  • Morales homers in 7th straight game as Jays fall to Phillies
    August 26, 2018

TORONTO (AP) Kendrys Morales became the seventh player in major league history to homer in at least seven consecutive games, going deep in the third inning of the Toronto Blue Jays' 8-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday.

Morales hit a two-run shot off Vince Velasquez, his 21st homer of the season. He has a chance to equal the major league record of homers in eight consecutive games, shared by Ken Griffey Jr., Dale Long and Don Mattingly.

Rhys Hoskins and Carlos Santana hit back-to-back home runs for Philadelphia. Maikel Franco and Wilson Ramos each had two-run shots as the Phillies avoided a three-game sweep.

Ramos had four hits. He singled in the first, doubled home a run in the second, singled in the sixth and homered off Tyler Clippard in the eighth, his 15th.

Velasquez (9-9) allowed two runs and three hits in five innings for the victory as Philadelphia won for the second time in eight games.

Marco Estrada (7-10) allowed five runs and seven hits in two-plus innings as Toronto's winning streak ended at five.

    RAYS 9, RED SOX 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Blake Snell pitched two-hit ball over six innings and Tampa Bay won its eighth straight game, handing the major league-leading Red Sox their first sweep of the season.

Snell (16-5) allowed one run and struck out eight. He has given up no more than one earned run in 14 consecutive starts at home, and he has a 1.08 ERA in four outings against the Red Sox this year.

Boston (90-42) has lost six of eight and was outscored 24-5 in the three-game set.

Matt Duffy had three hits and drove in two runs for the Rays, who completed their first undefeated homestand of more than one series. They won all seven games against Kansas City and Boston.

Red Sox starter Nathan Eovaldi (5-6), acquired from the Rays in a July 25 trade, dropped to 2-2 with Boston. He gave up six runs - five earned - and eight hits in four innings.

    NATIONALS 15, METS 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Trea Turner set off a lively dugout celebration after scoring a run that ended Washington's 32-inning scoreless drought and then the Nationals really went wild at the plate, hammering New York.

The Nationals had been shut out in three straight games - for the first time since the team moved from Montreal to Washington in 2005 - before Juan Soto's RBI groundout in the sixth.

Ahead 1-0, the Nats erupted for eight more runs in the eighth. Their biggest inning of the season featured homers by Adam Eaton and Wilmer Difo, and a three-run double by pinch-hitter Bryce Harper.

Mark Reynolds launched his sixth career grand slam to highlight a six-run ninth.

The lopsided win came with a cost, though, as reliever Kelvin Herrera was carted off the field with one out to go. He handled Jose Bautista's grounder, but hurt the top of his left foot running to first base and hopped to the bag. Herrera was on crutches and wearing a boot after the game. The Nationals said they didn't yet have an update on his injury.

Jefry Rodriguez (2-1) blanked the Mets on two singles for six innings.

Steven Matz (5-11) gave up one run and five hits over seven innings in his fifth start of the year against Washington.

    YANKEES 5, ORIOLES 3

BALTIMORE (AP) - Luke Voit went 3 for 3 with a two-run homer to help Luis Severino earn his major league-leading 17th victory, and New York completed a four-game sweep.

Rookie Miguel Andujar also had three hits and two RBIs for New York. The Yankees have won eight of nine to move within six games of first-place Boston in the AL East, the closest they've been since Aug. 1.

Severino (17-6) allowed four hits and two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings, striking out eight. David Robertson worked the ninth for his fourth save.

Dylan Bundy (7-13) pitched five innings, giving up four runs and six hits - including his major league-leading 34th home run.

    INDIANS 12, ROYALS 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Jason Kipnis hit an inside-the-park homer and finished with four RBIs, Edwin Encarnacion added a two-run shot and Cleveland beat Kansas City to snap a four-game skid.

Kipnis rounded the bases for his two-run homer in the ninth inning, when his high flyball to right field bounced off the top of the wall and into no-man's land. It was his second career inside-the-park job and the second for the Indians this year.

Shane Bieber (8-2) allowed four runs for Cleveland on homers by Whit Merrifield, Salvador Perez and Lucas Duda. He departed after allowing six hits and striking out seven in 5 1/3 innings.

The AL Central-leading Indians improved to 10-1 this season when facing a series sweep.

Right-hander Jorge Lopez (0-4) allowed five runs, all in the fourth inning, on five hits and three walks for Kansas City.

    CUBS 9, REDS 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Kyle Hendricks allowed two hits in seven innings, David Bote and Kyle Schwarber homered and Chicago beat Cincinnati to complete a four-game sweep.

Jason Heyward went 4 for 4 with a triple and drove in two runs for the NL Central-leading Cubs. Bote added two hits and three RBIs.

Hendricks (10-10) struck out five and walked one. He has given up two runs in his last 14 innings.

Tucker Barnhart had two hits for the last-place Reds, who have dropped five straight and been shut out nine times.

The Cubs have homered in a season-high 11 straight games and won five straight.

Hendricks was lifted for a pinch-hitter after throwing 98 pitches. Randy Rosario worked the final two innings to complete the three-hitter.

Homer Bailey (1-12) allowed six runs - three earned - and eight hits in five innings to remain winless since May 12. The Reds have lost 17 of his 18 starts.

    CARDINALS 12, ROCKIES 3

DENVER (AP) - Matt Carpenter tied a St. Louis record with four doubles, pitcher Austin Gomber had a two-run infield single in a six-run first inning, and the Cardinals routed Colorado.

Carpenter matched a franchise mark that Joe ''Ducky'' Medwick set on Aug. 4, 1937, against the Boston Bees (now Braves). Carpenter doubled twice in the first, had another in the third and lined his fourth in the seventh on a day when St. Louis pounded out 16 hits. The first baseman wound up 4 for 5 with two RBIs.

Gomber threw six efficient innings and the Cardinals took two of three from the Rockies in a series between NL playoff contenders.

Anderson (6-7) was booed as he walked off the mound after allowing six runs and getting just two outs. He was replaced by Chad Bettis.

Wearing ''Big G'' on the back of his uniform as part of Players' Weekend, Gomber (4-0) allowed two runs, one earned, and five hits to become the first left-handed Cardinals starter to win at Coors Field since Kent Mercker on July 24, 1999.

    ATHLETICS 6, TWINS 2

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Matt Chapman homered twice, Jed Lowrie drove in three runs with a homer and double, and Oakland's bullpen preserved an effective outing by call-up Chris Bassitt in a 6-2 victory over Minnesota.

Oakland maintained at least a four-game advantage for the second wild card spot over Seattle. The A's open a three-game series Monday at AL West-leading Houston.

Chapman homered in the first and then opened the seventh with his 20th homer. Lowrie followed with his 21st homer to put Oakland up 6-2.

Bassitt, called up Sunday from Triple-A Nashville for the sixth time this season, allowed one run on four hits in 4 2/3 innings .Ryan Buchter (3-0) pitched a scoreless seventh for the victory.

Jose Berrios (11-9) allowed three runs on eight hits in five innings.

    BRAVES 4, MARLINS 0

MIAMI (AP) - Kevin Gausman and four relievers combined on a two-hitter, and Atlanta beat Miami despite an ongoing offensive slump.

The Braves earned a split even though they scored just seven earned runs in the four-game series. The NL East leaders finished 14-5 against last-place Miami this year.

Gausman (4-1) pitched five innings before departing for a pinch hitter. The right-hander won his fourth start in a row and has an ERA of 1.69 in five outings since Braves acquired him from the Baltimore Orioles on July 31.

Braves starters compiled an ERA of 0.63 for the week.

The Marlins' first hit was a third-inning single by pitcher Pablo Lopez, and Derek Dietrich singled with two out in the ninth. Miami managed four runs and 16 hits in the series.

Atlanta wasn't much more productive, totaling one run in a 27-inning stretch before scoring in the sixth against Lopez (2-4).

    ASTROS 3, ANGELS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Framber Valdez gave up one run over five innings in his first career start, and Houston beat Los Angeles for its fifth straight win.

The Astros improved to 47-21 on the road, including an 18-5 mark in California.

Valdez (2-0) struck out three while allowing two hits and three walks in his first career start, making his case for the spot in Houston's rotation left vacant because of Lance McCullers Jr.'s forearm injury.

Carlos Correa had two RBIs on a line-drive single to center field with the bases loaded in the third inning that put the Astros in front 2-0. Marwin Gonzalez made it 3-0 with a base hit through the gap at first to score Alex Bregman.

Roberto Osuna earned his second save with the Astros and 11th of the season, striking out pinch hitter Shohei Ohtani to end the game after hitting Francisco Arcia with a two-out pitch.

Felix Pena (1-4) gave up three runs on three hits and two walks in six innings.

    DIAMONDBACKS 5, MARINERS 2

PHOENIX (AP) - Paul Goldschmidt hit his 30th homer, Zack Greinke won for the first time in almost a month and Arizona avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of Seattle.

With the victory and Colorado's 12-3 loss to St. Louis, the Diamondbacks were back alone in first place in the NL West.

Goldschmidt's three-run shot off Mike Leake (8-8) punctuated a five-run third inning for the Diamondbacks, who bounced back from blowing a two-run lead in the ninth Saturday night and losing in 10 innings.

Brad Boxberger, who blew the save Saturday night, walked pinch-hitter Nelson Cruz to load the bases in the ninth. But Mitch Haniger lined out sharply to third and Robinson Cano bounced into a double play to give Boxberger his 29th save in 35 tries.

Greinke (13-8) gave up an unearned run and five hits in 6 2/3 innings, striking out six and walking two.

    DODGERS 7, PADRES 3

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Justin Turner drove in five runs while Manny Machado put Los Angeles ahead with a two-run homer, and the Dodgers swept a three-game series against San Diego.

Hyun-Jin Ryu (4-1) gave up 11 hits in his 5 2/3 innings, but held the Padres to two runs.

The Padres gave left-hander Robbie Erlin (3-4) the early lead with a solo home run from Franmil Reyes in the second and Hunter Renfroe's RBI single in the third.

Turner tied it up with a two-run double in the fifth. Machado added his 31st home run of the season, and his seventh in 35 games with the Dodgers. Machado had a three-run homer Saturday.

The victory kept the third-place Dodgers 2+ games back of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NL West.

    BREWERS 7, PIRATES 4

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Mike Moustakas and Manny Pina each hit a two-run homer in the third inning, Jonathan Schoop went deep in the seventh and Milwaukee beat Pittsburgh.

The Brewers rocked Chris Archer (4-7) for six runs and six hits in the third. Schoop homered in the seventh off Nick Kingham.

Chase Anderson (9-7) cruised through the first four innings for Milwaukee but fell apart in the sixth. Adam Frazier hit a two-run homer and Polanco followed with a drive that pulled the Pirates to 6-4.

Jeremy Jeffress worked the ninth for his seventh save.

    WHITE SOX 7, TIGERS 2

DETROIT (AP) - Michael Kopech pitched six impressive innings for his first major league win and Chicago scored four runs in the third against Detroit.

Kopech (1-0) allowed a run and seven hits in his second career start. The highly touted right-hander was limited to two scoreless innings when it rained in his debut Tuesday against Minnesota. He threw 86 pitches this time, finishing with four strikeouts and no walks.

Daniel Palka homered for Chicago, and Ronny Rodriguez went deep for Detroit.

Jace Fry entered with the bases loaded and retired the final two batters for his third save. The White Sox have won nine of 12.

Jordan Zimmermann (6-6) permitted five runs and eight hits in six innings for the Tigers, who retired Alan Trammell's No. 3 in a pregame ceremony.

    GIANTS 3, RANGERS 1

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Derek Holland pitched three-hit ball into the seventh inning to beat his former team as San Francisco topped Texas.

Steven Duggar hit a two-run triple for the Giants off Yovani Gallardo (7-3). Holland, who won 62 games over eight seasons with the Rangers after they drafted him in 2006, notched consecutive victories for the first time this season.

The Giants' lefty yielded one run and three walks with four strikeouts, then left to a standing ovation from the crowd.

Four days earlier, Holland (7-8) gained national attention after making a racially insensitive joke while appearing on MLB Network alongside Giants massage therapist Haro Ogawa in a bit that was meant to be fun. Holland later apologized for his comment.

Evan Longoria tripled and scored on a passed ball for San Francisco. The Giants won a home series for the first time since taking two of three from the Chicago Cubs in early July.

Elvis Andrus had an RBI double on his 30th birthday for Texas.

Mark Melancon earned his third save.

        Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

        13) There are two NFL handicapping contests at the Westgate in Las Vegas; in one you put up $1,500, pick five NFL games a week, and lot of people get prizes (30? 50?). First prize last year was right around $1M- they wound up with 2,748 entries, so $4,122,000 was in the pot.

This year, 1,768 people have signed up so far, with 13 days to go for more people to enter.

The second contest is winner-take-all, with a $5,000 entry fee. Last year, 94 people entered, so first prize was $470,000. This year, 64 people have entered, as of Saturday.

        12) Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas also a contest, one where you pick seven games a week, but they can be college games, too. Entry fee is $1,000, and top 20 finishers get paid.

        11) If you like to bet on sports, you should listen to SportsXradio, which is on 10-12 pm every weeknight here in the east. It is on radio station 720am in Las Vegas, or you can listen on sportsxradio.com. Shows are archived if you can’t listen to them live.

Why do I say this? They have a guy named Joe Lisi on Friday nights who knows a ton about college football- he pegged 17-point underdog Hawai’i as a SU winner at Colorado State. Host Ken Thomson is as sharp about sports as anyone in the country.

        10) Nebraska will be starting a true freshman QB in Scott Frost’s first season coaching the Cornhuskers; Adrian Martinez was supposed to go to Tennessee, but when Butch Jones was told to take a hike, Martinez went elsewhere.

Martinez had an operation on his throwing shoulder and missed his senior year of high school ball; will be interesting to see him play next week.

        9) Bad news for my A’s; Sean Manaea (shoulder) goes on the DL. All five members of the A’s starting rotation from the start of the season are now either hurt, or coming back from injury.

Oakland is 45-16 since June 16, but the Manaea injury is a problem.

        8) Seattle Seahawks’ rookie punter Michael Dickson is getting rave reviews this summer; he has great hang time on his punts and stuck a couple of them inside the Minnesota 10-yard line in this weekend’s game. Dickson is an Australian who played college football at Texas.

        7) Pirates’ pitcher Chris Archer wore neon green baseball shoes when he pitched in Milwaukee Sunday; kind of like Baylor’s basketball uniforms- very bright. Wonder if it distracted hitters at all.

        6) They drew 3,000 fans in downtown Las Vegas for a Raiders watch party when the Silver and Black played in Green Bay last week; it’ll be fascinating to see how the Raiders’ move to the desert works out.

        5) Toronto 1B Kendrys Morales has homered in seven straight games; the record is eight, held by many, including Dale Long, who wound up doing weekend sports on Channel 10 here in Albany.

        4) Michigan Wolverines’ WR Tarik Black probably broke his foot Saturday at practice and is expected to miss an extended amount of time; he is an important part of their offense. Black also missed ten games last year with a foot injury.

        3) Albany Great Danes’ basketball team has six international students; they have players from four different countries. No players from New York City, only 148 miles down the road.

        2) Weird seeing Matt Holliday playing for Colorado again; when we started our fantasy baseball league (a keeper league) in 2005, the first three players I drafted were Holliday, Adam Dunn and Brandon Webb.

Holliday was totally awesome in ’07, knocked in 150 runs; in ’09, Colorado traded him to the A’s, who held on to him for half the season before dealing him to St Louis, in a horrific pair of trades that set the A’s back at least a couple years. Wish he had stayed in Colorado.

        1) Odd thing: Holliday’s dad was at one time the baseball coach at Oklahoma State, but he got fired. When Holliday was on the A’s, Brett Anderson was his teammate; Anderson’s father was the guy who replaced Tom Holliday at OSU. Had to be at least a little awkward.

        • LEADING OFF: Morales swings for HR record; AL West showdown
          August 26, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Monday:

          CHASING HISTORY

Kendrys Morales has homered in seven straight games for Toronto, one short of the major league record. He can match Dale Long, Don Mattingly and Ken Griffey Jr. when the Blue Jays face rookie David Hess (2-8, 5.50) and the Orioles in Baltimore. ''It'd be something if he gets (the record). I don't think any of us can comprehend how hard it is to do,'' Toronto manager John Gibbons said. Morales has already connected off Hess during the streak, and the Cuban slugger said the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, has requested one of his bats. ''It's amazing what I've been doing,'' he added. One of seven players in big league history with a streak this long, Morales has six home runs in 116 career at-bats at Camden Yards. He has 21 homers this season and is batting .500 (17 for 34) with eight home runs and 15 RBIs during a 10-game hitting streak.

          WILD WEST

Oakland plays at Houston in the opener of a three-game series between the top two teams in the AL West. Gerrit Cole (11-5, 2.73 ERA) pitches for the World Series champion Astros, who have won five straight and lead the division by 1+ games. Cole is 2-0 with a 2.92 ERA in four starts against the A's this season. Athletics lefty Brett Anderson (3-3, 3.47) is 3-1 with a 2.11 ERA in eight starts since coming off the disabled list, and opponents are batting just .218 since his return. Houston expects to have All-Star outfielder George Springer (quadriceps) back in the lineup.

          MURPHY'S LAW

Three years ago, Daniel Murphy powered the Mets into the World Series by going 9 for 17 (.529) with four home runs to win NLCS MVP honors in a four-game sweep of the Cubs. Now, he'll face his former team for the first time as a member of the Cubs when they host Noah Syndergaard (9-3, 3.68 ERA) and the Mets at Wrigley Field. Murphy has tormented New York since leaving town as a free agent, batting .390 with 11 homers, 43 RBIs and a whopping 1.162 OPS in 44 games against the Mets for the Washington Nationals, who traded him to Chicago last week. Jon Lester (14-5, 3.64) starts for the Cubs.

          EYE ON THE PRIZE

Suddenly back within striking distance of first-place Boston in the AL East, the banged-up Yankees send Masahiro Tanaka (9-4) to the mound at home against the White Sox. Carlos Rodon (5-3) starts for Chicago, which has won nine of 12.

          SECOND CHANCE

Stephen Strasburg (6-7, 4.23 ERA) pitches for the Nationals in Philadelphia against Zach Eflin (9-4, 3.93) and the Phillies. Strasburg came off the disabled list last week after missing more than a month with a neck problem and gave up five runs in four innings vs. Philadelphia. His velocity dipped in his last inning.

          GRAY'S DAYS

Rockies right-hander Jon Gray faces Mike Trout and the Angels with his club a game back of Arizona for the NL West lead. Gray hasn't lost a start since June 12, a span of 10 outings. He's allowed four earned runs or fewer in his past seven starts - no small feat, with four of those games at Coors Field - and Colorado has won each of his past nine outings. The Angels have dropped six straight, including a three-game sweep by Houston over the weekend.

                  Joe Williams

                  Streaky Teams (entering Monday)

                  Wins and Losses Streak
Chicago Cubs 5-0 past five games overall
Chicago White Sox 9-3 past 12 games overall
Houston 5-0 past five games overall
L.A. Angels 1-8 past nine games overall
Tampa Bay 8-0 past eight games overall

                  Over/Under Streak
Atlanta Under 9-0 past nine games
Miami Under 4-0 past four games
Philadelphia Over 5-2 past seven games
St. Louis Under 7-3-1 past 11 games
San Francisco Under 10-4-1 past 15 games

                  Brave New World

The Atlanta Braves have been a friend to total bettors, hitting the 'under' in nine consecutive games. That includes seven straight road games, although they'll have to wait a while to extend that streak since they'll be opening up a new homestand against the Tampa Bay Rays starting on Tuesday. The under is 5-2 in Atlanta's past seven at home, too, so there is a good chance the run continues at SunTrust Park. They'll roll with RHP Julio Teheran for the series opener, opposed by RHP Ryne Stanek. The under has hit in three straight starts for Teheran since his last 'over' back on Aug. 5 at CitiField against the Mets. The under has also hit in five consecutive starts for Teheran at home dating back to June 23.

The Braves might find it difficult to cool off the Rays, who enter with eight consecutive victories. Atlanta won two of three against the Milwaukee Brewers to kick off their last homestand from Aug. 10-12, and they had a four-game sweep of the Miami Marlins Aug. 13-15 after that. However, they were left with a poor taste in their mouth after the Colorado Rockies broomed them in a four-game set to close out the homestand. The 'over' is 3-1 in Stanek's past four starts overall, and 3-1 in his past four on the road, too. The Rays are also a dismal 1-7 across Stanek's past eight assignments on the road, so Teheran and the Braves might be the play Tuesday evening in the interleague series opener.

In interleague play, the Rays have posted a 6-9 record in their previous 15 games against the NL this season, including 0-2 against the Braves back in a mini-set on May 8-9 at Tropicana Field. Atlanta hasn't been much better against the AL, going just 7-8 in 15 previous interleague battles this season.

                  Looking Ahead

                  Monday, Aug. 27

The Athletics head to Minute Maid Park to battle the Astros in a key American League West battle. The Astros are clinging to a 1 1/2-game lead in the AL West against the surprising A's. LHP Brett Anderson will take the ball for the A's, while the Astros counter with RHP Gerrit Cole. Oakland has won 17 of their past 22 games inside the division, while going 20-8 over the past 28 games on the road. In addition, Oakland is 22-9 in the past 31 road games vs. RHP, while going 40-19 in the past 59 overall against righties. The A's haven't fared well with Anderson on the bump lately, posting a 4-9 record across the lefty's past 13 against teams with a winning record.

The Astros have been stumbling at home lately, going 1-9 in their past 10 games at Minute Maid. They're just 1-4 in the past five against left-handed starters, while going 1-4 in their past five to kick off a new series, too. However, they are 4-0 in the past four vs. LHP, while going 5-0 in their past five games against AL West foes. Cole might be the guy to snap them out of their funk. While they are 0-4 in his past four against AL West clubs, and 1-4 in his past five overall, they have won seven of his past nine outings at home. Minute Maid has been a house of horrors for the A's lately, going 17-35 in the past 52 against the Astros overall, and 9-19 in the past 28 trips to the Gulf Coast.

The probable starters for Monday's series opener in San Francisco features Diamondbacks LHP Patrick Corbin facing Giants RHP Chris Stratton. Arizona has won four of their past five road games, while winning seven of the past 10 overall. They're 6-0 in Corbin's past six starts, and 7-1 in his past eight assignments on the road. In addition, they're an impressive 13-3 in the past 16 when Corbin is working on five days of rest. The Giants have struggled lately at home, winning just three of their past 12 against teams with a winning overall record. They're also 1-4 in their past five at home against a southpaw while posting a 1-6 mark in their past seven at AT&T Park against a team with a winning road record.

                  Weather Report

Precipitation will not be a problem during the short slate of games on Monday. However, winds will be a huge issue for the Mets and Cubs, as the wind will be blowing out to left-center field at a 16-19 mph clip. It's a battle of RHP Noah Syndergaard and LHP Jon Lester. The nder is 3-1-2 in Thor's past six road outings, while going 16-4-2 in his past 22 against winning teams. The under is 8-2 in Chicago's past 10, while going 19-7 in their past 26 vs. RHP. The over is 9-2 in Lester's past 11, and the wind could help add to that number.

                  Tuesday, Aug. 28

White Sox RHP James Shields will hit the road where he has been an absolute train wreck this season. The veteran is just 1-8 with a 6.12 ERA across 11 starts and one relief appearance over 67 2/3 innings while his opponent batting average is .271 with 16 homers allowed. Surprisingly, Shields is 2-0 with a 2.92 ERA in two starts against the Yankees since the start of the 2015 season.

Indians RHP Carlos Carrasco will take the ball from manager Terry Francona against the Twins. While he has posted an impressive 8-3 record in 11 starts and one relief appearance at home this season, he has a subpar 4.35 ERA over 62 innings while the opposition is hitting .273 against him. Cookie has struggled against the Twins, too, going 1-3 with a 4.56 ERA in five starts with a .275 opponent batting average across 25 2/3 innings.

Astros RHP Charlie Morton continues to roll right along with an 8-2 record, 3.00 ERA and .213 opponent batting average across 13 starts over 78 innings. He has struck out 100 batters in his 13 home outings, too. He hasn't been able to slay the A's, however, lasting just 9 1/3 innings in two starts with no decisions and a .263 opponent batting average.

Giants LHP Madison Bumgarner will host Diamondbacks RHP Clay Buchholz at AT&T Park. MadBum has been looking a lot like himself lately, going 3-2 with a 1.71 ERA in seven home outings with a .198 opponent batting average. He has served up just two of his nine homers at home, too, while striking out 42 batters across 47 1/3 innings. He's 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA in two outings against the Snakes this season, although they're hitting .333 against him in 11 innings with 15 hits and three walks.

                  Weather Report

The winds will be gusting out to right field from 11-14 mph at Progressive Field for the game between the Twins and Indians. The same holds true for the interleague battle between the Marlins and Red Sox, gusting 11-14 mph to right-center field. The Pirates and Cardinals will face a 10-13 mph wind blowing right to left, but no precip at least.

At Wrigley Field, the wind will be blowing out again from 11-14 mph, but the Mets and Cubs might be dodging the raindrops. Thunderstorms are forecast 40 percent or greater from first pitch through the overnight. The same holds true for the Tigers-Royals battle, with winds 13-16 mph blowing to center field. That is if the game is played, as there is a 50 percent or greater chance of thunderstorms for most of the day.

In Arlington, the Dodgers and Rangers will be blowing in from right-center field at 12-15 mph. It will be a hot wind, too, with temperatures forecast to be in the mid-90's. In the final game of the game, the D-Backs and Giants will face a 12-15 mph jetstream blowing out to straighaway center field.

MLB Preview - Colorado Rockies at Los Angeles Angels

The National League playoff race is a muddled mess, and the Colorado Rockies are in the middle of it all. A good finish could nab them the National League West title or a wild card berth, while a poor end to the season could leave them home for the postseason. Every game is crucial down the stretch and the Rockies will aim to go on the road and pick up a victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

The Angels have a better run-differential than the Rockies but have not had the same close-game luck, and they are out of the playoff race. Los Angeles’ role has been reduced to spoiler but it certainly has the capacity to win this game despite an inferior overall record.

This game means much more to the Rockies than it does the Angels but it could be a competitive affair in MLB wagering.

The Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Angels will face off on Monday, August 27th, 2018 at 10 p.m. ET at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN.

                      Odds Analysis

The Rockies are 71-58 on the season and sit in a tie for first place with the Diamondbacks in the N.L. West. They are in a close race in the division and are joined by a mess of teams pushing for the two N.L. wild card spots. Colorado has a negative run-differential on the season, which is why its playoff odds are lower than some teams below it in the standings.

The Angels are 63-67 on the year. They have gone 33-32 at home in 2018 and will aim to improve on that to give their fans something to cheer about.

                      Probable Pitchers

The Rockies are expected to send right-hander Jon Gray to the mound. He is 10-7 on the season with a 4.67 ERA. Gray had an ERA in the high-5s through late June, which got him a trip down to the minors. But the peripheral numbers always looked good and he has been impressive since a return to the majors. Gray gave up only two runs in 6.1 innings pitched last time out in a win over the Padres. He has 162 strikeouts in 140.2 innings pitched and has the benefit of playing this game on the road instead of at hitter-friendly Coors Field.

The Angels have decided to go with Odrisamer Despaigne on Monday. He last pitched on Wednesday and suffered the loss against Arizona, as he gave up three runs in four innings. He has had some success against the Rockies, going 3-0 against them with a 2.01 ERA.

                      Injury Update

The Angels will be without outfielder Justin Upton in this one, as he was recently placed on the disabled list with a cut on his finger. Upton is batting .267 with 26 homers and 74 RBIs on the year, so it is a significant loss.

However, the Angeles recently welcomed Mike Trout back to the lineup. He is the best player in baseball and could have a profound impact on this matchup. Trout is batting .314 with 30 homers, 60 RBIs and an OPS of 1.090. He didn’t show any rust in his first game off the disabled list, as Trout went 2-for-3 with a triple.

                      Free MLB ATS Picks

The Angels are a solid team despite their ups and downs this season, but Gray has figured it out of late. He has good stuff and should be able to keep Los Angeles’ bats in check.

The Rockies need to keep piling up wins and they will get a key road one here in MLB gambling.

MLB ATS Pick: Rockies 5, Angels 4

                        • Morales' home run streak ends at 7 as O's beat Blue Jays 7-0
                          August 28, 2018

BALTIMORE (AP) Kendrys Morales had his home run streak snapped at seven games by the Baltimore Orioles, who ended an eight-game skid by defeating the Toronto Blue Jays 7-0 on Monday night.

Striving to tie the major league record of homering in eight straight games, Morales went 0 for 3 with a walk and did not hit the ball out of the infield. In his final chance, the Toronto slugger swung through a slider from Paul Fry to strike out in the eighth inning.

Though he failed to match the mark shared by Dale Long, Don Mattingly and Ken Griffey Jr., Morales owns the big league record for successive games with a home run by a switch-hitter. He also owns the franchise record for consecutive games with a long ball.

Facing Baltimore rookie David Hess, against whom he homered last week, Morales struck out in the first inning, grounded out in the fourth and drew a four-pitch walk in the sixth.

Hess (3-8) tossed six innings of four-hit ball to earn his first win since May 25. He was 0-7 in his previous 12 starts, though he did pitch very well against Toronto his last time out.

The game was scoreless until the Orioles broke through in the sixth against Sam Gaviglio (3-7).

Trey Mancini homered and matched a career high with five RBIs as Baltimore improved to 2-12 against Toronto with its first win since Aug. 18.

                          ASTROS 11, ATHLETICS 4

HOUSTON (AP) - Alex Bregman and Tyler White homered and drove in four runs apiece as Houston rallied to beat Oakland in the opener of their AL West showdown.

It was the sixth straight win for the first-place Astros, who moved to 2 1/2 games ahead of the Athletics.

George Springer and Jose Altuve each drove in a run during a five-run third inning that erased an early 4-0 deficit. This was the first game with Springer, Altuve and Carlos Correa in the lineup together since June 25. Springer, who pinch-hit Sunday, missed the previous five games with a quadriceps injury.

Bregman tied a career high with four hits.

The A's jumped on starter Gerrit Cole (12-5) for four runs behind a two-run homer by Marcus Semien in the second and a two-run run shot by Matt Chapman in the third.

Cole allowed four hits and struck out eight to move ahead of teammate Justin Verlander (229) and into first place in the AL with 234 strikeouts.

Brett Anderson (3-4) allowed five runs and seven hits in 2 2/3 innings.

                          CUBS 7, METS 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Jon Lester pitched six innings, drove in two runs with a timely single off Noah Syndergaard and made two nice plays in the field to help Chicago beat New York Mets for its sixth consecutive victory.

Anthony Rizzo homered and Daniel Murphy reached three more times from the leadoff spot as the NL-leading Cubs moved a season-high 24 games over .500 by improving to 5-0 against the Mets this year. Murphy, who began his career with the Mets, is batting .407 (11 for 27) in six games since he was acquired in a trade with Washington.

Lester was in line for his 15th win before Kevin Plawecki hit a solo homer off Steve Cishek (4-1) in the seventh, tying it at 4 on a warm and windy night at Wrigley Field. But the Cubs went ahead to stay with two runs in the bottom half, including Ben Zobrist's tiebreaking double off Jerry Blevins (1-2).

New York loaded the bases in the ninth before Jesse Chavez struck out Amed Rosario and Austin Jackson for his third save of the season, helping the Cubs (77-53) increase their NL Central lead to 4 1/2 games over idle St. Louis.

Michael Conforto hit a tape-measure homer for New York. Syndergaard allowed four runs and nine hits in six innings.

                          NATIONALS 5, PHILLIES 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Stephen Strasburg threw six effective innings, Matt Wieters hit a solo homer and Washington defeated Philadelphia.

Strasburg (7-7) gave up two runs and five hits, striking out five. He rebounded from a rough start against Philadelphia last week in his return from the disabled list.

The Phillies fell 3 1/2 games behind first-place Atlanta in the NL East after losing the opener for the seventh straight series. They're 6-12 since Aug. 8 and have dropped five games in the standings during that span.

Zach Eflin (9-5) allowed five runs - three earned - and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. His throwing error in the fourth cost him.

Rhys Hoskins hit his 27th homer for Philadelphia.

Justin Miller tossed a perfect ninth for his first save.

                          WHITE SOX 6, YANKEES 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Carlos Rodon pitched two-hit ball over seven innings, Yoan Moncada doubled in two runs and the surging Chicago White Sox beat New York for their fourth straight win.

Rodon (6-3) allowed a two-run homer to Gleyber Torres but was strong otherwise, and Chicago's bullpen closed out a three-hitter. The White Sox have won 10 of 13 and clinched their first winning month this season by improving to 15-10 in August.

Rodon is 5-0 with a 1.84 ERA in his past nine starts. The 25-year-old left-hander hasn't lost since June 30.

New York (83-48) missed an opportunity to gain ground on the idle Red Sox, falling 6 1/2 games back of the AL East leaders. The Yankees were coming off four-game sweep in Baltimore and had won eight of nine, shaving 4+ games off Boston's lead in a span of eight days.

Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka (9-5) permitted four runs in seven innings. He gave up 10 hits, equaling a career high.

                          GIANTS 2, DIAMONDBACKS 0

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Chris Stratton threw a career-high eight innings to outpitch Patrick Corbin, and Steven Duggar hit an early two-run homer as San Francisco blanked Arizona.

The Diamondbacks began the night with a one-game lead in the NL West over Colorado.

Stratton (9-7) permitted five hits, struck out six and allowed only two runners past first base. He walked none and retired 17 of his final 18 batters to win for the first time since June 17.

Tony Watson set down two hitters and Hunter Strickland got one out for his 14th save, completing the five-hitter.

Corbin (10-5) had nine strikeouts and one walk in seven innings while absorbing his first loss in six starts against the Giants this season. He gave up four hits.

From Warren Buffett; the smartest people he knows:

                              1) Don’t get easily offended

                              2) Read more than they talk

                              3) Enjoy intelligent discourse

                              4) Quickly admit when they’re wrong

                              5) Comfortable changing their opinion

                              6) Surround themselves w/ intelligence

                              7) Seek to understand every perspective on a topic

                              Quote of the Day
“Any time you lose a coach, it’s tough. But for me, that’s why you hire great assistant coaches, guys you know can become coordinators or position coaches. … First-time coordinator, coordinating the coaches, divvying up scripts, who’s doing this, who’s doing that, the job responsibilities, all that’s new. But listen, that’s why I here. I’m still the one calling the plays, I’m still a big part of the game planning, and we’re still doing it as a collaborative effort……”
                              Doug Pederson

                              Tuesday’s quiz

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

                              13) Darius Bazely was a top-10 basketball prospect in the 2018 high school class, but he decided to skip college and play in the G-League; now he has decided not to play in the G-League either and will use the year to train and prepare himself to be a pro. How?

I’m not sure who is advising this young man; disappearing for a year and not competing at all isn’t going to help him. Apparently “his group” as he calls it, isn’t happy because Bazely would be subject to the G-League draft and couldn’t choose where he wanted to play this season.

                              12) Why don’t the Philadelphia 76ers have a GM yet?

                              11) Manu Ginobili retired; he played 16 years in the NBA, all for the Spurs, scoring 14,043 points and winning four NBA titles. One of the NBA’s best-ever international players.

                              10) New Jersey Giants signed Odell Beckham to a 5-year, $90M contract; $41M of it is guaranteed, $65M of it guaranteed for injury.

                              9) South Carolina Gamecocks are fully replacing their football field less than a week before the season opener after hosting a Jay-Z/Beyonce concert last week.

Crews trucked in sod from Sugar Hill, GA after the old field had to be removed following the concert last week.

Carolina is home the next three Saturdays, against Coastal Carolina, then Georgia, Marshall.

                              8) Not only is true freshman JT Daniels the starting QB at USC, he is a kid who graduated high school a year early, so he is REALLY young. Daniels, the 2017 Gatorade National High School Player of the Year, went Mater Dei High School in LA.

But, in this age of “If I ain’t startin’, then I’ll be departin’”, they worked their butts off to recruit Daniels, and they want to keep him a Trojan. Plus, the three candidates Daniels beat out for the starting job are also all freshmen or sophomores- how many of them will transfer?

                              7) Rice 31, Prairie View 28— Huge sigh of relief from Houston after the Owls rallied from a 28-19 4th-quarter deficit to escape the horror of losing to a I-AA team.

                              6) Everyone seems to like Players’ Weekend in baseball; didn’t hear one bad word about it, other than sometimes the nicknames on the jerseys don’t always help identify who I’m watching.

I wouldn’t mind if MLB let the players wear whatever shoes they want, whenever.

Washington’s Adam Eaton had four hits Sunday using a red bat that was very colorful, he was told he couldn’t use it Monday, because Players’ Weekend was over. Oy.

                              5) Serious question: Do rookie head coaches in the NFL try harder in preseason games than experienced coaches? They have to get into the routine of what happens during a game, so maybe they gameplan more than guys who are just trying to pare their roster down and get ready for Opening Day.

I’m going to have to research that one for next summer.

                              4) Miami Marlins are averaging 10,054 fans per game, less than half what they said they averaged last year; rumor has it last year’s numbers were exaggerated to help sell the team.

Toronto’s attendance is down 10,442 fans per game; Detroit, Kansas City are both down over 6,000 fans a game. When your team has zero chance to make the playoffs, people don’t go to the games.

                              3) Atlanta Braves just finished stretch of 22 games in 20 days with a 13-9 record; teams are not allowed to play more than 20 days in a row- thats in the collective bargaining agreement.

                              2) The hurricane relief fund JJ Watt started in Houston last year wound up raising $41.6M; all of that money has been given out. Good for him.

                              1) I’m guessing this is a good time financially for people who sell metal detectors; with all the public shootings, metal detectors are going to be everywhere pretty soon.

                              • LEADING OFF: Scherzer vs Nola, take 2; Red Sox reeling
                                August 27, 2018
                                By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                                WE MEET AGAIN

NL Cy Young Award candidates Max Scherzer and Aaron Nola share the mound for the second time in five days, this time at Nola's home park in Philadelphia. Nola (15-3, 2.13) got the better of Scherzer (16-6, 2.13) and the Nationals last Thursday in Washington, pitching eight innings with nine strikeouts in a 2-0 victory. Scherzer held the Phillies to two runs over seven innings, taking his first loss since July 2.

                                REELING RED SOX

Boston tries to end a three-game skid against Miami right-hander Jose Urena, who is returning from a suspension for hitting breakout Braves rookie Ronald Acuna Jr. with a pitch. The Red Sox were swept by the Rays over the weekend - Boston's first sweep of the season - and have lost six of eight to drop to 90-42. They'll turn to lefty Brian Johnson (4-3, 4.12) to end that skid.

Urena (4-12, 4.50) was suspended six games by Major League Baseball after plunking Acuna on Aug. 15, though he pitched a complete game in a 12-1 win over Washington on Aug. 19 while he planned to appeal the ban. He dropped the appeal later that week.

                                WRIGLEY SHOWDOWN

Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom and Cubs left-hander Cole Hamels take the mound at Wrigley Field for a matchup of two of baseball's hottest pitchers. DeGrom, one of the leading contenders for the NL Cy Young Award, has a 1.26 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings over five August starts. Hamels is 4-0 with a sparkling 0.79 ERA in five starts since he was acquired in a July 27 trade with Texas. Weather could be a factor, with thunderstorms in the forecast for the Chicago area.

                                VETS OUT WEST

The Athletics and Astros continue a pivotal series in Houston with 34-year-old hurlers Edwin Jackson and Charlie Morton on the mound. Oakland is Jackson's 13th team, and he's made a big impression since signing a minor league deal on June 6. Over 11 starts, he's 4-3 with a 2.97 ERA, though he's given up four homers over 9 1/3 innings over his past two starts. Morton (13-3, 3.05) enjoyed a resurgence in 2017 that has continued this season, though he's also struggled lately, allowing six runs over five innings in a 10-7 win against Seattle last time out.

                                ROLLING RAYS

Tampa Bay takes an eight-game winning streak into an interleague series at Atlanta. Relief pitcher Ryne Stanek will be the Rays' opener in the first game of the series, opposing Braves right-hander Julio Teheran. Tampa Bay is coming off a three-game sweep of the Red Sox, the first time Boston has been swept this season, and is a season-best nine games over .500 at 70-61. Despite this roll, the Rays are still nine games behind Oakland for the second AL wild card and 19 1/2 games behind the first-place Red Sox.
