  • Turner's slam helps Nats sweep Phils, clinch wild card
    September 25, 2019
    By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) Trea Turner's go-ahead grand slam lifted Washington to a 6-5 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies for a doubleheader sweep Tuesday that helped the Nationals clinch an NL wild card, capping quite a turnaround for a team that was 19-31 in late May.

Turner had three hits in the day's first game, a 4-1 win for the Nationals. Washington assured itself of returning to the playoffs for the fifth time in eight years after sitting out October in 2018.

Anthony Rendon delivered two sacrifice flies to raise his majors-leading RBIs total to 124 in the opening victory, a result that also eliminated Philadelphia and $330 million outfielder Bryce Harper, the ex-Nationals star, from postseason contention.

In the nightcap, Washington trailed 4-2 entering the sixth, because Brad Miller managed to hit two homers off Max Scherzer (11-7).

Washington loaded the bases in the sixth against Aaron Nola (12-7) with two walks and a single, setting the stage for Turner's 18th homer of the season and second career slam, which came off Jared Hughes.

In the first game, Tanner Rainey (2-3) struck out two in a 1-2-3 sixth for the win in the makeup of a June 18 rainout. Nick Vincent (1-4) took the loss in the first game.

    DIAMONDBACKS 3, CARDINALS 2, 19 INNINGS

PHOENIX (AP) - Ildemaro Vargas had a game-tying pinch-hit homer in the ninth inning and then singled with the bases loaded in the 19th at 1:34 a.m. local time to lift Arizona past St. Louis.

Carson Kelly and Nick Ahmed started the final rally with back-to-back singles off John Brebbia (3-4), who was the Cardinals' 11th pitcher of the night. Jarrod Dyson and Robbie Ray - a pitcher who had to pinch hit - struck out before Christian Walker was intentionally walked to load the bases.

Then it was Vargas' turn to be the hero again, smacking a single - his fourth hit of the game - through the left side of the infield. He raised his hands as players rushed the field to celebrate.

The game last 6 hours and 53 minutes and featured 24 pitchers and 48 strikeouts, with both teams plowing through bullpen arms thanks to September's expanded rosters. The Diamondbacks used a franchise-record 30 players. It was the longest game by innings and time in Chase Field history.

Kevin Ginkel (3-0) pitched a scoreless inning for the win.

St. Louis had its lead in the NL Central cut to 2 1/2 games over Milwaukee. The Cardinals have four games remaining, while the Brewers have five.

    BREWERS 4, REDS 2

CINCINNATI (AP) - Ryan Braun added to his record total of homers at Great American Ball Park, and Milwaukee moved a step closer to a wild-card berth with its fifth win in a row.

Just like last season, when Milwaukee put on a late rush to take the NL Central title, the Brewers have closed in on a playoff spot with a September flourish. They've won 16 of 18, positioning themselves for one of the NL wild cards along with Washington. They can clinch Wednesday with a win or losses by the Cubs and Mets.

Braun connected for his 21st homer off Sonny Gray (11-8), making the final start of his All-Star season. Braun's 27 homers at Great American are the most by a visiting player.

Brent Suter (4-0) allowed three hits in three relief innings. Josh Hader allowed a pair of hits in the ninth before fanning Kyle Farmer for his 36th save in 42 chances.

    PIRATES 9, CUBS 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Freefalling Chicago committed five errors, including two in a seven-run seventh inning, and moved to the brink of elimination with its seventh straight loss.

Chicago dropped to 82-75 and would be eliminated with one more loss or Milwaukee win. The Cubs have not missed the playoffs since 2014.

Aided by a fielding error by second baseman Ben Zobrist and errant throw by reliever Danny Hultzen, the Pirates sent 13 batters to the plate in the seventh as they chased starter Kyle Hendricks (11-10) and erased a 1-0 deficit. Pittsburgh stopped a nine-game losing streak in which it had been outscored 87-26.

Francisco Liriano (5-3) pitched a perfect seventh. Pittsburgh rookie Mitch Keller gave up one run and seven hits in five innings.

    METS 5, MARLINS 4, 11 INNINGS

NEW YORK (AP) - Three outs from postseason elimination, New York tied it 4-all in the ninth when Michael Conforto clocked his second two-run homer of the game, connecting off Jose Urena for his 33rd long ball of the season. Brandon Nimmo won it by working a bases-loaded walk in the 11th against rookie Jeff Brigham.

After wins by Washington and Milwaukee earlier in the day, the Mets needed a victory to stay in the playoff race. They are tied with the plummeting Chicago Cubs, five games behind the Brewers for the second NL wild card with five to play.

Conforto drew a leadoff walk from Adam Conley (2-10) in the 11th, and Brigham hit Amed Rosario with a 97 mph fastball. A wild pitch advanced both runners before Todd Frazier was intentionally walked. One out later, Nimmo walked on a 3-1 pitch to force in the winning run.

Paul Sewald (1-1), the seventh Mets pitcher, struck out two in a perfect inning for his first major league win in his 119th appearance.

    TWINS 4, TIGERS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Willians Astudillo and Eddie Rosario fueled a four-run seventh inning, and Minnesota dodged an injury scare for starter Jake Odorizzi to move closer to an AL Central title.

Odorizzi (15-7) pitched two-hit ball through six innings but was pulled with a tight left hamstring after warming up for the seventh. He later said he had a cramp and expected to be fine.

The Twins improved to 97-60, their most victories since going 98-64 in 1970. Minnesota's magic number to clinch the division is two over Cleveland. Taylor Rogers pitched a perfect ninth for his 29th save.

Detroit (46-110) reached 110 losses for the second time, 16 years after setting the AL record of 119. With one more loss or a win by Baltimore, the club would be assured the No. 1 pick in next year's amateur draft.

Spencer Turnbull (3-16) allowed two runs - both scoring after he left the game - on six hits and two walks in six-plus innings.

    RAYS 2, YANKEES 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Ji-Man Choi hit a game-ending home run in the 12th inning that helped Tampa Bay remain on track for an AL wild card berth after New York's CC Sabathia pitched a perfect inning in his first regular season relief appearance.

Choi homered off Cory Gearrin (1-3) after Pete Fairbanks (2-3) struck out Brett Gardner with a runner on second and two outs in the top half.

Tampa Bay remained a half-game ahead of Cleveland for the second AL wild card.

Sabathia, a 39-year-old left-hander who is retiring at the end of the season, had made 560 regular season starts but is being moved to the bullpen along with J.A. Happ ahead of the postseason.

    INDIANS 11, WHITE SOX 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Jose Ramirez hit a grand slam and a three-run homer in his first two plate appearances after missing a month with a broken hand, and Cleveland pounded Chicago.

Roberto Perez and Oscar Mercado also went deep for the Indians, who won for the sixth time in seven games to remain a half-game back of Tampa Bay for the second AL wild card.

Mike Clevinger (13-3) pitched seven innings of five-hit ball and struck out 10 while extending his scoreless streak to 18 innings.

The switch-hitting Ramirez homered from both sides for the fourth time. He finished with a career-best seven RBIs. Batting left-handed, Ramirez drove a 3-1 pitch from Carson Fulmer (1-2) into the right-field stands with two outs in the first inning for his second career grand slam.

    ASTROS 3, MARINERS 0

SEATTLE (AP) - Gerrit Cole won his 15th consecutive decision, striking out 14 and walking none while pitching two-hit ball over seven innings to lead Houston.

Cole (19-5) is unbeaten in 21 starts since losing to the Chicago White Sox on May 22. He is on the longest streak of consecutive winning decisions since Toronto's Roy Halladay was 15-0 during an 18-start span in 2003. Cole set an Astros season record with 316 strikeouts, three more than J.R. Richard's total in 1979, and established a team record with his eighth straight game of double-digit strikeouts.

Ryan Pressley and Roberto Osuna finished a four-hitter, the Astros' 12th shutout this season. Osuna worked around a leadoff single for his 37th save in 43 chances.

Alex Bregman hit his 40th homer, a fourth-inning drive off Tommy Milone (4-10). Aledmys Diaz had an RBI double in the seventh and scored when Josh Reddick grounded into a forceout.

    DODGERS 6, PADRES 3

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Max Muncy hit his first career grand slam and Los Angeles clinched home-field advantage throughout the NL playoffs even before it beat staggering San Diego. The seven-time NL West champion Dodgers (101-56) locked up home field when the two-time NL East champion Atlanta Braves (96-62) lost 9-6 at Kansas City.

Muncy's 34th home run was a moon shot to right field on the first pitch by Gerardo Reyes with two outs in the fourth. Reyes came on after rookie Ronald Bolanos (0-2) walked Will Smith, allowed a single to reliever Tony Gonsolin and walked Joc Pederson.

Gonsolin (4-2) pitched two perfect innings in relief of Rich Hill, with three strikeouts. Kenley Jansen worked the ninth for his 31st save.

    ANGELS 3, ATHLETICS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Homer Bailey lost for the first time in eight starts and Oakland suffered a setback in its postseason pursuit. The A's let their lead for the top AL wild card drop to a half-game over Tampa Bay and one game over Cleveland. Their magic number to clinch a playoff spot remained at five with five games left.

David Fletcher had three hits and Albert Pujols drove in his 2,075th run to help the Angels end a seven-game skid. Dillon Peters (4-3) allowed two runs in five innings.

Khris Davis hit his 23rd homer of the season, but the A's lost consecutive games for the first time since Aug. 31-Sept. 1. Bailey (13-9) allowed three runs and eight hits in five innings.

    ROCKIES 8, GIANTS 5, 16 INNINGS

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Colorado and San Francisco combined to use a major league-record 25 pitchers, and Charlie Blackmon hit a three-run homer in the 16th inning to end it. The game lasted 5 hours, 31 minutes, with Giants manager Bruce Bochy making 12 pitching changes - hardly taking it easy in his final week on the job.

Blackmon's first hit of the night came in his eighth plate appearance and off Dereck Rodriguez (6-10) for his 31st home run. Both clubs left the bases loaded in the 11th, and Colorado stranded 15 baserunners.

Sam Howard (2-0) pitched the final two innings for the win.

    RED SOX 12, RANGERS 10

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Eduardo Rodriguez labored through five innings to get his 19th win, allowing more runs than he had in his previous seven starts combined, and Boston beat Texas. Rodriguez (19-6) exited with a 12-7 lead after throwing 113 pitches.

Boston (82-75) clinched a winning record while the Rangers (75-82), who opened their final homestand before moving into a new stadium next year, will have their third straight losing season. Brandon Workman, the fourth Boston reliever, worked the ninth for his 16th save in 22 chances.

Ariel Jurado (7-11) allowed four runs in three relief innings.

    ROYALS 9, BRAVES 6

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - In Kansas City's first game after manager Ned Yost announced he will retire after the season, the lowly Royals burst to a six-run lead in the first three innings and beat NL East champion Atlanta behind three hits and two RBIs from Nicky Lopez.

Danny Duffy (7-6) allowed three runs and five hits in five innings, improving to 2-1 in his last six starts.

Julio Teheran (10-11) gave up six runs and six hits in 2 1/3 innings. He has lost three straight starts, giving up 14 earned runs in 11 1/3 innings.

    ORIOLES 11, BLUE JAYS 4

TORONTO (AP) - Trey Mancini had a career-high five hits, DJ Stewart hit a two-run homer and Baltimore beat Toronto. Dwight Smith Jr. and Austin Wynns each hit solo home runs for the Orioles.

With one more victory or a loss by Detroit, the Orioles (51-106) can avoid having baseball's worst record for the second straight season. Right-hander Dylan Bundy (7-14) allowed two runs and three hits in seven innings to win for the first time since Aug. 25.

Scheduled to make his fourth big league appearance, Blue Jays rookie left-hander Anthony Kay was scratched because of back soreness about two hours before the game and replaced by lefty Thomas Pannone (3-6). He allowed three runs in the first inning.

        Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings……

        13) If Tony Romo makes the cut at the Safeway Open PGA event this week, then Boomer Esiason will move from the NFL Today studio to the broadcast booth to call the Bears-Vikings game Sunday afternoon with Jim Nantz.

        12) Steelers’ QB Mason Rudolph completed 14 of 27 passes Sunday in San Francisco, wth TD passes of 76-39 yards; those two TD passes were the only Rudolph completions that traveled more than one yard downfield in the air.

Will be interesting to see how opponents react to playing these new QB’s once they have more film to study on them.

        11) Cam Newton is dealing with a Lisfranc (foot) injury and is out indefinitely; Kyle Allen is now Carolina’s starting QB for the foreseeable future.

        10) Golden Nugget posted a pic last week of someone winning $20,000 at video poker; he had four deuces and an ace- the problem is, the person was playing $125 a hand— I can’t even imagine playing that much money on video poker.

$1.25 a hand is my limit on video poker; then again, I’m a nickel/dimer, but still……video poker goes pretty fast. $125 a hand can get expensive pretty quickly.

        9) Cleveland Browns opened at +5 vs Baltimore Sunday but were quickly bet up to +7; four of their next five games are on the road. Lot of pressure on a rookie head coach to live up to expectations that may not have been realistic.

        8) Orioles drew 1.31M fans in 80 home games this year, the lowest in Camden Yards history, and lowest for Baltimore in a non-strike season since 1978 at old Memorial Stadium.

        7) Good news: San Francisco Giants finished 42-39 on the road this year, after going 57-105 on foreign soil the last two years combined.

Bad news: This will be the first season since 1940 where the Giants posted a winning road record but had a losing overall record.

        6) In Buster Olney’s baseball column on ESPN.com this week, he describes the Mets as “……..the team generally regarded by rival executives as baseball’s model for dysfunction.” Not good.

        5) Calvin Johnson was a great WR for the Detroit Lions; when he was in high school, he finished 2nd in the voting for 2003 Georgia 4A High School Offensive Player of the Year.

Who won the award that year? Rams’ head coach Sean McVay.

        4) Modern baseball announcers on local TV:
        — Home team hits a homer: Player A has great power!!! Look how far he hit that ball the other way. He worked out all winter to get stronger.

        — Visiting team hits a homer: Did you know homers went up 57% in AAA this year? Why is baseball using a juiced ball this season? Player B lunged at the ball and still hit it out!!!

        3) So far this month, college football teams who were voted into the AP top 25 for the first time this season are 1-6 vs spread in their next game. Kansas State fits into that category this week.

        2) RIP Texas/Ole Miss quarterback Jevan Snead, who died Saturday at age 32; he was found dead overnight on Saturday in Austin. Police are investigating the death but do not suspect foul play.

Snead competed with Colt McCoy for the Longhorns’ starting job in 2006 after Vince Young’s departure; he played in eight games in 2006, completing 26-of-49 passes for 371 yards, but then transferred to Ole Miss, where he started for two years (2008-09).

Snead skipped his senior season at Ole Miss to enter the 2010 NFL draft; he went undrafted and was later cut after signing with Tampa Bay.

        1) Are podcasts replacing reading as a way of getting information? If so, that is kind of sad, because writing is such a cool thing to do. Seems like podcasts are a much lazier way of getting information out. You really have to spend your time wisely, and pick podcasts that are well thought out and informative, not just people running their mouths and getting paid for it.

        • LEADING OFF: Brewers, Twins on brink of some bubbly
          September 25, 2019
          By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

          BREWING SOME BUBBLY

The Brewers are on the verge of another postseason berth. Milwaukee can lock up an NL wild card with a win over Cincinnati or losses by the Cubs and Mets. Just like last season, when the Brewers put on a late rush to take the NL Central title, they have closed in on a playoff spot with a September flourish. They've won 16 of 18, positioning themselves for a wild-card showdown with Washington, and they trail St. Louis by 2 1/2 games in the NL Central. Jordan Lyles starts for Milwaukee against the Reds. He's 6-1 with a 2.35 in 10 starts since being acquired from Pittsburgh.

          CENTRAL POWER

The Twins can clinch their first AL Central title since 2010 with a win over Detroit and a loss by Cleveland against the Chicago White Sox. Minnesota is 97-60, its most victories since going 98-64 in 1970. With three wins in their final five games, the Twins can become the record fourth team in the majors this year with 100 victories. Two years after going undrafted, rookie right-hander Randy Dobnak (1-1, 2.01) is set for his fifth big league start for Minnesota. He's trying to assure himself a spot on the postseason roster.

          GETTING WILD

The only real race left is for the two AL wild cards, with Tampa Bay and Cleveland trailing Oakland in a tight battle for the top spot. The Rays hold a half-game edge over the Indians for the final position and will start right-hander Charlie Morton (15-6, 3.15) against the Yankees a day after beating the AL East champions on a walk-off homer by Ji-Man Choi. Tampa Bay has trailed in 14 of its last 15 games, yet is 10-5 in that stretch. Cleveland is sending right-hander Shane Bieber (15-7, 3.23) out against the White Sox. Oakland will start righty Frankie Montas (9-2, 2.70) against the Angels following the end of his 80-game suspension for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.

          CLOSING ARGUMENT

Bidding for a second straight NL Cy Young Award, Mets ace Jacob deGrom (10-8, 2.51 ERA) makes his final scheduled start this season against last-place Miami. The right-hander entered Tuesday leading the league in strikeouts with 248 and WHIP at 0.99. He ranked second in ERA and fourth in innings (197). And he's been finishing strong in September, with consecutive outings of seven scoreless innings the last two times out. He has pitched seven innings in seven straight starts and 11 of his past 12.

New York would be eliminated from the postseason with a loss or a win by Milwaukee.

          BOSTON GOODBYE?

Rick Porcello (13-12, 5.56 ERA) makes his 159th and possibly last regular season start for the Red Sox at Texas. The 30-year-old right-hander is eligible for free agency this offseason after five seasons with Boston, including 2016 when he was the AL Cy Young Award winner with a 22-4 record. He is 148-118 overall in 11 major league seasons, going 76-63 in six years with Detroit before getting traded to Boston. Even after throwing six scoreless innings in a no-decision at Tampa Bay last Friday, Porcello is 1-2 with a 6.63 ERA in four September starts.

                      • Brewers beat Reds 9-2 to clinch playoff spot
                        September 25, 2019
                        By The Associated Press

CINCINNATI (AP) The Milwaukee Brewers wrapped up their second straight postseason appearance Wednesday night, with Ryan Braun's grand slam sparking a 9-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds that also tightened the NL Central race.

The Brewers have won six in a row and 17 of 19 despite losing MVP Christian Yelich to a broken kneecap, vaulting from also-ran to at least a wild card. There's more at their fingertips - the division-leading Cardinals lost again, slicing their lead over the Brewers to 1 1/2 games.

Milwaukee trails Washington by one game for the wild card lead.

The Brewers jogged onto the field and formed a scrum by second base after when Junior Guerra got Christian Colon on a grounder for the final out.

Braun had a solo shot in a 4-2 win in the series opener, and got the celebration started early Wednesday with his eighth career grand slam in the first inning. Teammates were on their feet, leaning against the dugout railing in anticipation of a big night, when he connected off Tyler Mahle (2-12). When Eric Thames followed with another homer, Brewers players jubilantly smacked the green padding atop the dugout railing. Keston Hiura also connected off Mahle.

Starter Jordan Lyles (12-8) contributed an infield single and scored a run during the Brewers' surge to an 8-1 lead after three innings.

Lyles gave up Eugenio Suarez's 49th homer, which moved him ahead of Mike Schmidt and Adrian Beltre for the modern NL record by a third baseman. George Foster holds the club record of 52 in 1977.

                        TWINS 5, TIGERS 1

DETROIT (AP) -Luis Arraez and Eddie Rosario homered, Randy Dobnak allowed one hit in six innings and Minnesota beat Detroit, then won the AL Central title when Cleveland lost to the White Sox in Chicago.

Minnesota earned its first division title since 2010 and only its second postseason appearance since then. The Twins (98-60) have their highest victory total since the 1970 team also won 98 games.

Dobnak (2-1) allowed no scoring after an unearned run in the first. Arraez hit a two-run homer in the seventh off Drew VerHagen (4-3). Nelson Cruz added an RBI single in the eighth, and Rosario's two-run shot that inning made it 5-1.

The Tigers (46-111) are assured of baseball's worst record and the No. 1 pick in next year's draft.

                        ASTROS 3, MARINERS 0

SEATTLE (AP) - Zack Greinke came within two outs of pitching the third no-hitter by Houston this year, losing his bid on a single by Seattle rookie Austin Nola in the ninth inning.

Greinke (18-5) was in complete control while trying for his first career no-hitter. He drew cheers from the orange-shirted Astros fans when he took the mound to begin the ninth and retired Tom Murphy on a grounder.

Nola, in an 0-for-16 slump, was up next and dumped a liner into shallow left-center field. Center fielder Jake Marisnick made a diving attempt but came up well short and pounded his fist on his leg.

Greinke gave up another single to Tim Lopes and was replaced after throwing 108 pitches. Will Harris got his third save.

Houston posted its franchise-high 104th win and moved one step closer to home-field advantage throughout the postseason.

Greinke struck out nine and walked one.

Houston got all the runs it needed in the first inning. George Springer singled to lead off the game against Yusei Kikichi. Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez followed with RBI doubles for a quick 2-0 lead. Kikuchi (6-11) settled down and held Houston scoreless over the next five innings, striking out four with no walks.

Kyle Tucker made it 3-0 with a solo home run in the top of the ninth.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Wilmer Difo drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single in the seventh inning and Anibal Sanchez pitched seven solid innings to help Washington beat Philadelphia.

The Nationals maintained a one-game lead over Milwaukee in the race for the top NL wild card.

Washington faced a 2-1 deficit when Asdrubal Cabrera singled and Yan Gomes doubled with one out in the seventh. Victor Robles followed with a sacrifice fly that tied it. Difo, who was making his first start since May 16, followed with a single to right-center off reliever Mike Morin (1-3) that scored Gomes.

Howie Kendrick and Brian Dozier homered for the Nationals. Sanchez (11-8) allowed two runs and six hits, striking out seven without a walk. Sean Doolittle earned his first save since a stint on the injured list. He pitched a scoreless ninth for his 29th save in 35 attempts and first since Aug. 16.

Brad Miller homered for the Phillies.

                        DIAMONDBACKS 9, CARDINALS 7

PHOENIX (AP) - Pinch-hitter Paul Goldschmidt grounded into a game-ending double play with two runners on the base and NL Central-leading St. Louis fell short in a ninth-inning rally against Arizona.

St. Louis and Arizona were back on the field about 11 hours after the Diamondbacks' 3-2 victory in 19 innings, a game that took nearly seven hours. Cardinals starter Michael Wacha was pulled in the second inning with tightness in his right shoulder.

Errors by rookie third baseman Tommy Edman and catcher Matt Wieters helped Arizona score seven times in the sixth for a 9-5 lead. Wilmer Flores homered during the burst.

The Cardinals loaded the bases with one out in the ninth and Matt Wieters hit a two-run single. Goldschmidt, who homered in the first two games of the series in his return to the desert, hit a grounder off former and teammate Archie Bradley and Arizona turned two to end it.

Merrill Kelly (13-14) exited trailing 5-2 after six innings and wound up with the win. Bradley got his 17th save. Reliever Junior Fernandez (0-1) took the loss. Cardinals rookie outfielder Randy Arozarena hit his first major league home run, stole home and threw out a runner at third base.

                        PIRATES 4, CUBS 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The collapsing Chicago Cubs were eliminated from playoff contention shortly before losing their eighth straight game, falling to Pittsburgh.

Back-to-back wild pitches by David Phelps in the eighth inning enabled Pittsburgh to score the winning run. Just before Phelps' bout with wildness, Milwaukee clinched the second NL wild card with a victory at Cincinnati. The Cubs will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2014.

Chicago's skid included four one-run defeats at the hands of NL Central-leading St. Louis last weekend.

Phelps entered in relief with the score tied 2-2 and walked Pablo Reyes to put runners on first and second with one out. Jose Osuna drew a walk from Brad Wieck (1-2) before scoring on the wild pitches, and Erik Gonzalez added a sacrifice fly.

Michael Feliz (4-4) pitched the eighth, and Keone Kela worked the ninth for his first save.

                        WHITE SOX 8, INDIANS 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Shane Bieber got tagged early and Cleveland lost ground in the AL wild-card race, falling to Chicagot. The Indians' loss clinched the AL Central title for Minnesota.

Cleveland lost for the second time in its last nine tries and dropped 1 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay for the second AL wild-card spot.

A throwing error by first baseman Carlos Santana put the Indians behind at the start. Bieber (15-8) had won three in a row, but allowed five runs - three earned - on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Jose Ramirez hit a solo home run for Cleveland. On Tuesday night, in his first two plate appearances after missing a month with a broken hand, he hit a grand slam and a three-run homer.

Tim Anderson matched a career high with four hits and scored two runs for Chicago. Ross Detwiler (3-5) was the winner.

                        METS 10, MARLINS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Pete Alonso hit his major league-high 51st home run, one short of the rookie record, and Jacob deGrom made his last overpowering pitch for a repeat Cy Young Award as New York routed Miami in an easy win that wasn't enough to keep the Mets in the playoff hunt.

New York was eliminated from the NL wild-card race when Milwaukee secured the league's final postseason berth by completing a 9-2 victory in Cincinnati as the Mets batted in the eighth.

Alonso hit a three-run shot off rookie Robert Dugger (0-4) to make it 7-0 in the second. In his final scheduled start of the season, deGrom (11-8) got some rare extensive run support and allowed only two hits in seven shutout innings. He walked one and struck out seven to increase his NL-leading total to 255.

                        RAYS 4, YANKEES 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Charlie Morton and the Tampa Bay bullpen combined on a one-hitter and the Rays held their lead in the AL wild-card race, beating New York.

Tampa Bay began the night in the second wild-card spot, a half-game ahead of Cleveland and a half-game behind Oakland. The Rays swept a two-game series from the 102-win Yankees, holding them to DJ LeMahieu's soft, clean single to right field with two outs in the sixth inning off Morton (16-6).

Morton struck out nine and walked three in six innings. Four relievers finished it out for the Rays.

Joey Wendle homered on the third pitch from opener Jonathan Loaisiga (2-2).

                        BRAVES 10, ROYALS 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Josh Donaldson had a career-high three doubles while driving in four runs, Dansby Swanson had a career-high four hits while driving in two, and NL East champion Atlanta cruised past Kansas City.

With their playoff seed secure and nothing on the line, the Braves sent reliever Josh Tomlin to the mound for his first start of the season. Luke Jackson (9-2) was among six relievers to go the rest of the way, helping the Braves snap a four-game skid to the Royals.

Jacob Barnes (1-4) took the loss.

                        RED SOX 10, RANGERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Christian Vazquez, Mitch Moreland and Rafael Devers homered, and Rick Porcello won what could be his final start for Boston.

Porcello (14-12), who will be a free agent, allowed all three runs on six hits, no walks and two hit batters in six innings. He matched a season high with eight strikeouts and retired his last 11 batters.

Vazquez broke a third-inning tie with a two-run homer. It was Boston's 239rd homer this season, breaking the franchise record set in 2003. Moreland also hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning. Devers hit a solo shot in the seventh. Kolby Allard (4-2) was the loser.

                        BLUE JAYS 3, ORIOLES 2

TORONTO (AP) - Rowdy Tellez hit two solo home runs, Jacob Waguespack pitched six shutout innings and Toronto beat Baltimore.

Tellez hit a leadoff drive against right-hander Gabriel Ynoa (1-10) in the fourth, then followed up with an opposite-field shot off left-hander Paul Fry to begin the sixth.

Billy McKinney got Toronto started with the first leadoff home run of his career, lining Ynoa's second pitch of the game over the wall in right. Waguespack (5-5) allowed four hits, all singles.

Ken Giles struck out the side in the ninth for his 22nd save.

                        GIANTS 2, ROCKIES 1

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Jaylin Davis hit his first career home run to end it with one out in the ninth, sending San Francisco past Colorado.

Will Smith (6-0) struck out the side in the ninth for the win before Davis connected on a 3-2 pitch from DJ Johnson (0-2).

Kevin Pillar hit an RBI single in the third for San Francisco. The Rockies tied it with an unearned run in the seventh after Raimel Tapia reached on shortstop Brandon Crawford's throwing error and Josh Fuentes scored on first baseman Brandon Belt's missed catch.

Stephen Vogt stole two bases, doubling his career total, while Mike Yastrzemski extended his on-base streak to 16 games with a walk in the third.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

                            13) Cardinals-Diamondbacks played until 4:30am Wednesday morning; fascinating game, and then the teams played a day game that started 11 hours later.

If MLB wants to have tie games to avoid having marathon games that last into the middle of the night, I’d be OK with that, but no way in hell would I want them to institute a gimmick like starting extra innings with a runner on 2nd base. Not good.

Myself, I love long ballgames, but I can see how they can screw up a pitching staff for a few days. Over in Japan they have tie games; wonder what they think about ties there?

                            12) Baseball is going to look a lot different next September; rosters will be capped at 28 guys, if I remember right (instead of 40), so none of the constant pitching changes next year, Plus, once they put in the rule about relievers having to face three batters, the constant R-L-R pitching changes will also be greatly reduced, which will shorten games.

They used 25 pitchers in the Rockies-Giants game Tuesday; that was the first and could be the last time that ever happens.

                            11) Alex Bregman’s team beat Mike Trout’s team in a fantasy football league last week; sounds like a fun league to be a part of. Wonder what the entry fee is.

                            10) Someone at SouthPoint Casino in Las Vegas wagered $200,000 on the Houston Astros to win the World Series at 5-2 odds.

                            9) We could’ve gotten good odds back in March that Washington would wind up with a better record than the Phillies this year. Dave Martinez looked like a lock to get fired back in mid-May but his team caught fire and will be playing in the postseason.

How ironic is it that the Phillies were eliminated and the Nationals clinched a playoff spot while the Phillies were in Washington this week?

                            8) Red Sox-Tampa played an important game (for the Rays) Monday night, and only 8,779 fans showed up at the Trop. When the Rays call Montreal home in a couple years, don’t want to hear anyone in Florida complaining about it.

                            7) Noah Syndergaard has allowed 41 stolen bases this year; no one else has allowed more than 24, which may help explain why Syndergaard doesn’t like Wilson Ramos catching his games, though the Marlins stole four bases with Tomas Nido catching Tuesday night.

                            6) The NFL is directly linking with a sports bookmaker, Australia’s Tabcorp, allowing the company to stream NFL RedZone and NFL Network on its platforms and to use league and team logos, which fuels speculation that the league will do the same thing here, at some point.

                            5) University of New Haven hired former Kansas athletic director Sheahon Zenger, and will look into making the jump from D-II to Division I, which is an expensive but potentially lucrative jump. Not sure how much room is left in the conferences that are lucrative, though.

                            4) CC Sabathia’s 560 regular season starts before his first relief appearance are the 2nd-most to begin a career without a relief appearance, behind only Tom Glavine, who started 682 games without ever coming out of the bullpen.

                            3) Does the seemingly annual increase in strikeouts make defensive ability less important in baseball? Fewer balls in play, less need for guys who can catch the ball well. I’m just asking, not sure what the right answer would be.

                            2) Houston Cougars opened the week Sunday at -3 over North Texas, but when news of QB Houston QB D’Eriq King and WR Keith Corbin taking the rest of the year off hit the wires, the line swung dramatically and now the Mean Green is -7. Not a lot of faith in Houston’s backup QB there, and there are also rumors that there is unrest in the Houston program, which wouldn’t be good.

                            1) From Ralph Michaels:

Since 1998, Thursday night non-divisional home favorites are 41-17-4 ATS (70.7%)
