Martin and Jake Bauers homered off Gerrit Cole, and Cleveland beat Houston.

Bauer (3-1) allowed one run, four hits and six walks while striking out three. He improved to 8-0 in his career against the Astros, including two wins against Cole, his former teammate at UCLA.

Martin got the first hit off Cole (1-4) with a solo homer in the third that just made it over the right field wall. Bauers led off the fifth with a solo home run to give Cleveland a 2-1 lead.

Brad Hand pitched the ninth for his seventh save.

Cole surrendered two runs and three hits with 10 strikeouts in seven innings.

REDS 4, BRAVES 2

CINCINNATI (AP) - Reliever David Hernandez struck out three straight with the bases loaded, Eugenio Suarez drove in three and Cincinnati beat Atlanta in a rain-delayed victory and won for the second time in the three-game series.

Luis Castillo pitched six scoreless innings for the Reds but loaded the bases to start the seventh. Hernandez relieved and struck out Dansby Swanson, Ender Inciarte and Ozzie Albies to maintain a 3-0 lead.

Freddie Freeman hit a two-run homer for Atlanta. Raisel Iglesias got the final five outs for his sixth save.

The game was delayed 2 hours, 42 minutes by rain in the middle of the seventh.

Castillo (3-1) allowed a season-high five hits over the first three innings but retired nine straight before getting into trouble in the seventh.

Julio Teheran (2-3) pitched six innings, allowing five hits and three runs with three walks and seven strikeouts. He also hit a batter.

Friday’s List of 13: Notes from watching the NFL Draft

13) Washington Redskins stayed at pick #15 and got QB Dwayne Haskins without trading up; Haskins is from Maryland, but grew up in New Jersey and was a Giant fan. Most people didn’t think Haskins would drop to the 15th pick; the Giants-Redskins games for the next decade should be pretty interesting.

This pretty much clinches fact that Case Keenum won’t be a Redskin in 2020; Washington will be his 4th team in four years this season, and 2020 figures to make it five teams in five years.

12) Bruce Snyder bought the Redskins in 1999. Here is how many head coaches each NFC East team has had since then:
— Washington 7
— Dallas 4
— NJ Giants 4
— Philadelphia 3

When I think of a team with a coach on the hot seat taking a rookie QB, I think of Jeff Fisher getting canned during Jared Goff’s rookie year. Keenum was the Rams’ starting QB before Goff took over in Game 10. You wonder if this is good news for Jay Gruden.


11) New Jersey Giants took Duke QB Daniel Jones with the 6th pick in the draft. Here is what the Giants have done with drafting QB’s the last three years:

2017: Davis Webb, California, 3rd round
2018: Kyle Lauletta, Richmond, 4th round
2019: Daniel Jones, Duke, 1st round

Meanwhile, they keep starting 38-year old Eli Manning, who had the same college coach as Jones (David Cutcliffe). Most draft pundits liked Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins better than Jones.

Last six years, Giants are 38-59, 0-1 in playoff games. Hard to get better when you waste 3rd and 4th round draft picks on guys you never use.

10) Pittsburgh Steelers traded with Denver to move up ten spots, from #20 to #10 in the first round; this is something the Steelers rarely do. Pittsburgh took LB Devin Bush from Michigan.

Steelers switched 1st round picks with Denver, and also gave the Broncos a 2nd-round and a 3rd-round pick, so it was expensive- they really wanted/needed a linebacker.

9) Last three years, the draft averaged six first-round trades per year; there were seven trades during Thursday’s first round.

— Green Bay traded with Seattle to move up seven spots, from #28 to #21.
— Eagles traded a 4th and 6th-round pick to Baltimore to move up from 25th to 22nd.
— Washington traded to the Colts to move up to the 26th pick.
— Chiefs acquired DE Frank Clark from Seattle, send the Seahawks the 29th pick, plus a couple of other picks.
— Giants acquired the 30th pick in the draft from Seattle so they could take CB Deandre Baker from Georgia.
— Rams traded the 31st pick to Atlanta so the Falcons could take T Kaleb McGary from Washington.

8) Only six of 22 Seahawks starters remain from when Seattle lost the Super Bowl to New England four years ago.

7) Only twice in the common draft era (1990, 2008) had the first round ended with no WR’s taken. This was the third time. Iowa had two tight ends taken in the first round. Baltimore finally took Oklahoma WR Marquise Brown with the 25th pick.

This is the longest any NFL Draft has gone with neither a WR or a RB being taken. Oakland took RB Josh Jacobs from Alabama with the 24th pick.

6) Seven of the top ten players taken were defensive players.

5) As of 1:00 Thursday afternoon, 18 of 32 teams had already traded their 7th-round pick in this draft. Three picks were traded twice; one was dealt three times. 7th-round picks are throw-ins in lot of trades.

Then again, Marques Colston, Adam Timmerman, Shannon Sharpe and Gary Anderson (the kicker) were all 7th-round picks.

4) Bengals still have 37 of their own draft picks on their roster, most in NFL, six more than any other team; Buffalo has only 12 of its draft picks, least in the league.

3) People gamble on the NFL Draft, which makes me a little queasy, but thats their business. Haskins was a -$155 favorite to get drafted before Missouri QB Drew Lock.

Speaking of gambling, a guy on ESPN’s Daily Wager Thursday picked Starlin Castro to homer at 8-1 odds in the Marlins’ game in Philly, and sure enough, Castro homered in the 10th inning. Damn good call.

2) Not sure why ESPN and NFL Network both broadcast the draft, but they do. Mel Kiper Jr is worth listening to, and Louis Riddick is very good on ESPN. My man Kurt Warner is on NFL Network, but I prefer Trey Wingo to Rich Eisen as a host, so spent most of my time on ESPN.

The player interviews are generally all terrible, so if one is happening, automatically change to the other station or to a baseball game.
