Red Sox, Bogaerts agree at $132M deal
      March 31, 2019
      By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts has agreed to terms on a new contract that would keep him in Boston through 2025 and guarantee him $132 million, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Sunday night.

Bogaerts will earn $12 million this year under the terms of his existing deal and then $20 million for each of the next six seasons, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the agreement had not yet been announced.

Another person familiar with the deal told the AP the deal includes a team option for 2026 at $20 million, which becomes guaranteed if he has 535 plate appearances in 2025. Bogaerts also has an opt-out clause after 2022.

The talks were first reported by WEEI.

Bogaerts hit .288 last year and set career bests with 23 homers and 103 RBIs while helping the Red Sox win a franchise-record 108 games in the regular season and a World Series championship. The 26-year-old native of Aruba finished 13th in the AL MVP voting.

It's the second time in eight days the team has made a big commitment to a player that helped it win a third straight AL East title and fourth World Series since 2004. Left-hander Chris Sale signed a deal that will guarantee him $160 million over the next six seasons.

Reigning AL MVP Mookie Betts is eligible for salary arbitration after this season and for free agency after 2020, when he will be still be just 28. He will earn $20 million this year.

        Monday’s 6-pack

How NCAA tournament prop bets fared:

        — #4 seeds- 5.5 wins. Finished at 5; K-State’s 1st round loss was a crusher. UNDER

        — #5 seeds- 4.5 wins. Sitting at 4, with Auburn alive- they have all four wins.

        — #6-seeds- 4.5 wins. Finished at 3. UNDER

        — #7-seeds: 3.5 wins. Finished at 1. Wofford got only win. UNDER

        — #8-seeds: 2.5 wins. Got shut out by the 9-seeds. UNDER

        — #9-seeds: 2 wins: Went 4-0 in first round. OVER

        Quote of the Day
“I’ll miss coming to practice and seeing my brothers- and especially coach Williams.”
        North Carolina senior Luke Maye

        Monday’s quiz
When was the last year only one #1-seed got to the Final Four?

        Sunday’s quiz
Tony Bennett’s father Dick Bennett got to the 2000 Final Four coaching Wisconsin.

        Saturday’s quiz
Colts were based in Baltimore before moving to Indianapolis.

        ******************************

Monday’s List of 13: Happy April Fools’ Day

        13) Auburn 77, Kentucky 71 OT— Last time they played, Kentucky beat Auburn by 27. Not this time, and Charles Barkley’s alma mater is going to the Final Four for the first time. Auburn beat Kansas, North Carolina and Kentucky in its last three games; not bad.

Kentucky poached Stanford’s best player (a senior) and surrounded him with three freshmen and a sophomore; college basketball has become more like baseball, where kids jump to where they think the grass is greener, trying to get to the NBA.

Sometimes that grass is greener, sometimes it isn’t. You can get to the NBA from anywhere.

        12) Nine of the 16 coaches in the Sweet 16 had already been to a Final Four. Chris Beard, Bruce Pearl and Tony Bennett will all be going to their first one.

        11) Michigan State 68, Duke 67— Spartans trailed by 9 in first half, by 3 with 1:51 left, but survived 2-6 shooting on the foul line to get their first Final Four since 2015.

        Final Four is a #1-seed, #2-seed, #3-seed, #5-seed.

        10) San Francisco 49ers sold two seats inside their War Room on draft night to two people who paid $11,000 each for that experience. The $22,000 will supposedly go to a charity.

        9) SI.com did a survey of NFL scouts about which colleges are the best ones to visit when they evaluate players, and Alabama was far and away chosen as the most accommodating.

On Alabama’s 2012 team, all 22 starters played in the NFL. I’m guessing that hasn’t happened much. It also helps recruiting.

        8) West Virginia F Lamont West is transferring to Missouri State, which is not a step up or even a lateral move, but he should score more than the 12.1 ppg he averaged LY, starting 20 of the 36 Mountaineer games.

        7) Over half the NFL owners (17 of 32) inherited their teams. Only seven of 30 NBA owners inherited their team.

        6) In 20 games for Milwaukee against the Cardinals. Christian Yelich has 10 homers, 23 RBI and 22 runs scored.

        5) If I’m a Philadelphia Eagles fan, and I hear coach Doug Pederson say “Carson Wentz has it in him to be a better teammate” well, that would worry me. The last thing you should be worrying about is if your quarterback is a good teammate.

        4) Dodgers 18, Diamondbacks 5— Third game of the season Saturday night, and Arizona used a catcher to pitch the 7th/8th innings. Seriously, in the third game of the year?

Then the Dodgers let catcher Russell Martin pitch the 9th inning, when they were winning, albeit 18-5. When was last time both teams used a position player to pitch in same game?

        3) Minnesota Twins’ starters Berrios/Odorizzi both struck out 10+ guys in their first start, just 2nd time EVER a team had that happen in their first two games of a season. Diamondbacks in 2001 also did it, with Randy Johnson/Curt Schilling.

        2) San Diego Padres’ rookie pitcher Chris Paddack was thrown out at first base by the RF on what appeared to be a sharp single to right in his first MLB at-bat, with the bases loaded. I’m guessing that hasn’t happened very often.

        1) Orlando 34, Memphis 31— Memphis was up 31-28 with 2:40 left on a rainy day; the snap goes right through the punter’s hands, and Orlando gets the wet ball on the 26-yard line and wins the game.

Refs missed a delay of game penalty on Orlando on the last play before the 2:00 warning, and Mike Singletary went off, getting two unsportsmanlike penalties during the 2:00 warning. Had the feel of a semi-pro game, which isn’t a good look for a new league.

          Giant Fade

The San Francisco Giants have been a great parlay fade lately, betting against their futility while taking the 'under'. Over the past 14 games, the Giants have won just twice while the 'under' is 12-2 during the stretch, too. The Giants have lost AND the 'under' on 10 separate occasions during the 14-game streak.

That streak will be put to the test, as the Giants take it on the road to face the last-place San Diego Padres. LHP Andrew Suarez will take the ball for San Francisco, while RHP Bryan Mitchell works for the Fathers. The Giants have won just twice over their past 14 games on the road, and they're a dismal 1-8 across the past nine outings vs. RHP. The Giants haven't had a lot of luck inside the division, either, going just 2-5 in their past seven against NL West foes. The only good thing going for the Giants lately has been Suarez, and San Francicso has won four of the past five when the lefty kicks off a new series. The 'under' is 25-7-2 in the past 34 for the Giants against NL West clubs, too, while going 3-0-1 in Suarez's past four outings. The under is also 6-1-1 in his past eight assignments against divisional opponents.

          Looking Ahead

          Monday, April 1

The Cardinals and Pirates will square off in matinee action. Since the start of the 2016 season RHP Adam Wainwright has posted a 2-1 record, 4.56 ERA across 47 1/3 innings in eight starts and a relief appearance against the Pirates. More importantly, the Cardinals are 6-1 in his past seven starts against the Pirates, and St. Louis has won four of the past five in the Steel City. The total is also 20-7-5 in Waino's past 32 starts against the Bucs, while going 8-3-2 across his past 13 road outings in Pittsburgh.

The Orioles and Blue Jays tangle in Toronto, and it's David Hess against Sean Reid-Foley. Baltimore surprised by taking two of three from the Yankees in the Bronx. The Blue Jays split a four-game series aginst the Tigers while hitting the 'under' in all four games. The O's were horrific on the road last season, and they're 9-51 in the past 60 road games vs. RHP. In addition, they won just two of the past 16 starts by Hess, while going 1-11 in his past 12 on the road. Toronto won 12 of their past 16 against Baltimore, and they're have a .696 winning percentage (71-31) across the past 102 meetings vs. the O's.

Rangers LHP Drew Smyly makes his return to a major league hill for the first time since the 2016, as Tommy John surgery has wiped out his past two seasons. You can probably expect some rust. Meanwhile, Diamondbacks RHP Merrill Kelly won a job in the Arizona rotation during spring training after spending the past three seasons in the KBO (South Korea). The Padres will be looking to treat him rudely, building upon their 3-1 start.

The Angels hit the road to meet the Mariners at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. The Mariners rolled up big offensive numbers in their first series against the Boston Red Sox. And the experts all said this would be a down year for the Seattle offense after an offseason purge. They'll roll the dice with Felix Hernandez on Monday, a pitcher who has lost quite a bit of velocity in recent seasons. He has had his troubles against superstar Mike Trout, too, as the Angels outfielder is hitting .373 with four doubles, two triples and eight home runs with 20 RBI and .373/.419/.759 slash line across 83 at-bats. Something's gotta give in this one, as the Angels are 1-5 in their past six trips to Seattle, while the Mariners are 2-7 in Hernandez's past nine starts against the Angels. The over has hit in four of Felix's past five vs. LAA, while going 5-2-1 in the past eight meetings overall in Seattle.

          Weather Report

The weather forecast is wonderful for Monday. Three games will be indoors and/or in stadiums with a retractable roof, and all other cities will have a 10 percent chance or less of precipitation. The winds will be rather tranquil, too, blowing at 8 mph or less in all cities.

          Tuesday, April 2

Max Scherzer takes the ball for the Nats, and he'll be facing a Phillies team which plucked his former teammate, Bryce Harper, off of the waiver wire. Scherzer is 5-1 with a 2.85 ERA, 96 strikeouts and a .207 opponent batting average over 72 2/3 innings in 11 starts against the Phillies since the start of the 2016, so we'll see if Harper can help tip the scales against him. Also, watch the weather in this one, as Zach Eflin and Scherzer could have rain interrupt their evenings. Odubel Herrera has been a thorn in Scherzer's side, too, hitting .341 (14-for-41) with three doubles, a triple and to home runs with a 1.035 OPS in his career. J.T. Realmuto is the complete opposite, going 3-for-36 (.083) with one double, a solo homer, one RBI and 11 strikeouts vs. Scherzer.

Jose Berrios looked good in the Opening Day start against Cleveland at Target Field, but can he carry the momentum into Kansas City? The Twins are just 5-21 across his past 26 road starts, and 2-15 in his past 17 road outings against a team with a winning record. Meanwhile, the Royals are 5-0 in Brad Keller's past five home starts, and 5-1 in his past six assignments against AL Central foes. The Twins are also 0-5 in Berrios' past five road starts in K.C., and 2-7 in his past nine overall against the Royals.

Justin Verlander will take on the Rangers, and he went 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA, 14 strikeouts and a .209 opponent batting average in two starts at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington last season. He was 2-2 with a 2.03 ERA in five starts overal against the Rangers, and Texas batters hit just .196 against him with 39 strikeouts over 31 innings.

          Weather Report

The forecast calls for a 45 percent chance of rain during the Phillies-Nationals game, lightening up around 11pm ET. This game could be interrupted or even start with the tarpaulin, so the listed pitchers could either start late or have their starts cut short. In Texas the weather will be blowing in from right-center field into the face of the batters at a 14 mph clip, which should keep scores down. In Oakland it's the exact opposite, with winds blowing 10-13 mph to the right-center field power alley for Red Sox-A's. The same holds true for the Giants-Dodgers game in L.A., blowing out to right at 10-13 mph.

Yanks beat Tigers, lose Stanton and Andujar to injuries
                      April 1, 2019
                      By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Domingo German overcame control problems on a chilly night to win for the first time since last June, Gary Sanchez and Brett Gardner homered and the banged-up New York Yankees beat the punchless Detroit Tigers 3-1 Monday.

Aaron Judge made a sprawling, backhand catch on Niko Goodrum's hard-hit liner after Adam Ottavino walked the first two batters in the eighth inning, a drive that would have tied the score if it had gotten by the right fielder.

New York lost two more regulars to the 10-day injured list before the game after they got hurt a day earlier, outfielder Giancarlo Stanton with a strained left biceps and third baseman Miguel Andujar with a small labrum tear in his right shoulder.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Andujar, runner-up for AL Rookie of the Year last season, will be treated conservatively with a rehab program and there is some optimism he will respond well. But if not, he could need seasno-surgery.

They joined a group of sidelined Yankees that includes pitchers Luis Severino, Dellin Betances and Jordan Montgomery, shortstop Didi Gregorius and outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury; pitcher CC Sabathia is set to join them Wednesday, after he completes a suspension for hitting a batter with a pitch last September.

German (1-0) pitched five scoreless innings, striking out seven and walking five. Aroldis Chapman got his first save.

Tyson Ross (0-1) allowed three runs, two earned, in five innings.

                      ORIOLES 6, BLUE JAYS 5

TORONTO (AP) - David Hess was pulled after 6 1/3 hitless innings, but Baltimore's bullpen couldn't see the bid through in a win over Toronto.

Hess struck out eight and walked one before first-year manager Brandon Hyde pulled him after 82 pitches. Reliever Pedro Araujo walked Justin Smoak, and then allowed a two-run homer to Randal Grichuk for Toronto's first hit.

Jonathan Villar and Trey Mancini homered for Baltimore, which won its third straight, including the last two of its season-opening series against the New York Yankees. Left-hander Richard Bleier picked up his first save of the season.

It was the second time this season the Blue Jays have been no-hit into the seventh inning. Detroit right-hander Jordan Zimmermann retired 20 Toronto batters on opening day before Teoscar Hernandez singled to end his perfect game.

After a team-record 24 consecutive scoreless innings from the Blue Jays starters to begin the season, things unraveled early for Sean Reid-Foley (0-1). Recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to make his eighth career start, he endured a rough outing, giving up five hits and five runs, three earned, while walking two and striking out three in two innings.

                      METS 7, MARLINS 3

MIAMI (AP) - Rookie slugger Pete Alonso hit his first major league homer, a three-run shot to cap a four-run ninth inning, and New York overcame 16 strikeouts by its hitters to rally past Miami.

Juan Lagares hit his first homer since Sept. 7, 2017 and sparked the ninth-inning rally when he was hit by a two-strike pitch trying to bunt.

Mets starter Steven Matz allowed three runs, one earned, in 5 1/3 innings. Three relievers blanked Miami over the final 3 2/3 innings, and Jeurys Familia (1-0) pitched a perfect eighth.

The Marlins loaded the bases with none out in the ninth against closer Edwin Diaz, who struck out the next three batters.

Starlin Castro hit a two-run homer for Miami, his first, and added an RBI single.

With the score 3-all, Mets pinch hitter Dominic Smith singled to start the ninth. Drew Steckenrider (0-1) then came inside on Lagares as he squared to bunt, hitting him on the right hand. Lagares missed most of last season due to a toe injury.

                      BREWERS 4, REDS 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Christian Yelich failed to homer for the first time this season, ending his record-tying streak, but he doubled in the ninth and scored on Ryan Braun's double as Milwaukee rallied for a victory before the smallest crowd in Great American Ball Park history.

Yelich had homered in each of Milwaukee's first four games, tying the major league record shared by Willie Mays (1971), Mark McGwire (1998), Nelson Cruz (2011), Chris Davis (2013) and Trevor Story (2016). On Monday, his only hit set up the Brewers' fourth win in five games.

The NL MVP doubled with two outs in the ninth off Raisel Iglesias (0-1) and came around on Braun's second double of the game.

Alex Wilson (1-0) allowed one hit over 1 2/3 innings. Josh Hader gave up a double in the ninth before getting his third save in three chances.

                      ASTROS 2, RANGERS 1

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Brad Peacock allowed two hits while pitching into the seventh inning, Robinson Chirinos looped a go-ahead double in his first game against his former team and Houston beat Texas.

Houston's George Springer connected for his 25th career leadoff homer against Drew Smyly, who was making his first major league start since the end of the 2016 season.

Peacock (1-0) pitched without a baserunner through six innings, allowing only Ronald Guzman's first homer leading off the third. Rougned Odor reached on an infield single to start the seventh, but was thrown out trying to steal by Chirinos. Peacock struck out five in 6 2/3 innings.

Roberto Osuna pitching a perfect ninth for his first save. The Astros bounced back after the two-time defending AL West champions lost three of four at Tampa Bay to open the season.

Adrian Sampson (0-1) allowed four hits and a run over the final six innings for the Rangers.

                      BRAVES 8, CUBS 0

ATLANTA (AP) - Brian McCann made the most of his Atlanta homecoming by hitting a two-run single in a four-run first inning, and the Braves took advantage of six Chicago errors.

After being swept in their first series at Philadelphia, the Braves became the final major league team to win a game. Ender Inciarte and Ronald Acuna Jr. homered off Kyle Hendricks (0-1).

Hendricks gave up seven runs, two earned, on 10 hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings. The right-hander's 2019 debut came after he agreed to a four-year extension last week that added $55.5 million to his contract through 2023.

Wes Parsons (1-1) threw one perfect inning in relief of Sean Newcomb for his first career win.

                      CARDINALS 6, PIRATES 5, 11 INNINGS

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Paul DeJong scored on a passed ball in the top of the 11th inning as St. Louis rallied past Pittsburgh to spoil the Pirates' home opener.

The Cardinals came back twice against Pittsburgh's erratic bullpen, tying it in the eighth and again in the ninth.

DeJong put St. Louis in front for the first time when he singled off Steven Brault (0-1) with two outs in the 11th, moved to third after a hit by pitch and a walk and then raced home when Nick Kingham's fastball squirted past Pirates catcher Francisco Cervelli.

Jordan Hicks (1-1) worked two scoreless innings. John Gant picked up the save despite issuing a one-out walk to finish a sloppy 4-hour, 53-minute marathon that featured 16 pitchers, 16 walks, four hit batters, three errors and two home plate umpires. Crew chief Jerry Layne left in the seventh after taking a ball off the mask and was replaced by Vic Carapazza.

                      INDIANS 5, WHITE SOX 3

CLEVELAND (AP) - Roberto Perez drew a bases-loaded walk on four pitches from Dylan Covey in the eighth inning as Cleveland rallied for a chilly win in its home opener.

The Indians scored four runs in the eighth after nearly wasting starter Mike Clevinger's dominant performance. Clevinger allowed one hit in seven innings, striking out 12.

After the dreadful outing by Covey (0-1), Caleb Frare came in and walked pinch-hitter Greg Allen on five pitches to force in another run and give the Indians a 5-3 lead.

Cleveland's Jon Edwards (2-0) picked up the win despite giving up a two-run homer to White Sox rookie Ryan Cordell in the eighth. Brad Hand worked the ninth for his second save.

                      RAYS 7, ROCKIES 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Brandon Lowe and Kevin Kiermaier homered to back a strong performance by Tampa Bay's bullpen.

Employing the opener strategy for the first time this season, the Rays won for the fourth straight time since a season-opening loss to Houston - matching the best five-game start in franchise history.

Opener Ryne Stanek got it started before a crowd of 10,860, with Ryan Yarbrough (1-0) following and allowing one run and three hits over 4 2/3 innings. Relievers Wilmer Font, Jalen Beeks, Jose Alvarado and Diego Castillo finished up.

Lowe hit a two-run homer in the fourth and Kiermaier added a three-run shot in the sixth to inflict most of the damage against Colorado starter Chad Bettis (0-1), who allowed six runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.

                      GIANTS 4, DODGERS 2

                      DBACKS 10, PADRES 3

                      A'S 7, RED SOX 0

                      MARINERS 6, ANGELS 3

                          Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

                          — If you bet $100 on the Orioles in their first four games, you’d already be up $635.

                          — Tampa Bay (4-1) leads the Orioles (3-1) by a half-game atop the AL East.

                          — South Florida 63, DePaul 61— Bulls lead best-of-3 series, 1-0.

                          — Of the 17 NFL referees in 2014, only six of them still work in the NFL.

                          — Knicks 113, Bulls 105— Knicks cover as home favorite for 1st time since Nov. 7.

                          — Wonder how much it costs to open/close the roof at Marlins’ Park?

                          **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

                          13) Being involved in fantasy baseball and handicapping baseball teaches you patience; it is a very long season. There is a tendency to overreact to stuff that happens in the first week of the season, but as the cliche goes, it is a marathon, not a sprint.

                          12) Go through this every year; baseball players get hurt.
                          — Giancarlo Stanton (biceps strain) goes on the IL.
                          — 3B Miguel Andujar (labrum tear in shoulder) also went on the IL.
                          — Rays put 3B Joey Wendle (hamstring) on IL.
                          — Toronto put P Clayton Richard (knee) on IL.

                          11) Cardinals 6, Pirates 5 (11)— Chris Archer threw five shutout innings, bullpen blew a 4-0 lead. Archer threw 99 pitches in those five innings. Pirates wound up using eight relievers over the last six innings.

                          10) Orioles 6, Blue Jays 5— David Hess threw 6.1 hitless innings (82 pitches), then was taken out of the game. Toronto quickly scored two runs; Orioles hung on for dear life.

                          9) Braves 8, Cubs 0— Chicago made five errors in first five innings of this game; they’ve lost the last three days, giving up 26 runs. Rough start to the season.

                          8) Mets 7, Marlins 3— Pete Alonso hit his first major league homer, a 440-foot blast, in front of 6,489 fans, most of whom were rooting for the visitors from New York.

                          7) Belmont basketball coach Rick Byrd is retiring after coaching the Bruins for 33 years. Byrd won 805 games and made NCAA tournament eight times.

Belmont led the country in 2-point FG% in five of the last seven seasons.

                          6) If you bet on AAF games, some info thru eight weeks:
                          — Favorites are 22-10 SU, 16-16 vs spread
                          — Home teams are 18-14 SU, 16-16 vs spread.
                          — Under is 18-13-1.

                          5) Red Sox signed SS Xander Bogaerts to a 7-year, $132M contract extension.

                          4) There is a new minor league team this year, the Amarillo Sod Poodles, AA affiliate of the San Diego Padres. Minor league nicknames are getting weirder and weirder.

                          3) Phillies had four sellouts all of last year; after three home games this season, they’ve already had three sellouts. Curious to see what kind of reaction Bryce Harper gets in Washington when the Phillies play there tonight.

                          2) Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper has laid off one-third of its staff. 20 years ago, the paper had 340 journalists; now it’s down to 33.

                          1. Normal field for a PGA Tour event is 144 golfers, but The Masters has a different set of requirements. Right now, only 86 players have qualified for next week’s tournament, which would be the smallest field at Augusta since 1997.

                            Good Month/Bad Month Pitchers
                            Marc Lawrence

Major League Baseball trades places with March Madness as the sports flavor of the month in April. As we usher in America's favorite pastime, let's open the season with one of our favorite handicapping angles – good month pitchers.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team starts the last three seasons during the month of April. On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in April team starts, winning 33% percent or less of their efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each April over the last three years.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s April list (none this season). In addition also designated are the best and/or worst site results – home (H) or away (A) – within each pitcher’s April results.

I'll be back next month with May's Good Month Pitchers. Until then, it’s time to play ball!

                            GOOD MONTH PITCHERS

                            Hellickson, Jeremy • Washington Nationals • 9-4 / 5-2 A

In the offseason, Hellickson signed a deal to continue to pitch with Washington and is regarded as their fifth starter to begin the season. That means with off days he will probably miss a few early starts and that might be too bad for both him and the Nationals given his history of getting off to fast starts. Lacking overpowering stuff, Hellickson relies on command and getting ahead of hitters and last year threw 67 percent of first-pitch strikes to opposing hitters, to place the odds in his favor.
                            Lester, Jon • Chicago Cubs • 10-5 / 6-2 H

No longer having a mid-90's heater, Lester still knows how to pitch. The Cubs left-hander is now more reliant on his variety of curves and change-ups to keep hitters off balance and will still bust the fastball up and in with two strikes to further keep hitters guessing. Granted, Lester has pitched for a team that has won a lot of games in recent years, but his 50-19 record with a 3.33 ERA is still impressive the last three seasons as he reaches his mid-30's.

                            Morton, Charlie • Tampa Bay Rays • 10-5 / 8-2 H

Morton was given a second chance to revive his career in Houston and did he ever! Known as No.4 starter who was perpetually injured or ineffective in Pittsburgh, the Astros showed they know how to make pitchers better and healthier. Morton was 29-10 the last two years, with an ERA just over 3.30 and career-lows in WHIP of 1.19 and 1.16. At 35 and with World Series ring in hand, the right-hander took the money and moved to pitcher-starved Tampa Bay. There is little reason he won't be effective having the third-best fastball in the bigs last year at 96.6 MPH.

                            Porcello, Rick • Boston Red Sox • 11-4 / 7-2 H

Porcello won the Cy Young in 2016 and followed that up by trying to prove he was a different pitcher, getting away from what he does best. He finished 11-17 with a WHIP of 1.40, his highest in four years. With Chris Sale and a healthy David Price, Porcello returned to a middle of the rotation pitcher, of which he is ideally suited. Last offseason, Porcello was convinced to throw his slider more as hitters were sitting on his fastball and sinker and that gave him another pitch to return to being effective.

                            Wacha, Michael • St. Louis Cardinals • 9-4 / 7-1 H

After a breakout 2015 season in which Wacha was 17-7, he lost his way a bit. Last season, the Redbirds righty was having a super season after 15 starts with an 8-2 record, with an ERA of 3.20 and WHIP of 1.23, when disaster struck with an oblique strain, which ended his year. At 27 and having gone through an assortment of ailments the last three years, Wacha is probably no longer ace material but an excellent No. 2 or No. 3 starter in St. Louis with electric stuff that he just needs to stay within himself to be outstanding.

                            Cueto, Johnny • San Francisco Giants • 11-3 / 6-1 H

The San Francisco right-hander is still recovering from Tommy John surgery.

                            Martinez, Carlos • St. Louis Cardinals • 11-3 / 7-1 H

Coming off an injury-plagued 2018, Martinez was shut down to start spring training with shoulder weakness. The two-time All-Star and former St. Louis ace received a platelet-rich plasma injection which reportedly helped, but there is still no timetable for his return.

                            BAD MONTH PITCHERS

                            Wood, Alex • Cincinnati Reds • 4-9 / 2-7 A

Wood starts his new career in Cincinnati on the injured list with a back issue that flared up halfway thru spring training. The latest news on a return is later this month if not early May. In spite of having talent, he never made the Braves or Dodgers feel comfortable, other than when he was 16-3 in 2017, and even then, he was a not factor in the postseason that year. Playing for a far worse team in Cincinnati, expect him to struggle in the Reds bandbox compared to pitching in L.A.
